I have been OP, but I am having slow weight loss. I take levothroid, .20, and blood levels are good. I am not giving up on this; I expect to lose weight. I think it will be slow, but that is okay, too. We went to Ryan's Steakhouse last night for their steak. It was great. Did good - just steak, green beans, carrots, baby green lima beans. No dessert! Took grandbaby Sydney, and on the way, she had an earache. By the time we left 30 minutes later, she was crying out in pain, and we had to go to the emergency room. Ear infection - got medicine - okay today. My brother is here from Al because of my mother's surgery Monday. Pacemaker replacement. Doc says routine - hope he is right. She is 84 YOA but fiesty! Wish us luck and keep us in your prayers.

i have finals this week, and the project i was working on in the computer lab got screwed up and lost. i saved it, but the hard drive on the computer got &*#(% and it wouldn't access anything i had saved, and by trying to access it, it damaged what i had saved. leaving me with not much to work with. i hate macs.

i'll end here, cuz i'm not a happy camper right now.

ap...this week will be better. be gentle with yourself, and do something fun to destress and relax.

bummer on the kelp allergy. the only thing i was ever allergic to was some unpasteurized apple juice i had once in utah. i was completely broken out in hives. it was horrible. i hope your reaciton wasn't that bad.

i finally got hte project done. i just have to write a paper for soc, study for finance and do one more problem set for that, and then write up a lit review for creative writing. but the lit review can be done tomorrow.

Mama's surgery went fine. I only slept one hour Sun. night, and mama slept about 3 hrs. Everything was great. We came home today. You can imagine with everything going on today, I was OP if you want to call it that. I had no challenges about food because I was too busy. Hope tomorrow is a good day and I stay OP. I work at parttime job tomorrow so that will help. Hope everybody had a good day. Boy, was it hot today! As we were leaving Savannah, it registered 102, started raining and came down to 84, 40 miles further, it was 107. Waycross was 102 for the day. Glad I was inside most of the day. Have a good day tomorrow and we will chat tomorrow.

andrea - how are things? I remember doing what you are doing. Stressful!!!! I am sure that is partly responsible for your bingeing(sp?). Concentrate on graduating, complain and brag to us, and then focus on OP. Do the best you can daily. I am proud for you on graduation. I know what an accomplishment that is. Congrats!

Trix - Allergy to kelp? What did you do for the itching besides scratch? Sorry to hear about that. Hope doc can help. Fortunately(?), I am not allergic to any foods, just other things.

Had a good day so far, worked til 2, Mama is doing very well, I am OP. It is hot, but I had to complain about something.

Have a good day, girls!

lol. im not graduating& trix isnt allergic to kelp-i am and its really hard, its annoying feeling. ty 4 the support tho. went 2 dr 4 anxiety today&she took blood to test thyroid. i think my stress& my hands(my skin is ripped apart& i cant make it go away) is what made her do it so we will see.

I reread what I had typed. Just reverse names. Would you believe that I made notes so I would not mix you two up when I wrote? Haha. I am interested in hearing what your doctor says about thyroid. I am not sure that most doctors know a lot about it. I don't know if you read in one of my posts, but I took mama to one and was very very disappointed. The examination was not what we expected. She said she is not going back to her. She is feisty? I agreed with her on this one.

I had a great day. I went over to my daughter's to see Baby Sydney and sneaked in a weigh-in. I had lost 2 lbs! I was happy. You think it might be brain cells from all this heat? Maybe that is why the mixup in my typing, huh? Well, good try for explanation, wasn't it

Have a nice night. :D

So I found out yesterday that I have a hypo thyroid... I have been trying to do some research on it and am only getting confused. I am not on any meds yet and not sure if I want to.

I've heard things that you are tired when you have a hypo - I've always been - but lived with it.

I've heard that you gain weight - well I've eaten a lot of bad foods in my life. Then how come I'm able to lose it now?

How are these meds going to improve my life?

My mother has this too - she said that I will lose weight. But I've heard everywhere that I will GAIN weight!!

I've lost 16 lbs so far and I'm NOT going backwards! THIS IS NOT AN OPTION.

I just don't like being told I can't do something.

Thanks for letting me vent :)

S4ASSP
06-05-2002, 09:33 PM
Hang in there, Dana. We are in this thing with you. I have been on Levothroid since 94. My doctor says that I am stable right now. I have always been an easy gainer, but like you said, I have made bad choices about eating certain foods. I joined Weight Watchers about a month ago and have lost 12 lbs so far. :D

I am doing well on the program and never thought I could lose weight. I always blamed my thyroid problem. WW has shown me how to make better choices in choosing, planning, preparing, and eating my meals. I just wish I had done this at an earlier age. I may have been spared some of the aches and pains I have now because of all the excess weight I have. Be patient with your medical problem, do a LOT of research on it. I did, too. When you decide, do research on the doctor you use and the medicine that you take, then you will be in control and better able to make your decisions about your health based on your knowledge.

