Featherweights - Featherweights Plan and Chat in August

Oh ho! It's the second of August already!
What's up Featherweights?
I'm starting the month with a 12 hr shift. I'm not used to that and will have to plan my food carefully. I've got the fixin's in the fridge and just have to toss it into containers for all my minimeals.
I did pretty well with the elliptical the last couple of weeks. I can do that again in August, yup.

Hello, first post in the Featherweights forum!
I am 7lbs from goal, and it's tough! I always tend to become complacent right about now. Hiccup #1: I went to a welcome dinner for all the new teachers at our school. That part went fine. But we decided to go out afterward, and let's just say I'm keeping a lot of secrets from FitDay. I tend to be pretty introverted during the year, so one of my goals has been to be more sociable, but I need to learn how to do that and not take in too many calories. Not easy!
Moderation, moderation, moderation! How can I ever do it??

:welcome2: BKKchick. I know exactly what you mean about becoming complacent when you get close to your goal. I've done it too many times.
I'm back from the bosom of my cake-loving family and a quick step on the scale told me all I feared. I refuse to move my ticker as the weight's not staying and the number's scared me!
Ilene how did the practical go? I am beyond impressed that you've trained to become a personal trainer.

Good morning!
The scale was a bit of a surprise this morning but it reflects how I feel. Super puffy, a bit of a headache ... yuck! And I thought that (for a change) I didn't eat too badly over the weekend.
As for exercise, I only got one walk in and I haven't been on the elliptical for a few days. I guess that's my plan for later today.

doughnut I'm with you!
I havent' stepped on the scale (YET) this morning, but I know it will show an higher number because last night I terribly binged (yes I'm a "chick in control" user eheheh... recovering from BED... but I guess I can be a featherweight too :p)... anyway I will NOT move my ticker! :D Because I've been 131 for a month now, so I think it's quite a "permanent" weight and I should not be too scared if when I get home (I'm at work now) I see an higher number. It WILL come down, right? RIGHT? ehehhe. sorry for this monologue, I just needed to vent a little to reassure myself :carrot:
BTW... last month I wrote here in the forum that I was scared to go on holidays, because there was the high possibility to binge and overeat and gain back too much weight... well, actually I DID BINGE a lot, and I was superscared to step on the scale when I came back... but I was also determined not to give up. I'm not giving up... even if I'm not perfect!
Anyway... after my holidays I gained JUST ONE pound... almost a miracle, I thought at least 6 ehehhe! And that pound is already lost back.
Now I just have to stay CALM and FIRM and re-lost what I surely gained last night:carrot:
I will come back here for accountability... and to read about your journeys too, of course!

Scale did not move in the right direction in July. Same goal for August - to see lucky 13 at the begining of my weight. Back to basics and being accountable for what I eat. I could list excuses but they are just that excuses.

Hello everyone!
I'm thinking positively about those last pounds melting off in the next few weeks! I'm zig zagging my calories this week and upping the intensity during my workouts. Hoping to be at 130 when I leave for my vacation on the 25th (less would be good too!). Took Sunday off this week for rest day and will probably take off Thursday as well since I think I'm going to do JM's Kickboxing dvd today before work.

:welcome: BKKchick  ... Complacency is the story of my weightloss journey too, hence the reason I am never very long in the maintainers forum  ...
Ilene how did the practical go? I am beyond impressed that you've trained to become a personal trainer.Thank you for asking Doughtnut, the practical went very well  I am now a certified personal trainer, at 52 :faint:... I can't believe it myself... I have no idea what I will do with it, I did it only for personal satisfaction. I do have 2 clients at the moment and between the two of them I stay very busy plus I also work part time at school mornings only 8:30 to noon, I love it....
Same goal for August - to see lucky 13 at the begining of my weight. what a cute way of putting that...
I'm not giving up... even if I'm not perfect! I think you're doing very well  ... I don't think that to lose weight, and more importantly to maintain this weight loss later, perfection is not key but consistency is... No one can be perfect, IMHO....

