Bobbi,

Is that soup the old cabbage soup diet soup? I LOVE that and make it fairly often too. Not because it's low calorie (although it is) but because it's so good!!!

Good morning from VERY snowy Denver! It's really coming down... All is well. I'm calm :)... I read somewhere that a tad of lemon juice in the water is good, and it's refreshing! I'm a huge water drinker in summer, not so much in winter, but I'm working on it... and on lessening the sodium... and on calming down. And on calming down... Happy day! Stay warm/dry/cool.... whatever works!

Bobbi ~ is your recipe for the sweet and sour cabbage soup on here? If not, could you post it? It sounds good.

Thanks

Good afternoon ladies. I hope you don' mind if I join in.

I'm trying to lose at least 40 lbs. I have been doing low carb for awhile but have now switched to just counting calories.

Have a great day.

Welcome, Lindyloo. You may certainly join in. Come and chat as much as you want. And welcome to 3FC. I see this was your first post and may I say you have picked a great thread to join in. I'm a calorie counter, too.

I'm tired tonight. I was going to do a little extra workout but I'm not up to it tonight. I think I'll surprise DH and crawl into bed early tonight.

I am going shopping tomorrow. I was going to look for a warm hoodie to wear under my jacket when I'm walking but I found one at the church free clothing store today. I was there helping today going through a rack of clothing helping someone look for a dress when lo and behold there was a warm hoodie in my size. It's a 12 but it's a large 12 so it's actually lose on me. It's getting cold enough for a winter coat (it was snowing today when I was walking) but I want to keep wearing my wind and water proof jacket for as long as I can and the heavier hoodie was just the thing to prolong the wearing. I wore it home and I felt much warmer.

My DIL's grandmother died today. She had been suffering with Alzheimer's Disease and didn't know DIL. She knew her daughters but the grandchildren were strangers to her. She was well enough to attend the wedding this summer. Now both grandmothers are gone. Mom died in August and now DIL's grandmother today. Our generation is becoming the matriarchs and patriarchs of our families.

Well, on that note I'll close and wish you all a great evening. Catch you all later.

Lindyloo.... Welcome! I'm fairly new, too, and I can tell you great certainty that this is a fine group to join. They're still speaking to me, and I drove them crazy with "stupid" questions... and things that I couldn't figure out... and continued/continuing whining and moaning. They're all great! Speaking of whining, I shoveled, and I'm on my second Aleve. The snow is really coming down, very wet! Isabella, I'm so sorry about your DIL's grandmother... such a horrible disease!

Health update -

Bad news - yes, it is lymphoma - something called cutaneous t cell lymphoma (CTCL).

Good news - the head of the dermatology practice that I go to at Fox Chase Cancer Center is a specialist in this type of lymphoma + my particular version of CTCL is typically responsive to treatment and generally takes a long time to move out of the skin and into the lymph system.

I am fine - my DD is a little crazed. Tough on only-children.

On the postitive side, I'm expecting good Christmas presents this year :D

Lynn, sorry to hear about your diagnosis---BUT I LOVE THE ATTITUDE and that is more than half the battle!! Keep us updated and lots of prayers headed your way,

Welcome LindyLoo and Judy Lynn!! You're going to love it here! You can't find a better group of people for support and in general just fantastic listening ears!!

This is a question for all the "original" Golden Girls---do you remember when we had the address book for those who wanted to participate in it? The last time I tried to open it it wouldn't open at all. Is there a chance that we might be able to do that again? I know if I could still open it it would need to be updated anyway. What do you think?

Everyone have a good night. Stay warm if you are in the cold, snow!! I really don't miss it.....

