If you are starting or continuing Phase I, please post your questions, menus and comments in this thread. That way we can all help each other.

Experienced Beachers and the MODs do pop in here and you'll get lots of support.

You will also be advised over and over to "Read the Book!" and "Check out the Stickies in the FAQ Section."

I thought I would dive in and try South Beach starting today. I made the decision last night as am getting bored and irritated with Calorie Counting. I was thinking of going back to Atkins but SB seems much healthier.

I don't have the book but I have read and collected enough info from this site (and others) to get me started today and surprisingly I have all the needed food items in my house (except for beans and nuts) which I can get tomorrow when I go to pick up the book at a used bookstore. I saw it there a couple of weeks ago and I hope it is still there.

Welcome, Canadianwoman. I'm not sure where you are here in the Great White North but it's sure cold here. Yes, South BEach is more sustainable than Atkins, IMHO, although there are those who will argue the point. There's lots of info in our FAQ but the book will certainly help with understanding the concepts.

Melife, check out the ingredients in the spritzers and let us know. If the sugar grams are within the guidelines (see FAQ), they will be fine.

Hi everyone. I have been a lurker for quite a while on 3FC but am new to SB. I start tomorrow and am very excited. I am a single mom of 2, am a part time legal secretary, full time college student and am engaged to a wonderful guy. We are going to do this together. I went shopping today to get salad stuff, frozen veggies, a bag of chicken tenders which I am baking right now with seasonings, and SB approved salad dressings, cottage and ricotta cheeses. I had gastric bypass surgery almost 3 years ago and lost 110 lbs but have gained back about 40 lbs or so. I am hoping to give and get lots of great support.

Hi all,
This is day 3 for me on Phase 1. I must say, today I am not really looking forward to eating more protein and veggies.

My Meal plan today:
Breakfast - Eggs and Turkey Ham
Snack - Green olives
Lunch - Big salad w/ cucumber, parmesan cheese, artifical crab, chick peas, and olives and sugar free jello with whipped cream.
Snack - Not sure yet (perhaps hummas and veggies)
Dinner - Chicken breast and aspargus
Desert - No Surgar added Fudgesicle

I am struggling a little bit, because most of the veggies that I like are not allowed (ie carrots and corn).

Do any of you veterns have suggestions to help make it through phase 1?

Thanks,
Jen

jbaby- I noticed that you don't have any dairy listed for today. It's important. As far as veggies, I just had to force myself for the first little while and then it became a habit and then I started to like it. I really love roasted veggies. There are recipes in the recipe section on how to do this. My favorite is roasted green beans. You might also try drinking V8 to increase your veggie intake. Personally I think V8 is disgusting, but many others like it. Soup is another good way to get in veggies and there are lots of recipes in the recipe section.

HTH!

TOday is day 1 of phase 1. Some good friends in the 20 somethings helped me realize that I am feeling the effects of the SB flu. I feel like crap. But, I know it will only last a short while so I am prepared for the feel good time after.

Today's menu:

B- 2 eggs, 2 slices of turkey bacon, 2 slices of cheese, and 6 oz of legal V8
S- Missed it
L- a slice each of turkey and ham, fresh broccoli and gp with ranch
S- ff yogurt w/ SF strawberry jello packet
D- Chili with cheese
S- SF fudgesicle

How does my menu look so far?

I'll be starting tomorrow. I'll be weighing in the morning and updating my ticker. I'm trying to make this as simple as possible this time. I tend to make everything more difficult than it is. Can everyone posts some of their lunch ideas besides salad. I like salads but can get tired of them pretty quick. I take all my food for the day to work with me. Thanks.

Heather- I had the worst case of SB flu when I started! I was getting light headed mid-morning, feeling like crud. It's really important to include regular servings of dairy and beans, especially in the beginning. It will help alleviate those symptoms and give you more energy. When I added refried beans to breakfast and yogurt or rf cheese and hummus to my snack list I did much better.

I'm on day 5 and am feeling surprizingly great! I've read the book and the FAQ section. Where did the 'updates' come from? In the book, it says 'beans' for Phase 1. In Phase 2 of the book, it says, "Gradually add pinto beans". Which beans are legal for phase 1? I'm having blackeyes with dinner, because I HAVE to for New Years Day. :)

Today's menu:
B -- 2 egg omlet with ham, cheese, mushrooms and onion.
L -- Blackbean chili - YUM!
S -- Pecans
D -- Pork loin roast, mustard greens and blackeyed peas
S -- Jello Pudding

Sound good?

Just west of the western tip of Lake Ontario. It is quite cold here as well. :)

Yes, South BEach is more sustainable than Atkins

And a lot less fatty which is the main reason why I am starting it. It was written by a Cardiologist for his heart patients and I am a heart attack survivor.

I haven't had the SB flu this time and it worries me that I might be having too much of something but I have been even more strict at reading labels this time so I don't think I am doing anything wrong. I will post a few menus.

Also does anyone have an ingredient listing for M&M Meatshop turkey sausage?

I am on day 4.
B: eggs with back bacon (I get a ton of veggies throughout the day so I don't eat a ton if any at breakfast OR omelet with veggies
Sn1: broccoli/cauliflower/snap peas with a sour cream dip OR nuts
L: Spinach salad with peppers, green onion, cucumber, chicken (or beans), walnuts and a small amount of feta cheese. Oil and vinegar dressing.
Sn2: cottage cheese/veg OR turkey roll ups
S: Baked chicken with roasted veggies-cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, green beans, onion, brussel sprouts OR turkey sausage with salsa and veggies
Sn3: had the ricotta creme once but haven't been that hungry. Had sf jello another time.

Welcome to all the Newbies!

Chelby, our updated lists are from the newest book, South Beach Supercharged, and we constantly update our information as we receive it from South Beach Diet. All beans are fine for Phase 1, but it's recommended to add them gradually because of the side effects if you aren't used to eating them daily. We've found that a daily helping of beans and dairy will also help to you feeling satisfied and may help prevent headaches and that tired, achy feeling that is sometimes experienced around day 3 or 4. We fondly call it the South Beach flu around here. On Phase 1 you should not be eating pudding since it contains starch, but SF jello is fine.

