Oriana, try to incorporate more veggies at lunch, not just lettuce. Are you using any good fats (Canola oil, olive oil, avocado, nuts or SF nut butters)? Your body needs them for proper nutrition and they may actually help reduce abdominal fat. You also need a more substantial breakfast. An egg (no veggies or cheese) is not going to keep you full for long. The beans are good, but I don't see any dairy (milk or yogurt). I would stay away from the jerky. Some have corn syrup or other sweeteners and too much saturated fat. Try to keep snacks in your purse like almonds or peanuts. Being prepared is key on this food plan, so you have to stay one step ahead of your hunger.

I am back at it. I decided to wait until July 5th to officially begin PI. Need some groceries. My dh  will be joining me this time as his method for getting his blood sugar under control hasn't been working and his doc is threatening insulin.

I am so ready to get my eating under control again and start losing more weight.

Wishing all the July starters good luck. We can do this. :carrot: Guess I better change my ticker.

Thanks Anne, I will do better tomorrow! BTW, have you lost all your weight on SB?

I actually lost weight on Weight Watchers many times over but always regained it. Weight Watchers wasn't taking the weight off anymore, so I tried SB and lost 25# on it. I've never been able to maintain such a low weight before SB. Been maintaining for over a year now.

Hi ladies! I've decided to get back "on the beach" before I head "to the beach" for vacation. Started phase 1 on Sunday and forgot how good it feels to plan out your meals and eat on plan, instead of 'winging it' and hoping you don't get caught up in an evening full of munchies....

I'm starting to feel sluggish/flu like today - like it's hard to keep my eyes open and my head keeps wanting to lay itself down :) I know it's temporary. Can anyone let me know how long this feeling lasts? I appreciate your feedback!

I just had the "SB flu" for one day. It's recommended to eat more beans and dairy to offset that effect.

I re-started the beach today and was successful. However, I had to take a nap at some point during my busy day to be able to function for the rest of the evening. I can attribute a part of that to not being able to sleep well last night.

It really feels good to follow a menu. Having the foods available and prepared makes a huge difference. I so need to have this structure to make a dent in my weight loss efforts. :)

I've been having such an issue with staying completely clean on Phase 1. I know it's crucial to stay clean so the last few days I've been cheat free. :?:However, I can't get over the tired feeling (I know it'll last for a few days) and I actually feel "fatter". I refuse to weight myself since I don't want to feel discouraged. Has anyone else felt this way?:stress: My daily meals consist:

Breakfast: "Faux oatmeal" (recipe in breakfast phase 1)
Snack: 4 slices of turkey with 1 slice of cheese
Lunch: Spinach lettuce with tuna on top w/ 1/2 cup garbanzo beans
Snack: 4 slices of turkey with 1 slice of cheese
Dinner: Egg white omelet with turkey pepperoni and 1/4 cup of 2% Kraft shredded cheese...I also had a "milkshake" using 1 cup of fat free milk, 2 cups of ice, 1 scoop of EAS 100% Whey protein powder
Sweets: 4 SF candies and 1 SF Fudgsicle...I also had a couple pieces of gum throughout the day

I feel like I'm doing it all right, but my body doesn't feel like it. I feel a little bloated (maybe the deli turkey?) and actually feel "fatter"....any advice? Should I just stick with it and wait to see if this feeling goes away?:bomb:

I felt fatter on P1. I think part of it is that we are so focused on our body.

Opening a pathway for a healthier way of life. I posted last week that at 9 weeks I finally could look in the mirror and see a difference. I started feeling better much earlier. Stick with it! I have heard around here that a clean P1 is essential. I believe the reason I am craving free is because I don't eat anything not on plan.

It's Day 3 of my Phase 1 re-start. So far so good. I can tell the SBD Flu is trying to get me but it seems to have the counter-effect in which I'm having a touch of insomnia. My body is happy that it's getting healthy again. I can already feel the difference but this lack of sleep is the worse today.

B: The other 1/2 of the mushroom/asparagus omelet from yesterday, sugar-free yogurt and a less-sodium V-8.
S1: Part-Skim Mozzarella cheese
L: Leftover Taco Salad & sugar-free Jell-O
S2: Celery with Laughing Cow Light cheese
D: Turkey Sausage Stir-Fry and a tossed salad.
DS: Lime Zest Ricotta Creme'

I had a pretty busy schedule in the morning. To make sure I stay accountable, I'm going to make the Vegetable-Quiche-Cups-to-Go tonight so they'll have all night to set well. These are a hit with my kids. It's much easier for me than they realize. ;) I'm also going to make the turkey roll-ups as well. They taste so much better to me the day after. I plan to make it home for lunch but may pack it just in case.

Staying ahead of the game keeps me on the right track. :)

Wishing you all the best! :)

This is day 2 of my SB Diet.

Breakfast- 2 slices canadian bacon, 2 SF Jello Cups (purchased made)
Lunch-2 cups of salad/ whatever that purple stuff is they put in salads?? it was really mild, just crunchy. then 2 chicken breasts chopped in the salad.
That's it so far... I am having a hard time eating enough.

I am getting cashews (for my healthy fats), and i'm going to TRY cauliflower and some other veggies sometime this week. I hope to have all of my different spice combos ready for my chicken (since that's the only meat I eat besides the occasional pork) and then I will hopefully be eating more often. I know that I should have more mini meals, and believe me, I want them! But, it's just I haven't had the supplies as of right yet. Tonight will be my prep night and tomorrow I will hopefully be able to have 4-5 mini meals. It's been really hard for me just in two days because I am not used to eating any veggies at all (this includes salad) and I am a complete carboholic. But that's also why I know I need to stick to the first two weeks to get over these cravings I have had literally my whole life. Alright, I am headed for the grocery store, going to get some chickpeas & roast them as suggested :) Thanks for everyone's support!

Good job Abbey! That purple stuff is red cabbage..I'm a carb freak too! I'd eat so much cereal, bread, oatmeal...EVERYTHING! I promise that those pangs will subside...myfamily never thought they'd see the day that I'd give up my bread and cereal but I've gotten to a point where I don't even miss it honestly...it's pretty weird!

Have you tried steaming an artichoke? They're mild but yummy. I'm REALLY thankful that Glad and Ziploc came out with steaming bags...all you have to do is throw your veggies in there, seal it, and stick it in the microwave for a few minutes...makes it SUPER easy :D

It's been really hard for me just in two days because I am not used to eating any veggies at all (this includes salad) and I am a complete carboholic.

Your menus look really shy on veggies. The 4 1/2 cups a day are essential to this way of eating. If you're not used to eating veggies, salads are a great way to start, but you need to add stuff to the lettuce, like carrots, red onion, celery, radishes, cucumbers, mushrooms, peppers, etc. There are so many veggies that are delicious raw. I now love steaming my broccoli and cauliflower too. These foods are full of nutrients and add bulk to your diet. I really think the quantity is key to this diet. Most of us try to get 1/2 cup at breakfast and 2 cups at lunch and dinner each. Also remember to try to get 2 cups of dairy a day.

Hey everyone. This is my first time posting in the SB forum, though not my first time trying the diet! I dropped about 25 lbs a year ago just in Phase I, and kind of forgot about sticking to Phase II...and consequently and steadily gained about 10 of it back over the months. I'm really invigorated to be back on it!

