Exercise! - 1000 miles in 2009! #2
midwife

In 2008, several of us ran in a 500 miles by Christmas challenge. Some of us got there (and then some---looking at you: Jo, Kitty, & Jenguin!) and some of us reached a different goal (300, thank you very much!).
Now we are starting a new year and have a new goal!
The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step....Are you IN???
This thread is open to everyone--if you are thinking of running 1000 miles by 12/31/2009...or 600....or walking 300...the idea is to move and track your mileage and have some fun along the way!
Good luck to us all!!!!
Go us!! Thread #2. Lets burn through this one as fast as we did the last one!!
Thread 1 can be found here if you want to recheck your mileage:

15.6 today, 8.something yesterday.
I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about the hamstring. I'm up to 10 min run intervals and it held up pretty well today. Icing the bejeezus out of it now. I wanted to roll it first but the kids ran off with my foam roller.

I'm slapping myself for slacking the past 10 days or so. I did get a few miles in since I last logged.
1/30 = .92
1/31 = 3.06
2/3 = 1.45
2/5 = 1.33
2/6 = 1.75
total since last check in = 8.51. I will be outside today enjoying the awesome weather we're supposed to have and making up some mileage!

Diane -- running after drinking any alcohol the night before is pretty exhausting. I ran on New Years day after partying the night before and I was so incredibly dehydrated I wanted to die. Lesson learned lol

I ran on Sunday after having 2 glasses of wine Sat. night. I did the six miles with 2.5 pound hand weights to try and increase the challenge. As soon as I got home, I quickly changed and took my three youngest to a party at Chuck E. Cheese (I'd be happy to never return) and scarfed 3-4 pizza slices and had a cupcake and 1/2 slice cake. Then after the party came home and passed out on our couch for 1 hour!!! had crackers and cheese for dinner.....
don't know exactly why I'm sharing this???....:dizzy:

There is a guy on my running board who keeps wanting someone to wear the garmin while running laps on a moving cruise ship just to see what the route would look like.
Garmin wont be very accurate on something like tennis. It is actually not that good even on a track, the rapid direction changes and stationary times dont work well for it. I left my garmin running attached to my stroller once and it "moved" about a mile in an hour and a half.
I used to take equivalent miles for something like tennis by exertion - does it feel like a fast run over all, a medium run, and then just saying ok 1 hour = 4 miles or something like that (I suck at tennis, for me it would be more like 1 hour = 1 mile).
Let's see -- ran a 5K on Saturday (26:49, not too shabby) and 12 miler on Sunday. That brings me to right about 135 miles so far.

02-11-2009, 08:18 AM
Ha! I'm cracking up picturing the route the Garmin would show on a cruise ship. I wouldn't use it for any real accuracy purposes- just to satisfy my curiosity. I once wore it around the house cleaning up. It spazzed a little but did register about 1/2 a mile.
Got in 2.62 last night. I'm getting bored with the routes around my house.

I agree, it was very stinky to miss the race. My dad ran it and said it was well done. Hopefully they'll do it every year from now on.

Ran my half-marathon on Sunday in 2:06, which is a decently good time for me. FAR better than the last one where I bonked! It was a beautiful day for a run along the beach - sunny, cool, breezy. Then an easy 4.5 mile recovery run yesterday. That brings me to: 182 miles so far this year.
My last half marathon of the "season" is next Sunday. I'm not sure doing two long races on two successive weeks is that great of an idea, but that's just how it worked out. I'm certainly not running it for time, I'm still a little stiff from the last race. I'm going to consider it to be a supported training run and take it slow and easy ....

I'm pretty new here on 3FC. I just found this thread and thought it was a great idea! It's just the kind of motivation I need to keep running in the "off season", which - oddly enough - happens to be summertime for me.
Just ran a 10K race on Sunday in 58:11 (in the snow :)). I took it a little easy and would like to do my next race (in a few weeks) in less than 55...we'll see. Although I've done a half before, I'm more of a 10k girl so I don't think 1000 will happen. I'm going to give myself a more realistic goal of 500 for the year and see how that goes. I'll have to go through my journal to add up what I've done so far this year.
Sorry to ramble on. I'll get to the point...
Sunday - 6.2 miles
Monday - 2 miles
this morning - 5 miles

San Fran half mary sounds like it would be pretty darn fun. It would be nice if they provided you with an elevation profile for the route. Looks like you have 2 half mary routes to choose from also, very cool. I'm sure the scenery is spectacular -- who wouldn't want to run over the Golden Gate? Do you train on hills?