Well, Lynn, "responsive to treatment" is the important thing - that and the Christmas presents, of course! You know we're all pulling for you, kid....just one more battle for you to win, right?
Bobbi, my mother was a nurse, and back to work herself when I was little - and yes, you're absolutely right on the money! There was never a night when my clothes weren't neatly laid out and ready for the next morning. I never thought about the origins of this habit of mine, but of COURSE I've been doing it ever since I was a child! I never thought anybody ever did it any differently! How interesting that you picked up on that! Oh, and add me, please, to the list of folks who'd like to take a look at your cabbage soup recipe, please. :)
Freda, wherefore art thou? I hope being back to work isn't keeping you away! I miss you!:^:
Isabella, you are putting me to shame with your daily walks out in that cold air. I WILL do better, darn it! (Nice job finding that hoodie! Nobody likes a bargain better than yours truly! I am the original never-pay-full-price-for-anything gal)
Omigawd, Donna! All that snow! It's enough to make me choke on my morning coffee here! We had rain all day yesterday, and because my organization is building a new community center in Boston and "going green" with it, a few of my colleagues and I toured the "Artists for Humanity" building, which is a platinum level green building, and we climbed up onto the roof to see how their solar panels were installed - I was up there looking like a wild woman with my hair blowing all over the place, rain running all down my face...yes, I am a crazy woman. (Even I am amazed at some of the foolishness I get myself into). Anyway, we had that one weird snow blizzard that didn't stick to anything, and nothing since, for which I am extremely grateful.
Incidentally, if any of you happen to be noodling around on the computer and would like to see something interesting, google Artists for Humanity and check out their website, watch some of their student-produced videos and such. It's an amazing place!
Gayle, I wouldn't mind being in Houston right about now... :)
Hi Rosey, hi Karen! Welcome Judy Lynn and Lindy Loo!
Oh! We had Thai shrimp for supper last night, served over Miracle noodles. SO yummy, and about 450 calories. Can't beat that, huh?
Have a great day, y'all!!!

Hi evereyone,

Just joined the ranks of "losing" a really long post!!!

The weather here is just lovely. The colors are the best I've seen in a long time, due to the weather perhaps? I just hope it continues untill after Halloween. I hate seeing the little ones with coats over their costumes.

Lynn, so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. But Lymphoma is very treatable and you have LOTS of prayers coming your way. I totally believe they make a difference.

LindyLoo, Welcome. Come often. You get lots of support here. And it does make a difference.

Donna, No such thing as a "silly" question. We all had to find out the answers somwhere.

Karen, I don't remember the address book, but I think it's a great idea for the ones that would like to participate. Count me in!

Zo, I'm right here, i'm not going anywhere. I learned the hard way that I can't do it alone, I need the support. Didn't come around for awhile and gained back a bunch of weight. Which is finally gone, that goodness. I won't make that mistake again. I may be crazy, but i'm not dumb!!

Isabella, I saw one of those hoodies on QVC. I need one for the kids games. I used to worry about one messing up my hair. Now i'm more concerned about keeping warm!

Make it a good day,
freda

Good Morning Girls, it's raining cats and dogs here. Unfortunate for the farmers, we're surrounded by unpicked corn fields.
Karen...I printed out that list of all our addresses, I just dug it out and see part of it is missing. I have only 11 on the remaining list, Lynn Davis, Cat (FemmeCreole), Gramm Paula, Phyllis Herrmann, Woodlily, Zoe Riley, Lynard, you Karen 31 with Florissant, Co address, Moxie, Linda Smith and Piano51. My email address is wrong on it too.
Freda...been there, done that!
Just joined the ranks of "losing" a really long post!!!

:welcome: Welcome Lindy and Judy Lynn. We love having new posts.
Zoe...I never pay full price for anything either, I get a little high from purchasing clothes on the clearance racks. As far as the soup recipe, I did post it but I think the recipe went down the big black hole that gobbled up all the post when 3 Fat Chicks crashed. I'll post it again, I have a funeral this morning to go to.
Lynn...:hug:I'm so sorry to hear of your medical problems, my prayers are with you. Karen was right about your positive attitude, keep it up! Bad news - yes, it is lymphoma - something called cutaneous t cell lymphoma (CTCL).

Hi to all I missed, gotta go get ready for the funeral.

Thanks all for the warm welcome.
Just a skiff of snow last night and it's a little chilly here but suppose to warm up by the weekend. I sure hope so, I hate to see the little kids freeze when the're out halloween night.

Lynn - sorry to hear about the diagnosis. You have a great attitude though anad that will help you get through this.

I have to make a quick trip to Costco today and that's about it, although I may try to go to the gym.

Going to try and check out the rest of this site.

Have a great day everyone.

