Exercise! - 30 Day Shred for 30 Days Straight CHALLENGE!

Good morning all! I am doing a 30 DS Challenge for 30 Days Straight and would like some brave souls to join me! Has anyone actually ever gotten through the FULL 30 days?? Well I'm stubborn enough to try and motivated like crazy!!

If you're going to join me in this challenge please make sure you do follow through on ALL 30 days. I need as much butt-kicking as anyone else so I will be here to support you and motivate you in any way I can.

Background: About 3 months ago I started low-carbing and exercising every day, I was doing really well and lost 20 pounds until I fell off the wagon GRADUALLY one week...which of course turned into "I'll get back on track tomorrow" everyday since. I blamed it on PMS and food cravings but I really had the choice of what I put in my mouth and how much moving around I did no matter what kind of cravings I felt. As of 3 weeks ago I had gained back 4 pounds and as soon as I saw that number, I put my scale away for good. It's easier for me to live in denial most of the time. I am going to go weigh myself for this challenge and I will be posting weekly updates as far as that wretched digital number on the piece of glass is concerned.

I have set up today as my "Get Organized Day".
So here's what I'm doing to make sure I'm successful on this challenge:

1. Make a list of your fitness goals and the benefits from doing this challenge.
Here are my goals mine:
-Kickstart my weight loss again
-To feel good about it being summer time again instead of feeling like I can't wait for fall or winter to go back into hiding under my long sleeves and big sweaters
-To feel HEALTHY and not miserable about my body and to get myself out of this slight depression. When I was lost my 20 pounds before, I started seeing a different person in the mirror. I started to feel more "okay" with having my picture taken (only from a distinct angle!) and I started to feel more confident about my body. I WANT THOSE THINGS BACK!
-At the end of the 30 days, I will be healthier and more motivated by my results to continue my healthy lifestyle.
-I will accept that not everything in life is perfect, including me, so I may fall off the wagon from time to time - but I will NOT use that as an excuse to stay off the wagon. I will get back on that darn wagon immediately before it leaves me in the dust!

2. At the start of the week have all your favorite workout clothes clean and easily accessible so you don't have reason to not workout. (Big excuse for me).

3. Have everything else organized for your week so you're not distracted with cleaning, paperwork, tv, etc.

4. Set yourself up for success by managing your time properly. I work full time, go to school full time and will now be doing the 30 DS full time! It's easy for me to want to make excuses but by planning out each day and allotting time for MYSELF - i.e. workouts - then I will only be helping myself in the end. I banished myself from facebook for the next 30 days. It's a huge time waster for me. There are 1440 minutes in a day. The 30 DS only takes 20 minutes!

5. You have to want it. It's all about choices in life. I made choices to eat unhealthy food for most of my life and now I am living the consequences of those choices. I want it so bad but I am going to put that desire into action. As Nike says: JUST DO IT!

I hope you're still with me! If I lost you at 30 days then please even consider doing it every other day because it can only benefit you.

Here's the challenge rules:
1. In your first post please state:

Your starting weight (or how many pounds you have to lose till you reach your goal) and age or any other stats if you'd like.
What are your goals from doing this challenge?
Are you on a specific food plan?

2. Please check in at least once a week with your progress. Just be honest if you didn't workout one day.

My stats:
1. Current weight: 256.6 Goal weight: 135 :dizzy: Age: 30
2. See above :) - I'm also going to supplement in Jillian's other video Banish Fat Boost Metabolism at least once a week on top of 30 DS.
3. I'm doing low carb

Today is June 20, 2010 - The challenge begins OFFICIALLY tomorrow, June 21 and will end on July 21, 2010.
LET'S DO THIS!!! :carrot::carrot::carrot:

Goal weight: 125

Goals
Use this 30 days to start and stick to healthier lifestyle. I've started over again far too many times.

I'm starting South Beach tomorrow.

