Hey! :welcome2:

-------------
Active Folks Over 50 is a place to talk about fitness and healthy eating information as it relates to weight loss and/or maintenance--and also about any work, fun, hobby, or volunteer activites you're engaged in. In other words, the active part of your life!

Just a few guidelines for this thread:

- Raves about grandkids or ranting about your kids is out of bounds.

- Lengthy discussion of your illnesses, conditions, treatments, and medical procedures in general is also out of bounds on this thread. So is whining about old age!

- Positive stories of vacations taken, volunteer work, or achievements at work or elsewhere are highly encouraged! As are recommendations for books, movies, discussions of weight related issues, etc.

Join in!
----------------------

OK, it's May! And this thread has been running for around two years. In the last couple of weeks, it's been slowing down... So, if it looks like interest has waned, this will be the last month that I start a new one. Of course, others may want to keep it going.

I just want to say--"swine flu" has gotten blown way, way out of proportion. It is really just like any other flu that comes through. We do the same things for it as any other flu. And in case people don't know, we should always be washing our hands, staying home from work or school when sick, etc. I am so fed up with the media frenzy about this. It's causing panic and unnecessary fear! People die of the flu every year, whether they have had the flu shot or not, and so far there is no indication that this flu is any more severe than usual. Honestly. It's simply a distraction so the news media can show us advertising messages. Makes me

I'm glad it's Friday! I may actually get a weekend where I can do something other than my usual work. :broc:

What do other folks have planned?

Jay

Good morning JayEll - The comics this morning reminded me that May Day once meant seeeing the parades of Soviet Missles driving thrrough Red Square as we shuddered.

But today it means that my new Sole E25 Elliptical will be delivered. With a good machine in my house it's gonna be hard to ignore that cardio work could be done right now!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
thanks for setting this list up for another month. I would hate to see this thread end, a great group of people and all. Maybe the thread has been quiet because it is spring and they are out in their gardens. I wish I were out in the garden! But instead I am gearing up for finals in about 10 days and finishing off the last of my assignments. It is hard to believe that another school year is behind me. I will be taking a couple classes this summer but at least I get a little break to be in the garden till then.

I am doing well on my eating program. This week I have allowed myself 1600 cal. and I seldom meet it. I have been walking an hour a day. I am feeling pretty good. I need to add a weight resistance program next. I also need more hours in the day.

Did you ask about the garden? I thought so.
It is doing well. I finally have red potatoes up, I still need to plant 50 lbs of white potatoes. Peas are up. The onion plants look good, even though I had to chase the guineas out of them a couple times. We have many plants waiting in the greenhouse to be planted but it keeps raining all the time.

Have a great day. And do not worry about me, slaving over the books! ;)

Hey BillBlueEyes,

I have been thinking about joining your Beck Thread. I have been reading the book and just got the workbook. As soon as I get it read, if you have space for another person, then I will come by.

Have fun with your new machine. It looks like it will give you a good workout. It is nice to have a way to workout inside when the weather is crummy. We have a couple machines here too. We live in the country, on rock/dirt roads, so the weather really will put a stop to an outdoor workout.

Have a great day.

Hi all - happy to see everyone finding the new thread! April flew by didn't it?

Jay - I agree with you regarding the swine flu. Seems like the media needs some type of disaster to hype - and they will create one if there is a real one. I'm glad I don't watch TV. DH has had some additonal "drills" at work because of the level 5 coding, but otherwise, no one around here is paying any attention.

Bill - new equipment :woohoo: enjoy!

Candy - hopefully this month will improve. Last week was pretty quiet - Jay and I were talking to ourselves for a couple days.

I'm glad it is Friday! What a week. Anyone have anything fun planned for the weekend? I'm hanging out doing Saturday chores - not much fun involved.

Hi Jay and Bill and Candy. Great to see another school year behind you Candy. That must feel good. :book2:
I will be doing yard work this weekend. Want to powerwash the patio and driveway as well as the fence. The paint is peeling off the fence and thought the power wash may get it off. Any thoughts on that anyone? I will have to leave it a while to dry. It is supposed to rain all next week anyway.
My hand is way better. Not a great idea to power wash I suppose but I am the only one doing it so want to get on with it. Get the patio furniture out etc. :beach:
Looks like my weekend will be all about yard work. Big plant sale at one of the churches next weekend.
Cleaned house instead of the gym today and the yard work should give me plenty of exercise. I have a huge pressure washer so that will be a job. Usually end up soaking wet so hope it is warm out.
Hey CD are you still decluttering??
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

JayEll

Hey Jude,

The powerwasher may not take all the paint off--plus won't it kind of blast the paint chips all over?

Do you really have to strip it to paint? Or do you just want to take off a little loose paint? I had to repaint a doorframe some years ago that just had been painted over without any stripping, and so it didn't look very good. Layers and layers, with uneven places where some peeling had happened and then was just painted over.

I found a product that was a gel that you just painted on with a brush--and then let it work for 30 minutes--and then took a scraper to it. It was wonderful!--saved so much effort! I think it was called Zip Strip. You need to use heavy rubber gloves to protect your hands, and maybe put down some paper around the fence posts to catch the stuff as it comes off. But it sure beats a sander or trying to use just a dry scraper.

Anyway... maybe just a little light scraping will do all you need to do, Jude--plus some sanding. It probably doesn't have to be a perfect job.

Bill! Your very own elliptical! Wow, that will leave you with no excuses... not that you had any anyway!

Candy, I love growing my potatoes. But one year my partner's mother was very ill, and I couldn't get up to my garden. By the time I made it up there, the Colorado potato beetles had taken over. It was so sad! I did get some potatoes, but not as many as I could have.

I learned later, though, that I shouldn't have tried to grow potatoes so many years in a row, because the potato beetle eggs get in the soil and then the beetles just get worse and worse if you plant the same thing in the same place. I wasn't using any pesticides--just hand picking them off--that's why they took over.

CD, I'm doing chores, too--but also we've been thinking of trips to take later in the year... cheap trips... there is a good Elderhostel tour of Savannah I'd like to take.

OK, that's it for now!

Good thought about spraying the paint chips all over Jay. I had not thought of that. This is a very old fence, 20 years and it should never have been painted but stained. I think I will just scrap away the loose stuff and paint over. The old guy came by one time and painted over the peeling spots. He did not bother to scrape and then touched up with the wrong color. So now I have a spotted fence. I have suggested that he not be allowed to do the handy work as he is not handy. He painted yellow lines in the guest parking lot that should have been white. He used tape but over sprayed the tape. So we had yellow lines with sort of a halo on each side. Need I say more.
So can not do too much worse than that. My patio window looks out on the yard and this fence so that is the only part I am fixing up.

Hey Jude! This reminds me of my former co-op. One of the guys on the board was cheap beyond belief, and he decided that to fill the cracks in the asphalt road that looped around the community, we should just get together a bunch of volunteers instead of hiring a company. One day he was out there with a bunch of the guys... and they managed to get about 100 square feet done before they all told him he was crazy and quit.

:dunno:

What amazes me is that so many were willing to go along with him...

Today will be a lovely day of light chores on my end. :)

Hi all - good to see so many posts since I was here last :D

Yes, I'm still de-cluttering - 2 rooms to go! I hope to finish before we start getting company the end of June. We will have visitors most of the summer.

DH is working today, so I am getting caught up with some of the deep cleaning this weekend. And, I need to do some meal prep for the coming week. Though, we do have 2 nights of eating out on the schedule - at least I've shed the weight from the B&B trip :)

Gotta fly - I hear the dryer buzzing and I need to get the clothes out so I don't have to iron ;)

Hope everyone has a fun and OP weekend!

JUDE sometimes when power washing an old fence flakes of paint will become lose but all of them may not be removed...appearing to be adhering ok...until you roll paint over it....when it gets wet again it flakes off. Sand...sand...sand!

SCOOTER I have de-cluttered here for a few days...Angie is very happy!

I'm off to get some food prep for the coming week done. Soy milk to make, yogurt to make, fruit to cut up, and rice to cook.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Hey! Yesterday we went to Philippe Park and sat under the trees and looked out on the bay. It was warm and nice, with a comfy breeze. People were out there on jet skiis and boats--even some kayaks doing some sort of class. I had the opportunity to doze off in my chair. We took along some nice snacks, too.

This morning I had dental work and now I have a temporary crown. This is the first one I've had to have. I did plan ahead--just had a nice protein shake, since the numbness hasn't worn off yet. I got some Jell-O made last night, also.

And that's been my day so far. Hope all you are having a better time!

Good day here - another major project dumped on my plate with a May 15 due date, so the next couple weeks look incredibly hectic. I'm preparing and planning ahead to keep some balance in my life.

We have a dinner engagement on Wed. and then the "Spring Fling" for the hospital is on Thur. Lots of eating out this week.

