Are you ladies counting calories, or what are you doing to keep your pregnancy weight gain so low?

I have had three, and I am all for a healthy pregnancy, but just a word of caution that you shouldn't be purposely trying to keep yourself from gaining weight during pregnancy, unless you started out very obese and are doing so under a doctor's guidance.

Gaining a reasonable amount of weight during pregnancy rather than going hog wild and gaining 80 pounds is a good thing...but purposely trying to not gain weight is another story...

In the first trimester I am not so worried, but those who aren't gaining in their second and third trimesters...well, that sort of sends out red flags to me.

(You have to understand, I was following gestational diabetic eating guidelines per my doctor, and I exercised 5-6 days a week and taught belly dance classes throughout my entire pregnancy-and I STILL gained weight...so I am just worried about your bodies and the babies not lacking nutrition.)

Lately I've just been happy if I'm ABLE to eat and keep things down. This AM I weighed in at 216.5 :o:( But I've had HORRIBLE nausea and vomiting especially this week. I'm really hoping it lets up soon!

Altari
05-14-2009, 12:44 PM
I started at 225 and, at 36 weeks, am 245 (ish).

Aphil, I second your comments. Remember, ladies, we're creating little human beings. Our bodies will naturally work to store up extra fat to fuel breastfeeding.

aphil
05-14-2009, 03:17 PM
I also wanted to add that there is some weight gain during pregnancy that has nothing to do with fat or the weight of the actual baby, that will disappear a few weeks after the birth-your body has extra blood volume during pregnancy, the weight of the amniotic fluid and placenta, the weight of the enlarged uterus (that goes from the size of a lime to a watermelon during gestation), and a pound or two extra in your breasts as well. These things should also be taken into consideration.

MeganBeth
05-14-2009, 06:23 PM
When do you start to worry about weight loss during pregnancy? I'm so worried there's more than one in there but I keep loosing weight. I have an appointment with my midwife on the 26th and so far today I've been (finally) able to eat probably twice as much as I have the rest of the week. I just hope this continues *runs and knocks on all the wood in the house*

Altari
05-15-2009, 12:52 AM
Megan, your midwife can give you a better answer than anyone here. I can say, from my experience, you shouldn't worry about weight loss 1) during the 1st trimester and 2) if it's gradual.

If you're experiencing "unexpected and rapid" weight loss, then you need to move from a midwife to an OB for a diagnosis. But, if you're suffering from "morning" sickness, it's to be expected that you'll lose weight. I lose almost 10 pounds in my first trimester, just because I couldn't keep anything down. I'm losing some what I gained now, in my third, because I can't eat anything without getting the worst heartburn of my life. Focus on eating what you can, when you can.

aphil

MeganBeth-

Your stats show that you are currently 10 weeks along-is there a particular reason why you are worrying about a multiple birth? This is something really that won't be able to be known for sure until the midwife or OB hears multiple heartbeats, or it is confirmed on an ultrasound. Were your levels during your bloodwork high or something making you believe that you might be carrying multiples? Don't worry about something until you know it for certain...no need for unecessary worry.

With my first and third pregnancies I had severe morning sickness for about the first 10 weeks or so, and then it started to subside. If you lose a few pounds during that time, I wouldn't worry too much, but if it is excessive (like over 10 pounds, I would just ask my midwife or OB about it. If you are feeling it start to subside, then you are probably doing fine. My worry happens when at 18, 20, 24 weeks etc. that women aren't gaining any weight...and I worry that a weigh in thread might compel women to gain LESS weight because of the comparison factor. (SHE has only gained 8 pounds at 24 weeks, so I am going to aim to gain only 7...that sort of competitive thought process, when now is not the time for it.)

As far as the nausea, I found that it helped me to eat small snacks throughout the day, rather than large meals. When your blood sugar drops, you are more likely to get nausea.

Thanks ladies. I'm fairly certain my weightloss is due to the morning sickness, as of this am i had regained a couple pounds. Yesterday and today have been MUCH better and eating smaller meals has really helped. As well as dr. pepper for some reason. I had quit drinking all caffine but the moment i took a few sips of dr.p my stomach instantly settled. go figure:?:

As for the multiple thing. When I was pg with DS they were about 75% sure he had a twin that didn't make it, they found scar tissue on my u/s and sent me to a specialist who was fairly certain there had been twins and what they thought was scar tissue was actually a "double sac". Oh and there are twins on both sides of my family and both sides of DH's. It would totally be just my luck too... I'm not sure I'd mind, but the thought of all that diaper laundry scares me :p

Aphil - I agree and hope noone is trying to loose wieght. I was loosing weight before I got pregnant and have been worried about not gaining enough. So far, I am on track gaining a pound a week in the second trimester and I think posting here has helped. I have been eating a lot so I'm not sure how I haven't gone out of control. I do try to make healthy choices, whole grains, dairy, fruits, low sugar, etc. but I eat as much as I want. I think it is important not to fight the hunger during pregnancy but to eat nutritiously.

