Can you lose 5% of your body weight in 5 weeks? That's the challenge I'm putting forth for myself and thought there might be some folks here who would like to join and challenge themselves as well!
To find what 5% of your body weight is simply multiply your weight by .05
I weigh 198, 5% for me is 9.9 pounds (which I'm simply going to call 10) so it averages out to 2 pounds per week. It's ambitious but certainly doable (and if it were easy it wouldn't be called a challenge! lol).
So anyone else want to try for it? You can report in here every day along the way or once a week or just check in at the end, it doesn't really matter as long as you make the commitment to yourself to DO IT! And you can certainly jump in any time.

That's 9 pounds for me, which would take me to 176.5. That'd be pretty rowdy since it's getting very close to what I had envisioned at one time as my ultimate goal weight.
(I've not set a goal weight, and I'm keeping it that way for now.)

I think that attaching a 5 week limit is a bad idea. For some people, it would not be physically possible to lose that much weight in that time. Even if it's technically possible, having deadlines for weight goals is often discouraging rather than encouraging. If you reach the end of the 5 weeks and have lost 4% instead of 5%, will you be happy or unhappy? Most people will see the negative -- "I failed" -- rather than the positive.

I've discovered that for myself if I don't lose that specific amount by the "time limit" I'm ok with it, honestly any loss is a success to me. I've set many, many goals and some of them I didn't make it and others I went above and beyond. But it gives me something to work for. If I say I'm going to try lose 5% of my weight "sometime this year" it'll never happen and THEN I'll feel like a failure!
I think we as people know ourselves pretty well (even if we don't like to admit what we know sometimes) so if you know a time limit isn't a good idea for you then that's fine, you can just work on the 5% and whatever pace it comes off is the pace it comes off.
I know I can lose 5% of my body weight, I just wanted to make it a challenge to do so!
An just to update - I'm down 1 pound, 9 to go! :woohoo:

WOW! I think I am going to start calling the 5% Challenge the 5% FIGHT CLUB! We are knocking pounds of fat out of our lives left and right ... or is that left and right hook? I know that lots of people aren't posting every week, but from the results of the people who are posting, I can tell you that we are knocking the stuffing out of those pounds of fat! Take a look:
KA-POW! DevsMama has scored a TKO, dropping 5.8 pounds right in their nasty little tracks! Don't let her sweet name deceive you --- this lady is a CONTENDER! http://www.smileyslord.com/smileys/boxing-smiley-001.gif
And the pounds of fat had better mind their manners if they end up in the ring with Ailidh! She has blasted 3.4 pounds right over the ropes --- and she hasn't even posted her scores for this week's fights yet! http://www.clipartof.com/images/thumbnail/784.gif
A left jab, a left jab and then BOOM! that deadly SparkleMajik right cross has caught 2 slow-moving pounds of fat completely off their guard. That makes 2 more pounds of fat carried from the ring on stretchers! http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/edoom/boxing_smiley.gif
Who floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee? 100+'s very own BareFootNikki! She has already bested 9 pounds of fat in this challenge and is well on her way to being a NoLongerHeavyWeight champion!http://www.getsmileyface.com/sm/violent/sterb173.gif
But if ye have to be namin' just one lad or lassie as a top-notch, rough and ready brawler, you need look no further than herself, IrishSarah. Her bare knuckle attacks have left 6 pounds reelin' and retchin' --- and she hasn't even posted her wins for this week yet!http://smileys.smilchat.net/smileys/sport/boxeur1.gif
SunFlowerGirl has been busy as well. Her intricate footwork and cunning feints have left 2 pounds of fat kissing the canvas in the ring and who knows how many more on the ropes, just waiting to be finished off!http://home.tiscali.nl/wildwizard/smileys1/punch.gif
Another 2.2 pounds of fat have fallen to the deadly infighting and uppercuts of one MrsWolf. When it comes to down and dirty, this gal is a sure bet --- and she hasn't even posted the results of this week's bouts! http://www.smileyslord.com/smileys/boxing-smiley-001.gif
It looks like SaraMommy has mastered the perfectly delivered body blow and with it, she has defeated 2 ungainly pounds of fat --- and that is without knowing how she did in her fights for this week!http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/edoom/boxing_smiley.gif
Rounding out the Fight Club's Premier Team is Knock-em Dead Nash: he has gone toe to toe with 8 slimy pounds of fat, evaded their cheating, below the belt techniques and left 8 pounds of fat slammed to the canvas! Smack down!http://www.clipartof.com/images/thumbnail/784.gif
Excellent work, everyone! Now, grab your towels and head on back to your corners to rest up for another round of fast, 5-fingered fists of fury. 3FC sent over a training video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qit3ALTelOo&feature=related, perfect to watch as you down another round of water and plan another PoundOfFat KO.

