We are about Fitness and Quality of Life after 50...
We are about Fun and Friendship after 50...
We are the Golden Girls...
There is Value in us
There is Power in us
There is Wisdom in us
And Laughter....
We are a rainbow of unique wonders,
There is love in us.
(poem by Dorothy Holmes)
Tell us a little about your life, family and goals. What keeps you motivated? What is the best thing that's happened to you since you passed the 50 mark?
Friends laugh, cry and stand by each other, we'll be that to you!

Hi everyone! We finally got moved to MO. YAY!! Things are still a mess but it is getting better. My Dad is in a skilled nursing center and he has good days and bad. They have told us he really has just weeks left with us here on this earth. This past Monday he was doing fantastic and was up most of the day and beat the pants off of everyone playing dominoes!! Then Tuesday he had a really bad day and it has been up and down like that since we got here on the 15th. So between tryiing to get the house set up and going to see my Dad everyday it has been a busy time! I really don't even have internet set up yet--- just being able to catch an unsecured connection every once in awhile. We should have ours set up by the 10th.
My son and his family are here and have been a big help with getting heavy stuff done. I'll be pretty sad when they leave in a couple weeks to go back to Florida!
I hope everyone is doing good. I will try to get on here more often and let you know how things are going here. Take care and enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

Good Morning!
Glynn...I would close the thread down if the post continue to drop, we'll see if it picks up this month. My MIL is always cold too, while in Rochester they piled 4 blankets on her while waiting for surgery. We have to go pick her up from Rochester this morning.
Karen31, so glad you're in your dream home/state. What's going on with your Colorado home? Sorry about your dad but being there with him will be a blessing to both of you.
Rosey...maybe you shouldn't push getting better with all that attention!:joker: I pulled a ham string a few years ago and I still get twinges of pain, my leg was pitch black all the way up.
Where's Karen3, Lynn and Meowee?

Yep . . . I am still alive, but definitely not kicking very hard . . . my doctor is still dithering between Asthma and Pneumonia, or some combination thereof, as being the basis of my problems.
At least he has finally decided to refer me to a Respiratory Disease specialist and I go to see this new guy on Thursday. I also have an appointment next Monday for a CAT scan. Obviously my constant 'at home cat-scanning' doesn't cut it.
In the meantime, the GP took me off Prednisone, an oral steroid, because it's one of the worst things you can give a diabetic and it has so many other side effects as well (however, it was working wonders for the wheezing and coughing after only four or five doses) and put me on Symbicort which is an inhaled steroid, combined with Salbutamol, an inhaled bronchodilator. I do get a tiny bit of wheezing relief from the Salbutamol, but nothing but high blood sugar levels from the Symbicort.
Other than that . . . nothing going on in my world. I am thinking of you gang.

Hi Meowee, glad to see you back for now. Hope you soon get better and reactivated with all the things you do.
I made dozens of cookies and squares for DS's finance's bridal shower this coming weekend. Unfortunately, I ate about a dozen of the dozens. I made 8 different kinds so there will be plenty of variety. I managed to do some exercise this evening-about 35 minutes so the day wasn't a complete washout. Tomorrow I'll be especially careful with food intake.
Bobbi, you DD's wedding sounds like it will be a nice relaxed family gathering. I told DS that this was it. If he ever got married again he was on his own, ha,ha.
Karen31, glad you're getting settled in the new home and that you can be close to your father.
Rosey, we've had rain too but it's cleared up each day and the weather was glorious afterwards. Hope you're up and about soon, too.
Must go to bed as I'm dropping with sleep. Take care and I'll catch you all tomorrow.

Hi Bobbi,
You know that there are ups and downs with these threads. Sounds like we have quite a few folks under the weather.
I've been teaching a course with 15 VERY active students. Class will end next Monday - then a few days to grade papers. Be back on a regular basis in Mid-June.

Hi Isabella,
I stopped baking cookies 3 years ago - when I found out I was diabetic. If I bake 'em, I taste 'em. I gave my baking stuff and my recipes to the younger/healthier generation.
Went to NC to visit my friend (Serenity for some of you old-timers), and gained 4 pounds. Back home and back to eating right.
Thinking about writing a book about 21st century genealogists. A kind of case study of 10 - 20 genealogist - who they are, why they do genealogy & what they have found out. I figure I will do interviews. Give me a reason to do some more traveling.

Lynn...yah I know that always happens but we've never been this low in posts before. The bottom of the jokes I just posted says it all, 'Good friends are like stars....You don't always see them, but you know they are always there'.

Isabella...the future for Tiffany isn't looking so rosy this morning, the groom has cold feet and called the wedding off. DH and I think it's a good thing, he's not capable of handling our daughter, her two sons and the many issues of mixing two families. He has two daughters of his own, 14 & 16 and many problems with them and ex wife. She needs much prayer, I'm emailing her Isaiah 40: 27-31.
Any other suggestions or quotes that will get her through this trying time?
Linda...A good sense of humor goes a long way in healing the body, your cats can be great comfort. Good luck Thursday.

Rosey...:bravo:Good girl!
my clothes are looser so i must have lost something
Karen Mo......How does Sissy and Ginger like their new home? Do you have a fenced in yard like you had in Colorado? No mountain lions in sight, right!
Rochester won't release MIL yesterday because she hasn't gone potty yet. We're expecting a phone call today to pick her up, I hate that ride over. We'll also take back most of the wedding table stuff we purchased last week. We purchased 3 huge bowls with matching salad tongs that can't be taken back because they were not sealed/packaged. That will set me back about $40.00 bucks but maybe Tiffany can sell them on a rummage sale. Make lemonade out of lemons, right?
You all have a great day!

So sorry about your daughter Bobbi. My mom always quoted Romans 8:28 when things went wrong. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." I guess it's better we don't know the end from the beginning.
Too bad I'm not close I'd probably buy those salad bowls from you. But postage being what it is to and from Canada to the US it's cheaper to buy anything like that where you live.
Lynn, I'm not diabetic (good think after yesterday) but I was almost thinking about stopping baking after this wedding. At least stop for a while. Mom always likes something sweet to end her meals but she's just as happy with bought cookies or other sweets. I, on the other hand can usually resist bought cookies. And such a good idea for a book. I'm not into genealogy myself but I'll bet it will fill that niche for those who love it.
I stayed away from most cookies today. I did have one very small one after lunch which will not ruin my calorie intake. Last night I started my circuit workout for the first time since Christmas and today my shoulders are sore. I'm so out of shape using the resistance bands it's pathetic. Got get with the program.