I am new to this forum (Pregnancy). This is my third pregnancy. I am worried because I am just going into my 2nd Trimester and have gained over 16 pounds!!!! I am worried about gaining to much weight. I am not overeating or anything like that and I stopped my exercise routine during my first trimester because I was always so tired. I just began walking last week. Should I be worried about gaining too much more weight?

My PPW was 285

As of this week, my weight is 250!! I had a growth check u/s a couple of weeks ago, and he is growing well, even measuring a couple days ahead, and I have another one Tuesday. My weight loss came from horrible morning sickness in the 1st trimester (hospitalized for IV rehydration), and then was put on bedrest at 18 weeks, so really lost my appetite after that. My OB and my perinatologist have just told me that as long as Toby is growing well, they won't stress me about it, but that they would like to see me gain at my next weight check. I think that being on hospital bedrest is going to make me gain weight, as they are always pushing food at me, and I am getting a bit depressed being away for DH!!

Hugs,
Donna

I was at the high end of "normal" for weight/bmi for my height but am already worried that I am gaining too much :( I wanted to gain 10 lbs at 20 weeks and I have already gained 16 lbs at 18 weeks....uggg. I started exercising again (moderately - 30 min. walking, 4-5 times a week) and am trying to make healthy choices but I must be eating too many calories. I didn't want to count calories during my pregnancy but I think I might have to.

It's been a lot of up and down...I really don't know how I haven't gained a ton, I feel like i'm eating nonstop and making some not so healthy choices sometimes (though I do crave salads so I'll eat an entire bag of salad in 2 sittings) BUT I'm also happy it isn't the almost 80lbs I gained with DS1 at the same time!

Salad cravings are good. I couldn't eat salads for a long time after my morning sickness was gone, it's good that you're getting those veggies in!

My home scale has me at 254 today. I gained about 10lbs on that round of prednisone and didn't get a chance to lose it before baby made it's home! Oh well. For today I'll call it my starting point. I'll alter it when I go to the dr since their scale is always different and I use their number (especially later when I quit weighing daily.)

touchmytoes: I've been pretty sick, whick keeps the weight down at the beginning, and I still had another 20 lbs to lose before I became pregnant, so if you are already overweight I think that it is easier to gain less. At the start of this pregnancy I gained 3 lbs, but then lost it due to "morning sickness" which actually lasts all day.

I am looking to maintain around this weight for most of the pregnancy (which means trying to lose about a pound a week, to counteract the baby gain) and so far it is going very well :)

You do look great and I so understand what you're saying. By now I would've gained 40 lbs by going out to eat practically everyday. Its been so hard to eat at home but so rewarding as well. The calories aren't as outages at it would've been eating at some fast food joint. But I will give in once a week. It is very hard. Good for you on keeping it all under control! You look great. :)

I'm dreading my next weigh in on the 26th. :( We've been eating out a lot, and not the healthy-ish kind of eating out. Fast food, french fries, all kinds of wonderful, nasty stuff. I've also been eating copious amounts of froot loops. It's the only thing that consistently sounds good to me that I don't have to spend a long time cooking. I'm not sick anymore, but nothing is terribly appealing to me except froot loops and taco bell. Those two a healthy pregnancy diet does NOT make.

mom4life
04-16-2010, 11:50 AM
Since I'm already at 25 lbs, dh decided we should start our Taco Bell diet again. Pretty much because we can't really count our calories with dinner, we end up going overboard. So at least with the Taco Bell diet, we can eat what we normally do during the day which is easy to count then have TB for dinner. I'm ordering off the Fresco menu which I love. So far I've been doing good with my calories.