Hi All,

I would love to join this challenge. I have been walking for about 11 weeks now and although I have lost 10 lbs.. it was VERY hard. I discovered the medication that I was taking (for fibroids) was hampering my efforts. I have decided to stop that medication and I am steadily loosing weight again. It is a lot harder now that I am a little older. I hate the yo yoing of dieting, so I am not following any specific diet. I have been there done that. I have all the tools to know what healthy eating is all about. I am very careful to eat within my "points" (a throwback from WW) and eating more heart healthy foods, like veggies and fruits, leguims (sp). Trying to stay away from white breads, flours and basically anything that is processesed. We have a huge garden and this is wonderful for healthful eating.

I walk 3 miles every morning at 5:30 with my girlfriend and 6 1/2 miles on sat. morning. Sundays is a day of rest! LOL. We are blessed to have a lovely walking trail that we get to enjoy all of nature and see lot's of wonderful sites each day. Saw a deer yesterday! We even see a heron each morning as well. I think that is why walking is so pleasurable for me. I do about 3 miles in 40-45 mins. So it is also a great workout.

Here are my stats:
•Starting weight 190 present weight 180 goal weight 150...my age is 48
•My Goal in these 30 days are to loose 8 lbs. I figure 2 lbs a week loss is attainable, now that my meds are out of my system. (I pray)
•My food plan is to eat sensible foods and stay away from all junk food. (I may have an italian ice/gallati every so often though)
•I also pledge to drink lots of water each day.

Happy to be a part of this challenge. As my other challenge is ending soon. (Family Circle Walking Challenge)

How To Lie To The Bathroom Scale
---------------------------------
1. Weigh yourself with clothes on, after dinner... as well as in the
morning, without clothes, before breakfast, because it's nice to
see how much weight you've lost overnight.

2. Never weigh yourself with wet hair.

3. When weighing, remove everything, including glasses. In this case,
blurred vision is an asset. Don't forget the earrings, these things
can weigh at least a pound.

4. Use cheap scales only, never the medical kind, because they are
always five pounds off...to your advantage.

5. Always go to the bathroom first.

6. Stand with arms raised, making pressure on the scale lighter.

7. Don't eat or drink in the morning until AFTER you've weighed in,
completely naked, of course.

8. Weigh yourself after a haircut, this is good for at least half a
pound of hair (hopefully).

9. Exhale with all your might BEFORE stepping onto the scale (air has
to weigh something, right?).

10. Start out with just one foot on the scale, then holding onto the
towel rack in front of you, slowly edge your other foot on and
slowly let off of the rack. Admittedly, this takes time, but it's
worth it. You will weigh at least two pounds less than if you'd
stepped on normally.

Plan:
Eat Healthier (trying calorie counting and cycling)

30-Day Goal Weight: Less than 190
30-Day Non-Scale Goal: To be healthier, happier, and fitter, which will keep me motivated and positive on my life reform journey.

Hi ladies! I'm in. I managed to backslide pretty badly in the last few weeks, to my chagrin. To re-motivate last night I went to Target and bought the 30DS video. And lo and behold, today I see this post! Let's do this thing! I start tonight.

My stats:
Current weight: back up to 148 (argh.....)
Goal: around 135-137, this was a happy healthy range for me before.
Age: 35
Diet plan: long-term vegetarian, mostly vegan (no dairy). I had entirely quit sugar for a while, but then the backsliding began....so back to no sugar!

I hope so as day 1 was crazy bad. Hope everyone else get through it ok.

I'm so disappointed in myself for getting so out of shape that there really is no way that I can stop now I've started. This is no way to live, I deserve better!!

So I'm not tempted to stray from my plan I've spent the evening cooking. I now have a fridge full of SB friendly breakfasts and veggies chopped up for salads for the rest of the week. Hopefully I will end up being slimmer and more organised person by the end of this :D

Is anyone going to measure themselves to see how many inches they lose?

Hi everyone, i just found this thread, i started the shred on 21st so thaught i should join in. i originally tried it over a week ago and had to sit down for an hour to stop myself being sick when i had finished, then i couldnt walk properly for the next 5 days because my quads were in agony and i had jelly legs, not good!

so i started properly on monday, aiming to do the shred for the 30 consecutive days, this time i made sure i was properly hydrated, put the airconditioning on so i didnt overheat and made sure i had eaten an hour before ( ryvita, celery and houmous) so that i had some energy. i found monday difficult but i enjoyed it, i didnt feel sick at all this time, so im blaming overheating and lack of energy for feeling so bad the first time, i actually felt so good at the end of it that i went in the pool to cool down and did 50 lengths (10 metre pool) while i was in there, i think this helped my muscles recover aswell.

so yesterday was day 2 and i did the exact same thing, but i found it a lot more difficult, it felt great swimming afterwards though.

