Weight Loss Support - Help! Wedding dress barely fits

View Full Version : Help! Wedding dress barely fits

07-20-2009, 11:12 PM
I'm getting married in 12 days and I tried my dress on (I got it on ebay a while back and it fit great) and now I can zip it up just barely and I have major back fat hanging over the back (It's a halter style, but pretty much looks strapless in the back)
Anyways, I NEED to lose a size in 12 days.
So my question to you all is, What's the best diet/exercise to do in this short amount of time?!
I have lost weight in the past (South Beach, calorie counting) and I exercise at least 4 times a week (jogging and fitness DVDs), but obviously I'm also good at gaining a lot of weight in the past. I need a kick in the rear, if you know what I mean!
What works best for you guys? Help!

Disclaimer: I know that the only "safe" way to lose weight is by losing 1-2 pounds a week, I get that. But to me, this is the only acceptable time to crash diet. My wedding pictures DEPEND on it!!!

So my question to you all is, What's the best diet/exercise to do in this short amount of time?!

Jillian Michaels has a great book and accompanying fitness DVD - 30 day shred. You don't have quite 30 days, but you have enough time to see some results. I recommend you check it out!

Dress size? I don'tknow. I did the cabbage soup diet for a week and lost 8 pounds. I didn't eat anything but the cabbage soup and sugar free jello. That was a lot, a lot of water weight, but not a dress size?

07-20-2009, 11:32 PM
I would probably go through the 30 Day Shred. I know a lot of women who lost weight FAST doing it.

07-20-2009, 11:38 PM
I'm going to third the advice for the 30 Day Shred.

In general, you should definitely add strength training, and probably kick up your cardio some too. (We may have different body types but I build muscle WAY fast and that's what I would do...too bad I haaaate strength training.)

07-20-2009, 11:53 PM
Funny thing is, I've been doing the 30 day shred (Mostly through level 2) about every other day for the past month (I haven't been doing it every day) and I'm scared about going to level 3 cause level 2 is so hard! Anyway, I know I need to step that up and just bite the bullet.
Also my diet has been atrocious. I am a firm believer that weight loss is 80% food-related and 20% exercise. I can't control what I put into my mouth!

07-21-2009, 12:00 AM
There is a book written (before the videos came out) by Jillian with a full diet plan to accompany the 30-day Shred. The book might give you guidelines for eating.

Cut your sodium!

07-21-2009, 12:09 AM
Sodium, yes! Thank you. I am probably going to go the low-carb route but knocking down sodium will help tremendously!
And thanks for recommending the book. I'll check it out.

07-21-2009, 12:13 AM
You might want to consider having a tailor let it out as a plan 'B'. I'm sure you can make lots of improvements to diet and exercise in 12 days but it might be tough to lose an entire size. It would be for me, anyway!

Good luck and best wishes on your upcoming marriage!

07-21-2009, 12:13 AM
I can't control what I put into my mouth!

You can't control how much weight you can lose in 12 days but you most certainly can control what you put in your mouth. In fact, that's the only thing you can control, other than exercise, for the next 12 days. A size in 12 days isn't impossible but it isn't really realistic either...totally not trying to be a downer, I promise. Can you diet, exercise and also have the dress altered, fast? Best of luck and don't let your dress keep you from having a perfect day, OK?

07-21-2009, 12:21 AM
Ah, a tailor! I was hoping nobody would mention that! It's ok though. I'm definitely keeping that in mind. If by next Monday the dress doesn't fit any better I'm going to have it taken out. I know my commitment to the weight loss is only going to work so far... But! i'm not going to let that plan B cloud my determination to at least debloat before then!

07-21-2009, 01:19 AM
Oh, for sure--get as healthy and trim as you can! But I would hate for you to feel self-conscious in your wedding pictures if it's just a matter of having someone let it out an inch or so, as well. We want you to feel happy and confident in your gown! :)

07-21-2009, 02:24 AM
You've been given great advice! :) Just wanted to congratulate you on your upcoming nuptials! :val2:

- 30 Day Shred - but be careful if you are low carbing . . . I love low carb but cant work out with great intensity when I am eating low carb . . .

