Just interested to know what size people are wearing at different weights and heights.
I am 5'9 and weigh 13st now, and can comfortably wear pretty much all dresses and tops at size14, even buying the occasional 12 if requiring a slimmer fit. Have also just started buying 36B as new Bra size (ie am not a big girl up top)
Trousers with defined waistband, am just on the cusp of 14, ie not fitting in every shop, but 16 a bit big in all shops

By the way, I am talking in UK/Irish sizes here (Size 14 = Us size 10 and so on)

Just interested in this - and also if anyone has specific comments about different shop's sizing???...if anyone wants to post, please include your height

Thanks

I don't understand what all these X's mean in US Sizing - what actual size does say Large Correspond to, and if it is say US size 14, then is XL US 16 and so on??

TIARA
11-15-2009, 05:57 AM
x just stands for extra large lol is that what you were referring 2?

algebraashley
11-15-2009, 10:26 AM
it kinda varies but a large is like a us 10/12 and a XL is like a us 14/16 but it depends on the store

i thought a MEDIUM was a US size 8/10 ... small is 4/6.....
Ayway, its all just arbitrary anyways!! :)

i am 5'4, approx 137 pounds and i wear a size 4 in most pants/dresses....... usually a small in everything else, sometimes extra small, although sometimes when i buy shirts i have to buy mediums becuz i have a freakishly long torso!!!

I'm 5 foot 8, and just getting into size 18 trousers although it's tight. My size 20's are getting a bit too lose. Same with tops really.

I am small framed, pear shaped, 5'7" and weigh around 130 lbs. I wear a 34D bra (lots of loose skin in the old boobies) and small tops. In pants, I wear a US 6 or an US 8 depending on brand/vanity sizing.

I'm 5'5 and wear a UK 16 top and 18 bottom. And a 38E bra.

Dorothy Perkins make their clothes slightly bigger, so I always get a 16. :D

I'm 5'4" and 165lbs (11st11lb). I'm wearing mainly UK12s in tops and the couple of dresses I own. Most of my skirts are UK14s/US10s but several of these are getting quite large on the waist. Trousers/jeans I always need a 14 to accommodate the still ample rear, although in many I have the back gape at the waist. Bra size I'm a 34DD but as I'm wearing these on the tightest hook, may be more like a 32E.

Its difficult for me to comment about specific shop sizing as I'm still finding this our for myself having been out of the plus-sized shops only recently. M&S 14s seem to be quite a generous fit, I've stopped shopping at Next as they always seem small across the bust but large through the waist and narrow at the hips. Best fitting for me atm is (when I can afford it) size 12 at Hobbs and Laura Ashley. Boden I'm still in a 14 but their clothes are well proportioned for me.

Monsoon can be pretty inconsistent in their sizing in general, I find, but yes, I run about a 16 there, and an 18 pretty much everywhere else. Oh, except for Dorothy Perkins. They really seem to run big, particularly in jeans.

I'm 5'6 & I wear size 24 top and bottom at the moment. Normally when I'm lighter I tend to be a size smaller on the bottom, & that's usually where I start to lose it first.

I suppose it might make sense that Dorothy Perkins clothes are slightly larger, as they're the same group as Evans which always come up big. My friend and I had an aim to be able to wear jeans from the Gap last time I lost a large amount - only to find that when I was in an 18 anywhere else I was nowhere near there!

Ugh, it's like getting TopShop jeans. I remember back when I was a 14, could I even get jeans to even get up my thighs? Noooo....

Ellie R
11-17-2009, 05:05 AM
Yeah, I haven't shopped in Monsoon in a while, as I used to buy stuff there all the time when i was bigger, so it kind of reminds me too much.

But I used to buy size 22 there when I was probably more size 26, and they fitted, so yes i suspect they are a little generous.

Do you guys think French connection sizes are a wee bit smaller than most??

Do you guys think French connection sizes are a wee bit smaller than most??

