Continue ST'ing (Strength Training) 3 Days a week
Hey, :thanks: for explaining that acronym! I was having a hard time imagining what all this ST'ing was ;)
I think I am going to try weekly goals this time, except for stretching - just 15 min - every day. C'mon, I can find just 15 minutes to stretch out, right? My new exercise habit has made me quite stiff...
The very general goals:
Plan out the specific schedule each week (and stick to it!)
>3.5 hours cardio/week
> 1 hour ST'ing/week
15 min stretching/day

Urg, I love ya NSM, but man, that EA Active just really burns me up. I get so mad when I turn it on, I just want to chuck it out the window, get my car, run over it and then shift to reverse and run over it again. I'm trading it in to gamestop this weekend for Punch Out. Sorry ladies!

NSM~ I think maybe I'll do the EA challenge on the days that I do the C25K, maybe do one early in the morning and one at night? Hmm...I tell ya what, I won't flat out commit to doing it just yet, but I'll give it a go--why not? :D

:welcome: to all the Newbies! I look forward to getting to know you all! This is a great bunch of girls and they are pretty much the reason I'm still exercising! :)
FSA~ Hey hun, I'm going to change up my August Exercise Goals a little, could you update my goals please? :)
Currently they are:
Continue HIIT 3x/wk, continue strength training 3x/wk, add C25K 3x/wk, + trying pilates
However, after doing the first C25K workout this morning, I officially came to my senses and decided that I'm ditching the HIIT. However...I will be adding another form of exercise on my ST'ing days so it's now:
C25K 3x/Wk, ST'ing 3x/Wk, Add an additional form of exercise on my ST'ing days
I figured that since I want to up my exercise I should start doing different stuff to keep it interesting! :) That's one of the reasons I had 'try Pilates' in my original goals. So, I've got a few workout DVDs and a few sitting in my Netflix Que, not to mention I've got On Demand cable with some exercise shows on there--and I'll just mix it up! :)
Thanks so much hun!

I've only just joined but would like to take part in the Challenge.
My goals are:
Cardio 850
Stretching four times a week.
Okay girls, I am not off to a fantastic start. I *attempted* my HIIT today and whoa...lemme just say that one should not underestimate the importance of a good sports bra! My good one is in the wash so I grabbed my old one--not good! I knew right off the bat that doing all the HIIT intervals wouldn't be an option. So, I put the treadmill to the highest incline and a combo of brisk walking up hill and I think I got in 6 30 second running intervals--have you ever tried running while holding onto your chest? Lemme tell ya, even though they're smaller, the girls were all over the place and boy did I have a hard time running!
However, by the end of my usual HIIT time I was dripping sweat and laughing, so I guess all in all it was a decent workout. ;) Good thing I got in that extra cardio yesterday--I feel a little better about my sloppy workout today. :D

I'm totally gunshy on the C25K though. Working out in public (read: struggling to work out in public) is hard for me.

Oh my goodness...I haven't posted my goals here yet. How did I miss that? Too much distraction I guess. Okay, so my goals are:
1. Complete C25K, afterward log 6 miles running/wk
2. Bike 12 miles/wk
3. Strength train 2x/wk
4. Log 1300+ ex. min. for August
I'm training for a 5K in September and a duathlon in October. It should help me have more direction in my cardio sessions. For strength, I'm actually going to follow a program instead of just "winging it" which never works for me. Here's to an even more successful month than July (was for me)!

joazel - :welcome: aboard, some of us post daily with updates, others less frequently, whatever keeps you on track! Have fun and let us know how you're doing.
Cmo4 - Well at least you didn't get a black eye! Those things can be used as weapons after kids, wow! Glad you made it out alive and incline workouts rock, I'm trying to find a way to work those in somewhere.
Shrinking - I know how you feel about the public thing, I started running somewhere b/w 205 and 208, after losing 20lbs. I only got up early in the morning to do it so that no one would see me and that was six or seven weeks ago. I still wrap a hoodie around my waist so that I don't feel like the world is looking at my butt but now I realize that it's something a lot of ppl wish they did and giggly bits or not it's empowering to do it. Now when ppl drive by I just run faster so it looks better, lol, how times change.
MsP - Those are some awesome goals, gonna be working hard.
WEEK 1
August 1 - HIIT Week 5 Day 2, 28 minutes; Circuit Training CORE 60 minutes
Goal: Non-vacation days, workout twice a day, with two days off
Vacation days, run 5 days, strength training 4 days