- Low low low low low carb - and leaner foods if possible - think Stillman's.
Although I need veggies so I would still add them in and do a lean protein Atkins induction

- Low sodium

- Loads of water

- Some massage time if you can to caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalm you down and keep you happy in the lead up :)

Good luck! Check back in and let us know how you are progressing!

Oh boy the big day! It's exciting! I remember how fun it was to stay the same size for my dress too XD

I thought I would tell you a day of food I eat, I lost 10 lbs in 6 days because I made a major difference in what I eat along with Jillian's 30 day shred.

Breakfast: Oatmeal (unflavored) steel cut oats - 1/2 cup with a little no sugar maple syrup, light - all of this is around 180 calories and filling.

Snack: banana and vitamins (ladies one a day and flax seed oil)

Lunch: 2 slices whole wheat bread (50 cals per piece) lettuce, hummus (the 50 calorie per 2 tablespoons kind in red pepper - sprouts supermarket) pickles, raw mushrooms. Make a sandwich :D This should be around 250 calories.

Snack: purple grapes - 1 ounce 110 calories and 1 ounce of cheddar cheese ( about the size of your thumb) 110 calories (varies on cheese type) and water

Dinner: fresh broccoli cut up into pieces, place in pan with a little bit of water, carrots and raw mushrooms sliced and thrown into pan with brocc, turn heat up to cook veggies until they are bright and tender (may need to add more water if it all evaporates too fast. Chop 1 ounce of firm tofu into little cubes, add to the veggies to warm. Last put your favorite stir fry sauce on veggies (I use iron chef general Tso sauce) and make sure to measure out the sauce. :) This is usually around 270 calories for me.

Snack: strawberries (around 20 cals a cup)

Fit in lots of water between meals. If you remove all other drinks that is cutting out a crap load of unneeded calories (unless you want a 1/2 cup of milk or something, that's okay)

Do the shred everyday, you'll make a difference. I also find that reading success stories boosts motivation.

:) Good luck on your big day!

07-21-2009, 02:01 PM
Thank you all for the great advice!:) I am bound and determined to make this a healthy experience and hopefully a jumping off point for a lifelong of healthy eating.

I will definitely keep you posted on my progress!!

07-21-2009, 03:13 PM
Cut out dairy and sodium until after the wedding. Both will bloat you.

07-21-2009, 04:14 PM
Don't be afraid of Level 3. It's not as bad as you fear. It's mostly totally different from Level 2 rather than just building on it. Or at least that's how I find it.

Good luck!

07-21-2009, 04:24 PM
Have you thought about having one of those wraps that guarantees to shrink inches off all over?

If you have comcast digital...you can get the 30 Day Shred on their free ON DEMAND menu under fitness!

Just a thought!

Boy, it sounds to me like it would be hard to lose a size in 12 days without doing something drastic (though I am more than happy to be wrong here!)

Do you want to enjoy your wedding day?? If that's important, it might make sense not to do anything drastic that might cause you to not be able to enjoy the day, and just have the dress let out a bit.

I totally agree with this. I would suggest looking in having the dress altered if there is time.

07-21-2009, 07:14 PM
I agree...there is not many options except to cheat, lie , steal your way into that dress..except to let it out. It will be hard, I can't say I would NOT try all of my options if I were you.

ok, definitely lower your sodium intake. A water pill would get rid of lots of retained water. ONLY a few days before the big day. Why would you start that now? Also it might sound yucky..but a good colon pill--would probably whittle your waist as well. This will only work if you need some breathing room in the waist of the dress--probably won't help in the back.

definitely cut your carbs--I have heard of atkins inductions with losses of 10 lbs before. I don't know about inches though. lbs aren't going to do you any good really. INCHES is what you are looking for. maybe eat carbs only at dinner?

so cut your carbs, I don't think a dexatrim would hurt you a day or two before the wedding as long as you stay hydrated..and DON'T LOCK YOUR KNEES. keep them bent.

Don't eat ANYTHING that could potentially bloat you 2 days before the wedding. And I sure hope it won't be that TOM...you know AF can be though...

I don't recommend ANY of these for a healthy lifestyle. Well, the water pill is helpful during TOM and the colon cleanse is helpful once a month. But not long term.

