UK Fat Chicks - Red and Green Days

Hello to anyone out there who knows what I am talking about. On Wednesday I joined Slimmers World ( I don't know if I'm supposed to put the name of the organisation ) in yet another attempt to lose weight before I become a fat old woman as opposed to a fat middleaged woman. Anyone who is doing or has done it will know what I mean with red and green days. Tell me does it get easier to understand and have you any recipes you can reccomend (sp). I know it works because my friend's niece has lost 6.5 stones and my colleague at work who has spent the last few months persuading me to go has lost a stone.

Hi Cherry.
I've been doing slimming world for 6 weeks now, and I'm sure you'll get the hang of all the green/red day stuff quite quickly. Most people seem to have it all sorted out within a week or two. I only do green days though myself, as I'm a vegetarian.
As for recipes, there are quite a few places you can look.
The slimming world website - http://www.slimming-world.co.uk - has lots of useful info on it, including recipes, and a question and answer section if you're confused about something. And if you go here - http://www.slimming-world.co.uk/sins/index.htm - you can check the sin values of products online.
There's an msn group dedicated to Slimming World, you'll find quite a few recipes there too. http://groups.msn.com/SlimmingWorld/messageboard.msnw
This page has 143 recipes that people following the diet have come up with: http://www.droylsden.net/docs/143_Recipes.htm
Last but not least, you can buy the magazine in class for £1.40, which contains recipes, success stories etc. It only comes out every 2 months though. And there are recipe books available to browse/buy in class.
Good luck with it all!

hello cherry coke.
i have been on sw for 2 weeks now and after losing 2 stone 6 just by calorie counting i got stuck for 2 months at the same weight! the last 2 weeks i can proudly say ive actually started losing again! its only 3 lb but at least im moving down those scales again! so it does work.
i dont actually go to the classes but bought the book that covers absolutely everything! and have just followed that word by word. i found it difficult at first but you soon find out what foods you like on each day and i found them to be my 'base foods' with something different every now and then. sw is highly recomended cos you never have to go hungry! which is always a bonus! my aunty lost 4.7 stone in no time at all cos all of the ss foods. so make sure you get plenty of them down you for each day.
congrats on the weight loss, after all, like every1 told me last week 1lb is 1lb lighter! keep at it, and it does get easier. may i ask where in the uk you arefrom?
keep talking. spk to you soon

Hi Emma
Thanks for your input. Even though I was disappointed by Wednesdays loss I haven't let it put me off. I did a green day today, though I usually stick to red. I have discovered a cottage cheese that I actually like. It is Tesco's own brand and has chunky vegetables, it is really tasty. My group leader phoned me tonight to make sure I hadn't fallen by the wayside. I have also tried to increase my water consumption over the last 2 days.
I live in Derbyshire which I think is a beautiful county but I'm biased as I was born here. I bet you miss Wales. we spent 2 weeks just outside Aberystwyth in August as my daughter is working there at the moment. We were lucky and had some gorgeous weather. I love Wales but have never been any further south than Tenby.

Ayup Welshbird!!
i am living in Enfield, North London, but am a Yorkshire lass, married a londoner and ended up down here.
When i lost weight befor i got to 10-7 I was really slim then, and kept it off for years but am just aiming for 11-13 cos it is such a long time since i was slim and I am a bit older now. I don't look any further than the next 1/2 stone , it has been such a large(!) task, i have plateaued throughout the summer but have started working full time and all the walking to and from work has helped. I don't seem to have much time for myself these days but am working hard to try and manage my time better, any tips anybody!!
Hope you all have a great weekend!!

It's a lovely Saturday morning in Derbyshire too and like you TQ I've just come back from the Supermarket where I bought 2 large packs of cottage cheese with vegetables.!!!!
I wish I was taller, I can't even make 5ft so I feel as wide as I am tall and daren't tell you how much I weigh.
My group leader was telling me that a lady phoned her who was too ashamed to come to meetings and has asked if she will visit her at home to weigh her. Thats sad isn't it. For purely selfish reasons I wish she would come then I wouldn't be the biggest there!!!
welshbird

hi mavis, nothing selfish bout that!! there is always some1 bigger than you out there!! tq, great idea you have not looking past half stone, it just gets too depressing otherwise, doesnt it?!!!!
11-13 is a great weight to head for, at your height you probably wouldnt need to look at being any lighter! who does have enough time for themselves? i certainly dont, so i know that feeling. maybe we should open upo a new thread of, 'pamper yourself for the nite and let us know......' you know, face masks, nails, makeup, try allsorts of hairstyles, nice steamin bath etc, etc! cos i dont know bout you but i feel my greatest when ive done all that for a nite out!!
take care all