Well, the weather is gorgeous, so I gotta get outside and enjoy it! I think I will cook dinner outside tonight :)

Hi everyone. Powerwashing in the back all done. Fence is repaired and as much loose paint is gone as possible. It will be chippy looking but seeing as this fence will not last too many more years it will do. I used a metal brush a bit and it had a smoothing out effect. I am going to wait till we have a stretch of hot weather before I paint. :o
Sunday I spent recovering from all the bending and shaking. :carrot:

Cd I know you are vegan so what do you eat when you have to go out all the time? Actually what do you eat at the best of times. I would consider doing vegan but have no idea where to start. Any pointers?
What do you cook when company comes?

Jay we had someone come in here and patch our road as well. I gather the council thought they would spend money on it when really it just needs to be ripped up and re done. We have all these squirrley tar marks eveywhere now. They paid big bucks to get it done. :(
I need to get to more of these meetings. We need a younger crowd in this place. Too many old women that have spouses all their lives making all the decisions. We have a management company but he seems to be suffering from permanent burn out.
I may move when I retire so I will just hang in there till then. I will see.
Bill will have to drop over and see what this Beck solution is all about. There are books???

Did not make it to the gym today. Needed sleep more.......could also use a hug today.

Hi everyone. Powerwashing in the back all done.

Bill will have to drop over and see what this Beck solution is all about. There are books???Yay for keeping that fence going. We got 30 years out of our original "20 year" fence.

Yep, there are two books - described in a sentence each at the start of the May Beck Thread (http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170594), but Anne (wndranne) has reviews in the Maintenance Library for both the original book, The Beck Diet Solution (http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157214) and the current book, The Complete Beck Diet for Life (http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=160386).

Feel free to drop by any time.

Yes, you can start with the second book. It covers the same material with one nice improvement where the "Seven Questions Technique" is replaced by the "Cheat Sheet."

The second book also contains an eating plan, which is OK, but most folks around here already know how to choose an eating plan. I liked that her first book just said to go choose one. (In fact it said to choose two, one for a backup.)

Jude - I'm actually vegetarian, not vegan. We do use cheese and milk products - in fact I make yogurt weekly. We converted to a vegetarian lifestyle shortly after DS1 was born. We limited red meat while I was pregnant, and it was a natural transition. Both DH and I grew up as part of the first "junk food generation". Fast food restaurants were born during our adolescence.

We are foodies. We love traveling and eating out. But - we try really hard to incorporate our travel experiences into our plan. We split everything. We order from the appetizer menu often. DH loves beer (has been a microbrewer for almost 30 years), and we love wine. Thus - we select our food options very, very carefully. We are not afraid to custom order. Asking for dressing, or sauces on the side is the norm for us.

A typical restaurant visit would be:
Split the:
Spinach artichoke dip with WW pita
or
Pasta primavera - skip the bread, and order an extra veggie or salad
or
Spinach (or other vegetable) quesadilla (asking if they have WW tortillas and can they cut the cheese in half and add extra veggies)
or
Ravioli dishes (again, customize the sauce)
or
portabello mushroom burger (almost every restaurant seems to have one. Skip the chips or fries and ask for a salad or veggie instead.

I guess the key is to not be afraid to ask for substitutions. 99 percent of the time, they will be happy do do what you ask. Even when NOTHING on the menu is vegetarian, I will politely ask the server to check with the chef regarding vegetarian options. Every single chef has had a delightful dish available - but you have to take the initiative and ask. Many chefs have actually come out to visit with us and ask if we were pleased with the custom dish.

And - if you can - I always - always tip accordingly ;)

As far as cooking at home? Company loves eating at my house. I skip the meat substitute dishes and cook traditional things like
pasta
egg dishes
stir fry
rice dishes
casseroles
bean burritos, tacos, etc.
quesadillas
bean loaf
roasted veggies

If I need to add some protein, I can always add MorningStar Farms or Boca meat substitutes to traditional dishes.

Hi,

Today was a lovely day here, cloudy but cool. I am glad it did not rain, so far this spring we have had plenty. Even though it has been hectic here I still got in my hour speed walk ( I call it speed because for me it is speedy, but that may not be saying much) ;) Today I was determined to get the walk in before dark, it is not that great walking up these dark country roads with a flashlight. I managed to go early and that was much better.

The kids had to take our newest dog in today for a bit of surgery. His name is Fender (think guitar) and he is a Welsh Corgi pup. He had a bit of a male problem the last time we took him in to be neutered so he had to go back for surgery to finish the first job. He seems to be doing ok. He is laying here on the floor beside me looking thoroughly bummed with his big clown collar thing on so that he cannot lick his wound. I was worried about him but he came through ok. He is my son Coyote's dog but I have grown very fond of the little pup.

Today I had a bit of a break from the classwork since I killed myself all weekend so that gave me free time to clean the house and do laundry. So with that bit of fascinating news I will let you all go.

Have a great day tomorrow, this day is almost shot.

Hi. I'm new to the website . I don't know how to navigate it all but I am giving it a try. I have lost a bit of weight and have made made healthy changes and seem to be stuck in the middle somewhere right now. I got on my bike last summer and have started up again. It feels good. I joined a CSA this spring and get fresh organic locally grown produce every week. My morning routine is great. I stick to my smoothie/vitamin plan every day for more than a year now. I bike to the pool and do water aerobics. Today, I am going on a hike after I leave the pool. I get into food trouble later in the day. I am going to try to break that cycle today. I feel like I have alot of common interests with this group. Thanks for being here.

Hey Lexxiss! :wel3fc:

Hope to see you posting often!

Hi again, Candy! I'm having to shift my walking schedule, too. It's now starting to get too hot here in Florida to go for a walk around 10 a.m. During the summer, you have to get out by 8 a.m. or earlier or you melt. I have a gym membership as well, and it comes in handy in the summer. :faint:

Jude, I don't mind the tar marks if that's all that's needed. Sometimes the asphalt is so deep that little cracks don't matter--until plants start growing in them. :yikes:

Here in my new community, they are having the roads ground down and resurfaced--an ongoing project in that they can't do all the roads at once. But once that's done, they should be good for some years.

Bill, thanks for the links to those reviews! I think those books are available at our library.

Hi all, hope you are having a productive and on plan day! Work is still a zoo, but that won't change till the middle fo June. Weather was gorgeous again today, so I got quite a bit of gardening done.

I found out that it is NOT a good idea to do 30 minute of shape boxing and then try to pull weeds. My shoulders and arms started rebelling.

So, I took the dog for a walk in the woods for a while to let my arms recuperate a bit.

I WILL get this gardening done!

Today this Active Folk over 50 found herself doing impromptu toilet repair. The fill valve had been getting flakier and flakier, and finally it just wouldn't stop running. Ooooo kayyyy. So off to a couple of different stores to find the "perfect" replacement part. Actually, it's not hard at all these days to replace--this is a Fluidmaster type fill valve. The only time I needed a tool was to loosen the old fastener under the tank. The new parts go on with only hand tightening.

So, that's my claim to fame! :cb: :cb: :cb:

My mouth is still sore in the back from the earlier dental work. I'm not supposed to chew on anything sticky or crunchy with this temporary crown, and it has really taken a toll on my snacking! I didn't realize how many of my snack foods involve crunching... So I'm having to find alternatives, and I'm afraid the result is less food than I'm used to... Now if only the scale had something nice to say about that...

Hi All,

I hope everyone is having a lovely day. It is not raining here today, nice change. Yesterday it rained all day, again. I am jealous of Laurie getting in so much gardening.

All has been going well here. Yesterday I did not get in my walk because of the muddy roads. So instead I did an hour with a Richard Simmons dvd. It seemed like more work than the walk. Eating has been good, I am staying on the lower end of calories on Simmon's Foodmover plan, about 1200. My daughter brought home fresh strawberries today, dang those were good. It is hard for me to believe that when I was a kid when we had fresh strawberries everyone put sugar on them. When I had my kids, well you know kids they just pick it up and eat it, and the kids showed me how much better strawberries are without sugar.

Warning...I am about to let me ego show here.
Today I finished my last assignment in Astronomy class, except for the final. I figured up my grade and with the score I have now I do not even have to take the final and I will still have an A. I cannot tell you how happy that makes me. Now to just do well in the rest of the classes. :?:

Jay, I can imagine how hot it gets in Florida, walking would get a bit warm. It will be warming up here soon enough. Kansas in the last ten years has turned very humid in the summer and I hate it. I will try not to complain about the heat here, because who really wants to hear it, but it does get hot. We do not have a/c so we just learn to tolerate it. It is easy though to put off exercising. The joke here is that it is cooler in the morning, so how much can be fit into those three hours. Jay I also do not envy you for the plumbing troubles.

Laurie I have never tried to make yogurt out of soy. We make soymilk and when our goat was fresh last winter we made goat milk yogurt and cheese but that is about it. I bet it is good. I picked up a book on making tofu and hope to give that a try soon. I have lots of soybeans. Before school I use to make almost everything here from scratch.

