20-Somethings - 10,000 steps anyone?

So I've decided to break out Ye Olde Pedometer again and try to work my way up to 10,000 steps. It's about 5 mi/day. Last time I tried, I got myself up to 7,000 and then left my pedometer at my brother's house in Arizona. Oops. This time, I have 2 of them for when I'm an idiot and leave one somewhere.
Here's the plan:
1) Record your steps daily for a week during regular activities.
2) After the 1st week, find the average number of steps you take in a day.
3) First day's goal = average + 500.
4) For each day, add 500 to the previous day to create the new goal until you reach 10,000 steps.
Anyone wanna join me?
*if you're looking for a pedometer and you're anything like me, it's best to go with the cheaper ones. Somehow I always manage to put them through the wash, drop them in the lake, or get thrown into the pool while wearing it. When I only pay $10 for it, I don't mind as much :)

Sounds like fun.. i will have to go get another pedometer.. I have no clue where my old one is.. I am game.. I do the same thing you do with the pedometers. I am always losing it or it falls on the ground and breaks..lol

If you use a pedometer you will be surprised how easy it is to reach 10,000 steps a day. I accidently put my pedometer in the washing machine and dryer, it still works, like Timex it takes a licking and still keeps ticking.

I've been wearing my pedometer everyday since Easter Sunday, April 12th. My goal was to walk one million steps in 90 days, that averages 11,111 steps a day. I was doing well, staying on track till I got bit by a dog on April 27. (didn't walk as much for several days) As of yesterday I've taken 409,088 steps in 44 days, averaging 9,297 steps a day. It's been interesting to keep track and see what activities contribute to my daily steps, many days I have to work at getting 10,000 steps a day.
I now plan on wearing my pedometer till I reach 1,000,000 steps, when ever that happens to be.

i would like to join but i dont have a pedometer. what kind do you all recommend. ive tried the jiggle ones and they seem very inaccurate, maybe im wrong idk lol

walmart should have them. k-mart, target etc. sporting goods stores have them too, but they charge a little more for the same brands. i actually got mine at sears on sale, it was $4.00. i was super excited because it's the same brand i got at the sporting good store for $15.00.

Count me in. I started wearing mine again yesterday. I did 10,003 yesterday and am at 7364 so far today.

My eating plan calls for 8-12,000 steps a day for optimal health... it can be hard to make that with infants and toddlers to take care of, but I've been getting close to that number daily. I LOVE my pedometer!

I should join. Most likely I only get about 2000 steps a day if that. I do home daycare and have a few babies, so I am playing on the floor most of the day.

yeah, I'm in the same boat as Sarah. I work from home and go to school a few days/week so the days I'm working I'm at the computer ALL day long. I have to really try to get over 5,000. That's why I figured it would be a good idea to start it again:)

Haley- hooray! be sure to take it OFF your clothes before you wash them. I know it sounds stupid, but I've lost a few to the washing machine (and a few cell phones too haha)

I did wash mine but it was OK after it dried out.

I am a HUGE fan of my pedometer. I didn't know what to buy so I looked on Amazon and saw that the Omron HJ 112 has over 1000 reviews. I bought it last spring at the start of my weight loss journey and besides diet, it is the single thing that made the biggest difference. The pedometer really kept me on track. Seeing those numbers increase every time I looked at it really motivated me to walk an extra lap around the parking lot or walk a few extra blocks to hit the next thousand. I found myself making laps around Walmart or the supermarket or even my apartment hallways just to up the step count. I knew that if I didn't hit my personal minimum number of steps each day, I wasn't being active enough to lose weight. I felt naked if I didn't have the pedometer clipped on me at all times.
The pedometer forced me to open my eyes and realize that my neighborhood is full of sidewalks that I never used. I found that I could walk instead of drive to the supermarket closest to me and gain 2000 steps roundtrip.
I dropped the pedometer so many times that it broke in October. I got lazy and didn't get it fixed even though it comes with a 1 year warranty. Sure enough, I stopped watching my activity level and some of the pounds have crept back. I just got a new one last week (ordered the same one) and realized how much less effort I've been putting forth for the past 8 months when I workout or walk without the pedometer vs when it's clipped on me. Never again will I be without the pedometer.

haleygirl - The Omron HJ 112 comes with a holder that clips easily to my pants or a skirt. It also tracks steps if you keep it your pocket, a purse or backpack, but I prefer to have it clipped at my waist so I can glance down at it and see how much I've walked.

so my first day I was only about 2500 steps because I worked and was at the computer all day. These last two days,however I was at 10100 and 11495. 10000 isn't so hard when you have the ability to move around your room! Who knew!
