Do you have one? Potato chips are mine. It's been two weeks since I've had one potato chip and it's been so hard. It really has. Lay's kettle cooked potato chips were my absolute favorite. I could eat an entire bag in two days, probably one if I allowed myself to. (Two days seemed a lot better to me, then. How awful!) I thought about slowly weening off of them by replacing them with baked lays but that never worked for me in the past. So, I cut them out of my diet completely. Not sure I can do this forever but I'm afraid if I allow myself one chip, I'll end up eating the entire bag.
Anyone else out there have a food you thought you couldn't live without?

I can't live without icecream. :) And I don't try to make myself live without it.
I keep a small container of icecream in my freezer and have a little when I'm craving it.
Try to find some way to satisfy that craving in a healthy way. You don't want to deprive yourself so much that you end up blowing your potato chip top and eating 5 bags. :P

For me it would be fast food and cheese. I still use parmasean and occasionally a little bit of the real stuff but oddly, I don't pine for it the way I thought I would.

Hey for the chip you may want to try this:
Take La Tortilla factory tortillas and cut it like a pizza. Spray it with non-fat spray and sprinkle with salt or whatever you want and bake it on a high heat until the texture is what you like.

Do you want a list? LOL
Pop is probably my big one. Even though I only drank the caffeine free, diet pop, I was still addicted. I haven't had any in almost 2 weeks.
Other than that, it's a tie between chips and baked junk (brownies, cake, cookies, etc).

Pizza for me. There were times in my life where it comprised at least one meal every day. I adore pizza, and when I started this diet, I was sure that it was the one food I couldn't do without.
But I've come to realize that I may have to do without it. I'm beginning to believe that eating pizza makes me more likely to binge. So I've cut myself down to one day a week, and may have to do without completely if I don't see improvement.

Fast food. I have cut back so much it is insane... but I don't see how people absolutely never eat fast food. some days we are just not home... some days it has to be done. When we do eat it I at least no longer get a coke but get water but other than that I haven't really started making too great of choices there. Its coming though...

Also fast food. I like to cook but I also like to eat out...unfortunate side effect of being a food lover. Also...Reese's. I can eat a Super-size bag in one day. And "dessert coffees," like a White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha with whipped cream....mmmm.

Again with the pizza and it's odd because I seem to have some kind of low level wheat allergy, I know as I'm eating pizza I will feel awful for the rest of the day and most of the following day and I still don't stop until I've finished the box.

I am constantly amazed by my ability to easily live without baked goods/packaged baked goods. Wow, I used to love scones, muffins, cookies, pop tarts, yogurt pretzels - they were probably my "favorite" foods before my lifestyle change.
Sure, I still have the occasional baked treat (usually some nice dessert at a restaurant) but it is far from a daily event. And it's NO PROBLEM.

I agree on chips (with cheese being a close second). My body has been trying to convince my mind to just not eat any calories all day and go pound like 2 orders of chips and salsa at Chili's. Or a whole bag of kettle-cooked salt and vinegar chips.
I also agree that I can't really replace with a healthier thing (at least not yet). It just spurs cravings and inappropriate portions sizes too much.

Most people are saying pizza. I'll say that's one of my foods, even the homemade stuff. I adore ****'s pizza and get the Creator (where you choose the toppings) with double pepperoni and double parmesan. DH and I pick two up on the odd occasion- I'm getting the smaller snack size and eating half now, half the next day (6 very small slices for the whole thing) while he can eat a large one by himself over 3 days (he gets toppings I don't like, so it's a given I won't eat it). I've moved to just a single pepperoni and parmesan topping.
I also love sweets: lollies, chocolate, baked goods (brownies, scones, cookies, muffins, slices, cakes, etc). I've been baking low-cal/low-fat/low-sugar versions of my favourites. DH and I have a piece each every night for dessert until it's gone; my cravings are satisfied for a month or two.
I don't believe in denying myself anything, I just have to plan for it. But having said that, when I first started, I had to figure out what my triggers were (refined sugar), cut that out for a while and slowly reintroduce foods into my diet. I don't really like fast food; it's starting to taste a little like cardboard now; the taste never changes and that's just weird.

Hi! I haven't had ANY fast food in 22 months. NONE! It really wasn't all that hard. We have days were we have food fast...but it is home made, pre-made, nutritious, delicious stuff. It can be done.
To answer the OP's question, the one thing I didn't think I could live without, but have found it not all that appealing anymore is (real) butter. I use olive oil or nothing now in place of butter. I used to use at least a stick for every meal I made my family.