+4 today! Second day back at the park! Yay! walked .5, ran 1, intervals for 2, cooled down with .5 - I'm liking that pattern...
My legs were still a little sore today from Tuesday's run, realized the best thing to stretch them was to warm up and then do some more running! They feel much better now! I didn't get sore much back in January - from watching my stride today I think the sore came from the sprint intervals rather than the running itself... My feet hit down a lot harder during the hi portion...
I'm glad to be back on the road! :)

I have been training for hills, but only on my long run days since the hardest hills I know of are about 4 miles away from where I live. If I run north in the city it's also straight uphill but I haven't worked myself up for that yet haha. According to the website elevation map, it looks like it is about 50% or so uphill. I picked the harder half marathon since it goes across the golden gate bridge. Eitherway I'm really excited! I've never really traveled before and I'm dying to get out of the city:carrot:

I'm not sure I'll be able to run in Venice yet, maybe just something very short due to Venice's unique layout and cobblestone streets, but I do have good runs mapped out for Florence and Rome, as well as the area right near the Cinque Terre (on the coast).
Now I just need to learn how to say, "Pardon my sweatiness, is this the way to the park?" in Italian. :)

Re: hill training. I don't have to go looking for hills as the name of my town is Short Hills. I can't avoid 'em. This morning I needed to cut my run short (aiming for 6 but had time for 5.2) and cut right onto a super steep road. I actually said out loud, "OW, my a$$!!" :p

How are the shoes working out, Shannon?
The shoes have been fine the two runs this week. I'm getting a better handle on lacing them to be loose at the bottom and tighter at the top. The last couple of runs before my surgery my ankles and the tops of my feet got a little tingly, but I also pushed it pretty hard on those runs so might not have been the shoes fault... :) With doing the intervals for the second half of the run this week I have some walking breaks for the feet to settle back down, I'm wondering if I'll see the tingling again when I get back up to running longer distances... Hope not.

I did my final half marathon of my running "season" on Sunday. Since it was only a week since my last one, I ran it purely as a training run, not for speed. I kept it nice and easy and just enjoyed the day. Still finished in a respectable 2:16, a time I would have KILLED for a few years ago! :p
I might do another 5K or two, but that was the last big event until next fall.
Here's my season recap -- since Oct 25:
-- Events: Five half marathons, one 10K, and three 5K’s
-- Records: New personal records for half-marathon and 10K
-- Loot: Nine T-shirts, one hat, 5 finishers medals and one age group trophy (10K)
-- Stats: 81 miles raced in approximately 12 hours and 58 minutes, at an average pace of a little over 9 ½ min miles
-- Calories burned and sense of accomplishment - Priceless! ;)

Ennay, I can feel your disappointment. That sucks.
This is my first day running since sunday. 2 with handweights and a migraine. (And I do not say migraine as in bad headache. I mean real migraine. the first in years. except now that I think about it, I probably had one last month too. ugh.)
it seems like we're losing a lot of people. whats going on? for those who are injured, do you have any tips to avoid injury? i'm getting paranoid!
I'm not injured, but I have been in the past. Here are my strategies to avoid injury and running "down time":
- Don't ramp up mileage too quickly, 10% per week is rule of thumb.
- Get high quality, properly-fitting shoes and replace them every 300-500 miles, just like they say. The cushioning goes way before the outside shows wear.
- stretch, and stretch, and stretch. Everything.
- cross train, especially strength training to balance leg muscles, strengthen muscles/ligaments around your joints, and to strengthen core muscles.
- pay attention to the little aches and pains and take action if they worsen. Change your shoes, change your training program, and take days off if you need to. That may keep the little pains from working into a real injury that will require weeks and months to recover from.
The most common cause of injury is trying to do too much, too soon. That's exactly what happened to me when I first started running as a 40plus year old female -- I pushed too many miles, too quickly, and ended up with a mild case of hip bursitis, a several week layoff and physical therapy. Fortunately it resolved quickly and I was able to learn from that and build up more sanely, and I haven't had any real problems since.
But, the unfortunate fact is that, even when you try to do everything right, sometimes you still get injured. That sucks, but everyone is different. For some, the high impact pounding is just a bit much for their body to handle.
Oh, and I'm at 204.6 miles year to date!

