As I mentioned in the last thread, I set up a Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=238829087496) for doing 1000 miles in 2010.

And today: +3.5! (However, I have to take a few days off; doing 120 miles last month totally wrecked me.)

Diane, You're a nutty in the best possible way. Enjoy the brief rest, you deserve (and need!) it!

My 2010 goals are suitably lofty for the hope and optimism of the New Year. Focus back on running:

Running: 1400 miles.
Biking: 1040 miles.

And we're off!

Today's run: 4.25 miles (I'm ahead of the pace bunny, W00T!)

Last year, before Christmas, I promised my personal trainer that I would participate in the next Colfax Marathon as part of a relay team. At the moment, there are four team members (all clients of my personal trainer). If no one backs out, I will be responsible for one fourth of the distance. I was brought up to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. So with that in mind, I have started my training today. I have 4.5 months to train. This will be my first time running in any kind of long distance race. If anyone knows of an assistant manager with a spatula, please let me know. :) (Reference to the movie, "Run Fat Boy, Run".)

Ok guys!

I've been running 9 miles a week for about 2 months. Since Friday, I've run 13.1 miles. Yea! Except that I've always heard that one should only increase one's mileage by 10% a week. I feel fine. Yesterday was a great run. No aches or pains. Stretching well. Should I do a rest day "just because"? Ennay, I know you went on a running streak where you ran everyday, even if it was just a short amount.....How did that go? If I was tired or sore I or feeling even a lick of an injury, I would take a rest day.....but I feel fine. I have a running base of several years even though my weekly mileage tanked out a bit in November and December. I feel like I've gotten my legs under me again and have felt very strong with my last couple runs (vs. feeling like I was dying through my wimpy 9 mile weeks).

Thoughts?

ennay
01-05-2010, 01:17 PM
midwife - I really liked the streak. As long as at least once a week was super easy pace it seemed to help me recover faster. I ended up streaking for 100 days.

I finally know now that my back injury isnt running related and in fact running helps it more than rest so if I had figured that out sooner I might have streaked for longer. The upside is there were days I didnt want to run and that can turn into several days for me but this way I got out there, the downside of streaking for me was that sometimes I just did the one and stopped.

I would listen to your body - even before I started streaking I frequently had streaks of 10-14 days and then would take a day off when it was convenient or when I woke up and my body said "dream on chicka!" I'd take an easy run today and keep going. One day the body may tell you to stop.

I feel more engergized with a 40 mile week than I do with a 20 mile week. I dont know why, but it is consistantly repeatable (now I am not saying jump up! The FIRST few times I hit 40 was HARD) but that may be why you feel better at 13 than at 9.

Edit: on the 10% rule (which was originally the 10-20% rule). Well....if you have never run before maybe 9 - 13 - 17 -21 etc. would be a bit fast, but returning to a higher mileage when you have been there before is not a stress on the bones and joints that a new runner experiences. The problem new runners face is that the bones and joints take approximately twice as long to adapt to new stress as the cardiovascular system. But they also dont lose it as fast.

Also the 10% rule doesnt really hold at the extremes. If you are not running at all what is 10% of zero? if you are running 50 miles a week 10% gets you to 107 miles in 8 weeks. nuh-uh. Even if you do buy the 10% rule it is 10% on AVERAGE, not any given week.

Other "rules"to consider - 1 mile per weekly run - so if you run 5 days a week you can up your weekly mileage 5 miles a week etc. Or for newer runners running short distances the 10 minute rule - add up to 10 minutes per weekly run - so if you run 5 days a week you can add up to 50 minutes a week spread out over the 5 runs or in a 6th run

I personally am a big fan of build build build stepback. So every 4th week you run fewer miles and then start building again.

Alright, count me in. I'm 44 and started running a couple of months ago. I would ultimately want to run a marathon, I'm training to hopefully do one in 6-9 months. Does that sound reasonable to any experienced runners out there?

I personally would not encourage new runners to train for a marathon in their first 6 to 9 months of running. Of course I don't know your situation, level of fitness, running background, sports history, etc. so take this as just one person's opinion.

However, you will find alot of experienced training advice that recommends a good solid 1 to 2 years of running before tackling the marathon. That is generally called having a good "base". The marathon distance can be VERY hard on your body and training for it can also be VERY hard on your body -- even for long-time runners.

If you are truly new to running, my advice to you is to realize that you have the rest of your life to enjoy the sport, so take your time and train up slowly, consistently, and injury-free! It will pay off in a BIG way if you invest your time in a slower, methodical approach to getting a good running base. You can truly ENJOY all of your runs! Put any stress or worry about distance or pace completely out of your mind -- you will, over time, go farther and get faster, there is no need to rush! There are many distances to run and all of them are fun! Enjoy them! :)

Edited to add: many new runners are anxious to rush the training process. They worry that if they alternate running and walking, or go slow, or don't go far enough that they aren't "REAL" runners. Trust me, the moment you commit to running and go out there and do ANY amount of it at ANY speed, you are a REAL RUNNER. The exciting thing about being a new runner is that you are going to have a boatload of FIRSTS almost every time you go out and train! Almost every week you are going to see dramatic improvements! It is thrilling. This is unique to being new to the sport, so really ENJOY it! Once you have been running for a long time, improvements in speed etc. come much slower and take much more work (in my experience) so really appreciate your experiences as a new runner!