Fast food for me! I think I should cut it out completely. I went about a week without it not too long ago. Then I decided to have just one chicken soft taco from taco bell. It seemed to set me off and I found myself hitting drive-thrus twice a day. I think it's time to give it up again.

I thought taking fast food out of my diet would be difficult for me considering I don't cook and my life is pretty hectic but I've surprisingly handled it really well. I don't have cravings for it. At this point, it seems it was much more about the convenience than actually wanting the food I was putting into my mouth. Although, I admit, it does taste good. Haha.

Fast food, mainly In-n-Out, which is my very favorite. Every once in a while, I crave it but I've found that I can find other, healthier options.
While I miss the ease of just picking up a burger, I've also found its just as easy to carry almonds, a fiber 1 bar or an apple with me. Saves both money and calories!

Chinese takeout, loved it, still do probably but I won't eat it. I'm an addict one taste and I'm doomed so I just say no.
I do still eat chinese food, but I have brown rice and stir fried veggies. Shrimp and chicken dishes with vegetables and none of the rich yummy sauces. No egg rolls or crab rangoon, come on you can tell I sure would love to have some. Hee Hee, but I want to be healthy more, and have legs that don't rub together, ect ect.
Cravings are normal, we are human. But overcoming them makes us special.

It's really not difficult at all. Sure, there are times I have to eat on the run. Starbucks has fresh bananas and soymilk. Sonic has fresh bananas and apple slices. Running into a grocery store and grabbing some prewashed produce is just as fast as waiting in line at the drive-thru plus it burns a few calories. Honestly though, I rarely do any of these things. I keep food in my purse and always have something ready to go. The tastes I don't miss. Not at all.

Cheese - I gave up cheese for the most part when I first started on my weight loss journey. I then went vegan and gave up cheese entirely.
Pizza was never one of my things. I still eat pizza, cheeseless and it fits into my plan but I never really cared for pizza until after I started losing weight. Not sure why. Funny thing too is that 70 lbs of my loss included fairly frequent pizza outings (once a month). While I was going from 290 to 220, we were eating out at a local pizza parlor at least once a month, sometimes more. I wasn't vegetarian at the time but we usually ordered a veggie pizza (which had broccoli, cheese and other stuff on it), sometimes sausage along with the veggies. The pizza place is known for having nonfat crust/sauce and is really good. My husband used to joke because every weekend that I seemed to lose, it would be the weekend we ate pizza, he'd call it my 'secret fat loss weapon'.
We stopped going to the pizza parlor after we gave up cheese, mostly because it was hard to justify a pizza for $17 that was just crust, sauce and veggies. I'll either make my own once in a while or buy a frozen Amy's pizza.

Foods I cannot live without are as follows, but I make sure to add them into my daily calories once in a while as a treat!
Chocolate-I'll buy some good quality dark chocolate once in a while and have a small piece.
Pizza-I allow myself 2 slices a month from a pizza shop.
Peanut butter-I buy natural and allow myself one sandwich a week.
Homemade cookies--I just avoid em and I'm fine if I don't start.
But my personal Kriptonite, my thing.....CUPCAKES!!!!!!:devil::devil: Once in blue moon, I'll buy one a local bakery near work. Not having them ever again is not an option.

I absolutely abhor fast food. Ever since I was young, I hated fast food. The only exception was that once in a while I used to like having the bean burrito at taco bell. About 6 months ago, we were on a road trip in the middle of no where and I suggested we stop for bean burritos for old times sake. I knew that at 300 calories, it would fit into my calories but oh my god... I felt so sick after eating it. I forgot how heavy/dense they are and my stomach was so upset at me. I can probably count on my fingers how many times I've eaten fast food in my life and most of those times, it wasn't my choice. (And to think of it, that taco bell trip was the first time my husband and I had been out to fast food in our 5 year relationship)
I would disagree that it has to be done because we tend to travel with food or we go to places we like, such as Chipotle. If I know we are going to be gone all day, such as if we were going biking or hiking, I'd make sandwiches but usually I carry sometime of bar, such as a Luna bar with me, more for my husband than myself.

Mine would have been:
Bacon Baguettes - Usually smothered with Mayo
Chips
Chinese/thai takeout
All of these I've found a way of replacing them with healthy and/or smaller options, and I actually now prefer the healthy ones because they make me feel good as well as tasting good. Lays baked chips were my savior, they really are delicious. For the Baguettes I usually head to subway and have turkey with loads of spinach, lettuce and cucumber and the smallest amount of light mayo. And Chinese I cook myself wit low cal sauces, lean meats and brown rice.