I (well, WE) are BURIED in snow! I thought I was sore yesterday, but today is going to be worse from a total repeat of the shoveling experience. I am not happy at this very moment! It's a lot easier to throw that stuff around when I'm not carrying a few extra pounds... even this little bit makes a huge difference in stamina! Last year we didn't get ANY snow until about March, so we're making up for it! It's supposed to be 61 here by Tuesday... ridiculous! Doesn't a bowl of chili sound good?

retiredone
10-29-2009, 05:25 PM
Yes, chili does sound good. As a matter of fact I'm making a huge potful this weekend for a church lunch. Jess, did I tell you, I love your avatar? It gives me a smile every time I look at it.

Lindyloo, we're getting the same kind of snow. Nothing is staying (yet).

Freda, my hoodie kept me warm this morning. Make sure you get a heavy one for this time of the year.

Zoe, I'm the same way for a great bargain. I picked up 2 exercise tank tops and 1 cap-sleeved golf shirt today at Walmart for $5 each. They'll be great for next summer. I rarely buy anything full price, unless it's shoes. I have to have good shoes (delicate feet, you know).

Karen31, Judy Lynn, Rosey and Bobbi  Hope you all had a good day.

Lynn, you are in my prayers for a speedy recovery. And I'll say a prayer for your DD as well.

I was shopping today. I bought a few groceries and the tops I mentioned earlier. But the one thing I really wanted to find was something waterproof for my feet. When I got home from my walk in the rain my feet were wet and cold. I'm fine for clothing and stayed nice and warm and dry except for my feet. I did try on a great pair of boots but they wouldn't be suitable for a 5k walk as my feet need to be firmly planted in the boot. Every time I took a step my heel rubbed again the back of the boot. Now, that wouldn't be bad if I was just wearing them around the yard or shoveling but not for walking. What I want is something like a sneaker but waterproof or at least water resistant. The boots were $99 which also was somewhat discouraging. But I would have had them if they had been suitable as I'd never have wet feet in them. They also had slip proof soles. I'm going to look on the Sears website to see what they have. I'm a bit limited in my shopping where I live and there's only 1 more store to look in and I don't think they'll have anything. Maybe the Goodwill Center holds the key. :D. I'll be there next week volunteering but I'm guessing the picks will be even slimmer.

Have a great evening everyone.

Hi Karen,

I have the original one, but has some folks who do not want their info shared & some folks who are no longer part of our board.

I would be happy to make a new one for anyone who wants it.

Last time, we had name (first & last), address, phone number, email address, and birthday.

Thinking about our new challenge & I have an idea I'd like to share.

Research says that to make a new habit, you need to do the activity for 90 days. Our current challenge ends on 11/14. What if our next challenge goes from 11/15 to 2/15? The challenge is to form a new habit. Everyone could pick the new habit they want to acquire. 1 point/day for posting progress + 1 point/day for doing the activity.

What do you think?

Lynn

Lynn, I would like to get a copy of the address book. But maybe wait a bit and see if there are any more here that would be interested. I know I got a PM from Freda and she would like to be included in an address book. Maybe put it out there for a couple weeks and see if there are any takers. I will PM you with my new address. Thanks, Karen

How come it takes about 2 seconds to form a bad habit and 90 days to form a good habit? This is from personal experience.

Question I received - I'm interested in the challenge, but please go over the "how to's" for us newbies?

Answer -

On the 1st of November, I will post a message in the Main Forum titled, "Winter 09-10 Challenge." I will ask our moderator to move it up to the "Sticky" area - above where our thread appears. The challenge will actually begin on 11/15 (the day after our current challenge ends). The challenge will end on 2/15 (90 days later). The reason for a 90-day challenge is that it takes 90 days of doing a particular behavior to form a "habit."

Anyone who wants to be part of the Winter Challenge will post ONE (1) message indicating her interest. NOTE: this is not a thread where we discuss stuff with each other. Each of us gets just ONE (1) post & we edit that everday to post our progress. In our original post, we will include whatever information we want and indicate the new habit that we want to form. [For me, it will be eating 6-9 servings of vegetables/fruit per day.]

I am suggesting that we can earn up to two (2) points/day. One (1) point for posting and one (1) point for actually doing our proposed habit.

