Today was day two for me, so I'm still on level one. It was way harder since I'm sore from yesterday. I love the pain from after workouts, though. I just have to be careful not to overdo it.
Has anyone tried Jillian's "No More Trouble Zones," too? My friend's letting me borrow it (although she never even opened it...)

You love the burn too? I like it as long as I'm done working out!
Other people on the forum have tried No More Trouble Zones, and liked it. I hear that Jillian's other new release, the Boost Your Metabolism one, is a bit more difficult.

i haven't tried either - feel so behind the times! i might start one of those up after i'm done the 30 days.
one thing i really like about 30DS is that you're only doing the same workout for 10 days - and by day 10, i was really, really bored. do her other videos play the same kind of switch-it-up mind games as the 30DS to help you stay engaged?

I haven't tried them either actually. But I'm really excited to! I'm going to give them a go after the 30 day deal. It looks like we're on the same track!
I get bored easily too, which is why I can't stand cardio machines :dizzy:

me too. before doing the 30DS, i was mindlessly doing my 30-45 mins on the eliptical/treadmill, not seeing any changes...i figured that doing these squats/lunges/exercises i otherwise despise would be a good switch up. i'm hoping it pays off! i've already lost 1" from my bust, 0.5" from my waist, and 1" from my hips in Level 1 (which i did over 14 days, and lost all inches within the first week). i i lose that much in each of the levels, i will be on cloud nine!

I actually just started on Saturday and again yesterday, I'm confused about whether or not it's supposed to be a daily fitness routine...
I'm currently using it every other day but if it's suggested to do it every day I'd like to know, I want to do it right.
haha and level1 was intense for me too, the no breaks thing really stresses my body.

I think level 2 is more difficult because of the cardio is more intense, and so many of the moves are in the plank position.
I didn't think it was much harder yesterday, when I did it for the first time. But day 2, this morning, it kicked my butt. It took me longer to "recover" afterward.

so, just got home from work and am toying with the idea of doing L2 D2.

I totally agree. Kinda similar, I always push myself the hardest the last cardio section of the workout because I know I'll be done and don't have to last another 20 minutes!

i am in love with this program. i'm taking a day off today for no particular reason, other than i don't want to burn out. i don't take measurements until sundays, but all day i have been feeling like my stomach is trimmer - WOOHOO!
festivus
05-21-2009, 01:59 PM
So I just finished day 4 of level 2. Each day I've been able to do less and less when it comes to the upper body strength.
I've reduced my weights from 5 to 3 pounds on several of the exercises, and I still can't do it all the way through. So I throw in a few bicep curls as a rest and continue with the exercise.
Is anyone else having this issue? I know my muscles are tired from the previous day (I do 30DS 6 days in a row 1 day off), but I'm afraid I won't make progress.

Pardon me, but can I crash this thread briefly with a question?
I want to try the 30-Day Shred. But here's the deal. I live in a very small New York-area apartment. I do not have a lot of floor space. I've got room for a yoga mat & a few feet on either side. But I don't have a wide open central exercise studio space, if you know what I mean. Highly choreographed aerobics videos with grapevines & etc. aren't very doable for me at home.
Can someone help me out & let me know how much room you need to do Jillian's routines? It would be much appreciated. Much as I admire Jillian, I don't want to spend $ for a DVD I won't use.
festivus
05-22-2009, 01:17 PM
No problem! My living room is long and narrow, so I don't have a lot of space. If you have enough room for a yoga mat, you should be fine. The space I use is about 5 x 6 feet, but I don't use all of it. Basically, if you can stretch out into a push-up position, you're fine.
Good luck, it's a lot of work, but I think it's worth it!Congrats on reaching your goal!
saef
05-22-2009, 05:52 PM
Thanks so much, Festivus. I'm going to get this DVD next time I'm out shopping.
It feels good to reach goal, but I did it mainly through a lot of cardio work. I would like a routine that is more balanced. From what I've heard, 30-Day Shred is much more balanced & I could alternate between doing it & my cardio work.
Also, if you don't need a lot of floor space, I could take it with me on business trips, put it into my laptop & do it in my hotel room if I can't get to the hotel gym or if the hotel does not have a gym.

You know you're right, today I was able to complete all of the upper body strength with no breaks. I haven't been able to do that since day 1 on this level! But it is still very challenging to me.

thats amazing festivus!!!! my absolute HATED moves are the pendulum lunges. i always lose my balance and my knees kill during that one. the other one that i always hate are the planks where you hop in and out (not the jacks, the other one). again, my knees just start to hurt. i also think that i compensate by putting my butt in the air, and therefore not using my abs quite as much.
i love the chair squats, prob bc i used to do yoga multiple times a week and its a very popular move. that one is definitely the hardest on my arms, but i really like that. i use 2.5lb - 3.5lb weights throughout.
operation, it definitely definitely gets easier!!!
so level 2, day 5 done!
the easiest move in level 2 is definitely the skaters - i always feel like those are a real break!

Hey, no worries! as long as you get back on track, you can indulge once in a while!
The soreness gets better. When I first started 30DS, I began doing yoga in the evenings to helps stretch out my muscles. If you don't do a good job of stretching, you will feel very tight!

Hi all,
I just started this video today and it was really hard but really good. I like the intensity of it because I really feel like the half hour is doing something rather than with the cardio dance video I was doing before. I will probably hate it when I do day 2 tomorrow and feel all the muscles I worked today.

And I'm SORE. The first day I thought "hey, this is not so bad, except for the push-ups" but this morning I HURT, and now even picking up my water bottle for a drink is hurting my arm. It is making me very nervous for level 2 (in only 6 days!) so I thought I would sign on here and join in with some fellow sufferers. Also, I have not peeked at level 2, because exercise videos get so boring so fast without spoiling yourself, and I want to maintain the suspense... but will it be okay that I still only do about 10 push-ups and then have to modify from there?
Oh, on the upside, I have lost a couple of pounds since starting it, but it is hard to say if that is related to the video or not, since I am in the first month of my diet and thus have been losing pretty steadily anyway. Also, I have been walking and doing the elliptical in addition to the dvd, because I just dont think it is enough cardio, really.

Hi guys! I think I'm on day 13 of Level 2, I wasn't ready to move on yet. I took yesterday off because me knees were bothering me. I'm glad I did because I felt great working out this morning. I was still challenged but able to complete the whole thing confidently. I'm going to continue on level 2 tomorrow and Friday, but will move on to level 3 on Saturday. I'm a little anxious about it.
So I'm not really losing a lot of weight, all though I tend to go overboard on calories on the weekend. I'm fluctuating between 152 and 154, which is a step down from fluctuating from 153 - 156. My body does look much better, it looks like I've lost weight. I'm not really smaller though, no real inches lost, so I'm not sure what my body is up to!
avie
06-03-2009, 07:44 PM
hard to say festivus! i do think though that sometimes it takes our bodies a few weeks to adjust, and to show, and for the weight to really start coming off.
i also feel like i've lost way more inches than what i see in the measuring tape - but i think it's because my whole body is shrinking. for example, my back looks fabulous...but i only measure my chest and waist, so it prob doesn't show. i can definitely say that my clothes are fitting me way better.
i'm not sure if i'm going to do 30DS today...prob later while so you think you can dance is on, and then i'll do a pilates vid as well since i think the episode is 2 hrs!

Day 8, level one.
I am just so tired all the time lately. Where's the energy boost from all this fitness? Anyway, the shred is still going fine. I can feel the difference already in my arms and abs, though I can't see it. And I can do the first batch of pushups now, plus about four the second time , before I have to modify. But for the first time since I started this diet I have not lost weight all week. I am worn out and I overslept this morning and almost decided to shred tonight instead. I did it anyway, but it was close, and I was late for work but there is almost no chance I would have really shredded tonight. At this point exercise isn't enough of a habit for me that I can slack on my committment to myself. What do you all do when you just feel like you are only going through the motions?

But for the first time since I started this diet I have not lost weight all week. I am worn out and I overslept this morning and almost decided to shred tonight instead. I did it anyway, but it was close, and I was late for work but there is almost no chance I would have really shredded tonight. At this point exercise isn't enough of a habit for me that I can slack on my committment to myself. What do you all do when you just feel like you are only going through the motions?
If I get bored with my routine I try and mix it up with something new and fun, for instance I'll kayak or bike or try a new class. That way I'm still working out but it's different. That or I'll go through the goal albums/posts and just remind myself why I'm going through the motions... sometimes it's just what has to be done.

