Default Do my HR monitor's calculations seem right to you?

I have enjoyed using my heart rate monitor for a month now. It is the kind with a chest strap and watch. The brand is Bion. I bought it specifically for the calories burned feature. It doesn't tell me my calories burned for the entire day like a body bug but when you start the clock, it will calculate based on your heart rate until you stop it. The calculator only asks for your gender and weight (186 lbs now) to make it's calculations.

I usually use the monitor when I do my Leslie Sansone power walking videos. I walk at pace of 1 mile per 12 minutes and sometimes lift weights or do other resistance exercises with the walking. Squats, kicks and lunges are also included. My HR is usually an average of 140 with a range of 125- 160 during the workout. My average video is 4 miles and takes 60 minutes with cool down. The calculator tells me I burn almost exactly 150 calories per mile and a total of 590 - 650 calories for a 60 minute workout depending on how much resistance I use. Does this seem right for a 5' 3" 186 lb person with a large frame? I hope these numbers are not way off and I am really only burning 300 calories or less. I work really hard for these calories!

Any feedback is very appreciated. I like to feel secure that I am on the right track with my exercise

I'm 203, 35 and female. When I walk 4 miles with Leslie, I usually burn about 400 calories and my HR averages about 140 also. Yours seems a little high to me, but it could be right depending on your intensity.

Well, the walking workout I do is Kim Lyons. That is paired with a little bit of resistance work before the walking portion.

My ave HR when working out seem to fall between 135- 145. So similar to you at 140.

The 26 min "Green ones" get me somewhere around 250 ish.

The 30 min "Purple ones" get me somewhere around 300ish calories on my HRM.

So if you are getting 600 ish for 60 min, I don't think it sounds outrageously out of the ball park.

A.

the rule of thumb is approx 100 calories burned per mile....this is a VERY General statement. i also find the better shape i am in, the less calories i burn.

Good luck..you are doing great!

Thanks gals I think things seem about right then. I was only looking for a ball park number anyway because no equipment is 100% accurate. I just didn't want to think I was burning a bunch of calories when I was only burning 100 or so