At the end of the challenge (February 15) the person with the most points will win our virtual award –

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:SEukNlpGixw8JM:http://www.pastrykicks.com/v5/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/winner.jpg

From the day of winning until the end of the next challenge, the winner will post our virtual award as part of her signature (or as her avatar if she prefers). She will be known far and wide as the WINNER of the Winter 09-10Challenge until there is a new winner to take the trophy from her.

Let me know if you have other questions about this.

Good Morning Girls!
This week sure flew by fast due to leaving the comforts of my home every day, today I have a hair cut appointment. DH is taking me into town since we have rain and 50 mile an hour wind gusts.
Lynn...I'm very interested in the new challenge, and one post per person is perfect. That way we can check out everyone's post quicker.Winter Challenge will post ONE (1) message indicating her interest. NOTE: this is not a thread where we discuss stuff with each other. Each of us gets just ONE (1) post & we edit that everday to post our progress. Love it, love it, love it!
I'm going to set up the November thread today while I'm thinking about it. Sometimes I forget!
This afternoon I'll have to put together all the goodies in the freezer for my Halloween treat bags, oh the temptations!:nono:Yesterday I made popcorn balls with peanuts in them, great recipe because they stay soft. I ate two of them but recorded them and still stayed within my calories. I'll have to pretend the homemade peanut butter cups taste like cat do-do.
Have a good one...

Hmmmmmm, Lynn. That winter challenge sounds like something I NEED to be involved in. I'm not sure which habit I want to focus on (there are so MANY that I should be forming) but between now and when it starts, I'll narrow it down.
In the meantime, I am home today, "sick of work". I have so many sick days built up that it's ridiculous. 3 personal days, too, that are lost at the end of the year if I don't take them. And some leftover vacation days, too, which I'm not sure about. If my son is coming home for Christmas, then I will naturally take them then. If he can't - which might be the case this year, because he took on a project management position a few months back and really can't leave his team hanging during the busiest part of the year (videogames + Christmas = questions and trouble shooting, even though the design & testing is long since over with). His SO is anxious to move back to New England (although I can't for the life of me, see why) so he's gearing up to getting his resume out in the Boston area. Naturally, I will love having him closer to home if they DO move back, but He's still working to complete his masters degree, and let's face it - higher education out in CA is a WHOLE lot cheaper than it is in Boston. ANYway, if he can't make it home, then I'll fly out to spend some time with him (and her...grrrr) a couple of weeks before Christmas. Hmmm. Maybe if I complain about the changing weather patterns in New England, and tell some real horror stories about driving the Mass Pike in blizzards, she will have a second or third thought about it, and he'll be able to at least finish school out there instead of paying through the nose for every course he takes here in Massachusetts.
Well, as I said, I'm home today - I'll be going with my daughter (and the little twins) over to my granddaughter's school after lunch to watch their little Hallowe'en parade. That'll be fun. In the meantime, I'll spend a leisurely morning dabbling here on the 'net, take a nice, long bubbly bath, wash my hair, and pamper myself outrageously. DH IS home, of course. This is not one of those "time to myself" events, I'm afraid. Even after having some discussion with him about it a month or so ago, and hoping against hope that he might consciously arrange to give me some time to myself occasionally, things are no better in that particular arena. Truthfully speaking, when I AM home off-schedule, so to speak, I feel a tad uncomfortable - like we get in each other's space too much when it's not during our normal hours to interact. Or I'm getting in his, and feeling resentful because I sense that I'm in his. So, then, where is MY space, I ask? Do I have to traipse up and down store aisles or find a spot to park my car somewhere just to be alone for a little darned bit? Okay, I'll stop whining now. :o
DH had a flu shot at the beginning of the week, and has had a scratchy throat and stuffy nose, and just generally feeling tired and run down ever since. Blah. I hate those flu shots! I've had a few bad reactions myself in the past to various vaccines, and am a little up in the air about what to do about the H1N1 if it ever makes it to my segment of the population. I read an article recently, though, about how people incarcerated in prisons were on the priority list for the shots, and a lot of folks were outraged that *criminals* would be getting something that they couldn't get yet. Pretty shortsighted, from my perspective. Having a virus like that run rampant through the prison population would affect way more than just the prisoners, for gawd's sake! What about the corrections officers carrying it home with them and out into the general population? Or the cost involved if they have to quarantine whole facilities...doctors, nurses, social workers, office workers, etc? What about the visitors infected and carrying it home - and into the community with them - before the quarantine goes into effect? I swear, so many just have knee-jerk reactions, and don't even THINK past their first impressions! Blah.
Isabella and Bobbi - I am SO with you on the bargain hunting! And am now picking up things for next summer, too, when I spot a deal. I got some really sweet open-toe black canvas sliders that normally go for @ 90 buckaroonies for $25. Gotta love it! :D
Okay. Bad confessions. Last night, DH went to bed early because of his stuffy nose, etc., and I watched a couple of movies on Netflix all by myself. In between the two movies, I went out to the kitchen and got myself about 250 calories' worth of Sun Chips (omigawd, I LOVE sunchips, but usually give myself EIGHT in a little baggie to bring to work - that's 70 calories, which I dutifully add into my daily totals) and about 25 seedless green grapes, which aren't killers all by themselves, but with the sunchips, that was a good 350 calories more than I needed yesterday. Tsk. Mindless munching. That's what I was doing. I HATE it when I give in and do that stupid stuff!
Hi Freda! (Glad you're still around...I sorta knew you were, but just hadn't caught up with you! :) Glad you're getting some decent fall weather, too!)
Enjoy your time off, Gayle, Hi Donna - hope you aren't snowed in by now! Hi Karen -
Hiya, Lindy and Judy! Y'all should come on back, now!
Over and out (finally! :dizzy:)