Unless it's habit already, there will definitely be challenging days. It is SO MUCH easier if you just don't think about it. When the alarm goes off, don't snooze, just get up and do it. The more you think about it, the more opportunity you give yourself to talk you out of exercising.
I had a weird moment this morning after I finished my last day of level 2 (day 15 or something like that). I thought to myself, will I be doing this for the rest of my life? Or will I get to a point where I can just work out a few days a week and maintain my fitness? Then I wondered how I would keep from getting bored, which is a major challenge for me because I do best when I am on a consistent program (but that can definitely be monotonous).
So, take it one day at a time, that's all you can do. Try and stay out of your mind, and just do it.

I just finished L1 D6 this morning and it's starting to feel like a routine, in a good way. Some of the workout is easier but that second round of pushups and the anterior lifts are still killing me. Did anybody find that those got any easier before day 10?
Also, I've been exhausted too but I'm finding that going to bed earlier during the week does help...I'm keeping my grandmother's hours during the week...up with the sun and asleep by 10. It's taking a bit to get used to.

level 2 day 1.... holy cow. I had to take 3 five second breaks, pausing the video so I didn't miss a beat. The plank position just doesn't agree with me and apparently it's 80% of level 2. I just always feel like my butt is in the air and when I try to level my back, my arms are no longer directly under me but forward a bit (like a push up) kjsdflskdjfsdklf. Idk if I'm in too confined a space or if my body just would rather look like a tipi but I need to figure it out :/

Thanks y'all - I think. I'll let you know in a week or so anyway. This workout is rough! I first heard about it here - I have my "fun workouts" that keep me going, but I wanted something to get more in the way of results faster. Especially my arms. I decided to try 30DS for the first time yesterday after two of my other 30 minute workouts. MISTAKE!!! I think I got through 4 minutes and then I died. Fortunately, the first set really is the roughest for me, so today doing it first I survived to the end. Day 1 down . . .
My DH works out of town, and I get to go see him in 26 days - I want results!

I just finished day 1 level 3!!!!! OMG It was SO hard. Hard in a different way than level 2. With level 2 I would get out of breath, but on level 3 my muscles feel exhausted before the 30 seconds or minute is up. This is really going to help me take it up a notch. There's a few moves that I'm not sure I'll ever be able to do unmodified, but that's ok.
I lost another pound and a half!!! I'm almost put of the 150's!!!!!! I'm so excited because I think I'm finally figuring my crazy body out. I looked in the mirror yesterday when I was dressing, and for the first time in a LONG time, I thought I looked good. :carrot:

Hi everyone, I'd like to join you guys. My name is Jocelyn and I've posted here at 3FC before, but I can't remember my username (or maybe my account was deleted?).
Anyway, my husband and I are starting 30 Day Shred today. We've been doing the Couch to 5K program as well and will be running our first 5K on June 20. I thought it would be fun to have some people to talk to about 30DS.

the other thing i did today was preview jillian michaels' burn fat boost metabolism. it looked like a 60 minute 30DS to me - it was insane! i was thinking that after i'm done level 3, i might move onto that, but only do 3-4 circuits instead of all 5?

Avie, you can do it, just try to stay open minded! The moves I found most difficult were: sumo squat jumps, rockstar jumps, mountain climbers and jumping lunges. They were exhausting, definitely muscle fatigue. But this level FLEW by compared to level 2.
I want to transition to Jillian's other dvd's when I'm done with level 3.

If it hadn't been that I have told so many people I was going to do it every day for thirty day I would have skipped it, so thank you, chicks! It was my best shred yet! I even did almost all the pushups and I survived those anterior raises! I feel ready for a new buttkicking tomorrow with level two! Wish me luck!

Congrats on sticking with it! Just finished L1 Day 2. Very mad at myself. 3 months ago I could breeze through 30 or pushups easily (modified, but still . . .) Why do I let myself slack off?
Sylvied
06-08-2009, 08:54 AM
That's the only problem I find with exercise videos, you can slack off a bit and no one will notice. I think I've fixed that by working out at the same time as my husband. Not that he would yell or anything if I slacked but just having the presence of another person keeps me from cheating.
I'm on to L2 tomorrow as well... a little nervous.

It's exciting isn't it!! I'm wearing pants that I haven't worn in month's, and my tops are fitting looser :carrot: I really feel like I'm starting to make progress, which is necessary to keep me moving! Congrats on your loss too!
Don't stress out too much about all of the plank position stuff. It was tough for me at first too. One thing that I found that helped, is if you really try and maintain proper form, keeping your arms as straight and perpendicular to the floor as you can (instead of having your hands out more in front of you). It will increase your endurance faster and will make the moves more effective (it works your abs quite a bit more). You'll get there, by the time I was finished with level 2, I could do those plank moves a world easier than in the beginning!
I think the hardest part about level 2 was that I never felt like I could really catch my breath, and it made me so thirsty!!! It did get better though, and level 3 is completely different! I'm not nearly as thirsty or breathless, just plain tired!

No worries Sylvied, just take it one day at a time! It took me about 2 weeks of doing level 2 every day before I felt like I really did a good job, then I moved on to level 3! I remember the first few days, it took me twice as long to "recover" afterwards, so I was late to work.

haha, I WISH I looked like Natalie! The point of this program is to keep challenging yourself. Once a level felt "doable", I moved on. For me that was 10 days for level 1, 15 on level 2 and I just finished day 3 on level 3. I'd recommend really pushing yourself to try using the 5 pound weights more, the more you push, the more progress you'll make, even if you can't do every rep.

I haven't been skipping but I don't go running and, for me, part of it is just getting into the routine of working out regularly. I think, if you're exhausted, you're more likely to hurt yourself so a break may be in order...
My fear is that, for me, a "break" might become permanent, but you already have a workout routine, so you'll probably be fine

That exercise was the biggest challenge for me on level 2 as well, my arms would rebel and not want to move. But, they did their job! There isn't a similar move to that in level 3, so think of it as counting down to no more V raises!

I do the 30DS and pilates 5-6 days a week. Pilates is no impact, which is why it's doable for me. I think if you run regularly, it might be hard on your joints if you do 30DS every day. I'd give it a try for a few days in a row, and listen to your body. If you just feel tired, or muscle sore, I'd say go for it. Otherwise if you are feeling pain in your joints etc, I'd back off.

Just playing devil's advocate here. I was wondering the same, as I do it 5 or 6 days in a row. On Jillian's radio show, she said that you can do the program every day because the workouts are total body, and don't over emphasis one set of muscles. She said the program is short, so doing it every day wouldn't be over training. But listen to your body. I take a day off here or there because of my knees. I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow to see what my problem is.

Definitely, that's the hardest move for level 1! I switched to 3 pound weights for that move, and it helped, but it was still hard to complete all of the reps. It does get easier though! Each time you do it try to push yourself just a bit further than you did the day before. Soon enough, you'll be able to do it the whole way through.

I've had this dvd for weeks now, and still have yet to talk myself into doing it! I was doing the old tae-bo tapes for quite a while, and aside from increasing endurance, I honestly saw little to no change in my weight, though it may have been because of the binges I tried to hide even from myself!
I'm thinking that tonight, I should force myself to get my butt into the basement and hit play on the dvd player so I won't go to bed feeling guilty that I let another day I could be changing my life slip by!
How much more challenging is it than the Billy Blanks' stuff?
I know I've read about a whole lot of you that end up swearing at her or close to tears and I'm scared, but kinda psyched to challenge myself.
I'm hoping to lose inches as well as pounds. I'm not so concerned about building muscle, as I've already got quite a bit in leg and arm strength, though my core could use some serious help.

all I can say is that it's a challenge but in a good way. And it's doable, it's only 20 minutes!! And when you finish the 20 minutes, you feel AMAZING. (even if it might hurt the day after at the beginning).
The best part? Combined with healthy eating I actually saw results. And i'm not even done the 30 days!!
You should do it. Get yourself psyched up and press play!!
When I don't feel like it I tell myself "in one hour, you'll be done and showered and ready to do something else"
Good luck!!

