Welcome PUARPLEFIREFLY

My mutts and I did 3.25 today since it was 5K day.....nothing special for times with having a cold and all the "sniffing" going on.

Working a lot out of town this month so I will stick with last month's goal that I didn't hit....did have over 800 miles for the year though.

UGH slushy this morning. I did a very very slow 5.5 so that I wouldnt slip. My feet were swimming in my shoes. And another 0.75 at the gym for warmup before working with the personal trainer.

I'm a little hesitant about the way this PT session went. I feel like he started out with a little bit of a canned cardio thing and uh...I do plenty of cardio, I really want to focus on weights.

I paid for 6 sessions, we'll see.

I walk and jog in my house as well when I can't get to the track! My house opens to a circle with all doors open so I walk the circle with my pedometer, and now my kids do it with me. Only difference is i have to carry weights to really get my heartrate up sometimes.

I have an exciting update! I have signed up to walk a 5K in March! I have never done anything like this before, but I am so excited. I feel I am working toward something bigger than just weight loss now, like I have something to achieve here. I in no way expect to win, but my goal is to finish it comfortable with a decent time (read as not dead last). In August I am going to walk a half marathon as well, it's in Ohio right near where I visit my family every summer so it will give me an excuse for an extra visit. They have a division just for walkers so I will feel better than trying to walk one with everyone else running.

But, the 5K comes first. I found a good training plan for 5K walkers and started that yesterday. It was very easy and I kept walking longer, but looking ahead it gets more intense. I am nervous, but determined to do this.

Do you guys think it is okay to walk in running shoes that have a lot of cushioning and support? The ones I got feel like walking on clouds, compared to a stiffer feel of the walking shoes I found...but I really feel my calves working harder than in my older shoes :?: maybe it is supposed to be that way?

Purplefirefly
01-09-2009, 12:57 PM
The actual training program was only 20 minutes today but I kept going until I hit 3.1 miles just to see how long it takes me to do the 3 miles for the 5K...55 minutes! I have a lot of improvement to make by March or I think I will be dead last :( good news is I felt really really good today and could have kept walking longer, but had to go pick up my son from preschool.

I looked up proper form and realized that was the problem. I was walking by trying to pull myself forward with long steps forward, but I know now to push off from behind and take a shorter step...very comfy and didn't kill my calves like yesterday!

Your mileage total is awesome. I'm curious, do you take any Gu or any kind of nutritional supplementation on your long run. If so at what miles do you take them. I do a weekly 10 mile run and I don't really bring anything along. I don't feel sluggish but want to increase my long run to 15 and am not sure If I can do so without some sort of glucose booster type substance.

I don't feel sluggish but want to increase my long run to 15 and am not sure If I can do so without some sort of glucose booster type substance.

I dont gu until I am going 18 or more and then I gu at 16, or at least that was the last marathon cycle. Each time I gu less and less in training. I used to need it earlier and more often. I try to go until I am actually seeing my pace start to fall off and then gu. Which is a little late, but helps me learn where that point is. And I carry an extra just in case, but I dont think I ever used it.

One of the things that counts is pace. I am a big believer in the "run lots, mostly easy, sometimes hard" and "run more to get faster, run slower to run more" philosophies. If you are running your long run at the appropriate easy pace, you dont need as much gu and you train your body to burn fat for fuel at higher intensities. During the actual marathon I'll gu every 6-7 miles. The difference is my marathon pace is 8:30 but my long run pace is usually ~ 9:45-10:15 , slower if I feel the need to be.

Oh, and unlike other runs I do try to eat something before a long run. Toast and PB usually

As of today winter has officially broken me. I did 2.1 on the treadmill thats all I could stand its just too cold to out. My poor garmin was neglected today.

I now believe that spring will come about as much as I believe in santa claus. I've tried to keep going and acting like I could survive my first winter in Canada with my sanity intact but I give up. Well at least until Friday when the weather will be a much welcomed 20 deg F.

Thank you so much for posting this! As a beginner I really do appreciate your experienced point of view. Now....what is gu?

Thank you so much for posting this! As a beginner I really do appreciate your experienced point of view. Now....what is gu?

Gu is a brand of carbohydrate/electrolyte gels (powergel, clifshot are some others). They are extremely nasty. They have the consistency of hmmm...well some say thick honey, others say snot. They are 100 calories of basically pure sugar with just enough electrolytes to rapidly absorb. They also often have a bit of caffeine. They were MEANT for endurance racing.

They really truly are not needed in training until you are running a minimum of 2 hours non-stop, and most people can condition themselves to ~3+ hours before needing them in training. In a race most people take them every 45 min - 1 hour but it depends on your intensity. Beginners can't race at the intensity (% HRMAX)of an elite either.

Of course gu marketing will tell you to take one 15 minutes before a workout and every 30-45 minutes after that. blech :p

They are good in situations where you need calories but are working too hard to digest calories. Ultra runners (50 miles, 100 miles) often DONT use them because at that point you have to learn to maintain a pace and stomach some sort of real food.

6.5 today BUT my hamstring popped during my 3rd interval and now I think I may be out for awhile. I was supposed to run a HM on Sunday. :(

I hope its nothing major and you recover quickly. I live in fear of injuries. Its so strange before I started running I never paid any attention to where I was going or bothered to turn on lights when walking into dark rooms or even up and down my stairs but now I hold on to the railing for fear of not being able to run should I fall. I've even given up wearing heels in winter which is craziness for me.
