South Beach Diet - Wintery Weekend Beaching

View Full Version : Wintery Weekend Beaching

12-19-2009, 07:14 AM
Good Morning:sunny:

It's very brisk here but it looks like the Wintery weather is back East today. I'm anxious to hear how all you Beachers are faring today on this last weekend before Christmas.

I'm putting one more batch of cookies in the oven this morning so I can get my last box in the mail. Then a quiet day at home before heading to Denver tonight for the Gospel Messiah, conducted by Marin Alsop.

What's everyone up to today? Come sit and chat a bit before you jump into the events of the day. :cofdate:

It is a snowy weekend here, but I have a date with my couch and I'm going to enjoy the storm. :) I'm glad I was able to get all my shopping finished yesterday!
Jake gave me my Christmas present early, and it's an expresso machine that I've been oogling for months. I'm enjoying a lovely cup of cappuccino right now while watching the snow pile up. :cloud9:

Debbie, thanks for getting us started this morning. Enjoy your day and the concert tonight.

12-19-2009, 08:08 AM
Hi Cottage! Your espresso machine sounds wonderful! What kind is it? Is it possible you don't have anywhere to go today?

12-19-2009, 08:13 AM
:sunny: :cofdate: :sunny: It's always sunny and friendly here on The Beach. It's -9F and it'll be sunny today. We don't have any snow predicted until after Christmas but they've been wrong before. It never seems as cold when we have lots of snow and sunshine.

Debbie, the concert sounds great. I play the Messiah a lot this time of year.

Cottage, a date with the couch sounds great too. Now that I've been to your house, I can see you all cozied in.

My trip to Waterloo and back was fun. My brother and SIL were very surprised and delighted to see us all. My nieces did a great organizing job. Laura even dug out my SIL's wedding gown and had it there on a mannequin. That was a nice touch as was the Powerpoint presentation of the past 30 years of their life.

Back to reality today. One of my dogs has the runs and I need to take a sample to the vet. Problem is....I don't know which dog.

Aside from that little problem, I'm on top of things although a tad late sending my cards to my small list. I need to do a bit more decking of the halls but all gifts are wrapped and party planning is underway. I'll do a big grocery shop on Wednesday for perishables. Two more batches of baking and some goodie making will complete the prep list.

This afternoon we have the big Build a Food Mountain event down at the grocery store parking lot. We'll be out there all afternoon in Santa hats, ringing our cowbells, and nagging people to donate. Luckily the store is very supportive and brings us out coffee and donuts! :yikes: Tonight is a birthday party for Eric who turns 8 and always has two parties - one for kids and one for his grown up friends. Spaghetti and birthday cake is on the menu so pray for me!

7:14 and it's just starting to get light out there. Time for a healthy breakfast of oatmeal and getting on with the day.

Happy Wintery Weekend! :cofdate: May your day be merry and bright!

Good morning chicks!!

Lexiss - did you need my address for those cookies ;). Oh dear no!! I don't need them, but I do enjoy hearing about them!

Cottage - congratulations on the espresso maker!! What's your favorite so far?

Ruth - I was tired just reading your post! Yummm...oatmeal sounds lovely today.

me - the snow has hit, although we're not supposed to get as much as further east (2-4"). I'm sure Ms. Reesie Pup will adore going out for a romp.

I was thinking of going to the Y for one more time this week (the belt on mine broke...found out it was under warranty and FREE!! YAY!!), but the cold my kids have has hit me full force it is a day of rest. Maybe I can sweet talk the DH into carrying the DD somewhere while DS is at a bday party...when am I supposed to wrap christmas presents?!?!

Shhhh...don't tell...Reese is up on the couch with me :D.

12-19-2009, 09:03 AM
Debbie, I have a Breville Cafe Roma. I'm still experimenting with getting the milk frothed just right, but the coffee's been delicious!

