We are about Fitness and Quality of Life after 50...
We are about Fun and Friendship after 50...
We are the Golden Girls...

There is Value in us
There is Power in us
There is Wisdom in us
And Laughter....
We are a rainbow of unique wonders,
There is love in us.
(poem by Dorothy Holmes)

Tell us a little about your life, family and goals. What keeps you motivated? What is the best thing that's happened to you since you passed the 50 mark?
Friends laugh, cry and stand by each other, we'll be that to you!

Happy February,

My Southern cousins went back home yesterday. I only gained 2.5 lbs while they were here. I actually consider that a success! Their happiest moment was when it snowed. They went outside at midnight to try to make a snowman & got up at 5 am to make snow angels (before the snow changed to rain). I took them to Philadelphia, New Hope, and Hershey in the 3 days they were here. The reunion was a success. They had the cameras, so when they send me photos, I'll post.

OK - back to reality. My sister stayed with me last night. Maybe we'll go to the gym when she wakes up. In any case, I'm back to eating right today. Tried on my Spring Pants Challenge pants this morning. Have about an inch and a half to go until they button/snap.

Good Morning . . .

Another month -- another fresh start.

We got a little fresh snow overnight and the sun was a bit slow in showing his face this morning and has been coming and going ever since. Oh well.

Morning all...Just fast check in. Thank you for only sending chilly weather not COLD! Say that's coming later this week. Off to Home Depot to buy dirt and then to Publix for groceries. Never before moving to Florida did we buy dirt and don't mean potting soil. But just dirt. Have to keep holes filled or the rain makes pot holes and pot holes become sink holes and sink holes can eat your house......bye....Karen3

Hello all,

Happy Sunday ~ Happy February :)

Had an interesting start to my day. Opened the blinds in the family room and saw an armadillo in the back yard. I had seen them before, but never up that close. Woke my husband up to see too and got a couple pictures. Apparently it lives under our deck.

We have had fun over the years getting to see different creatures in our yard and getting pictures of them. In North Carolina we had some deer come right up in our yard (we lived in the city), and a big owl visited our trees. Also a possum was in a tree in our yard.

Up in Maine, we got to see a beaver swim by and loons on the lake. A moose came out of the woods into our yard. That was neat, but we weren't fast enough with the camera that time.

My parents lived in Ohio and came to visit us in Maine every year. Dad wanted desperatly to see a moose. We would go on drives along the roads where moose were often seen, but they never were there when we took Dad for a ride. It became a running joke about the lack of moose when dad was in Maine. Of course when that moose came in the yard, the kids had to call grandpa right up and tell him about it.

When I told my parents this morning about the armadillo, dad said he hoped to get to see it when he comes to visit, but that it would probably end up being just like the moose and he would never get to see it.

I am hopeful that I am back on the right track. Down 3 pounds. Making small changes. First thing ~ I am resisting buying snacks on the way home from work. My knees are feeling somewhat better (though after going up the front steps at my daughter's house yesterday, they are hurting again ~ thankfully not as bad as a couple weeks ago) so I am hoping to start walking for exercise again. Even if it is a little bit at a time ~ it is more than none at all

Hope you all are having a good weekend.

Take care

Any chance you can post a pic of the armadillo?

If that were me, I'd be afraid to leave the house!

Scheduled for a blood test this morning, so I can't have my regular coffee and protein bar before the gym. Oh well, worse things have happened to nicer people.

I let myself have a "freebie" meal once a week to keep from feeling deprived. So Saturday evening went for Mexican. It was good. I was bad. I behaved on Sunday. My weight is up a whole pound this morning. Gotta get back on track.

Good morning everyone, and Happy February:

Here's hoping we all reach our monthly goal! January was slow going for me; I only lost four pounds. In hopes of finding inspiration and encouragement I did join a local "Biggest Loser" type of challenge, and this will be our third week. There's fifteen of us and we each put up ten dollars. Weigh in every Monday evening, which of course this Monday will probably hurt my weight loss, as I had a slice of pizza last night during the SuperBowl game and pizza makes me retain fluids. Not to mention the cheese and pepperoni sticks to my thighs. :(

I want to re-double my exercise habits this month and try to fit in at least thirty minutes each day rather than the three times a week that I have been doing. Mostly I need to jump-start my metabolism and if anyone has any ideas that would help, please share them with me! At this time in my life I have the metabolism of a speed bump. Not good!

Have a great day, folks -

Good Morning!
Sea...I've got something setting on my counter that keeps calling my name, Guatemalian sweet breads. There was an article about the new mall shop in the paper and I had to go check them out, I shouldn't have. These sweet breads are so delicious and I purchased two for hubby and two for me. I don't have a clue how many calories and I don't count calories on Sundays. But I only ate one yesterday, If I put it in the freezer I'll think about it all day. If I do eat it today, how many calories should I record. The lady that makes them said it doesn't have much butter or sugar in them.
Linda...It's going to be May 1st before we get rid of all our snow, I feel sorry for all the critters/deer who can't find food. We have two squirrel seats attached to a tree and those greedy squirrels eat the center out of each kernel and throw the rest away. I wish the deer would find the thrown kernels but it's probably too close the the house.
Glynn... I'd love to see the pictures too, what do they eat?
Lynn...I hate when I have my cholesterol checked, no coffee. That's worse than cleaning toilets. You have my sympathy!
Farmgal... What weight reduction plan are you on? If we know your eating pattern/life style that would help.
if anyone has any ideas that would help, please share them with me! At this time in my life I have the metabolism of a speed bump. Not good!

Hi Karen3, Karen31, Isabella, Fluffy,Lily, I know I'm missing someone?
Rats.........I shouldn't have talked about that darn sweet bread, I'm eating it. On that note I'll say goodbye.

Here are a couple pics of the armadillo

The info I read about them said they are omnivores and eat bugs, plants, fruit and vertebrates.

Lynn ~ I felt more scared of the racoons that came up on the deck. There was a mama and a couple little ones ~ the big one looked bold and scary.

Glynne...cute little fellow!
I have a 'Maxine' desktop calendar, I see a new Maxine joke daily.
The jokes usually respond to whatever is going on nationally and today's was about groundhog day.

Maxine says: I don't care how many weeks of winter are left...I just don't want that groundhog doing his business on my lawn!

My laptop died last night but will be resurrected in about 3-4 weeks. The plug receptical for the power pack broke and the battery went dead. They don't service the computer at the shop because they send them back to the manufacturer. Fortunately, we purchased an extended warrenty on this one. I need a new screen also as the hinges have broken (for the second time) so I'll get everything done at once. The one bad thing is that it will take 3 to 4 weeks to get it back. I'm using DS's right now so I won't have use of this like my own. So if you don't hear from me for a few days at a time it's because I'm not able to get to a computer when I needed to.

Gayle, those picutres are so awesome. The closest I ever came to an armadillo was the chocolates called almondillos.

I've got to check in with fitday and a few other forums here at 3FC while I have access to this computer.

Have a great evening.

PS: Everything was making shadows today so we're doomed to more winter.

Bobbi -- Sounds delicious. I have my high meal each week a dinner out. I don't count the calories on that meal at all. Having it around the house would be a double whammy for me. If it is here, I eat it. I also get a kind of nervous about how fattening something really is. That leaves me preferring either boxed meals, with the calorie count on the pkg., or basic simple foods that I can look up. If something is fattening I want to know how much I should enjoy it! LOL. Knowing I cannot stay low cal all the time is the major reason I allow myself one cheat meal a week to avoid stressing over it. I admit I obsess; but I try not to stress. My current weight is enough stress already. Having my free day while dh is home is the easiest way to stay on track the rest of the time since I know that doing/going with him often means I get off my weekday plan. I find it is better to work with that so that I get right back OP, instead of giving up because I had two bites or a meal that is not typically diet. It really helps my attitude and I enjoy the treats I do eat all the more. It keeps me moving forward.

Stay strong, Isabella. May you be back on your own computer quickly.

I'm hanging in there. When I left my dear laptop at the shop to be shipped away I kissed it lovinly before I left. DS has left his laptop in the living room so we can use it. He has another one that he uses more often as this one is on the way out too. He even set up an account for us so we won't have to invade his stuff.

I also eat whatever I want once a week. Some days are better than others and most of those days I don't track the calories. I do, however, try to stay moderate in my indulgences but sometimes....

I was up way too late last night. I finished making the table centerpieces for DS's wedding and a bigger centerpiece for the gift table. I just have to put ribbon around the basket handles and tie bows where the handles join the basket but I don't have the ribbon yet. I have to go to the city to get that at a craft or fabric store. Can't get anything I want around here.

Must go get breakfast. Catch you when I can.

Morning all.....I wrote a long note last night and the storm ate it. Just found out that when cable goes out so does telephone and internet. Came back hours later. Worst was I saw it happening and hit save a second too late...

They say we are going get super cold tonight. Down in teens for awhile. It is dangerous for many people down here as they have no real heat source. Did that storm start up the east coast as a Nor'easter?

Had another week of just a pound loss....I can't exercise well right now. My knee is creaky and afraid to ride my bike.

Bobbi...what are sweet breads? Must tell you that growing up sweet breads back home were hog brains that you got when you butched the pig. Sauteed in a ton of butter....when I first read your note my jaw dropped for a second. The sugar finally registered.

Lynn...hope your bloodwork comes back perfect.

2 of my bridge partners are away this week and I don't have a game again until Friday. Have a bunch of odds and ends to catch up with. So off with the list...Karen3

Hi
Everyone, It's still cold and white here. I think it snows a little every day. At least they are keeping the roads pretty clear. I know my little dog would like to be walked more, but there is so much salt on the side walks i don't like taking him out.

