Avoid eating the chips that come before the meal. You could save yourself an extra 200 calories and nine grams of fat in one serving. If available, use fresh carrot sticks or celery sticks to dip into the salsa.
Choose items that are grilled or baked rather than fried or breaded. Items like grilled chicken fajitas or tacos al carbon are flavorful and are not as high in fat and calories as enchiladas or tacos.
Stay away from extra cheese and sour cream. Those will add extra fat and calories to your meal. If you are viewing the cheese as a protein source, consider a meal made with black beans, grilled shrimp or chicken instead.
Request corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas. On average, this will save you 200 calories and about nine grams of fat. If you are sticking to a strict diet, eat only the meat and vegetables and leave the tortillas.
Use salsa as a salad dressing rather than a traditional ranch or vinaigrette. Most salsas have little to no fat in them and are low in calories.
Cut your meal in half and eat the rest for lunch the next day. It might not be the ideal method for eating healthy, but cutting back on your portion size means taking in roughly 210 calories rather than 420 calories for just two enchiladas.
I saw those on another site. Hope it helps.
Have a wonderful time

Last time we went out for Mexican I did the following (a lot will sound similar to onederchic):
1) Did not eat the chips and salsa my sweetie got
2) Ordered tacos al pastor -- these are marinated and grilled
3) Asked to replace the rice and beans with a side salad
4) when the 2 tacos came, each was served on 2 corn tortillas. I only ate one of each -- this gets tricky, though, as the remaining taco can have a tendency to fall apart.
The tacos were delish!

I get a taco salad with black beans instead of meat and drown it in chalula hot sauce! I also don't eat the shell. But I DO allow myself some sour cream.

There's a place near me that does "naked" burritos and taco salads. No shell or tortilla. I read somewhere recently that the deep-fried shell for a taco salad can have up to 1000 calories! I always go for grilled chicken and/or black beans and easy on the cheese and sour cream.

soft shell chicken tacos with extra lettuce and pico de gallo.
chicken fajitas, extra lettuce and pico de gallo
The mexican place we visit has a buffet which can be dangerous for me but is actually pretty easy there because I can make like a mexican salad with whats on the buffet.

get the fajitas. Skip the tortilla shell and just eat the fillings (chicken, peppers, onions with salsa and a tiny dab of sour cream) Get refried beans for your side.

Thank you all soooo much!
I am very proud of myself. When we got there, I opened the menu and the first thing I saw was a grilled chicken salad. I decided to just close the menu there. Mexican is one of my favs so I knew it would be hard not to get something bad for me. The salad was very good too...grilled chicken, a little cheese, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions & carrots. And I even put salsa on it instead of ranch! As far as the chips, well, I had to have a few. I took 5 chips and broke them into smaller bite size pieces & ate slower that I would have in the past. It was great, b/c I did not feel like I was depriving myself since I was eating them. But I don't feel guilty since I only had 5 chips! Lets hope I can keep up the determination!
Thanks for the support guys & girls!
Good Luck to all!

Oh, good! I've always thought we (losers) can do well on Mexican. Plenty to avoid, but also lots of veggies. I do well at my favorite Mediterranean takeout, once a month. Lots of vegetables.
