Good going VERMONTCHICK . . . read about your good FBGL and BP numbers over in the Winter thread before I closed it. Dont' forget to subscribe to this new one so it will be easier for you to find it.
Well . . . looking our my windows this morning . . . it's not yet as sunny as it has been but the temperatures are destined to be in the 'not too bad' range by this afternoon. On the down note; 'they' are calling for snow on Monday/Tuesday; but, let's face it, a lot can change before then, especially at this time of year.
So how did you celebrate today ??? I decided to take down the blankie I use to cover the drafty westerly facing door on my sunroom. Probably jumped the gun a little because as I sit in front of it right now, I definitely feel that silly draft leaking in -- but it looks so much more Spring-like.
After my terrific BGL reading yesterday morning, I'm back in the nasty range - 9 / 162 this morning - and I swear I did nothing differently overnight. As a matter of fact, my bedtime number was better than the night before.
No exciting plans for me today . . . may go out for a little while just because I can. Hope the sun comes out soon because it rained all day yesterday and I want to see the :sunny:.
Have a great Friday everybody . . . :grouphug:

Hey Meowee: I am sorry to hear about your readings! Mine were high by normal standards, but not for me. This morning I was 189. Two weeks ago when I went to the doctor and was diagnosed I was in the 400's. So it can only get better.
I am hoping that by losing weight (my goal is to lose 150lbs) I will be able to cotrol this disease without the yucky metformin.
How often does the doctor recommend you exercise if you're diabetic? I have been doing it every day, I think that may be the concensus.
It's getting a little bit better every day, but I am still depressed that I am going to have this disease for the rest of my life.

Sending you a bit of sunshine for tomorrow, Meowee. Sorry about the crappy BGL - you do go to the doc Monday, don't you.
Vermont Chick, nobody likes the diagnosis but at least you know now, not when things have passed the controllable point. The Metformin side effects will pass. It is encouraging to see your readings improve, isn't it? Exercise is fine and recommended for us "Sugar Babes" and an hour a day is great. Hang in there.
My reading was 6.2 or 111.6 this morning but the weight blipped up a wee bit. I think the salt in the tabbouleh was the culprit. I hope to see it blip the other way tomorrow.
I'm very tired this afternoon but am going outside to rake a bit although I'd prefer a nice nap. Hmmm -maybe I can work in both.

Happy Spring everyone!! It is so chilly here, it even snowed last night eek. Didn;t stick around by the morning though. I decided to take a short walk to celebrate it being spring. I didnt get very far but it was nice and next time I will go farther.
I lost 2.2lbs this week :carrot: and my blood sugars have been great. Though I am slacking off and I keep forgetting to test after meals ugh. After lunch I am so busy and after dinner I am so sleepy I just forget lol. I am trying to remember though so I can get a better idea of how I am doing.
I got a free skin for my tester from the company that made it. Purple with kitties my two favorite things lol. Silly but cute. And then I discovered on accident that it keeps track of weekly, 14 day and monthly averages of my blood sugar lol. How neat. I have an 89 for 7 day, 86 for 14 days, and 81 for 30 days.
I hope everyone is having a lovely spring day and feeling wonderful!

exercising an hour a day??? no way do i do that...should i be? i've been doing about 20 minutes every day.
i hit another record BS low today - 137. still pretty damn high, but probably the lowest i have been in at least two years. i suspect i had diabetes for a while before it was caught :(
oh, and i am happy to report that i am now out of the 300's....299.4 in fact. it's been about five years since i weighed that little.
i am so going to meet my goal of 150 :)

hi ladies -
wow, what a beautiful day it was, though cold - it was sunny!! today was rough for me. i stayed on program, but i got depressed again about having to "be on a diet" the rest of my life. i know i shouldn't look at it that way, but right now it feels that way. i SO wanted to chow down a whole bag of chips...instead i had one serving....then went to the store to stock up on veggies to snack on!
i am happy to report only a little blip of stomach issues today, and i seem to be still experiencing it at the moment.
meoweee, i hope you got out and enjoyed the day today.
rosey - a chocolate chip cookie sounds good to me!! my trouble is, i can't have just one...i want to eat them until i am full...not a good idea...
ruth - it's ok!! i think i might start walking too. i've been using my wii fit, and also My Fitness Coach for wii.
well i think it is high time that i have my desert...ww chocolate cake - i've been saving up all day!!!

It's starting to look a lot like snow. Oh well, never lasts too long at this time of year.
I did not sleep well at all last night and I'm definitely feeling like I need a second nap. thankfully, nothing pressing in my plans so I'll just go with the flow.
BGL was fine and dandy at 4 am (6.3 / 113). Of course by the time I actually got up and decided on breakfast about 7 am, it was 8.3 / 149, and it has been hovering in that same range all day.

Hi folks. It is great to hear how all of you are doing. I too am anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring, although they are predicting snow for Wednesday. We (my fiancee and I) have had an incredibly stressful week. I won't give you the details but it has been a nightmare. My DF bs was 409 tonight. Very unusual for him! He had to have a tooth pulled today and I figure along with the stress of this week, Maybe that is what is doing it for him. I am doing Ok and have been losing weight slowly but steadily.
Blasphemie. Those are some great numbers!
Vermontchick , congratulations on all your hard work and lowering those numbers (weight and bs) I am a little concerned regarding not checking at all for a week. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water :)

Morning all!
Carb question: when we count carbs, should we be counting actual carbs, or net carbs??
Activeadventurer: I decided to not check for a week because I am still newly diagnosed. In fact, my doctor didnt even tell me to get a moniter..i am doing that on my own. my numbers are still high, but the fact of the matter is, they're lower than they were two and a half weeks ago when i was diagnosed. i will probably crack, as i did yesterday afternoon! :p When i was diagnosed, my numbers were in the 400's. I bet your hubbie was SUPER stressed out. When i go the doctor (ESP that day, cause i knew they were going to call me diabetic...) i sometimes come close to panicking. i have NO control over there, but my heart races, my bp soars, and i am guessing my blood glucose goes up too. I think it had been hovering in the 300's because i calmed down, came home and tested and i was in the 300's. I have been steadly heading into the 100's.
On another note, each morning I wake up closer and closer to twoterville! the other day i was in twoterville, but i knew that was a fluke becauseit would have meant losing like four pounds in a single day. sure enough, the next day the numbers went back up a bit..
And I just gave in and teste!! still very high -160...but we're getting there...
I can't believe it's spring!!! It's FREEZING here. Yesterday our furnace crapped the bed, and we were on the phone all day trying to get someone to come check it out, no luck...so i've been locked in my room with the door shut, the space heater blasting.

Well, I cancelled my dentist appointment this morning -- it is ugly, ugly, ugly out there. Snowing and blowing like mad. I'm definitely going nowhere today. It's beginning to look like the predicted foot of snow may be even more. Apparently, my section of the Province is definitely getting the worst of this storm.
Doctor appointment yesterday was a big fizzle -- my chest noises were nice and quiet while he was listening (maybe I should invite over to listen to me when I try to get to sleep at night). So he put me on a Flovent inhaler (usually used to control asthma) and scheduled me for a chest x-ray on the 16th followed by a return appointment with him on the 30th.
Regarding those bouncy BGL numbers, his only suggestion was to keep increasing the Lantus. I don't think that is the answer, but we'll see where things are by the end of April.
Speaking of BGL . . . I shot up 20 units of Lantus last night (bedtime reading wa 12.7/229) and FBGL this morning was 8/144 . . . wonder what things will look like tonight and tomorrow morning -- this is an interesting adventure, if nothing else.
ACTIVE . . . it was likely the stress of the upcoming dentist appointment . . . stress, especially about the expectation of pain, can be horrendous for the BGL.
VERMONT . . . there are different schools of thought on the carb-counting issue . . . the CDA (Canadian Diabetic Association) provides listings for carb counting with the fibre already discounted and I tend to count both (total carbs and total fibre) and then subtract the fibre.
Basically, the problem arises because the two major types of fibre react differently in the body -- insoluble fibre (wheat bran found in breads for example) passes through the body completely undigested and it is the one usually referred to as being great for bowel health -- soluble fibre (fruit pectin among others) is digested partially and slowly so it does help to control BGL while helping to keep you feeling full. Vegetables, especially the low-carb kind, tend to contain both types of fibre. One thing to watch out for is Sugar Alcohols -- a lot of food nutrition labels tend to subtract it from the carb count. However, the CDA recommends discounting only about 50% of those kind of carbs. Of course, too many sugar alcohols (neither sugar or alcohol, BTW) do cause other problems too (gassy or runny tummy syndrome).
Hope the rest or you have a great day with lots of sunshine and absolutely no snow. . .

Good morning. We have sunshine and above freezing temps - sorry about that, MLinda. Also sorry your doc appointment didn't resolve much. I got diagnoses with asthma years ago, got an inhaler and used it for a while and the asthma has disappeared.
Vermont Chick, I've never done the net carb thing. I just keep my carbs in my range and work at getting the fiber to 20-30 grams per day. There is bowel cancer rampant in my family so I am very careful. Um...why did your furnace crap the bed? I've heard of pets doing that but....
Weight still 203 from the weekend but BGL was fine at 5.1/91.8 - at least I'm getting it half right!