Gayle, First time I've seen one of those "creatures".

I don't have a cheat day. I will have a cheat day occasionally when my weight is back in line. I have gained about 5 pounds and have to take it back off! Untill then, I stay within my limits. I don't want to diet all week and mess up the weight loss with one huge cheat! Not worth it to me. I do understand that it's what keeps some ging, and that's fine. We are all different, and what ever it takes.

Lynn, I laughed at your cousins marvel over the snow. We don't quite "get" why some people are so thrilled at thing we take for granted. My niece had exchanged students at her house last summer. Her favorite thing was clouds. She would go out and stare at them for hours! She was from China and there is so much smog there that you never see the sky, so clouds and stars were new to her.

Karen3, I have TV, phone and net all together also. It went out for about an hour this morning. Hopefully we will not have a problem like lots of people in Michigan and Ky. are having with electricity.

Here's a little definition of Sweetbreads for your utter enjoyment . . . hope it doesn't make you feel differently about your little treat, Bobbi . . .

For those who feel they haven't been getting enough thymus gland or pancreas in their diets, have we got a culinary delicacy for you! Sweetbreads are the thymus glands and/or pancreas of calves, lambs and piglets under one year old. These glands are classified as offal in culinary circles, along with other parts such as gizzards and intestines. Unlike other members of the offal family, however, sweetbreads are considered a delicacy among those familiar with haute cuisine. Sweetbreads can be prepared in a number of ways, from sauteeing to deep frying, although the steps between the butcher shop and the table can be tricky and time-consuming.

There are two separate glands which fall under the category of sweetbreads, the thymus and the pancreas. The thymus gland is located in the young animal's neck and is primarily responsible for excreting protective t-cells as part of the immunity system. Thymus sweetbreads are more irregular in shape than pancreas sweetbreads, and are also considered to be less flavorful. For this reason, most thymus sweetbreads are less expensive than their pancreatic counterparts.

The pancreas varieties of sweetbreads are located near the animal's stomach, and produce insulin and other digestive enzymes. Pancreas sweetbreads are generally larger and rounder in shape than thymus sweetbreads. Between the two varieties, the pancreas sweetbreads of veal calves are the most sought after by connoisseurs.

Both the thymus and pancreas forms of sweetbreads must be properly prepared before they can be cooked. Raw sweetbreads often have a layer of fat and a sinewy outer membrane which must be peeled away first. Many professional chefs recommend soaking the sweetbreads in an acidic bath made from water and an acidic liquid such as vinegar or wine. The sweetbreads should be soaked in this bath for several hours, and the water should be changed out several times. This process is said to make the membrane easier to remove and also drain off any remaining enzymes and blood. Ideally, sweetbreads should be white or slightly pink in color. The older the animal, the redder the sweetbreads.

Once the sweetbreads have been peeled, deveined and washed, they can be blanched for a short time to reduce later cooking time, or they can be breaded and deep fried immediately. Barbecuing and grilling are also popular ways to prepare sweetbreads. The taste of sweetbreads is said to be reminiscent of bacon, although some say the main attraction of sweetbreads is the silky texture, not necessarily the flavor.

While sweetbreads may be difficult to find on many American menus, they are popular in other countries, most notably Turkey and Argentina. Sweetbreads are frequently barbecued or seared over open grills in those countries. Sweetbreads can be specially ordered in butcher shops, but it pays to know which variety you may prefer or are able to afford. Thymus sweetbreads are less expensive than pancreas sweetbreads, but they may be less flavorful. It is important to prepare sweetbreads within 24 hours of purchase, and avoid buying sweetbreads which are deep red in color.

I've heard of meat sweetbreads. I think I read about them in an old cookbook at one time or another. Never knew why they were given that name though. Sweet bread around here is a loaf of molasses sweetened raisin bread often spiced with cinnamon and/or cloves. Now I want raisin bread.

Didn't get in my run today but I'll get on my bike this evening while I watch tv. Keeps me from getting bored.

Good Morning Gals!
I posted a Citrus Cheesecake on our recipe site, I haven't made it yet. I posted it in the original recipe but it can be tweaked with Splenda Brown sugar, all egg whites, skim milk, etc. One of the reviews said she squeezed the whole lemon and added that too. I will probably eliminate the graham cracker crust. If anyone makes this, let me know how it turns out.
We have shopping to do today and I better get my housework finished. Did anyone see the biggest loser last night. I'd like to choke Joelle and Aubrey.

Evening all.....Boy is everyone hunkerin down here. Hard freeze tonight. My yard looks like Halloween with the citrus trees wrapped in sheets. Picked the last of the myers lemons so just some flowering plants to get hit. I still have the Mexican heather that I planted 9 years ago. In Md that was an annual. Guess I will be planting it again.

I recaulked all around the tub and bathroom sink. Took me 2 days. First day to get all the old stuff out and today put in the new caulk. It comes in a can like whipped cream now with a long tube so was easy to get over the faucets. Fired my cleaning girl and now facing the dread vaccum. I hate to vaccum and iron. Guess all those years of ironing white uniforms has done me in. Looked a Roombas and read the reviews. Seems that Roomba has a thing for queen anne legged chairs and trys to doggy them. sighhhh Since I have 4 queen anne chairs guess Rommba would just go crazy. Can't win.

I laughed out loud over all the sweetbread stories. Sorry Bobbi but it did surprise me. Thank you for the happy giggle!

Aubrey??? was she the yellow team whiner? Or the pink team girl? Terrible with names! The man that had the GI surgery with the young son. I couldn't believe he could keep going over that pipe. That young man is about the same age as the kid they sent home last week and this kid wants to be there so bad. He is good to his dad too.....ahhhh how did I get hooked on this show, too. When been counting the days until Survivor and realized I'll be away at Sarasota tournament when first show airs...darn!

OMG....just told DH about Roomba and chairs and he suggested saving tin cans and putting the chair legs in the cans.

MMMMMM...off to check pantry for tin cans....Karen3

Aubrey and Mandi were the two dark haired sisters in the yellow T-Shirts. Mandi stayed at the ranch and Aubrey went home. She's a mom of 4 kids and was suppose to be dieting and going to the gym everyday. When she arrived at the ranch and weighed in, she had only lost 2 pounds for the whole month. When asked about it she said she spent 4 hours a day at the gym. BOLONEY! If we spent every day at the gym for 4 hours a day, we'd lose lots of weight. She must have eaten everything under the sun. What ticked me off is how she criticized Joelle for not losing anything, she is a hypocrite.

Hello everyone. School was called off this morning on reports that the storm would start sometime this morning. It's 11 am and there's not a flake of snow falling yet. Schools are closing out on the Avalon (400k east of where I live) for the afternoon because the storm has started there. We've got a blizzard warning for here but as I said not a speck of snow yet. It rained all day Tuesday and yesterday there was slush up to your knees in places and then it froze. My driveway is like a very bumpy skating rink.

I'm having issues with the chocolate chip cookies I made yesterday. I was making them to make sure they turned out OK for the wedding. DS and his finance are putting little chocolate chip cookies in fancy bags for their wedding favors. They turned out very good. I tested them at least 5 times yesterday and twice today...sigh...I haven't gone over my calories but I've sure cut down the amount of food I could have eaten. Must drink more water.

Bobbi that cheese cake recipe looks delicious but we can't get fat free cream cheese where I live. We can get the fat reduced. My friend's daughter had key lime cheese cake for her wedding cake a few years ago and my was that good. That' what that one you posted reminded me of.

Must go get dinner ready. Catch you later.

Good Morning!
Meowee and Isabella, just think of all the wonderful exercise you'll be getting plus all that fresh air. I love shoveling snow!
I'm taking a poll on Vitamin D and Ginkgo Biloba. How many of you take Vitamin D and Ginkgo? I take a Caltrate 600+D plus every morning and a Ginkgo Biloba too. My mom died from Alzheimers and I try to take supplements to ward it off. Whether it's going to help me, I don't know. Only time will tell plus I'm hoping they'll find a cure for it soon.

Vitamin D for Mental Sharpness
If you want to keep your wits about you as you get older, make sure that you’re getting enough vitamin D now. Lower blood levels of vitamin D may increase the chance of mental slippage among seniors, according to a study from a research team at England’s Cambridge University. The investigators checked vitamin D (http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART02812/vitamin-d) levels and cognitive impairment among 1,766 persons 65 and older. They found that 212 patients (12 percent of the total) were cognitively impaired and that those who had the highest levels of vitamin D were least likely to have cognitive impairment. Participants whose vitamin D levels were lowest were more than twice as likely to have cognitive impairment. The researchers weren’t sure exactly how vitamin D protects the brain but noted growing evidence “for previously unsuspected roles for vitamin D in brain development and neuroprotection.” We don’t know yet whether vitamin D supplements can help seniors avoid cognitive impairment, but the researchers noted that the skin’s ability to synthesize vitamin D in response to sun exposure diminishes with age. The study was published online December 10, 2008 in the Journal of Geriatric Psychology and Neurology

I tested them at least 5 times yesterday and twice today...sigh...I haven't gone over my calories but I've sure cut down the amount of food I could have eaten. Must drink more water.

Throw out those cookies, give them away, or, at least, freeze them. No one can be expected to stay away from homemade chocolate chip cookies!

Good Morning Everyone,

I'm going to brave the cold today and go down to meet my friend in South Jersey for scrapbooking.