Hi Bobbi,
I agree with you and your DH. My own saying has always been "Men are a lot easier to get than to get rid of." Don't know if that will help your DD right now, but I've always found it to be true.

Hi Isabella,
I just have NO willpower where cookie dough & hot-from-the-oven cookies are concerned. At 64, I have learned what I need to stay away from.
About the book - I am most looking forward to the process of writing it, conducting interviews with the genealogists, traveling to interview them, and finding out why folks do this and what they find. I have no illusions that anyone will actually want to read it. I've never written anything like this before - just my dissertation and funding proposals. No one would EVER want to read any of those unless they were being paid to do so ;)
This evening, I am going to dinner with a woman I met in my new book club. She is widowed within the past 2 years. My DH will be gone 3 years at the end of June. Will let you know how that goes.
Working on getting rid of the 4 lbs I gained on my trip to NC. Probably be gone by the time I am ready to leave for Phoenix/Las Vegas in July. Then I can go through this process all over again!

Good Morning! The following was in my email this morning, all old fashion ideas that sometimes work. I think the onion in your ear is a bit odd!
Got the sniffles or your head is hurting? No need to head to one of the mega drug stores and pay a fortune in over-the-counter medications. Many of the ailments that plague us and our kids on a regular basis can be treated with some frugal homemade remedies.
Disclaimer - I am not a health care professional, just a regular person sharing some old-fashioned tips. Use at your own risk. When in doubt, please see your doctor or other health care professional with any questions or concerns.
Headache
As soon as you start to feel a headache coming on, drink a big glass of cool water. Headaches are often a sign of dehydration in which case the liquid will help better than an aspirin.
If you don’t catch it in time, or the water didn’t help, try wetting a cloth and adding a few drops of mint oil to it. Lay the cool, wet cloth over your forehead, close your eyes and relax for a few minutes.
Cough
Heat some milk and stir a spoon full of honey in it and sip slowly. Right before bed, when coughing usually gets worse, you may want to take a spoon full of honey. It will coat the throat and stop the cough - Don’t give raw honey to children under the age of 2 though.
Get some Vicks (generic works fine) Rub, rub it on the bottom of your feet and put on a pair of socks. Then hop in the bed. The coughing should stop within about 15 minutes.
Get a cold, wet washcloth and put it on over your throat, then cover it with a dry towel.
Cold
Good old fashioned chicken soup is always my first choice. Be sure to breath in the steam from the hot soup… it’ll help open up your sinuses.
Another excellent remedy is to take the juice of a lemon and mix it with a cup of hot water and honey to taste. The honey will sooth a sore throat, the steam coming out of the cup will make your sinuses feel better and the vitamin C in the lemon helps your immune system.
Other than that plenty of fluids and rest should get you better in no time.
Sore Throat
Gargle with either garlic tea (press up to 6 cloves of garlic into some very warm water), or sage tea (steep sage leaves in boiling water for a few minutes… take the sage out and allow the tea to cool a bit.
Keep your throat covered with a cloth or scarf.
Drink some hot milk with honey to sooth the throat.
Ear Ache
Chop up a piece of onion, wrap it in some cheese cloth or a thin kitchen towel and place it on the ear. This works best if you’re laying on your side with the hurt ear up and then lay the onion on it.
Insect Bite
Get a solid deodorant stick and rub it on the insect bite.
Chew some parsley and put it on the bite. Takes the sting out within a few seconds.
Poison Ivy / Oak Rash
Take the rind of a watermelon and rub it on the rash.
Nausea
Drink some warm peppermint tea, eat some licorice or eat some ginger. Gingersnaps and candied ginger work well.
Fever
Get in a slightly cool bath. The cool water will help get your body temperature down. Alternatively you can make cool towel compresses. Dip a hand towel in cool water, wring it out and wrap it around your calves. Cover it with a larger dry towel. Repeat for the other leg. Rewet the towels with cool water as needed.
Make some linden flower tea and sip about 4 cups a day to get your fever down.
I’m sure there are plenty more homemade remedies out there that our mothers and grandmothers have relied on for years and years. Feel free to share the ones you know of as a comment below.