There's nothing stopping you! Just try it, you can always take breaks if you really need to, but it's a really short video. That doesn't mean it's not challenging, but it feels great when you are done!

Well, I just dove in and am currently still panting and sweating like a horse! I had to pause several times not from being out of breath, though I was, but during the jump rope and jumping jacks my feet became unbearably sore! I get this problem on the eliptical(sp?) as well. It starts off like that sort of numbness right before a limb falls asleep, but instead of going to the funky fuzzy feeling, it goes to excruciating pain that takes up to 20 minutes to fade to normal! Does anyone else have this issue? It happens no matter what shoes I'm wearing, no matter what socks, and changing how tight or loose I do my laces, and really frustrates me as I have to stop and wait for the pain to subside to continue. I think I might have to wear two sports bras now too! I never had a bounce issue with tae-bo, but I was convinced I might hit myself in the chin with all this jumping versus kicking!

It sounds like you have circulation issues. You might want to talk with a doc if you haven't already. Otherwise, it's a good thing to get your blood circulating. You might need a lower impact warm up, like marching in place.
I'm glad you went for it, I'm sorry you had the pain!

Holy cow! This morning I'm feeling muscles aching that I didn't even know that I had!!! As for the circulation issues, you're not alone in thinking that, Festivus. My boyfriend has been saying it for months as I'll go from shivering and needing the space heater on when it's over 80 outside to a cold clammy overheating sweat when it's a cold day for no apparent reason! My body can't seem to regulate its temperature properly, especially when I'm trying to sleep! If the thinning hair at 24 weren't bad enough, now I worry about suddenly getting damp underarms and upper lip sweat when it's not even hot out!
I'm going to push through the pain today and force myself to do day 2 of level one, trying my pumas instead of my usual sneakers to see if a closer to barefoot approach helps my poor feet.

Hi all - I love reading about everyone's progress! My husband and I had a minor setback in the program last week. He somehow managed to throw his back out, but I don't think it had much to do with the workout. We had done some work around the house and I think it was sore from that. We took several days off and have decided to start over since we had only done 2 days anyway.
I started yesterday and I think he's going to join me today. My main training focus is Couch to 5K right now. I'm on week 9 (the final week) and I will be running my first 5K on Saturday! Once that's over, I will give my full attention to 30DS.

Well, I forced myself to complete day two as best as I could, and I feel so disappointed in myself because yet again the foot pain had me in agony and I had to stop. I even kicked off my shoes half way through and tried to continue barefoot, which did actually help, except for the top of my right foot that just throbbed for 15 minutes after I stopped.
I called and asked my father, a physician, if he had any ideas on what the problem could be, or any remedies, but he was clueless, never heard of my issue before. It's frustrating, as I had the pain even before the weight, and even with little to no impact exercise!

Featherfire, I'm sorry you have to deal with that kind of pain! I looked up causes of circulation issues in the feet and there are several: Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

This type of pain doesn't seem normal, I really would encourage you to see a podiatrist. Another thing I thought of, maybe you have fractured your foot without realizing it? My Mom fractured her foot and it has never completely gotten better.

HI all, I am going to give this a try, I was doing the biggest loser fitness book, and it was soooo boring! So I got the 30ds and I am going to start today! I am very scared, as I have not seen to many people with the same weight as me doing this. I am very excited however! I am also walking five miles a day, and I am going to try to do some strip/chair dancing movies. I am also going to start doing medifast, at the beginning of July, so hopefully once I lose some more of the weight, I will be able to work out a little more...sorry for the novel...Have a great day!!

Hi Sharpie! It's great to hear you are so motivated! Remember to allow yourself time to progress though. It's really exciting to get started, but you don't want to over do it and get hurt or burned out. I'm just now finishing up 30DS and I loved it. It has really changed my perspective on the types of fitness activities I can do. Good luck!

I did allow myself one day off as I was seriously feeling muscles in my thighs and back that I didn't know I had! Feeling a lot better today, and actually have seen a drop in weight already!
I'm going to see what would happen today if I didn't bother with shoes and socks at all, and will stay on a carpeted surface.

I did my first day last night, and it kicked my butt, but I did it...I did have to stop to ketch my breath a few times, but I was trying o keep up with what they were all doing, it was mostly the cardio that was hard...but when I was done I felt so accomplished, and sweaty but I did it and I am happy!!

Hello everybody,
So I've heard a lot about this 30 day shred thing, so I put it to the top of my netflix queue and it arrived in the mail yesterday. I've lost 21 pounds since the beginning of the year, but I've been in a bit of a plateau for the last 2 1/2 weeks - I only need to lose 2 more pounds to make my first mini-goal of 10% weight loss, and I'm hoping the 30DS will jumpstart me. So I'm going to give level one a try today - I feel quite fit: I lift weights 2-3 times a week, take dance classes, do a lot of walking and biking, but I fully expected to get my booty kicked by this DVD based on everybody's comments. I'm feeling up to the challenge! I'm not online everyday but will pop in soon to fill you all in on my progress. Keep up the great work everybody and thanks for motivation.

Do you have asthma? Otherwise, try to work through it as far as you can, because you will build up your endurance. Give yourself 5 to 10 second breaks so you can catch your breath and jump right back in.
I have breathing issues too, including exercise induced asthma. My doc gave me an inhaler to use, but it doesn't really help much.
Level 1 and 2 left me more breathless than level 3.

It's true, Level 3 does fly by compared to Level 2. I did L3 D1 today and while I felt like I was going to die at the end, I was also amazed that the workout felt as short as it did.
I found the jumping lunges pretty challenging...partly because our floating laminate floor was poorly installed (we're renting) and so it slides around under my feet when I move.

I forced myself through another two days, despite the pain continuing, though, it's not as terrible barefoot. I have found though, I didn't realize how many muscles I don't use enough! Days later, and by the time bedtime rolls around, I'm hardly able to walk from the pain in my legs, butt, and back! Those squats are a killer, but I love them! I'm finding that the more I force myself to not skip days and keep going through the pain, I feel so much happier inside and out, even if I'm swearing at her through the workout and feeling like an 18 wheeler parked on me getting out of bed. ^_^

You could consider trying some yoga stretches before bed at night. I was doing that for awhile and it seemed to help so I didn't seize up as much in the morning... cuz yeah, she makes you work and it can hurt for sure.

So I started the shred on Saturday, and then took Sunday off, and did the shred this morning. I had a 9 am meeting, so I got up at 7:30 to do it first thing. I'm glad that I read everyone's comments so I had a sense of what to expect. My thighs are sore from the squats - I definitely feel it when going up stairs and when I sit down, but it's not like it hurts all the times. I only used one pound weights and I really didn't feel the upper body stuff at all, so I should probably move up to at least 3 pound weights.
It's great to get a workout in in just 20 minutes! I really like what Jillian said about working hard for a shorter period of time instead of spending hours at the gym and 'phoning it in.'
Keep up the good work, shred partners. I'll check back in later.

Congrats on making it through Day 2 blueridgegirl. I'm with you on Jillian's comment about 20 minutes doing more than 'phoning it in' for an hour at the gym. When I first heard that bit I wondered but it's true that her 20 minute workout has done more for me in the past month than months of going to the gym...and I sound like an infomercial but I promise no one has paid me to say this.
I'm wondering though if, once I've done all 30 days, I could go through the three levels again and get a couple of months out of this DVD... I mean, I can't imagine that after I've done all three levels the first one will feel ineffective or anything...it's still a hard workout.
Has anyone tried that?

I'm so thrilled to find this thread!
I just did the shred level one for the first time today and OH MY GOSH. I've been exercising for two and half months, have been climbing 450+ stairs a couple of times a week the last few weeks and been doing weight training and Jillian totally kicked my butt.
But I have a question: what do you guys do in addition to the shred? I couldn't get through level one without stopping and am looking forward to the challenge of the DVD, but since it's only 20 minutes what else do you do to get to say, an hour of exercise a day?
It's especially tough to really know what to do since even though it was such a short time, I feel like I've done so much already!