I have a pair of French Connection jeans in a 14 which fit me fine without any gapping at the waist. If this is average for French Connection sizing then I would say that their 14s may be a little smaller on the waist but the same on the hips as the average size 14. I've just checked their size guide on line and no wonder the jeans fit so well my measurements are exactly their size 14: 37.5", 31", 41". I'll have to shop there more often.

i'm 5ft 7 and i'm between a 20 and 18. 20s too big but 18s are too small. i find dorothy perkins wonderful for sizing and their clothes are good quality. i hate evans. everything i try on makes me look like i have no shape, or am 7 months pregnant. next fit me perfectly on top, but like another poster mentioned, they are too tight on the hips in trousers.

I'm 5' 6" and heading for a size 16 but still (just) was fitting into my size 14s, when I realised last week enough was enough. I find I can rarely find jeans that fit me cos whatever size I am, (even a small 12) my thighs are too massive, and I always have a 10" differential between waist and hips - so if it goes over my bum, it gapes at the waist.

I find Monsoon and Tescos seem to be vanity sized.

I had lost all the weight the first year I came here - I went from a 22 to a size 12, in about a year but just as I hit size 12 my dad died, and voila! Comfort eating. Despite having regained nearly all the weight (maybe 2 st out of the 3 st I had lost), I only went up one dress size. Go figure!

Its very depressing, the shops with the nicest clothes seem to have the smallest fitting sizes! im usually a big UK12/small UK14 and I'm 5'10", but if i go into topshop or miss selfridge or (god forbid!) american apparel i can hardly squeeze into the 14s! Ive heard a conspiracy theory that shops do this on purpose, but i don't see how they could benefit from it because since Topshop makes me feel bad about myself, I don't shop there anymore! Penneys (Primark) all the way baby!

I'm 5'7", 11st 11lb and a UK size 12 top and 14 bottoms. I am hourglass shaped and have a small waist and massive hips and it can be very difficult getting jeans that fit nicely on the hips and thighs but that don't have a huge gap on the waist!! I am sure I could try on 50 pairs and be lucky to get one decent one!

I'm 5ft5, currently 267lbs. I'm 20/22 on top and 26 at the bottom. Generally have to say Evans items come up big on me. If only I could zone my diet to lose more on my hips lol

Yes, hoorah for Dorothy Perkins! I've been a size 16 for most of my adult life, briefly hit 18 (before joining WW) and 14 (four months after WW) now back up to 16 and hoping to be a 14 by my wedding next August. Eeek!

Still same height :D but now 14stone and fit in enough 18's to say I'm a a size 18 :) Some still don't fit but that's duer to being pear shaped, over hanging tummy from 3 c-sections, etc. but size 20's definatly too big now.

It's strange, there was only a few pounds between a 24 and a 20 for me yet 2 stones between a 20 and 18.

Hey Rainbow...I think that's definitely due to bug sizing being totally arbitrary...once you get down to a 16 is fairly standard in most shopws with a few exceptions...but the biggie sizes are just like ...whatever

I'm just over 5'6" and bang on 11st and I'm a UK12 except for in Asda, yesterday I fitted into a UK10 pair of jeans in Asda, if they hadn't been the most horribly cut item that ever graced my body, I'd have bought 'em just for the label.

I still can't get the zip up on regular fit knee boots though...

I'm 5'10 and currently 14 st 1/197lb. I've been size 18 in most clothes for about the last 9lb. I started wearing some 18s at 14st 11 but not in every item of clothing I had, now everything in that size fits. I also think Dorothy Perkins (and many stores in the same group, such as the Debenhams sub-brands) tend to come up bigger.

I am 5'2", hovering at 190, and wear a 12 or 14 on the bottom and anything between a medium and a "holy crap my boobs are never gonna fit in that!" on the top. That is to say, anywhere between a medium and a extra-large, depending on cut. I am usually in a large on the top. These are all USian sizes and measurements.

I tried on a 14 in Dillards recently and was annoyed to find it far too large, as it was on a delicious sale. No sense buying it on sale if you'll have to ruin it taking it in. How I can make being smaller than I expected a problem, I don't know, but it's a talent. Heh.