03-24-2009, 11:32 AM
HA HA..regarding the Furnace crapping the bed...it's an expression. my family is from Boston, and that's an expression you use to say something either broke or failed...ie: "my car sh*t the bed." LOL.

Well it is official -- although I don't know how they can actually measure snowfall when it was all falling sideways because of the wind -- apparently we did not get the 12" originally predicted; we got 16 inches of the stupid wet white stuff. :yikes: It is still very cold and very windy nd ver overcast.
ROSEY . . . did you check Amazon fror seated exercise DVDs? I imagine they would have a few. Glad the volcanic erruption was kind to you. Would imagine any ash would be very hard on your asthma.
I hope a few weeks with the inhaler work the same kind of result for me as for you RUTH, but I don't think this is asthma anyway. No change yet, but, of course, I imagine it will take longer than a couple of days to notice anything.
BGL is still weird . . . 5.6 / 101 at bedtime last night so I only took 12 units of Lantus and still woke up with a 7.6 / 137 this morning. Somehow I don't think an extra 8 units would have worked out too well. :dizzy: Something is definitely going on in the middle of the night (although I was up by 5 am this morning).
Anyway, hope everybody else is having decent weather with more warmth and sunshine than we've got -- I need some vicarious Spring.

:eek: Volcanos... 16" of snow... It's official, I have no business complaining about the weather! Glad to see everybody hanging in their.

That being said. I also need to focus on getting more movement/exercise into my life. I talked with my Diabetes Educator last week and she wants me to check in with a phone call in a few weeks. Bedtime BGL was higher at 7.8 / 140 so I went with 17 units of Lantus last night and woke up with a 7.7 / 139 -- hey, at least it is stable; now if I can just get it down to below the 7 mark (below 125) and get it to stablize there.

wow...57...that is low! Do you take insulin? I had a bad day yesterday. I didn't do my exercises (I fell asleep), and I had a weight watchers sundae which was a huge mistake. i guess even if it is weight watchers, it doesn't mean that it's good for my blood sugar :(
I cannot wait to meet my diabetes educator...I hope I have lots of good things to tell her. I've lost about 17 pounds since my diagnosis, making me just over 50 pounds total.
I am hoping and praying that as I lose weight my blood sugar will be easier to control, and that I will be able to be a little more lax on the carbs.
For now I have been keeping them at 40% of my calories. I am relieved to see that the American Diabetes Association recommends you keep them 50-60% of your total intake.
Of course that should probably mean I need to just eat more fruits, but of course I want to go for the bread!
Here is a funny story: today I had some WONDERFUL cantaloupe, and it was absolutely heaven. It was just what I needed. Well...I went onlien to see how many carbs were in it..and was floored to see it was 45 grams. I nearly had a heart attack, until it occured to me that figure was for eating an entire melon
On a more personal level, I have been working on my teaching certification. I am an elementary school teacher, and I didn't major in teaching in college, so I am taking an "alternative" path...which means I have this ginormous packet of "competencies" that I need to document. I have all my progress saved to my computer...so I am thinking I need to go and buy a flash drive today!! Boy would that suck if my computer crashed!! (That has happened before....)
Have a great day, ladies!!!

No RUTH does not take insulin. Lucky Lady. She is well controlled by her eating choices and I think she takes Metformin. Sure she'll be along to correct me soon, if I'm wrong.
MEL, I think you need to learn about slow-acting carbs versus fast-acting carbs. Unfortunately, diet-friendly is not always diabetic-friendly. The less refined a grain is, and the more natural and unrefined a fruit or vegetable is, the lower the Glycemic Index and therefore the more diabetically friendly it is.
The CDA says the same thing as the ADA, but I have to admit that I think 40% is a better goal too; at least for me. I'd suggest that you just try to stay under the 50% mark and stay away from anything highly processed if you can.
Ruthxxx

Meowee, I simply forgot to eat my lovely home-made veggie soup because I ahd a phone call during dinner. I really am not becoming a complete carnivore.
Mel, I take 1500 g Metformin daily and 2.5 g of glyburide at bedtime - not insulin. I am really focusing on whole foods and very, very seldom eat desserts of any kind, particularly the frankenfood ones like ww desserts. Fruit and yogurt is my dessert of choice.

Meowee - Yeah, I pretty much knew the sundae was a bad idea as I was eating it. However the portion was small, and it was less than 30 grams of carbs. You are right, it was probably fast acting carbs. I need to look into maybe some south beach diet treats.
There are some weight watchers chocolate muffins that have five grams of fiber in each one, so I think those would be a better idea...

No sun for us today. In fact it was extremely foggggy first thing this morning. That has gone and things are just dull now. One sign of Spring though -- I finally saw my first robin; he really stood out well against the solid white of my yard.
Also on the good side -- my FBGL this morning was actually only 6.7 / 121 -- hope this trend continues.
MEL -- while the WW muffin with the fibre does sound better, it is still going to contain a lot of highly refined and therefore fast-acting carbs (probably made with good old 'enriched white flour'. You need to get away from overly processed and pre-packaged anything as much as you can. i am sooo bummed. i came home from work today, tested myself, and my bg was 124. since then i had my snack (avocado, whole gran crackers) and then later on had my dinner (bacon, eggs, 1 slice of double fiber bread). i then had an orange. i just tested my bg and it was 273. how is this happening to me? i eat like 30 grams of fiber a day, my carbs are like less than 50% of my calories, and my levels are still this high.
what gives?? other than talking to my doctor, what am i supposed to do? i have been on metformin for almost three weeks now. do you think it is still too soon to see lowered readings?
i am just so depressed, i dont know what else i can do except stop eating breads completely. :(
meowee
04-01-2009, 08:26 PM
a few questions . . .
How many crackers? They can be tricky. Did you test before dinner? How much time elapsed between your snack and your dinner? If not a couple of hours, it's almost part pf dinner. How long after your dinner did you do the test that gave the 273 reading? Your BGL within the first two hours of eating could be fairly high. Anywhere between 3 to 4 hours after eating you should be getting back to the before eating levels; depending, of course, on the carb load of your meal.
Your 124 was pretty good and I tend to think that the 273 could be more of a timing problem than a food problem. My personal opinion (but obviously I'm not a doctor nor am i in your body) is that the Metformin is definitely working and you need to give a little mlore thought and planning to your eating patterns.
When are you going for your appointment with the Diabetes Education specialist? and will you be seeing a dietician at that time, too? Make sure you are keeping comprehensive records of your BGL levels and the things you ate and the things you did to help them help you.

meowee -
a timing thing? if i am in complete control though, should my readings EVER be that high? when you say timing do you mean putting more time in between when i eat? that may be the problem. when i got home around 4 i had 18 (one serving) All Bran crackers - 5 grams of fiber per serving and 19 grams of carbs. Now that I think about it, I also had some sugar free yogurt covered raisins. i have NO idea why i ate those, they were a birthday present but i dont even like raisins. i had about ten of them. that was definitely relatively soon after the snack of crackers and avocado.
so then around 6:15 i ate my dinner...then after the dinner i ate the orange. so i tested myself...273. tested again ten minutes later...203...then before i went to bed i was 154. i ate a samll handful of peanuts..woke up and i was 164....
is it best to let two or three hours pass between eating?
i see my educator in three weeks. i have an apointment to see a nutritionist too, but i will probably have to cancel because my insurance does not cover that.

Good Morning Sweetie-Pies . . . :grouphug:
Happy to say my FBGL was back down to 5.7 (103) this morning and the scale- said 209. :yay: But who knows what either one will say tomorrow. :dunno:
Oh ROSEY . . . so sorry you got 'ashed' and you are definitely right about longing to see something other than snow.
Today it is supposed to be fairly mild but damp and dull. At least it's not snowing. Guess LouLou and I will be doing the lunch and shop routine for a little while anyway.
Okay VERMONT, it definitely sounds like timing. Definitely skip that immediately after dinner reading because it is just upsetting you. Your bedtime one was good. Also, I do think your avacodo, crackers and raisins snack is what really did you in, girl. Partly because it was fairly close to dinner and partly because raisins are a very high natural sugar fruit without any added sugar. As Rosey mentioned, some people are more impacted by fruit than others; so the after dinner orange may not have helped any either. Hopefully the DEC appointment will give you lots and lots of insight; don't forget to keep those written records to show him/her.
See you all later . . .

Thanks Meowee, I feel a lot better. I haven't been writing down my readings...aren't I awful? I have just sort of been keeping a mental tab on it. Actually, my doctor hasn't even recommended that I test yet. Maybe it is because she knows that it is too early and (as you have said) it is just upsetting me.
I love avocados, they are sooo yummy and FILLING. I hate raisins, so I have no idea why I even ate them. I guess I didn't want to hurt my brother's feelings.
I just am worried - if I don't get my bs down, I imagine my doctor will probably put me on insulin....I mean I guess...I dunno.
I know I am just getting myself worked up. I think I had been living with diabetes for years without it being diagnosed...that is so sad to me...

Hi, all. Not been posting much because when I come to the site, it takes a long time to load and sometimes won't load at all. Anyone else have this problem? Don't have the problem with any of the other sites I visit.
Anyway, we are having nice spring weather (I'll try to send you some, Rosey and Meowee). My current combo of meds seems to be doing the trick. Had a bgl of 96 this morning. It did blip up to 146 yesterday, but for me that's still pretty goo. I'm not eating very well but managing to maintain my weight. Need to start losing though. Have a good day.