Check back later,

Lynn

Ooops - my friend isn't feeling good so no scrapbooking today. Planning to meet my North Jersey friend for lunch and a movie.

Lynn, I'd be literally thrown out if I throw out the cookies, ha, ha. DS, DH and mom have been chowing down on them and there's not many left now. I think I've finished with them.

I take a 1000 IU Vitamin D tablet every day plus I get another 200 in the multi-vitamin. I also take a 650 mg Calcium with another 200 IU of Vitamin D. Canadians are notoriously lacking in Vitamin D. Even in the summer most of us don't get enough. DH and I started taking it last year and he says he's not as sluggish in the winter as he used to be.

I don't shovel. At least it's not one of those usual activities I do. Someone has to be inside with mom so DH and DS have the shoveling duty. Every now and then I help out if someone else is in the house.

It's still not snowing here. Maybe the storm will go around us. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one.

Good Morning, Everyone,
Yesterday, I saw Frost Nixon. That was quite a movie!
Today, I'm going to visit an ex-neighbor who was committed to a nursing home last month for altzheimers. Then, later this afternoon, I'm going to see my Little Sister and the baby.

I hit 154 this morning. Still up from my LOW weight of 145.8, but, at least, headed in the right direction.

Hi Sea,

Weight loss journey -
1st 10 pounds - March 15, 2007 - June 15, 2007 (3 months)
2nd 10 pounds - June 15, 2007 - September 20, 2007 (3 months)
3rd 10 pounds - Sept 20, 2007 - February 20, 2008 (5 months)
4th 10 pounds - Feb 20 2008 - ?

Lowest weight this journey - 145.8

I started this journey almost 2 years ago. Took me about a year to lose the first 30 pounds. I've been fooling around in the 150's for the past year. I'm determined to get to 140 by this summer.

If I could give one piece of advice it is - stay positive & don't give up. We all have plenty of setbacks. So what! The key is to get back on the right path asap.

Morning all....Supposed to warm up today and even warmer tomorrow, but if we don't get some clouds I can't see warm tonight. Started to pack for trip and found I had filed my packing list from last year. After all these years I finally figured out that I basically take the same stuff so same list works. DAH!

Last year I worried about staying OP away from home and the only problem I had was eating enough. Missed most of my dinners down there. And lunch was barely anything....so this time am taking vegies and other portable finger foods. Think will take some SB bars too.

Have to cook a storm so DH and Dash have meals. Leave them stuff Dh loves and I don't enjoy...like my world famous meatloaf! Ugh....my mama made the nastiest meatloaf and to this day I can't swallow even a taste of meatloaf. She used big hunks of bread that soaked up the grease ...brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Think I'll take some of DH's instant low sugar oatmeal. Not the best OP but would cover breakfast better than begal the motel offers.

Did I tell you what happened with the one gal on our team. Bob called her in Minn this Fall to ask if she would play. We did not know she was in the hospital with multiple major surgeries and that her kids had been called home to say goodbye! Her husband told her about the call and she looked up and said tell him I'll be ready. So she got better and is playing!!!!! She says that that was the moment she decided to live.....phew..... We are not going to play for the win but to celebrate Judy's Life! Just telling this story has me in tears again. I will love being Captain this time.

Boy, you can tell my life revolves around the bridge table. We had 30 tables yesterday. All time club record. Am directing the 20th.....so better start thinking about enough snacks for a horde. Saw the Pillsbury bakeoff the other night and guy won his section with salmon/presto wrapped in little pieces of pie crust.....have to think of something like that....be interesting.

I love my new hearing aid....It is so comfortable that I have to remember to take it out at bedtime. Did not realize that the old ones felt like someone had their thumb in my ear until now.

Our poor friends the snowbirds who decided to stay North this Winter are having a tough time with Feb cabin fever. They have a long history of dumb choises, but this is probably one of their stupiest ones. Imagine having a place in South Fl and staying up in NJ all Winter. They rented their house out so they can't come down until the end of March.

Boy this turned into a long note....Off to pack.....Karen3

Hi everyone. Yesterday was a total write-off. I baked again. Made brownies from a mix and had to doctor them up with orange zest and juice and did the same with the frosting. My, they were good. Fortunately, I cut them in 36 pieces for the 9-inch pan so at least the portions were small. And chocolate is not one of my trigger foods. I was just enjoying them, not binging. Didn't get in any exercise, either but I was really busy doing something. Can't even remember what I was doing now. Ha, ha. Someone will soon be visiting me in a nursing home. Today I've been eating much better.

DH and his siblings and mother have gone to the hospital to be with his father who is having surgery as I type. His heart is weak and the doctor couldn't guarentee his safe return from the operating room. It's his gall bladder that they're removing. He's been having attacks for weeks now and it could not be put off any longer. So I'm just waiting to hear how things are going.

We have a beautiful sunny day here but quite cold. The sun is pouring in through the patio door windows and it seems like it's summer until I look out the window.

Where is everyone today? It's actually raining in Minnesota, maybe the snow bank behind our house will melt. It's as tall as me! Since we have dirt fields all around us, the top of the snow is dark grey and ugly. I'll be glad to see that dissapear.
Isabella...how's FIL?
Lynn...You're really attacking those calories, good for you. I do believe you'll meet your goal this month. I couldn't find fresh blueberries yesterday for the cheesecake dessert and I couldn't buy the frozen because I wasn't going right home. Yesterday is visiting day for us, MIL was 'out in outer space'. She thought her husband has been having an affair the last 6 months. We couldn't convince her that he's been dead for 20 years. Gosh, I think I'd rather die of a fatal heart attack than have alzheimers or dementia. How awful to worry about an unfaithful husband, not that he was but she's always been the jealous type. I didn't mean to be so depressing this morning, I have to meet her at doctors this afternoon for another appointment. I better get going, get my exercise in.
Have a sunny day and write down every morsel you eat!:comp:

Hello everyone. I've been busy sewing wedding ties and pocket puffs for DS. I finished them this morning and have them packed away for this summer's festivities.

FIL is still hanging on. He came through surgery fine but Saturday night/Sunday morning he had a mild heart attack and his blood pressure dropped. He's on a ventilator, and taking morphine and all the other medications needed. Tomorrow the doctor is going to try and take him off the ventilator to see if he can breathe on his own. But it's still touch and go because his heart is so weak. Thank you for your prayers and kind thoughts towards the family and FIL.

The weekend was a total write off food wise but I'm back on track today. I did get in my biking though on Sunday and also today.

I'm struggling a bit, because my scale is getting real stubborn, though I've been very good, and I'm journalling and exercising. I'm hoping that is at least partly just from sodium intake and that the fat is moving off. But, on the good side, this morning my blood sugar was exactly where the drs. want it: 98 !!! I don't think it's been this low in more than a year.

Good Morning!
Hi Rosey, nice to hear from you.
Sea...platueas are common in weight loss. Last October was like that for me, I never cheated and kept within my calories, kept my exercising up. The scale stayed the same for 11 days, I'd drop 1-2 pounds then stay the same for another 11 days. It was very frustrating. But looking at the big picture, it'll all work out in the end.
I have bills to pay this morning and more roll-ups to make so I better get busy. Every fall I make/freeze tons of sugar free applesauce and it's too much for us to eat. This month I decided to try making fruit roll-ups, my daughter told me to put some cherry kool-ade in some batches. I did plus a little Stevia and they are really delicious.
I have since added grape, strawberry and blue berry. Next fall I'm going to make batches of roll-ups right away instead of freezing it all. Have a great day everyone.

Hello everyone. I sure do miss my laptop. I'm using DS's but it's not the best and it keeps closing down on me.

Bobbie to answer your question: YES!!! My house is often in a messy state. Actually it's hardly ever not messy. Ha, ha. I've got to keep busy doing something or other because I can't come and go as I please and I can't seem to just sit and watch tv or read a book. My friend phoned me today and asked if I could come to the church for a few hours to help her do work in the free clothing store and I could go as DS is not working right now. While we were working she said that she phoned me because she figured I'd like to get out of the house. It was actually a slow day so we poked around in the kitchen and cleaned up a bit. We went through all the old plastic table cloths and separated them into "good" and "drop cloth" piles. I've been trying to get that done for a while so I was pleased to have gone to the church today.

I'm working on the little wedding favor bags now. Last night I finished gluing the first 50 in yellow paper. They need to have ribbon handles attached and a little flower glued to the front to be finished. I started the next 50 in blue and got a grand total of 3 done. I'll do a few every day or so until they are finished. I have a very long list of things that I have to do before that wedding takes place.

Sea, don't get discouraged. If you are keeping on plan eventually you'll see the pounds drop off. Sometimes our bodies like to cling to that old fat but if you're not feeding it more than it needs off it comes.

Gayle, congrats on getting those 7 pounds gone. I have half a pound to go and I'll be at pre-Christmas weight...sigh...so fast to go on and so slow to come off.

I shovelled snow today. Mark that on your calendars. I took the shovel and cleaned off the back deck. The snow was really piled up high on one side and we're supposed to get more snow this week. I believe I might feel a few muscles in my back tomorrow telling me I used them more strenuously than normal. :D

Take care and I'll catch you all later.

My Ex-SIL had a cleaning lady and she did the same thing, she cleaned before the cleaning lady got there, too funny!
I made a version of your Blueberry Cheesecake cups. I made Rhubarb/Cherry Jam last summer and I used that in the cheesecake recipe instead of blueberries. I see blueberries are on sale tomorrow and I'll need them for our ebelskiver feed we're having with my family on Sunday. Anyone ever make ebelskivers? My grandma always made them plain with no filling, just butter and powdered sugar. DH said we should try making some with blueberries in the center. I've made them with peach chunks rolled in cinnamon/sugar and cooked inside before and they are really delicious so blueberries should be good too.