Um, I'm not on the master list for some reason. My post *was* short.
August challenge: 1500 minutes.
I think I'm too young here to have a ticker, but this is how it's going:
August challenge: 120/1500
Minutes to pay off bike: 555/6000

Since last week, I've been away from home - eating terribly and for some reason not following through at all on exercise :o
But August is a whole new month!
Goal: 3.5 hr cardio & 1 hr strength/week + stretching every day
Actually, the way the weeks fall, this weekly goal isn't really making sense to my any more (I plan my weeks starting with Monday). So if anyone cares, I am going to change to monthly goals of:
930 minutes cardio & 265 minutes of strength (sounds random but that is what an hour a week for a 31-day month equals) and still trying to stretch every day...
Aug 1: ~30 min. swimming
Aug 2: 20 min. 30-day Shred (ouch!)
--------------------------------------------
TOTALS:
50/930 min. cardio
10/265 min. strength
1/31 15-min. stretches
joazel
08-03-2009, 05:10 AM
So far:
1/8 - 0
2/8 - walking 40 minutes
3/8 - line dancing 60 minutes
880 - 100 = 780 cardio to go
No stretching so far.
Not been here long enough to be eligible for a ticker.

Hi!
The first three days of AUgust have been ok for me - I've walked home from the tube each day, but am yet to get on my bike.
I'm very interested in all of you doing the C25K - I'm thinking maybe my excersise goal for Sept?
For now, I've just seen the ad for the new Nintendo DS gamey thing, where you get a pedometer and upload your daily info into your DS. It does calorie counting as well... I'm thinking I really really want it - I already have a DS.
Shrinking Girl
08-03-2009, 09:11 AM
Well everyone, I did it!
Week 1 Day 1 of C25K accomplished! It was a LOT easier than I anticipated it would be. My zune (or the podcast) even glitched out and I ended up running 2 60 second segments in a row with no break and I'm pretty sure it was longer than 2 minutes that I ran.. he never told me to stop running and pretty soon he was like "well it's time to run again" and I said WHAAAAAT!!! and then decided to give it a go.
I know I said I only wanted to do it twice a week but that seems silly now when it's designed for 3x a week. I was just scared before.
And... while it was done in public, we do have a park here with a fantastic track and I only had to deal with one other runner and 2 fishermen. Not horrible.
I feel so great!
I can't seem to find the names of the others who were going to start C25K this week. Gah! How did you do???
My Minutes:
8/1: 32 min Wii Fit, 70 min walk, 18 min bike (4 miles)
8/2: 33 min walk/run (C25K W6 D2), 60 min walk
The walk last night was to relieve the discomfort of overeating. I took the anniversary celebrating a touch too far and paid for it...UGH!!
I also didn't get to buy my akle weight yesterday since the sporting goods store was closed, so we're buying it today and I'm doing the st'ing tonight. Good luck to everyone today!

By the way....what is HIIT?
It's "High Intensity Interval Training" which is a fancy term for what a lot of us do naturally, anyway:
For example on treadmill:
5 mins warm-up
30 seconds at full intensity (sprinting)
1 minute recovery (walking)
repeat for around 6 intervals
5 mins cool-down
Workouts are shorter, but you make huge gains in fitness in a relatively short period of time. And you burn more calories. Not recommended everyday as it's very taxing and requires some recovery between sessions. Google it! Lots of great info on how to get started:) Actually experts recommend you don't start on the treadmill because if you push yourself as hard as you're supposed to, and you aren't as comfy on the treadmill, you could fall. Exercise bike is another option, or just running outside. I love it and have increased my fitness and Vo2 max dramatically since starting a few weeks ago, but I think I overdid it a little because my knee is killing me. :dizzy:

Okay ladies, so I have this crazy idea. I mean, seeing as how so many of you are doing two workouts a day and all...I was thinking about giving the 30 Day Shred another go and not just adding to my ST'ing days, but doing it every day (minus my day off maybe). Is that too much? Will I be giving my muscles enough time to recoup if I do it every day? I'm thinking since it's not an insane workout I should be fine, but I dunno--what do you think?

