I just wondered what the difference is between these two meds. A GP mentioned both to me, and so I thought I should find out about both of them before I go to the Endocrinologist.
Thanks,

PCOS/Insulin Resistance Support - Glucophage vs AvandiaView Full Version : Glucophage vs Avandia ScoobyD 07-26-2002, 03:36 AM I just wondered what the difference is between these two meds. A GP mentioned both to me, and so I thought I should find out about both of them before I go to the Endocrinologist. Thanks, Veggie Jenniffer 07-26-2002, 10:32 AM To be honest, I don't think I've ever heard of Avandia before your post. Maybe on a commercial or two though. I tried to look up some infor on Yahoo about it, and it pretty much looks the same as Gluc/Metformin. Does the same thing. But I did see it mentioned that it may be prescribed with Metformin. Not sure why, not too much info on that. But as far as I can tell, they are prescribed for the same reason, and both are effective. Guess it's just another alternate for those who have trouble who have trouble with the side effects of one or the other. Or like any medicine, some ppl react differently to each med, wether it's the same thing or not. Hope this helped, if I can find anything else, I will post it. Jennifer 3FC 07-29-2002, 01:13 AM I think they both have the same goal, to lower insulin resistance, but I have heard that Avandia can cause some weight gain, partly due to water retention side effects. I don't think a substantial amount, but still some sort of gain. If you are wanting to take the medication primarily to lose weight, be sure and tell your Endo that. Avandia also I THINK is in the same family of drugs as Rezulin, which was taken off the market a while back. Btw, I think Avandia is probably easier on the stomach than Glucophage. Glucophage XR is supposed to be milder on the stomach than regular Glucophage. vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