HOME REMEDY: My Grandmother used to go fresh mint. It really does help settle the upset tummy. She would have you chew on the leaves until completely pulverized. Then you just discard it. If you don’t have a plant handy, substitute a peppermint patty. This has helped more times than I can remember!
If you’re eating chicken soup for a cold, add a dash of Tabasco sauce. It really clears up the sinuses.
Trouble sleeping? Drink some chamomile tea, put some lavender in some sheer fabric and rub it over your pillow and set it nearby, and, as my husband says, “DREAM about it”, meaning, whatever you can’t stop thinking about…..turn it into a dream! The way I do that is allowing myself to begin thinking nonsense thoughts about it, wandering, disconnected, like you do in dreams.
Trouble waking up? Eat an apple. It wakes you up better than caffeine! Of course, going to bed earlier is what we REALLY need! Get up a half hour earlier and as soon as you get dressed, exercise. It will clear your mind, get your metabolism going, and allow you to plan and pray. Be sure and eat some protein right afterward, (like an egg) so your muscles have fuel to build with. Otherwise, your body won’t build muscle as well.
ginger tea, made from peeled sliced ginger root(about a 2 inch piece) is great for colds and also for upset stomach even after chemotherapy. Just simmer the ginger until the water looks like weak regular tea, for the colds drink it hot with honey. apples are good for headaches but you have to eat the peel.
When we were kids and would get a bee sting, my mother would get out the meat tenderizer. We would make a moist paste of it, apply to the sting, and it felt better quickly. I don’t know why it worked, but I still use it today for horse fly bites, etc.
Just be sure not to drink the sage tea if you are a nursing mother as it will reduce your milk supply. So is also a nice home remedy for drying up milk supply:-)
okay for bee stings make a baking soda paste and put it on the sting… for tooth ache use clove oil or cloves in whole pieces put on area that hurts… for fever I use alcohol rub it works wonders… those are a few remedies that were passed to me from my mom… oh if you get gum in your hair use peanut butter or ice to get it out… I have used this and it works… someone in my house gives the 5yr old gum and she always falls asleep with it in her mouth … and it ends up in her hair…lol
A plant remedy to keep bugs off… use pepper juice and mix with water in a spray bottle… all bugs have taste buds and if its hot they wont eat it…. spray on plants… any plants… this works great…
Tea Tree Oil. A friend recommended it for skin irritations and I’ve used it on a few rashes, insect bites, and she used it on poison ivy to take out the itch. When Compound W nor freezing worked to remove a child’s warts, we tried tea tree oil. It worked! Applied every day for a few weeks we saw results nothing else has managed.
“Get a cold, wet washcloth and put it on over your throat, then cover it with a dry towel.” People always think I’m weird when I tell them this one! I’m glad to see it here because I know it works! My mother and grandmother used this, and I have used it on my own children when they were young. I don’t know how it works, but I know it does.
If tea tree oil is applied to a small cut or abrasion as soon as possible, it will heal much faster.
“Lambs Ears” ` lovely low fuzzy-leafed plant is easy to grow and spreads beautifully. It needs at least partial sun. The leaves make wonderful bandages - they stick even less than the commercial dressings that are not supposed to stick to a wound. Just use some first aide tape to keep the leaf in place.
Treat an insect bite with Jewel weed - take a leaf, mush it up really well and just rub the juice on the itch. It really helps!
If you know your skin has been touched by poison ivy, oak or sumac, FIRST flush thoroughly with COLD water and then wash well with soap and warm water and rinse thoroughly. The cold water tends to wash away the urishol (itch causing oil.)
If you can keep an aloe Vera plant handy, if you get a burn in the kitchen, immediately break off part of a leaf and rub the juice on the burn. Often, the burn won’t even show up, but you must do it right away.
Living in the South and being an avid gardener I’m often afflicted with severe insect and ant bites. I carry a spray bottle of kitchen or bathroom cleaner containing bleach with me in the garden. When I’m bit, I just spray and the itch or sting VANISHES! It’s amazing.
Sinus Trouble: This is what I’ve found that works. I have gotten some of the same advice from my physician’s assistant and doctor. Boil a pan of water on the stove. Take it off the stove and put in on a trivet on the table. Take a towel and put it over your head and the pan and breathe the steam. A super hot washcloth placed on the face where the sinus pain is also helps. I also suggest taking ibuprofen as it helps to reduce the swelling. My dh finds using his neti pot helps. I like to use my saline nasal spray. It often flushes out whatever pollen or dust that is bothering me quickly.
Sty: If you have a clogged tear duct or a sty, put a hot washcloth on it. It helps your tear duct relax and let go of the dirt and you will get well faster.
At the very first sign of a BLADDER INFECTION, drink one cup of strong burdock root tea. This remedy is very effective if taken early on. It is not recommended to drink more than one cup as this herb is a diuretic and will disturb your electrolyte balances. Burdock root is available at your health food store and is inexpensive.
If you rub with alcohol to bring down a fever - be sure to rub down the body (direction of head to toes). If you rub up (toes to head) the fever could rise.
I have found that Epsom salts are helpful with many types of rashes. I am allergic to so many things - when I have a small rash that I know isn’t ivy or sumac - I will use a compress with hot water and epsom salt. It stops the itching and helps draw what’s causing the rash out of the skin. The rashes stop itching and heal much quicker.

It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.

Good Morning!
Rosey.......what kind of dogs do you have? Post a picture of your dogs, I love dogs. I print up all my greeting cards using the american greetings.com and usually use pictures of dogs on the cards.
Mil went back into surgery yesterday because of leaks in her colon. They had to place a permanent bag on her so she'll be in Rochester for a while longer.
This is the first year we've had to fight with the bunnies, remember our cute little rabbit Bruce saved from Charlies mouth we named Benji Bunny? He's 1/2 grown and eating all my petunias. We've replanted them twice and he got to them again last night. He also ate all the cukes coming up in the garden. (We see his mama and little tiny baby sister around too). I'm guessing it's not all Benji's fault, there's probably a zillion of them around. Bruce is going to Home Depot today to buy chicken wire to fence in the whole garden plus 3 of my flower beds. We don't want to shoot the rabbit, they are just too cute!
Lynn...I was thinking of you last night when I couldn't sleep, where do you find all that ambition? I'm guessing being a widow gives you time to reach for more dreams and fulfilling them. Good for you!
I have a hard time taking care of our acreage, chickens, garden, rabbits, and cooking for hubby to get much else done. But then I don't have your ambition to do anything else either.
Isabella.. I'm doing terrible on my calories, I haven't been on the scale but I know I'm up because my jeans are getting tight. The one thing I haven't stopped doing, my exercises. It only takes me about 13 minutes but I do 10 pound weights and use the bands every morning but Sunday.Last night I started my circuit workout for the first time since Christmas and today my shoulders are sore. I'm so out of shape using the resistance bands it's pathetic. Got get with the program.I know if I miss a morning it gets easier to miss the following morning as well.
Hi Linda......how's it going? Let us know how it goes tomorrow.
At least he has finally decided to refer me to a Respiratory Disease specialist and I go to see this new guy on Thursday. I also have an appointment next Monday for a CAT scan.
We're cleaning out the basement, Tiffany is having a rummage sale next week and we're getting rid of lots of stuff we'll never use.
I don't want our daughter to ever go through what we did with MIL's house. She had 80 years of junk, we filled up two large dumpsters!
I need to get some things listed on ebay this morning, I better get to it.
Hi Karen Mo......how's your dad this morning?

I found this recipe on the allrecipes.com site this morning and it sounds good. I'm going to make it after I string up some climbing flowers outside and fence in more plants. The rabbits got one of my hostas last night, I'm beginning to think they're not so cute:( I have many hostas in my shade garden and they don't touch those. The one they got last night was just a baby hosta, they must taste better?
We're still scrounging (had to look that word up to see if I spelled it right)through the house and attic looking for stuff to get rid of. I posted 1/2 dozen vintage items on ebay yesterday, if they don't sell I'll put them on the rummage sale. The trouble with rummage sales is everyone expects you to give the collectibles away for little or nothing. We accumulate so much since we live in the country and can't have rummage sales out here. I better get my day started, you all have a great day.
P.S. Linda, how did it go yesterday?