I'm going to meet my goal of 1395 minutes for the month of August!!

:dizzy:
OK - Thanks, I actually have workout programs on my treadmill that do this. They change the speed and incline. I usually do this about every 3rd day of exercise.

Phenomenal woman.....never too late to start, absolutely never! THe day and the moment we start exercising and working on making us a healthier us is golden! NIce to see you over here and glad you joined in :) WIfeyyy, yayy..wb...HOpe we have more time to get acquainted this month. Here is to a great month for us all! :)
OUr exercise thread and our girls and team memebers in it, has helped me and all of us to hold ourselves accountable. We really keep each other going and inspire each other to do our workouts. We all have different fitness levels, different ages, different amouts of time, different pressure points....etc. etc. but what is really neat is that here we help keep each other going on our own individually tailored programs! Post your minutes when you can, evn if you did nothing that day. IT really helps. Again , I thank you chicks for helping pull me back in when I needed it most!!!!!!!

Delphi,, hi girl. How are you liking the DDR? THis fall w hen the weather cools and I am ready to incorporate some indoor workouts again...I am so interested in that workout! Keep me posted okay? Hope your day went great girl.
Sandye , Mystical...........I admire your spunk! Honestly, Ill cut right to the chase and tell you how i feel about it seeing you as you asked. Depends on your current physical state (how fit you are), your mental or psychological state, how much time you have right now, and how much pressure or to what point pressure is an advantage or disadvantage. It it so differere nt for all of us and that's why it'sssssss soooo hard to answer.
With me, I pretty much know the balance of how much I need to pressure or push myself and I need to set my goals high enough to make me strive but not so high that it backfires. THis varies too...according to my mindset at the time and so many other factors. THat's why! There are just so many personal factors and then current restraint factors ...etc. I think you are doing so great as you are .......one thing is for sure,,, keep on your current mode. HOw much do you add? how much pressure? and to what point? You know best on that one but I had a thought. I am wondering if you put something like...incorporate some 30 day shred workouts this month into your goals ...if this would suffice! IT takes some of the pressure off. You can try it and see how you feel.....yet again if you want more or if you thrive off the extra pressure, you could go full guns. Just a thought! Sandye your doing great........so great! Whatever you decide...you just give me a holler and I will make any adjustments necessary on the list. THink about it first. Hugs and hope you had a great day.
Tummygirl , woo hoo chicky.........hope your having a fabulous day! I love hearing about that HIIT and how it makes you feel. That's golden! :) :carrot::carrot: Keep on shining.

Hey girlies! Everyone is doing so great!!!! :carrot::broc::carrot:
ShrinkingGirl~ I loved it! Last week when I tried it I was pretty huffy and puffy towards the end--today not a bit! I'm thinking it's because I have had 2 days off of running (my day off is Sun and yesterday was Strength Training). Either way, I loved it! I can't believe I said I loved running!
FSA~ thanks hun! Ya know, I'm going to be totally honest. I don't think I've pushed myself as much as I could. I know I could workout out more than I have and be okay. The Body For Life program I have been doing says you only need to do cardio 3X a week 20 mins at a time. Okay, sure, but can I do more? I mean, would it hurt to do more? Nah! So I think, instead of taking the easy way out and just saying 'I'll just do my neat little 20-30 mins of cardio and call it good' I'm ready to say, 'Let's see what else I can do!! Bring it on!!' ;) And one way I can tell that I'm ready for it--the 30 Day Shred is a whole lot easier than it was back in May!:carrot: So I'm going for it! My only concern now is if it'll hamper my efforts to tone up my muscles?? It's not a crazy intense workout with lots of reps or anything like a ST'ing workout so I think I'll be okay...we'll see. :) Thanks again for the advice hun! I think I'll leave my goals as they are and just go with the flow. :)