Ruth, it's great that you all were able to keep the party a surprise for your brother and SIL. I'm glad you had a good time. Your afternoon sounds like fun, and I hope you find out which pup has the runs so it can be taken care of!

Twynn, I hope your cold isn't too bad! My expresso machine is the regular kind that just makes expresso, cappuccino, or latte. I can add my own flavored syrups to the milk, but it doesn't use those flavored pods.

The snow is really coming down! I turned on the outside lights and it looks so pretty! We're supposed to get anywhere from 13 - 20" or more. I do feel bad for anyone who was counting on getting out and doing their shopping this weekend, but I'm glad I don't have anywhere to go and can just stay home and enjoy.
We were supposed to go to Carley's birthday party today in NJ, but Monica called Moonbounce yesterday and rescheduled the party for a later date. I hope Carley isn't too disappointed, but I know she'll have fun playing in the snow. Tomorrow is our family Christmas party at my brother's, but we'll just have to wait and see what the road conditions are by then.

12-19-2009, 09:39 AM

It has finally stopped raining/storming/flooding here and the weather is cold and clear. I am looking forward to my 2 week vacation from kiddos! And after yesterday I now remember WHY I hate classroom Christmas parties. OMG.

It has been a crazy couple of weeks around here. My son's girlfriend's mother passed away this week at age 52. I am so brokenhearted for her. She lost her grandfather 2 weeks ago. So her Dad lost his dad and wife within a couple of weeks. devistating. I can't imagine what they are going through. Girlfriend also has a 12 year old little brother who is now without a mom. Her oldest brother got married a few weeks ago, so at least her Mom was able to see one child married. It is going to be a really rough holiday season for them.
I met her Mom a few weeks ago for the first time. Lovely lady full of life even though suffering so many health problems.

Got my stove ordered this week, but it may not be in till the 8th of Jan!!! I was hoping it would be here sooner. Son's sweet Girlfriend LOVES to bake and I thought we could have a "diversion" afternoon doing some baking together. The funeral is tomorrow. Not the way I wanted to meet her Dad.

Nothing going on much here today. Going to take a drive to another town later that has a major pet store. Going to try a new dog food without wheat or gluten for my pup with the awful allergies. It's salmon and sweet potato. Anything to help him quit itching and us get a good night's sleep!

12-19-2009, 10:23 AM
Good morning chicks, we woke up to about 10 inches of snow on the ground and it's supposed to keep snowing all day. They're predicting up to another foot or so. Hope my ancient roof can handle it! No where to go today anyway, so we can relax and enjoy it. It will be a day of playing in the snow, baking cookies, and cleaning house. Still lots to do before the big day!

Oh, I love the Messiah, Lexxis. We used to go every year to hear the Naval Academy Choir perfoem when we were in Annapolis. I miss it. I'll have to pop in the CD later. Enjoy!
Ruth, nothing makes the season more special than helping others. Have fun and stay warm!
cottage, enjoy the espresso machine. You should be very productive the next couple of days!
femme, nice to hear from you. Sorry about the sadness. It's expecially hard to lose someone at Christmas.

Have a good Saturday all!

12-19-2009, 10:52 AM
Hi Ladies!
I missed the heck out of you all! Work has kept me quite psycho but only 1 more day till 2 weeks off!
Diane/Schmoo Your day sounds so cozy!
Cat a Big hug for you and your sons GF it always seems that tragedy comes in bunches you're such a good lady to be there for her!
Linda that stinks about Carley's Birthday but Playing in the snow is definitely a good trade! Pass the Cappuccino!
Tammy I want Puppy snow pics!
Ruth The anniversary party sounds lovely good luck this afternoon at the supermarket. . .Perhaps the Birthday party will have Meatballs?
Debbie I can smell your cookies from Here I love the Messiah we saw an Operatic performance at Carnegie hall it was so amazing and inspiring

I'm still in my robe haven't had coffee yet! christmas party last night so I'm rehydrating. James is hopefully on his way home from a Firecall then quick breakfast Shower and hitting the mall!
I have to do my sister 1 thing for Mom 1/2 things for Joe (My dad-type-person) and somethign for James if he'll let me (he already got his big gift)
I'm looking forward to getting back on the beach
having less stress!
and an awesome Christmas!