Not too much exciting in my world. Seems to be raining right now and the schools are closed again because the weather- cannot decide which side of freezing the temperature is going to settle on.

What the heck are ebelskivers? Anything with peaches and/or blueberries, cinnamon and sugar should be shared with the world.

If I had a cleaning lady, I'd definitely have to clean. My husband had a feather duster in his hand yesterday and he looked at me and said, "If you get a chance why don't you dust your dresser." I replied as sweetly as I could, "It's my dresser. What's it to you if I keep it dusty. Do I tell you when to dust your dresser?" I really should dust that dresser before it's ready for seeding this spring.

I've been busy since my feet hit the floor this morning. This time I was baking and cooking. Made 2 huge lasagnas for potluck this weekend, soup, biscuits, and vegetarian "meat"balls/burgers to last for at least a week or two. Now I have to make a dessert for the potluck. It will be something decadent as it won't be in the house. Something with chocolate and strawberries and cake and cream.

Now I'm watching Martha Stewart put glitter on roses. Talk about gilding the lily! She sprayed a diluted glue on the petals and then sprinkled glitter all over the rose. Or you can "paint" or put drops of glue on the petals and dip the flower in the giltter. DH bought me a few carnations for Valentine's Day but he didn't bother to glitter them.

It's been good foodwise today. Had some of the soup with ravioli floating around in the bowl and a couple of biscuits. I didn't have breakfast as I got totally absorbed in what I was doing this morning and didn't eat until lunch. Most days I can't wait to eat and was no different this morning when I got up but then I kinda got distracted by what I was doing. That doesn't happen too often. Anyway, I've got lots of calories left for the rest of the day.

Catch you all later.

I am new to this site. You sound like my kind of gals. I celebrated the 31st anniversary of my 30th birthday a couple of months ago. It doesn't seem possible. I used to think 61 was old. Now I know it isn't. I also have a pair of pants I want to get into. I think about 5 lbs and one inch will do it. I started a strength training and cardio program a short while ago and today my biceps are screaming at me. I am becoming a fan of sports cream. At least it doesn't have that tell-tale Ben-Gay smell. My goal for February is to lose those five pounds. Doesn't sound like much but I struggle and work for each pound. My goal for the next several months is to get stronger so I can walk further and tackle tougher trails. This way I can enjoy my vacation to the Galapagos Islands in April.

Good Morning, Everyone,

I'm visiting a former neighbor who is now in a nursing home. Bringing her cookies. My resolution is to NOT eat any of the cookies.

This afternoon, I'm making a Valentine's dessert for my DD & SIL - low cal/low-carb/low-fat. I'll post the recipe later today.

Hope everyone has a good day,

Lynn

Happy Friday the 13th!
'Maxine' says, "It's Friday the 13th! Time to make bad luck for as many people as I can". I'm sure glad none of the Golden Girls have that attitude. I read the bio of the gentleman that makes the Maxine cartoons and he actually has a mom and aunt or grandmother and great aunt (I can't remember which one) that is very funny and cracks the same jokes as what he prints. He gets many of his inspirations from them. Some of the jokes remind me of Estelle on the golden girls sit-com.
We're off to town today for errands, groceries and DH is going to wash my car. Lots of salt lodged under it, they were talking about all the salt on the roads this morning and how it runs into our lakes and pollutes the water. I wish they could find an alternative to salt.
You all have a safe day! Welcome lessof me.:welcome:

Hello all,

Had a couple pretty good nights at work ~ now off the weekend. Yippee!!

Wanted to get something for the grandkids for valentine's day. Since Sara said she didn't want Maddie to have candy for a few years (wonder how she's gonna pull that one off) I got her a cute little soft pink stuffed doggy. Maddie found and got into some M&M's one day. She spilled them and was racing trying to scoop them up faster than mommy could scoop them up.

I got Corbin a big Reese's peanut butter heart, then was afraid to give it to him because of all the trouble with peanut butter recently. I was a good girl and returned it to the store instead of falling into my old habits (keep it and eat it myself :o ) I remembered that I had a heart shaped pan ~ I will bake him a big brownie ~ bake it and get it out of the house quick. He loves brownies and is always calling up to ask if I want to bake brownies with him.

Corbin has sent me a couple cute text messages ~ brought a smile to me ~ just when I really needed one.

Happy Valentines to everyone, this is my one of my sisters birthday. Easy to remember and her name is Valie. It's also Karen31's birthday, happy birthday Karen31.:val3:
Welcome back Karen3!
Glyne...Too cute, and you're a big push-over.
He loves brownies and is always calling up to ask if I want to bake brownies with him.

I purchased a book called '100 Helpful Household Hints' using white vinegar. Very interesting and I'll share some of the hints each day.
Today it's about cleaning out coffee/Tea makers.

Buildup in a coffeemaker's brewing system can affect coffee flavor. Get rid of buildup by running 1 brewing cycle of cold water and 1/4 cup white vinegar. Follow with a cycle of clean water. If you can still smell vinegar, run another cycle using fresh water only.
Boil water and 1/2 cup vinegar in a teakkettle for 10-15 minutes to help remove any mineral deposits inside the pot and spout. Rinse thoroughly.
Clean a teapot by boiling a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water for several minutes; let stand for 1 hour. Rinse with water.

Things are kind of cold here today. Sunny but cold. Don't have any big plans today. Just had some people stop and look at the house and they seemed real interested but I've stopped trying to figure out what people are thinking! Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Take care everyone--- Think I may just have to go make some brownies for me today!!! I'll give half to my neighbor. :)

Hi Everyone,

Good morning....It was a wonderful tournament, but am glad to be home. Still exhausted. That much intense concentration just wipes me out. And this is the start of another busy cycle. I direct Friday....and play or have appointments every day for next 2 weeks ending with company for a week and the day after they leave direct again. Cooking and baking for company and the days I direct are already making me frazzled.

Our team mate Judy with the terrible medical problems was a real trouper and you could see how tired she got but she reached down and came up smiling everytime. We celebrated her life, but I will always remember how strong she was.....hey she probably weighs 90lbs with her shoes on and ate like a truck driver.....so had a little envy too! I will never forget this experience. Judy is also a retired nurse and we would get into the black nurse humor that our partners could not understand.

WI this am and didn't loss anything, but considering how out of whack my eating was all week it's okay. Need to drink gallons of water to detox me. I carry a water bottle and refill it during the day, but always come home with dry chapped lips....

Well busy day today. Have to grocery shop, doing laundry right now and at least run the vaccum and dust. No cleaning gal...sighhhhhhhhhhh...

hugs, Karen3

ps Happy Birthday Karen!

The best laid plans.....

Expected to meet for lunch at noon. My DD & SIL got tied up at the B&B and we didn't get there until 2. Then, the Italian restaurant was closed & we ended up at a Chinese restaurant - starving! I ate a zillion calories & feel sick!

Happy Sunday afternoon all!
I'm on my way out the door with my 4 lbs. fried bacon and ebelskiver pan. Our Ebelskiver feed is late this afternoon, I'm going to 10 yrs. old GS's hockey game 1st. I forget who asked about them, it's a Danish pancake but round like a ball. You've probably seen the cast iron pans that have 1/2 round sections for the batter. You can eat them with butter and maple syrup but we grew up eating them the Danish way with butter and powdered sugar sprinkled on top.
Catch ya all tomorrow, have a good one.

I ate way too much on Valentine's Day and it wasn't even chocolate! I got into a bag of bagel chips and demolished a great portion of the bag just munching down while I was watching tv.

I asked what the ebelskiver are. They sound good but I'm sure I've never seen a pan like that. The only thing Danish around here is thick canned Danish cream. And I'm not sure if that is really Danish or not but we love it here in Newfoundland. Actually, it would go well with the ebelskiver.

My FIL was taken to the university hospital by air ambulance today. He's very sick. I was at the hospital today before they took him and it was the first time I had a chance to visit. I don't know if he'll make it. But he's getting more advanced care in the larger hospital so maybe he'll pull through.

Catch you all tomorrow. Have a good night.

Good Morning Girls!
Lynn...maybe the 3.6 lbs. is salt retention? I'm up 2 pounds this month too, I'm a 'all or nothing' kind of girl. I wish I could refrain myself and eat one piece rather than all I want.:( In answer to your question about ebelskivers, it basically tastes like pancakes. (flour, eggs, baking powder, salt, buttermilk and my SIL adds a dash of nutmeg)
Come March I'll be back to counting calories and I'll see if I can find a challenge to join. Challenges are the only thing that inspires me and I think the calories counting site has them.
Isabella...I should ask you, I think you belong to the calories counting site. Sorry to hear of FIL rush to the hospital, how old is he?
Last night I made orange fruit roll-up with the rind of a whole orange in them, I can't wait to taste them. I also made Raspberry and Grape, they are still drying out in my food dehydrator and taking a really long time to dry. It's been 13 hours and parts are still not done. I brough cherry roll-ups to our Ebelskiver feed yesterday and what a hit they were. I put Stevia in them for a sweetener so I could eat them too.
Karen3.....You did well Karen, congrats on no calories gain.
WI this am and didn't loss anything, but considering how out of whack my eating was all week it's okay. Need to drink gallons of water to detox me. I carry a water bottle and refill it during the day, but always come home with dry chapped lips....