Hi
Yesterday turned into one of those days when I simply inhaled every bite of food that came into my line of vision . . . far too many carbs were involved . . . including too much bread and lots of white-rice filled cabbage rolls. Finished off dinner with a great piece of extremely rich chocolate cake. Thanks to my "carb-coma", I was home and in bed before 9 pm.
Amazingly, the BGL at breakfast time was only 5.9 / 106. Needless to say, I avoided the scale this morning.
Today, so far, things are going fine. My latest weather complaint is that all the snow is melting so quickly, my yard looks like a swamp. As well, although today is just overcast, there is a lot of rain in the forecast for the next few days and that could turn my swamp into a lake.
Hope everybody else is having some gorgeous spring weather . . . :grouphug:

:high: for ACTIVE . . . way to make an early summer even more alluring.
Today is wet and windy around here, but there is lots of green (well brown) stuff peeking out through the swamp-land in my back yard. Still a bunch of snow along the fence, but it's going fast.
One day of good eating has gotten my FBGL back where it belongs at 5.4 / 97 this am, but the scale is still complaining slightly (1/2 a pound's worth) about the salt content of the Thursday debacle. Hopefully it will soon be gone again too.
How's the weekend shaping up for the rest of you? Nothing but fun stuff I hope. . . :grouphug:

Food has not been good and I've been avoiding the scale. BGL has been holding fine...so far. I'll try for a healthier day today. I don't think I've had a vegetable for three days! You'd think I'd be smarter at my age!

I probably eat about six cups of veggies everyday (counting salad greens which are really non-events in anybody's life) -- you just wait until I get you down here, Chickie -- maybe I'll tie you up and force feed you lots of fish and vegetables.
Oops, guess I'd better be careful about what I say or she'll be cancelling out on me. :s:

i do not eat enough vegetables either. truth be told, i don't like many of them. and they're such a pain to prepare. i eat a lot of carrot sticks, and i go back and forth with the salads cause i get so sick of them. i am someone who cannot eat the same thing all the time, i need variety or else i get nauseated...

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
Hope there is some sun in your forecast today because there is definitely none around here. April is definitely living up to it's reputation for being showery.
Both the FBGL (at 5.8/104) and the weight (at 209) are treating me well this morning. Hope that is also the same for all of you.
MEL . . . here's a task for the coming week . . . and for each of the weeks to come . . . try at least one new vegetable and hopefully some you will like. Some of my favourites are asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli all of which are very low carb and very easy to fix (throw them into some boiling water and cook until just tender) and my favourite starchy vegetable is, of course, sweet potatoes (just wash them, cut them up into chunks, and throw them into some boiling water too. They take about 2 or 3 times longer to get tender.
See you all later . . . :carrot: . . . those are good too.
VermontChick
04-05-2009, 10:38 AM
i will try that meowee...i DO like cooked veggies - i just thought that was less-than-ideal (to cook them). i love asparagus, i love cauliflower (raw and cooked). my favorite is avocado..i try to have two or three a week. i eat a small bit of them at a time. i think this week i will try dipping my carrots into mashed avocado instead of the crackers.
well i haven't tested my bg in a few days because i ran out of strips. i called my doctor and asked if she would write me a script for some test strips...well she did, but walmart seems to no longer carry the freestyle flash test strips..gah. so i went and purchased a new meter, but the meter doesnt have any strips in the box. the cheapest they had was a pack of 100 for 50 bucks...and i don't have that right now..so tomorrow i need to call the doc and ask for another script...
grrrr....
meowee
04-05-2009, 11:28 AM
watch out . . . avocado is a fruit and it has a very high fat content (it is good fat though) and thus a very high calorie count compared to the other veggies you mentioned.
For example:
1 cup of cubed avocado (or 1/2 cup mashed) has 240 calories; 13 grams of carb; 22 grams of
fat
1 cup chopped cooked cauliflower has 26 calories; 3 grams carb; 0 grams of fat
BIG difference . . . although those extra 200 calories may not have too much impact on your blood sugar level . . . they can have a big impact on your weight loss efforts . . . soooooo . . . . in the long run, they will influence the blood sugar, too.

MEL, make some hummus for dipping veggies. Try some other veggies besides carrots too. I love raw cauliflower and broccoli dipped.
Well, I faced the scale today and the results are not pretty. :( My ticker is 2 pounds out - maybe a bit more. Breakfast was brunch at the Legion but I did avoid the pancakes and maple syrup and had just one piece of ww toast. That's a start on cleaning up my act. I can't find my new vial of test strips so have not tested the past two days. Need to remedy that tomorrow.

Hello everyone!
I'm so grateful to have this website to get support and advice. While I’ve had family members who live with diabetes, its very different now that its me. I had another fasting glucose done this morning and got my results a few mins ago. The first one read 294! and this one read 262...still high but lower. I am anxious to see the doctor on Thursday so I can get more information and an idea of what I’m doing! I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone and taking control.
VermontChick, I agree with the idea of knowing this is you for the rest of your life...but I remind myself it doesn't have to define me! :)
Talk to you all soon!

Hate to have to tell you this MEL . . .
Unless it said 'whole wheat flour' it just means white flour and without the enrichment of adding back two or three little bits of vitamins.
White flour is made from wheat but with the germ (the part with the vitamins and other good stuff) and the bran (the insoluble fibre) removed leaving only the endosperm which is the starchy part. About the only thing that they might do to make it even worse is bleach it to make sure it is as white as possible.
Here's my Protein Pancakes . . . these are really good for you . . . not everybody loves them, of course, but I do . . .
Protein Pancakes
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup 1% cottage cheese
1/2 cup egg whites
Whiz around in the blender or with a mixer until no longer lumpy. Spray pan with cooking spray and cook like any other pancake. Serve with NSA maple-flavoured syrup or fruit.
Makes 2 good sized pancakes and the whole recipe (not counting what you put on top) has 5 grams of fat; 39 grms of carbs; 6 grams of fibre; 29 grams of protein and 310 calories.
Have you taken a look at the Recipes thread up in the Sticky area?
Hi there MONI . . . glad you found us. We are here and happy to answer any questions. Of course, none of us are doctors so all you get is the benefit of our own experiences.
Oh RUTH . . . I so agree that hummus is a great thing for veggie-dipping. I don't have it too often though because I just happen to prefer it on wasa bread or ryvita. :o

i am for having between 20-40 per meal..but everyone is different. what you're trying to figure out is how much sugar your body can handle. the american diabetes association recommends you get between 50-60% of all your calories from carbohydrates. carbs have 4 calories per gram. so, depending on what your daily target calorie count is, you can figure out how many grams of carbs you should be having every day. but you need to space them out all day or else your bs will spike...
good luck.
meowee...the first ingredient is unenriched wheat flour, then the second one is whole wheat flour....there's also 6 grams of fiber...and the serving size is two waffles, i couldn't believe it...

Good Morning SUGAR-BABES . . . :grouphug:
Good answer MEL :high: Just try not to make those waffles a regular thing.
And MONI, try to keep those carbs balanced fairly evenly across the day. Stay away from the highly refined ones and try to make sure that lots of your carbs come from brightly coloured vegetables and some fruits. Personally, I find that a 40% to 50% carb level works better for me, but everybody is different. Here's a link to the ADA site . . . http://www.diabetes.org/ . . . lots of good reading over there.
Well, the above is definitely in the vein of "do as I say, not as I do" this morning:o. I must own up to losing a battle with some Cool Whip last night. Unfortunately Cool Whip (with all that HFCS) and Peanut Butter (too much fat) are my worst triggers. I somehow cannot eat just a TBSP, or two, of either one. Anyway . . . I managed to keep the calorie count (and the overall carb count) within proper limits but the FBGL was 8.2 / 148 this morning.
Hope the rest of you have a really great day and that you see some nice sun. Unfortunately there is nothing but wet and windy in our forecast -- but no snow. :yay:

oops, i accidentally posted this on the wrong thread. oh well:
so, i just got an email from my dad. i told him that i recently found out that i am diabetic. he wrote back and said that the 'good news is, if it is caused solely from being overweight, it can go away when you lose weight.'
that would be one example of why i never took my risk of diabetes seriously. i always thought it would 'go away' with weight loss.
i personally feel that type ii diabetes by itself is a lot less serious than morbid obesity, which is also a disease that i have.
so that's how i look at it now.. what do you gals think?
meowee
04-06-2009, 05:24 PM
As I've said before . . . Diabetes is an incurable disease . . . you may, after losing all your excess weight, be able to control the disease strictly with diet and exercise (i.e., lifestyle changes) and you may never experience any of the terrible long-term side effects; but you will always be a diabetic. Prediabetes can be completely reversed and therefore eliminated. True Type II Diabetes cannot. I'd suggest you ask your doctor, or preferably a specialist called an 'endocrinologist', exactly what you've got.
All of the syndrome X items are so bad for you it is very difficult to decide if one -- Morbid Obesity -- is any worse than any of the others. On thing that is for sure is that morbid obesity is a serious problem and connected with a lot of possibly fatal diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and of course, type II Diabetes.

hmm....meowee i will read your article at lunch today...i just wanted to check in and give an update...i STILL do not have a new glucometer. the walmart pharmacy told me that they do not make freestyle flash test strips anymore...which seemed odd cause i see it in online stores...but whatever! so the pharmacist recommended a Relione ultima because the test strips are cheap. well i bought one, and it didnt come with any test strips. i contacted my insurance and they told me they cannot get me strips for it because they only cover specific models. sooooo i need to return the relione, call my insurance and tell them which model i would like (out of their choices).
the choices are between several Acu-chek models, and onetouch models. any suggestions, ladies? i may make this into a new thread so i can pose this question for others to see...

i was soooooooooo pissed today when i went to return my relion ultima to walmart and they WOULDNT TAKE IT BACK. my insurance is going to buy me a brand new NICE meter...so what the heck do i need the relion for? i believe them when they say it's a law, but it is not written ANYWHERE that all blood glucose sales are final..that ticks me off. if the pharmacist had told me, i wouldn NOT have bought it. so now i am stuck with this stupid cheap meter, which my insurance wont cover the cost of supplies for.
food today was bad..i caved and ate 12 candy eggs. i also had massive diarrhea later on as a result (thanks metformin).