I'm so bloated I feel like I need to pop my belly like a balloon. :dizzy:

So far I've lost 3lbs and gained 4lbs...fast. I need to be more careful. I'm going to be out of town for the next week and have no idea what I am going to eat. I won't have a car except late in the evening, there isn't really anything around my hotel. I am taking a small cooler and some protein bars (usually I won't eat those but I'm desperate). The hotel has two restaurants but they aren't cheap AND I'm sure I'd gain weight eating their food. Oh well. It's just a week. I'll figure it out.

I thought I gained a bunch while on our trip but thankfully I didn't. We have to leave again for two weeks but I'm hoping his usual hotel is available this time. It has a small kitchen, dishes, dishwasher, etc so I can cook for myself. Right now I'm where I started. Oh and I can wear my pants again so some of my bloat has been going down a bit.

Hey ladies! I'm joining y'all. :)

I am 16 weeks today. My pre-pregnancy weight was 228, today I weighed in at 229.5. It has fluctuated a couple of pounds here and there, but my weight has stayed between 229 and 232 these past few weeks. I am hoping to keep my gaining to a minimum.

My nurse told me that she doesn't want to see me get to 250, so I am hoping I can keep my total weight gain under 20 pounds.

 I'm sorry. I went through the same thing a couple weeks ago where I was super careful tracking all my calories on a program. I went to my midwife appt and it said I gained 7 lbs.
I've been tracking my weight on the Wii Fit. I wasn't planning on weigh in till the following week but I was so depressed that I weighed in the next morning on the Wii. Turned out I only gained 2 lbs so her scale is off by 5 lbs. I'm sure it has to be same for you.

My weight has felt like it is ballooning the past few weeks, but I haven't been eating very strictly either, so I can't tell what is baby (at 25 weeks pregnant now) and what is me. I've not been moving much due to pain and fatigue, so that isn't helping.

I am up about 8-9 pounds from my prepregnancy low and about 5-6 pounds from when the doctor weighed me (I was bloated). Either way, here's to not gaining much more!

I'm at 15 weeks today, and so far I've gained about 1 lb. Is that normal? I didn't get morning sickness during the first trimester, and I kept up with healthy eating and my prenatals. I'm just curious if a 1 lb weight gain is standard for 15 weeks.

Guam, you're doing fine. There really is no "normal" for pregnancy weight gain. There are charts and suggestions, but just listen to your Dr., they will let you know if there's a problem. :) Congrats on your pregnancy, I don't think I've seen you on here before!

Thanks for the reply Gale! I'm a little nervous, to be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing! Everyone here has more than one child, and I also have a 9 year old, but WOW, times have changed and I was a lot younger back then so it feels like my first pregnancy. We've had a few minor complications this time around but all is well now (we hope).

Ugh! I should have come by sooner. I started out around 210 lbs and weigh 240 this morning. My goal is not to gain anymore weight the rest of the pregnancy. My doctor said it would have been fine for me not to gain any weight and that I should strive for a gain of 15 lbs. I haven't paid attention and have been eating too much.

Everytime I am hungry I keep thinking that the baby is hungry too and that I should eat something. I don't have a problem with gestational diabetes, but I crave sugar like an addict. Doc says eat 75 grams of protein 200 grams of carbs a day. That is hard to do esp getting 75 grams of protein in.

Anyone else struggling with this? The ladies that have all written seem to be doing fabulous. I need to get control of myself.

I only gained 1 lb this month, I'm pretty happy about that. My latest ultrasound estimated that baby has gained nearly 2.5 lbs in the last 4 weeks. My Dr suggested I cut out most refined sugars and carbs and that has done wonders for my weight gain. Turns out my Dr knows what she's talking about! ;)

Kelligirl, the sugar is what kills my weight gain when I'm pregnant. If I stay away from it for the most part I gain reasonably. If not, I gain lots and I gain fast. That's me. It's hard to stay away from, but eating more fruit has helped a lot... this is the time of year for yummy fresh fruit!

My weight has been all over the place the past month, mainly due to running the snacks at my church's VBS (lots of food on the go and standing for hours, I had the worst water retention!). I also realized I tend to gain a few pounds in a day or two, along with a big fundal height jump, and then it stays the same for a month or so, before leaping up again. Overall though, I am way under the recommended gain, so I am thrilled :)

@ LabMonkey - I'm 99% positive GuamVixen was not purposely trying not to gain any weight. I would be very surprised if she were. That's just the way it worked out for her. She was eating healthily and that's how it happened. It's not usual, but it's not terribly uncommon for someone to only gain a few lbs during pregnancy. I have a friend who lost 25 lbs because she was so sick, it just happens.