Good Morning everyone,
It's been awhile. Lots of stuff happening, just life, I guess.
I've been reading all the posts, catching up. Too many to reply to, but sounds like every one has their up's and down's, huh? Again, life.
I was supposed to work today, but it's DGD's dance recital, so I got another nurse to work for me. Some things you just can't miss, and when they are gone, they are gone!
I have a new complaint! sounds like it's endless, I know. This time I have a torn rotator cuff. I went for an MRI yesterday, get the results back in a few days hopefully and find out what to do about it. If the tear isn't bad it's just injections and therapy, if it's too bad, maybe surgery to repair the tear. It's always something, isn't it.
Good thing, I am ok with food. I can't exercise and that is a big problem. I really miss it. With my back, lots of times I couldn't walk for exercise, but I could always count on lifting weights. Won't be doing that for awhile. But we all do what we have to do with what we've got.
The weather here is still warm one day cool the next. Flowers and tomatoes are planted and looking ok, but aren't going to grow much as long as this weather continues.

Good Morning!
We had a record dry May in our part of Minnesota so we're happy it's raining right now, suppose to have 4 blessed days of rain. Our garden looks good despite the lack of rain. (Except where Benji bunny ate off the tops of my cucumbers). DH has a fence around part of the garden and I put chicken wire around some of my flower plants, it doesn't look very pretty but maybe I can take it down after the plants gets bigger? Maybe someone can advise me on that, this is the first year we've have a rabbit problem.
Nice to hear from you Freda and sorry about your health problems. It's too bad our bodies start breaking down after a certain age, I have back problems too and if I stay on my feet too long my heel pain acts up. But it's better than the alternative, pushing up Daisy's.:D
Linda..........what's happening?
Rosey... You are a good friend to the critters, I told DH about your moose/baby and he wanted to know what part of Alaska you live in. then we take them miles from our house and set them free..maybe that would work for y
Glynne...The 1st thing I thought about when you said your parents were coming for a whole week was how to entertain them and what to cook!:chef:You must have some fun loving parents, I personally would only enjoy that if they stayed in a motel or I had a huge house. I'm a bit of a private person, surprising since I come from a family of 7.
Lynn...What's the most interesting thing you've found out about your ancestors? Are you related to anyone famous? How far back can you trace your family and how did you decide which family to trace, your mom's side or dad's?
We're now having our rummage sale at my brothers and turning it into a 5 family rummage sale. I still have lots to mark so I better get at it. Have a great week-end:dancer:

VERY sad today. Last night had to have my sweet cat (15 years old in April) put down.
Check back tomorrow.

Lynn, so sorry about your cat. They are such good companions. Hope you're feeling more like yourself soon.
Well, it's been a few days since I posted. I'm up to my ears in wedding shower preparations. The big day is tomorrow at 2 pm. I'm surrounded by cakes, cookies, dips, chips, crackers and sandwiches. My house looks like it was vandalized because of the mess everywhere. I can't wait to get back to a normal day and night. I made the dearest little cakes for the shower. When they are all set up tomorrow I'll take pictures and let you see them. Must go to bed as I have a day's work left to do when I get up and we have to be at the church hall at 10 am to decorate. Catch you all tomorrow night when it's all history.

Good Morning!
Lynn...I'm so sorry about Kitty, We lost our 'Black Pearl' last winter, she was around 14 years old and very sweet. I still think of her often as you will your best friend. The hardest is not seeing her in the window watching the birds.:stress:
Isabella...You're going to crash pretty soon! What wonderful memories you have given your kids to look back on. Let us know how everything goes.
This is a list of foods you don't have to buy organic!
According to the Environmental Working Group, these are the least contaminated fruits and vegetables.
Afraid I have no goo news to share -- see what happens after the CAT scan tomorrow and then the Bronchoscopy that I'm having on Tuesday.

Hi there!
I'm so tired I could fall asleep just sitting here. We had 2 3/4" rain last night with crashing thunderstorms and lots of lighthing. Charlie our dog hates thunder and kept trying to crawl into bed.
I'm looking forward to hearing about Isabella wedding, I'll bet she's tired too.
Rosey...I told DH where you lived and he said that's a great location to be. He's a hunter and always gets jealous of anyone that has moose or any other big game in their back yard.
I just priced all my fat clothes for the rummage sale, good riddance. I started back on calorie counting today, my jeans are getting tight around my middle, I hate that! Maybe I'll join the accountability today.

We had a great time at the shower yesterday. Lots of fun, gifts and enough food to feed a small country. Here are a few pictures of the cakes and the centerpiece.
I'm having trouble adding pictures. Don't know what's going on. Going to try again. :(

Good Morning!
I can't add pictures anymore either. I had problems posting recipes too and the management here said Internet Explorer causes problems and to switch to Firefox. I did and now can use the copy/paste but my American greeting cards wouldn't work and I use that site for printing up all my cards not to mention the wedding invitations. So I removed the Firefox, can now use the greeting card site but no longer copy/paste here. What to do? :dizzy:
Isabella......I did see your pictures but had to join to see them. Looks like you had a fantastic turnout and the cake was very beautiful and professional looking. Nice work!
I need to get some clothes out on the line before it rains again, have a good one.