Moni - As people have said everyone is different. I am sure you will get some carb counts from your dietician. Mine are 30-45 carbs per meal and 15-30 per snack with 3 meals and 3 snacks per day.
Add cancer to that list of more liklies when morbidly obese. I am a 4.5 year survivor and had a cancer that is more prevelent in people who are morbidly obese. A real wake up call.

My AM blood sugar is down from the day before so i hope thats a trend. She also put me on a cholestoral med. So far i've been making some good decisions. I've been aiming for about 30-35 carbs per meal. I did sign up for a diabetic class which includes a sit down with a nutritionist so i'll know more soon. Yes the vinegar would help, but I'd suggest you might be better off finding a cereal with a lower GI to begin with -- the 'all bran' type works best.
My FBGL was up to 6.5 / 117 this morning. Probably because I went to bed in a very bad mood after finishing my taxes. I'm officially in a worse mood now, because I just wrote a cheque for over $5,000.00 to the Revenue Department. I always have to pay them, but this is an exceptionally bad year. Yes JEANNE I'm taking Lantus and I've more or less stopped playing around with it. Now I'm just taking my 20 units at bedtime and letting the chips fall where they may. Mostly it's working. When I was trying to vary the amount based on by bedtime BGL, I seemed to be getting consistently higher morning readings. Thanks for the compliment on the weight loss. Hopefully you will get things back in balance when your system gets a little more accustomed to the extra insulin.
Yes MEL, don't beat yourself up too much. This is a lifelong jurney not a race. All any of us can do is the best we can at any given time. As long as we have more good days than bad ones, things will eventually work out.
Speaking of the bad days . . . . . . we had Chinese at lunch. Don't think I did too badly since I had mostly vegetables and stayed awahy from the breaded and deep fried things . . . but . . . the salt, oh my. Think I'll just stay away from the scale for a couple of days. :s:

Good going, MEL . . . makes you feel good about the day doesn't it . . . It's difficult not to be excited by the good readings and depressed by the bad ones, but don't forget it is the long term that matters. The HbgA1C readings that the doctor will probably have the lab do every three to six months is what really tells the tale. Try to to be too obsessive about the daily stuff.
And speaking of not being obsessive . . . both the scale and the FBGL (7.6/140) are in nasty land this morning. As mentioned before, the scale situation was totally expected; but the FBGL was not. Hey, they will both straighten out again.
Anyway, the sun is shining and it looks like it will be a wonderful day. Good thing since I have lots of 'visiting' type things on the go for today. The rest of my Easter weekend will be relatively quiet and that's probably just as well since the weather is supposed to deteriorate a lot by Sunday.
Hope you all have good weather and a really good Good Friday on the go. :grouphug:

Been running a bit high in the mornings with 7.2 to 7.6 but am not worrying too much. Life is too short to become obsessed with numbers.

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
Well, it is morning, but the weather is definitely trying to take a turn for "not good". Just overcast so far, but we shall see,
Both the FBGL (this morning 6.3/113) and the weight (this morning about 208.5 - yesterday was 212) seem to have recovered from the debacle of salty Chinese for lunch on Thursday.
Jeanne . . . you might want to ask you doctor? I've never heard of anyone taking Lantus in the morning, but really can't see that it would make a big difference. If you want to switch over, it might be wise to do it gradually though; like moving two or three hours later at a time?
Mel . . . your comments in that other thread just made me so proud . . . you've definitely been listening and learning, kiddo.
Ruth . . . those are high numbers for you; never fear; we both know that they will balance out again.
Okay, gotta get my 'rear in gear'. Need to call the drugstore for a repeat on meds and then hit Sobeys to pick up a couple of things they have on sale for today only.
Have a good Saturday everybody and try to stay away from those clucking bunnies -- hey, that's a reference to the Cadbury's Easteer Egg commercials; not what you are thinking. :s:

Hope you all have a glorious day . . . afraid it is raining around here, but so far no snow. Both the scale (208) and the FBGL (5.6/101) were very good to me today. Don't want to make a guess about tomorrow though. I will try to control myself, really I will.

Hello, I'm new here but I am hoping someone can answer a question for me. I was diagnosed on Friday and just picked up my meds yesterday(500 mg. 2/x day metforin and something else that I take with meals - Pranin? - don't have it handy). I started my meds last night and this morning my levels were higher (254) than before I took the meds (200). Does it take awhile for the meds to work or should it be more immediate? I have an appointment tomorrow morning with a diabetes educator so dietwise I followed weight watchers pretty much yesterday and did 20 min on the elliptical. I guess I expected a drop in levels immediately after starting meds but maybe it takes a few doses to start working? Any insight would be appreciated!

metformin is a systemic drug, and therefore its effects aren't immediate. i went through this earlier this pasts month when the same thng hapened to me. it can take weeks to see any changes, and months to see the full effects...be patietn...and welcome!!!

my fasting blood glucose seems to be something to be controled still. it was 114 this morning. then i had a weight watchers yogurt and it spiked up to 177. doesn't that seem high? any thoughts? i only had the yugurt because i was sick to my stomach - i threw up actually. do you think that could raise blood sugar levels? on a more sour note, i didnt lose any weight this week. i guess it's to be expected, i had a bad week, and only exercised three times.

Good Morning Sweeties . . . :grouphug: . . . and a special :welcome: for you JERSEY.
Don't worry, things take time and the only thing you can be certain of with Diabetes is the uncertainty. Just try to stay calm and relaxed because stress can make the BGL soar as can being sick, VERMONT.
Now for me . . . the BGL was up a bit this morning at 6.5 / 117 and might be because I didn't sleep too well, but who knows. At least the scale is still being kind at 208. HOWEVER, the weather is definitely not being kind -- it's snowing -- just off and on flurries and nothing seems to be sticking around.
See you later, gang . . . keep fighting the good fight.

Well, my BGL was 8.8 this morning - that's 158.4. I have no idea what is going on but don't like it one bit. I'll really watch the carbs today. The scale is up to 203 - probably because I ran out of my diuretic.
I wonder if it could be stress because I'm going to visit Meowee this coming weekend and am worrying about her force-feeding me vegetables!

i can't wait to hear about your visit ruth!! ha ha, i bet she will definitely force feed those veggies.
my metformin has been kicking me in the butt lately. when that happens i know i am not eating as well as i should. i lost only one pound this week (not sure if it was cause i only exercised three days, but i am pretty sure that it had more to do with the easter candy and piece of chocolate cake that i had).
i need to be eating more veggies, i have to be very proactive about that. i do not want to slip back into having carbs and crap (even if they're 'low cal') for snacks.
i have never felt better in my life, and i have no idea which lifestyle change i can attribute that to, but i don't think i want to find out!
i can't believe how many years i experienced fatigue, i just thought it was a way of life. it's like now i have this 'bounce' in all my steps..
..i swear i am not on any illegal substances!!
have a great day ladies...

Hey, MEL, a pound is a pound and one a week is 52 in a year. Bet you knew that! It's nice to hear that you are feeling better. I know I do when I eat properly.
:welcome: Jersey! Yes, it is overwhelming at first. After a while though, you'll just be whelmed. It does get easier.
I didn't weigh this morning so don't know if my "perfect" day yesterday had any results. It didn't affect my BGL though :( which was 7.7/138.6 when I tested it during the night at my potty break. Meowee and I were wondering if my high readings were "dawn syndrome" but I guess not.
I did have a small ww pita with dinner rather than the stir fry with a bit of rice that I'd planned. Sometimes my day gets away from me so I made sort of a fajita in a pita instead of a tortilla. Today will be better. I plan a huge salad and a wee meatloaf from my stash - it does have oatmeal in it so there will be no other significant carb, just a green salad.

My FBGL is 6.6 / 118 this morning which is okay, but a bit higher than I'd really like. Scale is a hair below 208 this morning though so I guess we will be thankful for that.
A pretty little dusting of white is covering the dirty looking brown grass roots this morning and the tips that are still sticking through definitely look fresh and green in contrast. Unfortunately, the forecast today is for more 'light flurries'. I know RUTH has sun, so I hope she brings some with her.
I remember way, way back when my meds and better eating started to kick in MEL. You don't realize how rotten you've been feeling until it's starts to lessen.

needless to say, my FBG this am was 148 :( it spiked to 172 after i ate breakfast.
i have this stupid mentality, that once i get my bs in control, i feel compelled to 'cheat' and ruin it all, beause i feel safe.
good news is my weight was down two pounds this am. i won't log it and make it official though, not until i see if it will stay the same for the next few days, lol.

hello...well i am still experiencing those early morning highs. i set my clock to get up at 2 am to see if it was high then, and it wasn't. i guess that means my highs are due to hormonal releases, and there really isn't a lot i can do to combat them.
it's hard to tell, cause my level was 123 before bed, 128 at 2 am, and then when i woke up it was 131. those numbers seem to be too close together to make a definitive decision. i suppose i can try again tonight.
i am doing great on vegetables, but not so great about tracking all the food i am eating. i haven't been snacking a lot, so i am pretty sure that i am staying under my points.
i have so much going on with work..and i will soon be in the process of moving (i was just offered an apartment).