Today is day 2 of Phase I for me. Something interesting I've noticed is that I feel a lot hungrier this afternoon than I did yesterday. Compare my meals:

Yesterday -
B - egg white & baked tofu scramble with shredded sharp cheddar; coffee w/ half & half
S - Laughing Cow lite swiss wedge
L - chinese chicken salad with vinaigrette (cabbage, etc. as the greens)
S - 20 whole unsalted almonds
D - salmon fillet w/ wasabi & lite mayo, green salad, diet root beer

Today -
B - 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1/4 c. nut/dried cran mix; coffee w/ hazelnut creamer (not sugar free!)
S - LC lite swiss wedge
L - leftover salmon & salad
S - about 30 almonds
D - (I'm planning to have grilled chicken and salad with avocado for some good fat)

And right now I am WAY hungrier than I was yesterday at this time. Could it be because my breakfast was not as substantial today, or because I had that sugary creamer in the morning with my coffee? What should I be adjusting with this basic template of a menu?

Thanks :)

07-09-2009, 10:08 PM
Snoozle, the flavored creamer with sugar is not only a no-no for the sugar but also bad fats. You're also over the allotment of nuts. You can have 15 almonds per day. I never felt hungry on Phase I. If you do, eat more, as long as you limit the fats, nuts, dairy and sweet treats. Make sure your cheese if FF or low fat and eat more veggies. See my post above yours.

Thanks Anne. All I'm going off of for SB is the audiobook of the doc who created the diet reading part of his book or notes. I love it cuz I'm understanding all of the reasoning and physiology behind the diet, but I'm not being extremely scrupulous about the details. I guess I really ought to get the book if I'm going to try and do it by the book ;-) (or at least read up more on specifics...for example, I knew I might be over-doing it with the almonds today cuz I was hungry, but I didn't know I had a certain allotment!)

I need to bounce around on here and find where people have listed sample menus, etc.!!

BTW the creamer WAS fat-free, though I know that doesn't make it much better (it's that Coffeemate hazelnut ff stuff...luckily I had coffee at a friend's and I am not stuck with a giant bottle of it! no more of that junk for me!)

Snoozle, first of all :welcome: back to the Beach. The plan has changed since you were on it last, See the revised Phase I Food list in the FAQ. You now should be having dairy. I see no legumes in your menus either - both the dairy and the legumes will help kill the cravings and make you feel more satisfied. Check out the List for nut servings too. Evaporated tinned no-fat milk is a good substitute for the evil creamers!

So I've been REALLY good about staying clean on phase 1 so far..I've probably had a few too many nuts but other than that, I've been good...until yesterday...

I'm an emotional eater and a family crisis arose yesterday. All I wanted to do was eat some crackers, chocolate, and even a Poptart--which I NEVER liked before! As I stood there staring into the food porn collection :nono: in my cupboard, I thought about it again. I felt so icky when I was eating that bad food. Sure, it helped for a moment while on my lips but not in the overall picture. So I closed the cabinet, ate a SF Fudgsicle, and ran a hot bubble bath. :cp:I then came on here to read posts. I'm proud! =) Thanks for being here guys!

My friends are having a girls night out tonight. They're going to BJ's Brewhouse (they have all sorts of food...salads, pizza, sandwiches, pasta, steak, etc) and I don't know what to eat! I know it's not recommended to eat out while on Phase 1, but it doesn't look like an option tonight. I was going to have a grilled chicken Caesar salad (dressing on the side, of course!), but I'm sure the Caesar is filled with fat. I could always get a grilled chicken salad w/balsamic, but I'm not a huge fan of balsamic vinaigrette. I'll eat it, but I'd rather have something else if I could. =( I don't see that they have any light dressings either.

Can I have a turkey burger without the bun? Or is that worse than a regular hamburger without the bun?

Here's their menu (no nutritional values though :()
http://www.bjsbrewhouse.com/salads.aspx

Suggestions? :?:

Lexxiss
07-10-2009, 03:35 PM
I would have;
Cobb Salad, no croutons, no bacon, dressing on the side
Garden Medley Salad w/ chix or salmon dressing on the
side
or
Entrees
Roasted chicken, call ahead and see if you could substitute vegies for the potato
Atlantic Salmon, no rice

I don't hesitate to bring my own dressing. Its easy to be low key. I don't have a problem calling earlier to see if the chef could substitute vegies for a starch. I have a hard time with burgers, cause they go so well with fries, but maybe w/o bun they could substitute vegies as well.
I have a problem getting dressing on the side sometimes, so I tend to repeat that rather then be served a gooy gross salad that I am embarassed to send back.

My favorite spot will serve me an outrageous omelet in the morning with a side salad instead of potatoes and toast. Its really yummy.

You can do it because your planning ahead!! Have a great dinner!

So the girls and I went to Bj's and the wait was over an hour! so we decided to go somewhere else..yikes..they decided on "On the Border" which is a mexican restaurant....my downfall!

My friends felt bad because they knew I was on SBD and I had my meal already planned out for BJ's. I let them know that I'd figure something out. So we sat down and I scanned the menu....ok salad? possibly...ooooh fajitas! yum...then I saw that there was a Fajita Salad..yum! Best of both worlds! So I had a grilled chicken fajita salad...grilled chicken, guac and smoked jalapeno vinegarette on the side and no sour cream...I barely used my dressing and the salad was delish!

The hardest part? The chips they served before the meal. I LOVE salsa and chips. I kept thinking about WWCD (what would chicks do) lol...so I let my friends pig out on it instead and kept my hands on my lap lol. Changing my eating habits has really empowered me. I am SO proud of myself for declining temptations.

Good luck to everyone! We're almost done with Phase 1! Stay strong!

I think it is a real achievement to make a good choice, as you did, Kitty Kat. Chips and salsa are one of my most missed foods right now. But it is way more important to keep the SB chemistry going. Hands in lap-good call! It's nice to go out with friends who support you.

I made it through the first Saturday on my return to Phase 1!! :) And I did it without succumbing to the lure of weekend alcohol and/or wine. I usually cave in when hanging with my friends thinking I can drink a little here and there by using the "But it's the weekend." excuse. I had good old H2O all day. :)

I also made great food choices by sticking with my menu. I didn't give in and drive to the closest fast food restaurant. :)

I'm giving it a go again. I just had my last 2 glasses of wine for a while - ditto for cookies. I am doing babysteps over the weekend so Monday won't seem so bad.

I am going to select 3 breakfasts and 3 lunches and rotate those - I hate having to plan something new for every day. I will miss fruit :(

Goal is -3 lbs this week.

Congrats to everyone that's been pushing along :)

Today is the last day for my first week on p1. After reading some of the posts of many feeling tired and sluggish and not great, I have to say that I think this is the first week in quite a while that I've actually felt really good.

I am learning to adjust to my new lifestyle, but a big accomplishment for me was that I managed to eat smartly at two outings, and got some exercise in. I've not weighed myself yet, even though I have been *so* tempted !

Maybe this is a "honeymoon" stage lol, but I really feel good :D

I have felt so good the first week on p1, that I can't believe it. It's been so nice ! I weighed myself Monday, and was down 10 lbs for the week.

ruby--I'm scared to weigh myself! I don't want to be disappointed. I feel SO much better and I can see changes in the mirror so I'm going to stick with that until I get the courage to weigh myself.

