Featherweights - counting calories just is not doing it for me..

...I am miserable. I am going to go back to trying the south beach diet (or version thereof) starting tomorrow. It is really rough for the first few days or so and then it gets really easy and I lose well, I feel full and not starved all the time. I just can't bear it anymore and I am finding myself obsessed by food and starving all the time. I really cannot deal well with most carbs, it seems. Anybody else have the same issue with limiting calories rather than carbs????

I find that I have to limit both to lose weight effectively. I don't actually count my carbs, but I eat in a South Beach type of way - lots of lean proteins, with most of my carbs being fruits & veggies. I find that processed carbs just don't fill me up - I can't be satisfied with a "serving" of spaghetti, for instance. However, I also have to count calories, because it is totally possible for me to greatly overeat on lean proteins and good carbs.

Linniet, are you sure you're eating enough? Su-Bee's advice is good as well--make sure you are choosing foods that fill you up.

At the end of the day, it really is whatever plan works for you and whatever plan you can maintain in the long run. As long as the plan is nutritious, of course. So, if limiting carbs seems easier for you, then go for it. But you might have to eventually learn how to deal with them if you want to maintain your weight loss...

very true

I am a calorie counter And at first I felt starved but I added healthier food in and figured out the clories that worked best for me.~And stopped the junk foods and those that didn't feel me up.
Once I learned what foods to eat It's going smooth for me and I actually feel overly full somedays.Maybe you was eating the wrong foods.
But I agree with Kiramira ~whatever works best for you.
GOODLUCK

I am not a carb counter. I only eat whole grains though. Also, just by the very nature of the foods I focus on--veggies and lean proteins, I am absolutely certain I do not eat as many carbs as I used to. The whole grains I eat have minimal processing and I eat very little bread at all.

I think of "carbs" more as the ones that trigger binges in me... such as artificially sweetened yoghurt, granola bars, cereals etc... I find I do ok on oatmeal for instance. Another thing I wonder about is my intake of skim milk ( at least 4 cups a day ! I am a big ole baby! )... I was surprised to realize how much carbs it has.... thanks to fitday :)

That's a very good description of South Beach - whole grains, veggies and lean proteins. There's no counting of carbs. I do eat less bread on SB than I used to, but I also get in 4 1/2 cups of veggies/day & 1-2 fruits and way more lean protein than I used to eat. I'm rarely starving and don't obsess about food all day. "Simple" carbs are a real trigger food for me also, so I'm better off not touching them.
