Many people I know have done that - they are not "counting" anything but have cut out sugar, rice, anything "white" and are eating fruit and veg freely as well as lean protein.

Sure, it can be done. Losing weight & keeping it off isn't about what kind of diet you're doing...its about making permanant lifestyle changes

Agreed

I am a firm believer that you can lose weight doing pretty much any "plan" or anything as long as it is something that works for you and makes sense for you to be able to do it for the rest of your life.

Find something that makes sense for you and be consistent and the weight will come (and stay) off

There's only one way to find out, and that is to try it, and see. Food journals are still one of the best ways to evaluate how well you're sticking to your plan, and/or to find weaknesses in that plan if or when the weight loss stalls.

If you give up sugar and white flour you will automatically give up many things which are fattening, e.g. sweets, cakes, etc. It`ll be a good start, particularly if , so far, you have eaten a lot of this kind of food!