Everyone have a fun day

Hi Everyone
Thanks Laurie for all the vegetarian ideas. Do you ever cook lentil dishes. I just found a lentil recipe in the paper for shephards pie. Sounded good. A lot of carbs maybe though. :o
Candy I have to comment on what a different lifestyle you live from us in the city. Sounds wonderful. And congrats on those school marks. You are doing a huge job there taking care of everything and school.

Jay sorry to hear about the dental problems. Nothing more uncomfortable than a temporary crown. I am afraid I have more crowns than one can count. They say it was no flouride in the water when we were young. Oh well. :D
Hi to Lexxiss glad to hear you are doing well.
Billie I am going to see if I can get that book at the library.

I am finally getting into a better place with my food. My new mantra is that it is a choice. Do I want to eat healthy or just stay the way I am. Nothing is going to happen till I eat OP. I have had 2 good days and that is great for me. Been to the gym the last 2 days as well. Been hitting the gym usually 3 times a week but am trying for 5.
I am off to get groceries after work and that is always a challenge. It is cold and raining out so may as well get it out of the way.
Hope you are all having a good evening.

Jude :book2:

Hi folks,

Jude, I must be lucky, because this temporary crown is just like my tooth! In fact, if it weren't a little smooth compared to my teeth, I wouldn't know the difference. But my mouth is still kind of raw from having the work done.

Jude, you're right, it's a choice. If you keep doing what you always did, you'll keep getting what you always got. So stay with your change!

Candy, astronomy! I was working on an astronomy textbook not too long ago. What was your favorite topic in the class? I just love astronomy. Also, I lived for years without a/c in Massachusetts, and in the summer there are plenty of days when you might as well be in Fla. It was miserable. I will never live without a/c again if I can help it.

I used to make yogurt. It's not hard at all! I even had some really good starter at one time--an old family recipe from an Armenian friend. But that was a long time ago. My favorite store-bought yogurt is still Stonyfield Farm. I don't like yogurts with added sugar and such.

Anyone like kefir? It's a drink rather than a solid--sort of between buttermilk and yogurt. I like it a lot, but like most milk products I have to be careful of the calories--even with the lowfat version.

CD, are your arms over being sore?

Hi, Bill!

Hi, Freda!

Hi, Lori, wherever you are!

And  to you other folks.

Hi Jay - I like Stonyfield too if I buy storebought yogurt. It makes a good culture (lots of good bacteria). Still a bit sore from boxing, but in a good way. The last two days have been too crazy to get in any boxing - just some yoga. Back at it tomorrow though!

Congrats on the toilet repair! I had to do it once, and other than sticking my hands in that cold water to get the process going, it isn't too bad.

Jude - I do like lentils. I love lentil soup, and make a crock pot of it quite often. I have a lentil loaf recipe that I like too. Good protein source :D

Candy - I've made my own tofu - it is a lot of work. I actually used to make it and sell it at a little natural food store when the kids were little. DH made a tofu press for me that allowed me to make nice squares - 6 at a time. I haven't done it since I blew the safety valve on my pressure cooker with soybeans. Now that we have the soymilk maker, I should give it a try. It would be sooooo much easier. Hmmm, something to do in my "spare" time.

Lexxiss :welcome: Glad you joined us! I used to have trouble with eating after work - I would scarf down everything in sight when I got home. I need to have a protein snack before I leave work. That way, I can come home and exercise before I do anything else. Eating protein every few hours seems to be a key for me.

Hope you all have a great Friday!
Time for bed already - what a week!

Hi everyone. Happy Friday. :carrot::carrot::carrot:
What is it about the end of the day that makes us feel like eating. I guess it is a reward for all the stuff we did in the day. For me it is the workplace and my late hours. Not a good combination. I have asked about the terrible food they leave around for us but nothing has changed. They said they were going to change the vending machines when the contract runs out but heaven knows when that is. I never carry money so they are not the problem it is all the free food left lying around.

So Happy Mothers Day to everyone that is a mother out there. :val3:

I myself am going to have a nice day. It is going to be lovely and sunny so I plan a walk to the beach and maybe a skinny latte. Then I am going to spend some time on my quilt. I asked a friend to come out for dinner if she is free. She has kids so she hopes they will spend time with her. But if not then I will cook us something. No sign of my kids but that is nothing new.
When in doubt make other plans.

My food has been pretty good and the scale is starting to move. I will need extra willpower to get through Sunday though. :?:

Just need to find lots to do to keep me busy. There is a huge plant sale at a local church tomorrow so I am going to buy some flowers for my yard. They will need to be planted.
How is everyones day going?

Debbie - no slips, :woohoo: Fantastic. Sounds like you had a great day! So glad you have you with us, we just love new folk!

Jude - glad the scale is moving :D Make a plan for Sunday - no need to have it derail you. You CAN do this!

Hi to everyone else! I hope your Friday was terrific!

A good day here. Went out with friends after work, the grocery shopping and finished the day around the firepit with DH. I saw several people today that I hadn't seen in a couple years. It was fun to see people's reactions to a 95 lb smaller me. I haven't had that for a while, most folk have gotten used to the "new" me.

Tomorrow is supposed to be colder and rainy - which means I may get some indoor stuff done. :cross:

My plans for Sunday are pretty simple - church then visit MIL and call my Mom and probably spend an our or so talking to DS1 and DIL.

Mother's Day is the one day of the year (well, one of a few - Christmas and Easter too) that I refuse to go out to eat. I hate the crowds, the wait, and the food. And then there is the NOISE (some things about wearing hearing aids I hate - and crowded rooms is one of them).

Not sure what we are eating (I'm certainly not cooking), but whatever it is - it will be at home :D

Whatever your plans, I hope you have a fun weekend!

Hi All:sunny:
Just checking in. My new habit is to sit down in the morning with my coffee and spend some time with my new friends:comp: It's a great to have a time to contemplate and plan for my day.

Jude, you reminded me of how emotional my eating can be. When something is amiss in my life in my relationships with others I can feel this tug in my gut that says eat eat eat. I hope you may find some peace in your heart on Sunday and stay on plan. Like Laurie said, "You can do it!"

Laurie, I perused your before and after photos this morn. Congratulations! I want what you have. I have to admit I am crying a bit. I really hate having my picture taken and wish it were different. I want very much to be able to smile and have confidence and be able to show my pictures to everyone. I am getting better about taking pictures, but unless there is no other choice, I'm usually not the subject.:(

So after my moment of pain, I am going to sign off and face the day. I had a clean day yesterday:cp: so I can do it again today. I am going to a memorial service and there will be lots of food, so I am going to be vigilant. There....I'm feeling better now.

I just recognized that I had not made any plan for exercise and now I have. I will keep my bike on the car and pedal a bit from the park while everyone else is eating and drinking.:bike2:

Best Regards!

Debbie - thanks for your kind words! Look how far you have come already! You WILL be posting your goal pictures and I WILL be reading your goal story here at 3FC.

Starting the day with a plan and accountability (posting here) really does make a difference. Social eating can be tricky and challenging. I choose to look at those occasions as a challenge - how close to staying on plan can I come? What choices can I make that help me toward my goal of health and fitness? I hope you enjoyed your bike ride! :congrat:

Well, shape boxing is waiting - I'm off to get in my workout for today. Hope everyone has a fun and productive and on plan weekend!

Hi everyone!

I think what makes us want to eat at the end of the day has several components, but the main one is that it's time to relax, and for many, relax = eat and/or drink. Also, it's usually been awhile since the last snack, so a person is probably hungry! So--an opportunity for planning, knowing that the desire will come up. For example, a low-cal "appetizer" while fixing dinner, or a cup of favorite tea, made slowly and savored.

Lexxiss, glad to see you posting! Don't feel sad--you can change this! Stick with it... :cheer2:

CD, I often check in with your photos--they are so encouraging! I also love to read your posts because you're a caring and positive person.

Well, today is the first day that I have managed to get back to my morning walks. Are you all shocked to hear that I didn't do them for awhile? Two things led to my losing track. One was the change of season--when it starts to be summer in Fla., you have to get out earlier to do anything outside. So, in the fall/winter/spring, I could go walking at any time; now I have had to shift so that I get out there around 8 a.m. or earlier. The other thing was the dental work last Monday. It's hard for me to believe that it could throw me so much, but evidently it did. Anyway, I went this morning and renewed my appreciation for my walks. I get my metabolism going, get the kinks out, get some sunlight!! :cheer3: and also hear the birds and bees and smell the flowers.

I've also not been doing as much at the gym, although I still go just as often. So that's the next thing to improve.

Today I ought to work outside later on, but I am soooo not in the mood. I think I'll catch up with my work instead...

No mothers or Mother's Day plans here--except that we may go to see Star Trek. We'll be avoiding restaurants.

CD, what does the "shape" in shape boxing refer to?