Hello ladies! I am new to the featherweight section. I have been back on track this week and have lost 2lbs so far. My big fear is the weekend because I always lose sight of my goals when just relaxing with my husband. My mini goal this weekend is to only go off plan for one meal. Saturday afternoons we like to go out for lunch. I will allow myself some good eatin but only that! Fingers crossed I can make that happen! I am HORRIBLE on the weekends! I am so close to breaking into the 140s and I want to see it on my scale darn it!
fingers crossed!

Harps you can do it! :carrot:
Just be relaxed and don't even think too much about it... too much concentration could be FATAL! :D
(at least for me... if I think too much something like "don't eat don't eat"... I end up in eating more than I would have "felt" naturally, without thinking :dizzy:)
Ilene thanks for your support!
And OMG, not only you are doing a LOT of exercise (compared to me, at least! ehehe)... you are also a personal trainer, wow!
Great success!! :D:carrot:

I like to drink on the weekends too, which often leads to...well, to be honest, these days I'm not too sure. In spite of revealing too much about myself, I am somewhat recovering from addiction. I wrote about it in my blog. And my husband is now "recovering" as well because I refuse to do drugs anymore, so he's just SOL basically. I don't think he's happy about it per se, but he knows I am right, so what can he do?
So anyway, on the weekends I would drink, do drugs and chain smoke, I try not to smoke cigarettes anymore either, so as hard as this may be for most of you to understand, I sort of don't know what to do with myself anymore. Being high for fun for basically the past 17years has left me with a gaping hole as to how to have fun without some sort of substance. I don't even really like drinking. I never did, but when I mixed it with getting high, it was tolerable.
I think that may be why I love exercise so much lately. It satisfies my need to be messing with my body somehow (fortunately this is a good thing!!) and
this is where food comes in too I guess....the weekends have become weird. My DH is not healthy and does not really care for healthy activities. He's tall and slim by default.
sorry ladies, probably said too much here...

BUT on the upside I did run a very nice 5k around the track early this morning... it was nice and cool and I enjoyed it tremendously... I kinda like running the track, it's mindless and you can get in the zone quite quickly, no worry about traffic, lights, dogs, etc....My ipod was dead but I didn't mind at all for some reason running with no music... Other than the food fest this afternoon  it's been a good day... Tomorrow WILL be a better day food wise... Weather permitting I will do a 25k or so bike ride in the morning ...

Well I live in England so obviously it's raining here :D
I've dropped a bit of weight this week which makes me happy. It's less than a pound of my official start weight but it's 3 down on last Monday's weight - I'd just refused to log it!
I have a horrible week workwise so I'm hoping I won't have time to eat. Ooh and I managed a tiny amount of exercise yesterday.

I've been out there crazy busy at work and "fighting the good fight"
There was a huge seminar scheduled at our site for a "go-live" event on a new test we're designing. This of course means that "The Feeder" was in her glory.
Banquets, cocktail parties, baseball games, breakfast chefs, cook outs, dinners out, and a booze cruise on one of the sales team guys yacht. She got to order the food for it all.
And I get to say I'm DOWN a pound after it all. WHEW!!!
Doughnut: The deal is that we both started our jobs on the same day as the first employess at our site. She seemed to have dialed herself to the "Kill setting" when she met me. It happens. She is morbidly obese and seems to enjoy feeding people. Then when they say "Oh I can't believe I ate that" she likes to say "Well no one MADE you eat it!". It's my daily challenge to eat just what I have planned...
So this week I'll get back to walking the skywalk and keeping my white knucles clenched. Gotta catch up reading the posts!

Um, what's a skywalk? I'm trying to think of an langauage equivalent for here but I can't think what you mean. They might know in London I suppose :dizzy:
The fact that she's morbidly obese makes her behaviour easier to understand. You must look pretty good at your weight so I guess she's trying to make herself feel better. I actually find it easy to refuse food offered/thrust upon me by very large people because it reminds me what happens when you eat it. These days however, I'm one of the largest in my social circle which just makes me want to eat more out of some peverse self-abuse :?:
Well it's bedtime here and I've made it through on calories - 4 days in a row. Night all.

Silverbirch! Hi hello!
I think a skywalk is like a tunnel adjoining buildings but it's up. Over a street or waterway. I'm pretty sure I've been to a convention building in Ohio that's connected to a hotel across the street that way. No rain, no weather ... no getting hit by a car.