You can count me in as a second opinion on this one! A full marathon is a very significant physical effort. Your body needs time to adjust to the demands of high-impact running. If you try to ramp mileage up too quickly, you risk injury and burnout. That's not to say that people haven't done it very successfully, it's just taking a risk, IMO.

I can share my own personal experience. I decided to run a full marathon after only a year or so of running. I had done a couple of half marathons and had a running mileage base of maybe 15-20 miles per week, tops. I did successfully train for and complete the marathon, but my knees were hurting, it was a real struggle, and almost burned me out on the sport of running. It ceased being fun for me. I ultimately ended up taking a 2 year break from running altogether. Thankfully I got over all that, started running again, and rediscovered my joy in running. In retrospect, I see that I was not ready and pushed my body past reasonable limits and paid a price for that.

There are so many shorter races that are just as satisfying and fun as full marathons. I'd suggest setting your sights on a half marathon first, and see how that goes. You still get the "event" excitement and a finisher's medal, but a half is MUCH less effort than a full. I totally agree that it's better to build gradually toward a lifetime of running enjoyment than to rush the process and get discouraged and possibly injured.

Just my 2 cents! (and I was over 40 when I started running too, so welcome to the adult-onset athlete club!) :D

Third this.

I would spend 6 months - a year building a solid consistent mileage base before even considering STARTING a marathon training program ( a decent training program is 4-5 months).

And consider this. You still have weight you want to lose. For weight loss, the marathon is NOT the optimal distance, especially for a new runner. The overall intensity level HAS to drop in order to accommodate marathon training. Certain aspects of long run fueling can take a lot out of a weight loss program, and during the last month of marathon training weight loss can significantly hamper your training. Even experienced runners often struggle with weight gain during marathon training.

I would train now for 5K and 10K's and in 6 months maybe start a HM training program at most.

No that's crazy! Actually the guy who ended up at 5250 miles last year (and missed the last 2 weeks of the year) just found out he will be racing on the US 24 hour race team at the world championships in France next may. He ran 142 miles in a 24 hour race last year.

+5.15 on Wednesday, treadmill
+10 on Thursday, stationary bike
+4.5 today, treadmill

Am going to try to get outside Sunday even though it will still be darn cold. Will see.

I've been running now for a little over a year, and am thinking about doing a half marathon in March. It is hard enough thinking about 13.5, I wouldn't be able to conceive training for a full right now. I'm thinkig about moving the half date back to summer, actually. Afrid the weather will interfere with the training.

Will doing too many 10k races interfere with training for a half? I guess I my if they all take place on my long run days and shorten the long runs, hmm?

Good day everyone!

I have some 5K and 10K's plotted out to do over the next few months since right now I am running btwn 4-6 miles a day depending on the day....I love to run.

Wow...I decided at the end of '09 that I was going to try to walk 1000 in 2010. I never dreamed there would be a big group of people here doing the same (shows how much I know  I feel like I've been serving as the Vice President of the Couch Potato Society of America (why only the Vice President? Because I'm too lazy to be President!).

Anyway...I've been off the forum...off of diets...off of exercise. But I got myself a Garmin Forerunner 305 for Christmas...and it makes walking SO FUN. I get to map my routes online, track exact distances, etc. So I have been doing pretty well at getting started (though the recent cold snap in Atlanta has thrown me for a bit of a loop!).

Big mistake. As soon as I got about 2 miles from home the wind picked up to 20-35 miles per hour with some rain. I was freezing and at points was almost being knocked on my butt. I have never said that many swear words while running.

I didnt like running with the yaktrax here but we never had the right kind of snow. You need dense packed snow for them to be really effective for running. Plus as I discovered I am more of a heel striker than I thought and that does NOT work with the yaks. If I lived in a consistantly snowy climate I would have to put some effort into forefoot striking.

My signature shows how far I've walked and biked but the weather is getting so cold I might have to stick with the bike for a while. Tomorrow the temperature is supposed to be -27 Celsius with the windchill factor (-16.6 F). I'll have to wait to see what it's like tomorrow morning. I hate to lose a day walking.

My silly gym closed down for the weather and I don't have the proper shoes to do outside jogs in the ice, so I had a few days with no miles, grrrr! Not only did it make me not able to catch up during January, now I'm further behind. Oh, well, such is life! I'll just have to work harder for February.