Jay

Aw, Jay - thanks so much for your kind words! Coming from you - they mean a lot.
Shape Boxing is the term that Gold's Gym uses to refer to that section of their workout. You go through routines that are basically boxing, ducking, and weaving combinations. The instructor gives you tips on perfect form like, "don't forget to turn from the waist and use your lower body for power." From what I can see, the shape is mostly upper body contouring, with some core worked in. Since you are shifting your weight front-back-front-back throughout the whole routine, it is a cardio workout (thus the name of the program) which does incorporate the use of the legs, just doesn't target them.

The exercise portion of the program has a broader body focus and includes running, push ups, crunches, squats, and jumping rope (in my dreams only:lol:). Here (http://goldsgymgame.us.ubi.com/)is a link to a good description.

Good for you getting out walking again. Don't discount what you went through with your dental work. It took me several weeks to feel "normal" again after the last dental surgery I had. You are one of the most dedicated and consistent chicks around these parts - I'm betting that you will be back into your exercise groove very soon!

LOL - I think one of the nicest things about being over 50 is that I follow my moods a lot more when choosing chores. I do tend to put off things that aren't appealing - though sometimes that gets me in trouble ;)

Speaking of which, I need to stop typing and get my vacuuming done.

Enjoy your weekend all!

LOL - talking to myself again :dizzy:

Hope everyone had a great Mother's Day! Typical Sunday for us - church, shopping, chores, visiting relatives, talking to family, and cooking for the week. We did take the scooters out to visit DH's mom.

I made a great cheese spread for crackers - very simple
1 part Laughing Cow (I like the light herb garlic)
1 part plain yogurt
sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese
season to taste (I add Mrs. Dash and another seasoning blend that I make)

Gotta fly - we are going to get a hard freeze tonight - I have plants to cover :(

Wow, CD, how can you be having a hard freeze at this point in MAY?? Weird!

We are at 90 degrees here... and no rain... not good! Water is rationed for lawns, etc. Can't wash cars, driveways.

We went to see Star Trek at the morning showing. $5! The theater was pretty full, even at that hour (around 10 a.m.). Any Trek fans here? Go see it! It's good entertainment. Somewhat corny in some ways, but hey, it's Star Trek. LOVE that Spock!

Oh--for movie treats I had a 1.5 ounce box of raisins that I brought with me. These days, movie popcorn just doesn't have much appeal. Even the smell is a bit off... although of course, it reminds me of movies in days gone by.

For dinner we had steak! and salad--nice big salad with olives, blue cheese, edamame, and light balsamic dressing. Pretty high in calories, but very yummy--and I think I had room for the day.

Now, what did you all do?

Another hard freeze again tonight :(

Jay - I remember my brother's wedding in June and it snowed ****

Thanks for the info on Star Trek. DH is a confirmed Trekie - I've seen all the originals, and all the movies, and even the spinoff series - but I'm not quite the devotee that he is.

Sounds like he would definitely enjoy it!

Absolutely AWESOME job with your movie snacks! I can't take much more than that with me because I will eat mindlessly while watching the film. Raisins are a perfect snack to take - what a good idea.

Gotta fly - church meeting again tonight. Hopefully we can take the scooters, even though it is still a bit chilly.

I'm hoping we'll get lucky and have a thunderstorm today. That's the usual summer pattern.

Are you still freezing up there, CD? I remember snow in June in the mountains of Utah, but golly, that was the mountains!

I watched the Biggest Loser finale. Generally I don't like that show--I think they do dangerous things, and all the emphasis is on exercise--but I wanted to see who won. I'm glad it was the oldest woman! And I'm glad that the oldest man won the at-home contest.

Indeed, it is kinda lonely here. You may be right about this thread having run its course. Of course I LOVE talking with you ;)

Still cold, we did get rain today. We needed it so that was good. Couldn't scoot, though.

I don't watch BL either, but I did watch the last 10 minutes since so many MI folk were involved this year. I was also happy to see older folk winning :)

I am currently attending a pre-retirement webinar. Trying to educate myself regarding all my options as the next several years unfold.

I am really noticing a difference in my upper body since starting boxing. I am liking the results!

Hi everyone. Not lurking. Have been so busy this week with stuff. Been trying to get time at work to post.
Unfortunately have not made it to the gym once this week and do not like that. Have had something I had to do every day this week. I have next week off though and it will be a week at the gym.
My food has been pretty good. Been to a stress management course and a course on food and mood. Some interesting things. Got some good ideas on managing stress and that should help with the food.
I watched BL as well. Now I enjoy it. Certainly a lot of exercise. What I get out of it is how honest some of the contestants are about their journey.
Definitely a good inspiration from the older winners.

Hey Jay you sound like you are doing all the right things there. Myself I never eat at the movies. Stopped years ago. Well if I eat popcorn I would have to have a drink and then I would have to pee.... so just enjoy the show.
I am not a trekkie. Have never watched even one of them.
Laurie I do not know where you find the hours in the day. You sure are a busy woman. Great to hear how exercise is such a priority for you. I am getting there. I am liking the gym but this week too many meetings got in the way.
Linda must still be away lending support to family.
Great weather there Jay. Too hot for me. We have rain. No freeze but it sure is wet.

I went to my friends for Mothers day. She has 4 daughters and they all made dinner for everyone. It was fun.
Myself I was home till 330pm but no phone call, no card. Yikes where did I go wrong!! :(

Such is life. Food could have been better but was not a disaster. So was happy with that. It was nice to be out with people that like me.

Hope you are all having a good week. Don't close the thread I would certainly miss it.
Take care everyone......Jude :)

Hey Jude! Nice to see you. I hope you get that gym time in next week! :cb:

We finally had some rain last night, and are getting more today. I'm glad it's finally started, and I hope it becomes more regular. We're still burnin' up down here.

OK, the truth is that I've been slacking off in the past few weeks. I always try to accentuate the positive, but I need to 'fess up. I've put on a few pounds instead of dropping a few. So, you all are going to be my witnesses: Tomorrow is the beginning of a new weight loss phase for me. My plan runs from May 15 to Aug. 15. There's a weight goal there, but I'm not going to worry about that number. I am going to focus on how many days I can keep my average calories on target, however. And of course, I have exercise in there as well.

Yeah, I'll let this thread stay open for awhile...

Jude - good to hear from you girl! As far as fitting in exercise, some days I just have to sneak it in there. A HUGE piece for me is having multiple things that I can do at home that are time-bound. I have several of the 10 Minute Solutions DVDs. I can CERTAINLY find 10 minutes somewhere in my day to sneak in something. On those days when I know I'm not going to even make it home before 9 p.m., I try to work in little things throughout the day - a 10 minute walk around the building, park 4 blocks away and walk the rest of the way to work, etc.

While my plan is not scientific, and serious exercise buffs would just shake their head at me - hey, I'm a 50+ chickie, and SOMETHING is better than NOTHING. I always look at it as "any exercise is a good".

Jay - we are here for you! I know you will make your goal - once you set your mind to something, not much seems to get in your way. Let is know if we can help

An OK day here - a little slower paced today. We met with a vendor for lunch at my favorite restaurant. I ordered my favorite dish and brought half back for tomorrow's lunch. :D

 We had wind gusts that were really intense today - I wasn't sure I was going to be able to keep my scooter upright. There are some disadvantages to losing all this weight ;)
Yoga for me today. My allergies are really bothering me, so I'm opting for a flexibility routine that doesn't make breathing any more difficult ;)

Hope you all have a fun Friday planned!

Good evening to you all. I am here at work. :?: Someone just walked by with yet another box of donuts. Just said no thanks and kept on walking to get my water. I am finding the more I say no the less the cravings are. Not a lot but better than before. I just have to believe what people keep telling me. :D
Still no exercise today but the food has been good. :carrot::carrot:
I am down a couple of pounds but the trick is to keep it there and to keep going down.
I have this 6 pounds that I seem to run up and down. So now I am at the bottom of it. I would like my goal to be out of the 230's by the end of the month. That would be great. No reason if I stay on track.
DD might come for a visit next weekend. Hmmm might not help the staying on track. I have set some boundaries so she might skip it. Who knows. But I do plan to get in a good week of exercise and healthy eating.
My goal for this week coming is to eat OP but mainly to eat on time. I have a tough time with weekends not eating till noon and then by 4pm I am starving. So where did lunch go and what time would supper be. So this week I am going to pay attention. It is easier at work so will see how the week goes.
Good luck with your goal Jay you will do it. Just follow what you did last time. Isn't it a shame that weight would not just go down and stay down.

Laurie I did not know there was such a thing as a 10 minute dvd workout. I have a tredmill in my garage and I have often thought just do 15 mins on that. Well in winter it is too cold out there. It is just about warm enough to start that. So will maybe add 15 mins of time even if it is just on the weekend. Not sure I want to be doing the tredmill at 10pm when I get home. But who knows what the summer might bring.
One thing I do know is that success breeds success. I am just trying to get a little success working.

Glad you are all here. Hope the others drop in to say hi.