This means I get to go straight home to my husband after work and be lazy on the couch :) I can't wait! I really hope I can keep this up! Going the gym in the morning has left me a bit exhausted today but hopefully in a week or so I'll just get used to it. Hi Featherweights!
Well I'm three weeks into my diet/fitness/exercise program and getting a bit discouraged. I gained 0.5 lb in the past week and total weight loss is only 2 lbs despite exercise every day -- alternating cardio and weights/abs exercises. I've been great about staying on diet food and portion wise too. I'm hoping I just have some water weight gain.
I continuing to plug away but uggg I just want that first 5 lbs gone!!!

Hi everybody!
Good Job SusanB! That is an accomplishment and keep it up!!
I am feeling real good today! I have gone to the gym every morning this week! My weight flucuated a bit this week, but finally this morning the Wii Fit scale said 149.5! I have broken (barely LOL) into the 140's woohoo!! My Wii Fit told me my BMI is now "normal" and my Mii went from being chubby to average looking, hahaha made me laugh how 1/2 a lb makes that much of a difference in a computer program or on a chart but in real life it isn't really all that simple!
Either way I am so pleased, because this means, hopefully, that I will now be struggling in the 140's instead of the 150's for the next however long and that makes me happy!
yay!

Yawn....
Good morning!
Susan B. is exactly right about the skywalk. Very handy in Michigan in January!
Harps--Mega Kudos for getting into the 140's!
Silverbirch--sounds like we've got a bit in common. I'm 52 years old trying to keep up with my 3 year old son. I swear he could go 24/7 if we didn't duct tape him to his bed at night--Oh for a shot of his energy.
But then, that is a big part of why I'm doing this--to be able to keep up with him and to be here for him when I'm 65 and he's 16 (shudder).
jayjay--we're in in the same neighborhood as far as body weight goes. Getting closer to goal always means to me that it gets waaaay slower. We just have to hang in there.
Today "The Feeder" is ordering in lavish spreads again since the boss will be in town today and tomorrow. I arranged to be in the laboratory [a different site] both days to stay safe from the carbo-loading about to hit the fan!
Guess I'm feeling more ruthless the closer I get to the 120's!

Oh man, if that were me I'd probably phone all my friends and tell them! My exercise regime has been non-existent since I buggered my knee on a run in January and that started the pile on from the mid 130s to virtually 160. How did I let this happen to me? Again.
Harps - woohoo! Many congratulations
Spanky - keep The Feeder stories coming - I find them peversely entertaining :D
I'm doing really well - I've been totally Op for a week now. I'm not exactly being hard on myself though as I'm averaging 1400 cals per day with no exercise. It's enough to drop half or three quarters of a pound a week without me feeling deprived and then breaking down in a mad binge. Frankly any loss right now is great, anything to stop that number hitting 160 which just is not acceptable to me.
Oh well, must go lounge around now ;)

This morning she sent us an email saying that the company wants to cut costs so both the COFFEE and the WATER will be discontinued!!!!! Not the soft drinks, not the hot chocolate, not the wine, not even the champaign [I kid you not here]--- just coffee and water.

spanky -- can't believe no water but champagne at the office? I want to come work there LOL! Glad to hear you are finding ways to circumvent the Feeder.
So Tuesday is my weigh in day -- hate it! Lost 0.5 lb so that is OK but just back to where I was two weeks ago. Losing only 2.5 lbs in four weeks seems really little progress to me, but I'm trying to be positive because I don't think it would be healthy for me to cut calories further or to work out more. This week I'm cutting out wine :( -- my last remaining vice -- to try to speed things up.
Still, again trying to be positive, it looks like my waist and hips are each down 1 inch. On the other hand my bust is up 1 inch but this leads me to believe I'm holding water/bloated, so hoping a few pounds of water weight will go away soon.