Today is day 3, wish my luck! i am determined to stick with this

stats: starting weight from monday 185 pounds goal 140 pounds height 5´5 age 24. i have also taken my measurements so i can compare at the end of the 30 days.

i follow an anti-candida diet, for my health not weight loss, although it does help with weight loss.

Hello Ladies ;)
I hope it's not too late to join. I just bought the DVD today after much debating because I know its going to kick my butt LOL. I was just commenting today that I really need a challenge to get motivated again, then I found this thread :D.
I am wondering how much weight you all plan to use for the video. I have three pound barbells and 10 pound barbells. I don't think the 10 would be quite right LOL. I am also not sure when we are supposed to level up to the second and third levels? Any insight on that? Glad to be part of the challenge!

* I am a 29 year old mom of two. I am currently on a plateau (yuck) at 167 and my goal weight is somewhere around 145, I'll know when I get there :)

* my goal is to beat this plateau and lose inches off my waist so I will look better in my bathing suit when we go on vacation (RV trip) on July 19. This means I wil be done the challenge on the 18th because I won't have access to my videos anymore, I hope this is alright

* My food plan is calorie counting and my range is between 1300- 1500 cals per day

edited to add: I just did the video for the first time tonight. It didn't look so hard when I previewed it. Boy was I wrong LOL. I mean, I have done lunges and stuff before, but now, an hour later, I am having a hard time walking and my legs are like two cooked noodles. I have a 4 mile biking trip planned tomorrow too ;) Feel the burn LOL

Hello again ladies,
How is everyone doing on the challenge? Unfortunately, I came back to say that I need to opt out of the challenge :( I have done two sessions so far and I severely hurt my back ( I have many back issues) with the jarring movements of the jumping jacks and some of the ab movements, darn. My back surgeon advised I should take it easy and not preform any more higher impact exercises at leats for the time being. Back to low impact "walk away the pounds" DVDs for me :)

Good luck girls! Please remember to take a rest day if you are very sore. Muscle needs a chance to repair itself. Your health is important! Take a look at this article for some tips when your muscles are very sore. Have fun ;)

Keep it up ladies. If you're not seeing weight drop like you'd like, you HAVE TO add additional cardio to your routine. I'm on Day 28, Level 3 and I walk daily (at the very least) and watch my calories...still dropping my usual 2lbs a week. Only difference is that I'm stronger and feel muscles I've never felt starting to take shape under the fat.

1-week check-in:

Not a great week. I had to put one of my dogs to sleep. He had a slipped disc and was too old for major spinal surgery. Then, I had a crown put on one of my teeth and it's been hurting nonstop since. They just adjusted it this afternoon and hopefully that will be the end of the pain. I haven't weighed myself or watched calories this week, but between the oral pain and the sadness I don't think I've eaten much.

I HAVE exercised, though. The 30DS so far is not something I can do everyday yet, so I do it plus another 20-30 min exercise every other day, alternating with running or elliptical on the off days. And even in this very brief time, I can definitely feel some great changes in my abs. I can't wait for the fat on top of them to be gone so that I might see improvement!

I'll muster up the courage to weigh myself soon. I think I'm afraid of anything that might add to my depression - maybe I'll wait til there's a better chance of good news! :)

Caela
06-28-2010, 09:14 PM
Just checking in. Sorry to hear some people are having a bad time of it. :(
I really don't understand why there isn't 48 hours rest built in between weight training to allow your body to recover.

What's everyone's favorite or least favorite circuit? I find the push ups to jacks to rope in circuit 1 the most challenging. Probably because JM's jabbering makes the 2 min. of cardio seem like forever and I hate push-ups!

Update: During the first 8 days of 30DS, I worked out for an additional 80 min./day, most days at a very high intensity level & caloric burn. My calorie intake was 1200-1500/day.

