100 lb. Club - April NSV's
Sandi

Welcome to one of the most popular threads here at the 100lb club!
For those of you unfamiliar with the term, NSV stands for Non Scale Victory. This is where we share our progress on matters that don't necessarily relate to the actual number on the scale. Such as making a healthier choice, resisting temptation, receiving a compliment (we're big on those), fitting into clothing better, something in the fitness area and so on and so on. So let's start filling it up!

My non scale victory was the look of admiration in my husbands eyes this weekend when he told me how great I looked and how wonderful I am doing! I actually felt sexy for the first time in a long time!

I know I have 20 minutes until it's April but I HAD to post this NSV because I couldn't believe I did it.
Well, if anyone is like me I let a man get to me. I was so upset tonight that I couldn't stop thinking about it. I was at the store buying a few things and like old habit I went right to the ice creamy goodness. That brought up a red flag. Why am I doing this to myself? :?: I have done very well. So I decided to walk around the store and think. Then I said to myself "You will NOT let him and your emotions determine your success. I am letting him make me feel this way."
So, instead of all the bad fat and calories I ended up walking out of the store with some almonds and a vitamin water.
:woohoo:

I'm so proud of myself today - A coworker brought in "fruit pizza" today (Don't be fooled by the name. It's 3 little slices of fruit on a sugar cookie crust with whipped cream and frosting for the 'sauce') and I entirely avoided it. A parent also brought us donuts today. I've avoided that too :D Not easy when everyone's munching around me but I kept telling myself "It's just not worth it."

I've been on my Wii Fit every day for the past few days for at least an hour. When I walked to class this morning, I realized I no longer huffed and puffed from walking to class. :)

Tomorrow I am going to be performing in an alumni-student concert for my old high school choir. My old dress pants were WAY too big (size 22w) so I had to go out and buy a new pair today. I've been wearing size 20w jeans, and I've noticed they're a little baggy lately. So I decided to try on a pair of 18w dress pants today - and they FIT PERFECTLY!!!! They made my bum look GREAT too!
I felt SO great. I haven't been able to wear 18 in years!

I bought a pair of trousers before Christmas, with a stretch waistband, so I was sure they'd fit. UK16. Clearly, I was in deep denial, because although the band was stretchy, it didn't stretch all the way round, the front 1/3 is fixed. With a push and a shove, I could Just get it over my lower spare tyre but it was so tight I couldn't get anything in the pockets, and I couldn't sit down either!
Put them on today, and they're delightfully roomy all round. nice.

I LOVE to travel again. Let me elaborate.
1) I can fit comfortably in airplane seats, the arm rests can come down and I am not squished up against my neighbour
2) I can use the airplane seatbelt without the extender
3) The tray can lower down completely and is not resting on my lap, so it actually sits flat
4) I can now wrap hotel towels completely around me
My NSV was getting out for my first April walk/jog, this morning was absolutely beautiful - sunny, perfect temperature. It felt so good to feel my legs burning when I was powering up those hills!

I was straightening my closet this morning and came across my custom made horseback riding suit. Just for giggles, I tried on the pants. I can get them on and off without unbuttoning or unzipping. This is a pair of pants that was custom made to fit my body snuggly. In November (the last time I wore them), I had to get the waist and calves let out so that I could actually bend my knee while on the horse.
I have never been so excited to see a $600 piece of clothing not fit!
Also, just 4 days back from a 9 day vacation in a country that serves rice with everything, way more liquor than I normally consume in a year, and being absolutely restricted from logging any of the food I ate, I am back to my pre-vacation weight!
One of my c-workers was complaining that none of her clothes from last summer fit and I was thinking (couldn't say it) "yeah, me too; but mine are too big" Thank goodness for consignment stores.

Two NSV's in one day for me!
(1) As of my weigh-in this morning, I have lost 10% of my starting weight.
(2) I bought a suit for an interview tomorrow. Size 18W. (The suit, not the interview. :) ) I haven't been able to wear an 18 in at least three years.

