Default Where does nutritional yeast fit in?

I have a couple of recipes that call for nutritional yeast. I'm assuming it is a phase I ingredient; does anyone know for sure?

Thanks, Lori

I believe nutritional yeast is fine for Phase 1, since it's in the same nutritional catagory as mushrooms. Here's some helpful information regarding it -

Does anyone know what this stuff is? They offered it as a popcorn topping at an independent theatre near us, and then I heard someone in a book making fun of that very thing. They said it tastes "nutty." Intriguing!

I think they are little yeasts, single celled organisms. It it the best way for vegans to get B12 in their diet, very tasty on popcorn Our movie theater offers it on their fresh popped corn with real butter. That place scares me now

Lori - Would love to se your recipes! We use yeast in scrambled tofu, homemade seitan and gravies mostly. Would love more ideas

And, if you are a dog, it helps repel fleas! Sorry!

Does it work for mosquitoes? Not that I could find it in 50 miles!

I love nutritional yeast, although I have a hard time finding it in anything but a big bin at whole foods- and that kind of grosses me out... my mom gets it from her local co-op so I will have her to start getting it for me. I tend to use mine for gravies mostly but I have been making brussel sprouts and sprinkling some on top and its great! I didn't really used to like brussel sprouts much but I really do like them this way!

CyndiM-

Like you, I use it in scrambled tofu, as a topping sometimes on snacky items, and in homemade gravies. I'm not vegan; I LOVE meat. I just like the taste and the nutrient-density of nutritional yeast. I sneak it in my youngest dd's food sometimes, because she doesn't eat a lot of variety and rarely eats meat.