My only vanity is my nails which I usually have done every week, they are usually long talons which I delight in having very dark red. For some reason they have gone dry and flaky and the ends are peeling. My manicurist cut them down but they have still managed to break and splinter even more. She is on holiday for a fortnight and will have a fit when she sees them. I also have my eyebrows plucked and because she is away I am starting to look like a female Dennis Healey. I can't do them myself because I can't see without my glasses. By the way had a red day today, my fave cottage cheese and ryvitas plus some grapes for lunch and a boiled ham salad for tea followed by my treat of strawberries and ice cream. I have consumed numerous pieces of fruit throughout the day. I love summer fruits and don't know what I will do when peaches and nectarines are finished.

I am a summer fruits fan too, the english plums that are around at the moment are wonderful and 3 plums=1 point on ww so i am happy!!
My nails are a disgrace would love long lovely nails, i don't bite them but just break them very often. I too am a Dennis Healey lookalike, must get to the salon and have them done.

Another good day though I took myself off into the bath for about 2 hours this afternoon just so I couldn't be tempted. i went out with my husband earlier on for a spot of retail therapy but he was the only one that got anything, there was hardly anything to fit me and what there was was tat. Life stinks sometimes!!!
welshbird

hello every1.
know the feeling on the retail thing! i usually go out to 'treat' myself and end up treating the kids instead!! i get so bored of seeing size 14 and under!!!! like my hubby says wen we r shopping, it seems that if your not a size 2 you dont get newhere in this world!!! same with mens clothes. hes a 38" waist and can never find 'those' clothes that you see other, smaller men wearing!! great fun isnt it?¬!!!! not!!!!!!!
as for nails and things, my nails are also a load of rubbish when it comes to growing them! i used to bite them allllooot when i was younger and now they grow, and as slow as they r 2 grow, they r as fast to break!! would love to hae good nails. they say its all to do with calcium!!! as for eyebrows, got horrible shaped 1s so have to pluck them myself every few days!! i will treat myself soon tho. maybe when me n hubby go away.
spk to ya swn

Well another week nearly gone and its weigh in again tomorrow. If I don't crack half a stone this week I will be devastated as I have been so good. My main problem is lack of exercise because I have the most disgustingly swollen arthritic knees. I just about get round Tescos on Saturday am then I've had enough. I saw a book advertised in a Sunday magazine, it was written by a fitness instructor when she got cancer at the age of 25 but was determined to keep her fitness. Its called "Rosie's Armchair Exercises" I was thinking about sending for it, anybody heard of it and got any feedback.

Wheeeeeee!!
I just got back from my weigh in and I lost 4lbs this week which makes a total of 9 in 3 weeks so I am very pleased. I bought a book that gives the sin value of hundreds of branded goods and supermarket own brands and the porridge that I have every morning and count as a sin free healthy option is actually 7 sins so I am a bit gutted at that. I do love my porridge and especially with winter coming on, gets me out in the morning and relatively fit to do a days work.
I'm going to sit and read my book now to see if I can find an alternative.

Yesterday DH and I took my sister in law out for a birthday lunch and I expected everything to go belly up (looking down now an appropriate phrase) Anyhow I didn't have a starter and for main course I had an 8oz sirloin steak with pepper sauce, I had new potatoes instead of chips ( a first for me when eating out ) I gave hubby my fried mushrooms, no hardship because I don't like them. So if I call it a red day my meat is sin free, my potatoes are one of my healthy options, the only thing I can't put a value on is my pepper sauce. We didn't have a pudding there but took her to a garden centre where we went for a cup of tea where I had a strawberry tart with fresh cream. It was gorgeous. But unlike previous times I didn't think oh I've blown it today and carry on gorging I was good for the rest of the day. The best bit is when I got on the scales this morning they went down 2.5lbs. I know they may may move up again tomorrow but it really made my day.

How are you finding it so far, I have to say I haven't felt hungry, its just the occasional cravings for something sweet (which my husband can't understand) and I don't want to start having anything as part of my sins because I know what I'm like. Once I start I can't stop.

Hello new member here!
Just to say I am doing Green days only (as vegetarian). I am finding it really ok (a few hiccups when I forgot to check up on 'sins'). I love the fact that I can have pasta, potatoes and rice. It really fills me up (and I am very greedy!). I love trying out recipes but also keep some packet on hand for those cannot be bothered or got nothing in days.
I have a feeling that when I (carefully) step up on the scales tonight for the Monday weigh in, it will not be good news. However, I did go out to a Greek Restaurant on Friday (non low fat Hummus) and it is a 'star' week as well.