Today is my official first day of phase I! I read the book last week and I have all the snacks and foods I need for the week. Today's breakfast was two eggs, two slices of Canadian bacon, tomato juice and coffee with milk and splenda. I had cottage cheese, tomatoes, cucumber and hummus for lunch, and I'll have salmon using one of the recipes in the book for dinner. Happy New Year everyone!

Gotta figure out how to drink milk without Cheerios!

 Try a few drops of vanilla or almond extract in it.
You can also have nonfat plain yogurt to help fulfill your daily dairy requirements. Here are some suggestions for things you can add to it to make it really yummy, too -
Crystal Light powder
SF jello powder
cinnamon and Splenda
cocoa powder or expresso powder and Splenda
flavored SF syrups such as DaVinci or Torani
SF jam

Day 4 for me

Breakfast - a really weird concoction that I probably won't try again :D it was 1/2 cup mashed white beans, egg substitute, cinnamon and Splenda. I was trying to do a french-toast-tasting thing. I ate it, and it did fill me up.

snack - cup of fat free plain yogurt, espresso powder and a Splenda

lunch - egg and lean ham, broccoli and onions leftover from husband's breakfast.

snack - few slices roast beef, with horseradish sauce

dinner - chicken breast, big green salad, coleslaw made with lowfat mayo, another 1/2 cup white beans.

still to have - cup of skim milk, maybe a TBSP of PB if I'm needing it.

Hi RoyalAthena, I think I am the same way as you. I always blow it during phase 2. I don't know if I do it incorrectly and succumb to the cravings or if I am just sabotaging myself.

I definitely plan on being here for support as well.

Chelby - I get the DaVinci or Torani sugarfree syrups and use that in my milk to flavor it. I especially like the Torani vanilla or chocolate ones but coconut is good too and cinnamon isn't bad. There are lots of good flavors.

Chelby29

Where do you find the syrups in the store? Aunt Jemima department? Coffee department?

Barb0522

grocery stores usually have one or two sugarfree flavors in the coffee section. I buy Torani at World Marketplace. They have a large selection of sugarfree in the coffee and tea section. Sam's Club has DaVinci. You can also get DaVinci online and there are more flavors that way.

I'm going to try the plain yogurt with the Crystal Light. It sounds interesting. I've tried the SF Jam in it before and it was tasty. I started over again a few days ago, but I went to the mall hungry and blew it. After a few days of eating junk again, I started over today.
I'm looking forward to being successful with all of you. :)

Good morning! I officially started P1 today. I weighed myself and took some measurements so I have a good idea of my starting point.

I have already had my breakfast this am. Two eggs with peppers and onions and two slices lf amer cheese, and a glass of V8. My snack will consist of roasted chick peas and for lunch a large vege salad with chicken.

So far, I am feeling confident that I will succeed.

Hi Phase I chicks, this place is hopping!
Day 1 Ph1 for the umpteenth time for me. I have a love-hate relationship with Ph1, it's tough but gets me back on track like nothing else does. I can tell I fell into a vast sea of sweets and starchy carbs by the way I am feeling like caca today. Just had a latte which should help some. Serves me right!
It helps that tonight I have a super yummy dinner of leftover beef tenderloin and cauliflower and artichoke mash to look forward to. I also bought some of the McCain's diet soda that Jenn has been raving about, and can't wait to try some later.

Jenn, your tuna concoction looks really good. I plan to try a recipe this week for Italian tuna-chick pea salad that is very similar.

Hello newcomers, looking forward to getting to know you all!
Day 1 almost down, 13 more to go...

Hey everyone! I'm back on Phase 1, after blowing it over the last week. I'm going to stick with P1 for a week, at least, and then slowly move on again...
This was my plan after thanksgiving, too, and it worked well. then xmas came along... at least I have a while before any more major holidays. I was traveling all this week, so that didn't help me stay on track at all. Anyway, here's my P1 D1 menu:
B: eggs with spinach and mushrooms
S: didn't really happen, but I guess the milk in my coffee would count for dairy snack
L: artichoke and chickpea curry, sliced tofurky w/ low fat cheese
S: haven't gotten this far - probably nuts
D: veggie burger, tomatoes & avocado, green beans

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57532

Chelby, you shouldn't be feeling any cravings for sweets at all by now. I'm wondering if you've eaten something with hidden sugar in it? Try having a SF jello with a little SF Cool Whip on it, or a ricotta creme dessert. One of my favorites is the SB Peanutbutter Cup, I have one almost every night.

Breakfast is going great as I love eggs, and it really fills me up. For breakfast, snacks and dinner I've been sticking to recipes and ideas in the book.

The problem for me is lunch, as I don't care for salad. I've been having a half cup of cottage cheese, cucumbers, 10 grape tomatoes, and 2 tbsp of hummus. I wonder if this is an okay lunch? I really like it and need something easy that I can take to work.

As far as I know, I have been totally on program since the beginning. I had pudding last night because I didn't realize I couldn't. Could that have set off cravings? Last night I was hanging out with friends and they wanted to order out. When I told them I was on SB they said we wouldn't but I realized I need to know how to survive in real life situations. They had pizza and I ordered a chicken caesar salad. I made sure the chicken wasn't breaded (it was roasted) and asked for the dressing on the side and just did the "fork in the dressing then spear the salad technique."

I think I did well and the scale was down even more this morning!! I would have completely caved any other time.

Congrats to everyone staying on plan. It is so worth it. I am telling myself this daily.

Have a good weekend!

Hi all,
This is day 3 for me on Phase 1.

Thanks,
Jen
Are olives allowed on Phase 1? I hope so, nice touch on salads. But I didn't notice them listed as an ingredient on the Greek salad recipe. So I omitted them.

They're OK. They are considered a fat though so they are limited.
From The FAQ sticky Phase I foods:

Olives (Green or Ripe) 15 = 1/2 TBS oil

Did good so far on day one! I may have eaten a little bit too many nuts but I will be more careful tom. Does any one know if I can use a protien powder in my drink in the morning??? I think it has 11 carbs if I use the 2 scoops and I only use 1 plus it is low in sugar....

deviled eggs great idea!!!!!!