I've kind of been noticing that I've been eating too many nuts and sf candies so I need to stop that. I had to get a root canal (yikes) and haven't been able to eat too much (I don't like soup) so I've been eating more jello, sf popsicles and fudgsicles...I know I'm only allotted 100 calories but I'd rather eat these than starve heh.

jandaman: You're not alone in re-starting this phase. Many of us have been down this road a million times. Thank God this is a plan where we can go back to basics when necessary. However, I've made a decision that this will be the last time I re-start due to me falling off the wagon. If I go back again, it will be just to do a little maintenance. I think once we make that decision, we'll see great weight loss and be able to enjoy our eating lifestyle. Welcome back and good luck! :)

ROSABELLA56: Sounds like you're off to a great start. Having kitchen time to prepare your meals makes a world of difference in our weight loss efforts. Good luck to you! :)

laaiqahm: I'm sorry you're feeling so miserable. Maybe you can post your menus to get a better feel for what you're eating. Hope you're feeling better soon. :)

Breakfast:

Snack 1:
Turkey Roll-ups

Lunch:
Salad with shrimp stir-fry leftovers
Sugar-Free Jell-O

Dinner:

Dessert:

laaiqahm- I agree with Sunshine...post your meal plans so we can see...

I felt the same way for almost a week...I still have a day every now and then like that though...I think it's because I have too much cheese during the day or the nuts that I eat...you could just be retaining water. Make sure you're drinking plenty off water. Post up your meal plan so we can figure out what it could be =)

Hi:sunny: I would try to turn this into a positive thing. The worse one feels, the more they are detoxing. That said you are having a positive experience in that you feel bad. Stay motivated and keep checking in! I felt fat for a long time. We didn't get here overnight and this is a huge opportunity to change for the better. I was up and down all week - I went to a funeral on Tuesday and ended up eating a few things I shouldn't have after at a luncheon. I did work out more this week and if I can keep up the momentum, I should be down again on Monday. I need to follow the plan more closely - I may do a few more days past 2 weeks. Down 1.5 - that's it - but again I am sure I am eating too much cheese and need to watch my oil/fats.

Good morning everyone! I am now on Day 2 of P1. I did very well yesterday. Dh is very supportive in my desire to lose weight, so that makes it easier to do this.

tyeralona - CONGRATS on you new little girl! I, too, am a mother of three. I have found some challenges with trying to make time for myself with the three little ones at home. I am slowly trying to make sure I find time for myself.

momofsteel - A loss is a loss. Keep up the good work and remember we all have slip ups, we just need to be sure to jump right back on the beach.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Please remember that weightloss isn't linear. We didn't gain it in two weeks so it will take a while with some blips up and down. The 8-13 pound loss in Phase I is for folks with a lot to lose and for those who have not been on diets before. Be patient, Chickies.

Almost done with day 2 here and suprisingly I survived. Today was a particularly rough day, I was feeling overly tired, cranky, and just in a rotten mood. Normally that would mean eating all kinds of crap. I almost caved...I had a handful of Skittles in my hand but then I decided to put them back and chew on a piece of sf gum instead. Not quite the same but it helped. I am now looking forward to my sf popsicle after I put the boys to bed.

Hi Kim!

Doing much better, mood wise, today.

Right now, I am eating a large vegetable salad with chicken and italian dressing. Mmmmm!

This afternnon, I will probably have celery with some laughing cow cheese and for dinner, I am making Sloppy Joes. DH and the boys can have it with hamburger rolls and I will take mine with an extra side of veggies.

Hope everyone has a GREAT day!

Hi guys - new here and to SB, I'm nearing the end of P1, on day 12 now. Wow! Have had a few bumps along the way, but am mostly doing really well. I'm pretty proud of how I've done so far. I've lost about 9lbs so far and am looking forward to more!

I don't know about you guys, but I find the weekends SO HARD to stick to it!!!! I caved last night and had a few taco chips/salsa and was surprised to find that they weren't even THAT good!! So not worth it, lol!!!! So onward and upward! :)

Hi all, hope you're having a nice weekend! I'm on Day 3. Days 1 and 2 were fine, but I think I overate, mainly out of rebellion, I think! But I only overate on things I was allowed -- veggies mainly. Anyway, I'm tring to be better today, but am still finding that the meal plan is calling for way more food than I am used to eating! Do I have to have the snacks? Can I skip them if I'm truly not feeling hungry?

Hi everyone! I posted the other day about wanting to "get back to the Beach." I'm here now and am happy to be journeying with others going through Phase 1.

I meant to do Phase 1 today but just before my workout at the gym, my husband brought me a 1/2 omelet for breakfast that had shredded potatoes mixed in. He is supposedly doing phase one with me! I tried to pick them out, but I know I ingested some... *forehead slap*

We also had Chicken Parm for dinner which I made with a very minimal amount of breadcrumbs. Do any of you know the stance of using breadcrumbs on Phase 1? I imagine it's a no-no...so I am planning to count tomorrow as my official Day 1.

Otherwise, it was a very easy day. I love SBD. You're never hungry, and the cravings slowly go away! I stocked up on some sugar-free candy just to be on the safe side. :)

Good luck chickies!

Yeah, DH knows potatoes aren't in the diet, we've done Phase 1 together before. He just ordered a certain omelet at IHOP not realizing there were hash browns in it.

Next time I make chicken parm in phase 1, I will just leave out the crumbs, however small a portion.

Today I will start off with some cottage cheese, celery and peanut butter. I got so sick of eggs for breakfast the first time around...I have to do them in moderation this time.

good luck everyone!

Kleo, I love potato in omelet but find adding zucchini, onions and red peppers is pretty tasty too.
Remember that there are lots of other choices for breakfast. Leftovers from dinner are just great. I've even had lentil soup in the morning - very comforting on cold days. Check out the breakfast threads in the recipe section.

The Taco Bake recipe from here is great reheated. I usually make extra chicken breasts so I have leftovers too. Chili is easy to make and lasts forever. Try making your chicken in the crockpot so it's done when you get home from work.

Welcome, brownie! Good luck with phase 1. I like your idea of a "kickoff" on the treadmill the night before you started!

Today is Day 3 for me...but day 1 had a couple of unintentional cheats so I might do phase 1 a day further if I can make it. So far, I'm doing okay. Although there is a beautiful nectarine in the kitchen right now, pleading for me to eat it.

I also worked out yesterday and the day before which I am feeling very good about!

After a breakfast of eggs this morning (blech - but DH made them) I was feeling a little depressed about my lunch choices, so I decided to treat myself to a Subway salad with black forest ham and oil and vinegar dressing. I could only get through about half - do you ever get salad fatigue about halfway through a big salad? - but it was so good...I'm saving the rest for tonight's dinner and I'll add some additional lunch meat to that one! It was just the thing to bring me out of my little rut.

I want to thank the person who suggested lentil soup for breakfast - I think I will try that tomorrow. I love lentil soup paired with a piece of string cheese!

More later, ladies -

I'm trying to get my DH to do it with me but he is a very picky eater. Doesnt like alot of the veggies on the list and cant do artifical sweetners. He is a pure sugar guy. He's tried a couple of different brands. Not a big cheese eater either. Anyway, when I showed him Phase II he is willing to start there. He doesn't have alot to lose so we will both be starting phase II on Monday. I have on P1 for 2 days and lost 1.8. Today is my 3rd day so I'm hoping to lose 3# more by sunday. Wish me luck but DH.

Thanks for the welcome, Kate!

I totally agree about 'salad fatigue'. You can chew only so many veggies before you're just done! I guess that's part of what makes it such a perfect food to lose weight with. I made a mexican chicken soup for lunches this week, and really enjoyed it today. I just didn't feel like a salad, even though it's 100 outside. It was tasty, filling, and didn't make me feel like I was starting a diet.