Good Morning . . .
Think I'll be a little scarce around here for the rest of this month. My cousin, Jamie (we've been as close as brother and sister all our lives) finally lost a long battle with cancer yesterday.
Now, as I mentioned before, Ruthxxx is arriving today to spend the weekend with me. Guess I'll try to get on the same flight as she is on for the trip to Ontario on Monday morning. This should time out okay because his oldest son told me last night that there will be an autopsy to verify cause of death (something to do with the fact that he was a fireman). He will then be cremated and then there will be a memorial service. Liam didn't think anything much would be happening before next week anyway.
So, if you need assistance and can't find me, just scream for another Mod and someone will show up -- probably Ruthxxx.
Now if you want a roller coaster of FBGL . . . last night at 11:30, I bottomed out at 3.0 / 54 . . . got up and ate enough food to treat half a dozen lows; went back to bed and got up at 6:30 am and the FBGL was 9.2 / 166. An hour later it was 7.2 / 130. Decided that was good enough to stop bothering to test anymore.
What I'm trying to say, MEL is stop fretting so much and stop wearing out your fingers.
See you all later. :grouphug:

Well, this evening I notice that my bar is missing from my signature, but my quote is there.:?:
I have been off for a very long time, because it has been brutal around my house since about Oct 08. One thing after another with work, moving a college kid just before thanksgiving, husband surgery, traveling. I have been sick sick and sick since Feb 09. My F-I-L fell Feb 4th and broke his hip and had a spiral fracture of the upper arm, on the same side. He came home from rehab on Good Friday. I am presently in Chicago because my oldest son has been sick with some scary symptoms, so I have been getting him worked up besides moral support. I was supposed to be in Washington DC for a Nursing Conference, but I am where I should be. Hopefully test results come in tomorrow so I can go home Wed.
I am surprised at myself. I have been good with my BG, staying in my 90-105 range through all of this, and I got on the scale at the doctor's office while waiting for my son, and have maintained. Time to get going again. Since he has been so stressed with these symptoms, my son has gained 35 lbs. Maybe I will try a little "exercise challenge" by e-mail and help us both out.
My F-I-L is diabetic due to pancreatectomy in 1984, and doesn't know to this day a thing about it. I always learn something new when he is sick-mostly what not to do. I have the funniest story to share from when he was at rehab. He poorly controls himself and was really doing well at rehab. But he got "the grippe" ad his BG went shooting up. some good natured teasing from the nurse started because no one could figure it out. He was trying to "kill it like I always do". Needless to say I finally figured it out. He had been chugging his Listerine 7-10 times a day. With 21% alcohol in it, all he was killing was his BG. We couldn't stop laughing! The nurses had no idea. He is not a happy camper with his now alcohol free mouthwash. But his BG are back down.
I have missed you all. It took me 2 evenings to catch up on the thread. Hopefully now that I have jumped back in, I can get back to normal with all of you to lean on.
So sorry about your loss, Meowee. How are you doing?
Talk to you all later.

Evening all.
Hope the weather is better by you than this nasty stuff in Chicago.
Had to go to Lenscrafters yesterday afternoon because my glasses frame broke. Not what you want to do out of town! But we got something workable so I can drive home tomorrow. Mostly good news with my son's labwork, so I can go home without anything hanging overhead. The other son made it back to Orlando, so it's all good tonight. Went out for my favorite deep dish Chicago Pizza, and I was good, had salad and only 1 piece, and peaches for dessert. Cooked some healthy things to freeze for my son-we'll see if he asks for the recipes!
Everyone have a great night. I'll see if I can catch up when I get home tomorrow, but maybe not until Thursday morning-can't wait to see my daughter tomorrow, and that moping dog who doesn't eat when I am gone.

Good morning. My weight really did drop a bit over the weekend, thanks to Meowee the Veggie Pusher. Even my home scale says I'm back in ONEderland.
-
Now to get the FBGL in check. My diabetic counsellor told me not to worry about it too much and to get my HA1C done early next month. If it's getting close to 7, we will adjust the meds. She thinks the stress of my sore knees plus worry about my friend who has cancer may be affecting my morning readings. It's definitely not the Dawn Syndrome.
Right now the sun is supposed to shine right through the weekend and I will try to be outside a lot - with SPF30, of course! I hope the weather is spirit lifting where you are!

hello all...i saw my diabetes educator two days ago...i may have even mentioned it already...she was seriously the nicest woman ever. she was very enthusiastic, helpful and even gave me a hug when i left.
i have realized these past two weeks the importance of exercise. now that i have seen it on my meters, i realize. these past two weeks i have not been able to get my fasting bg down to a comfortable area. i was beating myself up about it, i couldn't figure it out. i was concentrating on my diet. then it occured to me that i hadnt been exercising (regularly). i was under the impression that exercising would lower your bg a little bit at the moment you did it, and not have an overall positive effect on your bg.
we'll see if those numbers improve after getting back into my routine.
on a positive note, the scale is treating me well. down another two pounds. i am actually now wondering if i am losing weight too fast. i am eating so much less than i used to be (mostly because i now wait 3 hours at least before eating to get my sugars down).

Mel, sounds like you lucked out with your counsellor. I really like my Jane too - and she gives hugs when needed. I'd not worry about losing weight too fast because the rate will stabilize as your body adjusts to the new routine. Exercise has long range as well as short term effect on BGL. I need to do more.
I'm still eating veggies like a fiend and had a nice 5.4 (97.2) FBGL this morning, maybe because I did not have any starchy carbs with dinner. Even at my age, this is a learning process!

Get to see the eye doctor today-the sooner I get new glasses the better. These temporary glasses will be just that. Too bad I had to buy the frame-maybe I can trade it out.
I was a little high for my BG this AM, but with driving all day and coconut shrimp for dinner, I'm not too concerned. It was only 103mg/dl. After reading the posts, I am thinking I will make an appointment with my dietician, I haven't seen her in a year. See what she has to say to get me on a losing track, not just a maintaining track. Think I will go check out the exercise and challenge posts and see what's cooking there that might peak my interest.
have a great day!

Mel, we all cave once in a while and just carry on. I had some crusty white bread last night too. It was to "use up" some yummy garlic marinade which would have poured down the sink just fine. We're human, dammit! I lucked out with a decent BGL this morning and weight stayed the same.
Peony, that's a good BGL in my opinion. Good idea to see your dietitian - we need to "tweak" our plans once in a while and she may have new ideas. (By the way, are there any male dietitians?)
Today will be full of temptations with a tea party this afternoon. I cannot take "just one" of those tiny sandwiches so will hope they have a veggie tray. Dinner party tonight but I am contributing a veggie tray so will be OK - unless they have pasta.
Happy TGIF, chickies.

Good question, RuthXXX! Even in the hospital, in 28 years, I have never seen a male dietician. Now, in one place we did have a male diabetes educator, but those are few and far between too. Good Luck later.:dust:
Mel, Things can fool you. Are you sure it was the white bread, or was there something else with it, or something NOT with it like a protein? For many months I avoided all pastas, until we were on vacation and I had fettuccini alfredo one night. BG went up, but not like with spaghetti and lasagna. Turned out that it wasn't the pasta, it was the sugar in the tomato sauce (same thing with BBQ sauce and ketsup etc). I get less of a rise with cookies and milk at bedtime than sauces at dinner (not that that's a common occurance). My dietician always says "you need to live, not survive". Plan your bread in your menu, and don't keep kicking yourself.
Both of my college boys are doing better, so today is all good! My 10 yr old daughter has a friend over for dinner--it is so great to be back in the phase when you can swap kids around instead of paying babysitters all the time. It worked when the boys were little, and I miss having them here to babysit. It is gorgeous out so we are grilling out for dinner as the girls are running amok in the yard. I love Spring!
Everyone have a great evening. Hope everyone is doing well. Catch you tomorrow. Kathy:flow2:
PS: are we still having weigh-in days? What day is it?

Good morning! I avoided the tea party sandwiches and was very careful at dinner - too careful as my FBGL was 2.7(48.6) this morning. I thought I had a hangover from the wine! Apple juice and some toast seems to have fixed it but I must remember to have carbs with wine next time. Pork tenderloin and green salad just doesn't do it.
Weigh-in day? I didn't know there was one in this section. I think some of us are focusing on blood sugar control over weightloss although losing weight does help a lot in controlling diabetes.