Okay, chickies! I think I'm back on track now. Day 1 was rough, and I don't want to even count it cause I ate ice cream. Day 2, I crushed a whole can of mixed nuts, 21 pieces at a time. Day 3 was better, I didn't have any unnecessary snacks, and i had sunflower seeds (shells on) for a bedtime snack. I love them and they take forever to eat. today will be an awesome day as well ;)

I am a horrible exerciser, as in, I don't do it, ever. Thinking about going for a nice long walk today. My boyfriend was supposed to get me Wii Fit for xmas, but the video game store where he has credit has been out of stock. It was going to be my method for jumpstarting an exercise regimen in '09. I hope we can get it soon...everyone I know who has it says its awesome.
Well, hope you all do well today, stay strong and inspire eachother :)

Is there section of the book that discusses pregnancy/breastfeeding on the beach? Everything I know about sb I learned from being a member of their online program for 6 months. I know you will need to consume more dairy than the rest of us, possibly more protein. In addition, it would be wise to stick with at least 1 serving each of fruit and starch daily. When I was breastfeeding, I remember that it was recommended that I consume 500 more calories per day than normal, to make sure I produced enough milk, and had enough energy to burn. Hope this helps! and talk to your dr. just to be sure ;)

I do know that Phase I is NOT recommended for pregnant or nursing chickies.

zeffryn
01-04-2009, 12:22 PM
Unfortunately, my doctor is not a breastfeeding advocate :( He isn't one to consult on issues like this.

I talked to my La Leche League consultant and she wasn't sure of the specifics for South Beach but gave me some calorie parameters to work with. We evaluated my current activity level combined with height and weight and found that I would lose and maintain milk production on 2500-3000 calories per day. Like I mentioned in the daily chat, I'm going to aim for 2500 and see the outcome - if it starts to effect my milk supply, I'll move up.

I'm not sure about there being a chapter on pregnancy and breastfeeding. I wish there was - creating a plan for pregnancy was a bit of a guessing game but it worked out well in the end (I only gained about 12 lbs. and am already down 12)

I'm going to try and avoid large amounts of dairy - it made DS1 extremely gassy. I had a glass of milk last night and an hour or two later, DS2 was not a happy camper. He seemed to be gassy as well. I usually try to make up the lack of dairy with a cow's milk replacement, though.

ETA:
Ruth, I know that OP Phase 1 isn't recommended, but I definitely need to avoid sweet stuff for awhile. I thought about modifying phase 2 to include fewer servings of fruit, a serving or two of grains per day, more protein and a bit more "dairy". Thoughts?

Hello Everyone! I'm thinking of starting SB tomorrow. I have done atkins before and I'm not going back there. I have had success in the past few months with calorie counting but I seem to have plateaued and can't comfortably cut my calories back much more right now so I think I should do SB and focus on diet content instead of amount.

zeffryn-

I looked on kellymom.com (a great bfing site) and here is the recommendation for doing a low carb diet"

Some tips for moms who wish to try a low-carb diet:

* Wait until baby is at least 2 months old before dieting; waiting until after baby starts solids (6+ months) should be even better.
* Drink enough water to avoid dehydration.
* Avoid a sudden decrease in caloric intake. Start gradually.
* Keep an eye on your caloric intake. Most moms should avoid dropping below 1800 calories per day.
* Most sources recommend that nursing mothers avoid Phase I of the diet, and instead start with Phase II.
* Watch for a diminished milk supply. Keep an eye on baby's diaper output and weight gain.

Zeff, I would think the calorie limit you decided on is more than adequate with nursing. We usually tell moms not to go under 2000/day with nursing. I also would include at least 2 grains if not 3 and at least 1 fruit a day. So many good nutrients in both. It's not uncommon for babies to have a problem with mom's intake of dairy, but sometimes cheese is better tolerated. It's really important for you to get at least 1500 mg. calcium daily so as not to deplete your bone density. Are you taking a calcium supplement if you are cutting back on milk? Cheese does not have the Vitamin D that milk has, so that might be something you want to supplement also.

Murph, I was hoping that you would see this post and respond. You are always such a big help with topics like these.

What you described sounds much like what I had in mind. DS1 tolerated when I ate cheese and yogurt but not when I drank milk...it seems like DS2 is going to be the same way. I already supplement Vit. D, and will supplement calcium when/if I decide to cut milk.

I learned the hard way with DS1 the importance of getting adequate calories and water. I've already been logging my food intake on fitday (have I mentioned how neurotic I can be? :)) and I'm around 1200 cals so far today with 64 oz. of water down so far.

Remember, Chickies, that South Beach Diet is a good carb diet, NOT a low carb diet. :) Beans are highly encouraged in Phase 1, which contain good carbs and will help prevent your body from going into ketosis.

Ok I get it now! Yes I understand it is about good carbs and picking the right ones and than gradually adding in other healthier ones. I am glad that I can use my protien powder as well. I was concerned with that and I guess I am slow for some reason and was thinking you may have been telling me not to use it. I do get my good carbs in as well. I just really do not like eggs and this protein powder seems to work for me in the morning.

Day 2 is going great! I am so afraid of the sb flu though in the next couple of days. Tom I do not work so I will be fine but Tues I do and I hope I can swing it for the day. I love the fact that I am 2 days down and on my way.

I may have missed someone else answering this question but this would definitely be a no on Phase 1 and even on Phase 2 IMO with fructose listed as the second ingredient. Fructose is just another name for sugar, slightly different form than sucrose but still sugar. I'm not the expert though - perhaps others have a different take on this?

I'm restarting Phase I tomorrow. I had good luck with SBD in the fall, when I managed to do the full two weeks of Phase I--and then Phase II and a huge disappointment over another matter derailed me. Boo hoo, woe is me, what's over is over and I didn't resolve anything by gaining these extra 10 pounds. So I picked up all my stuff this weekend, and tomorrow it's back on Phase I for me. I'm really happy to see so many newbies and returning folks, and the success you're reporting is sooooo encouraging!

