40-Somethings - Frustrated! Don't trust the calorie count on Fitday

I noticed it was saying that there was about 2.7 g of fat in a cup of fresh, cooked broccoli so I knew that was wrong. Checked on another calorie counter site and it sits at about 0.2 calories or something. The calorie count was way off too of course on Fitday. Now what do I do? I was pretty happy with the site at first as it is so visual and I like that.

Any idea what I can do? I tried LiveStrong but found it cumbersome.

Thanks!

Tracy

I always use the "raw" listing and then add what I used to cook with.

My biggest issue is that FitDay will have way too many options that just don't fit. Often I just find it easier to "add" a food.

I use the raw options too, for almost all my vegetables because I don't add salt or fat. If I do add anything, I add it into fitday as well.

On FitDay, for most things, they have them listed as "cooked," "cooked without added fat," and "cooked with added fat." I think the plain "cooked" version is for when you have no idea, so it gives a worst case scenario (in other words, with fat).

I was already surfing the internet looking for diet software reviews as I really want this to work for me not against.

I'll use the raw category -

many thanks,

Tracy, I've been very happy with Nutritiondata.com. There's more information than what anybody really needs, but the breakdown of portion sizes is mostly very good, and I have not picked up on many inaccuracies. Most of the time, seriously, I use an old paperback calorie counter. Now that I'm almost a year into this, I have a page in my planner where I keep the counts on things I eat often - like the size variations to apples ( Nutritiondata lists calories for apples by diameter, and bananas by length!) and nuts, and "safe" fast food choices. Someday I'll have to spill the beans on myself about what happened when I got caught measuring the length of a banana at work ...

You will have to spill the beans on that one! Too funny!

I remember having a calorie counter book years ago - think it was one of those mini-versions they have at the grocery store check-outs. I could have something like that with me - that way I can take it with me and put it in my purse. Thanks for the suggestion..

I used to love fitday but did have to add most of my foods because they didn't have what I was looking for. Currently I use sparkpeople.com

I had moved to Fitday because I liked the visual pie chart of % of carbs, protein and fat. My carbs really have to stay low for weight loss. However, I'm back to Sparkpeople.com again because I find their system works better for me, even though they are both basically quite similar.

As for mixed foods, I also use the raw version of fruits and vegetables and add whatever I've cooked it in.

I used to swear by fitday but was frustrated with it because they had sooo many choices but none of them were right for me. Based on the recs from this board, I switched to TDP which is now LS. If I get too many different responses and I don't have the actual caloric info right off the product, I usually google or hit a few different places and get a general idea of what the caloric intake might be. I much prefer LS now that I am used to it. I also rely heavily on the info on the package or the manufacturers website.

I use Mikibo.com to track my food and exercise. Been using it for quite a while and really like all of its features. Free to join and it keeps all of your info.

I like Fitday, because I'm used to it, but I often add foods rather than use their choices...

I started on fitday but have since moved to livestrong.com

I like their pie chart breakdown of carbs/fat/protein. Most of what I eat is already in their database too.