We live and learn, don't we! Mine was a little high last night, but we took the girls out for ice cream and I forgot to get a junior scoop at Baskin-Robbins. But this morning I was my normal self at 96mg/dl, so I will not sweat it too much.
Going to work on my new pilates chair. It was a christmas present to myself, but the rest of the world went haywire after that, and never started using it. I was going to go to water aerobics, but my husband is on call this morning and my daughter woke up sick.
Before I was AWOL we used to have a day to weigh in, but it's possible it was on another thread.
It is a beautiful morning here, had my breakfast out on the back deck. Everyone have a beautiful Saturday. Keep you posted on the chair!

HELLO AND GOOD MORNING!!!! :) :)
I have been MIA for awhile, sorry about that! First off it sounds like you ladies are doing really well!
Mel--CONGRATS on the weight loss! :) How do you feel? Clothes fitting better? caving is apart of the process, esp because you and I are still new at this.
The other night i really really wanted a burger so I got a double double from In and Out protein style. In my head i was thinking because there is no bun I can have fries! My BS wasn't too bad *not as bad as i thought it would be* but its wasn't great (133). The one thing I am no longer sure how to order is shusi! I love sushi but when i ate it i hit the 200's. I dont know if is it because i just had too muh or what.
I'm up to 1000mg of metformin at this point and it's working really well. This is my first week exercising and my bs have been great! :) :) :) I've been cooking and trying new way to be healthy. My challenge today be self control at a BBQ.
Ladies I hope you all continue to do well!! I'll try to post more often. Thanks! Have a beautiful saturday! :)

had a pretty good day - my bg is still all over the place. i guess it's still a thousand times better than it was two months ago....i just need to be patient and give my body time to recover. would you believe that i have been getting tired, fatigued and light-headed when my blood sugar goes below 120? my body has become so accustomed to levels in the 300's, it must think it's starving itself.
moni, you gotta give into those cravings sometimes! i am glad you do not berate yourself for indulging :) just think, you're still doing a hundred percent better than you were three or four weeks ago :)

My latest problems is dealing with TOM and cravings!! I want everything bad, fries, burgers, chicken, CHOCOLATE! I'm trying give in "smart". How do you all deal with that?
Yesterday I went to the bbq and ate alot. then i came home and still continued to snack. I didnt check my bs before bed but this mornig it was 108.

Hi ladies It is good to hear how everyone is doing.
Ruth Congratulations on Onederland! and Welcome back Kathy. Sounds like you have a very busy life!
I was disappointed when I had my physical last week that my A1C was up .2 but still decent at 6.5. My LDL was up 31 points. The price I pay for all that beef rather than chicken that I have been having the last few months. The numbers were a bit sobering and I seem to be correcting my course. Time will tell.

Evening all! We had such a beautiful day today. Too bad I missed most of the morning napping--went in on call and got home at 4:45am. That throws off the eating schedule, but not the BG too much. I just take my snacks with me. But I love when my meter sends me messages. At 10:00 when I did my morning sugar, it was 88mg/dl, so it wanted to know if I needed a snack. Wish I could have told it no, I needed breakfast. Did get my walk in and got the pots planted today. Just wish I had lost some weight this week.
Catch you all tomorrow after Dancing with the Stars!

Kathy-It begins a new weight, thus a chance to lose that weight! Good luck to you!
Mel--i totally agree, i love throwing on my IPOD and goig all out. You know what else i do, its rather silly but it helps!! I go shopping in my head. I think of all the cute things I want to wear when i can buy in smaller sizes! I also just picutre the new and improve Moni :)

moni - going to the clothing stores and trying on new stuff is a huge motivation for me too. i also have so much more energy now that my bg levels are lower. yes they are still higher than i'd like, but at least i am not still trying to function throughout the day with levels in the 300's (which i suspect is what i was doing for many years, i do not like to think about that though...).
i think i am down to a 26 now. my goal is to get into a 24, then i can shop again at the regular stores and not have to worry about going to special "plus sized" stores like Lane Bryant and Fashion bug

Hi, all. I've been having issues with the site so don't post as much as I used to. My bgl has gone up a bit because I'm not eating right. Still, it was only 117 this a.m., which is good for me. I've developed some kind of wierd nerve pain. When I get up from sitting I feel needle sharp pricks in my left leg from the knee to ankle. It goes away right away, but it's worrying. Is this neuropathy? I hope not. Will run it by my doc when I see him next month.
Last week we had four days of 90 degree weather, then it turned cold again. I prefer the cold if we must have extremes, though.
Rosey - I dress in a "uniform" too. I've given up dresses because I wear granny orthopedic shoes and socks. For work I have black pants which I get from Making It Big and mock neck turtlenecks from Lane Bryant. On the weekends I wear jeans. I have a closet full of clothes that I've outgrown. Hope to get back in them someday.
VermontChick
04-27-2009, 05:59 PM
rosetta, that doesn't sounds like neuropathy. It definitely sounds like you pinched a nerve somewhere. the prickling you feel it little sharp electric impulses being sent by your nerves.
where do you ladies work that you need uniforms? :) I haven't had to wear a uniform for a long time. i may soon though - my school is closing down and i may not have a job after august :( sniff.
Ruthxxx
04-28-2009, 09:59 AM
I think by uniform" Rosetta meant something she usually wears. I am a slacks and t-shirt type too, jean pants on gardening days. That's what I have on today as I am going outside in a few minutes. Yesterday at 84ºF was just too darned hot to get anything done. I kept telling myself it was good exercise but was exhausted after lugging three big garden carts to the compost mountain at the back of my property.
Got the BBQ cranked up for the first time last night and did pork tenderloin and grilled veggies I'd marinated in diet Italian dressing. Yummy and I'm kicking myself that I didn't do more veggies to have today. I think Meowee got me converted to eating more veggies. I'm also going to try fish today - either salmon or tuna as I have both in the freezer.
Hope you all have a good day.

Rosey Your comments about being self concious and responses really hit it for me. I am getting married in less than 6 weeks and although I don't think of myself as being particularily self concious I am scared to death of having everyone looking at me on my wedding day. I posted about it in the 100 pound club.

Did not get to the fish yesterday as I got home too late. I ended up with pasta and tomato/artichoke sauce - not a great choice but at least it was whole wheat. Had a run in with a gift of jellybeans last night but threw the rest out after the givers left. Why candy to a diabetic? I did indulge - orange jellybeans are fruit, right?
Anyhow, BGL was 3.2(57.6) this morning. Go figure!
Today will present a bit of a challenge with a late Easter Luncheon at the Day Away Programme. It'll definitely be ham but I'm hoping for a salad and some veggies. A lot of the clients are diabetic so I may luck out. Dinner tonight will definitely be salad and I may finally bite the bullet and cook fish. (Are you watching, Meowee? Maybe I should post her picture on the fridge.)

Hi, all. BGL 135 this a.m. Ate dinner with wine much later than usual last night. Feeling rather bloated, getting back into old habits. Went to an event last night with a favorite mystery writer who read a passage from her latest book about fat people and made comments about them that were very negative. Left a bad taste in my mouth. Will not buy any more of her books, I'll just wait until they show up in the library.
Ruth -- you're right, I was referring not to an actual uniform but the fact that I wear the same thing every day.
Rosey - enjoy your ipod. I have 500 vynl albums I'd like to download and maybe my 300 45s. Never happen. lol
Denise - Don't think about anything at your wedding but your intended and enjoy the day.
Well, we have office visitors so I have to get back to work.

How is everyone doing? Still the scale isn't budging, but I am exercising more. Guess I'll have to be patient.
Was looking forward to going back to Chicago, but may not get there. I had all my times mixed up and will miss the communion anyway, but 1 school in their area is already closed with a confirmed case of swine flu and the sister-school of my niece's is waiting for a confirmation and will probably be closed, meaning they will be too. My S-I-L thinks they will have to cancel communion as well. I think we will have to make a decision so we can cancel the hotel by 6pm today. I hate that for my family, but everyone needs to be safe. I will just call my son and check on him!
This is the 3rd day of rain, but we need it. Just wish to see the sun for a little bit to perk me up.
Rosey, we bought my mom an iPod last year for mother's day and she absloutely loves it. This year, she bought herself an iPhone, and has put some movies on it for when she goes to Tucson for a wedding. I think it's great--go for it!

Happy May 1!!! :encore: :sunny: :flow1:
I was greeted by a gain this morning - serves me right for skipping the scale yesterday. I know it's water weight but is still discouraging. I'll let my ticker lie for a while. The good news is that the BGL was fine. I still can't figure out April's high readings - perhaps it was stress from knee pain - or lack of veggies as Meowee would say if she were here. (I think she'll be back next week.)
May is such a glorious month. :encore: I hope we can all focus on enjoying it rather than worrying about weight, BGL and Life "blips". I intend to! :carrot:

Hi, all. Rainy day here but on the warm side. My bgl was 151 this a.m. Could be because I fogot to bring my Glucophage to work yesterday. Seeing Robert Redford last week was wonderful. He spent about an hour being interviewed and asking questions. Can't believe he is 71! I got within a few feet of him after the event when he went to his car. I've been very bad eating wise and will have to face the music when I weigh in tomorrow night. Go to the med lab in the morning to get blood drawn for my A1c. Hate those visits because I have to eat early the night before so I'll be fasting in the morning.