Bobbi, I don't know what's going on as I'm using Firefox. I've posted pictures before. I'll get my 2 sons together this weekend and see if they can figure out what's going on. Now, I have a question for you. I can't see any links in my post to pictures. I tried to get them in but it didn't work. Do you see a link? (This is like something out of the Twilight Zone, ha, ha.)
I loved doing the cakes. Fiancee was thrilled with hers. I was kind of thrilled myself. It was the first time I'd used fondant icing. I used that on the little doll cakes.
I put on a couple of pounds from the weekend but hope to get rid of those by weigh in day. It's raining today and it's not a nice summer rain at all. More like autumn and chilly to boot. But I'm sitting here in shorts as DH put on the wood furnace and it's as hot as the fires of **** inside. I've got windows and patio doors open to cool the place down. I'm hoping to start a mock up of the bridesmaid's dresses today. I've just got to get motivated to stretch out the material and pin on the pattern, cut and sew. Then the girls can try those on and I can adjust on the cheap material ($2 a metre, which is about 4 inches longer than a yard) and save the satin lined crepe for the final cut out. ($15 per metre)
My house is still in a mess. I got some cleaned up yesterday but was so tired I fell asleep with a stack of paper plates in my lap. I was getting them ready for the wedding, adding a paper doily to each one to lay the wedding cake on. I woke up holding a plate and doily in each hand. I figured it was time to go to bed. I slept til after 9 this morning. Fortunately, Mom was sleeping so I got a good rest. Oh, well it will all be over in less than 5 weeks. Then I'll hire a backhoe to come clear out the kitchen. :D There are little spots of "tidy" showing through so there's hope things will get back to what I call normal.
I think any regularity in exercise is going out the window. I've come to the conclusion that it takes not only the physical activity of actually exercising but there is the bigger element of mentally doing the exercise. Right now my mental capabilities are stretched to the limit preparing for this wedding. I'm struggling just to keep from eating everything in sight. So if I can keep my foods and eating under some kind of control I'll let the exercise be hit and miss until I can concentrate on losing weight in a serious manner.
Wow, I'm pouring my thoughts out, ha, ha. Must go and get the dishes in the washer and clear a spot to lay out the dress material. Have a good day everyone.

You'd think that the longer I was at my new job the more I would learn and the easier it would get so I would be back to having time to post at least during my lunch right? Hah! The more I learn the more I see that needs attention so the bigger my job gets. (I think that was more a brag than a complaint :D ) Pretty cool to be tackling big new projects and learning so many new things at this stage in my life. Good thing they value maturity...
Lynn - I'm so sorry about the loss of your dear furry friend.
Done pretty well getting back in the groove with my exercise program but I'm still fighting with those same dumb 5 lbs. Gotta figure out the right combination to kick me off this darned long plateau pretty soon or I'm going to go crazy! Sometimes when they are creeping back on I get down right panicky! Tried going clear back to the exact menu that worked so great last year but no luck. Do you suppose not having the nicotine in my system anymore could have changed my physiology enough that I need a whole different food combination?

How does everyone clean out your computer keyboard? I wish they had a opening on the end so you could tip it and dust & debris would fall out.
I wish you could all see my beautiful Peonies, I have a dozen bushes and the flowers are burgundy. I can't post pictures anymore here because of my browser. I'm curious now, what browsers do you all use? Isabella, you said Firefox. Why did you choose that browser?
Do any of you print out you own greeting cards? Do you use American Greeting cards?
I'm full of questions today, I would like to clear up my 3 FC's problems with posting recipes and pictures and would like to know what works for everyone. My Internet Explorer worked in the past but things have changed and they do not work anymore on this site?
I'm better get going, I have 4 dozen buns to fill with deli meat and other kinds of spreads. Our 4 family rummage sale is tomorrow and Saturday and we'll need food to sustain us. I started counting calories last Monday, I suppose I'll have to take a two day break since we'll be working the sale for two days. What else do you do when there are no customers?

Hi Isabella, I ABSOLUTELY agree with you – this journey we are on requires a LOT of mental focus. Times of stress/vacation/illness… take our focus off the eating/shopping/meal-planning/meal-preparation/exercising. As long as we get back to a focus on ourselves (and each other) afterward, we will all do fine.

Hi YoYo,
If you take a look at my Accountability Thread, you will see that I lost my first 10 pounds in 3 months, my second 10 pounds in the next 3 months, my third 10 pounds in the next 5 months, and I’ve been fighting for the next 10 pounds since February of 2008! Not sure if my body found a weight that it likes, or if I now require a lot more exercise and a lot fewer calories to lose, or if I’ve just gotten less dedicated since I’m down around 150.
The good news is we are not gaining!

Hi Gayle – never feel bad about your feelings. We can regret certain actions, but cannot help our feelings. The parent-child relationship can be REALLY tough. After my vacations with my DD and her husband, I’m sure they are just as tired of me as I am of them!

I want to wait. I know that another cat would be company, but it would not replace the 15-year “relationship” that I had with Princess Di & it’s a LOT easier to travel when I do not have a pet at home.

Bobbi ~ about cleaning out your keyboard ~ my husband has a spray can he got at the computer store (probably could get it to at like office max or office depot) it is air under pressure and has a thing like a skinny straw attached to the nozzle and you spray that in the cracks and it blows the dust and crumbs out. I also found (i think it was in the sewing catalog) some vacuum attachments that fit on the end of the vacuum hose and are small ~ used to clean the keyboard. Hope that helps.

Hi Rosey,
Going to my scrapbooking group today. About the sleep study - I know several people who have had the study (including my DH). All who had the study found that they had sleep apnea. Few were able to tolerate sleeping with the mask/machine.
My cortisone shot yesterday was sore but I am VERY glad I had it. This morning was able to up the grade & the speed on the treadmill with NO pain!
Going to Japanese restaurant tonight with my DD & SIL. Need to go online & see what are the best choices (lo cal/lo fat/lo carb).

Hello all,
Well, mom and dad made it back home safely. Their arrival was rugged. They missed their connecting flight - were misdirected by airline staff - then couldn't make it back to the proper place on time. We were waiting and they didn't show up. Went to ask the people at the ticket counter if they could check the computer to see if they had made it on the flight or what had happened to them. They told us due to rules, they were not allowed to tell us anything. I felt like I wanted to cry. I told them that they were elderly and mom had alzheimers, but that didn't get me anywhere. My husband then asked to talk to the lady's supervisor and in some round-about way, without breaking the rules, he was able to let my husband know that they had been put on the next flight.
It was quite a week. Some of it fun, some not as much. I feel sad that for the first time, I was counting the days until they went home.
Hopefully as time passes, it will dim the not so good parts of the visit and I will look forward to getting to see them again.
Hope you all are having a good weekend.
Take care

Good Morning Golden Girls,
I know it's been awhile, hopefully I can get things back on track in my life.
I did read back a couple of pages, I'm sorry for the losses and tragedies that some have faced, and "atta girls" for those who have accomplished goals, and for those of you who are like me and have to get back to it..."let's go girls".
Well, my divorce is final. X is going to buy me out on the house, guess his mother is giving him that money too....lol. I don't care, I will just be glad to have him out of my life. I admit that at times I've been depressed, not over him, just because it's a new journey in my life, and at my age, it's going to be hard. But I can do it, with the Lord's help, everything will be fine. Mother is doing pretty good, I am getting thru one day at a time with her.
I haven't gained any weight back, but I have no idea why.......lol. I have started walking about 2 miles a day with a g/f, about 4 days a week. This morning it is raining, so I'm up to do my 30 minute strength training. My eating has been absolutely HORRIBLE, donut holes, ice cream, snacking, not regular meals, I fix for mother, then don't eat myself, then end up eating totally the wrong thing.
I had decided that this summer I was really going to concentrate on getting in shape. I have 6 wks left before we start back to school, I sure better get my boohiney in gear.......lol.
Oh, btw, I put some red streaks in my hair, altho it turned out more of a caramel color.......let me know what you think....I will change my photo and post a short note again.
Everyone have a great day!!