Talk to you all tomorrow........Jude

Hey Jude!

Isn't it a shame that weight would not just go down and stay down.

It won't stay down if I overeat, and I did overeat. Perhaps the dental work set me off--I don't know. But I know exactly how I went up again--I can't even pretend to be puzzled. :(

I think everyone who has managed to become obese has to face the fact that the way they "normally" have been eating in the past is never going to work for weight maintenance. In a way, I wish that I had been oversnacking on really good foods instead of just having too many nuts and chocolate chips.

OH WELL! Today is my new start. I know I can count on you for support.

Hi all, hope you are having an OP day!
Jude, the videos I use are part of a series (10 Minute Solution). If you Google it, you will find them. There are oodles of them - pilates, dance, weights, yoga, balance ball, etc. I have 7 in the series. There are 5 - 10 minute workouts on each DVD. Usually divided by: upper body, lower body, core, total body & flexibility.

Jay, your honesty is so refreshing. I roll my eyes at the numerous threads that bemoan a gain because the poster went on a 3 day binge.

If I overdo any food, it is nuts. For probably 20 years, I didn't eat nuts or nut butter because they were "bad", "high-fat" foods. Lot of good that did me

I added healthy fats to my diet when I started this journey. I think all of those years of NOT having them, has me sometimes wanting them more than is prudent. I've found that I still have to weigh/measure them, otherwise :yikes:

A really quiet day here today. I came home from work yesterday with a nasty sore throat. I assumed that it was allergy related (not unusual this time of year after a hard rain). But, the accompanying 100+ temperature is NOT allergy related. Thus, I'm having a very quiet day on my couch with my PDA, computer, audio books, and my pillow.

I think my schedule has caught up with me. :( Thankfully, the several items that had deadlines at work, were all completed by yesterday afternoon. I think I knew I was getting sick, because I stayed late to submit everything, instead of waiting until today.

On a happier note, I ordered new shades for the living room and they came today. They are lovely. One downside of having a projector instead of a TV, is that you need a darkened room to get a good crisp image. My light filtering pleated shades just aren't enough to do the job.

Maybe my scores on the Wii will improve

Then again, probably not

Have a great weekend all!

G'morning all! Happy Saturday!

Jude - sounds like you have a fun Sunday planned! Enjoy! Take a snack with you just in case dinner doesn't fit your plan ;)

I'm feeling a bit better today - but still running a 100+ temp. :( I think "feed a cold, starve a fever" is where my body is at right now - I'm below my low bumper weight - so, Jay - feel free to send a couple of those lbs up here to MI.

It is a rainy, cold day here in northern MI. Kinda depressing. But, we need the rain, so I won't complain. I do have quite a few things planned for tomorrow, so I'm just gonna lay low and hope this fever breaks today.

On a happier not, the memorial weeping crabapple tree we planted last year in honor of FIL is just starting to blossom. It is absolutely breathtaking! :D

Hey!

Jude, I bet we won't be seeing too much of you during your week off, but I hope you'll give us a few reports! I would love to go out on a boat... My family did a lot of boating and fishing when I was growing up. They were some of the best times.

CD, I'd be happy to send a couple of pounds up your way... gosh, to have such a problem... But I do hope that with a fever and all, you'll please take it easy! No use waiting until it gets worse.

I sure hope that meowee gets better soon.

CD, have any pix of that tree? It sounds lovely! I would like a nice flowering tree... but not one that then makes fruit. Of course, that's sort of impossible, now that I think of it. Duh.

Jude, working at home has advantages in that no one walks into my office with a tray of goodies. So no temptation there. Also, I have all my standby foods readily available, and not many business lunches to contend with. And no office parties! The downside is that if I get going on the wrong snack, there's not much to stop me (except my partner... but her main concern is that if it's something she likes, it gets replaced).

Working at home also has the downside of isolation. I'm not an extravert anyway, but it would still be nice to have some co-workers to talk with now and then. I miss that part of having a work group. Interactions take place via email, mostly, and occasional phone.

Jude, you did talk about the Food and Mood classes. Tell us more about what you're learning.

Today and tomorrow I have no work. I am finally caught up. :faint: So, of course I'm finding all sorts of little tasks. What's that? Go somewhere and have fun? Hmmm...

See ya!

Yes Jay - go somewhere - have FUN! Those tasks will be there when you get back. You talked about some short trips this year - and - if not this weekend, then why not spend some time planning them. I will post some pictures of the tree when it goes into full bloom (just starting now).

I'm doing a bit better this afternoon, my temp is slowly starting to drop, and I'm getting a few things done around the house (dusting, laundry, paying bills, etc.). My appetite is returning as well and I'm hoping to get some cooking for the coming week done later tonight.

The upside to spending so much time with my computer is that we have thoroughly researched our trip for next weekend. We know what plays we want to see, where we want to eat, even what bus to take to get to the zoo :D

Today I have some more cleaning to do... HAHAHA!!! But most of it is decluttering, and I know you approve of that, CD.

I didn't eat enough yesterday, and I was feeling just gaunt with hunger by the evening as well as having no energy. I checked, and I had set my target too low. I keep forgetting I am now a fit person, not a sedentary one! :cheer2: Adjustments have been made now...

Jay - do tweak that calorie cap for the day. It is constant trial and error. I never liked "The Daily Plate" or my "Calorie King" software because they added back in my exercise calories.

That being said, I do like the WW approach of "flex". Too often in the past I obeyed my charts and graphs instead of listening to my body.

I calorie cycle just naturally. I eat within a calorie range each day. I do have to put a weekly total limit in place, just to keep me from eating at the upper end of the range continually

It was a lot easier to just plan for X number of calories each day, and plan out what I would eat EXACTLY. And a lot of maintainers still do exactly that.

But I think it is healthier in the long run - for me anyway - to work on eating like a thin person - to listen to my body more. I'm a work in progress - that's for sure

I'm doing better today - still stuffy and sneezing, and I made it through being liturgist at church without any embarrassing incidents :D It just feels like full blown allergies right now. Nothing that sugar-free cough drops and some Early Grey tea can't sooth.

I am going to let the Roomba do its thing today and do a bit of cooking for the week (which with all my gadgets isn't a big deal ) and call it good.

If it warms up (below freezing again last night) I hope to sit out in the garden and enjoy my tea.

I'm off to reacquaint myself with a couple Shakespeare plays, in prep for next weekend.

I wish you a fun and BALANCED Sunday!

CD, I use FitDay. Is that what you have been using? I seem to remember that. Anyway, FitDay has an option to add in exercise calories, and I did that for awhile, but these days I find that if I just choose the correct activity level for my metabolism, I don't have to track exercise. In fact, I'd rather not because the calories estimated to have been burned can be so inaccurate.

Yeah, it's really good to listen to one's body! And not to one's mouth!

I definitely like the idea of eating like a thin person--and that approach worked for me during the first, oh, year and a half of my maintenance! I was still tracking much of that time, but not all the time. But things went the wrong way last October, and I've been struggling since, back and forth. Now it's time to go back to losing.

A Roomba! How do you like that? Our house isn't large enough that it would make sense to have one of those.

It's certainly warm enough here, but rainy. We're going to have rain the next three days, which is a good thing!

I'm off to step class now. Can't let rain get in the way, or I wouldn't make it to the gym.

I hope you're feeling better! Hi to all our readers!

Jay - I have the PC version of Fitday and used it for most of my journey. I switched to the PDA version of Calorie King just because it was easier to track. I did turn it off in Fitday as well. No option to do so in the other products.

DH and I were discussing moving at some point in the future. Downsizing to a house that is easier to maintain, etc. For now, the Roomba earns its keep - particularly since it likes to clean the pet hair from under things - the kind of cleaning that I really don't like to do.

I'm off to take a nap - not much sleep last night. I hope this thing runs its course soon, I'm a crabby, crabby soul today!

Later, gators!

The weather is glorious here! I took a picture of the memorial tree (for FIL) that we planted last spring.

CD, that is a beautiful tree! I'd like to have one in my front yard here! But they might not like the climate. Perhaps a flowering dogwood...

Today was a strange day that has left me disgruntled. I agreed to help my friend go computer shopping over in Tampa, at the closest Apple store. The appointment was for 11, so we left around 10:15. Naturally we have a blustery, rainy day today. Well, to make a long story short, it took all day. We didn't get home until 5. This was not what I had planned (or what she had planned, for that matter).

She got the system she wanted, and all the bells and whistles needed. But gee whiz! First of all, we didn't eat lunch until 1:00, and by then I was about to faint, even though I had eaten a snack when we left. So, where to go? Food court. I did pretty well--got a plate of cajun style chicken with double vegetables--mostly cabbage, which I love. OK, so then it was back to the store... and more talking and pricing and explanation blah blah blah. Got out of there, famished again. Starbucks. Chai latte and an old fashioned doughnut... :fr: What was I thinking? Way too sweet. I drank 1/3 of the tea and ate half the doughnut and threw the rest out.

