When you have a headache, what do you take?
Over here, we say that we need some aspirin or paracetamol.
what brand names are common in the US?
v busy at work (above is, believe it or not, a work-related question!). will try to post later, if not will def post tomorrow.

usually tylenol, advil or alieve

midol (for the cramp inspired headache)

Tylenol is the brand name for acetaminephin. Advil, Nutrin and Motrin are brand names for ibuprofen. Aspirin is aspirin, but there are brand names for that, too--Bayer, Bufferin, and Excedrin contains aspirin. Aleve is the brand name for naproxen.