I started the 30-day shred on Sunday, so today was L1 D3... I already knew that my upper body is not as strong as my lower and it shows! So far, I am working with no weights on the chest fly, but 5 lb for everything else. However, I still can't do the push-ups all the way. I am doing girly ones and can only go down half way. I figure that's pretty good considering I can do everything else just fine. I'm trying to do one thing better every day - today was good butt kicks! lol Anywho, I like the dvd so far and got it because it has 3 phases to keep me entertained.

I am new to this site and to the 30 day shred. I tried to do it and I was tired and sweating by the time the warmup was over. I did not make it half way through. I am so out of shape. I need some help and motivation. Gaining this weight was not painful at all but it hurt so much to lose it.

Lady: I've found that as long as I can make it through the first circuit, I'm usually good for the rest of it. I find the jumping jacks and jump rope to be the most challenging part of level 1. Don't be afraid to take breaks if you have to. It's better to take breaks and finish than to feel like you can't do it. Your body will adjust! Just keep pushing it to.
I did L2 D3 this morning and was able to go with only pausing once during the first aerobic circuit! I took a few seconds in a few other parts, but not long enough that I needed to pause.
Last time I tried to do 30DS about 2 months ago I was literally having to fight with my body that I 'could' do it. I'm not sure what has changed since that time. Maybe it's that I finally have enough motivation to put everything else behind me. My goal is by D5 to be able to go with no pauses.

I just did L1 D5. I'm still having to take pauses during the workout, but I'm really proud of myself for keeping up with doing it everyday. I've tried to make excuses with myself, but every time I manage to go ahead and get through the workout. I've been using 3lb instead of 2lb weights for the last two days. The only time I start struggling with them is when I get near the end of the side lunges.

Don't feel bad. I seriously wonder if I would've been able to do the shred (I'n on Level 1, today would be my third day, but not consecutively) if I hadn't worked up to it. That includes two months and a half months of walking, several weeks of stair climbing and weights.
I still can't do the shred without stopping. Hang in. I think if you're not physically fit at all (which I was not) jumping right into the shred is like plowing into the deep end.

I've been really pushing myself, especially with the video. It's much easier for me to do 20mins on the elliptical than that video! I still think it's because my arms are trying to catch up to my legs (muscle-wise). I feel like I've got crazy-strong legs and my poor arms have been neglected. :( I'm thinking by the time I'm done with this 30-day shred that my arms will be so much stronger than they are now. I'm on L1 D6 today when I get home and I am still excited to go home and do it!

Star, I hear your pain with not having very strong arms. Just imagine how much stronger they'll be in a month! How heavy are the weights that you're using?

Star - I think most women are in the same boat of having stronger legs than arms. But the 30 DS is one way to change that for sure!!!
So I've been shredding for a week now, though not every day - I did Level 1 four times last week and last night when I did it could definitely feel that I was stronger. Not like I'm like Natalie (girl on the left), totally rocking it out and doing everything to the total extreme, but hey, at least I could sit down on the loo afterwards without feeling major soreness in my legs. So today I tried level two. Wow, the plank stuff is for real!!! I feel like the biggest difference is that the ab stuff is tougher - in level 1 abs sort of feels like a break compared to strength/cardio, but not in L2. Monday is my weigh in day so we'll see how a week of shredding impacts the number on the scale. I'm glad I lost 20 pounds and increased my fitness through walking, weightlifting and working out BEFORE I started the shred, or else I think this would be way tougher. Definitely not for the faint of heart! Keep up the great work everybody! Have a fabulous weekend!

Lady – It will get easier. I would suggest that maybe stick with level 1 until you can do it all the way through (no matter how many days that may take). When you do it, just take as many breaks as you feel you need. There’s no shame in taking 20 5-sec breaks, ;)
Talina – My weights are 5lbs. They are the only girly ones we have at home and I really thought I could do it, haha.
I will be on L1D9 today when I get home. From all the talk about how horrible level 2 is, I am not too excited to start that one. I honestly figured that I would be able to get at least 60days of work out from this dvd, so I’m doing some of the modified versions (ie: girly push ups still) and I don’t feel bad about it. I took a break from the elliptical yesterday because my knee was bothering me a little, so I don’t feel too horrible because I wanted to give my knee a rest.
Has everyone been doing this every day? Or are you skipping days in between?

I'll be doing L1D6 tonight.
I was doing it everyday, but this weekend was quite crazy for me. I decided to give myself a break, just to be sure that I started back up today.
Star - If you keep using those 5lbers you'll be doing regular push ups in no time!
My hope with the video is after my 30 days to alternate between the work outs about 3 times a week. By then I should have enough strength to really push myself harder.

Stargazer: I didn't do it everyday until now when I first started I could barely move for 3 days...so it was 2 x 1st week then 3x 2nd week then 4 x 3rd week now I can do it everyday, w/ 2 days off a week. It was and is empowering to see how much strength I have gained in such a short time.
Just finished L1D13 and I felt so serene, my husband did it with me he is on d2, kind of gave me a bit of competition *Wink*
doing 10 lbs chest flys and arm rows, 5lbs shoulder lifts and 5 lbs squat and shoulder lifts.

Talina - That sounds like a great plan, the three days a week once you've done the first set of 30 days! I love getting more out of a video than was originally meant! Yay for saving money, hehe.
Michelle - You are fabulous for keeping with it and upping it every week! Way to go! I'm sure you're probably seeing some inches lost as well as more strength!
Boy do I wish I could do regular push-ups... or as I call them, manly ones.. haha. My husband can do them with almost no effort and I think that's why I really want to be able to do them, to say that I can too. I felt like yesterday was a little easier than the other days, but I am still having a bit of issue with the anterior raises coupled with side lunges. I have tight hamstrings, so it pulls mostly on those when I do the side lunges, but my arms just hate those anterior raises for some reason!

Anyone else ever notice that Natalie is totally slacking at one point when she thinks the camera is off her? Watch L1, Circuit 2, Strength part on the lunges, first rotation. When Jillian walks over to the other girl to demonstrate the easier version, Natalie's just doing the arms. Those legs ain't movin'! Made me feel better.
L1D7, with one day off. And that first Cardio rotation is still rough! I was trying to move up to 5 lb weights, but decided I'm just not ready yet. I'll go through it all w/ 3 lb, then try a 2nd month with 5 lb? Maybe . . .

Hi Star, yes I saw a tremendous pull in of inches its what kept me going when the scale wouldn't give me my reward.I also have lots of memory muscle, I served in the military for 10 years from 82-92, then for about 5 years I had trained in weight lifting, life happened a lot of tough times, excessive weight gain, then my OMG! moment its been about 10 years since I picked up any weights and I cant believe its been that long because I absolutly love it.

LOL - I thought the same thing after I previewed it. Level 1 just doesn't look that bad! Maybe it's having perspective now, but I'm a bit intimidated by 2 & 3. Oh, and just recently decided to move back up to 5 lb weights. Nope - back to 3!
Anyway, I do better hitting 30DS fresh, then resting and doing more cardio. The other way around doesn't work real well for me. So you might want to switch it up if it's still rough after the cardio.

Talina – I am totally going to check out that site you posted. To be honest, 100 push ups sounds scary!! haha
Jelder – I totally noticed that! Did you also see that on jump rope near the beginning that Anita totally slacks and jumps from one foot to the other?! After I read your comment yesterday it got me paying attention to them, haha. Man was it funny! Did you see that Jillian actually missteps during butt kicks at one point? hehe
For some reason I find that first circuit more difficult than the other ones.. hmm
Azulfire – That is super awesome that you’ve seen inches coming off! Sometimes it’s nice to be able to put on a new pair of smaller pants or a smaller shirt instead of seeing the scale move.
Nancylmrn – Trust me that the first day was pretty difficult for me too. You’re great for sticking with the hand weights! I had to put them down completely on that first day. Now that you mention it, I’ve come a ways.. I can do all of them with my 5lb weights now! Gees, I didn’t even realize… Thanks!!
I also do the video first and then hop on the elliptical for some cardio. I figure it’s good that my heart rate is already up, but I also haven’t tried it the other way around. I get to start L2D1 today and and scared out of my pants. Previous posters have me worried I won’t be able to do it. I know I just need to ignore what they said and just do it the best I can… so I have the rest of the day to convince myself I can do the entire level 2 workout! Even if I have to put down the weights for the first day.
Not sure if I mentioned here, but I am about over my cold and I really think the working out has helped me to recover quicker! For that I am so happy to be doing my workout today! So there! :P

I have viewed the other circuits, but have yet attempted them yet, I think I want to finish the first 30 day at level 1. not sure yet.
Jelder, I too do more cardio after or later in the day , doing the cardio before I know I wouldn't have the strength to get through it.