I'm starting Day 4 today. I can't believe it, but I made it through the weekend. We will be going out of town for the weekend in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions for snacks to take on the road? Also any suggestions for stopping at a convenience store. I was alittle hungry while we were out yesterday but the only thing I could think of to get was a V8.

I was also looking through the dining out guide and noticed that Hardee's wasn't listed in htere. Is there anything you can get from there to eat?

Welcome back, donnaval! :)

HeatherMcG, I hope the bacon you had for breakfast was turkey bacon, as regular bacon is not SBD-friendly. Also, your menu doesn't look as if you've had enough veggies for the day. You should be having at least 4 1/2 cups a day, and don't go overboard on the peanuts. I mean this to be helpful, not critical, and hope you have great success with your weight loss. :)

Karen, It's helpful to keep a cooler in the car, and fill it with cheese sticks, raw veggies, hummus, NF yogurt, nuts, FF turkey and cheese rolled up in lettuce, SF jello. You will also find a few threads stickied in our FAQ section that will have some suggestions for you. As far as Hardee's goes, just google them to check out their menu. Usually, if you select a plain chicken breast and a veggie salad, you should be OK. Make sure your salad dressing doesn't have more than 3 grams of sugar, though. You may find it easier to take along your own favorite approved dressing. Have a safe trip!

Cindim That was my ? as well earlier. Oh I am so confused. I think someone said it was fine. I could do away with the powder and just do the shake.Even though I do 1/2 a serving it still is 4.5 grams of sugar. So It is over the 3 gram amount... I guess I should just do away with the protein powder

My other ? is the new sugar subsitute. I did buy it it is natural from a plant. Truvia??? I really love it and it taste fine. I just feel better about using it. I am assuming it is fine. That I have been using....

I thought getting into the old routine after the holidays would be easy but we have a school delay this morning which means my son's preschool starts later which throws off nap schedules, which makes for grumpier kids. I am very much a stress eater and this is just throwing my body for a loop. Thankfully, I got rid of all of the cake and cookies from the holidays (finally). djmommy- there are unsweetened protein powders that let you add your own allowed sweetener if this is your breakfast choice. I actually do use some vanilla both in my oatmeal to add protein and in the Nessa bars instead of dried milk. It's definitely a personal choice issue though and I know some Chicks don't believe in using protein powders at all.

Hi everyone--

Life has been crazy the past couple of weeks so I haven't posted much, but I'm doing really well, and thought I'd share

I did Phase I last September or so, and then right after the two weeks were over, got sick and went off. Then I tried on and off to get through Phase I and couldn't make it more than 3 or 4 days. (Some of the regulars will probably remember me.)

Through talking on the boards, I realized a few things about myself, and decided to try one more time. I started last Tuesday and have done really well and feel incredible. I'm sharing these with others hoping that something might resonate and help someone else who might be having similar problems.

1. The first time I did PhI, I stayed away from artificial sweeteners. Every time after that, I tried to curb my sweet tooth by making black bean brownies (yum!) and all sorts of other treats, and drinking diet things. I realized that this is not a good thing for me as it just keeps my cravings going. I might have a treat every once in a while (like once a week or so) but I'm not making them a part of my every day diet (with the exception of a little in my morning shake).

2. I realized that a lot of my motivational problem is that I didn't really believe it would work. So, I decided to add calorie counting while sticking with SB foods. I also decided to focus on monounsaturated fats and yogurt. (Monounsaturated fats because I was eating way too much cheese and dairy and beef before and I need to watch my cholesterol. Yogurt because there was a study done where those on a low calorie diet that included three servings of yogurt a day lost 21% more weight, 61% more fat, and 81% more belly fat than those that were on the same number of calories diet. And costco has a 1% mf yogurt that is absolutely delicious. It's in a big tub. I just went and bought 2 more.)

3. Because I have two toddlers who tend to always come first, and in order for calorie counting to work, I needed to make my diet as simple as possible. I've also read this in several other diets--that limiting your options to 2-3 breakfast and lunch options and 3-4 dinners really helps. I limited my basic diet to one option--grilled chicken--and then when I need/want to make a substitution, I figure out the right portion and it feels like such a treat! For example, last night I made chili for the family and had that instead. It felt soooo indulgent. Imagine that -- chili as a treat. Last week, there was a sale on chicken so I went and bought 10 pounds and DH and I sliced it up, grilled it, measured it out, bagged it and froze it. Now I just have to pull it out of the freezer and defrost and it's ready to go. I can even eat it on the run.

So here's what I eat every day:

Breakfast -- protein shake with 1/2 cup of yogurt, 1 scoop EAS protein powder, 2 tbs. chocolate powder (love the extra!) 2 tbs. flaxseed, and 1 tsp. olive oil. I might start adding some soy milk.

Snack--1/2 oz. walnuts; 1 cup cut up veggies. The veggies change all the time, so I'm getting a lot of variety--peppers, red cabbage wedges, jicama, celery, etc. I try to have at least two different types of veggies.

Lunch--4 oz. grilled chicken, 150 calories of dressing with olive oil or yogurt base, 2 cups romaine lettuce, other veggies if I want them

Snack--1/2 c. plain yogurt with 1/2 tsp. cinnamon. The cinnamon really sweetens the yogurt and is super healthy too

Dinner--4 oz. grilled chicken, 150 calories of dressing, 1 cup lettuce, 1 cup other veggies like cauliflower and broccoli.

Dessert--1/2 c. yogurt

I had a little of the SB flu last week, but generally I feel good. I'm looking forward to reintroducing some of the fruits and veggies next week. I might make some hummus too, so I can get some beans in or add some to my salad at lunch.

Hey, heather! It looks like you didn't eat enough this day, especially vegetables. remember, breakfast is 2 oz protein, so maybe 1 egg with turkey bacon? and 1/2 cup veggies:carrot: lunch, unfortuately, needs to consist of more than just peanuts! you need 4 oz protein and 2 cups vegetables. and the daily nut serving is 1 oz, or 15-20 nuts.