Guam had her baby and she is beautiful and healthy! :)

Good--that makes me feel better! Yay, I am glad everything was OK with her baby!

I should be back shortly to this forum - I'm due Jan 10th! :)

I'm at about 150 right now. :) Not exactly 120 anymore, hehe.

At my first Dr's visit, the NP told me that I should limit my weight gain to 10 pounds and it would even be ok if I didn't gain any weight at all. So, I know the no weight gain at all is never going to happen, so I'll try to limit my weight gain.

Hi! Can I jump in with you guys? I just found out I am pregnant a few days ago. So far I've just been losing because I have no appetite at all.

I gained 65 lbs with DD so I'm really, really hoping that that doesn't happen this time around especially since I started 28lbs heavier (although now it's just 24lbs but still...).

I wonīt be able to post for a little while because weīre visiting the in-laws and they donīt have scale. I was checking my pregnancy stats and I gained 10lbs in the first 11 weeks 4 days. So far Iīve just lost but I keep thinking the trend will stop and Iīll wake up the next morning 10lbs heavier. Then again this time Iīm focusing on eating healthy (not limiting food, just making good choices) where last time I KNOW I ate way too much chocolate!!

We finally got a scale today so I weighed in this afternoon just to make sure I hadn't gained. DH had thought I gained 10lbs this week!!!!!:( It turns out that I haven't gained anything but my belly just feels like sticking out more for some reason. :p It's been really hard, though, because morning sickness has hit me hard and I have to snack all the time (and many times I don't have healthy options since we're staying with the in-laws and we don't always have time to go to the store after we get home from work).

Welcome Deltawifey, congrats! I'm also trying not to gain as much as my previous pregnancy. With DD I gained 65lbs and I'm really, really trying to avoid that! ;) Especially since I'm starting 25lbs heavier. I actually looked at my pregnancy last time around and I was 20 weeks along when I was at my current weight. :dizzy:

I have a feeling this is the last of my weight loss this pregnancy (the two pound loss this week actually happened right after I weighed in last week but today is my official weigh-in day). My appetite has come back BIG TIME! I'm just sooo hungry all the time now. I kind of remember last time around too that at 8 weeks my symptoms went more from 1st trimester to 2nd trimester. As in I had less nausea/fatigue/sore breasts but instead I was hungrier and started having round ligament pain (ugh, why, oh why do I get it so early???). Crazy dreams seem to be a constant, though, and cravings are coming on strong!

It went great, she's attened lots of births, and has experience with different complications. She talked to me about the Brewers diet (which I'm already doing), and she thinks natural childbirth will be easy for me since I had pitocin with my last natural birth. Pitocin supposedly makes contractions stronger and most people get the epidural, so she was shocked that I did it without meds. I'm very excited and it sucks that my husband might not be here for the birth since he will be deployed but I still want to have a home birth even if he's not here.

My 1st appt will be on the 16th of March so I still have a ways to go :)

Hi ladies! :) I'm going to join in here.

I haven't had much of an appetite the past few weeks... I can only eat a little bit at a time, and I'm trying to make everything I eat count, lots of meat, veggies, fruit... drinking a lot, lot, lot of milk. Also taking a prenatal vitamin as well as fish oil.

We're going to use a midwife as well.

I think that's where I'm at. I'm not weighing on a digital scale and it's in kilos so there's some guess work that goes into it. However, it's right between 77/78 kilos and sort of bounces back and forth between the two so I'll say 193 lbs.

I'm surprised I lost some more even... I really thought this was slowing down.

Oh, and we're going the midwife route too. I get to meet her next month sometime, I can't wait! It's hard, though, because that means I have to wait so long to hear the heartbeat for the first time (we're waiting for our insurance to kick in). I'm also planning on getting a doula this time too. :D

So today is my weigh-in day but I'm not going to actually count the weight for today until probably Monday or Tuesday since I just had a flight yesterday (I tend to retain a lot of water after flights, sometimes up to 4-5 pounds worth!) and I'm pretty constipated this week so my weight's kind of off. Add to that that the scale gave me three different weights this morning (and not in any progressingly increasing or decreasing matter :?:) so I'm somewhere between 1-3lbs heavier than I was last week. We'll see on Monday or so if that's a true gain or not. I have to fly again next week so I'll probably do the same delayed weight check-in then too...