I never see the "big boss" at work but we had a staff meeting yesterday and I saw her then. Today she actually sought me out because she wanted to tell me how great I looked!
This came on the heels of a coworker studying my face closely and saying, "You just look like a porcelain doll these days, your skin is great and you just glow!" (clean eating, water, exercise and cetaphil!)
and last but not least-
Avoided my binge trigger. Cookies.
I was late for my knitting club tonight and the woman who owns the local bakery had brought cookies. She made sure to save me one because she knows how much I love her sugar cookies (Small town, we all know each other). She was so excited that I was there and there was a cookie for me, I couldn't tell her no. I did tell her I'd just had dinner so I'd take it home for later. That cookie is in a ziploc baggy and in my freezer now (throwing away one of her cookies is just not something I can do). When I am feeling like I can control my sugar better, I'll eat it then.

I absolutely love reading these! I don't know about you ladies, but the NSV's are the best, they are the ones that really hit home and lets you see without a doubt that you are making progress. Big congratulations on all your wonderful achievements!
My own NSV isn't all that spectacular, but I have been walking a LOT lately, and although it's a little bit painful at times I have come to enjoy it and I do it for the pleasure of it, not just cause I know it's good. I find myself wanting to push that bit more, and it's been so many years since I felt like that I thought it was just something I had imagined.

I don't know if this is really a NSV or not... I got wolf whistled at this morning while walking the dogs... by a fifth grader!!! (There's a middle school one block down from my house.) I was shocked! He smiled at me too, so I know he was serious about it. Way, way weird. I didn't like it, but, there are worse things I guess...?

Yesterday a co-worker (one who has not commented on my weight loss previously) said as I passed her, "You are lookin' skinny!"
My other NSV is that my husband and I now have little problem physically negotiating working in our very small kitchen at the same time. He can make lunches for the kids and I can make my lunch, and we just slip around each other--which we really could not do before losing 150 pounds combined. We lost a whole other adult-sized person! :) So it's no surprise, but it's really nice to feel comfortable working in there together.

When I got to work this morning there was a Cinnamon Melts from McDonald's on my desk. One of the girls had bought one for everyone today (small office). I set it aside and thanked her for the treat when I saw her but I have not touched it! I just can't throw away food though so I am taking it home for my husband. If he doesn't want it I guess the dogs will. Only a couple of people at work know that I am trying to make a lifestyle change or else I am sure this lady would not have brought me one.
I looked this up on the website and it has 460 calories!!!
I love reading the NSVs!

I have a strange NSV, I hope it is not TMI. I never knew that underwear that is too big is uncomfortable. About 3 weeks ago, I had to go buy some new ones in a smaller size. Yesterday, I was getting dressed in the dark so not to wake up DH. I just reached in the drawer and grabbed a pair of underwear. I was uncomfortable all day because they were just too big.
I thought that I had let one of my old pairs get mixed in with the new ones. I was surprised to learn that this was one of the NEW pairs. Guess I need to go buy smaller ones!

Yesterday I went on a seven mile hike up Frozen Head Mountain and this morning I am not even sore. The friend I hiked with had a really hard time, but I didn't struggle much at all (except at the very top when the climb was really steep). It was a good lesson in just how much my cardiovascular fitness has improved over the past year.

Today was maybe out last outing in the snow. We took the boys ice fishing and I knew I'd be getting in the snow so I tried on my ski pants and they fit good. I've been wearing them all winter but haven't been able to do up the zipper all the way or the buttons. But today I did up the buttons and zipper both. I'm so happy and hopefully next year they will be way too big and I'll have to use a belt to keep them on.

After lunch today I SO wanted some chocolate and the sweet shop is 50 yards away across the road; and I've got plenty spare calories today but I'm trying not to eat processed stuff too much, especiall as tomorrow is an interim weigh day; but I wanted it.
Instead I had a smoothie made with frozen berries and soy milk, and that was great and did the trick!

I found this elsewhere on the web and thought you might like to see it. It made me laugh. Don't know who wrote it, so we'll just say it's by Author Unknown . . .
And God populated the earth with broccoli and cauliflower and spinach and green and yellow vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.
And Satan created McDonald's. And McDonald's brought forth the 99-cent double-cheeseburger. And Satan said to Man, "You want fries with that?" And Man said, "Super size them." And Man gained pounds.
And God created the healthful yogurt, that woman might keep her figure that man found so fair.
And Satan froze the yogurt, and he brought forth chocolate, nuts and brightly colored sprinkle candy to put on the yogurt. And woman gained pounds.
And God said, "Try my crispy fresh salad."
And Satan brought forth creamy dressings, bacon bits, and shredded cheese. And there was ice cream for dessert. And woman gained pounds.
And God said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil with which to cook them."
And Satan brought forth chicken-fried steak from Cracker Barrel so big it needed its own platter And Man gained pounds, and his bad cholesterol went through the roof.
And God brought forth running shoes, and Man resolved to lose those extra pounds.
And Satan brought forth cable TV with remote control so Man would not have to toil to change channels between ESPN and ESPN2. And Man gained pounds.
And God said, "You're running up the score, Devil." And God brought forth the potato, a vegetable naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition.
And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fat fried them. And he created sour cream dip also. And Man clutched his remote control and ate the potato chips swaddled in cholesterol. And Satan saw and said, "It is good." And Man went into cardiac arrest.
And God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery.....
And Satan created HMOs...