I just realized that someone else already replied...sorry:)

Hello, everyone! I guess I'm on day 5 of P1, again! I'm finding it so hard this time around. still waiting for cravings to vanish. when i did a week of p1 after thanksgiving, it was easy and i felt really good, and lost 6 pounds doing it. this time, i just want to eat bad things. i'm still fighting, though, and tapping into will power i didn't know i had. one of my customers brought me a chocolate cake today. it looked amazing, with oreo crumbs all over and chocolate icing... I walked it right to the walk-in fridge in the back, and never looked twice at it. even when one of my diet buddies at work went for a slice, i stayed away! I'm trying to find satisfaction in simply looking at and smelling things, without needing to taste. oh well. I'll pop in later and post today's menu after dinner ;)

here it is:
B: 2 egg frittata w/spinach & mushrooms, tiny sprinkle of lf shredded mozzarella
S: nonfat plain yogurt w/ vanilla, splenda, and cinnamon
L: 1 wheel laughing cow cheese (lowfat)
2 cups of sliced raw red peppers dipped in supremely spicy hummus
S: 1 TBL natural PB (right off the spoon)
D: big Big salad w/pan fried tofu, 2TLB light dressing

I also had lots of coffee throughout my long day, with my dairy intake being the soymilk or half&half I drank with it. I'll probably eat fudgecicles later.

Mmm-kay, well, here I am AGAIN. <sigh..>

I've been trying unsuccessfully since 2005 to lose the weight I gained since I got married in 2002. I married the most wonderful man, who had only one discernible flaw: He loved to eat. I gained; he didn't.

But in late 2007, he died. Probably related at least in part to his eating habits. I have grieved his loss every single day, and I've found it very difficult to avoid drowning my sorrows in food. In fact, I haven't avoided it at all.

On the plus side (har!), I haven't gained. But I haven't lost, either.

Some time ago, I started trying to work out what's holding me back. Enormous grief, absolutely. But some other things, too. One of the main ones, I think, is that I'm carb-addicted. Most of those comfort-food-reaches over this past year have been for carbs of one kind or another. A plate of pasta; a slice of fresh-baked bread; a couple of cookies. All carbs. You won't catch me grabbing a stick of celery or a slice of chicken to make myself feel better.

So breaking the carb addiction has made sense to me, and it's why this time I thought I'd give SB a try instead of waddling back to Weight Watchers.

Today is Day One of Phase One. The body knows something is up. Cells are screaming for their white flour fix. I counter-block with a cup of tea.

So far today:

Breakfast: A vegetable frittata made with 2 eggs, spinach, peppers, onion, garlic and scallions sauteed briefly in a bit of olive oil, then topped with some parmesan cheese.

Snack: 1/2 cup of plain fat free yogurt mixed with a bit of splenda and vanilla.

Lunch: Chili made with lean ground beef and kidney beans.

Snack: Some carrot sticks and aforementioned cup of tea.

The Dinner Hour approaches and I am caught somewhat off guard. I live a long way away from town and am well provisioned -- unfortunately, mostly with carbs! Will have to have a squiz around the freezer to see what might work out. Something salady, I imagine.

I look forward to giving and getting encouragement on this journey!

All the best to everyone, Rae

We had a great supper tonight of grilled mahi mahi. YUM! For dessert, I made the chocolate ricotta cream. Our consensus: Yuck! It had bad texture. I even put it in the food processor, and it was still grainy. Is it supposed to be grainy? Next time I'll use plain yogurt with the chocolate.

I just realized that someone else already replied...sorry:)

just a question this post it says breakfast is 2 oz. but in the "how to adapt your meal plan" it says unlimited....can anyone clarify or am i reading that wrong....cause i always have more than 2 oz.

Hi everyone! Day 3 and I think it is going ok. Except for a few mistakes that I did not really know I was doing. I was feeling tired today toward dinner so I am assuming that is the sb starting to kick in. I made some foods today to have a use in case of an emergency, so hopefully I will always have something to fall on. I am going to try the yogurt thing tonight! I hope that I like it.
My meals today: Breakfast...ricotta shake
snack...cheese and nuts
lunch... salad with chicken, ranch and like buffalo sauce mixed together.
snack.Jello
dinner , london broil with au jus ( i just found out not good) sb mashed pot, salad with oil and vinegar
tonight yogurt or the hot choc mix someone posted ...sounds yummy..

I have been trying very hard but have found I am screwing up by mistake which I hope does not hinder my loss this week. If anything at least I can say I am trying and just need to do more research .. It has been a few years since I read the book. I should review it as well.

Welcome Rae!!

Me 4 life good question... I do that as well.

raebeaR, :welcome3: to The Beach! You sound like you are determined to be successful on this plan, and are doing great so far! We look forward to getting to know you better. :)

me4life, the 2oz. of protein for breakfast is just a breakdown of how to spread out your total protein throughout the day. You are correct, though, that in Phase 1 you can have as much protein as you want.

Chelby, there are some brands of ricotta that are grainier than others. I prefer the smoother, creamier type myself. I really like the Maggio and PollyO brands.

Hi everyone! I'am new here. So I hope you dont mind if I start posting right away :) I'm on my 2nd day of the beach and I've been complimenting it with boxing for exercise. I live all the way here in Philippines so SBD food is really hard to get by ( we are as a nation a rice eating nation. we literally die without rice). So here's my food for the day:

Bfast: Hardboiled eggs and canadian bacon
Snack: dry roasted nuts
Lunch: side salad plus chili shrimps on cabbage
Snack: Celery sticks with salmon dip
Dinner: grilled pork loin with cabbage in olive oil
Dessert: SF chocolate pudding tapioca :)

I hope this is acceptable?

:welcome3: Pinnay! The tapioca pudding is not allowed on Phase 1 since it has starch in it. If you haven't read the book yet, please DO read it so you can fully understand this plan and familiarize yourself with the Phase 1 and Phase 2 food lists. :) Good luck to you and we look forward to hearing from you often!

Welcome raebear and Pinay!

I am on day 5 of the SBD. I am feeling good. I had planned to start exercising yesterday but I have been having some very long nights with my 6 month old. The poor little guy is cutting 6 teeth and is miserable. If I get some energy later, I will try to walk on the treadmill.

