now i've been doing about this for a while and today i found a BMI guide with extra catagories. it used to be over weight and then obese. then they added morbidly obese.

well this has obese over 30, severly obese over 35 morbidly obese over 40 and SUPER obese over 50!

super obese what kinda rubbish is this whats next mega obese at 55 giga obese at 60 or how about galactic obese at 70?

being in the obese or morbidly obese catagory is bad enough to be labled with let alone Super obese! don't the body fascists in the medical profession have nothing better to do with their time that think of ways of humiliating fat people!

Super obese? Yeah I think I like the sound of morbidly obese much better. Morbid obese...ooh that means I could die. That's scary. Need to get to work on that.
Super obese? What am I, a sideshow freak?

I don't worry about stuff like this. It's medical terminology and those terms cut to the chase without worrying about people's feelings. The fact that you found out about this terminology doesn't change who you are or lower your value as a person, so why let it bother you?

Galactic obese  They should of got you to name the catagories ;)

I always hated the names they came out with two, though now I'm just plain obese (just) it's not so bad :D So nice to not be so fat I'm about to drop dead any second anymore. I actually think it's better with the extra catagories - they are just badly named but what do you expect from the health profession.

You think Morbidly obese would be as bad as it gets...

I think it's a valid category. I know when I started this journey, with a BMI of over 56--super morbidly obese--I was significantly less healthy (in pain, tired, random other problems) than when I dieted down to just morbidly obese.

I've also seen it as Class I, then Class II obesity, I think for over 30 and over 35.

I think it's valid. Your last line made me laugh, though ... ha, humiliating fat people. Well, it probably will be used as a barometer for who pays more/less for things like health care. It already is, in some places.

I don't mind the new labels. Most of why I don't mind them is that they seem to have possibly scared some sense into a friend of mine who falls into the super morbidly obese category. He's all freaked out because they "had to make new categories" for "people like him". If it scares him into doing something about it then I'm all for it.

Just another tool to use to deny people health insurance coverage, IMHO.

People are getting bigger and bigger and bigger and that is becoming the "norm". These categories probably didn't exist before because they weren't needed. Now that there are more and more people in these weight zones, there is a need to categorize for a number of reasons: population studies, heath risk studies, and to have a common language for medical professions. A sad reflection on our society at the moment, when there are enough people to warrant a category of this type...

I am a severely obese personal that can walk/jog 5 miles in an hour.... mmmmkay ;) lol! I think these things are so much bogusness that I can't even explain it.

This is the truth. The categories develop as a way of studying what treatments work best for which people.

At least in part, the development of these categories is a sign that medicine is *not* ignoring the very obese, or even the minimally obese, anymore.

i guess socialised health care isn't as bad as Regan made out then. i actually believe the additional catagories were formed in the uk where everyone is covered by national healthcare so i don't think it was designed for that.

it is worrying however that they feel that there is enough people now in these ranges that its worth actually naming these catagories.

If anything, I've been frustrated that most of the online calculators and charts stop labeling at 30. I like being able to see where I'm at so I can see where I'm going and what it'll take to get there. ;)

I started out at "super morbidly obese," or just "super obese" at 54.7, depending on what chart you look at. I've worked down through "morbidly obese" and have just reached being "severely obese."

I didn't realize I even qualified as "super morbidly obese" until I was well out of the category. Rather scary. :o

It seems with 'morbidly obese' that we are already dead..lol..oh, the irony..sometimes it feels like I am that way with the opposite sex..I've been on a few dating websites and really not given the the time of day..when I was 140 a couple of years ago..thank you WW and Curves..but didn't do the maintain thing..I had many dates..not a one since I gained the weight back..