I'm not too far along yet with this current go-round with weight loss, but a friend told me that she can tell that I've lost some (she knew that I've been working on it, so it isn't a total surprise that she said it, but... it was nice to hear.)
But the big one was that I went walking with my friend at lunch. We go to this park in town that is about 3/4 of a mile around and then we eat lunch together. We were walking as soon as the weather allowed earlier this year, but haven't been lately because of the rain/cold/snow/etc. I've been going to the gym 6 days a week for the past 4 weeks, so I've been putting in some good workout time. Well, when we went walking today, we made 2 times around. I was so pleased that it was fairly easy where just a couple of months ago, I was struggling to make one time around!

Had dinner at the in-laws yesterday - home of great and rarely healthy food. Grabbed the chair in front of the huge bowl of undressed green salad, and filled the entire center of my dinner plate with about 4 cups of salad. Proceeded to go around the edges with the rest of the high-color good stuff - and brought that dinner in at only 550 calories! Major victory - I have fallen prey for 20 years to great German sausages, cheesy potatoes, and gravy - oh gawd, the gravy ...

Really cool one today!
I started going to the gym 6 days a week on March 3rd. I haven't lost a pound since then but I've lost MORE THAN TWO SIZES!!!!
This morning I tried on a long denim jumper I bought in 2000. It's a size 18 misses. I tried it on around Valentine's Day, thinking I could maybe wear it out, since it's cute. NOPE. It has one button on the inside side, wraps around, ties in front. It buttoned BARELY and tied BARELY. All you could see was my big giant lower stomach. Looked like K-RAP. Looked like a sausage in a denim wrapper. Not pretty.
Threw it on this morning just for S&G and...OMG...it's too big. IT'S TOO BIG!!! It's LOOSE! It's a wrap-around style jumper so it has to fit in order to look good. I may have missed my window of opportunity to wear it!
I'm going to have it dry-cleaned (since I don't want to iron it ~ it's got a lot of material) and hope it shrinks a little in the process...then try it on again with a push-up bra to see if that helps "fill in" a bit...otherwise, good-bye old friend.
TWO SIZES in five weeks!!!! People, get yourselves to the gym! Lift weights!! Wish I'd started doing this 20 years ago!!!!

Normally I am just awful about staying on plan when I'm out of my normal routine. If I'm ever away from home for an extended period of time, I use it as an excuse to eat poorly and never exercise. Well no more! I spent Sunday to Thursday visiting my grandma and some other relatives for my spring break. I stayed on plan the whole time and hit the gym everyday! We went out to eat everyday (sometimes twice in one day!) and I managed to plan every meal ahead of time and eat sensibly at each restaurant (which included Applebee's, Olive Garden, and Papa Vinos!).
Holy moly it was hard, but I'm so glad I stayed on plan because I ended up busting out of the 170's and hitting 168 this morning! I have never, ever, ever lost weight on a "vacation." And that's probably the best NSV I've had yet!

Down in my basement of "small" clothes (14s and 16s) I had two very, very nice suits ~ "interview" suits. They have names. One is "Small" and the other is "Tiny." Both are gray. Small is charcoal and Tiny is a really nice metallic pewter (the description may sound scary but trust me it is a gorgeous suit).
I remember buying both of them. I bought Tiny for an interview with the John Kerry Presidential Campaign back in 2003 (didn't get the job, and that's quite OK LOL). I bought Small to go to a movie premiere spotlighting the nonprofit my husband (at the time) worked for.
So in my head, I was quite sure Small was a 16 and Tiny was a 14. Well, Tiny is a 14W, way too small. But Small is a 20! And, by gum, IT FITS!!!! I tried it on today and it totally, completely, utterly fits!!!! It looks FANTASTIC!!!!! I brought it upstairs and put it in my truck so I can take it to the dry cleaner tomorrow...and then I will HAVE A SUIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I got laid off, divorced, depressed, drunk and gained all this weight, I wore sweatpants (virtually) every day, to work when I could, then at home and on weekends when I got a job that required dress clothes...for FIVE YEARS. Five years of crap-nasty, ugly, worn out, depressing SWEATPANTS. This nice Armani suit lived in my basement that entire time but I couldn't even conceive of being able to get one fat leg into it.
OMG I DON'T BELIEVE MY SMALL SUIT FITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And that, my friends, is today's Non-Scale Victory! I am fixing to go spend $15 to get this suit cleaned and it will be money Very Well Spent!!!!!