Hi  Had a houseful this weekend. DS and DIL and Baby were here and I was totally engrossed with my little darling boy. I haven't weighed as I'm afraid but I will soon. Spent yesterday sewing the two bridesmaids dresses. Had to do it when DIL was here as she's one of the maids (matrons I should say,). I have both dresses sewed up and have one ready for hemming. The other dress needs binding at the neck and arms and then hemming. I'm hoping to see the end of that by the time I go to bed tonight.
BTW, I saw the canned pressure air at Walmart in the stationery department.
Hi Susan. Good to see you've survived the divorce and doing better.

Good Morning Girls!
I'm typing on a spotlessly clean keyboard, I found the 3M Dust Remover spray can in Walmart.
Susann...I was wondering if you fell in a hole:D. We're all so busy in the summer, our garden is looking fantastic, my peonies are still blooming and beautiful. We did have to fence in some of my flower beds that has petunias in them, the rabbits love them.
Isabella...our DD had a secret wedding this weekend so my SIL's feet evidently warmed up. They plan on having a big BQ in August with lots of people over to celebrate the occasion. I told her she should have eloped from the beginning but mom's don't know anything. I just can't see making a big deal of 2nd marriages.
Lynn...I seems to be drifting up too, now I need to drop 9 pounds. My jeans are getting uncomfortable. At the 2 day rummage sale we had all kinds of sandwiches on buns, rum cakes, rum cupcakes, banana bread, sloppy joes, chocolate covered donuts, etc. Guess what I ate?
ALL OF IT, WHAT A PIG! :ink: :frypan::ink:
Hi everyone else, where's the Karen's?
My printer died yesterday and it's only 11 months old, was $94.97 at Walmart. (Now $99.97) I took it back yesterday since it has a Year warranty on it. Of course they wouldn't do anything about it. I called the 800 number for Hewlett-Packard and what a nice company they are , it pays to buy a well known brand. They walked me through all kinds of tests to get the printer to work, then decide they needed to look at it to see where the problem is. They are sending out a new printer for free, same kind so I can use the new cartridges I just purchased and installed. I'll have it in 3 days! Then I'm to send back my old printer in the same box and they will provide a postage paid label. I :hug:love Hewlett-Packard.
I'm off to town, catch ya all tomorrow.

Good Morning everyone! Gosh, it has been a long time since I've posted anything---sorry! We are still unpacking and trying to figure out what goes where. My son and his family have been here with us for the last few weeks and will be here until after the 4th of July then will be heading back to Florida. I really haven't been back on any eating or exercise plan yet. Between unpacking, going to visit my Dad at least once a day, and my son being such a good cook-----well, I just haven't kept track right now. Don't think I am to off but not willing to check it yet.
My Dad is still doing OK. He seems to be getting weaker but still always has a joke for us and is usually in good spirits. I worry when he won't eat very much but the nurses say that is all part of it. I cancat least get him to eat some ice cream when I go! Thanks to all of you for all the thoughts and prayers.
I don't have a lot of pictures yet but here is one of Tim and I in front of our new house. Once things settle down a bit more I will try to post more.
Take care and have a Great Day!

Nice to hear from you Karen31, I like the looks of your new home. How many bedrooms do you have? Is it right in town?
We're off to Rochester to visit MIL, she's still in the hospital and we haven't returned all the wedding stuff we purchased a couple of weeks ago. It's a good day to go since we have rain predicted all day, see ya all:wave:

Thanks so much Bobbi - I gotta say I am pretty darned proud of myself. Although I almost feel like I cheated somehow - honestly I had one bad week and after that I seemed to just shrug off the cravings like they were nothing. If I could figure out what the magic words were I'd bottle them and get everyone to quit.
[QUOTE=ladyinweighting;2781052]Hi YoYo,
If you take a look at my Accountability Thread, you will see that I lost my first 10 pounds in 3 months, my second 10 pounds in the next 3 months, my third 10 pounds in the next 5 months, and I’ve been fighting for the next 10 pounds since February of 2008! Not sure if my body found a weight that it likes, or if I now require a lot more exercise and a lot fewer calories to lose, or if I’ve just gotten less dedicated since I’m down around 150.
The good news is we are not gaining!
[QUOTE]
Quite honestly I think it's a little of all of the above - No matter how I try to stay focused as soon as I see 144 on the scale, I undo the whole thing by eating poorly - not even binging as some sort of reward, just making poor choices or only making half hearted attempts at measuring my portions. I would truly be happy to make 140 but I keep my goal at 135 just to keep myself from talking myself into a higher "red line" weight. Amen to the "not gaining" I've been sorely tempted to heave a sigh and sneak over to the maintainer's side of things but I know I still have work to do and would be short changing myself if I threw in the towel now.

Hi YoYo,
I agree. My strategy is to stay in the "losing weight" mindset for the rest of my life. Otherwise, I know I will gain. I may never get to 140/145, but I will keep trying.

Morning!
I have about 5 weird mole-like spots on my midriff and under my boobs that need checking out. I think it's just old age spots but DH insist I have it checked out. My appointment is this morning, then I'm going over to MIL's place and start packing up her stuff. She's still in the hospital and will have to go into a nursing home permantly when she gets out. That will make it the 5th move in 2.5 years.:dizzy:
Unfortunately DH is an only child and all the responsibility is on us.
Isabella...I installed Firefox but had to take it right back out, it won't work with my 'American Greeting cards' site. :?:
I can post articles or recipes on 3 fat chicks anymore but I'd rather give that up than my greeting cards. I make birthday cards for everyone with their pictures right on the card. It's especially fun if I can get pictures of everyone's baby/youth pictures to put on the cards.
I'm off to the doc, catch ya all tomorrow.
Where is Karen3? Is she sick?