30-DS Start Weight: 211
Current Weight: A little under 208
Stalled out on weight since last Thursday (Day 4).

Hi all,

I was just reading this thread b/c I love 30DS! Kudos to you all for taking on this challenge! I would join you but I'm training for a 1/2 marathon and I need to focus on the running.

Caela, the reason you don't need 48 hrs rest is because you are (I assume) using small weights (3, 5, 8 lbs, etc). Things like pushups you can do every day. Rest days are needed when you are doing high weights, lower reps, to exhaustion. (of course, 30DS often takes me to exhaustion. But it has to do with the low weight). Of course, you should always listen to your body b/c any kind of workout done too much can lead to injury, exhaution, etc.

Good luck, ladies! Kick butt (and I don't just mean the butt-kicks in level 1!)

Hi all!!

So I took a break for awhile after having no sucess with regular exercise before. So I figured out with my detail oriented and anal personality, I needed a plan instead of winging it. So... I never heard of the 30 day Shred b4 reading this post. So I did a little research and found great reviews on it.

So yesterday, I picked it up at walmart. And started it tonight. Let me tell you, I only made it thru the Level one, 2nd circuit lol. And that was even pushing it. But I know it;s all because I need to build up that stamina again and it will come back each and every time I press play on the DVD player. So I'm totally commited to seeing this thru for 30 days!! So here's my stats and I wish everyone and myself the best of luck with this 30 day shred!!!

age: 33
5' and 170 lbs uggggg
goal with this program: anything below 170 lollll.

i did 800m swim afterwards instead of my usual 500 as i felt so bad for not being able to do the dvd to the letter. it makes level 1 feel easy. i was so happy to see how much natalie was sweating, she is human after all.

Beachplum
07-01-2010, 02:39 PM
atta girl! I bet walking with crutches is a workout in itself. How did you sprain your ankle? I sprained my ankle in HS, years ago, to this day, it is much weaker than the other ankle. If I am not careful, I could sprain it again, just by slightly turning it. I was in a cast for a month from that sprain and it wasn't fun. I hope you feel better soon.

Caela

Ry - Sorry about your ankle and the crutches. :( Lemons, Lemonade --> Hope your arms get really toned up from it at least.

Just finished lvl 2 for first time (day 11). Wasn't a fan of lvl 1 but I  lvl 2. Great core & back workout and plyo was fun!

Good luck everyone on all lvls! Just a suggestion - You guys might want to do an additional warm-up and cool down. I don't understand why JM skimps with a high-impact workout.

Actually I'm noticing the time I was working out my arms is coming in handy now lol.

We heard a loud sound last night so I went to go investigate and just stepped down wrong and my ankle just twisted sideways. I'm really lucky it didn't break. I refuse to let this derail my weight loss efforts though...I'll sit in a chair and punch if I have to...

sznn

Caela, I couldn't agree more. I liked the level 1 workout and I really like level 2, but I DESPISE JM's warmup and cooldown "stretches". After day 1, I started doing my own warmup run (1-2 miles) then brief stretches before the 30DS workout, and after the workout I do my own longer cooldown with stretches that work for me. I wholeheartedly believe in injury prevention this way.

So glad that I found this thread!!!!!!! I just finished L1D9 of the 30DS!

I am going to do a mini check point tomorrow and then I will post my results.

Anyways here are my starting stats:

1) 22 y/o, 185 lbs
2) I was extremely athletic (and had a very toned body) throughout my youth until I reached college. The freshmen fifteen + the stress of my dad being diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer (he is now 4 years cancer free) turned into nearly a 50lb weight gain. I have just finished college and have gotten my dream job which I will start in a couple of months. I have also just gotten engaged to my high school/college sweetheart, and it is time for a change. This is the time of my life and I'm tired of always being so ashamed of the way I like. My goal through this experience is to get me back into the exercise routine and help me start the long road to me being back at a healthy weight.
3) My food plan is simple. I have cut out pop, fast food, and sweets. Honestly, after Day 3 of the DS I had no desire for this food anymore. My body hurt so bad that it was not worth eating a burger out.