Good afternoon ladies. Busy day today, baking and cooking for the weekend and DIL's family. Her grandmother's funeral is on Sunday. I don't know why they waited so long unless family is flying home or maybe they didn't want the funeral on Halloween. But I have a tortellini casserole, raisin buns and homemade jam ready to take to them. DIL's parents live across the street from us so it won't be a long journey.

H1N1 furor is at its height in Newfoundland. There's so much information and mis-information going around it's hard to sort it all out. All vaccine schedules have been bumped up but I still don't know when it'll be where I live. Sometime next week but not sure which day. I wasn't sure if I was going to get the shot but my mind is now made up and I will be getting it. DH drives a school bus and is exposed to snotty-nosed kids everyday and who knows what germs and bacteria he'll bring home. Anyway, if I grow a curly tail, I'll be somewhat peeved.

Must go and track my food on fitday. Have a good weekend everyone.

Good morning! It's downright HOT here today, almost 39! There's just about 20" of snow in my front yard, and I'm no longer enchanted with winter. Even so, life is good! Isabella, you got fitday working again? I'm having so much FUN with that! Thanks! And you can hide the curly tail, if necessary; however, that NOSE is difficult! Snort snort! If I could figure out how to get a url address for a picture, I'd include a cute pig picture in here. Stay warm! Onward and upward!

Good afternoon ladies.

Just got back from visiting DM. She is finally in a nursing home now after a long drawn out time (almost 2 yrs) of trying to explain to her that it was impossible for her to live in her own apartment. She is 91. I'm sure glad she is there as she just got over an episode with gout in her knee which was very painful for her. She still can't put any weight on her leg so they have had to move her around wih a lift.

Anyway, I'm going to have to start journaling my food so I can keep track of what I eat. It's so easy to forget one or two things.

DH and I have had the ordinary flu shot but the one for H1N1 may take a while yet. The lineups are so long, maybe next week if they don't run out.

Going to see what I can have for lunch.

Have a great day.

Hi ladies. May I join you? I joined this site in June at my daughter's urging. She lost 60 lbs this year and looks fantastic! I try to keep up with her support group, but really can't. They are mostly in their 20s-30s (kids!), and can run and drop weight like crazy!

ELLABELLA ~ How old are your daughter's twins? My daughter's twin girls were three in August. I hear you about "alone time." I always try to take a week off when my DH and kids are working and in school! I need it! I usually end up cleaning out closets and such, but that's fine, I'm all by myself and I love it! Don't know how we'll manage if and when we ever retire.

LYNN ~ I'll look for that challenge thread.

BOBBI ~ Aw, how nice of you to make Halloween treats! I have yet to buy any candy. We get fewer and fewer kids each year.

RETIREDONE ~I'm with you on the H1N1 shot. I want it, now! This is the first time that a flu epidemic has scared me.