Instead of having the airlines & the airport dictate my meals last week, I took the bull by its horns:

There is a guy that works in a shop next to mine who is very shy. He came over last week to bring me my mail. Before he left he paused and very seriously said "I just want to tell you that you look fabulous!" It was really sweet. I could tell it was very hard for him to say something so personal. A couple of months ago he looked me up and down with a shocked look on his face and then was embarrassed. I got such a kick out of it and hubby did too when I told him.

Went to lunch with a friend.
I wanted coffee with hot milk but drank it black, which was also good.
I wanted 'Greek cheese pie' - layers of cheese and filo pastry, it said - but had a baked potato with a little chili con carne and salad, which was very tasty also.
My Companion had a big piece of apple pie after, and kept urging me to the cake trolley.
Not only did I happily say no, I genuinely couldn't see why I'd eat something when I was no longer hungry.
NSV #1 - ate wisely, and discovered I had plenty calories left for a good meal tonight when I got home.
NSV #2 - it feels like some sensible eating thought patterns have become established!

Emily this is great news!!! Do not be scared of weights you are going to be blown away by the results. I've had a trainer since Feb 1st, it's the best thing I've done for myself in years. Which leads me into my NSV...
I went to TJ Maxx to try on pants today and I fit into a size 10 from The Limited...OMG are you kidding me how is this possible being 177?!?! I so think it's the weigh training. My bodyfat is 19% lower then when I was in the army and I was 165 (give or take 5 lbs) in a size 12/14. Once step away from single digit sizes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm freaking out (in a good way) :D

I love this thread.
I had another one on Sunday ~ another NSV. I had to bathe my 2 dogs. When I was 370ish lbs, it killed my knees to kneel down on the tile in the bathroom to do that. It almost broke my back in half to lean over the tub to scrub them. It was excruciating. It also took an act of Congress to get me on and off the floor. I'm really strong but I was not strong enough to lift myself up holding onto the bathtub with the floor all slippery from washing dogs that like to shake dry. So, when I was over 300 lbs, dogs only got bathed when it was absolutely necessary, like, they'd rolled in dead stinky things.
Well! Sunday I decided the girls needed baths. So, into the tub they went. I kneeled down. I scrubbed and scrubbed. I LOVED it!! There was no pain! My knees didn't hurt! My back didn't hurt! It was easy to get down to the floor and get back up again! I could have bathed 10 dogs if I'd needed to!
It was AWESOME!!!!

I realized that I'm technically closer to 200 pounds than 300... Maybe after a while, I'll be closer to 100 than 200? That would be good.
The major NSV is being able to fit into my uniform shirts for work just in time for the consistently warm weather. I was really concerned about what I was going to do when the warm weather hit and I had to put away my nice oversized hoodies that conceal my fat rolls! They fit ... adequately... at this point, but I think by the time the weather goes from warm to hot in the next month or so, I'll be even more comfortable in them. Here's to not having to hide inside huge hoodies!

My butt is shrinking. My pants are looser and my nice dress pants that were perfect length before are not dragging on the floor with shoes on. I'll have to do some hemming.

I just had to laugh at myself over this one.
So, on my break, I went down to the river - half a block away. I sat on the ground, leaned back against a rock, ate my snack, drank my water, and read a book. It was very nice. Just beautiful today. So I am coming back and I get to the street after the light has turned red. I start across, walking fast. the light turns green and there are cars waiting to go so I start to jog to get across faster. I have a book in one hand and a water bottle in the other and I realize about two steps in that I am about to lose my pants! I have been tugging them up all day long but thought they were okay. Nope, they were halfway down my butt and picking up speed before I could throw my water bottle into my other hand and pull them back up.
I don't think anyone saw anything but it cracked me up. It's definitely time to get a belt. :)

Quite possibly the biggest NSV of my life happened yesterday morning. I have been having some issues at work that were bad enough for me to have to consult an attorney. The powers-that-be and I had a meeting on Friday (where, thankfully, the situation was completely resolved). When I woke up on Friday morning, my stomach was in knots. I didn't feel like eating.
Me. I didn't feel like eating! Normally, in situations of complete stress and disarray, ALL I want to do is eat!
And yes, I did end up eating breakfast, just at 10:00 instead of 6:00.

