So, I sliced off the tip of my thumb with a mandolin slicer. Besides walking, what exercise can I do? I don't want to run (well, I want to, but I don't think it's a good idea yet). All that bouncing and increased circulation, I just want to give it a few days. Am I grounded, or is it ok to run?
2, I'd imagine lower body strength work would be OK, especially if you could keep your hand above your heart...squats, lunges, etc can definitely raise your heart rate, but if the hand is up, the blood flow shouldn't be THAT bad in the injured hand.
3, walking is good, and again, you can keep that arm up/from swinging...maybe keep it in a pocket to minimize bouncing, or even a sling if you have one.
I sliced into my finger about a month ago with a box cutter. It was the most brutal cut I have ever had, and I have sliced the tip of a finger before. I made sure I cleaned it really well, and kept it covered, but I did nothing different as far as exercise goes. I even thought that the increased circulation may have helped quicken the healing process.
I am scared of mandolins for that very reason. I lost the hand guard, so when I use them I use them until I have about 2 inches left of whatever I am slicing, then hand slice from there. I hope your thumb heals soon.
Honestly, I'd give yourself a few days of easy exercise. Also up your protein and fat (within your calorie limits) and take an extra multivitamin for the next few days.
You're scared of mandalinn? She doesn't seem that scary to me
Sorry, I could resist.
Alicat, take it easy and I hope you heal quickly! I think if you start doing an exercise just make sure your thumb doesn't start throbbing or something. Our body's tend to send us signals. I understand being careful though.
I ended up going to the ER the night it happened, they bandaged and cleaned the sucker. I'm happily on the mend, and will return to running tomorrow after 3 days off! It's been good for me, because I really have to stay within my calorie limit with no exercise. I'm going to try to continue that even when I start running my 5-7 daily miles.
