I've been prescribed 10 mg paxil for mild depression. I was worried it would make me gain so I was hesitant to take it at all. I've actually only took it 3 days because I thought maybe the baby was acting fussier because I was taking it, but even not taking it she acts the same. She's not a crier, just wanted to be sure it wasn't affecting her in any way. Anyway, so now I'm back to being hesitant to take it that I'll gain weight or won't be able to lose. I can keep my weight steady or better yet gain all by myself without the help of paxil. What do you think?

Have you spoklen to your doctor about the side effects to your nursing baby?

The way my Dr put it to me is that everything you take gets to your baby in some dose or another (if you are bfing). I had to weigh the risks against the benefits. I ultimately decided against going back on my antidepressant while I was pg and while I'm bfing. That's just me. I agree with Aphil that you should talk to your Dr about it. Paxil is a pretty strong antidepressant.

I had some PPD also, and I started taking 1-2 caps of evening primrose oil a day because I didn't want to go on meds. It helped SO much!! I don't feel overly sad or depressed anymore. My hubby says I'm happy again. I would highly recomend trying it, and best of all it won't have any effect on baby!
Good luck.... PPD sucks. :(

Wow, I just read my previous post. I'm sorry I came off so snooty, that definitely wasn't my intention. :(

You have to be healthy to take care of your baby, period. My Dr told me that it's better for baby to get a little antidepressant than to have a mama that can't get out of bed in the morning to care for him. I agree 100%. Take care of you so that you can take care of others. :)

I know this thread is a bit old so maybe you won't even read this. I took paxil 10 mg after I had my first and I was nursing. He is now a healthy, smart, active four year old. It is a low dose of the drug and your dr prescribed it to you. *Does your dr know you are nursing?* As long as he or she is aware of the whole situation, it should be fine. Brooke Shields actually took paxil too, if I remember that correctly, after her first. She talks about it in her book...Down Came the Rain. *I think that is the title. It is like the little song. "Itsy Bitsy Spider". BTW, that is a really good book to read about PPD.
The paxil helped me a lot. Good luck!