Fortunately for me I don't have a fast food habit - it's nice when you realize that there is a barrier you don't have to worry about!
But I love sweets, and I loved our "old" cooking. We would fry up some potatoes, sausage, eggs, etc for breakfast on weekend mornings, for example. My SO is the gravy and sauce king - he's an outstanding cook.
We had lots of pizza, and there are a couple of world-class pizza joints around here. I miss that.
I didn't give up cheese, but I am pretty careful. As a snack or dessert I will slice up an apple and eat it with 1 oz good cheese (I love gouda, for example). sliced thinly, 1 oz is more than enough to top my apple slices.
Mostly, thanks be to whatever you hold dear, I don't have cravings these days and I'm able to say no to those things. But I never go hungry and I like the stuff I'm eating, so I guess it all works out.

This thread is delicious LOL.
My vice was chips and general salty snacks. I haven't touched a chip since I started losing weight in November. I have found it helpful to find healthier substitutions so I don't feel deprived. Smart Pop popcorn has replaced my higher fat snacks. It's not perfect but I feel better eating it than an entire bag of Mrs. Vicky's sea salt and malt vinegar chips in one sitting :o I also adore bacon and there is a running joke in my family that I am the bacon queen. I allow myself turkey bacon on occasion. Granted, its not a perfect substitute but its better than nothing ;).

For me, it's pizza and Chinese takeout. Those are huge binge foods for me. It was not uncommon for me to buy Papa John's pizza (well, I should say 2 or 3 pizzas) to eat for lunch/dinner all week, and then get Chinese takeout during that same week. And I'd probably hit up Wendy's at some point too.
I am shocked I didn't get over 300 pounds considering I had been eating like that for years.

There are a lot of foods that don't require ice packs that can be easily packed. Although even if you wanted a ham sandwich, just a small lunch cooler and an ice pack would last the day. I do it all the time for work and I've done it on road trips.
Things like a peanut butter sandwich, some baby carrots, grape tomatoes, celery and peanut butter, peanut butter/banana wrapped in a tortilla, etc are good things that last well without refrigeration and should be kid friendly. Although I'm sure you'd want to model healthy habits for your kid and have them follow, just because you feed your family X (whatever X may be) doesn't mean you have to eat it. You could pack something for yourself if need be.

Ice cream was my favorite binge food - so it is a definite trigger food for me, and I no longer miss it.
Eating healthy for the past 4 months (as opposed to dieting) is becoming a way of life for me. On occasion when I drive by a fast food place, my muscles get an auto-twitch to turn in, and I laugh at the realization at how unconscious my fast food habit was.
Being more in touch with my body, finding other ways to enjoy all 5 senses that nature gave us is one way that I cope. I surround myself with the pleasant smells of candles, hot teas; revel in the smell of my pets' furs and my sweetie's skin; pay attention to music rather than just playing as background clutter; enjoy the occasional massage or facial and let myself really experience the sensation; take time to watch the sunset and other beauties of nature. There are so many ways to treat myself rather than with food. (In fact I made list and keep adding to it.)

I've had fast food one time in 5 years! Just this Christmas, ended up having a chicken sandwich at a Walmart McDonalds. It was blechy, but the fries were fabulous (unless I read the calorie count on the fry cardboard box and couldn't eat another one!).
I wasn't a huge fast food eater before my lifestyle change (maybe once a week?) so it wasn't a tough habit to change for me.
I am just a very good planner, I love to plan! It's the trick that works for me and lets me be successful. Usually by Sunday, I know every meal/snack I'm going to eat for a week. And people say "ugh, how can you live like that! so much work, so much planning!" well, it works for me, and I am hardly ever stuck without anything healthy to eat. I KNOW what I'm eating and it just doesn't seem like a big deal.
I do occasionally eat "quick" meals out, but my big favorites are Panera (small cup of tomato soup, half a turkey sandwich with mustard and tons of veggies) and Chipotle (chicken bol no beans, double salsa, tons of romaine, tiny bit of guacamole).
Fast food just isn't even on my radar.
(Oh, I forgot, I did have Sonic last week. It was more for the experience though, the closest one is like 25 miles away. My fiance and I got some terrible news, didn't feel like cooking and he suggested Sonic as a place to cheer me up. The onion rings WERE good and a roller skating carhop did cheer me up).

