Okay, let me give you a small tidbit of background. I worked for a huge medical group a couple of years ago and they did an employee fitness fair. I weighed 255 at the time and my fasting BS was 219, which indicates "pre diabetes".

I have not had my BS checked since then, but I have gained and lost 70+ pounds since then. HOWEVER, when I eat a meal that has a lot of carbs or something with a lot of sugar (which I try not to do)....... I am so freaking tired I cannot hold my head up. For example, today my DH and I went fishing and we stopped at the Lake restaurant for a burger and fries for lunch. I ate what I could of it and by the time we were on our way home, I seriously could not keep my eyes open. Now, I can drink a SlimFast or something like that and it does not affect me, just meals with carbs, or a "real" soda. I am wondering if I need to go to a doctor or is it just a "carb coma"?

Thanks for listening.

I would get a cheap meter from Wal-Mart and test your sugar and if it comes back low/high than you'll know whats going on. But hypoglycemia can start before you become diabetic. If your insulin was working correctly you wouldn't get sleepy.

I would see a doctor for followup of the blood sugar, regardless of your symptoms. A fasting blood sugar of 219 isn't and never was "pre-diabetes." That is far above levels used to diagnose diabetes outright.

I'm going second the suggestions to go see your doctor.

Everyone should get a yearly physical so just call and make an appt for one. Checking blood sugar is pretty standard but ask to make sure. Have the office send you a RX for blood work, get that done first then make an appt to see the doctor. They will know how long it takes to get lab results back and can schedule you accordingly.

If you do not have insurance or can not afford a physical please see if there is a free clinic in your area or if a local hospital is running some kind of free or low cost testing.

We worry most about the unkown. Taking care of this will give you peace of mind. Diabetes, even pre-diabetes is nothing to mess around with. And if it is just a 'carb coma' then that is good to know too.

Take care.