Pinay, I'm from Southwest Louisiana, which is a rice-eating state. I think my mom put rice in my baby bottle. :) I feel your pain. Is the rice from the Philippines highly processed, or is it whole, with its bran (brown)?

mythreesons, I remember teething days, I feel your pain, also. I used to give my son frozen washcloths to gnaw on. It seemed to help.

Me: My son finally went back to school today (4K). Hooray! He had a BAD case of the Monday Morning Blues, even though it's Tuesday. He did NOT want to go. DH had to go back to work today, too. Home alone! I'm going to get my house back in order. I seem to be doing a lot more cooking on SBD. Cereal for breakfast is a thing of the past!

Good morning ladies! Day 2 of phase 1 for me.. yesterday went pretty well and am hoping today will be just as easy... still getting the sleep out of my eyes so i haven't planned my menu for today yet but i'll post it later when i do...

question ... i am not a seafood lover and seafood seems to be a big thing for this diet.. which is understandable.. but i honestly do not like seafood... tuna from a can and imitation crab legs is about as much as i can handle.. in the past the only other seafood i would eat was usually breaded and fried (fried clams, fried shrimp) which wouldn't be a good thing now.. anyone have any ideas or suggestions for a seafood non-lover?

Ruthxxx
01-06-2009, 12:05 PM
:welcome: Jenny.

I'm not fond of fish either but can hack tuna salad once in a while. (Those fake crab legs are not OK for SBD, by the way.) I take a salmon oil capsule every day to make up for not eating fish.

What does everyone cook their dry beans with. I was thinking of cooking some in the crockpot but I'm not sure what to add to it. I don't think a ham hock or something like that would work..LOL

Karen
01-06-2009, 04:37 PM
oh, and about the fish oil capsules. You mean you can take one of those everyday or the omega 3's if you don't eat fish that often. I very rarely eat fish.

hello everyone! this is day 6 of phase 1 for me. I had the SB flu on Sunday but other than that I am finding this relatively easy to stick too.
On todays menu:
b/fast: ricotta shake and V8 juice - though not in same glass!
snack: cheese and pistachios
lunch: 1/2 chicken breast with cauliflower & bean mash
snack: ff yoghurt
dinner: steak and BIG salad

Good luck everyone!
I have a mantra in my head: Eat for health not for taste!

JennyGirl

Karen, yes that's my understanding of adding fish oil capsules that it will help if you are not a seafood lover...

well today is going pretty well... had one minor obstacle that i overcame easier than i thought i would... my 3yo wanted mac and cheese for lunch.. normally i make a box of mac n cheese and he eats about 1/3 of it and then the remainder would be my lunch... well today after i dished his out with vegies (yes my 3yo prefers vegies to chocolate.. he can't be my son) and then i took the rest and packed it up and put it in the fridge for lunch for him tomorrow... i was sooooo tempted to take a taste but i didn't.. i'm proud of myself for that

ok so today's menu is as follows:

B = eggs scrambled with tky bacon, mushrooms, peppers, cheese and a glass of V8, large glass of water & crystal lite

S = Celery with 1/4 c LF cottage cheese

L = ham & cheese roll ups (light cheese stick cut in four with LF ham slices rolled around each) various veggies with 2TBS hummus, sf jello, large glass water w/ crystal lite

S = peanuts

D = well was going to make chicken divan but didn't have curry so instead took the chkn breasts , mixed mayo, lf sc, broccoli, mushrooms, chkn broth, dill, dijon mustard together and threw it in the crock pot... it smells great.. i'm going to add some cheese during the last hour of cooking i think, plan on cooking up some more broccoli and cauliflower to drizzle with some of the sauce.

S = chocolate shake recipe

what are some ways (other than hummus) that you get your beans in? i'm not a real big bean lover either... ugh lol

Here's my menu for today

B- 1/4 egg beaters w/ peppers, mushrooms, onions
2 slices turkey bacon
S- 2 deviled eggs
L- 3 turkey rollups (lettuce, FF lunchmeat turkey, laughing cow light wedge cheese)
S- cheese stick
pistachios (30)
D- london broil, cabbage and onions, northern beans
D- SF fudgecicles

I still hope I'm not eating too much food...Anyone know?

Also, did anyone see my earlier post about dry beans in the crockpot, I'm just wondering how to fix them.

It looks like everyone is doing great. I can't wait to weigh in on Friday..I didn't think I would ever say that..LOL

Karen, your menu looks just fine. On Phase 1 you should eat until you feel satisfied. As for cooking beans, I like to cook mine with onion, garlic, and use vegetable broth instead of water. I wasn't a big fan of beans, either, until I started cooking them this way. Now I love them.

Hello chicks :)

I'm doing well and very happy :) Today is one week for me. I've had no SB Flu symptoms at all, and am happy to have made new friends with cannelloni beans, LOL!

Have to let you know, I made the ricotta dessert (no-fat ricotta), splenda buzzed in the processor; and sprinkled straight cinnamon and a little dusting of unsweetened cocoa powder on top; and packed it for lunch dessert at work. Well I got busy and didn't get to eat it that day; so I had it the following afternoon, and it was sooooo good! The texture was just amazing. I told myself it was tiramisu :D

Hi raebear and welcome! I am so sorry for your loss. Best wishes with being on SB, I think this is the best way to try to beat down those intense carb cravings. With me, the less I have, the less I crave. It also helps me to keep re-reading the book ( I have the first edition)

Continued good luck to everyone!

Hi, mythreesons and VermontMom, thanks for the warm welcome. :) Looks like you're both doing well on the plan so far!

My Day 2 is going fine so far. One thing I really struggle with is that I work from home, and the "snack bar" is just so close by. I need to modify my behaviors to keep out of the kitchen except for mealtimes and when I'm actually hungry, and I need to learn how to choose things that are good for me instead of junk. On the positive side, my "junk" is all homemade and virtually all my food comes from my own efforts, so I'm hoping it's more a matter of substituting whole wheat flour for white flour for baking breads and brown rice for white... like that. Having a big garden every year is a massive help to this caper, as is keeping my own livestock for meat and chickens for both eggs and meat. And all the poo-shoveling contributes to my physical well-being! (Or so I tell myself.)