Great job with the working out!

Good morning, everyone!

I am curling up on this chilly summer morning with a nice bowl of lentil soup, a piece of cheese, and a glass of ice-cold cucumber water (perfect for when you're on diet drink overload).

I am also waking up early enough to go on a morning walk with DH and our son! I have to wake them up in 15 minutes if I don't hear a peep out of them before then. Yesterday, I woke up too late too do any exercise and didn't feel good about that. Vowing to make today a better day!!

Yesterday I also felt very dependent on cheese and artificially sweetened items. Definitely ate more than the allotted 75-100 cals worth and dairy limit. Well, the way I see it, at least I stuck with foods that were OP and wouldn't raise my sugar levels. So I'll just have to slowly wean myself off of these "withdrawal foods!"

Walthee, I wonder if DH would try Phase 1 for even just a few days to relieve some of those sugar cravings...then slowly build up the "good carbs" over a course of time like the book mentions. DH and I were so impressed with the "cleansing" power of phase 1...definitely less of a quick weight loss scheme and more a plan for breaking addiction. And for that reason I too would recommend more than just a week of Phase 1. But, even a week should get you a really good start. Just don't make the mistake I did and load on the good carbs too quickly in Phase 2.

Mexican chicken soup...that sounds good. I might have to make myself some of that now that we are having a cold spell here in the Midwest.

Tonight I have a potluck picnic with some colleagues. I am bringing a veggie tray and some deviled eggs so I know I can have something to eat along with the grilled meat. Bring it on!!

brownie - WELCOME! WELCOME! Mmmm! Mexican soup sounds delish! Is it easy to make?

walthree - I, too, am a picky eater. Your DH can make this work...it's only two weeks.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Thanks Anne-
I only need to lose 10# and decided to do SB from Atkins. SB looks to be a better choice for continued weight loss and may be easier to maintain as well. Since I'm coming off of Atkins I don't have the craving issue to get rid of. So I wanted to try at least one week in phase 1 just to rev me up a bit. I'm switching eariler b/c of DH. He wants to lose 20# but wont even try Phase 1 after reading the food list. I'm hoping maybe gradual loss for him may help so I'll try him on Phase II with me. My DH is a harder egg to crack.

My DH is very stubborn. He has to look and analyze everything. I have the book and read him passages. He looks at what is available and see if its doable from him. He is so picky and doesn't like a lot of veggies, doesn't each cheese, doesn't do FF - SF. It is really frustrating. I have been able to lose more weight than him b/c I can tolerate the changes and work with it. OOO but not him. Even if I make something that has splenda in it, it makes him sick. So I'm always trying to make something we both can eat. If we are both on P2 I can give him the same thing I make, I may need to change the veggies around in the recipes but that should be ok. Desserts will be a big problem. Is there anything out there that doesn't have to have the artificial sweetener in it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciate.

kleo
07-23-2009, 11:21 AM
Walthree,

Congrats on bucking your cravings early on...it sounds like one week of P1 will be a better situation for you and DH after all. I am sure that once you are able to plan the meals for the both of you things will go well!

I too would like some input on desserts that do not rely on artificial sweeteners. Dark chocolate is encouraged in Phase 2, it seems like you do some combination of chocolate and nuts. I also love fresh fruit and berries for dessert...seems like you could pair that with your chocolate and have that be a nice little fix!

I'd love to hear what other ideas people have...

Kate--I'm envying you your chilly morning! When i went out to get the paper this morning, it was humid and already pretty warm. I hope you enjoyed your walk.

Kristine- Thanks for the welcome! The mexican chicken soup is really easy and soooo good. I got the recipe from Pam Anderson's cookbook, The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight and Eating Great (Not the Baywatch Pam Anderson, the cookbook author) ;) It's not specifically SBD, but has some recipes that fit nicely and are really tasty.

Don't you love the first few days of a diet, where the scale goes down every morning? Good grief it was a nice motivator to see 2 lbs gone, just since yesterday. Makes it easier to stick with what I have planned on my menu for today, and hopefully it will help get me on the elliptical trainer this evening.

Have a great day!

I know what you mean about the first few days of a diet. I started phase 1 right after a sugar- and carb-laden vacation, so I have dropped really quickly. I have lost a solid 3 lbs in the past 3 days (well 5 because I ate fairly well for two days before re-starting)

It's great motivation for now while the cravings are still an issue!

kleo - what recipe do you have for lentil soup? I bought some lentils and have an idea of what I will do with them, just don't, know if it will be any good. I've never in my life done anything with lentils, I guess I really don't understand them LOL I intended on using crushed tomatoes, lentils, lean diced stew beef, onions, peppers and maybe some green beans in the crock pot.. does that sound like it would be any good? Hope you had fun at the potluck tonight.

Kristine - congrats on moving on to phase 2, are you doing it by the book or a modified version? Also congrats on the loss! WTG :carrot::carrot:

Walthree - I have a hard time getting my DH on board all the way with SB as well, he just needs more then he feels are options I guess. He did it with me the first time I did and he called his version "the half a$$ed SBD" regardless, he did lose some weight and was eating a LOT healthier.

Brownie - I too love seeing the scale move in the beginning, it moves quickly and it is just what I need to get my motivation pumping.

I'm trying my best not to stress about what day i'm on, but I'm having a hard time remember.. I think today is day 4, I jinxed myself and have a headache today so think it is a touch of the SB flu... no biggie, drank my milk and took a tylenol so all will be well. I'm still having some major cravings for chocolate and hope that it goes away soon. I haven't given in to it and don't intend to but I did find myself staring at some chocolate bars in the grocery store this evening. I'm also going to be at a decent time every night so that I can sleep off the late night snack attack that I usually have. I'm .5lb from being back in onederland, I never ever want to leave it again.. I 'think' i will be there tomorrow. (yes i'm a daily weigher)

Try the NSA fudgesicles or the Mocha Ricotta Creme recipe. They really help! You guys are all doing great! :D

Halo - I was eating canned lentil soup yesterday - Campbell's. I also like Progresso. I have to say, I think the canned lentil soups are really good.

My absolute favorite homemade recipe is Lentil Sausage Soup from The Barefoot Contessa and it has sausage in it. Not sure what phase it is compatible with, but you can find it on foodnetwork dot com, keyword "Lentil Sausage" (I can't post links until I reach 25 posts)

Don't be scared of lentils! :) They are sooo good. I also like the lentils and cheese recipe from Mollie Katzen. Basically, it is lentils baked with carrot, celery, onion, pepper, tomatoes, and then topped with a generous layer of cheese. I can't find that particular one on the internet though - if you are interested I can scan it and put it in the recipe file when I reach 25 posts!

Good luck!

Hi all -- congrats to everyone for their successes!! I'm mainly a lurker, but will pop in from time to time, need to be held accountable!

Weighed in this am after 1st week of Phase 1 -- 2.2 lbs lost! :carrot: I wish it had been more, but I was truly expecting to gain! I had "diet rebellion" the first few days and was eating WAY too much, even though OP food, just huge portions. I'm kind of getting in a groove now, so I'm glad that Week 2 is beginning today.

I'm in this for the long haul, so I'm OK with however long this takes! Happy Friday to all!

YAY Sunshine for moving on! CONGRATS on the weight loss! That is fantastic! Keep up the motivation in P2!