So here we are, home again... and I'm under my calorie count for the day, but way over on percentage of fat... Bleah! :p Dinner this evening is going to be a drained can of water packed tuna with hot sauce and some crackers, and then I'm done. Chalk it up to a successful if not ideal strategy.

And I'm a day behind on my work now, which makes me very irritated, but what can you do?

Are you feeling better, Laurie? I hope so!

Jay :cp: You are AWESOME! Great job on the food - under very difficult circumstances! Throwing out food at Starbucks is a major accomplishment!

I hope your friend appreciates all of your time and effort! While a day away from the routine is nice, it does come with a cost :(

I am feeling much, much better. Finally! I went bra shopping after work. Something I have desparately needed to do and not done for way too many lbs. Unfortunately, this small town does not have much of a selection in my size :( But, I did find a couple nice Hanes ones at Walmart that will work.

I gotta fly - I still have to pack for the trip. I probably won't be back to post again until Monday or Tuesday.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe and ON PLAN weekend!

This is my first visit, I am so looking forward to meeting new people and a support team in losing those extra pounds. I have lost my discipline and I'm eating without control. Being single now, one can read a lot into this. But, I really don't want a larger wardrobe. Wanting very much to get this reset button operating. Looking for all suggestions.

Hey perkins22! :wel3fc:

Nice to see someone here! I guess all the other active folks are off being active!

Suggestions... well, first of all, I'd ask whether you have lost weight in the past, and what method (or methods) you have used. More information might help folks come up with ideas!

If you feel like your eating is out of control, make one small rule that you decide not to break today. Not sixteen rules--just one. It could be, no full-sugar soft drinks today. It could be, only 1 slice of whole-grain bread per meal. It could be, eat baby carrots as a snack food today. See what I mean? Don't try to solve everything at once, but do start with something.

Cheers! :cheer:

Hello! I'm new, and looking for a place to belong. Since I'm over 50, and ya'll seem like such nice people, this might be a good place to start!

I've been on my diet forever - but started in ernest last Summer when I got back from vacation and was shocked that I gained so much in such a short time. Over the next 6 months I managed to lose about 6 lbs - then my daughter got married. Nothing makes you wake up and smell the coffee like mother of the bride pictures~! I got busy, and since January have lost 32 lbs. I feel like asking everyone to gather back together, and let's take those wedding family pictures again!

The diet I've been is one of those where you eat their packaged food and can't eat much of anything else. I've decided I've gone as far with them as I can, and recently joined WW online. I'm loving being able to eat fruit again! And I've actually started losing weight again.

Mainly I'm looking for encouragement and support from people who know what I'm going thru. Being over 50 makes everything harder, from exercise (I'm trying to get enthusiastic about pilates, now that I'm able to get down on the floor - and up again) to losing and keeping the weight off.

I hope everyone is having a good Memorial Day. Hope to get to know you soon!

Hi ALL - I'm Baaacckkkk!
Just a quick post to say that we made it back from Chicago safely. AWESOME trip - more details to follow, I'm sure!!!!

Needless to say, I will be joining you all in your new June ON PLAN resolutions. Given the phenomenal restaurant choices we had in Chicago, I will be thrilled if the scale only creeps up a couple lbs. (which is what I planned for).

I will 'fess up tomorrow and put together an accountability plan. Given my summer of "company" (6 weeks of visitors), I need to make sure that 120 is a real number

Catch up with everyone tomorrow.

OK, I've got an extra lb. to lose. My weight was up 3 lbs. this morning - two of which I had already planned for. Back on plan this week!

Chicago is the BEST for vegetarian fare. Lots of strictly vegetarian restaurants, and so many others that have a great selection. Back home we usually have the choice of one or two items on the entire menu.

My favorite restaurant on the trip was Karyn's Raw Cafe (http://www.karynraw.com/Gourmet-Menu/). They had a Sunday brunch that was absolutely amazing. Pricey - but we had a $25 certificate that made it worth the splurge :)

Karyn's Cooked also had some wonderful food! We really enjoyed both locations.

The surprise hit was Handlebar (http://handlebarchicago.com/) which is a "biker" (as in pedal type) bar/restaurant. We had an amazing asiago penne veggie dish - one of the best pasta dishes I've had!

The Chicago Diner (http://www.veggiediner.com/wp/) is a favorite - good old fashioned comfort food - vegetarian style. The avocado tostada was scrumptious!

Of course DH's absolutely favorite part of the trip is ALWAYS the Triple Chocolate Stout Cheesecake with an oatmeal stout to chase it down. (There is the extra lb - right there - even though we split it ;)

Thankfully, Chicago is a WALKING city. We barely used our transportation pass and chose to walk almost everywhere. We averaged 9 miles a day :D

The plays were good - with "Twelfth Night" at the Shakespeare theater on the pier being our absolute hands-down favorite!

We rounded out the trip with a trip to the zoo and several parks, the Beer Garden on the end of the pier had different bands each night, and fireworks on Sunday :)

CD, thanks for the rundown on vegetarian fare in Chicago! I've never visited the city--just zipped through the airport. I have to say, when I read things like Triple Chocolate Stout Cheesecake I am soooo glad that I'm not fond of cheesecake. Well, there has to be something I can pass up!

Hi all - hope you had a good day! I'm still trying to get caught up after being gone. Back at it with the shape boxing today!

DH signed me up to be on his "team" at work for "Let's Get Moving Northern Michigan". It is a wellness competition among the cities/towns up here. So, in addition to getting rid of those couple of Chicago lbs., we are trying to help out the hospital pharmacy team. All the walking in Chicago counted, so we are actually helping the team quite a bit :)

Hi everyone. I am still here.

Wanted to say to Lori what a shock and hopefully you are managing ok. :(
You are in our thoughts. Hope things pick up.

I have been trying to load my picture of my quilt for you all to see. It turned out amazing. But it was not fun to make because the velvet is slippery and frays. Laurie I ended up zig zaging every seam. :?:

I shrunk the pictures to the size of a pinhead and the attachment still failed.
Kept saying not a valid image file. So that was that. I have given up in great frustration.

Now I have not been to the gym yet but am getting back into the mood. I know that sounds weird but the head has to be willing too.

I just realized that I sent a message yesterday that does not seem to be here. Hmmm.:censored:
Jay I was answering your question on the Food and Mood groups. It was great. I was thinking food then mood but no it was about eating the right things that can determine your state of mind. First one is omega 3 and it is the building blocks of the brain and the next one mentioned is folate (folic acid). There was more mentioned but it seems that the healthier your diet the less prone you will be to depression etc. It was all very interesting. It was put on by the dieticians from the local hospital. :bravo:

Had a night on exercise by an exercise specialist too. Her expectations were very high. She hoped everyone would strive for an hour of cardio and weight training every other day. No excuses for age.

So I have my exercise plan all ramped up again. I have a chart called Eight Minutes in the morning that is off the internet. It does 2 weight training exercises every day. Moving around all the muscle groups. So I am going to incorporate that in with my cardio. Lately I have been only doing cardio but need to step it up a bit. It is easier to work 2 exercises everyday for me. More likely to get them done. Then I have this whole regime for my back as I have arthritis in my back. So that is supposed to be done everyday too.

Hard to find time to work!!!:cb::cb::cb:

Thanks for the instructions Laurie but just could not get it going. I was going to send my picture to you and see if you could load it but I could not load it to email either.
Sounds like you had a fabulous trip. Why Chicago? Never been there but sounded pretty interesting.

My food was good until yesterday and my weight was down but today not so good. Food again here at work and there I was munching on cookies. Jeez.
I am mad at myself now.
I have been doing so well and do not want to lose the momentum. My cravings are down. Not sure what happened today. I sure hate having to be tempted every single day at my workplace.
Oh well no one is listening here. Lots of overweight women here too.:soap:

Does anyone get that British show on tv called How to Look Good Naked?? Fabulous fun show. It is on the womens channel. Now I know the states brought out one as well but did not do near as good a job as the Brits.
It was on at 10pm on Tuesday.
Well I had better get back to work.... here is to an OP day tomorrow.
Cheers Jude

Jude - it isn't you - the site is broken. I have seen several other posts complaining of the same thing. Hopefully, they can get attachments working again soon. I really want to see that quilt!!

 don't fret over the work eating, just get back at it. Have a plan for when those cookies appear - because, if your office is like mine - they WILL!!!! I buy myself special ON PLAN indulgences to keep in my drawer at work. When I get those cravings for free office food, I treat myself instead.

A good day here - the weather is still cold and rainy, but the gardens are loving it! No scooting all week :( and no evenings around the firepit either. I'm hoping the weekend is better.

Hope you had a good day too!

