Patch,
you'll get down, I'm sure of it.
In my experience, Italy is one country that it is fairly easy to eat moderately. Pasta dishes are not swimming in cream, the meat is often grilled. The portions are not large and the spinaci, bieta, insalata mistas etc. will keep you happy.
The cornetti are not bad either. They are not the size of our croissants, more like our minis.
You are hitting Italy when the fruit and veg are amazing. If you are going to Tuscany, then skip the bread (its awful) and enjoy a nice barbaresco. If you are going to Rome, enjoy the bread and enjoy Tuscan wines, if you are going to venice, forget the food and enjoy Tuscan wines (you are getting the picture)...
Hopefully, you will be getting lots of walking in also. In alot of places, that is the best way to get around.
Okay, nuf said. I just got an email from my Rome pal. I'm checking DP's calendar, we're going to Rome for a week in either January or February.