Wow girls, we could power a whole city with all this activity! :D
So, today was a real test for me...and I sort of passed and sort of failed. First day back on "teacher schedule," which means leaving for work at 6AM! The plan was to wake up 30 mins earlier to get in some cardio, but instead I couldn't sleep AT ALL last night and felt exhausted in the morning. It was fun being back, but lunch was hosted by the school, and it wasn't pretty. I ate small portions, but Thai food (in Thailand, at least) is soooooo greasy--that or very, very, sweet. It was a minefield, I tell you. But the good news is that I know it was a one time thing; I'll be bringing my own lunch all year! And I headed straight down to the gym when I got home.:carrot:
Hopefully I'll be able to sleep tonight and wake up earlier to exercise tomorrow!
August 2nd: 40 mins of walking/jogging/running on treadmill
August 3rd: 20-min jog in the park with a friend AND 35 mins of walking/jogging on treadmill AND 20 mins of strength training.
August 4th: 30-min walk on treadmill at 3.5 mph. Taking it slow. AND 10 mins of light quad and hamstring exercises.

Today is my biking/miscellaneous day, so I'll get to that in a bit. The calf cramp I had was not of "charlie horse" magnitude. I probably would've stopped to massage it and stretch if it had been. I was a milder type that felt like it was either gonna turn into a charlie or go away. Thankfully it went away. My legs are being required to get strong with all the running and biking, but I'm loving the results. The biking is still a challenge as I just re-started with that basically a week ago. I'll just slowly increase my distance on that each week and hope for the best!

NSM~ I'm calling you out hun! How are you liking the EA Active 30 Day Challenge so far? I've been doing the 30 Day Shred and just today thought, 'hmmm...perhaps I should ditch it and do the 30 Day Challenge instead--I bet it's not the same workout day after day after day...borrrrring!'. So, is it fun? Is it a good workout? Dish chickie! :)

08-05-2009, 03:05 PM
LOL Sandye.
I was just thinking of doing 30 DS.
I still like the EA. it's a different workout everyday, Somedays it focuses more on upper body, sometimes lower body, there's jogging drills and sports. It does have lots and lots of lunges though.
I like the fact that it's always positive with the feedback unlike the Fit.
I also like that it has a progression from day 1 where it basically builds up on itself and it gets progressively more intense.
Like I said before, the band is quite soft and does not offer very good resistance, so you probably have to buy a stronger one (I did after my first couple of workouts).
I like also that it's short, not much longer than 30 min. when doing the high intensity one, which basically means more reps of everything.
I know Delphi hates it, but the only way for you to know is to try it yourself and decide.
iDream
08-05-2009, 03:17 PM
NSM~ Haha! I just saw your post on the other thread! ;) So, which level are you doing? Beginner or higher? And you are doing the Challenge right? Or are you just doing a different workout everyday? I have some other bands that came with an exercise ball, maybe those would be better? I was just thinking that after a while I'm going to get sick of hearing Jillian's voice saying the same thing day after day ya know? And I knew that with the EA it's a different workout everyday so it would be less mind numbing. Hmm...perhaps I'll try it today instead of the shred. Thanks for the info hun! Let me know if you decide to do the shred and what you think of it! :)

Okay, I just finished the 1st workout of the challenge at medium intensity--hmm...not much of a workout when you factor in all the short 'show me how' videos  I'm sure once they're done it'll be more of a consistant workout right? Tell me I'm right. ;) I didn't know how the band was supposed to go into the strap thingie so I just sort of held them--only after I finished did I figure it out. I was laughing my butt off at the skating! :lol3: Oh I was a sight! My landings were all wonky and wobbly!! I think I'm going to do it again tomorrow and see what it's like! I think I'm going to like the boxing part--I see many frustrations being let out during that workout! ;)

This week has been a whirlwind of crazy stuff. My eating has also been crap, due to my pseudo TOM (I still get the cravings and water retention, but no actual TOM) and a family health scare. I worked out today, and am so far on plan for today. One bad day turned into four, but I'm stopping it here! Back on plan starting now.