Thanks CD! I will try the picture again at a later date. I was wondering as I have loaded pictures before. :D

I finally seem to be getting over this free food at work. I was thinking what Jayel had said about only eating something that was really worth it. ;)

One of the staff came over to my desk this afternoon with a plate of things while I was on the phone and offered me something. I took a piece of loaf cake without thinking. More to be polite than anything. Well this was nice of her but it was not the kind of food that I would chose to eat anyway. Just very processed bargain basement kind of stuff. I left it sitting there and when I went for water I took it to the kitchen and chucked it. :woohoo:

Wow this is getting somewhere. I am finding I am slowly taking the time to think about whether or not I want to eat all that sugar and fat and flour. Usually there is something else going on and I am realizing that no amount of food is going to fix it. :nono:

I am finding that the more I have control the less the cravings are getting.
I have been able to eliminate the so so stuff anyway. I did well on my holidays. I also find letting myself have the odd treat helps even if it is not OP. Then I try to remember why I thought it was so necessary.

I have a long way to go but I do feel like I am having some success whereas a month ago I just craving all the time.

It is great to be able to come here and share. I am taking control of a few things that are emotional and were my excuse for eating. Maybe I have just decided to be better to myself than I used to.
Anyway it is feeling better. I have set ONE goal to work on and that is me. That is a big enough job for now.

Hey Jay!!!!!! Where did you go???? :callme:

I have a goal to lose 10 pounds by the end of June and it is coming along slowly. I will get as close as I can. That would mean being at 220. It has been ages since I have been there. :crossed:

Hope your weather picks up Laurie. I love to sit around a fire outside. What a nice place to be....

Talk to you tomorrow.....Jude :bike:

Hi, everyone!

I'm still here, Jude! Glad to hear that you passed up those "treats" you didn't really want. Nothing makes me madder at myself than eating something fattening that I really don't even enjoy.

I don't work in an office, but there are foods in the house I could get into trouble with if I chose to. Fortunately they are not the only choices--and that's an important strategy!

It's been raining every day here, but that's kind of par for the course. It's rainy this morning, though, and usually it's sunny in the mornings and rains in the afternoon. Makes it kinda gloomy to get up. But I'm happy we have it!

The 545-mile SF to LA Bicycle Ride to end AIDS begins on Sunday, and my friend who is doing it is both excited and nervous! I can only imagine... She's been doing training rides on the weekends for months, but still... it's a long haul in 7 days. Also she's only a year younger than me, and 3 years older than when she did it the first time. She's many pounds lighter now, but still, she knows she's not the swiftest or strongest rider in the huge bunch that are doing it. I really admire her!

flowingair, I hope you stick around! Let us know how you're doing.

Bye for now,

Jude  Girl, that was AWESOME dumping the cake! What a victory! I'm betting that you are well on your way to ONEDERLAND!

Jay - I'm with you - I have a friend that is older than me that bikes several thousand miles each summer. A typical evening for her and her husband (in his 60s) is to bike 50-100 miles for fun. I can think of few things less appealing than spending hours with my backside on a bicycle seat :yikes: I admire anyone that can do that consistently!

Lori - I am hoping that the $500+ cut in student aid doesn't happen, but I think you are wise to prepare for the worst. I am very hopeful that they will figure out a way to give schools the money they need to operate, but Lansing isn't known for pulling out miracles when it comes to the budget. Who knows, with so many people leaving MI right now, there may very well be fewer layoffs than we are expecting.

Busy Saturday here - being gone last weekend means that I didn't get anything done around the house. So, I have two weeks worth of chores to get done. And, two contractors were here to measure the roof. This old house is need of a new roof, badly. And, with the current tax incentive - it makes sense to get it done now.
Not that we really have a choice, anyway

I'm happy to report that the Chicago lbs. have disappeared and my ticker is accurate again :woohoo:

I'm off to finish washing the inside windows. The hail has stopped and the sun is out. I might actually be able to see all the streaks I leave ;)

Enjoy your weekend all!

Hey! CD, good for you in getting those Chicago pounds off again. Gosh, that wasn't bad at all--and it sounds like you had great fun!

Quiet days here. Yesterday I trimmed bushes. It's hot and sunny today, but not too humid. I haven't been out yet.

I'm really bummed out that Susan Boyle came in second on Britain's Got Talent. But, I can't fault Diversity--the dance troupe that won. They were really good. Still, it's not fun to see someone with talent get chewed up by the media the way she was. I hope she goes on to make an album and gets a tidy sum from it. I'll buy it right now.

Later, we're going to a concert of Broadway tunes! That should be very fun. It's the last concert of the current season. The next season starts in the fall, I think.

Enjoy your time!

I wanted to share this post by member MistyRain. Read her post and then my reply and her reply to me, below it. I think she is really on to something about maintenance.

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2762002&postcount=81

The thread is about maintaining by eating everything in moderation.

(I guess the link only takes you to her post--but click the thread name in the upper right of the window and you'll be taken to the rest of the thread.)

Jay - I agree with you about Misty's post. It absolutely represents the "aha" moment for me. I don't agree with most of the chicks around here that are in maintenance, because "all things in moderation" has been my mantra from the start of this journey.

I thoroughly enjoy eating now - I restrict no food. That being said, I make much smarter choices now. I've changed my relationship with food and find that I actually like and CRAVE healthier foods. That being said, I DO eat things that aren't so healthy - just in moderation (Triple Chocolate Cheesecake comes to mind ;)).

I think that is why I was able to dump the Chicago lbs. so quickly. I think they were mostly water weight from the high sodium content of some of the foods (Chicago style pizza on the last night - most likely).

We ate exactly what we wanted on the trip - no guilt, no agonizing - we thouroughly enjoyed every bite. But, there were some ground rules we set at the beginning of this journey that have dramatically changed the way we dine out.
1. We ALWAYS split ONE thing. It can be an appetizer, entree, side or dessert. If we are still hungry, we order more. That almost never happens
2. We take a plastic container with us for leftovers. And, when the food comes - we decide what a portion is and package up the rest. Even when splitting an entree - we often have leftovers. Restaurant portions can be large enough to feed a family of 4 sometimes!
3. We try to stay in places where we have access to a refrigerator and microwave - that way leftovers become breakfast or lunch for another day. Though, in big cities - we often pass them along to one of the colorful folk we meet on the street (panhandlers). If we decide against having them for a second meal, we dump them. It is easier to do than to leave them on the plate (card carrying clean plate members here - with all the usual guilt messages deeply ingrained in both of us)

I hesitate to post much about maintenance around here because I really don't seem to be like some of the others that still plan, plan, plan and restrict, restrict, restrict. But my experience has been like Misty's - I really have a different relationship with food now. I do eat like a thin person. I'm not 100 percent there yet - I still need to control my portions, where a true thin person would be able to just stop when there is lots of food on the plate - but, I'm working on it!

I agree with you on Susan too - one of the reasons that we no longer watch TV is the whole tabloid mentality that permeates every show - even the evening news! I feel badly for her, but I do believe she will profit dramatically from the whole experience. Simon signed her to a contract, and we WILL be seeing an album. And given all of the drama and publicity - it will become an international best seller - not just in Britain.

I'm off to get some gardening done. It is still cool here (55) but the sun is shining. Then, I need to call my mom for our usual Sunday chat. I bought some Numi flowering teas (http://www.amazon.com/Numis-Bouquet-Bamboo-Teapot-Flowering/dp/B000FFIL92/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1243799278&sr=8-1) that I serve in my English tea cup when I chat with her. A funny ritual, but I enjoy it.

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Laurie :scooter:

Hi, I call myself Musicgal and I've been a member of this website for about 9 years or so. It seems I am always struggling with my weight, usually with 10-20 lbs. I'm usually content when I am in the 130's, whether it be 131 or 139 (usually it's 137 and above!). Am trying right now to get in the lower range and possibly the high 120's. I have a small frame and stand around 5'4 1/2. I am in my 50's now :o (going on 52) and still going through occasional hot flashes. Most of my weight seems to be in the belly and below area...except I have to admit my legs from the thighs down are still pretty hot :D! I used to run a lot in my 20's and early 30's but now have knee problems so I don't run much anymore although I do intersperse walking and jogging. From the ages of 23-30, I have competed in 9 marathons, my best time being a modest 4:09. I completed my first mini (sprint distance) triathlon right around the time of my 50th birthday. After I finished having kids (at age 37) I went back to exercise...first running and then I found out I had osteoarthritis so I joined a gym and took various cardio and strength training classes. I also use a home treadmill and elliptical machine and recently discovered yin yoga which I like to do at night to stretch and calm myself.

Nice to meet you and I will be reading all your posts.

CD, I like your rules for the road--or for eating out--they make sense and help avoid some pitfalls.

I agree that some of the maintainers here sound like they are "white knuckling" it, and I can't foresee living life that way myself. I hope I don't have to...

I suppose you've also seen that Susan Boyle is hospitalized with exhaustion now. I feel so bad--I hope that having some rest and TLC will put things right for her. I could tell watching the announcement of the winner that she was in bad shape--she was visibly trembling before they named the winner. I think she had just been run into the ground. It makes me angry!