My weight was tricky this week. I weigh daily and went up for 2 days straight then started dropping again. Only 2.6 to go for my goal. Oh, that's next week!
Good luck everyone!
You are shorting yourself a whole WEEK on this challenge! (I think, anyway.) You started on 4/4 --- but you shouldn't count that day as the end of a week! I am pretty sure you should be ending this challenge on 5/9, which gives you TWO weeks to lose just over TWO pounds! Now, maybe you decided to end on May 2 to better match the opening post or something. Either way, it sure looks to me like you are going to EXPLODE your goal!

ROFLMAO! It is official, I love you Numina!
I am flabbergasted. I am only 1-2 pounds from my 5% goal with time to spare! WTH!?! That is so not like me. (I think I'll ask for a scale for my birthday so I can have more exact numbers.)
Yesterday, I put on a pair of jeans (real jeans without any stretch to them at all) that I haven't worn since way before baby #3. They were a size 20. I could even button and zipper them up. I wore them for half the day, even though it was 86º outside! LOL!
My mom said something that both excited, and scared the **** outta me. I am now only 1 size away from being in the teens! Size 18 is looming on the horizon, just over the next hill!! OMG! Do you know what that means?! That means that I could possibly buy clothing in the regular ol' section of the store! :fr: I am trying not to get too excited because for one, I just got into the size 20's and secondly, I know how wildly different clothing makers vary their sizes. I'd hate to walk into a store and try on a pair of pants only to be devistated by what is on the tag.
:o Sorry. I just sorta had this size revelation and it was on my mind. I knew my clothes were getting bigger but I never really thought about smaller sizes. It was just a "lightbulb" kind of moment.

WOW! It looks like another bruising week for all those nasty pounds of fat out there as the Five-Fingered Fists of Fury Fight Club took to the road. There were exterminations on the east coast, smackdown in the south, massacres in the Midwest, whallopings in the west and even some ruckus in the Rockies! Members of the 100+ Fight Club even hit the international circuit and annihilated some overseas pounds of fat.
In a series of lightning moves and rapid-fire body punches, SprkleMajik took on 2.5 PoundsOFat in a South Carolina arena and walked away the winner! The losers looked plenty dazed and confused when they were carried away on that stretcher! GREAT FIGHTING FORM, SPRKLEMAJIK!
The crowd went wild under that hot California sun when SunflowerGirl KO'ed 4 hulking pounds of fat and left them face-up on the canvas. Many folks commented on the fiesty gal's sunny smile as she stepped over her now-prostrate opponents. And why shouldn't she smile? NICE FIGHTING,THERE, SUNFLOWERGIRL!
They take their boxing very seriously in Canada and that was patently obvious in Ontario when MrsWolf battered 3.4 pounds of fat onto their knees and out of her life forever. A few people raised questions about the pugnacious pugilist’s final spinning kick to the head, but as the contender herself stated: "All's fair in love in war, and babies, this is definitely not LOVE!" KEEP KNOCKING THEM BACK, MRSWOLF!
And you can excuse that one Ohio newspaper for wondering if Morrigan, the Celtic goddess of war, had returned to Earth when you read the account of the last brawl IrishSarah dominated there. 11 --- that's right, folks! ELEVEN! --- different opponents tried to take our gal down, but herself pummeled all comers and walked away undefeated! YESSSSS! YOU ARE ON FIRE, IRISHSARAH, AND NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP YOU NOW!
Word of some serious match fights sounded out across the pond from the UK as 100+’s own No-Longer-Heavyweight Champion Ailidh rocked and socked 8.5 pounds of fat right out of existence. Fight fans there have come to love our gal’s uncompromising style and signature right cross that has been the death blow for so many fat pounds. KEEP THOSE KNOCK-OUTS COMING, AILIDH!
Before there is the run for the roses in Kentucky this year, there was the flight to the stars, a trip made by 8 unwholesome pounds of fat thanks to that hard-hitting contender, DevsMama. Each pound of fat was sent into orbit by the deadly high-low combination punches of the unflinching DevMama and then left to lie on the canvas, stars circling their heads just like a Loony Tune cartoon. YOU ARE HAVING THE LAST LAUGH NOW, DEVMAMA! SEND SOME MORE OF THOSE NASTY POUNDS ON AN OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD, ONE-WAY VACATION!
There were reports of a hurricane down Bermuda way, but it turned out to be nothing more (and nothing less) than the rapid-fire, fat-destroying punches of BareFootNikki. This lovely island member of the 100+ Five-Fingered Fists of Fury Fight Club has already exterminated 11.2 nasty pounds of fat opponents and is eager to unleash her fury on more. EXCELLENT FIGHTING STYLE THERE, BAREFOOTNIKKI --- NOTHING IS GOING TO KEEP YOU FROM MAKING YOUR GOAL IN THIS CHALLENGE!
We also heard about some dirty dealing in New Jersey, where pounds of fat were sneaking into the ring with horseshoes in their gloves. 100+’s Fox took some serious battering, but ultimately the feisty fighter picked herself up and blasted 2 of those cheating pounds out of the ring and out of the world of fighting forever! GREAT RECOVERY, FOX! YOU ARE BACK AND READY TO DESTROY YOUR OPPONENTS!
Finally, our ace reporters in the field are hearing lots of rumors about two new members of the 100+ Five-Fingered Fists of Fury Fight Club: Ac95Sqr and TeaHoney. Both of these bruisers come to the club with reputations for dealing severely with any pounds of fat opponents. In fact, there have been whispers of baseball bats, brass knuckles and expertly applied stiletto heels. Better keep your eyes on these two!
ANOTHER GREAT WEEK, FIGHT CLUB! KEEP THOSE FISTS UP AND THE FAT FLYING AND WE WILL ALL BE 5% LESS ENCUMBERED BY THOSE NASTY POUNDS OF FAT!
Well done Numina! I'm ready to knock that scale out tomorrow!