12-19-2009, 11:21 AM
Good morning chicks

Debbie - sounds like you sent off quite a few wonderful cookie boxes, lucky recipients. Enjoy your concert tonight.

Cottage - enjoy your expresso machine. CNN is full of news about your snowstorm.

Femme - Sorry you hear about the sadness during this holiday season. I know you will do whatever is possible to comfort the family. So did you get the stove you were looking at. A friend of mine got an aga stove and had to have a concrete floor built underneath it and extra beams put in the basement for support. Its quite a stove.

Twynn - a puppy in snow is so much fun to watch. Good luck on gift wrapping today.

Schmoodles - enjoy your time at home.

Ko - Brave of you to fight the crowds today.

Me - starting to feel better. DS is home and will be staying with us till mid January. I am happy. Starting to feel better and hopefully will get lots done today. Got to make my masterlist for the next two weeks. I usually just stay away from the malls and stores until the New Year.
take care

12-19-2009, 11:36 AM
Good Morning!

We are ready for the birthday party -- again. No throwing up this week! Hooray!!! We got LOTS of rain yesterday, so the ground is pretty wet. But, it's in the mid 40s and the plan is to play outside. I didn't bother to mop again. A little mud never hurt anyone. ;)

Debbie, I love the Messiah. I've actually sung in it several times.

Cat, I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

Everyone else, Happy Saturday! :D

12-19-2009, 12:27 PM
Good morning :coffee2: Had to get in here while it's still morning ;) I'm on my second pot already, don't tell. Woke up stupid early yet again. Blah

Debbie - The storm seems to be missing us too. Apparently we have enough snow already ;)
Sounds like a lovely evening.

Cottage - There are worse things than being snowed in with a new espresso maker and some good books!

Ruth - Sounds like a wonderful visit and party. Good luck with all the nibbles today

Cat - Sorry to hear about the losses. How sad for her. I hope the baking afternoon is therapeutic for her.

Schmoodle - Enjoy your snowed in day :)

KO - you're crazy woman! Good luck at the mall.

Sophie - I'm so glad you're feeling better. Sure hope it sticks for awhile!

Chelby - Happy partying :) I have this great handout about playing in mud that I always give new child care providers. I'm pretty sure they think I'm insane ;)

It's a quiet day here - just some cooking and chores. I have the Monday and Tuesday to get extra things done so I'm taking it a little easy today. I might even nap because I am exhausted.

12-19-2009, 03:33 PM
Yay! I found the proper legs for the tree stand before I decorated the replacement one. It'll go outside and my Bling Tree will rule the parlour! We will now sing three verses of Tradition from Fiddler!

I am baking a Sherry Cake for Church tomorrow and it smells really Christmassy in here. The recipe is food porn, of course.

12-19-2009, 04:17 PM
Ruth - Sorry I missed you this morning, I didn't mean to snub you. You think you reply to everyone and then after the message is sent oops, missed someone. By the way, I love the replacement for your avatar.
I too am making food porn right now.
take care

Hello all,

Today took DD to Ortho appointment, went to Target for essentials and then came home cleaned house, steamed cleaned the carpets and have been baking up a storm. Got cookies made for all of the neighbors and for work for Monday for our Christmas gift exchange.

Eastern chicks may you stay snug in your houses or playing in the snow :)

Tonight taking DD2 to see Princess and the Frog, since she was so nice and and her and I went to see Blind Side last night. It was really good.

Have a good evening.

12-20-2009, 07:14 AM
Good morning! From all reports, it's going to be a white Christmas for the eastern Beachers. Anybody snowed in? Some folks really got a big dump and even lost power. :( We missed it all up here but we will get hit later, I'm sure.