L1D4 today + 32 minute run...ran a bit too fast uphill and got a lovely stomache cramp.
Need to get the the food under control now....

just checking in, weighed myself yesterday and after 2 weeks of the shred i have only lost 1 pound, but my clothes are feeling looser and im looking more toned and less wobbly so i think that when i take my measurements again at the end of the 30 days there will be quite a big difference, the muscle gain is obviously counterbalancing the fat loss on the scales.

level 2 is really hurting my knees though and i dont understand why JM doesnt do the knee circles in the warmup for L2, i am adding them and the hip circles to my warmup anyway, i much prefer the cardio in L2

keep up the good work everybody

Yesterday was my last day of level one and my first check point. I was pretty happy with the scale (down 7 pounds) and my waist was down 1 inch. I credit a lot of it to really sticking to healthier eating habits and eliminating soda. I always had a can or bottle of coke at work and now I have my water (with the occasional lime or lemon slice). I am starting Level 2 today so we will see how it goes!

Weekly check in. Hi all! Today is day 15 overall & day 5 for lvl 2. I had some shoulder soreness the first couple days of lvl 2 from the planks and wt but body quickly adapted.

Up about a half lb. @ 208.2. I wouldn't attribute either my weight loss from the first wk or gain from last wk to the shred. For me, my other workouts and whether or not I'm sedentary the rest of the time make a far bigger difference. But, I do attribute my increased endurance and recovery during jogging to doing this type of workout every day.

This wk, I'm focusing on HIIT cardio (themed "HIIT It & Quit It" week :lol3:) and my tom symptoms should go away so I expect a lot of fun and a scale drop.

Keep on truckin' everyone!:cheer2:

I've lost count of the days! I skipped yesterday because of the oppressive heat but I did get my 6 mile walk in, as my girlfriend, that I walk with didn't have work. :) So I got 6 miles x 3 within 6 days. Just finished the "dred" and am now cooling off in my bedroom with the air running on full blast. Today is suppose to be another scorcher with humidity thrown in. yuck! Hope everyone enjoyed the 4th of July celebrations.

L1 in the a.m. then L2D3 in the p.m.

I absolutely hate L2... (hence the reason I have incorporated L1 in the morning). I am looking forward to moving onto L3!

I just have to type something out....
I am feeling REALLY guilty about skipping today's workout which would be L1 D4....my excuse is that I was exhausted because I went to aquatic therapy...I have a broken leg and am obviously doing a modified version of this DVD. So should I just pretend tomorrow is my Day 4 or should I skip because I did stay an extra 30 mins in the pool and did aerobics. TIA!

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and would love to join this thread. I completed L1 D4 today. I did the 30DS back in 2008 (but only for 11 days straight) and lost about 4.5 inches in those 11 days. Now I am back and committed to completing the workout for 30 days straight.

FYI -- Jillian actually has a NEW Shred DVD coming out September 7. It's called Jillian Michaels Shred It with Weights. Here's a quick synopsis for it:

Shred-It With Weights adds extra weight to circuit training techniques that promises results in 30 days. Using a kettlebell or a single hand weight, Shred-It with Weights features two 30-minute boot camp workouts including a warm-up and a cool down. Level One is designed for beginners, with arm presses and rows that sculpt lean muscle. Level Two, features intense jumping presses and powerful lunges created to engage the core and fire up muscles.

I just discovered this today and was super excited about it!

A new Shred? HOW EXCITING!!! I skipped yesterday (my back hurt too bad) plus I went out with some friends to watch LeBron's Decision (being an Ohioan and all).... but today I am back at it L2 D4!!! I feel like my body is already a completely new body! I can't believe I am able to do some of these moves!

L1 D6 completed. I am actually able to do the Anita push ups now for almost the whole circuit. My hamstrings are still pretty sore but the rest of me feels fine.

