to exercise or not to exercise...that is the ?
Almost 4 weeks ago I started my weight loss. I'm on a calorie counting diet. My allowance is 1,250 a day, to lose 2 lbs a week. I'm 5'4" and weight 171 lbs
In the past 3 weeks I lost 7 lbs, originally I weighed 178.
I haven't strayed from my diet and I'm exercising everyday.
My first 2 weeks I was doing nothing more then doing the step aerobics on the Wii Fit. During that time I lost 5 lbs
My thrid week, I moved up to running and strength training using 3 lbs weights while I did my step aerobics. I only lost 1 lb
This week, I started using TaeBo. I've gained 8 oz.
I don't know what to do, I know its not to drop my calorie intake. So do I stop exercising?
I've been enjoying exercising, I don't want to stop. Mainly b/c I fear getting lazy and not wanting to do it again or I just decide to slip back to my old ways.
I want to see my weight dsrop even though I'm seeing inches drop. My plan is once I do lose all the weight to exercise to build muscle.
I have 42 lbs to lose.

Being concerned over your weight isn't always accurate. Inches is the better way to go sometimes. Keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat. Gain muscle by exercising and the weight can go up BUT the inches go down. Does that make sense?
I say keep up with the exercise. Cardio is important not just for the weight loss but mainly for heart health. So you can't go wrong by keeping up with the exercise. Don't get discouraged by the scale. Praise yourself for every inch you lose. That's the fat leaving ya.
Good luck hon!

Rather than quitting the exercise, I think that maybe by increasing your calories a few days a week, that might help. You may simply may not be eating enough to sustain the type/frequency of exercise you are doing.

should I go back to the step aerobics? Something less extensive then Taebo?
or is running in place a better option? I have the "Active" Wii software that has short, medium, and long runs. I've been able to do the medium runs and am hoping to work my way up to a long run.
Either way, for sure I'm making sure dh takes the scale away from me.

1200 calories is the bare minimum of calories to eat to sustain ones self comfortably, so if you're only eating 1250 and exercising much more then normal, your body is probably sensing a famine and is conserving all it's getting. I would reccomend keeping hydrated, bumping up your calories at least 100 more a day and possibley calorie cycling. (Eg. 1300 for 3 days, 1500 for 2 days, 1700 for one?) I'm no expert, I just found that not eating enough actually made me gain a pound in a month instead of losing like 5. I got really discouraged and almost gave up but then I read on here that calorie cycling and upping calories helps and it did.
You sound like you are doing so great. I know it sounds weird to eat a little more to lose a little more but it will help, I'm almost sure.
Good luck to you!

It could also be some water weight. My muscles retain water as they repair themselves after intense workouts.
DEFINITELY keep up the exercise. It isn't about the scale - it is about being fit and healthy.
Upping your calories could help, as Niecy suggested. It's worth a try.
Make sure you are getting enough protein as well!
Your body will adjust, and the scale will start moving down again. Really!

Okay, I'll do what you all are saying. I just feel like crying. My husband is on the same diet, though not the same calorie intake but whatever it is for him to lose 1 lb a week. He doesn't do one lick of exercise and he's lost 11 lbs in the same time frame. aaahhh!!!
I'm still in...not giving up.

Hon, don't know if you noticed but...your husband is a M A N. Men never do the same thing we do so don't be discouraged by his weight loss. Keep your head held high, bump up the calories and toss the scale into the dark depths of a closet. Concentrate on eating healthly and exercising safely. Good things come to those who weight. haha. Sorry bout the pun.

this may not help, but I'm doing Jillian Michael's 30 Day shred dvd 5/6 days a week, and the Wii Fit. I love the idea of using handweights with the step thing on the Wii! I love doing that step activity but was looking for ways to bump it up! Yes!
I do weight watchers, where I count points instead of calories. I have just recently begun to understand that I it's not a bad thing to eat the points I earn through working out and that my body needs those extra points/cals for energy.
Yes, it does feel like I'm cheating because I always seem to associate eating more points/cals bad, even if it's healthy food and Im honestly hungry...
But if this is gonna be a lifestyle choice, we want to be able to maintain on the highest amount of points/calories...
So, add a few more cals a day, maybe 100 or 200....see how it goes, tweak it.
However, I am not losing weight all thaqt fast, maybe 1.5 lbs a week, but I am losing inches. Not sure how much, but I can tell by how my clothes fit.
It's ironic that I'm reading a post thaqt I could have and almost did write. I'm trying to keep in my head htat working out isn't just about weight loss or inches lost, but health. I can do that long island lap now, where before I couldn't.
If you're looking for something kind of funny, you can make your "wii mii' fall down during a run if you shake the controller up and down vigorously. Make me smile

I have the exact same stats as you and had a similar problem when I first started. My weight watchers leader told me I probably needed to eat more because my body was going into starvation mode. I increased my intake by 3-4 points (approx 150-200 cals) on days that I worked out, and that was all it took for me to start losing again. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but give it a try
Good luck!

This is exceptionally funny. I was at a friend's house playing her Wii Fit and our 4 year olds were doing the run and one of them dropped the control and the guy fell. It was hilarious. We kept shaking it as hard as we could to see it again.

Sounds like you're doing great! I would definitely keep exercising and don't worry so much about the scale! It goes up and down for all kinds of reasons that have NOTHING to do with fat gain and loss. You have to learn how to handle these ups and downs.
My scale is one of the "dial" type scales. Honestly, I couldn't even SEE an 8 oz swing on it!

I have had similar results as you at the beginning of starting to try to lose weight again. I usually have just restricted calories for the first week and then add exercise the second week. Without fail when I start exercising, the weight loss comes to a standstill. At the beginning of 2008, I went 3 weeks without losing a pound after starting up an exercise regime and then of course I just quit and gave up. When I restarted again at the beginning of 2009, the exact same thing happened. This time I refused to give up and eventually the weight started coming off again. I've since lost about 26 pounds which has been about a pound a week.
My suggestion is DON'T STOP EXERCISING. Keep doing what you are doing, maybe up your calories a bit on a few days each week and the weight will come off.

Thanks everyone. I've been so trained to eat a certain way for my meals that when I up'ed my calories this morning....I was on what more to add. I was doing fine with what I was eating before, so this morning I added more to my meal.
I did the step on the Wii instead of TaeBo. Later I plan to do some running using the "active" Wii software.
we found out about the Wii guy falling when dh was trying to be clever one day and tried to run really fast to make it to the finish line. Well steps before the finish line his guy fell. We all couldn't stop laughing...too funny. Another one is when one of the other Wii people fall (when your running) or if when you fall you manage to bring someone else down with you. LOL

I agree about eating more. If I were eating that few calories, I don't think I'd be losing either. And it's something that I'm having to keep an eye on myself, now that I've thrown an appetite suppresant into the mix. Since I'm not hungry, I could easily be skipping meals, but that would a) make me irritable and b) slow down my weight loss. I'm having to focus on getting enough calories still in, but trying to make sure that they are better choices of calories than what I used to make.