Breakfast: The other half of the vegetable frittata I made yesterday.
Snack: 1/2 cup lowfat plain yogurt with Splenda and vanilla.
Lunch: 1/4 portion of the Taco Bake (excellent recipe!)
Snack: 1 oz dry roasted pleanuts
Dinner: I'm not sure yet, but it will involve lean meat and steamed green beans.
Snack: A cup of hot cocoa made with Splenda instead of sugar.

No headache today, just a continued urge to go seek out unhealthful starchy foods from the kitchen. It feels kind of like quitting smoking. And yes, I've done that, too... 21 years ago. :o

All the best to everyone, Rae

Hello everyone!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Yes, here in Philippines our rice is white. Brown rice is not normally eaten, because of the wooden taste and generally more expensive than the white. Almost all of our food here is rice based so hence.. the hard part :) waaaah.

Anyway, thanks for the tip on my meal plan the other day. I totally threw out the tapioca pudding. Here's my menu for today

Bfast: Egg cups w/ decaf coffee
Snack: Nuts
Lunch: grilled ostrich fillet with ****ake mushroom
Snack: Cheese slices
Dinner: Salmon teriyaki
Dessert: S/F mocha cream cup :)

Sigh. I miss pizza

Heather, make sure the FF ranch does not contain sugar. Check the ingredients label. Many FF dressings contain added sugars. Better to use a reduced fat or healthy oil dressing in limited amounts.

I finished Day 2. My downfall is always night-time eating. My DH goes to bed a lot earlier than I do and I always seem to roam into the kitchen after he goes up. Well, tonight I got the hungries but fortunately had made a huge pot of the Carraba's Sausage and Lentil soup that was posted in the recipe section. I probably ate way too much of it, but it was delicious, and a better choice than what I would have otherwise picked!

Hey all...does anyone have these books? I am waiting and should be getting them from Amazon in the next week. Let me know your thoughts! Good and Bad.

I want to lose 10-15 pounds and I have struggled with this weight all my life. I am very short...5'1" and all my weight is in my lower half. Sounds familiar?! LOL

I made a little new years ressie that I would do no less than 30 mins. of exercise 5 times a week. I have a bike, different tapes/dvd's and plus a treadmill which I find totally BORING and it does nothing for me.

What are your exercise suggestions for thinning out my ITALIAN lower half for once in my life??? Yeah, I know...LIPO! LOLOL

Thanks a bunch everyone!

Taben,

As an Italian myself, I have a very round bottom but a combination of cycling (competitive), running (not so competitive) and swimming have done wonders for streamlining that area. I'm much less pear shaped and more hourglass shaped when I do those things.

I also try to get in strength training (light weight/high reps) for the lower half. It defines my legs and butt area and as we all know, a toned big butt looks a heck of a lot better than a flabby big butt. :)

CyndiM
01-07-2009, 03:03 PM
as we all know, a toned big butt looks a heck of a lot better than a flabby big butt. :)

I think someone should use this as a cross stitch pattern

I'm also Italian but the older I get the more evenly distributed the abundance becomes

JennyGirl
01-07-2009, 04:29 PM
ah so I can blame the big butt and thighs on my italian heritage huh? good to know lol

day 3 today for me... and so far so good... have resisted temptation several times... one issue i'm having though is my dad is doing this with me.. we share a home with him and since my mom got sick and then passed away earlier this year i've been the caretaker... dad is very stubborn and there are things he will not eat even if i mask it.. ricotta cheese and cottage cheese are two things.. so he's not willing to try any of the recipes i'm making with that in it... and he's not eating enough.. he's stuck in the 'diet' mentality that if he's not hungry he's not dieting... so i'm struggling to get through to him to find ways to eat more protien.. finally convinced him that when he has a snack to make sure it has protien as part of it.. meals are not a worry cause i prepare those but he's on his own for snacking and making sure he's not hungry... so it's like a daily montra i have to say to him.. eat if you are hungry... just choose good things to eat...

so today's menu is:

B = mock french toast (omg i was shocked at how good this was), V8 and large glass water

S = peppers with lf cheese

L = lf Turkey and cheese rolls with pepper strips, salad

S = choc & pb shake (sf and lf)

D= grilled pork chops, grean beans, tom& mozz salad, sf jello

S = ? haven't decided yet

Hi and welcome all the new people.
Deep dish Sqaush Pizza you must tell me where to find that recipe. I actually have a spag squash upstairs could be tom dinner!

I do not know if I blew it today!!! I worked and pack my lunch which was not as big as I would have liked. After work I had to run to the store and than straight to get m y hair cut. I was starving!!!! I was in a drug store and could not find dairy things so I went to the diet section. I bought an atkins bar. I had no other chose. This seemed to be the best option and I really needed something to hold me over for an hr or more. So I did it and I hope I am alright. I also snuck a frito chip and a tostido chip:( Just one each. That I did have control over but I just had to have one..or so I thought. So I am disappointed in myself but my attitude is still strong. Honestly I am more concerned about that dumb atkins bar than the chips.. I think the bar would cause more damage than the little chips. I will not sneak again!

My menu this far Break- shake
snack Cheese
lunch-soup,walnuts and red pepper and humus
snack-atkins bar :( and a chip:(
dinner Big salad with lots of veggies and chicken maybe some ff feta
snack that great hot coco recipe again.

I have to say today is hard and maybe I am not eating enough of something. Although I thought yesterday I did. oh well keep trudging along.

Here you go: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153172

Today you learned the hard way that it's really important to plan ahead. Make sure you always have a snack you can eat if you get caught away from home too long. Check out the garbanzo crunchies. I think you will like them when you need something crunchy, salty & filling.

I wonder about your description of sneaking food. I have that problem but I also have an eating disorder history. It's so silly because I do write everything down so the software and I both know what I ate. And there's no hiding it from the scale. I'm working on that one.