Sandye: Yes, the workouts become more streamlined once you've seen the instruction videos once, so just bear with it, they will go away. You'll also get some nice surprise videos when you reach certain goals which I kinda liked, you'll see..
With the wonky computer I forgot to update my minutes yesterday:

Yay! Met my goal again today! I did 25 minutes of swimming/water aerobics and 36 minutes of wii fit aerobics/muscle training!
dcapulet, wtg on a fresh start today :carrot::carrot: Hoping you get TOM over with and feel better and that all is okay with the little one.
Hi NSM and phenomenal woman, and all,,, wtg girls! :carrot::carrot:
I'm sleepy, going to do some sofa surfing tonight!!!!!! No swim today, I didn't get much sleep last night (though my sleeping has been good) and was wiped out! Good sleep is so important! I had a tough july (and part of june) with insomnia and hot spells, could of sworn I was going through perimenopause. Anyways..........that is gone, thank god! My sleep is back to normal and good thing...when one is tired like that it makes it difficult.
I feel like a good movie tonight...hopefully something good on. I did manage a walk with DH and am thankful for that. We went along the river and oh the flowers are just so pretty. Have a great night girls and I will see you all tomorrow. :)

Wow! A week gone already! We're all doing a fantastic job!!!!
I decided to sit out my extra workout yesterday--I'm glad now that I didn't make it an official goal to work out twice a day. ;) I just didn't have it in me and I figured I should give my muscles a chance to recover. I'm doing the 30DS for sure tonight though! And I'm getting a couple of exercise videos from Netflix soon so perhaps I'll do those on my cardio days--we'll see. :)
NSM~ thanks for the info on the EA 30DC--I figured they would drop the instructional part and get down to brass tacks sooner or later! ;) I'm looking forward to it!! But, like you, I might wait to start it Officially until next month, I'd like to do it from start to finish I think...we'll see. :)
Keep up the fantastic work ladies!!! You're doing GREAT!!!

I had a good first week and felt very comfortable with it except I may tweak things once I'm done with C25K. I'm feeling some tension in one calf every once in a while that I'm monitoring. I don't want any injuries, so I will stay on top of that. My planned rest day couldn't have come at a better time! Otherswise, I know I'm burning some good cals here and that rocks!

Sandye....Oh denise austin is my all time fav. butttttttt I didnt care for the new vids I ordered a while back....I absolutely still to this day love her old tapes...way old! (I got in fantastic shape with her vid called " the complete workout"). THat tape is an hour long and has a mix of low and high cardio plus calisthenics. THe fat burner was more low impact but the thing that annoyed me on tha tone is she would say " one more, just one more" and trick you!!!!!!!!!! lol

I did 50 minutes of Wii today. Yoga, Strenth, and some Cardio/Balance. I haven't done this in a while but decided to pull it out today and WOW!. I already have muscles tightening up. I may have to do some walking on my treadmill in a bit to just loosen up or maybe just take a bubble bath in my jaccuzi....LOL. The walking would probably be better!

Well, I'm doing fine on minutes but am not happy with my consistency. I got a whole bunch of minutes again today hiking but only walked one other day this week. :( Going to get my walks in day to day this week and look at a nice long bike ride next weekend. I don't have time to go for a long hike so I'll shoot for an hour or more on the bike.

Really not feeling motivated. My tape measure hasn't budged anywhere that I'm measuring (waist, hips). Hopefully I'm losing somewhere. It's discouraging to think I've been working out for almost three weeks and the only change is more energy and a spike in my sex drive (DH doesn't mind). I need an attitude adjustment. Wish me luck.

Bluefruitmomma, I think your doing great!!!!!!! Hang in there, you will see results! (in more ways than one), it takes time sometimes. It increases quality of living tremendously. One day awhile back (or many days perhaps) it just hit me how I could clean so much more without getting tired, carry up groceries easier, have more energy and able to do soooooo much more in general and not feel achy stiff, etc. That in itself is a super reward, feeling better, more limber........more alive, etc. Hang in there and keep at it! :carrot::carrot::carrot: Good for writing too! IT's smart for us to reach out when we feel ourselves floundering or feeling that way ( sure has saved me a fe w times thanks to the chicks here) before it hits too hard. Keep up the awesome work! :carrot::carrot: :).

I had a *really* crappy day yesterday. My attitude was already cruddy, and then, yesterday morning, we got lab results back showing that DH not only has problems with gluten (we half expected this) but with dairy as well (he's the son of a dairy farmer for cryin' out loud!). Our favorite gluten-free baking mix, the one that I use as the base for most of our GF baking isn't dairy-free.
Anyways, yesterday was my day off. I did not overeat, but i didn't do any stretching/light workout that I planned on doing. I did get back on track today, but not at the intensity I usually do. I give myself props for doing it at all when I really just wanted to crawl back in bed and have a good cry. Actually, i think a cry would do me good.
So, in short. Still on track. I may be kicking and screaming inside, but I *am* still on track.
August challenge: 600/1500
And thanks, FSA, I *do* appreciate & rely on the support I get here. I can't do this alone.