Well... i was thinking this mornign when i weighed in that i was a smidge over my goal but i was really please anyway... now i see i have ONE MORE WEEK to knock it out of the ring! I've had 2 solid weeks of going up a couple pounds in the beginning and then losing those couple PLUS some. I am being extra sure to drink my water ALL week this week to keep things going. Also going to start calorie cycling.
Can't wait to see everyone's weigh-ins and i hope they rock!
I am going to have to work my but off this week If I am going to reach this. I am a bit disappointed - I have been on a hiking trip for the last week, I monitored my calories correctly - even weighing them against the aprox. calories I was burning hiking. while going the right direction on the scale still makes me happy -I am a bit surprised.

I wondered where you were, Nash --- I just figured you had been abducted by aliens like all the rest.....
http://planetsmilies.net/alien-smiley-126.gif
Personally, I don't always see a strong correlation between what I do during a week and what my scale says at the end of the week --- usually, yes, but about 25% of the time it just seems utterly random. The only really consistent thing with me is drinking water: when I drink a lot, I lose and when I don't drink it, I don't lose.
Anyway, my guess is you will see a big loss in the coming week, maybe even big enough to hit that goal! Hope you had fun hiking --- sounds like a great way to spend a week. What kind of adventures did you have? See any animals?
I didn't have a great week and the scale proved that. I have one more day to kick a pound off to hit goal. Since I know what I did wrong, I will do everything right today, cross my fingers, drink a ton of water and get my new plan figured out, written down and in motion. I don't want any more bad weeks.

I went to the gym (first time in too long) drank a lot of water, ate better but I didnt' make it by one pound. I should n't be disapointed though. After I let things slide for over a week, getting back on track yesterday was a good thing. Still, to be so close....

Welllll this stinks. I am up. BUT, i know why! I just got my GoWear Fit and it seems my metabolism is pretty dang slow. With a good, fast, long walk and a day busy with babysitting and house cleaning i burned 2500 calories.. whew, that's not much. So, i'm cutting my intake to 1500 so i will actually lose some weight.
The GREAT news is --- i am not mad or giving up. I feel every bit as confident as can be and i'll keep on keepin' on :D
I dunno what it is, but whenever I get right to the border of a new decade, my weight goes up and down over the same 2 pounds. I have been down to 230 and up to 232 all week. I don't think I will be hitting my goal (228) tomorrow, but couldn't I just slip under that blasted 230 mark??? AAARGH!
LOL

I'm in shock - looks like you were right Numina, I stepped on the scale this morning expecting to have not quite reached the 5% and ended up with my biggest 1 week weight loss since my first week.
April 12 304 - 1.29%
April 19 300 - 1.31%
April 27 N/A (out of town)
May 3 - 298 - 0.66%
May 10 - 289 - 3%
Total - 6%
I think like you said though water may have been the difference i probably drank half as much as normal while on vacation
It was quite nice - we came across two moose who were talking to each other - it was pretty cool.