Hi everyone. I'm new. I started at 136/7, then quickly dropped 7/8 pounds (at one point the scale was clearly below 129). But now it's getting harder b/c the first 7 pounds, I could still eat "healthy" chocolate chip cookies (from recipe from superfoods RX--w/dark choc, walnuts & oatmeal, but a butter/sugar/flour base--so still very yummy). I actually think I was eating much more when I was losing (following whole foods diet). Then I started eating smaller portions and this week I GAINED 1.5 pounds--even though I was exercising like crazy and still eating very healthy. The only addition was Newman's Own Light Balsamic Vinaigrette to my salads (when I started, I was eating veggies steamed in chicken broth instead).
So I'm pretty bummed about the weight gain but still really hoping to lose 10 (or, now 11) pounds.
I was eating watermelon and strawberries for dessert for a week or two, but I *really* crave my evening cookies. Otherwise I don't have much trouble sticking to the eating plan, even on weekends. It's just those darn dat-blasted cookies that kill me!! (Oh, yeah, and the dressing, but THAT I can live without).

I'm really struggling today but I know it's only head hunger so I'm trying to ignore it. Had a 12 hour work day am too tired (mentally more than physically) to do any exercise. This is when it's dangerous :(

Spanky and Doughnut,
Thank you very much for the welcomes.
I don't know what happened, but I got on the scale today and my weight was down 3 pounds!!
Also, I discovered a great substitute for salad dressing. I used to eat 2 TBSP of light newman's own balsamic and I thought that might have caused my weight gain. So I switched to lots of lemon juice, salt, pepper, and just 1/2 TBSP of the dressing. It tastes really yummy and lots less fat calories.
Doughnut--please get some sleep. Too hard to ignore food when too tired.

Yay that's great! Gosh it's been a long while since I saw a drop like that.

Yep, it's gone 10pm here now but it feels a lot later. I've somehow stayed on calories today. Dead chuffed :D Anyway, I could sleep on a pin so I'm off. Night all.

Hi featherweights!
Doughnut -- hope you got some sleep and congrats for staying on calories!
Determined Woman -- welcome! I'm a newbie myself. Congrats on the 3 lbs loss that's huge!
Ilene -- you sound amazingly fit, very inspiring!
spanky -- you must have great will power, brownies are so tempting for me!
I'm finally making some progress with water weight/bloating going away. This is going to be a long haul but I'm sticking with it.
I'm down to a Normal BMI vs Overweight the last few days. Unfortunately my body fat % is still 35.5% which I've seen described as Obese. I'm really small boned and I've calculated my lean body mass at only 88-89 lbs. My target is to get my body fat down to 25% which would put me at 118.
Have a great weekend everyone!

JayJay,
I'm definitely not a weight loss expert, but I just cannot imagine that 140 pds is obese--no matter what your body composition. And how are you measuring your body fat? I've heard those scales that distinguish aren't always reliable--that the only reliable method is being weighed in water (which I've never done).
I wouldn't worry about labels. Just eat healthy and exercise, the rest will follow.
One time I gained a LOT of weight for me (my weight was about 150). This was about 15 years ago now. It was caused by anti-depressant meds (which thankfully I do not need at this point in my life). But, anyway, I stopped taking the meds, yet I still had the weight and couldn't lose. I didn't focus much on the number, labels, or anything. I just reverted back to my formerly healthy lifestyle (exercise, eating healthy). I just figured that was the lifestyle for me no matter what my weight. I didn't even really check the scale.
I'm not even sure when I dropped the weight, but it seems like it was not too long before I weighed 120 again using that mindset. Labels are depressing. :(
Good luck.

Good morning girls
On the subject of BMI... Sometimes BMI can be misleading if you are a very fit or athletic person... My BMI is very high also, 27, but I wear a size 8... I don't feel that's overweight ... So we have to be careful... According to the calculator I should weigh 140 lbs to be a healthy weight...well I would be very petite at that weight and quite muscular which wouldn't be a bad thing  but I have the darndest time getting there... I haven't been at that weigth in 19 years, since DD was born  ... but one could only hope...
Here's a calculator (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/)
Now I've got to get back to work...:comp:

Per the calculator my current BMI is 23.4
Once I get to my goal weight it will be 20.4
Both fall into the Normal weight category. My current one is just a little bit close to overweight for me.
At my current weight I wear a 8/10 and at my goal weight I wear a 6/8 which is exactly what I want. :)

Melly83 -- welcome!
Determined Woman -- yes you are so right...I should forget about labels or categories but sometimes I find it motivating too! I'm using a Tanita scale to measure body fat but I'm sure it's not very reliable. I would love to do the water measurement someday to get a reality check.
Ilene -- thanks for the calculator! I agree that these things can be misleading depending on individual build and muscle tone. Just makes it much more confusing for me to really figure out what is a healthy weight for me...I guess I will just play it by ear and see when i feel "right."