Church this morning. I'm in charge of coffee this morning and need to bake a batch of cookies right away. I made that sherry cake yesterday and it burned a bit! My oven may need calibration. On the other hand, never try a new recipe and a new pan at the same time. :nono: I really do know better.

After Church, some decorating, cards (finally!) and a bit of party prep cooking. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Sit and chat a bit before you jump or plough into the day. :cofdate:

12-20-2009, 08:23 AM
Good Morning!

Ruth, The only time I burn anything is when I have to take it somewhere or have to impress someone. Makes you want to say bad words! :p

I'm all recovered from the birthday party. Everyone had a great time. Auston was in bed by 7:15 last night and is still asleep. He was pooped out! I actually got in bed at 7:30, but watched Elf. That show cracks me up!

I got my assignments from the MIL yesterday. For Christmas, I'm in charge of cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm making the dressing today. Tonight is my night to cook for everyone on The Hill. They may get leftover hot dogs from the party. I'm going shopping! :)

12-20-2009, 08:31 AM
:shocksn: :snowglo: :snow4: :shocksn: I think we ended up with 16 to 20", depending where you are. It's a lot of snow, but it's just gorgeous! Today begins the digging out, and I hope our neighbor comes back with his snowthrower. He cleared us out yesterday during the storm, and I ended up giving him the rum cake as a thank you. But there's plenty of time to make another one. ;)

We're supposed to go up to my brother's in Collegeville for our family Christmas party this afternoon, and we'll have to see what shape the roads are in before we venture out there. The snowplow's been through our neighborhood, but the roads are still snow covered. The main roads should be in pretty good shape, though, I hope.

Sorry your sherry cake burned, Ruth. I bet it was good, too. But at least cookies don't take long to make. How was the birthday party last night?

12-20-2009, 08:42 AM
Wow, Cottage! That's a lot of snow, even for me. I hope your neighbour didn't eat all the rum cake yesterday or he will definitely NOT be back today to blow snow.

Chelby, I made a good recovery instead of making cookies. I trimmed the sides from the cake, sliced and buttered it and am calling it "sherry loaf". Your MIL has the right idea about assigning parts of The Dinner. I've never had corn bread dressing - must be a Southern thing.

Time to tiddle up for Church. No dogs are going today as I still can't figure out which one has the "problem".

12-20-2009, 09:13 AM
Good morning chicks!

RUth - my DH always asks me why I try I new recipe for guests. I sit there fretting how it turns out, giving excuses if it's bad. I guess I can't help myself!

Cottage - my DH would be jealous !! We got 5 - 6 inches here in central PA. He has his new snowblower, and was out with it 2 or 3 times yesterday (see facebook pic). It is beautiful!

Chelby - what a fantasy...a child in bed by 7:30?!?! Glad you had fun at the party! Did he get lots of good presents?! My DD received clothes from my mom in the mail, and had a basic melt down "I DON'T WANT CLOTHES, I WANT TOYS!!!". Wow. Too bad for her, huh? SHe was quite the crab that day!

Me - Church today, CHristmas "party" for work this afternoon. Still have that bummer cold, so probably not a whole lot else. For those of you who remember him, Matt is coming back today for the party!! :D

Have a great day chicks!

12-20-2009, 09:30 AM
Good morning :)

I never got around to checking in yesterday, it was a wild day! But a nice one.

Fergie and I went to North Conway to pick up a few last minute Christmas things and ended up staying longer than we'd planned. We expected crowds but it really wasn't bad and the prices were wonderful so we ended up visiting all those stores we like but don't usually make time to go to.

No snow for us :D We've got enough for our white Christmas and it's plenty cold enough for the ski areas to make snow, so I'm happy not to have to shovel out today. I sure feel bad for all the folks who were supposed to travel this weekend though. My daughter's due to fly here from Houston on Tuesday, I hope things will be moving smoothly again by then.