Thanks! :) You'll be here before you know it. :) Keep up the great work in Phase 1.

I am super excited.

Now my goal is to finally be below 200. Only 10 lbs to go!!

Congratulations! :)

Janet - I would love the recipe for mashed lentils.. as long as it is simple enough, i'm not even close to a great chef LOL

Friday is over, this is the place that I am holding myself accountable. I ate a chocolate bar today :( I'm not using it as an excuse to go all out on OP foods however. Should I make tomorrow day 1 all over again?

Halo,

What day are you on? Why not make the decision about going back to day 1 at a later date. Like, if you are already 4 days into it, finish out your 2 weeks and then ask yourself if you can go another four days (heck even take it a day at a time after that)

Of course 2 weeks is the best to reset your system from cravings, but I worry that people will eventually fall OP if they "punish" themselves for these little slip-ups.

Confession time for me is that I ate more than 30 pistachios just now and indulged in some sugar free pudding which you technically aren't supposed to have in P2. :( I am just starting to get discouraged today, but I am determined not to steer too far off course...

jandaman
07-25-2009, 08:39 AM
so. confession time still open? also ate orgainic bar of almond milk chocolate :(
but, yeah- halo i think kleo's advice is sound. lessee how this plays out.

will post recipe today now off to get my behind kicked by jillian (30 day shred)

hey cindiejo- don't sweat it..2 pounds is great!--as someone wrote somewhere inthis thread- consider how long it took you to put the weight on...phase one is not a miracle cure :)

So I'm a little frustrated.....

I was on Phase 1 and I had 2 days left to go and weighed myself....I had only lost 1 lb! I was so darn strict for 2 WEEKS and all I dropped was a lousy lb!? Which means I gained back 2 out of the 3 lbs I lost in the beginning. I'm seriously not motivated anymore. It's super frustrating.

Then I got sick and couldn't stomach eating meat, salad, yogurt, or seafood..so I figured I'd just eat what I wanted but the weird thing is that the thought of bread made me sick...me?! the carb freak?! sick of bread?! unheard of!

But I went off for about 4 days or so and I feel blah again..it's not that I was eating completely horribly (although I did have a few pieces of pizza when I was feeling better :\ ) but my body started feeling sluggish again...

so I know that this "Diet" is a healthy one but I need something that will help me drop the lbs too....So here's my question...

Should I go back to phase 1? I'm not really having any cravings for bad carbs, sugar, etc.

Do you think I should have restricted my calories in phase 1 or that I should in phase 2 if I move into phase 2?

I was considering pairing SBD with WW to control my portions a little more. WW worked for me in the past but SBD seems to be healthier for long term.

Any input would be helpful!

jlh88 -- sorry for your frustrations! I know the hard part is trying to compare weight loss with other people. Remember, your body is unique and different than anyone else's and will react differently as well. A loss is a loss, no matter how small. I just want to encourage you to stick with it, and I know that this healthy way of eating is a lifetime plan for me, not just for weight loss.

Portion control was a big issue for me last week, I overate on OP foods, felt stuffed and bloated, but just could not bear to be hungry. Now, things are settling in. It might help for you to post a typical day's meal plan for you, then the other senior members might be able to help you with that?

I would suggest restarting Phase 1. Even though your cravings may be gone, it is a great and intentional period of time to where you re-adjust and clean yourself out. For me personally, combing SBD and WW would be too time consuming, I just like sticking with OP food and the plan for now.

Thanks for sharing and for giving us the chance to encourage you!

It's just hard for me to stick with something if it doesn't give me results. I didn't expect a huge weight loss considering I already eat pretty darn healthy. However, I expected more than 1lb! =(

I've posted a few days of my eating habits early on and the senior members said my menu looked ok...it was pretty much the same thing for two weeks with minor glitches (menu items from the recipe posts)...I think I'm going to restart Phase 1 again *sigh* and be completely strict on what I eat...I'm going to try to watch portions though...but not to the point where I leave a meal starving...It's going to be hard to stick with Phase 1 though because I have my birthday (more drinking than the cake lol), a bachelorette party, and a wedding I'm in all within the next 3 weeks BUT I cannot hold off for 3 weeks...I feel gross being off plan for 4 days! lol

thanks for the support..it means a lot

Remember that while a lot of people lose weight on Phase 1 it's primary purpose is to get rid of cravings. Once you move into Phase 2 you can really start exercising (cardio and weights) and watch those serving sizes. Once I'd been on Phase 2 for a couple of months I added calorie counting as a back-up measure. I'm not so good at self control. I also measured and weighed food for awhile just to make sure I really know what a serving size looks like. Most of us don't after years of super size and huge restaurant portions. Then some people (like me!) are spurt losers - nothing for weeks then a big drop, then nothing for weeks. I remember whining a whole lot at the time ;)

You know this WOL is healthy and your body obviously responded to it. Now you just have to trust that you will lose in time. For now celebrate getting healthy. (I do know it's easier said then done but in the long run healthy is going to keep you coming back to this WOL). You can do this!

jlh88

CyndiM** do you think I should move on to phase 2 if I don't have the cravings even though I messed up for a few days?

Lexxiss
07-25-2009, 07:28 PM
I agree with Cyndi, that you need to give it time. I have a guess that if you get back OP and stick with it that things will start looking up for you.

I had never heard it called anything before, but I definitely have experienced "spurt losing". My weight loss slowed between weeks 3-5, then I lost 3 in a week, and a few more here and there. The first 10 days of July it seemed to be more consistent..but I've been following it pretty consistantly. I may eat more or less from day to day but I haven't put white flour or sugar in my body for 12 weeks now. Day to day the only bread I'm eating is Ezekial or homemade.

Personally, I just don't think mixing SB and WW is a great idea. They are 2 totally different philosophies and while each is great on its own it sounds pretty complex to try to meld them.

I really think you shouldn't be discouraged. You've come a long way!! If you're not having craving issues it seems P1 might be far to restrictive to keep you happy for long.

Hi everyone! How is the weekend treating you?

For me...first, the good news. The last few days have been great. I have lost 5 lbs in week one of Phase 1! I think it came off so quickly because I was losing "vacation weight" - had been eating really poorly up til then so I think my body decided to be nice to me for making an effort. :) I imagine next week will see a slower loss but I do hope to still lose a bit more.

Then...the not so good news. Today at lunch I ate about 4 bites of spaghetti, for no other reason than to "be polite." I am determined to NOT use this as a temptation to slip back into bad habits, but this is the second time I have broken plan this time around in order to be pleasing to others. It's funny - tomorrow I will be at an amusement park all day with my husband, and I know it will be challenging, but I also know I will be fine because I will be "in control." But when I get around others who don't know me well...it's like I am embarrassed to admit to them that I am cutting out certain foods or something like that. I just really don't want to share something so personal with them, so I hide it rather than be upfront about why I want to pass on eating this or that. Err...

So that's what's going on with me. Good news and bad news. But at the end of P1, I guess it's not my hope to declare that I did it perfectly...but rather that I kicked my cravings, developed healthier habits, and have committed myself to a better future.

Kate

jlh, sorry to hear your frustration. But, a pound is still progress! I say go back to Phase 1 or do "1.5" if that's the best you can do right now. Good luck and I hope those numbers change for you soon!

jlh - please try not to be frustrated this WOE really does work, and you really will drop pounds. 1lbs is signifigant... your going in the right direction. In 2007 I introduced myself to to this WOE, over about 7 months time I lost 58lbs. I felt healthy, energized and vibrant! My downfall was hitting off plan to often and then spindling back into the carb/junkfood crazed person that I had started out as. I finally came to my senses after gaining back all the weight I had lost + some more. I'm here to stay this time... please take your journey with me :) I really don't think you need to add in an additional plan either.