it seems like we're losing a lot of people. whats going on? for those who are injured, do you have any tips to avoid injury? i'm getting paranoid!
Well in my case...
1)if you wake up one morning and scratch the back of your leg and think "wow! My legs are getting really toned" (when normally they have a nice cottage cheesy cushy fat layer) that is a tight ball of muscle left over from your weights workout the day before.
2) If after your warmup that tight ball of muscle still FEELS like a tight ball of muscle, dont feel that just because you are the one who is coaching the other girls in the workout today you are **** bound and obligated to finished the 6 x 800 workout in freezing cold weather.
3)And certainly when you are running the 800's and your brain is saying "this is STUPID my left leg feels really really tight" refer to #2 again. Stop. Dont push on because you convinced the others to do 800's and you are trying to coach one girl on how to pace an 800.
So in other words. Listen to your freaking body and dont get caught up in what you are "supposed" to do that day.

I did 4.5 miles this morning and 2 yesterday on the treadmill. Which is like running through, uh, muck for me. 03-12-2009, 06:25 PM
If you really want to get a home treadmill (and you're sure you're going to use it! v. important!) go for QUALITY. A crappy treadmill is just a waste of time, space, and money. I'm not sure what the brand at my gym is -- I'll check the name next time I'm in there. But you want adjustable speeds (newer models have preprogrammed buttons so that you can hit to go directly to 4mph or 6mph, for instance) and adjustable incline. Lots of treadmills have number pads where you can just "dial" what speed you want to go, which is also good (instead of having to hit the up/down buttons over and over again). You need something solid!

I have an elliptical trainer and a stationary bike now, and they get a lot of use, so I'm pretty sure I would actually use the treadmill. DH would probably just hang stuff on it. :) I went cheap with my first elliptical and it broke after three months, so I totally learned my lesson on picking out equipment... Thanks for the info Diane! I've never actually been on a treadmill, so I know nothing about them. At least I had been on an elliptical when I picked it out, so wasn't as intimidated. Treadmill is all new...

Midwife -- it was sooo cold near the water!! Probably around -20, I couldn't handle it which is why I slowly made my way back north lol. And yes Toronto is quite exotic! It's the most multicultural city in the world so we have "little ___" everything and multiple china towns. I think about 40-50% of Torontonians are immigrants, its the most amazing thing, I know people from all over the world!
Shannon - I personally think the treadmill is brutally boring. I can never tell whether I'm tired or just bored and can never go over 4 miles. Maybe if you had a tv to watch it might help.

I forgot to post here yesterday when I posted my Blarney Stone 5k results!
6.5 miles yesterday! Finally made it past the 5 mile mark! (The .5 is really just extra because it is the distance I have to walk from overflow parking to the park itself... :) )

4.66. I'm having some intense shin splints so I've only been doing short runs:(. But I've been 30 minutes on the bike after running to try and compensate. I'm so paranoid about losing my edge!
I'm thinking of doing a full marathon in September, what do you ladies think?

6.5 miles again today! I love spring in the park!
ETA: I think one of my problems with my shoes is actually my socks.... I wore what I thought were my good socks Tuesday for the first time post surgery (they got put in the wrong drawer, just found them) and tingly feet... Went back to the other socks today, no tingly... do they make thin, comfy running socks? These are irritating my feets a little...