Bobbi, the Calorie Counters have a challenge every 6 or 8 weeks. A new one just started for Easter. You can join any time you want during the challenge. Some people do weight and others do exercise or an article of clothing they'd like to fit into. It's up to you what you want the challenge to be. I am trying to lose 8 pounds (you can see that in my signature).

FIL is 78 years old. No change in his condition overnight but they've (doctors) made some changes to meds so they and we are expecting to see some positive changes by tomorrow.

I'm home alone with mom today. DH is at an all day inservice and DS is house/dog sitting for the next few days. I'm used to DH coming home in between bus runs and DS popping in and out during the day. You think I'd try and get some work done but I'm basically taking it easy today and just piddling around cooking dinner and doing a bit of laundry.

Well, I'll catch you later. Take care.

Hello all,

Didn't do so good over valentines weekend. Daughter gave me a rose and a box of toffee ~ I wish I had thought and given back the toffee ~ kicking myself. Then had some brownies and son's girlfriend baked a heart shaped cake and brought to us. I do not resist temptation very well. Their hearts were in the right place.

Always some stressful thing going on or something causing worries. Last week ~ Corbin not wanting to go to school ~ kids picking on him ~ worryied about that. This week, son Jason feeling bummed ~ feels that he has gotten himself into yet another relationship that isn't turning out well. He wants so badly to find someone who he can settle down with. I just want him to be happy. Makes my heart ache to see him looking so miserable. Heard today that a lump was found in my brother's jaw when he had an MRI to check his head after an auto accident. Mom has recently been started on an alzheimers medication.

On the up side ~ Corbin is here visiting ~ that brings me a smile. Got to hug on Maddie a little yesterday. Mommy had fixed her hair in little pigtails ~ she doesn't have much hair ~ so they stick straight out like a little paint brush bristle ~ but it looks cute. I will get a picture on here.

Well, I'd better quit fooling around on here ~ time to do some more getting ready for work.

Take care

Chocolate lovers cake, I haven't tried it yet and will possibly substitute some applesauce for 1/2 the butter. This is suppose to be runny in the center, anyone tried this kind of cake before? Hi Ladies, I was surprised to see so many faces that I know are still here.

I am still working on my weight and making some progress since I first started at 3fc a couple years ago, many ups and downs but finally slow progress.

Think I am finally use to living in Ohio, spent some time in Florida in Jan. helped to see my son down there again and our friends...this does seem like home here now. Cold but home.

I am on a low protein & sodiumn food plan with a dietitian so hopefully lose some more pounds soon.

Have a new puppy, 12 wks. old...weighs 4 lbs. and full of energy and love...what a joy she is.

Hi everyone:

Looks like we all survived Valentine's Day!

We had a family dinner at my niece's for V-Day which was better for us than going out to dinner, and more fun. Turkey with all the fixings, and I was a good girl and ate the protein, avoided most of the gravy and starch, and skipped dessert. <g> Luckily I love turkey and it's no hardship to chow down on it.

Our local 'Biggest Loser' club had its weekly weigh-in last night, and I am down six and a half pounds. It's been a month, and I had hoped I'd be down at least by ten pounds after this long, but I'm not going to complain! At least I continue to lose, even though it's slow going.

I started using a stabilizer ball and find I really like it. It's got about a pound of sand in it which helps weight it down so that it doesn't roll away, making the balancing exercises easier. I am also doing 'Walk Away the Pounds' three times a week. Can't wait until all of the snow melts and I can get out there and walk for real. We live a mile and a half from town and walking to town and back is a great little trek, since we live on the hill and that walk back up to the farmhouse is a killer. :running:

Hang in there! February is almost over and spring is right around the corner!

Hi all:

Bobbi asked me to move a post over, you will find it below:

Also, not doing much exercising at all but boy do I feel empty in the mornings when I get up but the scale is just so stubborn. I am going to have to do something different if I don't start getting some results by tomorrow because there is no way I can keep this two salads deal a day up and not loose an ounce day after day after day."

Below is my response:

"grabec, it doesn't sound as if you're eating enough to keep your metabolism up. Your body might think you're trying to starve it, and it will respond by storing all it can. If you are only eating two salads a day then you're not giving yourself enough for your metabolism to work with.

I found out the hard way that you have to eat to lose. Small meals, every two to three hours, will net you better and faster results. That morning frap you are drinking should not be making a difference at all. I have a large cup of coffee every morning with sugar-free Torani syrup and vanilla creamer (also sugar free) and that doesn't seem to affect me. I also eat salad at least once a day, sometimes for lunch and dinner, but I also eat a lot of fruit and I drink a gallon of water a day. And I force myself to eat protein once a day even though I am not big on meat and fish. It's the small, frequent meals that work for me.

I'm 54 and I know it will be tougher for me to lose weight because of my age, menopause, etc. But it is coming off, albeit slowly. I bet yours will, too. Don't lose heart, and do eat. I really think the frequent small meals will help you."

I know ...Thanks just got an idea....apple cobbler. Like peach only with apples. They can spoon on a plate.

Did you all get the storm that was predicted? We are have black clouds and wind down here. On fire watch as it is extremely dry.

DH went to his MD and came home with a half/a** diet. Sorta South Beach/Atkins with tons of calories tossed in. Try 2 handfuls of nuts aday, real butter, cheese and milk. Oh and a can of sardines every day. Plus suppliment of fish oils and something he bought for $25. Since portion control is not a manly thing you can just imagine what his ideas of this eating are. Hi ya all!
I'm baking this morning so this is just a 'thinking of you but can't talk post'. Karen...geeeeeez, you are a baking, cooking, activity machine!

ABOUT DRINKING WATER

One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University study.

Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

A mere 2% drop in body watercan trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen.

Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

Hi Gayle,

I use flavored coffe, cream, and Splenda. But I worry more about carbs than fat. Also, I try to have just 1 cup in this style/day. I try to have any other cups of coffee black - sometimes I end up with 2 cups w cream in a day.

Hi.....finally sitting down. Have the carrot cake made and the apple cobbers(OMG are they good). Have the ham salad, tuna salad, egg salad made. Have the pinwheels rolled and ready and the articoke dip ready to heat. Still have to clean some radishes and will slice cukes tomorrow. Oh dip is done. Will make the sandwiches in the am so they don't get soggy. Should have around between 24-30 tables. So do I plan on 96 or 120. That is a big difference.

Took tiny piece of cobbler crust. Made it with NF Bisquick and FF milk and splenda so DH can have some. Actually just gave him a spoonful....he is almost moaning with joy!

Have had a sinus headache all week. The rain this am helped but is starting up again. Pine Pollen! Plus have what just found out is called a visual migraine. Instead of the pain like regular type this is when your vision gets hoookey and see thru blurry sparkly splotches. I know....just shot me.

Took Dash to the vet and we are going to have to take him to Gainesville. He is so allergic to everything. Maybe the college school of animal medicine has some anwers. Vet started to give us some powder and I read the label. It is basically soy meal....gesh dog would have turned him self inside out itching.

Bobbi....totally agree with water article. I can tell hour to hour if I haven't had enough water. Why I was puzzled at tournament...drink extra water but even so felt dehydrated. I used to take a glass of ice water to bed but now take a bottle of cold water....yeah spilled the glass a few times.

Back to the kitchen...finish up the vegies and pack my briefcase....Karen3

Hi all. I've been off the computer for 2 days and couldn't figure out how to get on. I kept getting a message about something or other being corrupted and I should reboot. DS was out of town and couldn't get home because we had a vicious blizzard. Well he came home tonight, hit "Enter" and everything came alive again!!! Duh, didn't I feel dumb. Ha, ha, I'm on again now.

Wow I have missed a lot again . . . sorry I was missing but I've had a very busy couple of days. A very big funeral; a couple of lunches out; a dinner and overnight stay with friends; another snowstorm (of course); and a blinding headache to add to the fun.

Hopefully life is more normal now.

Morning all....Been up and moving for hours. Have the sandwiches made all 96! and everything ready to toss in my car. Just know how tired I will be by 6pm...gesssssssh getting too old for this. Gotta remember pedometer.

Gayle.....many many years ago I went for my annual CPR class. It was my DD 13th birthday. I was taught the Hiemlick method for the first time. I was awed! Came home and cooked a big steak dinner for DD and her best friend. Half way thru dinner the friend choked on a piece of steak. I jumped up and did the pop. Blew that hunk of meat across the room. One day earlier and she probably would have died. Had an immediate family teaching session. Good luck on your class...me I always flunked baby. Had a tendency to flatten baby.

Did you all know that Day Light Savings Time starts in 2 weeks. See there is a end to Winter coming. March 8th. Makes you glad Feb is short so we get to March quicker.

Off for one more cuppa coffee and than runto the races.....Karen3

We're just coming out of the second snow storm this week. DH had the day off again today and is waiting to see if school will be in this aternoon. The snow is supposed to turn to freezing drizzle so they may not put the busses on the road with that coming.

I wish I would lose a couple of pounds this week. I'm tired of seeing the same couple of numbers on the scale and my ticker. I've waffled (waffles ) between 138 and 139 pounds the last few weeks and I'd like to see 137 tomorrow. Time will tell.

I need to get on my bike for about 40 minutes but I put on the fire and the house is getting too hot. It was actually not cold here at all this morning but I took off a pair of very old and holey underwear this morning and instead of throwing them out I decided to throw them in the furnace. I just thought if they somehow got lose out of the garbage and the guy who picks up the garbage saw them I'd be embarrassed to death and garbage pickup was this morning. I know this guy as he attends the same church as I do. Anyway I took them downstairs and threw them in the furnace but the fire had died down to a few almost burned out embers. So I threw in some kindling and started the fire again and now it's too warm to bike but the underwear is gone. :D I tend to wear out my underwear until they're see through in the unmentionalble places!