Yep, I think I read somewhere that BMI is definitely not accurate for athletic people. I think it said that waist to hip ratio (or some other ratio I can't remember) was a much better indicator of fitness/health.
But whatever motivates you is great. For me, it was the number on the scale--that simple. Someone convinced me to stop weighing myself a couple of years ago (said it was too obsessive). Then I got injured from running and had a couple of very stressful life years to boot. When I finally decided to step on a scale, I was honestly mortified. I thought of myself as a thin healthy runner, but the number simply was not consistent with my thought.
For anyone reading, I would definitely vow to never, ever stop weighing yourself--at least once a week.
One really easy thing to do if you just can't break from unhealthy foods is to eat healthy all day, then skip dinner and eat a relatively healthy dessert (only) instead of dinner. Might be crazy but has helped me, I think.

Determind Woman - I'm the same way. I always end up gaining weight when i don't weigh myself every day. The scales seem to be my conscience. And I know some people would be mortified at the thought of me weighing myself every morning but different things do work for different people.
I love the eating a healthy dessert for supper. Maybe I need to try that. Does ice cream count?? :)

I have been weighing everyday too even though I officially record my progress only once a week. I hate the daily weight in -- like today i'm up 1 lb for no reason. Still, I think it keeps me in touch with what's happening. I find if I don't weigh regularily the weight can creep up. I guess what ever works is good. Like today I will exercise more than I planned because of the extra 1 lb -- even though I know it's probably just bloating it will motivate me to do more cardio.

Hello feathers  I seem to be doing quite well at the moment. I've dropped almost a pound a week on 1400-1500 cals per day and precious little exercise so that makes me happy. Had a weird moment a few minutes ago. I was nosing around the kitchen for "something" because I've had 1300 cals today and can afford something else. I then realised that I'm absolutely stuffed. Tha wouldn't normally stop me :o but I thought about it and realised that if I'm ever going to permanently shift these pesky extra 15-30 yo yoing pounds I'm going to have to make some lifestyle changes. Eaing when I'm not hungry is one of them :)

doughnut -- I did the same tonight before coming up for bed, looked in the cupboard, closed it and thought, I'm really not that hungry, go to bed!!
So here I am getting ready for bed, night all

I'm a night owl and that gets me in trouble SO MANY TIMES. Obviously when you up late you start getting hungry and late night hunger never leads to anything good. Going to bed is always the better option!

I'm so happy because I hit my first milestone of 5 lbs gone! It took me 5 weeks but I think that is a pretty good pace for sensible weight loss. I'm now really excited to tlose the next 5!

Question for you featherweights -- do you do planned "cheating"? I told myself that if I lost 5 lbs I could get a bacon cheese burger. But now that I've actually lost the weight I'm not sure I want to offset my progress with all those calories and fat. Not sure what to do?
Melly83
08-25-2009, 09:57 AM
jayjay77 - Nope don't do it. I used to use food as a treat when I lost a certain amount of weight. And then I was like, why am I doing this?? It makes no sense to allow myself to eat something unhealthy as a prize for losing weight. Go ahead and treat yourself. Buy a movie, a book, get a manicure but don't use food as a weight lose treat.

Melly83 -- thanks! That's good advice. I think I'll get a pedicure instead.

Yes I do do planned cheating but not really as a reward for losing. I sometimes plan to have an evening off - a meal out, night on the town or whatever - when I consciously decided to eat/drink what I fancy based on my appetite that night. Most nights out I do try to stay on plan but sometimes I just say no to rigid control. I also (very occasionally) have a day or sometimes a whole weekend when I eat what I want. I do this when I know I've run into trouble and can feel a binge coming. I have a horrible history of long slides into binging after weeks of being on track. In the past it has taken me weeks, sometimes months, to emerge from the binge and this is a huge part of why I yo yo so badly. I now let myself have a couple of days eating really badly if I need to. If I give myself permission then the binge ends much quicker and the damage is much more limited. Wow, sorry for rambling on. In short I never ever say "if I lose x I can eat y" but I might buy a new top!
Ilene Glad I'm not the only one who does this!
I'm stuggling a bit more tonight but being here does help so thanks to all on this great board.