OK - Day 9 done (I missed 2 days, so sort of day 11)! And I actually got through all of the cardio, without even wanting to stop. When this weight is off I WILL quit smoking. And I did all of those side lunges with the lateral raises or whatever. I know I still need to do another 3 or 4 days on this one before I move to the next level. Just trying to decide if I'd do better moving up to the 5 lb weight and stay on this level another week before moving to level 2. Any thoughts from those further along. Remember, I'm old!
Stargzr - the first circuit is harder - except for the lateral raises the other two circuits are easier by comparison.
Azulfire - I grew up in that area - El Paso! And my parents live in Alto, NM now - not far from you. Actually they were in Las Cruces for a bowling tournament a few weeks ago. Had some interesting times in Las Cruces many years ago . . .
Next challenge - going to Denver for the weekend. Can I still do this for 3 days on vacation, when I'm at 5,200 feet over sea level?

Nancylmrn – If your goal is to get through level 1 without resting, I have no doubt you can do it!
Azulfire – There is no shame in going from leg to the other in jump rope! I know I did it a few days once I saw her doing it. haha
Jelder – I am so glad to hear that someone else thinks the first circuit is the hardest! I totally think you can do this during your vacation. I plan to video record the workout on my camera to take with me when I go on vacay the end of this month. I figure by then I don’t really need to see them doing the exercises, I just need to hear her saying what they’re doing and the music so I can keep the beat.
Ok, I did L2D1 yesterday and it wasn’t as bad as others said it was. It was difficult, don’t get me wrong, but I was thinking it would be absolutely horrible! There were many parts that were so hard for me, but I got by with only taking 4 breaks, two of which were on the same exercise. Other people were right, there are a lot of plank exercises in level 2 and I was wishing I had mastered the ‘manly’ push-ups. I do remember my first couple days on level 1 though and they were hard for me, so I am thinking I will get used to the challenge and work it out. Hope everyone’s day was wonderful yesterday and hope to hear of your progress today!

Congrats on making it to the next level stargzr! And don't worry, your body does seem to improve its endurance to each new level.
I finally finished L3 D10 today and I'm completely hooked on the workout. It certainly hasn't become easy yet so I think I can get another month out of it by combining the levels and mixing and matching them. I'd love to be able to do it at Natalie's level before moving onto another video but I have a feeling I will get bored with the contents before that happens so I'll have to put it aside and build up to it.

Sylvied: Thanks for much for the vote of confidence!! I read it before I left work to go home and do my workout and it really helped me get through today. I actually didn't rest at all! I was so proud of myself. I am still getting used to the order of the workouts and such, so I hesitate a second still to make sure I know what I'm doing... But all in all, no breaks! and I didn't die :P

well today was L1D3 I made it throught the girlie pushups without stopping whoo hoo had a bit of trouble with jump rope (rested a few beats) same with the butt kicks but was stronger today. after I finished I did watp for 4 miles. It is much easier to do te 30DS first then the cardio. I found that I was impatient for the cardio to end so I could go rest LOL

I just bought the video online tonight, I have a question though, what do you need other than weights and a exercise mat??
What are your reasons for doing the video, to tone, lose weight or both? I'm wanting to tone mostly...
Those that have finished 30 day shred, what have results been like??

07-05-2009, 09:27 AM
Hi everyone - so I've been MIA this week. I did the shred Monday and then left it at a friend's house and didn't have it with me. I did some long walks at a good pace but a part of me misses having soreness in my quads and shoulders and arms...does that sounds crazy?!? But I've got the DVD back and want to get back to L2 this week.
Lwclec - I'm wanting to both tone and lose weight, and wanted to do something to mix up my usual workout routine or walking or elliptical and weights. I've only been doing it for 2 weeks (and not every day) but I did manage to get out of a plateau that I was at for 3 weeks and make my first minigoal of 10% loss.
lwclec072

blueridgegirl - congrats on your mini-goal, sounds like you're making great progress!
I really look forward to receiving my video in the next week or so! i've heard so many good things about the video on sparkpeople.com there is a lot being said about the video over there which is what got me interested in it to begin with, i have trouble sticking w/ a workout routine because I get bored and so discouraged easily so i'm hoping this will help me stay motivated and once i start seeing results that will be even better. :)
btw, not sure if you all knew but on youtube they have the full video posted, so if you leave it at a friends again or lose it you can always view it on youtube, i previewed it on youtube but havent worked out to the video on there.

Even though yesterday was the 4th I got up and did L1D5 then did 4mil watp dvd..it was really hard to get through both of them.
Today I am still tired but my goal is to workout later this evening. I am still struggling with the first round of cardio (jump rope) and the squat/arm raises and side lunge/arm rasise are still hard for me to complete and I have to rest a beat or two.
When did you all notice you could complete all of level 1 without pausing?
Azulfire
07-05-2009, 08:04 PM
LW To lose weight, to feel strong.
I can relate to you about missing the sorness, I was just think about how I need to kick it up a notch, as I believe I have adapted to it. There is that feel good pain which I enjoy, as well
Well MNacy still working on it, The girls are just not to keen on jumpimg, so we do the anita version of one foot to the other jumping, my greatest strenth are the weights, my weaket are the push-ups and stretching, and jumping.
nancylmrn
07-06-2009, 12:00 AM
Azulfire I know what you mean I think we all have some weakness and at times it is hard to push on. Tonight I did it again and made it through the cardio (anita one foot hop to the other) but still had to pause on the over head and rasies even though I am only using 3lb weights. I am proud I can do the grily push ups and even tried (2) on my toes before starting --not ready for those yet. After I was done I rested for 10 min then did watp for the 4 mile walk
I too hope to lose weight but as I lose I also want to be tone. nothing is worse to me than seeing any person jiggle when they move.. small or large

Happy Monday Ladies! I kind of disappeared from the forums for the weekend, my bad.
I did my 30-day shred every day. So that makes it 15 days in a row yesterday, haven't missed one. :)
I will be on L2D6 tonight when I get home. There is so much plank-work in this level, it's not even funny... but I sweat like crazy for this level! I don't feel it as much as I did with level 1, but I expected that as I hadn't been working out before I started (back injury back in January and just got the clearance from the doc to work out again). I can feel my body getting stronger though, which is super good. So far, I haven't lost any numbers on the scale, but my body is toning a lot! Hope everyone's weekend went well! Stick with it ladies, I love hearing your updates and how things are going for you!
My favorite thing Jillian says: "I want you to feel like you're going to die." It reminds me that I am NOT going to die even if I work it harder. :)

Hope everyone had a great 4th! I went out of town, and used over 10% of my weight allowance to take my 3 lb weights with me! For me, that's a sacrifice. Then I really worked out 2 of the 3 days! Unfortunately, I didn't get back until 1 am this morning, and I just couldn't get up in time to work out this morning.
Think I'll go 2 more days on Level 1 then try Level 2. The only parts of Level 1 that are challenging now are the jump rope, and the arm raises that go with the sideways lunges.

Hello all. :)
I had planned to start this workout months ago, but a back and hip injury has kept me from it. Until now. I JUST finished my first workout. OH MY! I can feel it in places I never thought I would. lol. I have Power Sculpt so I thought I would at least be prepared a bit for this one. Not even close. I have to say though, I do love it, and am looking forward to doing it again tomorrow.
I am doing this video because I adore Jillan, I want to lose weight, but I also really want to tone up as well.
Push ups = kicked my butt. Side lunges with arm raises = kicked my butt... I am thinking upper arm strength is not my strong point. ;)
So glad this thread is here and we can share the experience.