I know my suggestions are bad..so don't yell at me. I'm just trying to help reach THAT goal of the dress.

07-21-2009, 11:15 PM
I totally agree with what all of you are saying. I messed up and didn't watch my weight due to the stresses of planning the wedding (I was hoping the stress would have had the opposite effect, go figure) and so I didn't think I would have a problem. Well I may have to resort to letting the dress out. Either way, I'm not going to fall into the mentality that I have to fit the dress. The dress has to fit ME. That sort of thinking is what has given me problems in the first place.

I made my fiance come over and "De-carb" my cuboards." He was more than willing on taking the chips and cereal off my hands. I'm planning on doing something like Phase 1 of South Beach.

Question: One of you said that I should cut out dairy, because it bloats you. Well a big part of low carb diets is LF cheeses and yogurts, etc. Am I really supposed to only eat meat, beans, and vegatables? I need my cheese!

07-21-2009, 11:19 PM
Drink a lot of water. Every time you feel hunger try to drink a cup or two of water. This will help curb your hunger. Also, have you tried sprinting? If you can run really quickly for say, 50-100 yards, then jog for 200 yards or do a brisk walk, then sprint again. Continue this pattern for about 3-5 miles. Start out doing it every other day and then increase to doing this routine each day. This should keep your metabolism guessing and cause irregularity which should lead to at least a more rapid weight loss than you are currently experiencing. Hope this helps :-)

You still have time to see big results, you just have to be agressive.

For the next week and a half, you need to really commit to a clean, 100% clean diet. No preservatives, processed, added sugars, packaged foods. You will have a hayday at your wedding dinner, so consider that a "cheat meal" to look forward to. Oats with protien powder for breakfast, tuna for snack, chicken/veggies/sweet potato for lunch you get the idea. 5-8 liters of water per day, and, go to the pool! Go swimming, soak in the hot tub. When you workout, sweat like crazy, and on the day of your wedding, keep your hydration up, have some non-bloat foods like raw nuts, chicken breasts, scrambled egg whites, etc.

These aren't crash diet suggestions either, just some ideas to de-bloat for the big day! You can lose big water weight, which WILL make a difference in the fit of the dress.

07-22-2009, 03:36 PM
I agree...there is not many options except to cheat, lie , steal your way into that dress..except to let it out.

AKA - Get you some Spanks and some crisco and slip your way in! :dizzy:

A wedding dress is suppose to fit tight. Breathing is optional.

But really, don't worry about it. You've already done really well losing weight! (From what I can see on your weight ticker!)

The ultimate plan B! Photoshop. :) Retouch them back shots and don't worry about it! Have fun!

07-22-2009, 03:55 PM
I lost the most weight, the quickest during phase I of the southbeach diet. I find when I cut out mostly carbs, I can drop at least 5 lbs in about 2 weeks.
That's what I use when I need to drop a few lbs, fast.

07-22-2009, 04:05 PM
Do whatever will cause you the least stress. If agressive dieting is going to cause you extra stress - it's really not worth it. If you don't find that it adds to the stress then go for it. Weddings are enough to drive anyone crazy - make putting your dress on as easy as possible. You need to ENJOY your wedding.

07-23-2009, 12:04 AM
I would enjoy this time and do what you can for the least amount of stress possible. I wish you well in losing a dress size in 12 days, but to put your mind at ease you may want to go see a seamstress to alter it a few inches. Best of luck and enjoy the day!!

07-24-2009, 05:04 AM
At this point, altering is too late unless you know someone in the family or a friend who can do it asap. Tailors are usually fully scheduled because weddings happen year round. My dress alterations took a month, but you may get lucky.

07-24-2009, 08:34 AM
Maybe you could do plan a and plan b have the dress altered and do the diet execise plan. that way you could breathe in your dress and not have ALL the extra STRESS this next week you have enough with pre wedding stuff HAPPY WEDDING GIRLFRIEND ENJOY hopefully you only do once!

07-24-2009, 12:35 PM
how's it going so far? What did you decide. I agree finding an alterer might be pretty tough unless you have a friend that does it! keep us updated!