I'm just lazing around today as I stayed up way too late last night. I made 4 loaves of whole wheat bread yesterday, did laundry, and some housework, worked on wedding favour bags and just stayed up piddling around. Now I'm paying for it today. But I'll get my "second wind" as we say here and jump up and get something done later on.

Take care, stay on plan (as much as possible) and I'll catch you later.

Isabella...Thanks for the morning laugh:rofl: It reminds me of my dear hubbie, he tries to keep his underwear until you can see through the butt. Years ago I'd throw them in the garbage and he'd take them out when he transfered the garbage into the garage barrel. Then I got smart, I have since taken a scissors to them when they start looking bald. I cut them in half, then throw them. He's has package after package of new underwear but continues to use the old ones. :?::?::?:

I have found out that if you count your protein each day you can lose weight, plus it cuts down on carbs also. I lost a lb. last week by just keeping track of my protein and keeping it close to 60 grams but that is low because of my kidney problem. I don't know the amount for someone without any health issues but I'm sure you could find out if you are stalled with weight loss. I was surprised all the foods that have protein in them. I am doing 1200-1500 calories. Of course there are days I go higher especially if we eat out and I have a glass of wine but I try to keep those to 1 day/wk. or less. Losing a pound or 1/2 pd./wk and that is fine for me....I should be able to keep it off.

Cold here in Ohio, maybe some snow tomorrow and Sunday but not much. It was only in the 20's today. We are missing Florida right now. Your right Bobbi I should probably change my name now! lol

Hi,
I'm finally back again after a fairly long absence. I can't remember the date of my last post, but things have gotten rather frantic since then, starting with the loss of my job a week before Christmas. I am now doing volunteer work here and there while job-hunting and also very seriously contemplating returning to school. I told my siblings I'm thinking of going for my PhD -- since I currently have a B.A., that would definitely keep me busy until the economy rebounds and the jobs hopefully return! The downside, of course, would be the crushing debt load I'd be under by then from student loans!

Almost certainly, though, I will be doing some retraining. There's little or nothing out there in the industry I've just left, and even two decades in that industry really doesn't leave you suited for much else. So one way or another I will likely be a student again very soon.

Meanwhile I have noticed to my horror that the scale has crept a couple of pounds past 200, so I have started back at the gym, and now that the ice is gone from the sidewalks (for the moment, anyway; it could return at any time) I am trying to do some outdoor walking as well.

Hope everyone is doing well. :)

Good morning all.....What a day I had yesterday! It was a bridge game with preplanned hands that were played in clubs all over Fl at the same time. Had 25 tables so divided room into 2 sections and passed out the sheets for everyone to duplicate the cards. As the game started found out that one table didn't have oppts......So had to do some creative bookwork and an invisible couple named Miller came in deadlast. Funny thing is that with 100 players only one person noticed anything.

I struggled with this game and ran my tush to the ground. Surprised myself that walked out the door only 4 minutes later than normal. Got home and went to post and no directions. The game manager had help me clean up and stuck the directions in her briefcase instead of mine. Had copy of old directions that worked well enough, just a last straw!

Needless to say I didn't eat OP. Didn't eat....and left water bottle out in car. Didn't drink. Gotta get me reorganized and do better next time. I spent my career being the one who could go in and clean up any mess, but got rattled yesterday when I created the problem. Friends tell me I didn't appear rattled....but boy I was!

Cooked a quick dinner and jumped in jammies. But was too tired to sleep. Best part of the day was so tired couldn't even go get a snack. Slept like a brick and sense of humor is returning. Scheduled to do 2 games in March. Now I know I am crazy!

It is chilly even down here.Woke up to 33 this am. We are on fire watch because it is so dry.(thought that would help Phyllis)

Welcome back Cathouselady.....need an easier name..please????

Decided need to go back to level#1 South Beach for at least a week. So taking today off and tomorrow is grocery day and will stock up with OP foods. Especially my vegies for the soup that keep me going.

Stay warm everyone...hugs, Karen3

Rather a quiet day around here too. DH, his mother and sister all took off to see FIL early this morning. They'll be gone until Tuesday night so it's just mom and me most of the time. They arrived at the hospital around lunch time and will phone this evening with news about FIL. DS is still house/dog sitting and comes home for only a few minutes a day.

I got mom up this morning and gave her a shower, shampooed and set her hair and dressed her up in one of her "dresses". Good thing we were all dressed and decent as a friend of ours dropped in for a few minutes just before lunch. He's known our family since before I was born and he drops in to see mom every now and then.

I weighed in this morning and lost half a pound. Oh well it's a cup of fat.

Catch you all later.

Sorry, forgot about the name problem! I'm Lynn.

Have to get an old, old stereo unit untangled (lots of cords back there!), dusted and packed; had two people ask for it via the local Freecycle group and notified one he could have it. Haven't heard back yet, though; hope he carries through. That's one of the frustrating things about Freecycling.

Also want to walk to the drugstore and pick up some items and then get to the gym tonight (they close early on weekends), even if it's only for a 45-minute run on the recumbent bicycles again.

Have a good Saturday, all!

Nice and sunny today and fairly mild at just below freezing level. Only annoyance was the wind. Shall see if tomorrow lives up to it's promise to be similar. More snow is in the forecast for Monday.

Nothing very exciting in my life for the weekend and that's just fine with me. I've promised to finish knitting some slippers for a friend. Doing them both at the same time to make sure I actually get them done instead of my usual half a pair.

Corn Syrup: Not so Sweet

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a common ingredient in soda, fruit drinks, cookies, jams, and snack foods, is made by refining cornstarch through an enzymatic process. HFCS became popular as a sweetener in the 1980's when improvements in its manufacturing made it cheaper than cane or beet sugar. While there are potential health consequences to the over-consumption of any type of sweetener, HFCS carries additional risks because of its high fructose content and the way it is metabolized in the body. Here are some:

While the consumption of table sugar triggers the secretion of insulin and leptin, which signal your body that you are full, HFCS does not. Consumption of foods containing HFCS could contribute to increased caloric intake and weight gain.
Consumption of HFCS can elevate triglyceride levels, which can increase the risk of heart disease.
HFCS can upset the magnesium, copper, chromium, and zinc levels in the body, which could lead to deficiency diseases like bone loss.In 2001, the average person consumed 62.6 pounds of high-fructose corn syrup. In the U.S., the average person consumes more HFCS than sugar.

This can be applied to our weight loss, be consistent in
counting calories/points, logging our food. Did anyone
catch the email going around about a HyVee store that
had a campaign about making their customers feel special?
A handicapped bag boy took it to heart, he wrote out a special
positive message on slips of paper and put them into each bag .
Soon everyone wanted him to bag their groceries because of
the positive message he wrote out and signed.

Do you ever feel that you will never advance in your life or career and get that opportunity to do something BIG? Don't doubt the importance and impact on doing the smaller jobs in life! Isabella...I thought of you this morning when I ran across a recipe for spicy Black Bean burgers. I might try them for something different but we have two years worth of Elk in the freezer and it doesn't keep forever. I read the reviews of the recipe and some complained they fell apart when cooking so they added 1 egg white.
I added that into the ingredients but the original recipe doesn't call for an egg white. I posted it in the recipe section.

Bobbi, those burgers look like they'd be good. I find anything made with beans tend to dry out quickly as the beans keep absorbing any moisture they come in contact with. They egg would definitely keep them together better.

I went on the pound cake diet yesterday. I actually ended up eating about a pound of the pound cake I made. I'm doing trial wedding cakes for DS's wedding in July and I think yesterday's trial is going to be "the cake" for the wedding. I cut up 9 large slices and sent them to his fiance's family but as the cake was a large 10.5 inches there was plenty left. When the wedding finally arrives and the wedding cake is being passed out I'm going to have to politely decline saying I've already had a piece (or twenty).

We are in the middle of another snow storm. It started after dinner and should continue into the night. I'm guessing it will be over tomorrow. I haven't had on a radio, or looked on the internet or seen a tv weather report all weekend so that's why I'm guessing. The news and weather will be on in about 10 minutes so I'll have to watch and find out what's happening. DH will be driving home tomorrow if the weather is good. Hid father has improved a little but is still critical.

Must go get mom supper and try and keep away from that alluring cake.

Hi Freda, good to see you again.

Lynn, missed being here and glad to see so many that I know still here. My kidney Dr. told me to do the 60 grams of protein because I am getting close to dialysis and maybe the diet can help keep me off it for longer.

Ask your Dr. what he would recommend. The dietitan I am working with said as adults we do not need the high amounts of protein that we normally eat and I must admit I do feel better. Cutting down on protein helps with lowering the carbs, fat, etc.

We had a very messy day here in northeastern Nova Scotia. The only consistent thing was the really high winds. It's a strange storm and my little area seems to be straddling the imaginary snow/rain line and it's been switching back and forth between the two all day. Just before darkness fell, I'd have to say that I think rain won out because there seems to be a tiny bit less snow than there was at this time yesterday.

I definitely spent the day doing inside stuff, and mostly 'old-lady stuff' -- I was knitting slippers.

