Looking Good, Feeling Great - So, what *can't* you alter...?

I have 2 pairs of jeans (size 14) that fit wonderfully a few pounds ago.
Now that I'm a size 12, they are too baggy and cannot be worn without a belt. The problem is, I LOVE these jeans. They are the perfect length for me and they (when they fit) hit all of my curves very nicely.
Anyway, can jeans be altered? Is it even worth it?

I got attached to several pairs of jeans that I thought were made for me. Move on from those jeans, girl! The closer you get to your weight loss goal, you are going to find a ton of stuff that accentuates your curves and that fit even better. I only get jeans altered for length and it costs me about eight bucks. I think if you had to get them altered around the waist you would probably be spending a lot more and they may look funny or not fit you in the right way ever again.
Luckily, the really expensive jeans I bought I took back while in my weight loss phase. I am so glad I did too, because they would have only fit me for about a month.

LOL! I didn't expect you to say that.
I am a girl that LOVES to shop so I'm always willing to buy new things. But, but...these jeans are perfect! :D
OK, I will see what else is out there.
Thanks for the insight!
BTW, I love your profile picture!!

What brand of jeans? Do you remember where you got them? If so go back and try on a size smaller. Make sure your try them on though cause your shape is probaly changing as you lose weight.

Well, I found both pair on the discount rack at Old Navy. Which is weird because I don't usually love their jeans. For some reason, these aren't the cheap quality that you usually find at ON. I have gone back and can't find my perfect jeans. I will keep looking, though!

Jeans really can't be effectively altered. The pockets/butt never survives the alterations. Time to give them away and move on. :)

Hey, you should take my jeans! I am in Northern Virginia and we're the same height. LOL!

I had the same issue, I found my favorite old jeans in my new size on Ebay. I had a 16W and now I have the 12 (notice no W :) ), so you may try looking there!

I had the same question as you so I took my favorite pair of jeans that's a size or 2 too big for me to get them altered just yesterday. I get them back on Thursday so I'll let you know how it works out.
I don't know what kind of shape you have but I am an hourglass. My tailor said that since I have a small waist to be careful not to tailor pants in the back otherwise the pockets will look weird. She's taking the jeans in from the side. It looked really good pinned so I'm excited to get them back later this week.

Oh that's good info! Thanks! I can't wait to hear about how you like them.
I believe I'm an hourglass.

So I got my jeans altered the other day and they fit great! I strongly suggest for those girls with a small waist and massive hips get them taken in from the sides rather than the back like it's usually done. Yey for my favorite jeans!

There is a pair of jeans I found a while back that I loved. When they became too big I checked EBAY and found a pair one size down for like 3 dollars! Unless your jeans are some huge, expensive brand I would just invest in a new pair.
I have found a couple of brands that fit me very well without being altered--Gap, Long and Lean and also Paris Blues Jr. brand. I also like Charlotte Russe. Luckily, all of these brands are affordable.

Although it is expensive I sure am enjoying buying new clothes. It sure is hard find those *perfect* pair of jeans though. I just sold my old favorites (size 18W) at my yard sale to a sweet girl for $1.50 firm! Last night I wore new favorites Nine West Size 16 (no W!) to the movies last night and it felt GREAT!

I will buy new clothes when I've lost enough weight. So far I've lost 36lbs but only went from a size 16 to a size 14.... I ain't buyin no size 14 it's just too depressing. Until I can fit at least into a size 10-12 I will make do with what I have and just alter them.

Why is it depressing to buy size 14s? I went from an 18 (even though I had 22s in my closet) to a 12/10. When I hit 14s I was so happy! I couldn't even remember being a 14...ever. :P

No, size 14 isn't depressing in itself. It's the fact that I lost 36 pounds and only dropped one dress size, that's what I meant. I hear that the truth of it is that when you're thinner (like size 8 or 6) that even losing 5 pounds can put you into a lower size. But someone like me only sees one sized dropped in 36lbs! Isn't that depressing?

Alteration charges are very high, I recently had the sleeves altered on a jacket the, charge for alteration was as much as the jacket cost in the first place. I found when I was losing the best place to buy jeans was Goodwill,Salvation Army or Savers. I have gotten some really great jeans at these places and really cheap.

Oh heck yeah!!! Actually, you sound like me. I dropped 30 pounds and only went from an 18 to a 16. I stumbled upon 14s by accident: I was buying "inspiration" pants and they slid right up my hips (I thought they were going to be tight). So, yes, I understand fully! I say, though, keep shopping around for 12s...you might just surprise yourself!