Good job in the weight loss you have achieved so far. You are doing something right.;)

Have you checked out Focusonthyroid.com? I have found that to have a lot of information concerning thyroid. Andrea, have you seen a thyroidologist? I did not know such a person existed until I saw it surfing the web. One is not available where I live, but there is one in Savannah GA which is about 2 hrs from me. Before I got my medicine at a level that I needed, I gained and gained and gained. I have said before that I knew I ate wrong foods and too much at times, but there were those strange all of a sudden 10 lb gains that my doctor at the time did not attribute to thyroid. I looked up kelp allergy. know what? I could not find it. I found iodine pills made from kelp. Do you have other allergies, too? Can you tell that I am the mother hen type who wants to take care of her chicks? I do feel for you. Please post about tests when you hear.:^:

I have had a low thyroid for several years.
I have been trying to lose weight, but no success. My doctor ran another test and found that my level had dropped even lower.
She raised my dosage of synthroid.
I started a walking program a month ago.
What else can I do?

I am following weight watchers .. I am eating in the 24-29 range.

Slimdown - I also like WW. I find that it is easy to follow the program. However, I get lots of points because of my starting weight. I love the o points soup so that helps me. I also love salsa and ff tortilla chips so that is a good snack food. All I know is that I have thyroid problem for app 8 yrs, take med, and am now losing weight. When I first developed the problem and did not know why I was gaining weight, I was thoroughly disgusted with trying to lose weight. I gave up for years thinking that I could not lose. I had always wanted to try WW, and when I mentioned it to my daughter, she said she would do it with me. It works! I think I have my mind setting right this time, too. Stick with it. You can do it. Don't you just love this board?

Hmmmm! I will be interested to hear about Friday with the doctor. I am also glad to hear that you are going to join WW again. I love this points system. It has been very easy for me to adjust to this program. I rely heavily on the soup. Just made a pot today. I also love fruits and veggies so I adjusted well in that area. Since I have retired, I have not had as much time at home as I thought I would. This week has been fun so far. I have been at home doing the little things I wanted to do. Got a long way to go around the house, but if I am doing that, I am not eating! :D

Good luck with Friday's visit. Please post.
By the way, where is everybody!? Talk to you later.

Andrea - It looks like you are a little perturbed that you lost a pound this week. If you are not on meds for your thyroid and lost a pound, you have done fantastic! I weigh tonight and I HOPE I lost a pound this week. I still cannot believe that I can lose on this program, eating as much as I do. I would like the miracle loss, but I don't think that would be healthy for me. I think I am going to be a "1-2 lb week loss" person I am starting my exercise tapes again today. I cannot do as much as long as I used to, but I can rest and do them again lots of times! ;)

Have you joined WW yet? I think I have said before that I am an online member only. I do not choose to go to local meetings. It just doesn't fit my lifestyle. My daughter is doing this with me so I do have a buddy to rely on.

Tomorrow is the big day for you at doc. I will be posting either a happy face for loss or frown for gain. Wish me luck, and have a great day. :D

I weighed in today instead of yesterday. I lost 2 lbs! I am so happy. I just love this WW program. It has been a good day for me. I played and chased baby Sydney all day, and I am tired. I think I should get activity points for all that.

Little story about Sydney: I was working on computer today on eBay, and she came up to me and said, "BomBom, 'squirrel' down, and let's see the pictures." I cracked up. Needs a little practice on pronouncing computer lingo!

I work tomorrow and Sun. at my parttime job and then go to Savannah Mon to see my other three grandchildren. If they all lived in Waycross, I would get a lot of exercise daily. :D

Hope you all have a nice weekend.

Andrea - how did it go at the doctor's office? Good news, I hope.