7.79 miles for me today, I'm really getting the hang of rest days and not pushing my self too hard. My foot is still holding up well.
SM177: I think a fall marathon is a great idea, you have a solid running base and a lot of time to complete a training program. Go for it!!!

Welcome back, Jo! How was the trip? Where did you run? Details!!
sm, I'm certain you could work up to a marathon with your running base. Take care of those shin splints. Ice them. Make sure you are stretching and build pretibial strength. My dd's trainer (and podiatrist) recommended resisted toe lifts. Take a bucket and fill it with water a bit. Sit down (somewhere high like a counter) and hang the bucket over your instep. Raise and lower your toes. Do a bunch and repeat with the other foot.

midwife - thanks for the adivce, i will try that! i'm so paranoid these shin splints will get worse, i'm almost losing sleep over it :?:
Jackie - thanks for the encouragment! i think i'm gonna register! also, i was talking to someone in one of my classes and he told me he used to have what you have PF (i think it was?). he said he slowly recovered from it and didn't need any injections or anything, and now he's doing the full marathon in 3:05. i thought of you when he was telling me this, anyways you seem to be recovering nicely! how many days are you running now?

So much for taking it easy, tonight I craved running more than chocolate cake so I did another 9.29 miles.
SM177: Thats a motivating story, I hope one day I'll be fully recovered. Lately, I've been so much more positive about dealing with PF. I took last week off completely just to ice and make sure resuming running hadn't caused any damage. This week I've run 25+ miles in 3 days; 17 of them today. I'll see how I feel tomorrow. I'm really trying to get 80 miles in for this month.

SM177: I know I'm bad, my foot feels good and I get so addicted its so hard to quit. The worst is I really thought I had this moderation thing down; I was especially impressed that I took a whole week off just to give myself a rest when I felt good enough to run. On a positive note, I'm not doing any other type of high impact cardio (no step, boot camp classes, etc) so technically my foot is not being abused as much plus I now run on an even surface and have slowed my pace quite a bit. I live in fear of a PF flare up but I wonder if I'll have the discipline to avoid one.

Thurs:3 miles;
Fri:3.25;
Sat:3.5;
Sun:3;
Mon:3.5
That means that for 2009 I need 940.75 miles to hit 1000. I need more than 100 miles each month to hit that because I started late, but it's just a little extra challenge.

Probably silly question - I have been absolutely starving on the days after I run. Is that normal? My HRM says I'm burning in the 700-900 calorie range depending on the length and intensity of the run, so I would guess the starving makes sense! I've been trying to boost the protein so I don't snack, any other suggestions? I ate Go Lean at 3, a protein bar at 4:45 and am starving again now!

4.73 miles for me. I felt so good, much less shin splint pain. It's amazing what running without pain feels like after running with pain for 2 weeks - it's like I was just gliding along! On the other hand the wind was giving me a real bargain for my money and it was making me angry almost hhahah:carrot:

I took last week off after completing my first 10K run with my DH, and my program was complete.
Started yesterday, doing a half marathon plan and yesterday's run was 3 miles. Taking that week off really affected how I felt (terrible) I don't think I'll be doing that again. Today's run 4 miles.

River -- It may not be the layoff so much - your muscles may still be tired out after your first 10K, too. It's a very temporary phenomenon, you'll bounce back before you know it!

Jackie -- I can't really say exactly what it was. I stopped dieting and just kind of eating whatever but within reason. I also started walking a lot more, probably 5-10 miles more a week. Overall I'm kind of confused about why it happened, I hate not being able to pinpoint what did it. I might go back to counting calories because I'm realizing this last 10 pounds really has to go:(. Do you still want to lose weight?

5.51 miles this morning.
SM177: I do want to get down to 115 just because that was my revised goal although I'm not sure if it'll make that much of a difference. I guess I'm concerned that if I'm not losing then I'm gaining and as long as I keep "dieting" then I won't go back to what I used to be.

7.76 miles for me, I reallllly wanted to do a long run but my body isn't allowing me, I'm just in so much pain and I think I'll have to take a few days off. Tonight I went to a quieter area of the city and turned off my music and just listened to my feet hitting the pavement, it felt amazing!