Good Morning Girls!
I am now officially on the band wagon to go to your dermatologist ASAP. Listen up,:listen: Yesterday I was zapped about 40 times on my chest, midriff, arms and hairline for pre-cancer cells. Ad soon as we get MIL home and moved into new nursing home I'll insist that DH goes too. He has the same looking spots on his arm, chest and back. The procedure takes about 5 minutes and only stings for a very short time. Eventually they will scab up and fall off so the new skin can grow, it's not gruesome looking at all. Well........I better wait a week before I give you the final word on that. Doc said it would take 2-3 weeks before I get back to normal. On that note I'll say good-bye.

Hi Bobbi & Everyone,
I ABSOLUTELY agree. Last week, my DD (45) and her DH (62) went to local hospital for a skin cancer screening. Turned out she has cancer on 3 places on her face. Must use a cream that will burn off top layers of skin.
The type of cancer she has can be handled as long as it is caught early. Otherwise, it is VERY dangerous.
She really only went to the screening to keep her hubby company.

We're having DD and new SIL over for Father's day today, we're grilling turkey tenderloins wrapped in bacon. Have any of you tried those yet? They are really delicious and you can remove the bacon before eating them for lower calories, the flavor stays on the meat.
Lynn...I would never have thought I'd get skin cancer because of my complexion, I have olive colored skin and have never burned in my life. But I still had sun damage, probably due to laying out in the sun in my younger years and working outside without proper sun protection/lotion in later years.
The type of cancer she has can be handled as long as it is caught early. Otherwise, it is VERY dangerous.
I need to get my shower in and fill in the cracks on my face with make-up so I don't scare our company today.:fr:

I've been so busy all week that I just now tore off a week's worth of daily Maxine jokes on my desk calendar.

Monday:
Here's a tip to avoid sunburn: Don't pretend two strips of cloth are a swimsuit.
Tuesday: I do my grocery shopping early in the day...before they run out of pizza samples.
Wednesday: I don't look at it as camping so much as feeding the mosquitos.
Thursday: If it weren't for fishing, gravity would be the only thing tugging on my bobbers.
Friday:Know what "BBQ" really stands for? "Burn Burgers Quick."
Saturday:Family reunions really make you sit back and appreciate those other 51 weekends.

We had tornado's all around us last night, scary! The humidity is going to be high today with 92 degrees temps, the news just said it'll feel like 100 degrees. That's hot for Minnesota, DH is going to turn the air conditioner on. I have to go out and weed around the birdbath this morning, the weeks should pull out easy since we had so much rain last night.
I joined a thread on 3 fc's that's working on ridding cupboards/freezers of old stuff and not buying anything new except for fresh foods. My breezeway freezer is used just for frozen garden produce, breads, etc. and it's really starting to look bare. We're reporting everyday what we're using up, it sure motivates me. This am I pulled out a frozen 4 cup package of apples, now what should I do with it?

Awhile back he suggested everyone bundle up junk mail that comes with a prepaid postage stamp and send it back to them, and any other junk mail you can stuff in there. I have since done that and the credit card company that was the worst is not sending applications anymore. Pretty smart thinking on Andy's part.

Hello Girls. I'm run off my feet with wedding preparations. Less than 3 weeks to go. Had a baking and cooking marathon last week and managed to gain a few pounds. :( I'm working on decorations today and thank goodness they are not edible. And I don't have anything bought to wear to the wedding. Such bad luck with finding an outfit I like in the right size. All either too small or too large. Not because of an odd size--just none in the store. I need a size 10 or a 12 and everything is gone. I did get a nice summer print skirt yesterday that I wanted in a green print but had to take a blue print because I couldn't get the green in a size 10. Then I couldn't get a nice top to go with it. Now I have to go back to the only other store that carried the kind of top I want. It wasn't open on Sunday when I was shopping. If I do find a blouse to match I do have almost new heels to wear. I wore them to first DS's wedding a few years ago and they'll match this skirt perfectly. On the bright side I can find lots of things I don't like in my size so I could buy something I don't like and wear that. I'm sure someone will like it on me. :D
Bobbi, funny you mentioned you are trying to eat everything from your freezer and cupboard. So am I with the freezer. I'm running out of storage space for wedding food and so I'm trying to eat everything out of the freezer so I'll have more space. Not quite the same reason but it's giving me a little more space every day.
I'll try and post a few more times before the wedding to try and keep me on track. Then I have 3 weeks off from taking care of mom as my sister is going to take her home the day after the wedding. So we'll be visiting our dear little grandson. :)
Have a good evening everyone.

 Hi all
Gosh Linda, I sure hope you feel better soon!
Believe it or not, I'm having quite a struggle trying to find people to build my department. You would think with this economy people would be knocking down the door for a job. I actually had one guy that was pretty qualified walk out after 2 weeks because I put him on the schedule to work on Sunday  I did tell him we were a 24/7 operation before I even offered him a spot and he said he was fine with it....
On the bright side, I feel more on track than I have in a long time. Doing much better at logging my food (even on the weekends :carrot::carrot: ) and am seeing a difference. Almost afraid to say anything lest I jinx it but.... I may have hit on something. I read an article about why it's so difficult to lose that last 10 lbs. The article said that most people continue to eat the same number of calories they were eating while losing but since their bodies weigh less, they don't use as many calories in day to day activities as they did when they were heavier so the loss stalls. The light bulb went off and I dug out some old wrist and ankle weights. I wear them around the house while I'm doing all my regular daily routine stuff - I honestly think hauling around a simple extra 15 lbs is working wonders. I feel like I'm getting a real workout just pushing the vacuum. Not to mention those weights are a constant reminder to stay on plan....
Anyone else ever tried something like this with any luck?