Fried food, tater tots, french fries. These food were hard to give up, but I really don't miss them at all. I am addicted to bacon. I could never cut it out of my diet completely. When I have something like bacon, I`m sure to watch my portion sizes. For example, my meal for every lunch and dinner this week is spaghetti and bacon (spaghetti, diced tomatoes, bacon, onions, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and pepper... heavenly). Between the spaghetti and the bacon I know I`m taking in more fat than I should, so my portion size is smaller than if I was eating chicken breast and brocolli as my meal.
I`m also a chip addict... or rather I was. I haven`t had a chip since August. I know that if I allow myself to have one, I`ll never stop. I used to eat an entire bag of chips in one sitting. It was awful. I kind of got lucky last February and contracted a stomach flu which made me throw up after eating a bag of my favourite flavour of chips (sour cream and bacon)... I can`t even smell them now without feeling ill. I still like other kinds, but I feel now like I can resist them.
My dad tried to tempt me over the holidays when he made a big bag of popcorn to watch a movie with. He was going to slather the whole thing in butter, and I knew if I had that, I wouldn`t stop. So I had him give me a bowl plain before he put any butter on it. I was impressed with my willpower there!
Something I never though I could live without is pop. I only drink diet pop, but I still know it`s not good for me. I only had it twice between August and Christmas, and I found over the holidays that I didn`t even enjoy it as much as I used to. I thought it would feel great to have it again, but it was just blah. I think I might actually be able to do without for good.

That should be the best reason to start packing food and eating better. You want to your son to be healthy and learn good habits right?
My 4 year old daughter was my driving force behind getting healthy. While my husband and I weren't being all that healthy I REFUSED to let my daughter eat the same crap but once she got big enough to notice I knew things had to change.
That's one of my things, when thinking about eating something I think first, would I feed this to my daughter? If no, then I don't need to be eating it ether.
Do it for your son if no one else. It's very easy to pack stuff up. Peanut butter sandies and apple, orange. Some trail mix (this kind without chocolate) peanuts, almonds, dried fruit. Stop at the store and pick up something healthy from the deli just as easy as a fast food line.
Just my 2 cents.

I haven't had fast food in nearly 5 years! I think once you just consciously say to yourself "this is simply NOT an option anymore, if I fail to plan, I will go hungry" it's kind of an easy change. Well when I went gluten free my ENTIRE diet had to change. So now I keep a cooler in my trunk and if I'm going to be gone for more than a couple of hours I pack snacks. If I don't, I suffer the consequences. I'll admit it HAS been markedly more difficult since the Red Robin in town started doing gluten free....
As for foods I crave, I've noticed that if they aren't in the house, I don't crave them. It's that simple. If I buy chips at the store I will eat the entire bag. If I buy ice cream, I will eat the entire carton. So I just have to not buy them! If hubby wants junk food he has cash for the vending machine at work! Keep it away from me!!!

For those of you who are addicted to potato chips (count me in, along with all the other things listed and more!), why not make them at home? I used to do this and I think I will again: take a potato and wash it very well. I like to use it with the peel, but if you don't like the skin you can peel it off. I then slice the potato in thin slices, but not too thin, so that it doesn't burn. I lay them flat on a cookie sheet (I use quite a few sheets) that has been sprayed with a cooking spray. I then sprinkle salt on it, along with any other spices I might like. You could use paprika, garlic salt, chili powder, dill, etc....whatever you like. Then, you bake it until it is golden brown and crispy! It tastes so good that you feel like you're cheating! :)

Mashed potatoes can make me lose control. I still make "regular" food for my husband, and that includes a lot of meat and potatoes. Even licking the spoon can trigger a desire to scoop a big clump out of the pot and eat it standing at the stove, so it takes a lot of willpower to not even take that first lick.
My other weakness is candy. Jelly Bellys, Swedish Fish, gummy bears, anything fruity and chewy and...oh my I need to stop even talking about it right now. Even the "sugar free" Jelly Bellys have lots of calories, and I cannot portion control myself at all so it's best if I just avoid them altogether. My mother bought me a huge bag of Jelly Bellys at Christmastime, and I am proud to say that they sit unopened in my kitchen drawer.

When I was reading through this post I was trying to think what mine are and I guess since I've been without for so long I'd forgotten. None of the other posts jumped out at me but when I read yours I was like, yep, there it is.