Sunday is almost over ladies, and the work week will begin.. again. My Mother made a huge batch of veggie soup (totally OP) she gave me half and mmmmmm it is soooo good, i'm looking forward to the left overs for quick lunch at work. Spent some time at the pool today with the kids, it was nice out for a change. Will be hitting the pavement for a nice walk in a little bit too. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

I have had a tough week. My dad passed away last Monday. I just ate whatever people brought, but still lost 5 pounds from stress. I am ready to make week two a good one. These are the hard times we just have to manage to keep going, and I want to loose this weight once and for all.

HI, everyone! I've been here on the SBD forums for quite a while, but I'm back to P1 for real this time and am just going to jump into the thread rather than trying to catch up. I'm sure I'll learn names and stories soon!

tyleralona: I send you and your family my heartfelt condolences as you all go through this tough time. I know it is very hard for you to focus on your weight and eating at all at this time and I'm very happy to see that it is still a priority for you.

So, this is day 1 for me. I spent last week re-reading SB Supercharged and re-read all the P1 stuff last night. I did my grocery shopping yesterday evening and have all my snacking veggies cut up and bagged so that I can just reach into the fridge and eat!

Here's my Day 1 menu:

B: 6 oz. LS V8, 8 oz. skim milk, 2 eggs scrambled with zucchini & onions, 2 slices turkey bacon
S: 1/4 cup cauliflower w/ 1 tsp. dressing, 1 PS mozzarella string cheese
L: 2 cups salad w/ lettuce, cucs, bell peppers and celery topped w/ 1/3 cup black beans and 1 Tbsp. dressing, bell pepper strips on the side
S: 2 celery stalks w/ roasted red pepper hummus, 15 almonds
D: Shredded beef (like for tacos) on a big salad w/ steamed veggies on the side
D: Vanilla ricotta creme

My workout today is a WATP (Walk Away The Pounds) DVD and I plan to walk at least 2 miles, but will go on to 3 or 4 if my body is up for it! I usually do really intense workouts, so this week is going to be a big adjustment, but I'm hoping to get back to my regular program after the two weeks are up.

I'm being realistic and not using this for a big "whoosh" of weight loss. My goal is to maintain my 1.5 lb per week which is what I was averaging before the last month when I went haywire with my eating. The big point of all of this (going back to P1) is to banish the cravings and to give me a game plan for the next few months. We travel A LOT in the fall/winter and having a plan in place will get me closer to my goal rather than farther from it, which has happened in past years.

Okay, I guess I'd better get moving. I need to get my lunch together and get back to work. I hope all of you are having a wonderful Monday and I hope to get to know you soon!

I just started day 1 of my second week in Phase 1. I've lost 6 lbs, but know that will probably start to slow down this week. Question for those who have BTDT:
Did you notice that your grocery bills are any higher? I'm used to eating high carb to stretch the dollar in the house, and now I'm stocking up on veggies and am afraid once school starts for the kids, our groceries are going to be through the roof.
Any ideas?

CyndiM
07-27-2009, 06:18 PM
LaMariposa - If you don't already, learn to use dried beans. They are a great source of fiber, protein and other good things and they are filling. There are lots of good recipes above. I also like crockpot meals. Once you move away from simple carbs you may find you need to make slightly less food. A lot of that stuff isn't very filling while whole grains, beans and dense veggies are very filling.

Good morning, everyone! Day 2 of P1 for me and I'm feeling pretty good!

LaMariposa: How great that you're already down by 6 lbs! Congrats! I do notice that my budget goes up a bit when I'm following SB the way it's meant to be followed, but it is never a HUGE increase. I agree with Cyndi about the dried legumes. Also, don't be afraid of frozen veggies!! I can usually get them on sale for a pack that will serve DH and I twice. I don't ever pay more than $2 a bag. I usually stock up when a good sale is going and use coupons as much as possible. I know a lot of people question frozen veggies, but they're flash-frozen right after harvest, so nutrients don't have a chance to leach out. It's all about how they're cooked. If you used those for cooked veggies with meals, you may be able to save room in your budget for fresh for school lunches/snacks.

Janet: Thanks for the warm welcome back! I think I would freak out if one of our stores started carrying ground turkey (or even turkey breasts). Have a wonderful day!

Today is going well. I was quite lethargic yesterday and didn't make my workout, but I'm okay with that. My goal is at least 30 minutes 5 days a week, so I will still be able to meet that.

I went over my planned menu yesterday, but it was day 1, so that's to be expected. I ended up eating two hard-boiled eggs and an extra string cheese. I'll be better today. I think I just need to manage my eating times better. Speaking of managing time, I need to go eat my morning snack (celery w/ black olive and oregano hummus) before I have to be across the street for jury duty at 10!

Adios, and I hope everyone has a great day!!

Hi guys! I'm on my 2nd day of Phase 1! I work out a lot so I'm a little bit nervous about how these first two weeks will affect that, but I'm going to keep plugging away!

Kim - I'm going to try to get some big bags of veggies from Sam's next time I go. I usually buy the california blend, but DH yelled at me for giving him all the carrots out of the bag...lol. Jury duty - blech! My FIL was on grand jury for a few months. I've been lucky so far....

Hello to all! I'm back (again) on Phase 1, day 2! Yesterday went alright, although I hadn't been to the grocery so I had to make meals out of what I had. I actually ate a boca burger for breakfast today just to eat something. I went to the store at lunch to avoid this happening again!

A quick question I have is this... the diet goes meal-snack-meal-snack-meal. I am a person that really has to eat something around 8-8:30 at night. I don't know why, but my body craves something and if I don't plan for it, it can get out of control!

Is a snack like this allowed as long as it's OP? Raw veggies, a lf string cheese, almonds (if I haven't had my 15 for the day), etc. Last night I had about 10 turkey pepperonis and it was wonderful!

Congrats to all of you for the weight you've lost and are going to lose! I can't wait to start shedding some pounds. Since I live in FL, we tend to hibernate in the summer instead of winter due to the heat, so I've been pretty lazy with eating and exercising.

Looking forward to some knowledge on the evening snack! (Also, I never eat desert, just don't like sweets!)

Thanks!

Hi, Tryin2LoseIt! Welcome back to P1! I don't have the book right in front of me, but I do believe the formula is actually meal-snack-meal-snack-meal-snack/dessert. I always eat a post-dinner snack. I have a sweet-tooth, so I typically choose one of the OP desserts, but if I'm out of the stuff to make that, I'll have a small salad, some veggies w/ hummus and etc. I've pretty much always eaten my nut/cheese allotment for the day, but I think that anything OP is okay. The book, in particular the Phase 1 chapter and Phase 1 FAQ's, don't mention anything about how late you eat, so I think you're good to go!

kk83: WTG on getting through your first day! I work out pretty hard as well and do have to take a step back on intensity for the first 3-7 days. I'm usually back to normal by the end of P1. I'm sure you know your body, so just take it easy if needed. If I try to do normal intensity, I tend to get dizzy and/or nauseous.

I'm out of jury duty. Yay! Now to face the remainder of the work-day and then home for a nice, long walk. I stuffed my face with almonds, too many of course, but it was the only thing OP that I could think of to throw in my purse during the jury selection. I'm sure it'll be fine and I'll just move forward with the rest of my day. Okay, now I really need to hit the stack on my desk that piled up while at the courthouse!