Welcome Peacock,
If tonight is your weigh in best of luck. I usually do 2 green days a week though I only eat poultry once a day on my red days, and I very rarely have red meat. I wish that I liked fish more. I don't know if you have read the earlier posts but my best find has been Tesco's Very Low Fat Cottage Cheese with Crunchy Vegetables. I have always said I don't like cottage cheese but I find this really delicious especially as it is sin free.

Well I lost 1.5 this week and I am pleased with that. I got my first half stone award today and my dh said ' you are 25% of the way there!' I think that is a good way to look at it!
I love cottage cheese (Yes I am wierd!) and have it most days for lunch. One of my fav's on any day is a small jacket potato with cottage cheese covered with my special topping.....2 slices of bacon chopped and cooked in a dry small pan untill done. Then I chuck in as many sliced mushrooms as I can fit in the pan, put the lid on and give it a good shake! After about 2mins of shaking and cooking you have a pan full of lush bacon flavour mushrooms. This is just delish and I have it on omelettes too!
Hope you are all well!

Hi Cherrycoke!
I lost the princely sum of 1lb. This is not bad considering it is a 'star' week and I had been out to a Greek restaurant on Friday. One things that 'bums me out' a bit is most of the other ladies in my class go out regularly at the weekends and drink and still lose. I do not drink now because of very high BP.
Yes I used to loathe cottage cheese but it is (sort of) ok now. One week we brought in some cooked stuff and the class leader brought in a sort of quiche which consisted of cottage cheese, a made up packet of Pasta n' Sauce and an egg. This was actually delicious. Some others brought in some Hoummous (however it is spelled this week!), made without tahini it is less sinful but still very nice, and someone else made a sort of black bean stew with rice and stir fried veggies. I am not that fond of stir fry unless it is smothered in a spicy sauce but I did love the black beans and have made a black bean casserole myself with spicy rice. YUM!

The phrase sick as a Skegness donkey springs to mind. I had pledged to lose 3lbs for my weigh in on Wednesday which would take me to my first stone, however so far the damn scales haven't budged and I can put my hand on my heart and say I haven't cheated. This is the weight I got to last year after losing 3.5 stone and because I stuck then for what seemed like ages I eventually got fed up and 14 pounds galloped back. I do so hope that its not going to happen again.

Hi,
I haven't posted for a while, but I have ben lurking ... I saw Mavis' cry of anguish and had to respond!!
I have lost a lot of weight (I am 1lb off my target now at 9st 8lbs) and I found that I can often be perfectly good one week and show no loss, then show a loss of 2-3 lbs the following week as long as I am still good.
So the thing to do is not to let it get you down, keep up the good work: it seems like your body sometimes wants to wait an extra week before it gives you the good news!
Goooood luck!!! You will succeed
I also wanted to say thanks to all the funny, encouraging and inspiring people out there in 3FC who helped me in changing my size and my life. I'm glad I found you. You all deserve to reach your dreams and I sincerely hope you do.

Thanks to Anna and Nicky for taking the trouble to reply and buck me up a bit. I don't think I will throw in the towel this time, hopefully not anyhow.
In reply to your question Anna I don't drink any fizzy drinks at all these days. To try and get the water down I add a little drop of Light Ribena but one of the problems is that I don't drink enough water. I also don't use much salt, the only meal I add it to is what I call a cooked dinner you know meat and 2 veg. Though these days I'm more inclined to eat about 5 veg to try and fill me up.
Nicky if you are still lurking, how much have you lost and how long did it take you.
By the way does anyone know how much is 10 dollars in pounds sterling. I downloaded something called Weight Commander and I have to send the money for it.

Well I weighed last night and I had stayed the same, better than gaining I know but still a bit disappointing. The only thing that bugs me a bit is that I had actually lost half a pound but my club doesn't measure halves, they knock it off down to the lowest whole pound. I had a bit of a duff week last week. Just felt a bit blah. I wasn't really interested v. much in dieting and didn't go to the gym, had a takeaway and too much booze. Anyway, I can't have been as 'bad' as I thought as I have been back on track all this week and the scales show a loss - phew.
Mavis, do you eat a lot of fruit? i know that it is free but we had one lady who was eating 4 banannas a day and was stuck on a plateau. She changed to one bananna and some apples and got things going again.
People are starting to notice now and that is great - a real motivator. I just really need to avoid booze at the weekend or find a way to save sins just for Friday nights.