I'm off to church in a few minutes. More goodies to avoid there this morning I'm sure, but I'm finally getting used to saying, "No, thanks."

Enjoy your Sunday friends!

12-20-2009, 09:54 AM
Good morning :coffee2: I slept in and it was great! I might just do it all week.

Ruth - Something about making things for other people just causes problems. I make bread every week and even when I experiment it comes out great. Thursday I made bread for the party and the middle flopped down so it looked really funny. Luckily it still tasted good. Nice save with the cake and I bet it's still delicious.
Still have a dog with the runs? Hope that gets better soon.

Chelby - I'm so glad everything went well for Auston's party. Sounds like another busy day for you today.

Cottage - Wow, that's a lot of snow anywhere (and I lived outside of Buffalo for 2 years)! Have a safe trip and a fun afternoon :)

Twynn - My BF's granddaughter actually gave instructions when she was 2 - I want toys, no clothes Meme, just toys. :) Hope that cold bites the dust ASAP!

Heidi - Wow, I'm surprised it wasn't crazy there. I might have to brave it again one of these days. Keeping my fingers crossed for perfect cross country weather this week.

Well no snow here either and we are not complaining. We've got more than enough on the ground already and are in no hurry for more. It was Christmas Bird Count here but we were both under the weather and decided to just do our own neighborhood and skip the party. Not sure why it's been such a long week but we were exhausted with slightly sensitive tummys. Mediterranean Vegetable Stew and early bed was just the right way to spend the evening.

Today will be another at home day with chores (not much got done yesterday) to do. We have a few errands to run but will do that tomorrow when more people are at work :)

Somehow I ended up offering to make pumpkin cheesecake for dessert for our family dinner on Wed. I'm also making Butternut Squash lasagna and a breakfast casserole. Guess I'll be doing some cooking. That lasagna will be a new recipe for me, of course trying it the first time for a family dinner. Guess we all do it Twynn ;)

12-20-2009, 10:17 AM
Chelby, I'm glad Auston's party went well. My DD had to postpone my GD's party because of the snowstorm, but Carley was OK with that. Have fun on your shopping trip today!

Ruth, that was a good save on the cake! Bet no one will ever know! ;)

Twynn, I hope your cold is better and that you have fun at your Christmas party. Tell Matt I said "Hi"! How's he doing these days, anyway?

Heidi, too bad you missed the snow. Want some? I have more than enough and will share.

Cyndi, I can send some your way too so you won't feel slighted, OK? :D

Our party is cancelled for today, which is a good call. It probably wouldn't be a problem getting there, but getting back home in the dark could be dicey. Monica sent me a picture from her livingroom window, and the snow is halfway up her windows! We'll be talking about this blizzard for some time to come. :)

I made blackberry pancakes and induldged in real maple syrup from Ruth's sugarbrush for breakfast. Right now I have laundry going and Jake is out clearing off the cars. Dustin is going to come by with his snowplow after he's finished with his customers to get us cleared out, so our neighbor won't have to do it. We may run out for the papers and a quick stop at the grocery store after that, but it's a nice day to hunker down and watch old holiday movies all day. :)

12-20-2009, 10:29 AM
Cottage - You as so thoughtful. Thanks for the offer. Luckily we already have more than enough of our own.
Sounds like staying home is a good idea.

Speaking of - we just bought the Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol and will watch that later. I picked up some hot chocolate mix at the Co-op that 61% dark with a little orange sweetened with stevia and erythrytol. I think we will be trying that this afternoon :)