Here's my 3-week check-in. I've been doing 30DS 3 times/week in order to fit in running at least 4-5 days/week. Also, when I do it daily it still hurts my ankles a bit so this seems to be my happy place. I guess I'm doing the 65-day shred!
I definitely see the difference in the way my clothes fit. I wish I'd done measurements before, but I can see it especially in my waist. I'm naturally pretty muscular so it's starting to make me look a bit burly in the shoulder area, but oh well - blame those pushups!
My weight loss has been steady but oh so slow. I've lost 0.5 pound/week for these 3 weeks, and that's with LOTS of exercise and good calorie counting, averaging 1450 calories/day. Darn scale! At least the 30DS is doing wonders in the toning department.

Good job everyone!

You guys are not going to believe this. I have done 8 workouts straight of Level 1. My weight hasnt really budged since 7/7 BUT:
I've lost 2 INCHES off of my hips!!
1.25 inches off of my stomach
And 1 inch off of my waist in 8 days!!

The only time I've ever 'melted' like that is when I was on the Atkins diet . . . all the while I was hungry and cranky. Not fun.

The only thing I've been doing diet wise is cutting my portions down to a quarter to one half of what I'd normally eat.

I am a miserable failure. It has been so darn hot that I haven't been doing the shred. I am still walking though..early in the morning. I guess I am going to drop out. Not feeling motivated. Wishing you all success as you finish up your shredding!

Heat sure is an exercise motivation killer. I have to get it done first thing in the morning because otherwise it just ain't gonna happen.

It's the end of the 30 day challenge, right? How did everyone fare? I am still on the 3x/week shred, that is plenty of toning for me and it allows running too. My only complaint was and still is the ankle stress, I'd never had ankle pain before doing 30DS regularly, and I've run marathons! Not sure why, I guess all the jumping. But the toning was better than anything I've done before so the video is definitely a keeper.

Did anyone manage to do it daily? If so I am REALLY REALLY impressed!

I did 7 days straight of L1, but quit, so I'm going to try and get back into it. I only started the week before last, so I did 4 days of exercise last week. I guess that's not a total stop. I plan to get back into it once I feel better.

I am on Day 19 (L2). I have been pretty stubborn about completing the video every day. (Case in point: last night, I had worked all day at a softball tournament, returned home at 9pm to complete some housework and found myself completing the shred video at 11:15pm. For the first time, I thought I was going to vomit afterwards. The satisfaction of sticking with it is exhilarating)

I didn't take measurements before I started my 30 days (July 1), but I plan to take measurements on July 30 and will compare to measurements from May.

I'll be doing Day 8 or 9 of L1...of course I'm half-assing it since I work-out from a wheelchair but I can bare up to 75 lbs on my left leg now so I do stand up when they are standing just can't jump or squat, etc. I tried on some size 15/16 pants that were new the other day, went to my doc appt and kept having to pull them up. I can only imagine what this video could do for me if I could do it normally.
Can I ask you ladies if you think I should move on to Level 2 or just stick w/my half-assing Level 1? At this point I'm looking for cardio and then the upper body weights is cool too.
Keep it up ladies and hope you all have a great week!

today is my last day of the shred!!! i have done 29 consecutive days, just need to complete today (10 days at each level).

i cant wait for it all to be over, just because it takes over my whole lunch break and i need to be able to do other things but i think i will still complete each level one day a week, so 3 times a week, just to keep ontop of the toning.

I will post weight loss results and measurements tomorrow when i have checked them.

If i can do it anyone can, keep up the good work ladies

way to go, charlirox! That is really awesome. :cp::cp: I look forward to hearing about your results!

I know this challenge is kind of "over" but I'm starting today. I've done level 1 a bunch of times in the past but if I'm being honest with myself, I don't think I ever *really* had the intention of going the 30 days. Today I do, and it's going to be great! :)

RESULTS!!!!!!

i think i messed my measurements up, beacuse the way i look now and the way clothes fit i think i have lost a lot more than the measurements show

bust -5cm
back -2cm
waist -4cm
hips -2cm
thigh no change

sorry my tape measure is in cm not inches.

weight loss: 8 pounds.

i am very disspaointed with the results but i dont think they are right.
i have definately replaces some fat with muscle though, but i didnt check my body fat before or after so wouldnt know how much that has changed.

I'm thinking about buying this. I always read about it from Laura Wright (an actress on a Soap show) who seems to love it.