Hey everybody. Just lurking and reading up on everybody.
I'm doing ok with the diet, no cheating but perhaps overdoing the fruit carbs but they taste so good!
Got the sealer on the walls today, so hopefully can get the paint and start soon, Tomorrow I'm taking my MIL to the museum and lunch. Both in-laws came for dinner last nite, and she thought Christmas was coming soon. I feel bad for her. Seems like she's losing ground quickly with her alzhiemers.....,it's most tough on my poor FIL though....hopefully getting her out will give him a little time for himself. I'm going to the doctor with them on Sat. Hopefully there are some resources that she can guide them to. I'm hoping that they will consider some home help just to give him a break more than twice a week.
It's pouring rain outside. Melting all the snow than has been here since Dec. 17th---we got 65 inches all at once. Never have seen so much snow. And it hasn't snowed much since.....bizzare.
Got to the gym and did the treadmill and some weight machines....felt good
Finally going to get the stupid washer fixed Wed.......8 days to fix a washer!!!! I hate going to the laundry mat.
I feel spring a commin.........:carrot:

Hi Everyone,

Linda posted a link to the message below in another thread. I read & thought it was important enough to re-post here -

I attended a lecture this week given by Rudolph L. Leibel, head of Molecular Genetics at Columbia Medical School, titled Mechanisms For Body Weight Regulation. We’ve had several discussions here in Maintainers about hormones, weight regulation, and metabolic rates after losing weight and he answered some of our questions. I can’t say these were answers that I wanted to hear, but this is really important stuff, so bear with me and I’ll try to summarize.

The first part of the lecture was all about research into how our bodies regulate their weight. I don’t want to go into the science of it in detail – much of it was over my head! – but the overall picture is that we have a complex system of hormones that act on our brains which control appetite, metabolism, and fat storage. We’re born with certain genes that generate and control these hormones which are then affected by the environment in which we live. His research shows that obesity is about 60% a genetic predisposition with about 40% attributable to our toxic food environment (the way we eat and live today).

Here’s the deal – genetically, we obese (or formerly obese) are the survivors. We’re evolutionarily selected to live in times of famine, when food was scarce and we had to work hard to find it. Think prehistoric times, when dinner meant stalking a woolly mastodon for a week before you could kill and eat it. Then contrast that with how we live now, when dinner means picking up your cell phone and ordering pizza. Food today (often calorie dense) is readily available and requires virtually no work to get it. Our genes are evolutionarily adapted to hoard calories as fat and use them very efficiently. So this system works beautifully if you’re a caveman, but not so well if you work in an office cube.

What this means is that it’s easy for many of us to get fat – not news to most of us. It doesn’t mean that obesity is preordained or that it HAS to happen – that’s still determined by our environment, which boils down to what we eat and how we live.

The second part of the lecture was the reason why I was there – how do we apply this scientific knowledge to weight loss and maintenance? I’m going to break it down into key points -

It’s Calories In Versus Calories Out: He began the second portion of the lecture by citing the First Law Of Thermodynamics – in terms of obesity, it translates into Stored Body Fat = Food Intake – Energy Expenditure. We here at 3FC mean the same thing when we say that you have to eat less (food intake) and move more (energy expenditure) to lose fat. The science of weight loss all comes down to numbers of calories in and out. Forget all the pseudo-science diet books out there about what to eat and not eat – at the end of the day, it’s nothing but numbers and calories.

Dr. Leibel has a lab at Columbia Medical School where he locks in volunteers for up to 27 months and monitors food intake and energy expenditure. He has NEVER had a subject who hasn’t lost weight on a low-calorie diet. They may plateau for a while, which he says is the body replacing lost fat with water temporarily, but ALWAYS lose fat in the end. So he said that people who say that can’t lose weight despite only eating a tiny amount of calories are kidding themselves about their actual food intake. He says that this formula holds true for everyone - Stored Body Fat = Food Intake – Energy Expenditure.

Metabolisms: It takes 50 calories per kg of LBM to maintain the weight of both obese and normal people (people who have never been obese). It’s important to note that the metabolisms of the obese are identical to normal people. The ‘I’m fat because of my metabolism’ argument was shot down in his lab because he discovered that obese and normal people burn calories at exactly the same rate. Obese people are simply taking in – or burning fewer - calories than normal people and storing the excess as body fat.

Back to the equation Stored Body Fat = Food Intake – Energy Expenditure - the energy expenditure (I’m going to abbreviate it as EE) part is made up of three parts: resting energy expenditure, non-resting EE, and thermic (the digestion of food). Resting EE accounts for about 50 – 60% of the calories we burn in a day, thermic accounts for about 5%, and non-resting EE makes up the remainder. If we take in more energy (calories) than we expend, it’s stored in our bodies as protein, glycogen, and fat.

Our Bodies ARE Different!: This is the part that’s relevant to all of us maintainers. Like we’ve long suspected, our metabolisms ARE slower after we lose weight. Scientific research shows that we have to eat less and/or move more to sustain our weight losses.

Here’s the deal - it takes 50 calories per kg of LBM to maintain the body weight of either a normal or an obese person. BUT … it takes only 42 calories per kg of LBM to maintain the weight of a reduced obese person (doctors and researchers call those of us who were obese and are now a normal weight the reduced obese).

We ARE different! Dr. Leibel said that we reduced obese may LOOK normal on the outside but our bodies are very different on the inside. He said that, in order to maintain our weight, we reduced obese need to eat 15 - 20% fewer calories per day than a comparable person – same height, weight and gender etc – who never was obese.

Why? The difference in calorie needs comes ALL from changes in NON-resting energy expenditure. The resting rate is unchanged. But our muscle efficiency increases by 15% after weight loss, so we become more efficient in using energy in exercise and everyday activities. And so we burn fewer calories per pound than either a normal weight or an obese person. It’s completely measurable in a lab – all you have to do is put the reduced obese person on a stationary bike and measure energy expenditure. We aren’t going to burn as many calories as normal people do. In practical terms, it means that when you’re at the gym on a treadmill, the person next to you is going to be burning 15-20% more calories than you do even is she is exactly the same height, weight and age (so long as she never was fat). Wonderful, eh?

Leptin Levels: The scientific reason for this change in metabolic rates between normal and obese and reduced obese persons has to do with leptin levels (a hormone). If you google Leibel and leptin, you’ll find a lot of scientific articles about his research that explains it all much better than I can. Currently Dr, Leibel is experimenting with giving reduced obese small doses of leptin to restore its level to that of normal and obese people and it seems to reverse this metabolic slowdown. Unfortunately, it’s not anywhere close to being released as a treatment for weight maintenance (he emphasized that it wouldn’t help for weight loss; it only works for maintainers).

My Thoughts On What This Mean For Us Maintainers: Wow! This is the scientific validation of what I think many of us have long suspected and it’s a reason why it’s so hard to maintain a weight loss. Our own personal experiences and National Weight Control Registry statistics show that we have to eat fewer calories and/or exercise more than normal people in order to maintain our weight losses. Now we know that it’s a FACT and we know why – our non-resting EE slows down by 15 – 20%. Our metabolisms weren’t slower when we were obese but they are genuinely and measurably slower now that we’ve lost the weight. We’re fighting against our own bodies wanting to get fat again.

I went up to Dr. Leibel after the lecture (and waited while he talked to all the MDs and PhDs) and introduced myself by saying that I had a little bit of a different perspective on the issue. I told him that I was a member of the NWCR myself (he had discussed it), told him about our Maintainers group at 3FC, and said that we’re LIVING his research. One of the questions that I asked was - would this slowed down metabolism ever change? Would our bodies adapt to our new weights and our metabolisms ever return to normal? (I was thinking about our Karen here, who’s maintained her weight loss for 15 years) He said no, that the lowered leptin levels were permanent. It’s our bodies' way of trying to make us eat more and get fat again.

But he emphasized that it IS possible to maintain a large weight loss – it’s just a little harder for us to maintain our new normal weights than for people who never have been fat (again, not news to any of us). All these hormones and body weight regulations can be defeated by monitoring our calories in versus calories out because – remember - it’s all numbers. OK, our energy expenditure side of the equation is a little slower than normal people’s. But we still can maintain our weight losses by eating a little less or moving a little more – eating about 15 – 20% less or exercising about 15 - 20% more than normal people.

I sat there with my mouth hanging open for an hour and a half while I listened to all of this. I always suspected that it was all true, but here was the proof. On the one hand, it’s kind of depressing but on the other, I realize that nothing’s changed. Honestly, we’ve all puzzled this out for ourselves already, right?

In mulling all this information over, I’ve got several thoughts:

Maintenance IS harder than losing! Not just psychologically, but for real, measurable physical reasons. Our metabolisms are slowed down by weight loss.

This explains why so many losers regain weight. Our bodies are genetically and biologically programmed to return to our previous obese weights and will lower our metabolisms and release hormones to get us to eat more and burn fewer calories in order to regain fat. It’s a scientific fact – this is what we’re up against.

Once we reach goal weight, not only can’t we go back to our old ways of eating, we can’t even start to eat like normal (never fat) people without gaining weight. Those of us who are the reduced obese are and always will be different and we need to recognize and adapt to that fact.

Therefore, the diet’s not ever going to be over – we’re going to have to eat thoughtfully for the rest of our lives in order to defeat our bodies’ biochemical mechanisms to regain fat.

Exercise is key – in terms of the body fat equation Stored Body Fat = Food Intake – Energy Expenditure we only can safely reduce our food intake by so much (like 1200 calories/day) and then we're forced to burn off the rest through exercise, even though we aren’t going to be using as many calories as normal people do when we exercise.

The worst possible way to maintain a weight loss would be to try to eat intuitively because our bodies will be cueing us to eat more with lowered leptin levels – we need to eat non-intuitively to outwit our bodies' desire to return to obesity.