For me it was Bagels, the giant New York style ones with extra cream cheese! I tried substituting those little mini bagels in the freezer section and fat free cream cheese but it just made me mad that I wasn't able to eat the real thing and I wanted one even more! So I decided to cut them out pretty much altogether. I have one about once every month or maybe once every other month but that is cut WAY back from having them 3-4 times per week.
As for a food that I STILL don't think I can give up it's CHEESE! I still eat cheese regularly but I've altered my consumption habits a little. I've started eating the fat free american slices instead of the regular ones and I also buy the low fat/reduced calorie shredded cheese. Also, instead of using so much cheddar or colby (my previous "go-to" cheeses) I use more parmesan and feta because they're lower calorie/fat. Feta has now become pretty much my favorite cheese!

I found out that my addictions changed every few weeks. For a while I would eat subway sandwiches at every occasion thinking they were the best in the world and I could never go without them and then, a few days later I would see a subway somewhere and would not crave it at all. Same goes for all kind of food. If I had candy, I would only have peanut butter cups for a while and all the other candy didn't exist, then it was those hanover pretzel pieces and so on. It's kind of weird.
I have the same problem with healthy food. At the moment it's raw oats with milk and dried pineapple. Whenever it's time to eat I want raw oats with milk and dried pineapple. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I only get it for breakfast. Although the other day I had it for both breakfast and lunch.

I don't know that there were any foods that I thought I couldn't do without - when I started losing weight I was kind of desperate and ready to do anything it required.
But I know that when I was out grocery shopping I'd be severely tempted at the checkout, as that's of course where they have the chocolate bars - Mars bars, Twix, all that stuff. It used to be so normal for me to stand there waiting in line and just grab a Bounty or something. Teaching myself to not do that was pretty hard - after all, all the supermarkets do it and we all need to get groceries!
But eventually I managed. Nowadays I stand there and sometimes there's a small voice telling me to get a packet of Mars Planets or whatever, but unless I've got room and a decent reason for it, that voice gets smacked. Hard.

Lizaly, I know exactly what you mean about changing addictions, although I call mine "phases"!
Salsachip, teaching yourself is such a good point :) I've had to tell myself like a little child all sorts of things to stop me buying junk at the shop, including thinking about fellow 3FCers in the shop and what I think they would do.
Having learned how to cook wholefoods instead of eating lowcal microwaved readymeals I have now gone off processed foods almost completely. :)

I will have to say I never thought of them as "addictions" just things I needed to get through the day..LOL
Mt Dew - To stay awake
Cheetos Puff Corn - the huge bag everyday
Fried Chicken and Catfish in the campus cafeteria
The chicken and fish were wed and fri staples. Those are the busy days at the cafeteria. I have not needed any of them. Although today I dropped my daughter at daycare and the gas station I would get the mt dew and puff corn is right across the street and I almost instinctively drove over there. I had to laugh at myself. The things we train ourselves to do!!

I found out that my addictions changed every few weeks. For a while I would eat subway sandwiches at every occasion thinking they were the best in the world and I could never go without them and then, a few days later I would see a subway somewhere and would not crave it at all. Same goes for all kind of food.
I'm kinda that way too. I figure it's natural. I don't think people generally had tons of variety day to day, whether it was 100 years ago, 10,000 years ago, or a 100,000 years ago. When something was in season (or freshly butchered) you had it a lot. Then you moved on to something else.

I agree its not that difficult for me to do with some foods but it is for my 4 year old. He can't just eat fruit all day..kwim? And if we are out shopping from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m (out of town) its not easy to have a ham sandwich packed for him. Well, I guess I am lying - it is easy but I don't want to. Not yet.
Not trying to argue with you BUT will your child eat cheese sticks or meat from the deli? Again, easy things to grab in a grocery store. Also, there is grilled chicken ready to go in bags in the meat department. I know it's plain not as easy as sitting in a car and wheeling through a drive-thru but think of the benefits for both of you! It's a little weird at first but me and my kids (I have two little ones) got used to it pretty quick.

Mine are potato chips and french fries. One thing that helped me was the statement "3 french fries have the same impact on your blood sugar as 14 cups of lettuce." :dizzy: I leave the french fries alone and have a nice HUGE salad.

MILK CHOCOLATE, brownies, cake and cookies. my sweet tooth is horrible.
But, I've learn to cut out these things as 'daily snacks' and use them as reward desserts. I'm trying to eat healthier, but a diet is not worth it if I can't eat the foods I love at least once a week. So, my rule now is not more than x3 a week. It also makes me savor them more.