Hi Peacock!
It's funny how some foods just have a bad affect on some people and other people can eat them all day long!
I can remember when fruit was NOT free so I find it hard to let go of that mentality. I love this plan but I have a small frame and have to be quite strict with myself about portion sizes. I know that today for example, I could theoretically eat as many banannas and pasta as I like - If I did that though I would simply not lose any weight. I have really decent portions, as much as my dh but try to fill my plate with some free veg especially ss veg. So far that is generally working for me.
I know that in the beginning I took the eat as much pasta/rice/tatties thing a bit too literally!
Peacock
10-23-2002, 01:10 PM
Easily done AnnaD! I have to stick to reen days really as I am veggie. This is the best diet I have been on as I not used to being able to stuff myself with potatoes, rice and pasta. Great!
In all other diets you can only have about 1-2oz which is nothing!

10-24-2002, 02:12 PM
Yes Yes Yes
I lost 4lbs making a total of 15 in 7 weeks so I am feeling a bit more cheerful. I do eat a lot of fruit especially bananas and grapes which in the back of my mind I regard as no nos. I eat 2 bananas and 4 ryvitas every morning for breakfast. I always used to eat Oatso Simple porridge but according to my book it is 7 sins so I swapped. what do you think?
Plus what do you think about cous cous? My work colleague who persuaded me to try Slimming World told me to buy some which I did "Lemon & Coriander", when I looked it up in my book it is free on a green day but 100gms is 17 sins on a red day. Its big differences like this that I can't get my head round, especially as you can eat meat on a green day if you count it as a healthy extra or count it in your sins. As my husband so charmingly puts it , " It all goes down the same hole. "

Hi Cherry Coke
To answer your question about Cous Cous I guess it really depends if you want to stick to red or green days. If you like COus cous it may be better to decide to go green for the day, then as you say you can have meat as a halthy option should you really want to eat meat on that day.
Some people cannot get on with red days at all (I have no choice being veggie! I have to go green!). SOme prefer red as cannot get their head around how much rice, pasta and spuds they can eat. I guess the reds get frustrated that you cannot eat meat and pasta/rice together. So much of our food - how we are used to eating it has had to change.
As I say try a green day once in a while if you want cous cous - maybe have it for lunch with prawns or a bit of chicken as healthy extra.

Thanks for your input Peacock and TQ. I haven't been brave enough yet to try the cous cous though I do seem to have mostly green days now. I usually eat chicken or tuna as a healthy option on 3 days but I eat very little rice or pasta, mostly fruit and veg with some gravy as a sin. I maintained again last week and lost 1 pound this week making 16 pounds in 9 weeks which seem slow to me. I know the slower the better but I am 16st 8lbs and only 4ft 11.5ins tall so there is a lot to go at. I sometimes feel I am climbing Everest backwards. Plus I had to go to hospital last week for one of those awful gynea things (I'm coming back as a man) Anyhow I was so tensed up they couldn't do what they wanted, whats the reaction, "Normally we would put you under to do the proceedure but because of your weight etc etc etc!!!" Since April 2001 I have lost nearly 4 stone but remarks like that really bring it back how big I still am.

You are getting there, don't let their ignorance get you down, one day at a time or in my case, one meal at a time!!

Well I have only put on half a pound. So I am now 13/3.5. I know why I put on weight. I have been comfort eating chocolate. Well it will soon come off again. I do hope to lose more before Christmas and I am determind to.

Lost 3 lbs this week after maintaining last week so I'm quite chuffed about it all. Thats 19lbs in 11 weeks, so it gives me incentive to keep trying.

Well done cherry!
I sometimes think that we should only weigh in once a fortnight rather than once a week. Its so easy to see no weight loss over once week if you're a little bloated or something which is very demoralising. If you have lost weight over a fortnight, I think its less likely that the scales will be fooled by anthing like that.
But then, if we go off the rails we need to stop that as soon as possible, and wouldn't it be easy to ignore the first week of dieting if we only weighed every two weeks! Might be a bit of a disaster. :)

I went Christmas shopping today and ended up buying myself a coat but the greatest news of all it was a size 20. I can't remember the last time I bought a 20. If I'm honest I have to admit its a generous fit though it was from Evans and I don't always find them generous, still the label says 20 so I am one happy bunny.

Weigh in tonight, joint slimmer of the week and a loss of 2lbs which takes me to 21 in 12 weeks. Two more stickers to put in my book.

Latest update: another 4lbs lost making 25 since beginning of Sept. I hope Christmas doesn't knock me off track too much.