Scuse the bio, but I am hoping to give 2010 a bloody good skinnying and am just looking back, as a sort of kickstart!

I am 5'5"

At 20 I was 14st ill for a long time with a run of viral infections - size 24!
At 24 I got married - 13st - size 18
Went back to 14st - size 22
At 32 went to Uni, 14st size 22
At 36 finished Uni, 14st size 16 - I worked as an aerobics instructor having qualified in my 2nd year!
Stayed at 14st, size 16 until ill health hit again....
Now 15st 7lb - size 18

I am hoping that this year, with my health a little more stable I can get myself back into the gym, perhaps play netball and lose size and that damned extra stone and a bit!

So I aim to be size 16 and fitter... whatever my weight.... by my 45th birthday - or when the new college year starts in September.

So I am off the find a tracker that is based on size/inches rather than pounds!

Gosh, how do you do it? You mus tbe really muscular.

I am 5.3 1/2" and started off at 11st7lb. At that time, my size 14 wardrobe was getting too tight, and I panicked.

I am now 9st9lb and a size 12. Two of my trousers are getting too lose and when I hit the sales today, I`ll try some 10s and see how they fit.

Bra is 34E now, from 36E.

I'm 5'3, currently weigh 158.8lbs and wear UK size 12-14. I've been a size 12 for the last few years and it doesn't seem to matter whether I am just under 150 or just above 160, I still wear 12, though it can occasionlly be quite tight depending on where the clothing is from. I find smart trousers can be extremely tight at some places whereas jeans and skirts easily fit me. I'm hoping to get down to a size 8 this year.

Im 5'5". I normally wear (at 145-150) size 10 tops and jackets and size 12 skirts/jeans. However, in a tight knit jumper I just give up, a 12 looks good on my body but my upper arms-forget it. I've (cough) put on 11lbs since October so am currently squeezing into my 12s but I'm a definite 14 now. No new clothes for me then.

If you are in the UK you could try Long Tall Sally since they design for longer bodies so will have a rise that's in proportion. The rise still varies depending on the style though.

I'm still in an 18 at 190lbs - tried on a 16 the other day and it definitely wasn't a good look. Not a brand I've worn for years so I have no idea whether they vanity-size or come up smaller. After about 6 more lbs I'll try again.

I'm 5'5, 218lbs, 38GG , and my size varies from shop to shop. I tried on a couple of dresses in Miss Selfridge the other day and I finally fit into their size 16s - which put a massive smile on my face. However I could hardly get their jeans up my thighs..when I did they were really tight and didn't do up :( But I'm hoping that once I'm just under 15st that they'll fit!

Otherwise I'm generally between a 16-18, but leaning much more to the 16 side.

Tried on size 16 shirts at Dorothy Perkins and H&M yesterday, and nope, too small. Strangely enough size 16 Peacocks jeans fit perfectly, and size 16 M&S skirts fit fine too, maybe it's because I'm a top heavy apple shape.

When I was at H&M the other day, I tried on a dress that fit me (tightly) as a UK size 10. I'm sure my bottoms are bigger than that, because I'm more pear-shaped, so UK size 12 for the legs (at least).

In American/Canadian sizes, I wear size 8 pants, but they're getting looser. And a size 4-6 top.

Currently size 12 downstairs, size 10 upstairs (smallest since I was a kid!). Whilst my top size is still getting smaller, I've been stuck in size 12 jeans etc... for a while now, and pretty sure that it's down to the excess skin on my lower belly.

Thanks

Thought should do a little update now...
Am still 5"9!
I now weigh 11st 10lbs
Am pretty much a size 12 everywhere, with the very odd exception of having to try a 14 - in say a tight fitting dress...
in some jeans I would be a 28 or 29" waist, but often then they are too tight on thighs

At my highest weight of 210 I was an 18 on top and bottoms, but I pretty much lived in stretch jeans and cheap, plain tops from Primark, so I'm sure something tailored would have had to be bigger. I had a pair of size 16 trousers from BHS that I pretty much exclusively wore to work, alongside a size 18 from new look that were just way too big.