Andrea - I took Synthroid to begin with and did okay with it for a few months. She switched me to Levothroid then because she said she thought my system would do better on that. Obviously, it did because I have been on it ever since. However, I started out at .05(I think that is how they say it) and gradually got up to .20 before it leveled off and blood tests were good. She said they have to start out slow to regulate it. Of course, it was every three months that the meds kept increasing, and along with that medicine, the blood pressure went up so I had to start taking medicine for that. Anyway, just don't give up on it. The unexplainable gains were what was so disappointing to me. I am so happy that I can occasionally have a loss that it thrills me to be losing so well on WW program. I hope you do well on the medicine. Glad you joined WW. Join us on those message boards, too. I'll look for you if you decide to go there. Have a good Sunday.:D

hbyaya - Glad to hear from you. I see on your profile that you are a grandmother, too, and still working at it. Lovely people, aren't they? I love to hear that people are walking a lot. I used to do it, but the old knees aren't what they used to be. Now, I walk in place in my house to a tape so I can sit when I need to. Works pretty well for me. Baby Sydney asked me this afternoon if she was going to be able to "bend down" when she gets old like me. I told her that she would because she was eating right and getting exercise like she should. That answer seemed to satisfy her. Look to hear from you soon.

06-16-2002, 10:41 PM
Andrea,

Did the doctor say what she was going to prescribe for you now? Any alternative? Have you had all the allergy tests done, and if so, were you allergic to foods, chemicals, nature odors? I had this done about two months ago (had it done in '94 also). They said I was not allergic to any foods at all; allergic to minor things plus I reacted strongly to certain trees, dog hair, dust mites, mold, mildew. Anyway, I go to my daughter's house now and will be away for a few days kissing and hugging people, big and small. I hope you get some help/relief. Stay OP and I will talk with you later. Yesterday was a busy day for me so I did not get to do too much at home so I will leave my house in a mess. Oh well, beds made, dishes done, bathroom clean. It will have to do.

QuilterInVA
06-17-2002, 05:50 PM
Too much thyroid will cause that reaction. You have to build up gradually. Maybe you really don't need it quite yet...not what you want to hear, I know, but there is no magic bullet or pill. It's doubtful your skin actually changed noticeably with one pill. It takes several weeks of treatment to see changes.

andreaphilip3
06-18-2002, 11:20 AM
it was aweful& yea, belive it or not, my skin did improve after 1 dose b/c certain spots on my hands are completely ripped up & they were startin to clear.

the dose was only .25. oh well.

ww weigh in in 2 days& im 1/2 pound heavier than my start weight... figures. i think its my period, i hope.

QuilterInVA
06-18-2002, 05:57 PM
Andrea, so sorry about this development. Have you been tested for anything else? One thing you could do for yourself is avoid soy and things in the cabbage family, limit carbs and increase exercise. I guess that's 3 things. Those all have a direct bearing on thyroid.

I'm in a strange situation. All of a sudden, my TSH has jumped to 22, even though I do all the above, keep my weight down, and take my levoxyl every day on an empty stomach and wait an hour before eating. Anyone else ever had this happen? The doctor seems to think it might have been a bad batch of levoxyl or lab results were mixed up. Anyway, he upped the dosage and I have to go back in 3 weeks to be retested...just when I thought things were getting better.

andreaphilip3
06-18-2002, 09:59 PM
thanks quilt. so sorry 2 hear that. hang in there. well, i know im not diabetic cuz she said my sugar was fine. i do all the things you mentioned also. i havent been tested for PCOS though&was reading a mag article about a woman who was diagnosed.

I visited my daughter in Savannah yesterday and today. Took my treats and snacks because I did not want to go off program. Well, baby was sick. I held her almost the whole time there. I definitely did NOT get off program. Could not eat. She would not let me put her down. I told my daughter that she must have told Baby Sarah about me joining WW and not wanting to gain weight. She is fine this evening so I came back.

SUSAN - WOW! GREAT TESTIMONIAL FOR WEIGHT LOSS.
Have you been on thyroid meds long? If so, what? Did you have abnormal problems losing weight? I thought I would have real problems, but so far, I have not.

Andrea - All kinds of obstacles try to keep us from jumping those hurdles. I will be in the cheerleading section cheering for you. YEY! I am practicing all ready.:jig:

tomorrow i give up the 2nd of 10 ww tickets& i am .6 heavier than my initial weigh in. i am really disgusted. overall, i have gained 2 1/4 pounds since the beginning of january.

i gained 1/4 this week.:( so frustating!

QuilterInVA
06-24-2002, 06:22 PM
Actually I was first diagnosed with thyroid problems over 30 years ago but they weren't deemed to be bad enough for treatment until 15 years ago so I struggled. I lost weight even though I wasn't on meds and managed to keep it off until I quit smoking and had a relapse of asthma which forces me to periodically go on prednisone which just ballons me up...but it does allow me to breath. I didn't lose fast but as I exercised more I lost steadily. I find I really have to be careful of carbs, which I dearly love...they pack the pounds on literally overnight. I was on synthroid and didn't do well. Since the doctor changed me to levoxyl, I've done better but periodically it has to be increased. Just part of life I guess at this stage. ;)
