I had a total hysterectomy ~ 6 years ago (I was 42). I took the hormone replacement therapy for a bout a year, and then weened myself off of them because I was concerned about breast cancer. My obgyn said it was fine if i was feeling ok because most people my age their bodys can adjust. However - I have definitely gained weight and it is SO hard to loose it. I now wonder if my hormones are totally out of whack. Has anyone in this siutation gone to a dr to get their hormone levels checked? Did it help getting the hormones leveled out? I have heard of synthetic hormones which lessens the concern for breat cancer. I'm not sure where to turn.

I didn't have HRT so I don't know if that would help or not. You have reached your 40s and for every decade beginning with 40 you have to decrease calories by at least 100 a day just to stay even. It is harder to lose weight as we age. It's just one of those facts of life that we have to deal with.

I'm going thru that too.....I had a total hysterectomy last yr and gained 40 lbs. Every time I see a different dr. they disagree with the hormonoes that I'm taking and they change it......A bio identical hormone specialist told me that ppl without their ovaries need to be taking estrogen, progesterone and testosterone,,,,but I cant afford to see a specialist....I'm on the Ideal Protein diet and they told me without getting your hormonoes level that it is extremely hard to lose the weight.......I am really struggling......

i am just plain menopausal and find it difficult to lose at all. I have no need for hormone replacement, and don't want it at all, synthetic, bio-identical or anything. It would make sense that someone who has sudden or early and artificial menopause through surgery etc. would need hormonal support for a while, and that weaning down is best, not going off cold turkey.
I haven't heard that taking hormones makes weight loss easier. I know a lot of people who have lost weight in later life, with and without HRT and have not heard it makes a difference for people.

I have finally seen a hormone specialists and did the hormone tests.....got my results back today....it showed that my estrogen is okay, since your adrenal glands can still produce some estrogen and eventho I am talking 150 mg of progesterone, it didnt even register that I had it in my system, same for my cortisol level, which he said that when your cortisol is low like this, thats what causes you to gain so much weight in the middle.....and of course, he also said I need testosterone too.....he told me that alot of women dont realize they need hormone replacement because they are not having hot flashes and etc. but without the progesterone, you become excessively tired all the time......thats how I feel.....tired 24 hours a day !! he is putting me on bio identical hormone therapy which is a cream...