Well tonight would have been L1D7 but I just did not have the energy to do both this workout and watp...I think what will work best for me is if I alternate between cardio, and weight training.
Tomorrow I am going to concentrate on the weights not sure if I will keep up with shred or do something along the lines of 'the firm' they have one I enjoyed that did upper and lower body total 75min of killer weights and it gets the cardio going
but I have to say the shed really got me through the push ups at least girlie ones

Jelder – You are so awesome in my book for the sacrifice of taking the weights with you instead of something else!! Way to be!
SweetCurves – Don’t feel bad about your upper body strength, it was super hard for me too! I did a lot of the exercises for upper body without weights even, for a few days in the beginning.
Nancy – What is watp?
kk140 – I have been doing the 30day shred for a total of 16 days now… 17 will be tonight after work. I haven’t taken a day off yet, because as Jillian says, YOU CAN DO IT! She says in the video that she’s had 400+lb people doing some of those exercises. When I hear that in the video, it reminds me that I can do it too! So, you can do this! Just stick with it and before you know it, it will have become a habit and you’ll be excited to pop in the video every day! :)
I completed L2D6 yesterday. I have been doing the thrust thing one leg at a time instead of both and the plank jacks one leg at a time as well. However, I tried the plank jacks full out last night and… I did it! I was so excited that it’s got me wanting to try doing the thrust things full out tonight. After I get those down full out, all I have left to master is the military press – I have trouble keeping the weights in my hands.. I can do the first set with them, but usually don’t pick them up for the second set. Is anyone else on Level 2? What most difficult for you?

I need some to get up in the mornings! I work out first thing usually, and since I got back from Colorado I'm oversleeping. I keep telling myself that 3 days CAN'T throw me this much off schedule. But it is. If I don't get up tomorrow, I'm going to have to start working out in the evenings, which I don't like.

Personally, my best motivation for getting up to work out in the mornings is the reminder that the sluggishness in my brain means that I'll be mostly done the workout before I'm mentally awake enough to register how hard it is :)

stargzr watp is Leslie Sansone walk away the pounds. I do the 5 mile burn and 5 mile adv which used weights. but most of her dvd are for beginers or if you are short on time and can only do 1, 2, or 3 miles at a time. The 5 mile burn you are walking/jogging at a brisk pace (12min mile) wile using your arms.
It is just another workout but I have to say I really like it and have seen some changes in my body shape and I have been doing it now for 5 weeks. I just added 30shred to get a bit more tonning

LOL - Unfortunately, by the time I'm done letting dogs in and out, etc., I'm more or less awake. But I did it this morning - back on TX time. Just finished L1D12 or so - I've lost count, esp due to a few missed days here and there. I can handle everything without struggling much now except those confounded lateral raises - my arms just DON'T work that way! Well, I'm still doing girlie pushups, but I'm a girl, so that's OK!

Sweetcurves - So glad to hear that you like the burn! I love it too and I can tell you that I still feel it every day, which is one of the many reasons I am totally loving this workout!
L2 isn't as bad as it sounds... well ok, maybe the first day was. ;)
I did L2D7 last night and I really didn't want to. I also hopped on my elliptical when I didn't want to, so I rewarded myself with a popsicle for dessert! I got these popsicles with no sugar added. They are only 20 cals, like 1g of fat. I ate my first one last night and it was sooo good! mango-pineapple. I wasn't able to finish it though, so I guess I only had like 10cals, 1/2 g of fat, haha.
I am so happy to see all of you here so much! It really helps me to be motivated to want to put the video in when I get home every day. So, thanks everyone for being here! Hope you have a great workout today!

Okay, so I haven't fallen off the wagon yet! I've been continuing to repeat L1 until not only am I able to do it all the way through without breaks, but I'm hoping the foot pain will either level out to something bearable or fade. On a good note, I got my mother and sister sniping my dvd as well! They're human skeletons to begin with, but wanted to challenge themselves to a new workout. Yay for me, I actually had better stamina and strength than they did!
Finally, also, I've managed to fall off my plateau of not being able to lose more than 2-7 pounds and jumping back up to the original number overnight. After talking to my father, as much as he tries to do the "I don't treat family" thing, he suggested the issues have been thyroid related. So, I had a blood test at my last depo shot, and surprise! He was right. So, I'm on the supplement track as I'm stubbornly refusing to be reliant on a medication. What a difference it's made! I actually wake up WANTING to do the shred and am bouncing off the walls practically until I do! Finally, I'm actually not feeling so much in pain the next day as well. It's been a really motivating change in things! Now if I can just keep with it and get on an actual schedule of eating and not forgetting until I'm shaking and about to pass out, it'll be a great summer! (and I don't mind all this rain one bit, because it means I have more time to prepare for a swimsuit beach day!)

Hey everyone... I'm kinda sorta starting the 30DS so I went back and read through some of the posts here for inspiration.
I found levels 1 and 2 on my exercise TV on demand channel, and tried level 1 one day last week... I've been working out a lot for a while, and gotten somewhat fit, and level 1 was a decent workout for me but not as hard as I expected from reading about it.
Well, last night I tried level 2... OMG. It kicked. my. butt. My husband was even impressed, and usually he hates all fitness instructors because they don't do things exactly like him  (he took classes on fitness and has a little personal training experience).
So I'm jumping in at level 2 (day 2 today!), and I think I'll need to actually buy the DVD because they don't have level 3 available on demand. I think it will be worth it, though!

featherfire - I am so glad to hear that you're sticking with it! I can tell you for sure that you will be happy you did! I am definitely behind your idea to stick with level 1 until your foot gets used to it. I had a bit of a problem with my shins after a few days (I get shin splints really easily), but with icing them and continuing to work out they've gotten much better!
mayness - That is so great you've taken into account your current workout level. For things like these it's much nicer to just skip ahead to the next level when you feel you're ready. I, personally, used to go to the gym daily (though not working hard enough) but had to stop due to a back injury. So when I started back up I thought this dvd would be good. I guarantee you won't regret the purchase!
sweetcurves - I am so proud! That is awesome that you're sticking with it! It's wonderful to see you on here often.
I did L2D8 today and am a little scared for level 3 (just like I was for level 2)< From what other people said, level 3 is supposed to be a bit easier than level 2. I am hoping there is less of the plank pose workouts, although I am going to start just being in plank pose to get used to it and to help myself be able to do the squat thrusts completely.

Jelder227 you're not alone! That's part of the reason I can't get myself to do the shred! It's hard to wake up!!
Tomorrow and friday I have my afternoons off so I'm planning on working out then. I find it easier than the early morning cause I have more energy. In the morning I work out before breakfast so I feel pretty weak. And working out at night isn't ideal for me either...
But we gotta do what we gotta do!!

OK - it's official. I'm old and a wuss. I got up, and since the DVD wanted to start on level 2, I just hit play for that. Might as well start - I've done 14 days or so of L1, and I'm doing pretty well on that.
All those plank position, hopping your legs around? I would land on my face! I am NOT that coordinated. So I'm doing the "sissy" version. And the aerobics section with the twists and the sliders? Not there yet either. Could do them, but not the full sets. Oh - and that last abs exercise? Don't remember what it was, 'cause I was with my 5-year-old on the "you've gotta be kidding me" attitude by then. But I didn't quit, I did do some crunches.
I'm going to stick with it. But I have noticed - she says she has people who weigh 400 pounds who can do whatever. But she doesn't say anything about 40-year-olds!
That's my vent for the day. Thank you for listening. :)

jelder - I love it! You are too funny. I too was a bit taken aback by some of the moves in level 2 and the amount of plank pose workouts. I have to admit I was not excited about them. I've noticed that the more I push myself to just hold the plank pose, it becomes easier to move my feet/legs.
I do work out after I get home from work... The morning, I just don't want to. After my hubby gets home, I just don't want to. So since he gets off an hour after I do, I hurry home, pop in the tape, and do it. Then go on out to the garage and hop on the elliptical. I usually finish a few minutes before he comes in the door. It's eliminated the time I have to make dinner before he gets home, but hey I have to trade off something to get fit! ;)

Okay, so I definitely overdid it yesterday with my energy boost! I'm seriously hurting today, but it's a good pain! After the shred, I felt that I still had plenty of energy to burn, so I did some weight training on the nordic flex. I wanted to do tae-bo before bed because I was still bouncing around once the initial shakiness in my muscles subsided about an hour after my workout and dinner, but I'm glad I held off. It was one of those nights where sleeping was a challenge because I actually was awakened by the pain in the night! It wasn't terrible, but it still woke me up. So, I'm not letting myself off the hook today as I'm still feeling energized and motivated, but I think I'm laying off the weights until tomorrow and will try and do tae-bo first, and see how I feel later on and do the shred then. Basing on how my body feels, I'd be too tired if I did the shred first!
Yay for iodine/kelp supplements, I'm feeling like a 5 year old/teenager again with this energy coming back!