Good day, everyone! Just checking in to say hi and that I'm still plugging halfway through Phase 1. I am suffering some burnout though so I will search the recipes tonight for some new ideas for the remainder of the week. I definitely just ate 1/2 a skinny cow ice cream sandwich and a sugar free pudding cup, grrrr.

I tried to make an on plan cream cheese/natural peanut butter splenda concoction and it just wasn't happening for me so I caved :(.

Blah! I had to confess and I feel super guilty seeing as it's all of day 2.

Stick with it, kk - you can pick yourself back up and get right back on plan! Do you have sugar-free fudgesicles and hard candies in your arsenal? That might help you out...

I am on Day 9 and I need to tighten up the diet - as the scale has stalled for the past 3 days. Suffice to say my vacation weight has been lost and now I'm dealing with more difficult poundage!! If I take an honest look I know I have been eating too much dairy and some of it was not lowfat. So...now that cravings have been kicked I need to spend the rest of my P1 re-adjusting my reliance on fats.

Now for breakfast! I think I'm finally ready for some eggs again - a feta cheese omelet sounds about right!

Have a great day ladies!

For breakfast, have you checked out the ideas in the recipe section? I might try the mock muffins tomorrow as a departure from the norm. Also, how do you feel about dinner leftovers or soup for breakfast? Not a bad option if you can stomach it!

My standard P1 breakfast is 1/2 c ff refried beans (I usually make my own), 1-2 c veggies (broccoli, peppers, squash, spinach, whatever I have in the house), some good salsa (watch out for added sugar in some brands), and 1 serving of either veggie crumbles or rf cheese. It's still my go to breakfast on cool days and days I know I will be busy all morning and need something that will stay with me.

I hear you. I was not happy with the 2 p1 desserts I tried. What I did, instead is take the attitude "This is only 2 weeks in my life I'll wait until P2." I made a different flavor of SF jello every day and really enjoyed it. You can make jello with sparkling water which adds some fizz to it. I also made a slushie with crystal light tropical punch. It is so important to eat foods OP right now. 2 weeks with some discomfort but well worth it later!

The reality for me; it WAS only two weeks, I feel great now (starting week 14) and there are wonderful options on P2. I'm baking right now. BTW I am finding that my tastes are changing where sweets are concerned. I used to crave something sweet after dinner but that urge is greatly diminished.

Best wishes! Perhaps someone else will have another suggestion for you.

Hi all! Day 13 of Phase 1, weigh in on Fri AM. Not weighing every day, afraid to! Small weight loss last week, but instead focusing on losing the cravings. Looking forward to Phase 2, but I may stay on PH1 another week or two while I incorporate back what I am missing the most -- my wine! ;)

A big challenge faces me today, having lunch with a girlfriend at Olive Garden! Hoping I can stay strong and have some fish and a salad. Um, I can already smell the breadsticks and creamy pasta calling my name!! But I feel soooo good with the way I've been eating lately, I'm pretty sure I can resist!

bekabu1882 -- I have a hard time getting veggies in the AM as well, so I always have V8 with my breakfast (usually a hard-boiled egg). Filling, yummy (I do like it!), and I got my veggie portion in. Also, I made the veggie quiche cups yesterday -- yummo!! Hubby and DS loved them too, they are half gone already!!

momofsteel -- congrats on making it thru PH1 and the weight loss! :carrot::carrot:

Thank you guys for the support. I am a major sugar aholic and I knew that would be my biggest challenge, but also why I really wanted to do this plan in particular.

I joked with my husband that I could go without bread/rice/potatoes for a long time but going without ice cream, cupcakes, and cookies would be a major major struggle!

Thanks for the advice! Sometimes I just feel like I'm eating too much or not enough! I'm trying to just focus on the foods right now and keep those OP! So far today has been great:

B: 2 egg muffins I made with tomatoes, onions, green peppers, a bit of ff cheese, and garden veggie egg beaters
S: 15 almonds
L: Salad with grilled chicken, tomatoes, onions, ff cheese, black beans, a pinch of ff cheese, and light ranch dressing (<1g sugar per serving)
S: Will be... couple slices of turkey and some provolone (lf)
D: TBD - some sort of meat, of course, and I am thinking brocolli - lots of it!

I have found that planning is key this time around on phase 1! Last night when shopping for dinner, I bought stuff to make my salad today with the leftover chicken from last night. So far, I feel great, and the scale is down almost 4 lbs and I'm only on day 3. (I know most of this is water weight, but as long as it's not going up, I'm happy! I just can't resist stepping on every morning!)

This thread is great and I love reading about everyone's updates. It's nice to know others struggle like I do and I'm not alone!

CindieJo - I hope you were able to resist at lunch!! I'm sure you did beautifully!

I made it through lunch! My friend had the breadsticks, and some ravioli smothered in some kind of sauce. I really was not even tempted, not even the slightest! :D I guess its true the Phase 1 really does help you get rid of the cravings! I was perfectly fine having salmon and a caesar salad. Wow, I think I finally found a way of eating/living that I can really stick to this time, long term!

Chickies, this old hen has noticed that dairy is frequently missing from your meal plans. Please check out the revised food list because you really should be having it! You don't want crumbly bones when you get to be as old as me!

Cindi, that is great! I was wondering how a person could stay strong at Olive Garden. It gives me hope because we have a gift card and I know we'll want to eat there soon. Good job!

Hi Ladies! :) I just started Phase I when I found some SB cookbooks I had bought a while ago, and realised that the plan is very close to the way that I have been eating/wanting to eat . . . recently I have found that I need some fine tuning.

I went to the bookstore tonight to get the book and they didnt have it! :(

I do have some questions though that I was hoping someone could shed some light on . . . I scanned through the FAQs and couldnt see them there.

What is considered "Milk/Dairy" in terms of the 2 cup limits? Just the things listed under that heading in the Phase I acceptable foods list?

Or do I limit cheese too such a Ricotta as a Milk/Dairy "serving"? And is other low fat cheese "limited"?

Also are beans and legumes treated as veggies and unlimited?

Thankies in advance!!!

:D

Also, after years of Atkins style LC'ing . . . soooooooo freeing to be able to eat veggies with gay abandon!! But the shift to low fat dairy is one that my head doesnt know what to do with yet.

Last day on Phase 1! Need to read up on the allowed list on Ph 2 and decide what I will be introducing back starting this weekend. Kind of scary!

For my dairy intake, I usually have LF cottage cheese for mid-morning snack. Or I'll have some plain yogurt (mixed with a packet of Splenda and cinnamon -- yummo!). Then after my almost nightly snack of PB cup (ran out of PB, missed it last night!), I'll have a glass of LF milk.

The other night I just, out of habit, poured my nightly milk out of the family's 2% container and drank it down. Yikes!! Really, my only "cheat" while on Phase 1 -- besides overeating on OP food the first few days!

I currently have a hamstring injury, but trying hard to recover from it so I can jump back on the exercise wagon. Thanks for all your motivation, friends!

Dairy is milk and yogurt only. Cheeses are unlimited, but some have slowed weight loss if eaten in excess. Cheeses that are lowfat (6gms fat or less per serving) are OK. Beans are considered veggies but it is suggested you start out with 1/2 cup servings and increase to tolerance. (Bloating & gas issues) Hope this helps!