WOW! It looks like another bruising week for all those nasty pounds of fat out there as the Five-Fingered Fists of Fury Fight Club took to the road. There were exterminations on the East Coast, smackdowns in the South, massacres in the Midwest, wallopings in the West and some ruckus in the Rockies! Members of the 100+ Fight Club even hit the international circuit and annihilated some overseas pounds of fat.
I am really pretty impressed by the numbers you people are flinging around as pounds of fat that you defeated! I know it’s a pain not to hit that goal (from personal experience I know this!), but to lose double digits and only miss by one pound is pretty freaking cool in my book! So, some shout-outs to folks who have finished their 5 weeks:
They take their boxing very seriously in Canada and that was patently obvious in Ontario when MrsWolf battered 8.2 pounds of fat onto their knees and out of her life forever. A few people raised questions about the pugnacious pugilist’s final spinning axe kick to the head, but as the contender herself stated: "All's fair in love in war, and babies, this is definitely NOT love!" That kind of attitude freed the contentious Canuk of a full 5% of her weight ---- CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING YOUR GOAL, GIRLIE! YOU ARE A HECK OF A CONTENDER! (PS --- I love your avatar photo --- you are so darn cute in that snap on the right!)
In a series of lightning moves and rapid-fire body punches, Ailidh took on 10 --- that’s right, 10! --- PoundsOFat in a UK arena and walked away the winner! There were body blows that blasted her opponents clear out of the ring! There were hooks that made that pirate from Peter Pan look positively precious! And in the end, there was just one gal standing as the losers were carried away by stretcher --- and that gal won the right to wave bye-bye to 5% of her unwelcome visitors. CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING YOUR GOAL, TOO, AILIDH! YOU ARE GOING TO WOW THEM IN SPAIN!
The crowd went wild under that hot Bermuda sun when BareFootNikki KO'ed 11.8 hulking pounds of fat and left them face-up on the canvas. Many folks commented on the fiesty gal's sunny smile as she stepped over her now-prostrate opponents. How could such a sweet-looking lady hide such a powerful, unstoppable fighting spirit? But why shouldn't she smile? She just destroyed nearly 12 pounds of fat that will never, ever dare darken her door again. EXCELLENT FIGHTING, NIKKI! YOU SHOWED THEM WHAT FOR UNTIL THEY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!
And you can excuse that one Ohio newspaper for wondering if Morrigan, the Celtic goddess of war, had returned to Earth when you read the account of the brawl IrishSarah dominated there. Eleven --- that's right, folks! ELEVEN! --- different opponents tried to take our gal down, but herself pummeled all comers and walked away undefeated! Her knuckles were bruised and bloody, but her victory strut was smooth, sexy and full of sass. FANTASTIC JOB, SARAH! MAYBE THE FIGHTING IRISH OF NOTRE DAME SHOULD GIVE YOU SPOT ON THEIR TEAM!
Wait! HOLD THE PRESSES! Word has just emerged from the shadows of the seamier side of Ontario (what IS it about that town and fighting?) of a bare knuckle, no rules, last one standing fist fest that went on in the wee hours after midnight. Once the bodies had been cleared and the teeth, broken bones, and feathers removed from the ring, the last man standing was our very own Nash! This hero took on all comers and ended up annihilating 19 nasty, ugly pounds of fat! 19 POUNDS! 5 WEEKS! WOW! And one of his opponents was a MOOSE! I am betting that next year, this hardcore hitter will take on a grizzley bear! Or a polar bear! Or a tax collector! CONGRATULATIONS ON STUPENDOUS, NAIL-BITING FINISH, NASH AND HITTING YOUR GOAL SO HARD IT RANG LIKE THE LIBERTY BELL! (And thanks for the cool moose picture, too --- I don’t get to see moose too often because they live on the other side of the divide from me.)
I know there are other fights still in progress and some results that won't be in for a few more weeks. The folks from above are passing the Five-Fingered Fists of Fury Fight Club torch on you folks that are still duking it out with your enemy fat -- but we will be here to cheer you guys on to victory. So, go to your corners and then
COME OUT FIGHTING!

Well, you SHOULD feel proud of all the work you are doing and the great results you are getting, Nikki! Everyone on this thread should be proud of what they are doing --- yeah, yeah, most of us aren't perfectly doing what we think we should, but everyone is HERE and is TRYING and is LOSING!
So, darn it,
HOORAY FOR ALL OF US!

Go for it, MisUnderstood! 5% of your weight in 5 weeks turns out to be a very solid challenge. Good luck and we will be watching from the sidelines to cheer your progress.
(If you need a really terrific pair of combination hiking/fat-stomping boots, maybe Nash will let you borrow his! LOL)