I'm up way too early today and thought it might be the BGL but I'm 4.1 (73.8) - a bit low but OK. Today I will call to get an appointment for my HA1C. Hello!
Mel--sorry to hear about the rough TOM! I've been there before! I'm looking forward to not having to shop only at Torrid or Lane Bryant. My short term goal is to get back down to a 14 pants and 18 top like when I first started college.
Things at work have been stressful this week and that has made my sugar spike up but nothing too scary. It's been about 124-135. I've continued to work out and can begin to see the fruits of my labor. My jeans are fitting better and so are my tops! YAy!!! I see my doctor next week and I'm looking forward to hearing her feedback. Beautiful day out there. I have banking to do after lunch but hope to get some more work done in the garden later. I am still waiting for my first asparagus but the rhubarb is ready to pick. I love stewed rhubarb mixed with SF strawberry Jello! And it IS a vegetable, right?

hello ladies -
I have been MIA...still getting things set up in my new apartment...dealing with inability to find things when I need them...grrr. I hate not knowing where things are, despite all my efforts to avoid this, it always happens when I move.
My blood sugars have been high in the AM...I KNOW it's because I haven't exercised all week. For me I have discovered that is the missing link...I need to exercise at least once a day - sometimes twice in order to ensure those levels go down. It is so hard to get a good balance because one time I exercised, and my blood glucose went up!! Then I found out that if you do not do sustained exercise, then the workout will simply bring your bs up...you need to do it for at least 20 minutes...wow news to me....
The good news is, I am still losing weight....my TOM made me gain about 8 pounds, I lost it all back, so now I have been hovering between 288-291.
Anyways, keep up the good work ladies. Meowee, hope to see you around these parts again soon!
-Mel

Moni, timing is always going to depend on doctor recommencations and what results you get. If that routine is keeping your numbers where you want them and you feel good, then that's it. Trial and error is the norm. One of my co-workers takes hers at 9am and 9pm. That is her work shift, so she takes it with her snack when she gets to work, and has it with her evening snack before she drives home. That's what finally worked for her.

I need to go see about that new girl on the "Counting Carbs" who is a new diabetic trying to go it alone on low carbs and Adkins. Saw her post earlier. She needs some help.
How's Meowee? Missing her and hope she is feeling better.
I am going to get some serious sleep tonight, hopefully. I have K - 3 in the computer lab in the morning. Everyone get a good night sleep and have a good Monday! Kathy:df:

Good morning as we tackle another week.
I forgot my meds last night and was quite pleased to have a 6.2/111 reading this morning. I'm usually a tad lower but that was pretty good with no meds.
Ren, I don't think that's a high BGL. Non diabetics usually test around 6/108. Ask your diabetes educator what it should be for you. As to tests, your doctor will decide - probably cholesterol for sure.
Peony, I hope you can track down that chickie and get her to post in here. Atkins is good but does need some changes for diabetics. If she is a new member she won't be able to send or receive PMs except from MODs so holler if you want me to get her.
Meowee is still on sick leave but did log on once over the weekend. Maybe she'll be back soon.
Happy Monday!

Ruth,
Her name was Claudia12, and she had posted on the Atkins forum, but I noticed it because it said "new diagnosis and having cravings" or the like. if you find her post, see what you think.
Check back in with you later after Dancing with the Stars, on this very crazy day!

Ah, Rosie, it's a neurotic week, and I am just trying to go with the flow. I need to behave, though. I don't want to get too out of control just because I am not paying attention. I have been keeping my hands busy at rehearsals and other waiting times with the baby afghan I am crocheting--it makes it hard to snack!
It was a gorgeous day today, but tomorrow we are back to the rain for a few more days. I didn't think we had moved to Seattle or the tropics. We are already over the month's total for rain.
Have a good Wed. all, talk to you tomorrow.

Yes, it was quiet in here. The move to the new server went well and was much faster than anticipated. The 3FC tickers are missing but will catch up shortly.
It's been a busy few days which is good since the FBGL has been just fine. I still don't know what happened in April when it was running high - it may have been stress from the knee pain. I go to get the HA1C done this afternoon and am hoping for good results i.e. lower or the same which was 6.5 in January.
Have a Happy Hump Day!

Hi everyone! :) I am new here and was just diagnosed with diabetes less than a month ago. I'm still getting used to following the exchange meal plan that my doctor put me on although I guess it's working because my blood sugar is usually around 90-120 when I test it now and I've lost 16 lbs.
How often do you usually test your blood sugar? I've gotten into the habit of doing it several times each day. I have a doctor's appt coming up next weekend so I will follow up with him on what he thinks I should do, but I'm just wondering what's normal for everyone else. :D

Basically, I'm still MIA . . .
The two weeks in Ontario where extremely hectic and stressful. I probably should not have gone -- but, we don't always get to make the 'best for us' choices when family matters intervene.
The trip certainly did nothing to ease my ongoing medical situation which was finally diagnosed as Pneumonia. Since returning, I've had two rounds of two different antibiotics and still no relief in sight. I'm getting weaker and more pain ridden as each day goes by. Afraid I don't spend much time sitting upright let alone on the computer.
Back to the doctor on Tuesday, the 19th and will see what he thinks he'll try next. Personally, I think this must be a viral rather than a bacterial pneumonia so there may not be much to do for it except wait it out and keep the :crossed:
Amazingly enough, the BGL has been doing fairly well, all things considered.
Hope to check in again soon. :grouphug:

Now to survive the sale. Luckily I will be selling the plants and that is far from the bake table. My own stuff won't tempt me but i must stay far away from Kay Dean's famous butter tarts! Pray for me!

Hello,
I have been just diagnosed with Type II diabetes and just started with Metformin twice daily,my FBS is 143.
I have 60lbs to loose and am wondering if anyone is on Weight Watchers and how are you doing with the diabetes and loosing weight? I joined Weight Watchers last Tuesday.
I go to my diabetes class on June 9th, which is the first date they had open. Overall I feel good, but have had terrible sleeping problems and night sweats, probably because I am 56 years young. The doctor thinks my diabetes is a combination of age onset and being overweight. Who knows? All I know is I want to be very diligent to work with this the best way I can. It has been a great shock and I have had no symptoms at all. I also have not gotton my glucose monitor yet as my doctor said to wait until I take the class to get all the info and insurance requirements too.
Please advise with any help for a real newbie at this.
Thanks,
Melanie in Colorado:)

Hi Melsie and welcome! As you I'm a type II and I'm doing WW. Although their program is not specifically for diabetics for me the portion control and discipline has worked just fine. I now have an idea on how to play with the carbohydrates and keep those numbers low (unless I cheat :o). Also including exercise in my lifestyle has helped me get even better numbers, I've been able to loose 10 pounds. I think the only difference is that I'm not taking any medication so I'm not sure if that would affect your weight loss, but don't worry you have come to the right place...The ladies in here are really knowledgeable and kind, I'm sure they would help you.
Chat with you later!:)

Welcome Melanie! :welcome3:We are quite a diverse bunch, that is true, everyone has something that works for them eventually, and we are all always learning. I think that it is a great place to share, so I really like to hear what the new ones find out in class.
Ahhhhh, all is quiet now. No more drama and chaos, the Dance Recital weekend is over. It was wonderful. The 3 and 4 y/o groups are always the hit, but the big girls are always amazing to watch. They keep hinting that they want our tap class to do something at the next recital, but I don't think it will be me up there any time soon. Next will be piano recital sometime in August.
It actually didn't rain today:carrot:

Melanie, I removed your duplicate posts. Metformin is one of the few drugs for diabetes that does not cause weight gain - it's actually supposed to help with loss but so far not for me! :( Like you, I had no symptoms so getting the diagnosis was a great shock. I am keeping my levels well now by watching my diet and focusing on better foods. Your class will tell you more but please stick around here to ask questions.
I know stress can put up FBGL but wonder if bad dreams so the same. I had a doozy between 3 and 5 and woke to a 7.5/135 FBGL reading which is high for me. I had a nearly no carb breakfast. Sometime this is a real roller coaster ride and I must stop trying to figure out the reasons.
Hope we all tap through Monday with good feelings.

I just started Weight Watchers and hoping this is going to be good for me. I don't eat any refined sugars and am trying just with the knowledge that I have picking low glycemic veges and fruit. I picked bulgar and a very low fat bread today for a little higher carb choice. I also exercised for about a 1/2 hour today as a beginner on the treadmil. I actually used 130 calories.
Time will tell me how to do all this with counting points and then carbs. Lots for overwhelming.
Thank you all,

I've been suffering from nightmares since I was a child, when I was pregnant those nightmares were more intense and when I was diagnosed with "gestetional" diabetes and started monitoring my levels exactly the same happened to me: high levels after a nightmare. I asked my doctor and diabetes educator but their answer was no, but honestly I still have the same question. I'll make some research about it, if I find something on that I'll let you know. I hope your nightmares stay away.
Poeny, one of the things that I learned at the nutrition classes was to limit the carbs intake between 55-60 grams per meal and 15-30 grams per snacks. I found that really interesting, when I was diagnosed everyone told me "cut all the sugar" "no sugar" and I did exactly that but high levels would stay around. I've been following what I learned in the nutrition class and it is working perfectly, I'm even enjoying fruits again and sugar in my oatmeal! The educator said that 60 grams of carbs per meal is a good number to start knowing what your body can handle since everyone is different.
Melsie, you have a great attitude and that helps a lot! Wish you the best.:)