Good morning girls....those workouts are looking great. :carrot::carrot::carrot:
BlueFruitMomma, sorry to hear about DH. I was just reading an article the other day about how common that gluten problems are. No dairy based products either ha? I'm sure you will find a substitution oh and the boards are a great place to look and ask around too. I was talking with a few friends online here last night and both have lyme disease and are so sick. It is very prevalent in our parts. I have a lot of deer on my propert and am always telling DH to becareful!!!!!! ANyways, your doing super with your minutes :carrot::carrot::carrot: Kudos to you for doing your workout even though you didnt feel like it. Sometimes I h ave to give myself a big push to do it but then am happy after I did it. Hmmm, regarding that cry sometimes we need to let it out. I hope you feel better, big . Everything will be okay, keep up the great work. Chat soon : )
girls, no time for my workout this morning. I am going to get ready and go over my parents for a visit. IT is cool and dry and may be cold for the swim. When I get back later today I plan on going for a walk with dh. I will get back to you this afternoon or evening regarding my minutes. Hope you all have a fantastic day.

Today is another day of delayed workouts. I wil be bike riding and walking this evening. I'm going to try the yoga dvd this morning and see how that goes. I may have to consider getting back into the routine of waking up earlier like some of you ladies and getting the workouts in before DH leaves in the morning. I did it yesterday and it was okay. I just didn't think about it today.
BlueFruitMomma (BFM)-Sorry to hear about your news. It is hard to cook with different food allergies. We were thinking of having my DH tested, but I almost don't want to know! SO glad you psyched yourself up to get some exercise in and kept your food under control. Those are major accomplishments in my book, so keep up the good work!

BlueFruitMomma - I know exactly how you feel, news like that really has a way of taking all the wind out of your sails. It's great that you didn't allow yourself to overeat in response to it! That takes a lot of willpower there! I hope you feel better soon, you've been doing great with your exercise goals so far.
I hope you can find some alternate solutions for the new dietary needs. Good luck to you and DH!

I did not love my dvd from the library today. The pilates (yesterday) one I may get eventually, because it would really challenge me, but the yoga chick today was not my type, if you kwim. I did a little over 15 min and then had to stop because I hated her style. No Love Connection there! I wish I had liked it because the exercises were decent and I felt the core muscles working, but she drove me nuts! Oh well, that's why I TRY them first. I'm picky I guess, but why not be if I gonna try to watch/do the dvd on a regular basis.

SG~ Hey girlie, just wanted to let you know what the ol' HRM said during my workout this morning! According to the HRM, I burned 285 cals during the 34 mins and 46 seconds I was working out. I did the standard fast paced walk for 5 mins and after the intervals I kept up the fast paced walking for the 5 min cool down with a slow paced walk for 2 mins after that. Just for the heck of it, here's the stats from the HRM:
Duration: 34:46, Time Spent In Zone (the target HR zone) 19:45, Avg HR 142, Max HR 184, Cals 285
Odd, I really didn't feel like I was pushing myself and yet the HRM alarm (that signals when you're under or over your target HR) was going off every time I ran because I was over 156. I might have to tweek my settings a bit and see if I've my target HR set correctly...I'm so new to this stuff I have no idea! Anyway, there ya go!! :) Have fun on W2D2 if you haven't done it already!!!

Another hour in on the Wii Fit today.....am hoping to try Turbo Jam again later today (EDIT: Got in 45 mins). Realized I really gotta keep at to catch up since I started this challenge a week late and then left for a few more days!
Scale was down 2 more pounds today since last Sunday! :carrot:
Thanks FullSteamAhead! I think the Wii is my saving grace, lol. With a little one in tow 24/7 now, and the stroller still at the old house, working out is a little more of a challenge! But she has fun doing the Wii with me, or at least she can play with toys while I do it. I started out just doing the balance games last year, and then it sat for literally the rest of the year, but now I am doing everything from the strength training to aerobics. I try to do the things that are still hard for me and have done the whole island run the past few days ago...which since I avoided running like the plague before is saying something!