Hey, everyone. Quick check-in for me! Things are going smoothly, but we're quite swamped at the office. I'm still going strong on D4 of P1. Last night's workout was at lowered intensity, but I think it's because my calories weren't all that high pre-workout and because my beans were eaten after workout as well.

Today's a new day and I'll eat my assigned snacks and my beans at lunch! Still feeling great, though, if a little tired. Hope everyone else is having a wonderful Thursday!

Just wanted to pop in and introduce myself. I'm on day 4 of Phase 1 and am really excited about the progress I'm seeing already, and the fact that my low blood sugar shakiness and extreme cravings are MIA!

I don't have any health issues (yet) and my cholesterol, etc. are all really great but I don't want to carry around this extra weight for the rest of my life, and if I don't get it off now, It'll just be harder later on. I've been heavy my whole life, but got down into the 180s for a while about 4 years ago. I looked and felt great, but have allowed myself to get back up to 245. eek!

I need to spend some time getting familiar with the forums here. I look forward to getting to know all of you!

So my birthday is tomorrow :hat:and I was thinking about not even trying to fight the typical birthday stuff--eating out, drinks, cake. I was walking through the store thinking, "Well if I'm going off plan for a day, I mine as well eat the stuff that I don't get to." I went to grab the stuff I used to eat and I realized that I don't even want it anymore. It doesn't even sound appealing. I've started to finally lose weight too! I'm down 4lbs since restarting last week.

Even though it's my birthday, I'm not going to go overboard on the bad food. I don't even know if I'll even go off plan now.

Just the fact that I don't want all the old garbage I used to eat is enough of a reason for me to believe this way of life works.

What does everyone do when their birthday plans come around? Do you indulge? Do you make minor tweaks? I'm curious.

First congratulations on your realization! That's a huge accomplishment and really emphasizes that this WOL is a good fit for you. I love that freedom - feeling like I'm not held hostage by my cravings.

As far as your question - I really would not go off plan in Phase 1 for any reason, especially not with carbs. Fats might be a calorie issue but not a craving issue, but eating sugar in the middle of Phase 1 really defeats the purpose. You need 2 clean weeks.

Now I usually allow myself 1 piece of carrot cake (my favorite) with some conditions. It has to come from a local bakery where I know the ingredients are high quality. That means no high fructose corn syrup or trans fats. I also buy just one piece, no point pretending I can resist an entire cake if it's sitting around here. Finally I keep the rest of the day OP, even dinner. Obviously YMMV but I go off the rails too easily so need to keep a tight rein on myself every day, even on special occasions.

Happy birthday!

It sounds like you don't want to go off plan...you just somehow think you "should" because it's a special day. I say stick to the plan - because honestly...if its not your birthday, it's going to be something else, you know? There will always be more cake to enjoy once you've gotten yourself on track.

Good luck!

Thanks guys!

kleo--you know, you're right! I didn't really look at it that way.....there always excuses that can be made for eating poorly. Besides, what better gift to myself than having a new happy, healthy lifestyle?

I think my problem isn't necessarily the cake or eating out...it's the drinks! The good thing is that I don't really get cravings to eat after drinking, but I know it's not good on P1. It makes your blood sugar all wacky.

Is it bad to continue to restart to P1? I've been on and off P1 for a month. I had a real hard time sticking to the plan when I first started. I'd be good for a few days and then mess up so I'd restart it. The last time I was almost through it (had less than 2 days to go) and my sister went into the hospital so I had other things to worry about rather than making me meals. :o I didn't go off the deep end with eating poorly, but some food wasn't on plan. I make sure I take a multi vitamin, but I'm not sure if it's going to affect my health being on it too long.

Besides, what better gift to myself than having a new happy, healthy lifestyle?

I started my last weight loss journey (this current one) 4 days before my bday and that is what I decided. My gift to myself was feeling good. I did not regret staying on plan one iota. It made me rather proud of myself to do it. And I stayed on plan through Easter . . . Christmas . . . all the big carbstacle events. Did not concern me at all.

These past 2 weeks went by so fast! Lost 2.2 on week 1 and 1.6 on week 2, total of 3.8 on P1. Not the huge numbers I was expecting, but I'm pleased. I read somewhere that you can expect to lost about 10% of the weight you want to lose. I want to lose about 40 lbs, expected a loss of 4.0 lbs. So I'm just a tad under goal right now. I can live with that! :D

I have really gotten used to this new way of eating and I have never felt better. I truly cannot believe the amount of energy I have. I'm getting so much accomplished in the evenings, whereas before I'd plop in front of the TV with my glass(es) of wine and be a couch potato for 3-4 hours a night. No more of that! Now I'm needing to concentrate on fixing this stupid hamstring injury so I can get back to working out.

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed beginning P2, not sure what to introduce first. I know to just pick one thing and see how my body reacts. I'm just not a big fruit eater, but looking forward to exploring the whole grains that I can have. I joined SBD online as well (although this forum is way better!), mainly for recipes and such. I want to incorporate more healthy meals for the family as well, and need to tweak some family favorites to try and make them SBD friendly. Also "discovered" Katlyn's Kitchen last night -- wow, can't wait to dive into some of those recipes!!

So Happy Friday to all, my fellow SBD chickies!! I'm still going to stick around this thread to see how you all are doing. I can't believe how much support and encouragment this has been, just reading about others struggles, challenges, and victories. You guys are the best -- and thanks to the mods for their time and support as well!!!

JLH88 - CONGRATULATIONS on the realization that you don't even want all that junk any more!

CindieJo WAY TO GO!

I cooked mac-n-cheese for DS, 8 and his best friend last night and was only half-tempted to have a bite. I didn't have any and did not miss it at all!!

Woo! D5 P1 today, and I feel great! I just love reading all of your posts because it helps to know there are others out there who are doing this and having success!

I have found that I'm getting a little weary of all the major prep that goes into making the meals from the SB book, so I used my knowledge and improvised a little today - I made a YUMMY chicken salad that I can have for lunch over a ton of lettuce. I can't wait for lunch today!

Chickies, congratulations to everyone for making it though July with such successed. It sure is a learning process and sharing your triumphs and problems sure helps. When you leave for Phase II, please do come back in and help the Phase I folks. You'll notice that we have several successful Beachers who are in here a lot. That's what makes the Beach so great!

I'll start a new Phase I thread tomorrow with a link back to this one so we can reference the information.

jrizzle, welcome! It sounds like you are doing great. To stay strong in the face of mac and cheese is a feat I can hardly imagine!! Keep it up and lots of luck to you. I agree that the prep can be tiring, but I've found it's so much better to prep than to try to wing it!

As this July thread comes to a close, I want to say thanks. About 2 weeks ago I frantically posted a message after downing chocolate pop-tarts at midnight. Now I am toward the end of Phase 1 and am grateful for all the support, inspiration, and all I've learned from you.

I'm down about 6 pounds as this phase comes to a close...I'll post the official result on Tuesday!

peace,
Kate

Sorry to hear you had a slip-up oops...but you can do it! Have you read the "Prepare yourself to start South Beach" thread which is stickied on the main page of this forum? I think you'd find it pretty helpful if you haven't checked it out already. It could help you set a plan for pitfalls this time around.

Good luck!

I will be re-starting tomorrow :) I started without even planning to :D the past 2 days and LOVED how I felt on Phase 1 so have decided to commit to it from Sunday (tonight, Sat is my brothers engagement dinner). Lets get Phase 1 done!!!