Good Morning!
DH is traveling about 125 miles north to look at a 1932 Chevy car that's advertised for sale. He found one like it 48 years ago and his dad wouldn't let him buy it because it used too much oil. He said his dad cheated him out of buying it so now he's going to buy it.
Our neighbor brought over a huge bowl of strawberries the other day, I made fresh strawberry pie for Father's Day. I made it with diet strawberry jello but real sugar because DD won't eat sugar substitute. (Pssst, she didn't know it was Diet jello and I didn't tell)
Our neighbor just brought over another big bowl of strawberries, this time I'm making it with Stevia so I won't feel guilty eating it. DH just has to keep me away from the crust.:frypan:
YoYo.....That's a good idea with the weights. I started putting my elastic exercise bands on my computer desk so I can get in a few exercises while I read email, etc.

Joy...You have a lot of responsibility with your job too, Which is good, I am manager of the Dietary Department of a hospital… which makes my struggle a challenge some days. That should keep you motivated to drop a couple of pounds since you're the boss.

Yoyo, what a great idea about the weights. I'm going to add them to my shopping list for today. I'm not doing so great with my last few pounds (even when not sampling wedding food) so that might be just the kick start I need to get going again.
Bobbi, I love strawberries. I bought 4 pounds on Sunday and we ate the first two pounds by Monday just out of the hand. Today I started on the second two pounds and will buy more today. Yum. I love them with rhubarb in pie but the crust is the killer.
Must run. Have a bundle of things to finish before I get to go shopping.

Obese diabetes patients who have gastric bypass weight loss surgery often show dramatic improvement in blood sugar control within days, long before significant weight loss occurs.
The reversal of type 2 diabetes tends to occur much more rapidly than with gastric banding, and a new study may help explain why.
The findings could also advance the search for better diabetes treatments that target the small intestine and not the pancreas, researchers say.
"It is increasingly clear that the intestine is not just a conduit for food transit," gastric bypass surgeon Francesco Rubino, MD, tells WebMD. "We now know that it is also a very important organ for the regulation of glucose."
Intestine Produces Glucose
Several recent studies have suggested that weight loss surgery is a more effective treatment for type 2 diabetes in obese people than standard treatments for the disease.
Because weight loss alone cannot explain the rapid remission of disease in many gastric bypass patients, researchers have looked for other causes.
One theory has been that surgery alters the expression of hormones that help control appetite, blood sugar, and weight.
But studies designed to test this hypothesis have proven contradictory, diabetes researcher Gilles Mithieux tells WebMD.
In their newly published study, reported in the September issue of the journal Cell Metabolism, Mithieux and colleagues looked elsewhere for answers.
"We know from earlier work that the small intestine can produce glucose," he says. "We showed that with gastric bypass surgery you essentially double the capacity of the intestine to do this."
By studying mice treated with either gastric bypass or banding, researchers confirmed that the bypass operation was associated with increased production of glucose, or blood sugar, in the small intestine, while gastric banding was not.
Gastric bypass surgery essentially produces a "double intestine," Mithieux says. The portion of the small intestine that is closest to the stomach is bypassed so that it no longer received nutrients. The lower small intestine is then attached to the stomach where it becomes the main nutrient receiver.
By surgically repositioning the lower small intestine, which usually does not produce much glucose, it ramps up intestinal glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity, he says.
Treating Diabetes With Surgery
Rubino tells WebMD that the findings offer important insights into the role of the small intestine in blood sugar regulation.
"This doesn't tell the whole story, but it appears to be an important piece of the puzzle," he says.
The gastric bypass surgeon is a strong advocate of using the surgery as a first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes -- a position that remains controversial.
He directs the diabetes surgery center at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
"Surgery promises to be one of the most powerful resources we have to fight this disease," he says. "I don't think it will be the answer for everyone. But for patients with the right profile, the results can be remarkable."
Rubino believes that the surgery can help not just diabetic patients who are morbidly obese, but also people who are overweight but don't weigh enough under current guidelines to be considered for the gastric bypass procedure.
"We hope to study this to see if surgery is better than conventional treatment in patients who are moderately obese or just overweight," he says.

Hopefully, my last downer post for a while - My DD was VERY sick today - she took some pain pills in the middle of the night without eating (her face is burning and blistering from the cream) and the pain meds made her sick all day today.
Also, today is the 3rd anniversary of the death of my Dear Husband.
I will be VERY happy when this month is over!

Good Morning!
It's cold this a.m., Brrrrrr! I spent over 3 hours weeding the garden yesterday and I still have the back ache to prove it.
Yesterday was 'D' Day for me, yep! Back to counting calories to
re-lose my last 10 pounds. I'm down 3 pounds this morning but that's definitely not fat, just water. Now I have a question for you, do you add the calories/carbs eaten during the night on your next day's intake or the day's before? My back ached so much in the night that it kept waking me, finally I got up and had a small bowl of fiber one cereal with a little skim milk. (That put me right back to sleep, usually does) So I'm wondering if I should pretend like that was an early breakfast or a late night snack. I would only have to guess at the calories, I didn't measure anything.
Lynn...What's the story on your DD, was she a sun lover and got the skin cancer from that? I had our doc zap many spots off my midriff, chest, hair line and arms a couple of weeks age. The spots on my midriff are never exposed to the sun so I couldn't have gotten them from the sun. Is her cancer only on her face and how long did she go before going to the doctor? I just said a little prayer for you and her, it's so hard to sit by and watch your loved ones in pain. My grandson has to have more surgery on his jaw, he wasn't suppose to use his teeth/jaws for a few weeks but it healed up so quickly that he has scars on it and can't move his jaws. It hurts me so much to see anything happen to him just like you Lynn watching your DD. I'm so sorry.
My DD is REALLY suffering - breaks my heart. She must use a cream that is burning off the skin on her face to deal with the cancer. She's on day 5 - 9 more days to go.
Glynne...I second that statement about being here to talk about each others concerns. Do you have to work over the 4th of July? I can't remember, are you a nurse?

DH is off to pick up a wood chopper, he had to order it because everyone was sold out. We have a zillion trees on our acreage and the Blue Spruce always have bottom branches that die. Wood chips are so expensive and now we'll be able to make our own with our never ending supple of dead branches.
I'm going the opposite direction this morning, Wal*Mart is calling my name. I have DH's prescription to pick up and hopefully the Kandy Cantaloupe is still on sale, they are delicious!

 A quick run through this early, early morning. I should be asleep but I'm not. Less than 2 weeks to the wedding and then hopefully some rest for the weary. Ha, ha.