Hey, ladies! I posted this question in another forum:
I've heard a lot of people talk about the 30 Day Shred program. I googled it, but wanted some personal opinions.
I'm debating if I should try it now or if I should wait until I've lost a little bit more weight. For my current activity I do lots of walking and play around with my aerobic step and my hand weights. I am not super coordinated (hence the reason I can only "play around" with my step -- I lack the skill to actually DO step aerobics).
Can someone describe it? Do you like it? Do you think it would be appropriate for me at my current level of fitness? In the past I have been very active and have even run a marathon, but that was 8 years and 80 pounds ago... I'm 29 now.
and I was directed here. I think I've definitely decided to get the DVD but I wanted to ask a few more questions about it. I hope you don't mind!
So there are three levels, right? And you're supposed to do each level for 10 days? Is there a problem if you're not feeling ready to step up a level? Can you just stay on level 1 for longer?
And what do you do once you've finished a 30 day cycle? Do you guys restart from level one again? Do you do something else for a month and then come back to the 30DS? When you come back, do you go through all the levels again or just start with level 2 or 3?
So many questions for s stupid DVD, huh?
Thanks in advance for any insight you have. I'm mostly worried about my coordination. I once tried to do a step aerobics class at the university gym and half way through I ended up on the step of the person next to me. And I had NO idea how I even got there!
jelder227
07-09-2009, 04:44 PM
Yes, theory, you are supposed to do each Level for 10 days, then move on. However, I'm just starting Level 2 (see above post), but stayed on Level 1 about 14 days, until I was comfortable with it - doing most of it without a real challenge. Based on that, I'd guess I'll be in Level 2 about 20 days? Maybe not . .. .
My plan is to go all the way through with three pound weights, then again with five pound weights.
Coordination won't be as much of a problem with this as a lot of the aerobics. And in you're in your living room, so you don't have to be embarrassed. Also, a lot of coordination is balance, which is strength related - you might see some of that improve!
Good luck - I grumble some, but I'm really impressed with the results on this. I'm seeing a very definite improvement in my strength and endurance after just 2 weeks.

jelder, I'm 20 and felt the same way the first time I did level 2!! So trust me it's not an age thing. Keep is up and you'll see it'll get better. I'm still doing "sissy" versions and can't get through the whole workout without taking breaks but I'm a whole lot better than when I started!!
Rebound,as jelder said, you don't have to change levels until you're ready. What's great is that there are 2 girls working out with Jillian and one does advanced moves and the other does modified moves. When you feel like level 1 isn't challenging you anymore you can move on to 2. As for what to do after 30 days, you can either redo it with heavier weights like jelder said or try redoing it with the "advanced" moves. After the 30 days you can also use it for example on level 3 as a workout on its own for a day where you only have 30 minutes to spare.
I find it takes less coordination than other videos i've tried because the strength part basically combines moves you would do at the gym, just in front of the tv instead. Even the cardio moves are relatively simple (jumping jacks, skipping rope).
Hope it helps! You'll feel so good when you finish a workout though. This video has changed my summer so far

All I could think about, when she says she even has 400 lb people doing JJ's, I hear somebodys knee going out.or I say to myself uh who is going to tack my bladder back up, (I worry about a fallen bladder) so I do this drill exercise during the jumping jack part.

azulfire - What is your drill exercise? I'm always interested in new moves. :)
rebound - Yes, there are 3 levels. Since there are 3 and it's called 30-day shred that's what I took it to mean. I spent 10 days on level 1 and plan to spend 10 days on level 2. However, my original plan was to re-use the dvd at least twice through completely. So this time around is my first and I am not fretting if I can only do the modified versions. Next time around, I will be more concerned with going all out (so to speak). On the other hand, there's no harm in staying in the same level until you feel comfortable moving on.
I completed L2D9 today and am actually excited again about my workout for tomorrow. We'll see how I feel tomorrow about day 1 on level 3.. hehe

Stargzr It is going to be a bit hard to explain, ok , imagine if your standing on a step like in step aerobics, step off step, w right foot then, step off step with left foot,at this point you should be straddling imaginary step, the step back up w right foot, then step up with left foot, and do as quickly as possible. till the JJ's are done. And repeat.

L1D4 - Missed a day yesterday, due to company. But I think it was actually good to give my sore body a day of rest. But I missed doing it!
I did find it really hard to get going today though. The first set really kicked my butt, even more than the first day I did it.:o Still I kept going and before long I was getting into it, and suddenly I was done. :carrot: It feels so good!
Hope everyone is doing well!

I was about to give up after 5 minutes....but stayed with it. One question though.......... does anyone know of cheap sports bras? jumping jacks suck when you wear a regular bra when you wear a 44 ddd...... Jillian apparently likes jumping jacks........

So glad I found this thread....this will be day 3, level 1 for me and I'm sore...like someone please help me down the stairs!!
I had been wondering whether to miss today to give my body more time to recover, but after reading all this, I guess I better go get my training gear on.
Now someone please help me outta this chair and point me in the right direction ;)

I've done 2 days of it. I'm sore and taking a break.
But I do plan on going to the gym for a regular workout.
I'm really hating the Shred, but I can tell it's good for me. I just don't think I want to do it daily.

Well I did it...I'm sore but in a happy way ;).
That first set of strength stuff wrecks me....the press ups and lunges with shoulder press.....after that I can battle on ok. (though I have decided I hate all varieties of lunges!)
Bring it on !

Azulfire, that is so very very true. What I want to know is, how come it goes by so fast when you know you can keep going, but it seems to take forever on days when you are just barely getting through? :dizzy:

I ended up having to take two days off, as much as I didn't want to. I was just in so much pain, especially going from sitting to standing or down stairs, that I ended up on the couch feeling disappointed. I actually WANTED to do the shred. I made a genuine effort to try and get through it, but I made it up to the jump-rope section and had to stop. My leg muscles just were not up for it, and my knee caps are bruised from the push-ups. I'm actually considering knee pads unless I decide to change to the traditional style. My boyfriend thinks it's sissy girly of me to do them on my knees (but I AM a girl! lol) but I actually feel like I'm working my chest and shoulder muscles better on my knees. I feel like if I keep this style up versus switching, the girls might not sag as the pounds come off! Gravity be damned! ^^
The two days weren't a total loss though, I did mow the lawn which is a 2+hour event, and did weight training on the nordic flex. I might actually pull out my old soccer shin guards for it though, as I have bruises on my shins from the padded bars on the leg lifts. The weight was perfect for me to be challenged but not injuring myself, but the thinner tissue and muscle mass on the front of my legs, like with most people caused me to bruise and become super sensitive when I made an effort this afternoon to do it again.
Thankfully, I'm feeling great now and am amped to do the shred in the morning, though I'm tempted to start my day with tae-bo.
Oh! I know I'm rambling on a bit, but I know I'm not alone in hating the music and Jillian's voice, so I turned on closed captioning and muted the tv and made an exercise playlist on Pandora to keep me entertained and focused rather wanting to strangle her with that voice! Favorite Pandora station at the moment is Bob Marley. Beachy music for motivation!
jelder227
07-12-2009, 09:26 AM
Isn't her voice annoying? Unfortunately, I find that what she says does get me to maintain position, and occasionally, keep going when I'm "about to die". So I'm not quite ready to mute her yet.
Maybe 2nd go round - I love the idea of playing better music. My Pandora "Happy Music" station would be a blast to exercise to!

hi all,
haven't been on these forum for ages!but am back now and ready to get shredding.i've been doing it on and off for a while and feel really strong when i get into the swing of it!
instead of the suggested 20mins a day,i actually do the whole dvd through 3 times a week.i enjoy doing the whole 60mins and am always burnt out afterwards but am feeling good!
i'm starting a my own little 10week challenge as of tomorrow(13th july)i would like to lose approx 20lbs in that time frame.i will aim to work out to dvds (esp 30ds) minimum of 3 days per week and eat healthily cutting out all junk food.i always do my best when i cut out all rubbish:)
and my motivation for staying on track during these 10 weeks, well dh and i will start trying for baby#3 as soon as i've lost my weight!!!!i feel by losing these lbs and working out regularly i will not only be healthier but fitter for pregnancy!
i'm looking forward to joining you all on this wonderful journey and for once 'i'm gonna finish what i started' lol.i will do measurements/bf%/weigh tomorrow to see my starting point!
best of luck ladies(gents too!)