Made it to the end of a day when all I wanted to do was eat - but I didn't. Not more than planned anyway.
OK, the day's not quite over yet but I've got to a time when I just don't bother eating after (around 7:30pm) and I've still got a cup of coffee with milk to go, so I'm good.
Oh yea, and I did a TON of ironing to distract myself!

This is the best thread, so inspiring.
I went throw my wardrobe yesterday and bagged up anything that was too big. It's a fairly significant pile. The best bit is that I got to through out the grey pants that I last fit into 5 years ago! The were a mini-goal, but I haven't been into the back of my cupboard in so long that I shrank out of them before I got round to trying them on again. (I always hated them, so yay!)

I took a bath last night for the first time since losing weight, our house was built in the 60's so it's a small tub, and my a** didn't act like a dam and block all the warm water from coming up to my chest. I can fit in our bath tub!!! This made me cry.

Yesterday, I had my very first unsolicited "you look like you're losing weight" comment. I could get addicted to those!

I just put on a pair of size 20 jeans that I haven't worn in at least 4 years and they fit!
They are not even the type with any stretch in them. Just regular ol' jeans!!!!
I don't like the VERY low waist on them (I must have at one point in my life) but at this point, I don't care if I am flashing my undies at the world!!!!! :carrot:

My NSV is that I just realized that as of 1 lb ago (at 164), I am NO LONGER OVERWEIGHT. At my current weight, my BMI is 24.9!!! Technically (or at least medically, or whatever)--I'm "normal"!! :D Never would have thought I'd see the day...

As of this week, I discovered that I no longer have to shop in the Plus department where I work. Looking forward to using the extra discount days we have next payday weekend to buy a few Misses shirts.

Today I bought a skort. A skort!! DCHound, who never, ever, EVER shows her legs bought a skort. And I'm wearing it! Yeah ok, I haven't had showgirl legs since 6th grade (seriously) but they now look OK enough to wear a skort and nobody has run away screaming MY EYES MY EYES yet! It'll look even better after I give myself my bday present, tanning bed time.
I also bought an XL top, misses 14/16, from Costco and it fits! And looks great!

I had a goal for April of running for two minutes without stopping. I was determined that it was going to happen for me. I haven't run that long consistently since I played basketball 15 years ago. In that time I have gained 100lbs and two ankle surgeries.
On Wednesday, I ran twice for 2 minutes. I was soooo proud of myself that I wanted to cry on the treadmill. Now, my next goal is to do it for 3 minutes and keep increasing my time.

One of my coworkers, with whom I very rarely interact (our jobs are so different), just went out of her way to come over to me and tell me "I just wanted to tell you you look beautiful today." Wow I haven't heard that in a loooooong time. It was so nice. Particularly because I am wearing, for the first time in 5 years, an article of clothing that is NOT a plus size. It is a regular XL (probably a 16/18) top from Costco, nothing special but a very nice shade of brown, and it fits!
I completed my first half-marathon Saturday.

So, tonight was the last night of my toughest class this semester. A few weeks ago, me and some of the girls in my class talked about doing something afterwards to celebrate being done. We only talked about it once, never finalized anything though. Well, as I was planning out my menu for today last night I thought "Hm..maybe I should save up some points just in case we do something after class." So that's what I did.
We ended up going to Ben and Jerry's after class. I got the Chocolate Fudge Brownie Low-fat Frozen Yogurt. It was delicious. I estimated it to be about 6 points because a 1/2 cup serving is 3 points and their small size looked to be about a cup to me.
I am happy to report I did NOT go over my points today. And I ate normally all day...even had snacks. I can't believe how good I'm getting at this! I mean, heck, if I can plan in Ben and Jerry's and not go over my points, then that must mean I can keep this lifestyle up for the rest of my life!
I never imagined I'd be able to eat Ben and Jerry's guilt free!