My food plan has been good--allowing myself to have a decent calorie target and taking loss more slowly seems to be working.

Wow lots of great topics going on. Welcome to Musicgal!!:cheer2:

Thanks for the link Jay to the other site. I can hear what you guys are saying. I acutally feel like that is how I am starting to lose weight. I have started to look at food as just that. More about what is too much rather than what is good or bad.
Laurie I sure like the way you and your DH approach things. Has he had a big weight loss as well? I know if I turned off the TV that I would certainly have some extra time but I watch it when I get home at 930pm and there is not much else happening then. :?:

Lori thanks for the tip about Picassa I will have to go and take a look. I hope you are looking forward to the wedding. I am sure everything else will work out. But really want you to enjoy this time with your daughter. Just a few more weeks. :D

Not much new with me. I scraped and painted my fence on Saturday. The weather has been very warm and sunny. So that was great. My fence looks a lot better. Went out for dinner with a friend. Most of my food was OP on the weekend. I am really working on the moderation thing. In the past I would just beat myself up if I had a cookie. So one cookie turned into a feast. Now I just call it a cookie. I am really starting to realize that food is not what I want. Something is missing but food is not it. Life is a journey and it will play out. Trying to put the lion back into the cage so to speak and not let it run my life.

Must renovation year cause I am getting new countertops and tile backsplash in my kitchen. Should be done in about 3 weeks. Will be wonderful. My kitchen has a built in cutting board that was there when I moved in. Have been wanting to get rid of it for years and this is it. Hasn't killed me yet but why risk it.

Cheers ...Jude :cbg:

Jude  LOVED your post!
Yes, DH has lost 60 lbs and is working on another 5 or so. It has been joyous to travel this journey together! One note - it is a LOT easier to split a meal when you are vegetarians. There are usually a limited number of choices on the menu (except when we travel to the big city of course). Thus, it is a LOT easier to decide on what to share when only a few things are even options. Probably why we go a bit overboard when we go to Chicago. It is just so exciting when we can find vegetarian restaurants. It takes us FOREVER to decide on what to order :D

I would LOVE to redo my kitchen. I'm envious! A new roof is not terribly exciting :(

You are definitely on the right track with your eating. It IS a journey, and look at how far you have come :D

Jude, how BEAUTIFUL!!!! :bravo: Great combination of colors--it looks so rich and luxurious!

Gosh, Jude, I thought you already did that fence... did I miss something?

In the past I would just beat myself up if I had a cookie. So one cookie turned into a feast. Now I just call it a cookie.
That's a lot more reasonable!

I am really starting to realize that food is not what I want. Something is missing but food is not it.
That's a good realization. I have often eaten just as a distraction--like, I'll be trying to fix something in a text I'm working on but get stuck, and so I used to wander into the kitchen and start looking around. Sometimes I still do, but then I say, "Nope. No words here." and go back to my desk. Or take a walk, or do some cleaning!

Your kitchen remodel sounds great, although I'm sure it will be a pain until it's completed.

CD, yeah, it's often easier if one is vegetarian because of limited choices. You're not vegan though, right? That's nearly impossible, it seems...

I'm just doing the usual work and daily schedule stuff today. Catch you later!

Hey Jude! That quilt is beautiful. Great colors. It's sure to become a family heirloom.
I lost a pound so I really feel good about that. I've been exercising so my arms look good in my dress. It's helping my weight loss.
I have to drive back to school tonight for a instrumental music concert tonight. Then, I'll watch the Red Wings. I love hockey-go Wings. I need to get going. I'll be back soon. Lori

JudeWOW That is wonderful! Are you going to tie it, or quilt it? It would be fantastic either way!

Jay - yes - ovo-lacto vegetarians here. It DOES make life so much simpler! Though we did eat in two vegan restaurants while in Chicago.

Actually, DH made wonderful omelets for supper tonight. We don't have eggs often, but every once in a while a vegetable omelet just hits the spot!

Lori :congrat: on the lb.! We have found that all the boxing is working well for weight loss for DH! He was stalled for about 8 months, and since starting the cardio boxing, he is losing again :)

A very, very busy day here. I will be glad when school is out  I felt like every email and every phone call and every knock on my door was someone wanting to take a little bite out of me - I didn't have much left at the end of the day!

But, I did manage to get in some yoga and some boxing after I got home. DH made dinner while I worked out - gotta love that kinda spouse :D

It is a beautiful evening here, so I'm off to enjoy the great outdoors for a while!

Happy Tuesday, all! I hope yours was POP.

Thanks guys for all your compliments. Laurie I am going to tie it. I would have to send it out to be quilted and so far the price has been pretty cheap. I am going to make a rag quilt next. I have collected all the materials. It will be flannel inside and on the back and then patchwork on the front. Most of my prints are earth colors and a lot of tiny florals. Here is a picture of what a rag quilt looks like for those who have not seen one.

That is the general idea. It will take me forever but that is ok. It is a great diversion when I have time on my hands and keeps me out of the kitchen.

Yes Jay I have been working on the fence. I did get it all scraped down but had to wait for the hot weather to paint. We have had a week of really hot weather so now it is done. I am trying to water my garden without hitting the fence now. :censored:

Hey Lori congratulations on that pound. :carrot::carrot:
I am slowly going down. It is hard work. I still do not have 100% op but it is getting better. Not really sure what 100% would look like. I just know when I am eating too much. So far today is not too bad.
I did make to the gym yesterday and today so happy about that.
Just plugging along a day at a time. I have a co worker here that has a great positive outlook on life. She is a widow of 20 years and is just a few years younger than me. I like her positive outlook and she works out and has a trainer. A good role model for me. Sometimes there is a shortage of positive role models. That is why this site is so great.

Hope you all have a great evening.......Jude :coffee2:

Jude - Post a picture when you get it tied :)

Hey - progress, not perfection is the goal. You have made some good changes. Just keep building on them. You CAN do this!

I'm a fly-in tonight. The annual Chamber of Commerce dinner is tonight and my boss is being honored, so I gotta go.

It should be a fun evening, and it is one time that I am glad I'm a vegetarian. I am much less likely to overeat :D

Hope you all had a fun day!

flowingair, congratulations on that pound! Now tell its friends to join it somewhere else as well. ;)

Yeah, CD, I can see where being a vegetarian has advantages. On the other hand, I do know some obese ones... :( I think they probably overdo it on carbs...

Jude, really nice rag quilt. I do like those.

Did I tell you folks about our last season concert last Sunday? Gosh, I can't remember. It was all Broadway tunes, with three Broadway stars singing them! A perfectly delightful evening. A little bit of everything, old and new. Some songs from Mame, Chicago, Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, etc.

We got season tickets again, but haven't decided which concerts yet.

I have to go to the dentist in awhile to get the permanent crown installed... Sigh...

See you!
Jay

Jay - count me as one of those obese vegetarians (well until recently, anyway :D) Alas, our youngest is still very, very heavy. And yes - definitely a carb issue!

The concert sounds like it was great! The crown is no big deal - they just pop it on - the easiest part of the whole procedure!

Another quick post tonight. I have a funeral visitation to do tonight for a member of our church (and mother of a good friend). Today was good - the weather has FINALLY warmed up, so I will walk to church tonight. And of course I did shape boxing after work ;)

Gotta fly! Hope you are having a good week!

Laurie

Another hot one here. I am sitting in airconditioning though.

Sounds like your evening out was great Jay. I have yet to get to a concert. Maybe in the fall. And yes putting that crown on is the easiest part. You will be out of there in no time. Should be no freezing.

Thanks for your comment on Rag quilts. I have all the material bought and I keep debating whether a regular quilt or a rag quilt. I am making it for my daughters 30th birthday next winter. She loves things like this. Not sure which and do not want to ask her as it is going to be a surprise. I like the rag quilt and it is easier to do. :coffee:

Where is Musicgal?? Jump right in and let us know how you are doing.
I am staying OP pretty well. Nothing is 100% but certainly have a new outlook on food. FINALLY!!

Funny though I was coming down with a cold last night as I was leaving work and the first thing I thought of was what's to eat!! :(

Jeez no end. I used to eat nothing but junk food if I got sick. Never was put off my food by illness. But I was pretty good. Took some cold meds and went to bed. Well watched part of the Tonight Show with new host Conan Obrien but not much. Had to do some watering when I first got home as it had been very dry. This whole garden thing takes time. All my plants are new so would hate to kill them off the first year!!:D

I am at work. I am having a decaf coffee and a South Beach bar. This was my worst time of day and so this is my new routine. Seems to be working. Gets me through to dinner.

My house was roasting last night and will be tonight too. Should be cooling down a bit for the weekend. I am going tile shopping for my kitchen. My house needs new blinds too. But that will have to wait awhile. Need to work some overtime I think. :?:

Hope everyone is well. CD you amaze me with how busy you are. You have the energy of a 25 year old.

Have a great night,.....Jude:dancer:
