Starting the thread in order to plan ahead for my first day of the "reduce grain consumption" experiment...let's see how I do!

B - Egg whites w/ turkey bacon, bell pepper, onion, and zucchini, nectarine
S - Deli turkey rolled with laughing cow, pickle, grapes
L - Roast chicken breast, green beans, mix of roasted butternut squash, potato, and a little onion (leftovers...the potatoes would otherwise not fit with the new plan...)
S - Greek yogurt w/ berries
S - Broccoli, carrots, cucumber and snap peas with 2 tbsp hummus
D - We're gonna call it "Taco Bake" - extra lean ground beef, sauteed peppers, zucchini and onions, pinto beans, baked and topped with a little bit of cheese...plus a side salad.
S - Apple w/ PB

E - 40 min Tae Bo, 40 min BL Cardio

Good luck, Amanda!! Your menu still looks very tasty.

My swallowing issue is MUCH improved, but I still have a hard time with big pills. I think most of it is in my head. I have been wanting to take a multivitamin every day, but it's been tough. I tried using a pill cutter, but the sharp edges were just as problemmatic as big pills.

I found some very tasty chewable multi vitamins at the Vitamin Shoppe today! Yay!

Monday's plan

B - 4 oz of fresh blueberries (on sale!), Trader Joe's fat free Greek yogurt with honey

Lunch - the last of the roasted vegetables (carrots, roma tomatoes, sweet potato, onion, garlic, green beans, brussel sprouts, red pepper) over 1/4 cup whole wheat couscous (measured dry), with a little spicy stir fry sauce mixed in

S - orange

S - little container of sweet pickles, string cheese

D - chicken cacciatore with broccoli over polenta

Amanda~reduce grains is what my doctor suggested. I may go back to that next week because what I'm doing now isn't making any difference.

I think I'm going to, in the spirit of the grain reduction, go all out and get rid of my piece of toast and replace it with fruit. If it makes me really unhappy, I can always bring the toast back tomorrow.

Amanda, do you want to borrow my book? I personally don't agree with everything it says, but the doctor is an advocate of no grains (but does cave into La Tortilla ww, low carb tortillas and steel cut oats, but that's about the extent of it).

mandalinn82
01-26-2009, 01:02 PM
Well, if my 2 week experiment works, I may want to investigate that...just to give myself more ideas on what to do. I'm rather skeptical that ANYTHING will work on this body at this point (hopelessness has set in!) so let's see what happens before getting invested. What is the book called?

alinnell

The book is Dr. Gundry's Diet Evolution (http://www.amazon.com/Gundrys-Diet-Evolution-You-Waistline/dp/0307352110/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232998520&sr=8-2). Just think paleo diet and you've got the gist of what he suggests.

Home sick from work - temperature 99.7. Just had a huge cup of thera flu with an ungodly amount of honey. Calories schmalories. Going to eat the leftover pinkberry yogurt in a bit, it will feel good on my throat. Glad dinner is made for tonight. Probably going to wuss out on putting it over polenta. Microwave brown rice sounds about right.

No working out, ha! everything hurts, head, glands in my throat, hips (hips!). Going to let the velvet theraflu hammer kick in and go collapse on the couch.

Today's plan is right on - so far :) A little carb heavy due to the leftover pasta salad I need to finish up. I'm encouraging DH to eat a lot of it.

Glory, I hope you're sleeping right now! Feel better! Honey-in-tea calories (not to mention fruit juice calories) absolutely do not count when you're sick. There is another wave of cold/flu going around here too. Two of my co-workers are home sick today.

Yesterday BF caught a nice big redfish. When I got home from the gym at 7:30, he was just dressing it to grill. It's very nice to come home to! Fish + big salad that I made Sunday made a delicious dinner.

Today's plan:
B - oatmeal, cinnamon, sk milk, coffee, small banana
L - 1 slice 12-grain bread, egg salad (2 eggs, 1/2 T. light mayo, mustard) with spinach leaves, 2 cups raw veggies
S - 1 oz. raw almonds, large orange, string cheese
gym - full body weights + elliptical
S - 2 homemade protein muffins

D - (leftovers) pulled pork on wheat bun, I'm low on fresh veggies but have some frozen green beans in the freezer

B - scottish oatmeal, 1 tbsp ground flaxseed, .5 oz walnuts, 1/8 c raisins, skim milk; ww toast with laughing cow light; :coffee:
S - cottage cheese with strawberries
L - trying one DePalma mentioned on the Weight and Resistance thread: frozen stir-fry veggie mix, packet of tuna, heated with curry sauce

Oh, they're frozen. $12 for a big bag that lasts me a month. Mmmmm......but you get real salmon!

Well, yes I do. :) And I feel better that the blueberries are frozen. Those I can get. DH picked a bunch of wild ones last summer, and we have blueberry jam/jelly, but I think only one more jar. :( I don't eat it often, or much of it when I do, but it's excellent on toast.....

Ended up fairly good on eating today. DH wasn't ready to eat when I got home, but I had to go to a City Council meeting, so I finished off the last two slices of the pizza I made - when? Oh, Sunday. It was a boboli crust, with their sauce and a ton of veggies - the kind of pizza you need a fork for - and a little lf mozzarella and some grated romano. When I got back from the meeting I had a cup of tea and a mini-pita with about 1/2 oz of turkey breast and some lf cheese - warmed in the microwave (which if you care does a number on the pita - it was chewy!) I scored a nice piece of turkey breast at the grocery marked down from $9 to $5. So much better than the deli stuff.

Tomorrow's plan:

B - protein pancakes, topped with unsweetened applesauce and a spoonful of yogurt
S - cottage cheese and strawberries
L - stir-fried veggies with curry sauce, shrimp on the side :)
S - apple, pear or orange, cheese
D - eating out with 2 friends - we'll see what this place has for food - it's a newish Greek cafe (actually called Neo Kafe)
S - ?

Sad that I have no blueberries, frozen or otherwise. :( I've seen fresh ones on sale in the fliers for the grocery stores in the city, but not in my little town. My eyes are always peeled for berry deals!

Yesterday was somewhat OP. I did add a few wheat thins and a piece of banana bread and 3 of these cookies someone had brought into work, so I still need to pull myself back in line! :drill:

Today's plan:
B - oatmeal, cinnamon, sk milk, coffee, small banana
L - 1 slice 12-grain bread, egg salad (2 eggs, 1/2 T. light mayo, mustard), 2 cups raw veggies
S - 1/2 oz. raw almonds and/or 1 oz. raw sunflower seeds, large orange, 6 oz light string cheese
gym - running, running, running!
D - (leftovers) pulled pork on wheat bun, I'm low on fresh veggies but have some frozen green beans in the freezer

I've got to figure out what I can bring on the plane tomorrow that won't look like a "liquid"...(no string cheese or yogurt, but I'm hoping a sandwich will pass) but I will sit down tonight and pack my traveling food and do my best to plan ahead.

Today:
Exercise - can't do any yet. Hope to be able to pick that back up on Monday. I believe part of my stiffness is from no exercise the last week.

B: Smoothie, sugar free caramel latte from Starbucks
S: string cheese
L: grilled chicken

I joined this thread regularly for a brief time, but then lost it...and lost all accountability.

I've been sitting here thinking...I'm maintaining at 1,650-1,700 calories per day. BUT...that doesn't include my "slips" every single day. I just added up the normal "oops" moments in every day...it comes out to an extra 150-200 calories PER DAY, and I'm still maintaining.

I'm a freakin' idiot. I could be eating REAL food, rather than CRAP all day long! An extra 200 calories MORE real food! Food that will fill me up and have actual worth to it, rather than chocolate covered pretzels, fatty crackers, miniature Twix bars, etc. All this is at work....where candy is plentiful!!!

Today....here's what I've had....

Breakfast: 1 cup of Dannon Light Yogurt (110 cals) and 1 cup of diced cantaloupe (about 60 cals, as per Sparkpeople)

Snacks (unplanned throughout the day): Unfortunately....about 80 calories worth of this pretzel/cracker combo thing at work, PLUS a piece of almond-rocha Campfire Girl candy (70 cals), and a large chocolate covered pretzel (about 50 calories). That's 200 right there!!!!

Lunch: 2 pc. bread (110 cals), 1 flame-grilled boca burger (120 cals), 1 small pack Doritos (140 cals), 1 rice cake (60 cals) with 1 tbsp peanut butter (95 cals)

Snack (planned): 1 small apple (60 cals) and 1 South Beach High Protein Snack Bar (140 cals)

Dinner: (I like bigger dinners...) 1.5 cups homemade pinto beans (350 cals), 1.5 cups diced, oven baked potatoes (173 cals...the husband's doing fried), 1 piece cornbread (170 cals), 1 sugar free ice cream (90 cals)

That takes me to 1,678 PLANNED calories today. And 1,878 unplanned.

Starting tomorrow...I'm eating that 1,750 to 1,800 in PLANNED food!!!!

mandalinn82
01-28-2009, 04:19 PM
Mindi - I had some of that going on, too, a few weeks ago. A bite here, a piece there...no more! You can do it!

I don't know what got into me. I was bitten by the cardio monster and did an hour and 40 minutes...straight! Unfortunately, it was more than my body was ready for (even if mentally I wanted to do it) and now I feel sort of ill. Almost like that cold I have been fighting off is going to take hold. Which is weird...can't imagine overexercising would have THAT fast an impact.

Hmmm.

I have to fight to get myself started. Usually once I'm going, I make it through. Very rarely, once I'm going, I want to keep going past my scheduled time, and if I have time in my day, I try to do so...after all, if I have the desire and extra time, why not?

I feel kind of lousy tonight...hoping its just TOM achiness, not actual sickness. I'd love to get through this cold/flu season with nary a sick day.

B - Egg whites, veggies, turkey bacon, and salsa, orange.
S - Deli turkey, pickle, and laughing cow roll-ups, frozen grapes
L - Leftover chicken sausage and lentil soup
S - Greek yogurt, frozen blueberries
S - Veggies and homemade spicy roasted red pepper hummus
D - Frittata with chicken sausage, peppers, red onion, bell pepper, and zucchini, side salad.
S - Apple and PB. I need to come up with an alternative but can't think of anything.

Today is Day 1 of my "Say No To Snacking" campaign. I think if I can make a few days without any in-between meal and approved-snack snacking, I'll be good for a while.

I'm also having serious issues with raising my calories. I realize the crap I've been eating HAS raised them to the 1,750 to 1,800 I'm going to shoot for...but it's hard seeing that number on the screen. Right now

Here's the run-down for today. It'll be a little weird today since I've got to go to a banquet tonight. The meal is brisket, pinto beans, coleslaw, potato salad, bread, onion and pickle, and probably some sort of cobbler for dessert...

B - 1 cup of cantaloupe and 1 container Yoplait yogurt.

L - 1 cup leftover beans from last night, 1 whole wheat tortilla and 1/4 cup 2% milk shredded cheddar cheese, 1 rice cake w/1 tbsp peanut butter

S - 1 small apple and 1 cup cantaloupe (I'm addicted!!!), 1 South beach high protein bar.

D - they usually serve small portions...so I'm counting on 4 ounces of brisket (probably less...but I'm estimating high), 1/2 cup potato salad (which I won't eat all of), 1/2 cup beans (I'll be beaned OUT by the end of the day). Not counting any dessert right now....

But I'm only at 1,561 calories today. Which means maybe a piece of mozzarella string cheese (1,641)....Bah...maybe I'll up it more tomorrow. I'm going to be stuffed!!!!

Oh, and exercise was 15 minutes on the bike this morning, followed by 15 on the elliptical this afternoon. Is it weird I can maintain at 1,700+ calories (obviously) and only 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week?

Good afternoon -
Today: officially one week post surgery. Still no exercise yet.

B: Smoothie, coffee coffee coffee
S: more of the same cup of coffee (accidentally brewed twice in my Keurig so double my normal beverage size... :o)
L: grilled chicken sandwich no mayo, chili seasoned mangos
S: kashi go lean
S: apple - have to have to have to eat the apple in my desk drawer before it goes bad
D: spaghetti with red sauce
S: kashi dark chocolate oatmeal cookie

I woke up starving last night at 11:30 and didn't have the energy to get downstairs so I'll probably stage up a half serving of Go Lean in a tupperware bowl and keep it with me tonight. Just in case.

ETA: Mindi, I still haven't firmly located my maintenance range yet, but I figure it is somewhere in the 1800-1900 range. I've found that I'm not really gaining when I go up to around 2000ish daily average with 45ish minutes of exercise 5-6 days per week, I've also found that I'm not gaining in the 1800-1900 range with significantly less exercise. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, No, Not Weird. Everyone is a little different. :)

Amanda - I've read a lot of good things about the Yoga Booty Ballet, did you like it?

mandalinn82
01-29-2009, 04:02 PM
I enjoy it as something different. It definitely works the booty, but the dance/cardio section is not really intense enough to sub for my regular cardio (then again, I'm in pretty good shape AND tend to really kick my own butt (HR - 155-170, which is 80-90% of my theoretical max HR) doing my cardio, so that may not be the same for everyone.

I like it to supplement, not replace, a regular workout. It's definitely fun.

S - ff latte

L - lean cuisine with added veggies; slice of "real" turkey (i.e. not deli)

S - apple, 3/4 oz cheddar cheese

Where is everyone?