Ladies, I need your support and I need ideas! Yesterday I purchased hotel and flight reservations for our trip to Grand Cayman for my friends wedding, leaving on November 4th (68 days away! not that I'm counting or anything!) and I SOOO want to be bikini ready by then! I really only need to lose 10-12 lbs. I go walking/jogging every morning for 2 - 4 miles (30min to an hour) :running:, depending on my schedule and how hot it gets outside! I do this EVERY DAY because I know if I skip a day, it will turn into two, three, then 6 months! I seriously need to find some alternate outdoor workout ideas before I get bored to death! 1) What are some of your favorite outdoor activities and why do you love them? 2) And does anyone have any favorite workout moves and why do you love them? Please help keep me on track to rock the bikini!
Thank!
Amy

if in your neighbourhood there is an outdoor pool... you might try swimming!
:swim:
So you can also get a little bit of tan ;)
I like it a lot because it's very relaxing and when I do it I REALLY see a difference on the scale (and it doesn't make me more hungry). At the beginning swimming seemed hard and annoying, but I just had to get used to it, little by little, and now I really enjoy it :carrot:

Doughnut -- thanks for your experience. At some point I will have to take a "break" from dieting, just trying to do it in a way that's responsible. I think it will take me 5-6 months to get to my target and that seems like a really long time to be 100% good.
Julietta -- I love swimming too! Just wish I had regular access to a pool! I spent a week in Vegas in April and went swimming every day and it was fantastic!
ShrinkingAmy -- ditto Julietta's suggestion for swimming, also biking. Do you do any sports? I'm terrible at sports but I took tennis lessons not too long ago and it was fun to just get out there and try to play. I'm more of an indoor workout person. I love the AC in the gym LOL! I also do workout's with dumbells and DVD's for yoga and pilates at home plus go to a yoga class weekly.

Amy your stats show that you are 5'7" @ 135, which is a really nice weight to start IMHO... My suggestion would be to start weight training it would give you tone and definition, along with a tan you'd wow  everyone at that wedding... If you're a member at a gym all the better, if not there are a lot of at home workouts just using body weight to start you off, just Google it.
Things are good at this end of the world... Gotta go I'm at work...

Thanks Julietta, Jayjay, and Ilene, I was thinking of incorporating some strenth training - i have small weights here at home that I can use - not a member of a gym yet. I'd love to swim... maybe I can borrow the pool at my in-laws community! Unfortunately our neighborhood doesn't have one. And I have a few dvd workouts (several, actually!) that I was thinking of dragging out. I guess you would say I'm "small boned" so 135 isn't as great as it sounds... it's not bad, but not great. I've definitely got the whole "muffin top" and "bingo arms" that I'd love to shed. I'm really not aiming for a 'number' per se but I just want to look fit and toned - although I figure 125 will = tone & fit if I keep working out.
As for today, I didn't do as hot as usual... I only walked 1.25 miles and it was crazy hot out and I was just "over it" so I walked back home. Tonight - since my dvd player is still packed in the basement until I dig it out tomorrow - I figured I'd do some crunches, pushups, and planks to make up for my slacker walk - i need to dig out those weights tomorrow too!. I didn't eat so great today either - ate some so-not-good-for-you potato chips and french onion dip! I was out of all my fruit so that's what I went straight for - so I went to the grocery store to restock on healthy stuff this afternoon - no excuse for the rest of the week!

ShrinkingAmy -- great job on stocking up on fruit! The DVDs and weights should really help you tone up
So I have a question. I'm on week six of my diet/exercise/weight loss program and I'm experiencing a lot of nausea. Has this happened to you? I had the same issue week 2 which I just chalked up to my body being not used to exercise, but I feel I should have adjusted by now. It could just be the heat and humidity. Of course this makes it pretty easy to stay on diet because I just don't feel like eating LOL.