Now I'm hovering around 190 and I can wear a size 16 in jeans with or without stretch, although without stretch are still tight around the tops of the thighs (I have chunky legs and a big round bum) and I have to invent new ways to cover up the muffin top, but hopefully not for long!

I also had a breakthrough in Primark yesterday, where I fit into a size 14 jacket! My shoulders are much smaller now, but my belly is still pretty big so doing up the button is a no no, but again, not for long :D I'm excited to fit into a 14 properly again in bottoms especially!

Like most of you it depends on the shop with me.

I'm 5'4, 168lbs and very pear shaped! Got 34D boobs and am sometimes a 14 on top and bottom but motly a 14 on top and 16 on bottom. I can sometimes fit into size 12 dresses as I have a weirdly small waist and shoulders in comparison to my hips and thighs.

I'm:
16-18 in Primark
12 in Ethel Austin

So, what size am I ??? :D

I wear a 38DD bra I started off a 40DD/E depending where I shopped

I'm 5'7" and about 15 stone (208lb). Last year I was lighter so lots of my clothes don't fit any more :( They're pretty much all UK 16s, with a few 18s thrown in. At the moment the 18s fit, although some items are too big, while most of the 16s are too tight. However, I have a pair of size 16 Primark jeans which are a touch too big if anything, and which I wear all the time.

Here in Spain, the biggest sizes you can usually find are a 42 or a 44 (UK 14 or 16 supposedly) and they come up incredibly small. Last year I was 13 stone and on the smaller side of a UK size 16, but I couldn't even get a pair of size 44 jeans over my knees here!

Im currently a size 16/18 at 5'4 and am sick of hovering in the 15 stone range! fit comfortably in size 18 jeans, somtimes 16 if they're from dorethy perkins or an expensive brand...im a 36F on top and struggle to fit into a size 16 unless stretchy :(

I'm a size 12 in jeans now. I was a size 14 at Christmas. Looking to get down to a 10 possibly, although I have naturally wide hips, so would be happy with a comfortably fitting 12.

Size 10/12 in tops, because of hips and bust. :)

I've also dropped from a 34DD to a 32D/C :( which I'm a bit upset about, but I'd rather have well proportioned boobs than fat boobs I suppose.

Long time no see EllieR, hope you're finding maintenance okay!

Today's weight is 160 and I tend to maintain between 159-162. I'm 5ft 10 and take a UK 14 in most clothes and 36E bra but I have some loose skin there, more's the pity.

i'm 5 ft 10 and 224lbs. I wear UK 12/14 on top and a largish 16 on the bottom. Bra size i'm a 36E but the 36F is more comfortable. My sizes don't really depend on the shop though, it's more the style of clothes that make my size change a lot.

I'm 5 ft 7 and weigh just short of 16 stone (eek), and am a size 20/22.

Tbh I'm not too bothered about being thin, I just don't feel healthy in myself and would like to be able to do more walking and play with my boyfriends little girl more. Also, I was most confident when I got with my boyfriend. When I was a size 12, and think I would like to go back to that size.

At just under 5'4" and 152, I wear a 12 bottoms comfortably and a 10 dress snuggly, but still publicly acceptable :) Tops are about the same, thanks to 36C sized girls...

I have been trained to say trousers over here and it's now funny when I hear people talk about their "pants" size after getting called out on it so many times :) I'm a 5 year old I guess...

I used to be a US size 22 in "relaxed fit" pants. Now I am a size 2/4 depending on Brand. Medium everything else. Don't know what that translates to in UK sizes as its been 25 years since I lived there and bought any clothes there.

Depending on where I shop, it can be anywhere between a 16 and a 20.

Gotta love that confusion.

But at least I can always count on M&S for good bra's that don't keep changing when it comes to the blimmin sizing.

I am an 18 in stretch pants - otherwise a 20. I am between an 18 and a 20 up top too. I tend to prefer a bigger top in the summer anyway.