B - Egg scramble w/ veggies, turkey bacon, apple
S - Greek yogurt w/ berries
L - Leftovers: Frittata w/ chicken sausage, salad
S - Small salad - Greens, carrot, cucumber, turkey breast, laughing cow, light parm ranch.
S - Veggies w/ spicy roasted red pepper hummus
D - Going out, and there are two options. If we go to the grocery store salad bar, this'll be easy...a giant salad w/ chicken, tons of veggies, and lowfat parmesan ranch. If we go to the BBQ joint, I'll still be OK - they have really good roasted turkey breast, vegetarian collard greens, and sweet potatoes.
S - Not sure. Options: Apple and PB, Popcorn, or maybe an NSA Ice Cream since I haven't had one all week and they still don't have sugar/grain.

E - 60 min strength training, AND MY ELLIPTICAL IS BACK! 60 on that as well.

Good morning...

Yesterday crashed and burned when I took DH out to dinner as a thanks for taking care of me all last week. He picked the newish Italian place in our neighborhood and I lost all willpower. Appetizer, salad, entree (chicken marsala, only ate a little bit of the pasta, so not as bad as the cheesy concoction I wanted), two pieces of small bread, and then molten lava cake with ice cream... My vision was to split it with DH, then he ordered his own item... I ate just at half of it. On the up side, everything was amazing. Down side, I just totalled my calories for the week of convalescence and am a little freaked out by how much I ate on a few of the days & I was way overfull and felt kind of ooky. A lesson for next time I drop the willpower...

Today:
Still no exercise...

B: PB&J, coffee
S: Apple, string cheese
L: grilled chicken sand no mayo
S: chili seasoned mango
S: Kashi Go Lean
D: most likely a mandarin salad from Wendy's

Glory - hope you feel better soon, the meds should help. Did they give you steroids? I got a steroid shot for my last SI and I was starving constantly..

Today:
Still not able to exercise...

B: PB&J (still no milk for smoothie either...), coffee
L: Southwest salad from McDonald's
D: Chargrilled & Fruit Salad from Chick Fil-A
S: fun sized butterfinger bar
S: yogurt cup
S: kashi go lean

DSS weekend + still somewhat convalescing = fast food salads all weekend. Actually, I'm way under calories for the day so far, so might add in an extra snack.

Glory~my DH and I suffered for years with sinus infections. We finally gave it and sleep with a cold-air humidifier in our bedroom. It helps. Also, they found last year (?) that it didn't make any difference as to the duration of a sinus infection if you got antibiotics or not. So, last year I got another and decided not to fill the Rx. And you know what, I still got over it in about a week or so--the same as it would have been with the Rx. Weird.

Not so OP today.

E~nothing but errands
B~egg and cheese quesadilla, 1/2 c leftover mac and cheese
L~mac and cheese and green beans (DS persuaded me to make this last night for dinner--it is now gone!)
D~grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup--another DS request

I think it is better when DH is home

Hi! Would it be okay if I post here? I'm trying to lose a little bit of weight/maintain at least my current weight (I'd been gaining steadily over the past few months and I want to stop the creep up).

Sunday 2/1:

L: Ham on whole wheat bread, small yogurt, carrot sticks
S: Apple with pb
S: Frozen grapes
S: Cheddar cheese with multi grain crackers
D: Cheese pizza (with whole wheat crust) with minestrone soup
S: Protein bar
Total: 1700 calories

Welcome MadelineinVA! :)

Today:
Still no allowed exercise, though lots of stair climbing with DSS...

B: PB&J, coffee
L: Mandarin Chicken Salad from Wendy's
S: oreo cakesters (sympathy snack with my MIL while she fussed about her most recent doctor visit in her ongoing effort to get cleared for her cancer surgery)
S: Starbucks Nonfat Vanilla Rooibos Latte - yummy, but too calorie rich for most days as a beverage
D: DH's SuperBowl Nachos. As far as I can tell, tortilla chips, white cheese dip, ground turkey breast with taco seasoning, lettuce, tomato, chopped tomato, salsa. I convinced him to prepare everything separate so we can portion different things for ourselves. So, I'm going to go light on the cheese and the chips, heavier on the lettuce, tomato, salsa and turkey. We'll see how it goes... It is the first Super Bowl in awhile without DSS (3 years old, so no real appreciation for football) so DH is very excited about being able to make his nachos and watch the game with me... :dizzy:
S: most likely will use every last calorie I have and then some on nacho-palooza