Yay! Another day done! I'm actually still full of energy now, unlike other days where I spent the rest of the day convinced I was going to die from shaking limbs and exhaustion. I made it a lot longer without having to pause for my foot pain this time around but know now that I defintely need to get multiples of my favorite nike sports bra. I went with one of those generic seamless types today, which is usually very comfy for around the house on lazy days, but kept riding up and freeing the girls during jumping jacks today!
It's so nice outside that I'm treating myself to a good snooze in the sun on the deck session since I got the shred done. Also, I found a good way to keep that post workout crash away is a good protein shake right after exercising. I live in an Arbonne household, so I simply added some of their vanilla (or chai!) protein shake mix along with a scoop of fiber booster to my blender with light vanilla soy milk and fresh strawberries and kiwi. Makes for a tasty lunch and good protein source! I only wish I could filter out the seeds, as I can't stand the feeling of them, especially when they get stuck in my teeth!
If I'm feeling good still later on today, I think I'll toss in one of my tae-bo tapes. I admit I'm still using the basic tapes, but as I can make it all the way through them and feel really good about the workout that I've done after, I'm not going to feel whimpy. They're all a challenge in a different way!
I also think that Billy Blanks is a heck of a lot more motivating and fun to listen to than Jillian!
oh, and before I forget, anyone else feel off balance during the lunges? I'm continually worried about falling over!

OMG - the heat index hit 105 here yesterday, so I wore a sleeveless shirt. And I think I saw some definition in my arms. Honest - they weren't just these tubes of flesh - there was some SHAPE to them! And the jiggle is decreasing. Thank you Jillian!
CurvyBabe - Good for you getting in shape before getting pregnant! Ours was kind of a surprise - my weight was going up, and I decided to join a weight loss center. One of the questions was about being pregnant - and I decided maybe I should check . .. Guess what! The pregnant thing put THAT on hold. 5 years later, here I am finally battling that weight off.
Featherfire - Yes, I used to always feel off balance in the lunges, and still do occasionally. The stronger core muscles really do help with balance. As your abs / back / legs get stronger, the balance issues will improve. Any recommendations on a specific Billy Blanks video? Around the same difficulty level as this? I want another "hard" video for weekends when I have time to do second workouts.

Jinksie, I can see how you might find her arrogant. She probably is a little that way. All I can say is that, any arrogance aside, it's a good workout. She covers the whole body, changes the moves a lot so I don't get bored, and it's the first video I've managed to stick with and see my body change.
But if she drives you nuts, it may not be a good fit.

Ok so I'm writing it here so that I could be held accountable: I am going to do 30 DS within the next 2 hours.
It's my day off and it's raining and all I feel like doing is curling up on the couch with a blanket and dozing off in front of the tv.
I skipped the shred all weekend (although I did an hour of biggest loser yoga on saturday) so i need to get back to my shred!!

Azulfire – I think I understand what you mean for your other workout you do. It sounds like something that’s low impact and would make my heart race!
Welcome to all the new people in here! I left for the weekend and come back to a full house, this is awesome!
I am on L3D3 today (still haven't skipped a day, so D23 altogether). Level 3 isn’t too bad. The first day I really thought I was going to die, the pace in the beginning is much faster than the other levels. However, the push ups made a come back and I can actually do them! I was so excited! I hadn’t been able to do a complete one in level 1 and hadn’t tried them while I was doing level 2, so it was a really cool surprise!
Featherfire – I’m sure may have already, but do you possibly have low iron levels? That’s something that can cause you to bruise easily and your body can feel fatigued… Just thought I’d ask.
Jinksie – I actually found her to be motivating. Although sometimes sounding a little better than others now that you mention it… but I didn’t noticed on my own.
Kk140 – Hooray that you worked out today with the shred!! Way to go! Btw… if you don’t mind me asking – Where are you located? Rain today? That’s crazy! It’s hot outside here.. but then again I suppose most of the time it is. :)

Stargzr, that's very well a possibility! I never really thought I had an issue with it in the past as I donate blood on occasion and always passed their test, though last time I barely squeaked by with a second try. I've got bruises on the backs of each of my calves that have been there since January! (attempted to shut the jeep door with my elbow while standing in a snowbank holding two coffees, owies!) I have noticed I'm bruising more than usual, which could also be part of the foot cramping I get, primarily in my left foot.
I just completed the shred for today (sitting here sweating like a horse after a race on a thousand degree day), and really noticed that the pain was only in one foot, rather than both. It used to be in both, and I almost expected it to be worse on the right as it's the one I've injured countless times, but it's not at all now, except if I've been wearing shoes laced too tightly for too long.
The good news is, this is the first day that I've woken up after a hardcore workout day and been in minimal amounts of muscle pain. I only had a little elbow stiffness from hyper extending during tae-bo punches, and some butt muscle aches. Every other time before, I've hardly been able to walk the next day, so this is a great feeling!

Hey Mystical
I just started 30DS last week, this will be day 6 L1 for me. I highly recommend it, but it does hurt. I hadn't realised just how unfit I'd become until I started it. And the first set of strength stuff still kills me, but my recovery is a lot quicker and my technique has significantly improved, all in the space of the last 5 days.
(and I don't mind jillians voice, especially when she says 'just 5 more, 4, 3 ,2 1! )

Yes - thank goodness for the countdowns sometimes! Also, another thing I like about this workout is you know you're not doing anything for more than 1 minute. Usually 30 seconds. Well, I might be old, overweight, out of shape, a wuss, etc. - but I can handle ANYTHING for 30 seconds, right?

Hi all welcome newbies, I hope you find 30 days worthwhile I know I do.
I do not find Jillian arrogant, I see her as someone who is not sure of herself, and very vulnerable. I think the tough act is a smokescreen, to her vulnerability., but at the same time stepping up to the task, of the sudden thrust of her career. Did you know she use to belong to this forum, years ago.?

Jillian part of this forum? That's pretty awesome. It makes me feel like I could really look like her one day (tight body-wise of course).
I did L3D4 today and it's still pretty tough. I think I messed up my ankle somehow because it's bothering me a bit so I traded a couple of the jumping cardio moves to something with less impact on my ankle and it was much better. Those scissor kick things are SUPER AWESOME! I can feel my abs and legs working while I do them and they burn for a while after I'm done. I love it! How are we all doing around here? I have noticed a few people disappeared on us..
Well, keep on truckin' everyone and do your workouts! :) jk

Ah Square One...I was there once. It's enormous. I figured there'd be an Indigo near you when you mentioned being in a bigger town than you had moved from. I'm glad you were able to find the video without ordering it from far far away.
I'm in North York at the north end of Toronto. I grew up in a pretty small town though (no traffic lights). I remember the shock of moving to a more urban place with traffic and buses and noise all night long, and people everywhere.
Anyway, I too will try not to hi-jack this thread with Toronto talk (lest I add to Toronto's reputation for hogging everything :P ) so feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about life in the GTA.

mystical - I believe it's set up to do every day. I would definitely give it a try the first day and see how you feel. If you're ok to go ahead on the 2nd day, then go for it. Personally, I've done it every day with no days off since I started it. I also plan to go back to level 1 when I finish and do it all the way through again doing the more difficult moves. :)
Ok, I finished L3D5 tonight and am feeling well! My body feels so much stronger and I can get through the whole thing without any breaks. It's really awesome to think back to when I started level 1 and see how much my body has improved! I am really excited to finish my first 30days and start over again. I know eventually I will need to get a different video for new workouts, but for now I still like this one and it's giving me results. :)
How is everyone else's workouts going? Still doing it?