12-20-2009, 03:28 PM
Well, I think our grand total for snow is about the same as cottage's. It is a beautiful sunny and cold day here, perfect for playing in the snow. I took several walks through town yesterday during the storm with my camera, and again this morning and got some really pretty shots. In between, lots of cooking. I had the oven on from noon until 6 and it was full the whole time. But the cookies are done, and I got 7 cakes made. Hopefully I can get DD1 to come out and help with wrapping and house cleaning over the next few days, and we should be good to go for the big day. I've gotten my assignments for Christmas dinner - an appetizer and a vegetable. My hot crab dip was specifically requested, so I'll do that, and I took some of that Kale with Roasted Turnips over for pizza night last week and it was a big hit, so I'll probably make that again. Still have to figure out what we want for Christmas eve here.
So far, this has been quite the magical Christmas for us. We expected DH to be back at sea by now, so it's wonderful to have him around. Christmas snow storm, and we have had lots of opportunities to do good deeds as a family, which really makes us happy. It's funny how some years you can kill yourself planning the perfect Christmas and it never really turns out the way you want it to. This year, I've hardly given it a thought, just gone with the flow and done what I could get to, and find myself really enjoying the season!

Kierie, how was the mall yesterday? It's either quite brave or quite insane of you to do your shopping the Saturday before Christmas! Enjoy your days off!.
Cyndi, I love A Christmas Carol and I love Patrick Stewart. He's the only reason I was ever willing to watch any Star Treks. My favorite CCs are the Muppets and the old black and white British one, but I've never seen the one with PS. How was it? I've got that BS lasagna on my list to try.
Enjoy your cozy day, cottage.
Twynn, have fun at the party and I hope you say "hello" to Matt from the chicks!
Heidi, sounds like a fun shopping trip!
Chelby, glad the party went off so well! My poor SIL had her Christmas party for her side of the family planned for yesterday. They cleaned and cooked all week, but with the snow, they had to cancel. They live up the mountain a bit and have about 1/4 mile driveway to get plowed to get out. I don't expect they'll be out for another day or two.
Sophie, Lexxis, Pearl, Ruth, hello to all and anyone I've missed!

12-20-2009, 05:01 PM
Ruth, Cornbread dressing is absolutely a southern thing. I'd be glad to share the recipe, but it's absolutely porn.

Twynn, My sister and I got all the boys underwear last Christmas. You should have seen some bad acting boys. :D

Schmoodle, Kale and roasted turnips sounds yummy! How do you make it?

All you with snow... How wonderful! There has NEVER been a white Christmas in Alabama.

12-20-2009, 05:12 PM
Chelby, Laurie posted it here: It's my current favorite kale recipe.

12-20-2009, 05:41 PM
Glad to see that everyone is safe after the big snowfall and baking away. I guess we just have to learn to live with it.
Happy to say that I am feeling much better and went out today to get some necessities like milk and was very surprised that it wasn't as crowded as I thought it would be, lots of parking lots. All my baking is done and DS1 is making dessert for Christmas which involves lots of bourbon. The guys in the family love it.
Pork Roast for dinner and having my sons over.
I will have to try the kale with greens recipe and will have it all to myself because no one here likes kale.
Enjoy what is left of the weekend
take care

12-20-2009, 06:41 PM
I never got around to checking in yesterday, it was a wild day! But a nice one.

I never got to checking in today! Messiah was great, but we got home late last night and I actually slept in. By the time I got up it was into high gear.

I enjoyed reading everyones posts. Snow is the word! Amazing storm...I finally think I'm settled for the evening. See you all tomorrow as we head into our holiday week.

Best wishes!

12-21-2009, 12:07 AM
Hey Ladies Peeking in Late our cable internet and phone went down this afternoon
We got about 1 foot + of snow not bad I almost did the 1 woman luge down our driveway luckily DH caught me about 4 inches from the ground
Shopping was fine we were on a mission! I got in and out in under an hour... The mall didn't feel christmassy
today we went for a food porn breakfast at IHOP I had 4 forkfulls of Gingerbread pancakes and 2 scrambled eggs then we went to target which felt christmassy and a quick trip to the Grocery for cookie stuff
our tubes of cookie dough wouldn't take to the cutters
Luckily I had the food network magazine with the cookie pullout in it and we were SAVEd (hence my FB Status)