Funny, I had nightmares when I was pregnant with my 2nd, but had gestational diabetes with my 1st. I was really terrified about the nightmares because I have had dreams and nightmares periodically through my life that are premonitions. Needless to say, I slept little. Fortunately, the only one that came true was that the 2nd baby was also a boy. I can still predict some things, but fortunately it has been awhile since I've had a nightmare. I must say though, with the stress hormones that are released in a nightmare, it can't be any different than the stress related to illness or surgery, and both of those make blood sugars go up, sometimes dramatically. That is a normal physiological response we can do little about except accept and move on.
Glad the classes are helping you, and thanks for the info, Renacer. It is hard for me to keep at the 45 carbs for meals the dietician put me on sometimes, like pizza night! I'm glad there has been no drastic change. I was shocked as to what had changed in the years since I was a gestational diabetic. There is a lot of diabetes in my grandfather's family, but I still wasn't prepared, or even really cared about it.
It was a gorgeous day here, and again no rain. Hope it stays this way for the next 2 days' school events that are outside. Get to play school nurse once again for the field day, which is always fun--especially giving out hugs to cure the little ones. Hoping to be without any broken bones again this year--the 2 years before that we had several.
Have a great Wednesday all. Kathy:df:

Kathy, I took the liberty of changing your text colour to blue as I just could not read the lime - old eyeballs, I guess.
Renacer, it makes sense that stress from a dream could put up the BGL. I seldom have really bad dreams but this one was a doozy - I lost a friend's child! I hope it wasn't a premonition.
Melanie, when chosing carbs, make them count by selecting whole grain. I love ww bulgar, especially in tabbouleh!
Today is not going to be fun as I am doing the yicky prep for a colonoscopy tomorrow - nothing is wrong, just routine because of my family history. Right now I am enjoying a coffee with sf Irish Cream syrup in it. The rest of the day is clear liquids, Jello and broth. I am allowed beaten egg white and am wondering if I can do something with egg whites and Jello - maybe a mousse? Anyhow I will be monitoring the BGL during the day to be sure it doesn't drop too low because I am allowed hard candies! Woo-hoo!
I'll stop whining now. Have a great Hump Day!

Hi, all. It's sunny here, but not too hot, thank goodness. My bgl was 193 yesterday. Probably because I forgot to take my glucophage at lunch and also have been on an ice cream binge. It's almost gone now, thank goodness. A little bummed out about Gilles not winning DWTS last night. We'll probably see more of him though. Ooh la la!
Also, fell at work on Monday and banged up my knee and twisted my back. Hopefully, no permanent damage has been done. I think I should have crawled into a cave and stayed there, the way this year is going.
Ruth - That doesn't sound too appetizing - egg white and jello. The worst thing about a colonoscopy is the prep. I hope it goes okay.

FBS 123 Down from 143
Good morning all, I am elated that my FBS is finally going down. I am the one who found out from last week I had type II diabetes. Things are going well. I decided not to do Weight Watchers, but to start Nutrisystem D for diabetics. My shipment is on its way. This took a lot of researching, reading everything I could. My sister was on it an has maintained for over a year. She is not diabetic, but has had some health issues and is doing great now.
I go to my diabetic class on the June 9th. I talked to my cousin who is a nutritionist and is excited about what I am doing. I have to get this weight off. I have already lost 4lbs, by just watching my carbs and doing some exercising. I will let you know how I progress.
Thanks for listening,

Sure is quiet in here! I guess the long weekend in the USA is keeping folks busy with family and friends.
I have been remiss in popping in here - the colonoscopy plus a busy weekend sort of screwed me up. The colonoscopy results were great so I can stop worrying about that! The Colyte for the prep worked really well but I gained rather than lost! I couldn't believe it until I read the very high salt content on the stuff. Anyhow the water weight dropped off overnight - where did it go? I know I didn't get up for potty.
I've been doing lots of gardening, both in the village planters and the Fair Grounds and my knees have been behaving pretty well. Yesterday I was up and down the deck stairs too many times as I worked on the patio so they are a bit wonky this morning. That'll go away as I get moving around.
So how are we all surviving the weekend? Saturday was bad for me foodwise but the BGL has been in range so I must be doing something right.

Evening all!
Emily and I were pretty lazy over the holiday-DH was on call all w/e and the holiday, and it was rainy on and off. Beautiful rainbow on Monday evening during a sun shower.
Tomorrow is the last day of school for Emily. Mixed feelings on that one every year. Thursday she is going spelunking with the Girl Scouts, so her summer break starts off with some fun. The boys will be home at the same time for break at the end of June, just when Emily gets back from Camp! Can you spell CHAOS? Good kind of chaos-the boys haven't seen eachother since Christmas.
We are waiting to hear from the bank so we can close on this little temporary house. We can then move, get the repairs done on the big house and get it on the market. I hope we can get it sold without taking a big loss, and get started on the new house. Ooooohh, maybe I can put the boys to work while they are home! Sounds reasonable. We'll see what happens.
Have a great evening and Wednesday. Kathy

Hi Everyone!! :D I hope your weekend is going well.
I am getting very frustrated with my fasting blood sugar levels. Last night I went to bed and my BS was a pretty normal 110 but I woke up and it was 125. Why!?! I have heard of the "dawn effect" but I am not sure what to do about it. :?: All of this monitoring does my head in sometimes. I am doing my best, losing weight, exercising, following my meal plan... but high BS readings still make me feel like I got a bad report card or something!
I was diagnosed about 6 weeks ago and I just got my A1C back and it is 8.6. :( The past few weeks, my BS has been mostly 100-130, with occasional times where it will go up to 150-160. So, the A1C has got to come down eventually, right?
Luckily, they found that my cholesterol levels are (surprisingly!) good. My cholesterol was at 147 and my triglycerides were at 127, which my doctor said was good. So, I guess at least there's that.

Yep . . . I am still alive, but definitely not kicking very hard . . . my doctor is still dithering between Asthma and Pneumonia, or some combination thereof, as being the basis of my problems.
At least he has finally decided to refer me to a Respiratory Disease Specialist and I go to see this new guy on Thursday. I also have an appointment next Monday for a CAT scan. Obviously my constant 'at home cat-scanning ' doesn't do the job.
In the meantime, he, the GP took me off Prednisone, an oral steroid, because it's one of the worst things you can give a diabetic (doubled my BGL levels) and it has so many other side effects as well (however, it was working wonders for the wheezing and coughing after only four or five doses) and put me on Symbicort which is an inhaled steroid, combined with Salbutamol, an inhaled bronchodilator. I do get a tiny bit of wheezing relief from the Salbutamol, but nothing but high blood sugar levels from the Symbicort. Obviously I hope the specialist will find a way to temper the Prednisone so I can keep using it.
Other than that . . . nothing going on in my world. I am thinking of you gang.

June should be a good month with local strawberries coming in and lots of asparagus and rhubarb still available. My garden is still not tilled and planted - too wet - but I am hoping for a good veggie crop later this summer.
I've been a bit more active with outside work and hope to get back into walking this month too. Yes, my knee hurts a lot but it hurts whether I use it or not so.... besides the dogs need exercise aside from chasing each other around the yard.

Hey, HOpe all is well with everyone. I have a quick questions....
I've been taking Metformin ER for about 2 months now and tonight i've felt very nauseated. I dont know if it would be the medication after this long or if it is due to my period. Anyone exp this after being on metformin er for awhile?

MONI, I doubt that it's a side effect of the Metformin after so long. Way back in the dark ages when I got periods, I frequently felt nausea just before the event.
Busy day ahead so I must plan my food. It's way to easy to just grab something when you are flying by! I have to work a Bingo at supper time and must take food so the darned canteen doesn't tempt me. I haven't had fries for over a year and don't intend to break that record with greasy, soggy food!
Have a great Tuesday.

This forum is really helpful. My father suffered from stroke because of diabetes. This motivates me in reading different forums to make me aware more of diabetes.

We have history of diabetis. This is the reason why I'm really cautious on what I eat. My father was paralyzed by this disease.

Hi everyone, hope everyone is having a lovely Saturday. I just wanted to pop in and say I lost my first 10lbs! I am on Nutrisystem D and loving it. My blood sugar has dropped from 143 to 106 since diagnosed May 13th. I am going to my diabetes class on Tuesday and picking up a prescription for my supplies.
I will be sewing all day today, got to finish my new grandbaby little girl's quilt.
Take care and blessings,
Ruthxxx

Whew! I sure hope I get a good reading tomorrow as I have been doing hard physical work for the past three days. It's gardening but I love it despite a lot of lifting and bum knees. When I plant I can't kneel so I bend from the waist. That has to count, right? I am drooling just thinking of fresh tomatoes, beans and cucumbers plus squash in the fall!

Still suffering more or less silently -- the visit to the specialist did not improve things. He is definitely thinking something that includes neither Pneumonia or Asthma. Now I'm just trying to stay calm until after we get the results of the CAT scan (Monday) and the latest test; a Bronchoscopy (Tuesday). Yep, they definitlely like to stick lighted tubes just about anywhere these days.

 and  at Rosey and Meowee. Did not see the scale budge an ounce this morning but the BGL was good. I can't carry on gardening today because of the rain - and more to come! :( Ah well, at least I'll have squash, cukes and tomatoes. Right now I'm fighting the urge to have a nap - the dogs have just settled in on the couch.

My wife also just started Nutri-system D and so far she is enjoying it. I really hope we see some positive results from this! I will update our progress in a week or so!https://tipgnome.com/images/smile8.gif