JESS ~ I checked your weather forecast as I am making a stopover there on Monday. Things are warming up for you!

LINDY ~Wow, your mom was just recently living on her own? My dad is 88, and I think he will be moving in here soon (that is if I can get a kid or two to move out!).

I just responded to this page. I'm looking forward to getting to know you "chicks"

I'm on my way to bed but I saw your post Late to the game. Welcome to the Golden Girls. You'll love it here. No spunky 20 or 30 year olds here. :D

I crashed yesterday when putting the Halloween bags together for my grand kids. I knew I would, went over my 1200 calories and lost a point for the day.
But today I'm back on track and the left-over treats are out of sight. The popcorn balls with peanuts in them kept calling my name. I think I'll take all the remaining popcorn balls over to DD house today so I won't be tempted.
I have a book from Heinz vinegar titled, 'Over 100 helpful household hints'. I've shared some of the tips before, today's tip:
Homemade Cough Syrup
During a period of cold or flu, make your own cough syrup to have on hand. Mix 1/4 cup honey and 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, pour into a jar or bottle that can be tightly sealed. Shake well before each use. Take 1 Tablespoon every 4 hours. If cough persists for more than a week, see a physician.

Welcome Ducky...this is the last day to post on the October thread, the November thread has been started. Nice that Mom/daughter are working together to lose a few pounds. Lynn started a new challenge thread you can join for posting a new GOOD HABIT if you're interested.Hi ladies. May I join you? I joined this site in June at my daughter's urging.

Happy Halloween everyone! :haphal: I am going to try to remember that the candy is for the kids - not for me!

I have a busy weekend ahead of me. Need to pack for our vacation to Cancun. A week from today we will be soaking up the sun. Never been to Mexico, so it should be interesting. Mostly I am looking forward to spending a week of down time with our two sons who live in Toronto now. We live in Alberta, which is the other end of the country, so we don't get to see them much, unless you count Skype. I love Skype, and I love the person who invented it. It is much more gratifying to be able to see your loved ones while you talk to them, even if it is just on a computer screen.

Going for my H1N1 shot on Tuesday. Can't go until after work, so hope they don't run out before that! They have been turning people away because they ran out before the clinic is over. I don't mind waiting in line, but it is hard to schedule when you work. I'll try to get off a bit early that day. I just figure with travelling I would rather have it than not.

The day before we leave we have to go to Calgary for an appt. to start the process for DH to enter a drug trial for prostate cancer. We'll see if he meets the parameters. We have been down this road once before and he was turned down. Each drug trial has specific parameters that you must fall into to qualify.

Lynn, very sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Good luck with your treatments, and the Christmas gifts. ;)

Well, off to do house work, laundry and packing. Have a great weekend!

"You may freely eat of every tree in the garden." Genesis 2:16

Notice God said we may FREELY EAT. (That caught my attention). But it says, "of every tree in the garden." I looked and looked, but it doesn't say you may freely eat of Kit Kats, Hershey Kisses, Snickers, etc. even if they are bite size.

I have to tell you that I stopped giving out candy a few years ago. Just couldn't handle it. And you know what? My name did not appear on the police blotter next day in the paper. The world did not go into a holding pattern either.

Have a great Halloween everyone!

Halloween candy doesn't bother me. It's the chips I can't resist so I didn't buy any. I'm passing out individual rice krispie treats. I haven't opened one and they could stay there all year and never be opened. But, to my shame I've had more adult treats. Cheese cake, carrot cake, chocolate peanut butter pie, nachos and cheese. Should have stuck with fruit of the trees. Most of the desserts were only very small pieces, though and this is my free day for dessert. I'll be up bright and early tomorrow (as the clocks are gone back to standard time tonight) walking.

DS and DIL are staying overnight to attend DIL's grandmother's funeral tomorrow. They've gone to her parent's house to pass out treats while her mother is at the funeral home tonight. This is their first halloween together as a couple and they brought their treats with them from their home so they could pass them out. How cute!

The ghosts and goblins are scarce this year. We've only had about 15 kids so far and it's nearly 7 o'clock. We usually have about 40 or 50 by this time. I think with the scare of swine flu and the weather (light rain) combined have whittled down the numbers.

Have a good night and I'll see you all in November.