Prepreg weight:224.6
4 weeks-224.2
5 weeks-227.6 (boobs are fuller, no appetite increase, tummy bloat, still eating healthy)
6 weeks-226.2 (didn't change anything)
7 weeks-227.4
8 weeks-225.6 (can't eat or else I'm in pain)

Well Friday shortly after waking up I was in excruciating pain near my left ovary, I thought the worse which was a ectopic pregnancy. I haven't had a ultrasound up to the point and I had all the symptoms. Scheduled a same day appt and wasn't in pain so he dismissed it as gas. When I returned home the pain came back I couldn't sit still, crying, moaning, etc. I went to the ER, was in lots of pain while waiting.

Finally they get me a room and I took a huge bowel movement and felt fine shortly after. They did the ultrasound i wasn't able to see anything (that's the policy). When the internal probe went to my left side I was very uncomfortable, well come to find out I have a huge ovarian cyst 7cm!. I was happy to finally have it confirmed that this pain was not just in my head. My pain didn't come back until after I left to head back home but I did feel it slowly building while I was their but the doc assumed that it was my bowels causing me problems.

So I was sent home without any meds and they told me to return to the OB on Tuesday since Monday is a holiday. Saturday morning the pain meds (tylenol extra strength) did not work at all, I took my 2 kids to the ER with me. The pain went away again, maybe the meds were finally kicking in or it was the fact that I couldn't eat. If I eat my ovary starts to throb, so I didn't eat until 5pm. They prescribed me tylenol codeine and this is working for the pain but I hate pills, hospitals, etc.

I'm trying to type all this before the meds start to kick in fully but I'm just so exhausted. My husband is in another state right now (Army), and he wont be home till the end of the week. I'm not sure what the OB will want to do but I'm pretty certain they will have to do surgery to remove it while I'm pregnant. I can't imagine being in this much pain during the whole 9 months and I definitely dont want to live on pills my whole pregnancy.

Eating causes so much pain in my left ovary and once my bowels start to move it hurts so bad. My bowels are nice and soft. I'm just miserable and I'm praying something can be done, also the baby isn't ectopic thank god, and the heart rate was 156 bpm. Also the surgery has been performed on lots of pregnant women and they have went on to carry the baby full term. Just needed to vent, Thanks

It looks like I did actually gain a pound during my trip. I'm not too thrilled about it because it definitely wasn't baby weight but rather pizza and steak weight since we ate out for 3 days straight. :( I have another trip coming up on Tuesday so hopefully I have access to better food this time around! DH actually looked at me this morning and then said "You've gotten fatter" I was just gee thanks... :dz:

 Deltawifey. I'm glad you figured out what was going on there. I had a large cyst about that size and had to get it removed (along with the ovary). It was no fun but I felt a lot better afterwards (and was able to lose weight more quickly, the cyst seemed to really be holding back my weight loss). It wasn't during a pregnancy, though, so I'm not sure how that goes. Good luck!

Thanks so much. I can't believe he said that to you.

The thing that irritates me the most is that no one believes that I'm in lots of pain because I'm not screaming and crying. Since I gave birth without meds to my 2nd child I have different ways to cope with pain, and I much prefer to stay calm by using meditation, positive self talk, hypnosis, and movement. They just keep dismissing how horrible I am feeling and saying it could be gas or my bowels which isnt true.

When I'm home I let loose cry, moan, scream, etc when I'm in pain but when I'm surrounded by lots of people I tend to deal with the pain internally and not wanting to make a huge scene. I just hope when I talk to the OB tomorrow that they don't dismiss the pain that I am in. I'm taking pain pills around the clock every 4-6 hours, I can't eat at all without taking the pain pill. The pills also make me very sleepy, so I take half a pill so that I can function without falling to sleep. It sucks so bad and I'm scared about the long term impact these pills can have on the baby, I'm also scared about losing the pregnancy by having surgery.

It's gonna be a hard decision to make but I can't imagine having to take pain pills for the whole pregnancy, I have 2 kids to take care of and my husband will be deploying in 3 months for a year. I just need lots of prayers for me and the baby and I will definitely keep you ladies updated on what is going to happen.

Good luck! I remember for me too it was rather painful. It also caused lots of other nastiness (like constipation) so it wasn't fun at all. I did find that a hot water bottle helped A LOT as did a warm bath. During this time I really focused on diet. Eating red meat, caffeine, cheese, etc can aggravate a cyst. I became vegetarian for awhile and it helped significantly (and thankfully I've never had a cyst on the other side!!!).