This explains why metabolic calculators don’t seem to work for many of us who are reduced obese. I always need to eat less/exercise more than any BMR calculator would indicate and now I know why – my BMR is different than that of normal and obese people. I did the BodyGem test, which measures resting EE (which you may recall is unchanged by weight loss) and extrapolates a BMR from that number. Now I know why it was so totally off-base for me – my non-resting EE (which it doesn’t measure) is 15-20% below normal. So of course all its conclusions were wrong for me.

Bottom line – track your calories and exercise and find out exactly what works for YOU to maintain your weight loss. Don’t compare yourself to what normal people eat and how they exercise – we’re not normal people. But we’re not crazy and we don’t have eating disorders – it's a FACT that we have to eat less and exercise more than normal people in order to maintain. The most important thing to take away from this is that it IS possible to maintain large weight losses with some thought and work and planning.

Phyllis

Hi Phyllis,

Funny - for me, I would have to increase my protein to get to 60 g. When I read your post on this, I thought you were trying to increase your grams of protein.

Lynn...How depressing but true. Thanks for the article, it just puts in writing what I've discovered since I've lost my weight. After reaching my goal in November, I didn't diet in December and gained 6.5 pound. January I took it all back off by dieting and February I haven't watched my food intake. Now my jeans are getting tight again, last time I was on the scale I was up 4 pounds. I'm sure it's more by now............geeeeezzzze Louise! I'm going to think about this article and try to find some motivation to continually be watchful. Drats!

Hi Everyone,

Sad but true Lynn. I think most of us have lost the weight, just to regain quickly. It helps to know that we will always have to watch our calories. And you just need to exercise for health anyway.

Most Americans eat way too much protein. Your body really does not require that much. And most people aren't aware that they get protein any way except meat and dairy. We have to educate ourselves. Like Phyllis said, protein is very hard on the kidneys.

Darn, during cave man times, I would be a real asset!!!

Still windy and still a few snowflurries but overall it is a lot better than yesterday.

Just finished making arrangements for a friend from Ontario to come for a little visit in mid-April -- something to look forward to -- hope it stops snowing by then.

As I think I mentioned before . . . go have a look in our 3FC MAINTAINERS FORUM . . . there's a very good write up that Meg did on the problems of the reduced obese.

Good Morning Girls!
I'm getting nervous just thinking about MIL head shrink's appointment tomorrow. We have 8 inches of snow plus 45 mile and hour winds predicted for tomorrow. We can't postpone it because we already did that once and it takes 3 months to get her in. Hopefully she will adjust her meds so she's not living in the 1960's.
:woo:Happy Birthday Linda (Meowee), I should dig out my stats on everyone's birthday. ( I don't know where I've buried them)
Is anyone a fan of 'Biggest Losers?" This is the first year we've watched the show and I look forward to it. We also started watching "The Closer" for the first time this year, we like that too.
Our local radio announcer was bragging about a butcher shop that has the best cuts of pork cutlets. I love pork cutlets but don't buy them often because of the fat. Bruce wanted some so I stopped and was surprised how lean they were. I made them yesterday with mashed potatoes and thought I died and went to heaven. It made enough for another meal of it tonight so I have a cook-free day.
You all have a great day!

Bobbi, we have watched The Closer since it started, it's a very good show.

Lynn, it should be fairly easy to add more protein if that is what you need just find out the grams he wants you on.

We are having pork tonight but don't think it will be as good as Bobbi's sounds!

Was in the mid 50's today and took our puppy out for a little leash training.

Well . . . yesterday was definitely NOT an OP kind of day -- two birthday meals were forced on me. One more lunch to go today and then, hopefully, I can get myself back on track.

Weather was terrific yesterday although it actually got too warm (a little above freezing) in one way. I gave my car a treat for my birthday and got it washed; but the roads were wet and consequently the clean lasted about 12 minutes.

Okay . . . I'm going over to reserve my spot in the March Accountability thread.

Karen3...make some chicken soup and stay in bed.:grouphug: Get well hugs.
Meowee...Sounds like you had a delicious b'day.
Not'ting goin on today, sitting around waiting for the storm to hit.
I found a new recipe for mexican spaghetti called 'Fideo'. It's pretty calorie friendly except for the shredded cheddar cheese you sprinkle over the top but I can use less than called for on my portion.
Rusty...I like The Closer, too bad we didn't start watching it 4 years ago. We like all those detective type shows, Cold Case, CSI, Law and Order, Criminal Minds to name a few.
Is anyone beseiged with those pesty Asian Beetles? Now that we're getting a few over 30's temperate, they are coming out of the woodwork. I found some bug spray from 'Stanley' that kills them long after we've sprayed but I hate using it. We have to breath it in and it's not very healthy for us or Charlie. (Our dog)
Time to get shaking, bye:wave:

I just read this on Dr. Weil site. I'm from the old school and never had/have tried marijuana or any tripping drug. Would you try this if you were diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimers or Dementia?

Red Wine and Marijuana against Alzheimer's?

Two new studies suggest that red wine and marijuana may help to prevent or slow Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related memory loss.
An article first published at miller-mccune.com on November 21, 2008, points out that at the November, 2008 meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in Washington, D.C., Ohio State University researchers reported that THC, the main psychoactive substance in the cannabis plant, may lower inflammation in the brain, and even stimulate formation of new brain cells.
And in the Nov. 21, 2008, issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, neurologist David Teplow of the University of California, Los Angeles reported that naturally occurring components of red wine called polyphenols can block the formation of proteins that build the toxic plaques thought to destroy brain cells. In addition, these substances can reduce the toxicity of existing plaques. Both actions can slow memory loss.
Neither of these findings surprises me. That marijuana has medical efficacy against a variety of conditions is firmly established scientifically, and the health benefits of moderate red wine consumption are also becoming clearer with each passing year. As of November, 2008, 15 states had laws with provisions for medical marijuana on the books, and I hope more states enact enlightened policies in this regard. In the meantime, if you enjoy an occasional glass of red wine, continue to do so as part of an overall healthy diet.

I would do it. My good friend was on chemo and her daughter got her some and it really helped with her throwing up and keeping food down. She didn't get addicted to it and hasn't used it since. I think we should have the option available to us.

Good Morning!
My day started with a laugh, did anyone catch 'Good Morning America' this morning? A 70+ year old woman bashed a robber in the head with her Emeril cooking pan, (there were 3 robbers in her home). Emeril was laughing about it and said she should call it her 'BAM' pan. The police are keeping her pan as evidence so he's sending her a new set.
As we all age, we're not quite as brave as we were when we were younger. What would you do if it were your home and 3 robbers broke in?
In our case they would be looking down the barrel of a loaded pistol.

Good Morning all,

karen, I hope you'e feeling better.

Bobbi and Phyllis, Add me to the list that think Marijuana should be legalized for medical purposes. And I do give it at the hospital occasionally. Pill form, for people that have no appetite. We use it mostly for Ca and Aids patients but it works for anyone. Why should they be deprived of something that could help them?

Bobbi, that dressing sounds yummy. Spinach salad?

I watch the Closer too, always have. I also watch Monk, CSI and Bones.

Yes, I saw that little blurb about the woman hitting the would-be robbers with the frying pan. Bet the think a long hard time before they try to outwit more seniors.

My yesterday turned into a day and a half of busy-ness. Started with a bit of a family emergency -- so hard to cope with when you are over a thousand miles away. Then spent absolutely hours at the vet's office just to get Mouse his annual checkup and booister shot. Remind me never to make a vet appointment for Friday afternoon again. And, finished up with yet another dinner out.

At least the weather was cooperative; but it looks like our streak of great sunshine and pleasant Winter temperatures is ending at three. Today it is raining buckets and the forecast is for an instant freeze-up overnight and then three (maybe four) days of heavy snow. :yikes: March is definitely goint to start out lion-like so it had better end up behaving like the proverbial lamb.

Hi all....I posted the March Golden Girls, see ya all there.:luck2you:

Attention all animal lovers, I know some of you have cats and dogs. Don't give your darlings anything with peanut butter in.

Can Fido Get Salmonella?

Following the recent peanut-butter-based salmonella outbreak, many of our readers caring for companion animals are wondering if peanut butter and related pet treats and foods could lead to adverse affects. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), healthy adult dogs are generally resistant to salmonella, but puppies, older dogs and dogs with compromised immune systems are at risk. Until this salmonella outbreak is contained, I advise against giving your dog treats or foods that use peanut butter, peanut butter from a jar, or any other product - whether intended for animals or humans - that has been recalled. If you suspect that your dog has been in contact with tainted food (signs include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, panting, lethargy, and drooling) contact your vet immediately. Visit the ASPCS Web site for more information: www.aspca.org (http://www.aspca.org/)
Another Reason to Make Friends with Animals
Dogs, cats, and other animals have a positive effect on people, especially older adults. Caring for a companion animal brings joy and a sense of connection to one's life, and offers health benefits including lower blood pressure and higher self-esteem

Hi all,
Lynn, that article was a long read but well worth it. Thanks for posting.

Bobbi, anybody who tried to break into my apartment would trip over one of the cats and/or the mess and break at least one limb, if not their necks, and too bad for them.

I already drink a glass of red wine most nights, since I read about its benefits to the heart (now if I can just ignore the newer study that says any alcohol consumption raises a woman's likelihood of cancer). And yes, I would definitely use marijuana if it would help with a medical condition.

Weather here is a bit chilly but sunny. My sister in Texas e-mailed us that it's 90 there already, while my brother in Saskatchewan says it's -45 out there.

Off to sign up in the March accountability thread ...