That Atkins bar probably had a ton of fat and calories but no sugar so shouldn't cause cravings but might interfere with weight loss. I've never really looked at the ingredients though, just guessing based on other Atkins products I've seen.

Just keep taking the lessons you're learning from these little slip ups and changing what you need to. Oh, and how about some beans in that salad ? :)

Hi all! New here and so impressed with how helpful everyone is... this is a lot of fun :)

Anyway, today...

B: 2 eggs scrambled with low-fat taco blend cheese, two slices of canadian bacon
S: Low-fat string cheese
L: Leftover Reuben Chicken from last night (a recipe I kinda threw together... check out the Phase I entree page), big salad with oil & vinegar, SF jello
S: Laughing cow and celery
D: Chicken Pizzaola, asparagus, big salad
S: SF fudgcicle

One question... by the time I get home from work/gym and cook dinner, we typically don't sit down to eat until after 9:00. Will eating this late have any negative impact on weight loss?

Thanks!

Hi, Joni, and welcome. :) Great group of chicks here! You'll enjoy yourself. Getting the cupboards stocked really does help, doesn't it? I did the same today, too!

My day was hectic, but I still managed pretty well. Navigated a meal at a restaurant after a morning of shopping with a friend.

Breakfast: 2 hardboiled eggs, V-8 juice.
Snack: None -- poor planning on my part.
Lunch: Small cup of fish stew made with tomatoes, large salad with chopped tomatoes, smoked salmon, bay shrimp, avocados and a little bit of blue cheese. I asked them to hold all bread products and the bacon.
Snack: 1/2 cup cottage cheese
Dinner: Broiled salmon, huge amount of spinach, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms.
Snack: 1 cup SB cocoa, 1 TB peanut butter

Still suffering a wee headache, but mostly better.

I'm thinking ahead to Phase 2, and I have a question: What's the scoop on sourdough bread? Allowed? Not allowed? Discouraged? Sparingly? Never?

Thanks for everyone's help and encouragement!

Raebear, you need to add legumes and dairy to your menu to ditch the headache. Cottage cheese is cheese, not dairy on this plan. Sourdough bread IS allowed on Phase II.

Karen, your DH sounds like a keeper. Be sure to tell us what you did lose after tomorrow's weigh-in.

Black Bean Soup:
2 cans black beans
1 can Rotel
1/2 package Taco Seasoning
Mix together and boil. Mash some of the beans for a creamier texture. Easy and YUM. Not good if you need reduced salt diet.

Thanks very much for the tips, Ruthxxx. I will happily add more dairy and legumes!

I'm kind of flying blind at the moment... my SB Supercharged book is ordered, but it won't arrive until the 20th -- after I'm done with Phase I! I've found enough information on this site and on the web to make a reasonable stab at Phase I without the book, but there are obviously still some blanks.

Boy, am I relieved to learn sourdough is allowed on Phase II! I finally perfected a sourdough bread recipe, and I sure didn't want to give up the bread altogether.

Today was annoying... I'm trying to get ready to go out of town for a week, which is always a major challenge for me. I have a lot of animals and I'm lucky to have friends who are willing to look after them while I am away, but I must lay in sufficient food supplies for horse, goats, llamas, dogs, cats and chickens. Also I live quite aways out of town. So... I planned to run around today and get everything that is needed, and I threw in an appointment to get my hair permed, too. The hairdresser and I had a great chat while she processed my hair. Then she unrolled it and we realized... she'd put the neutralizer on instead of the perm solution, and we had to do it all over again!!! Ugh. I didn't really have time for 2 perms today, but what can you do?

By the time I got out of there (with curly hair at last!), I was so hungry. I didn't get the animal food, but I skedaddled home and at least saved my commitment to Phase I. Will run around some more tomorrow, I guess.

Breakfast: 2 soft-boiled eggs with turkey sausage
Snack: 1 oz. peanuts (legumes!!)
Lunch: Taco bake (more legumes!!)
Snack: 1/2 cup yogurt (dairy!!)
Dinner: Broiled steak, steamed green beans, sliced tomatoes
Snack: SB cocoa (more dairy!!)

Will talk with you all tomorrow. :)

Chelby, make sure you read the ingredients on the taco seasoning packet. Many contain cornstarch and added chemicals.

This is an excellent recipe to make your own that I found on allrecipes.com a year or so ago and I use all the time:

Taco Seasoning

1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Mix and store in an airtight container.

It's amazing!

After one week on phase 1, I've lost 3.2 pounds. I thought that was pretty good. My goal next week is to move my current weight off of my starting weight on my ticker...LOL I'm also going to start walking at lunch. Ok, now on to week 2...

Pinnay, I'm not sure, but is that SB choc. mint cup a pudding? Puddings should be avoided in Phase 1 since they contain cornstarch, but you may enjoy SF pudding in Phase 2. :)

hello everyone! this is day 6 of phase 1 for me. I had the SB flu on Sunday but other than that I am finding this relatively easy to stick too.
On todays menu:
b/fast: ricotta shake and V8 juice - though not in same glass!
snack: cheese and pistachios
lunch: 1/2 chicken breast with cauliflower & bean mash
snack: ff yoghurt
dinner: steak and BIG salad

Good luck everyone!
I have a mantra in my head: Eat for health not for taste!

change that mantra to: eat for health and especially for taste! healthy food can be satisfying and delicious, and there's no reason why it has to be any less :)

2nd try to post! I lost the last one since it is sooo busy on this site today.
Sounds like everyone is doing well.

I made the squash pizza yum... My ds even liked it.. It is a keeper. I was full after...Today had a bad day.. I was so tired and lifeless. I came home and had dinner and was fine but I was really out of it..

My meals went as follows
Break- my shake
snack- almonds
lunch, soup, veggies, cheese and jello
snack- nuts
dinner- squash pizza with lots of veggies
snack- hot coco

Looking for some good soup recipes. Anybody have a good one they tried. I am a big soup eater and prefer it to meat... Any suggestions would be great.. Thanks Barb

you might want to try eating enough protien, to keep from feeling ill :)
-----------------------------------------------------------
just a question this post it says breakfast is 2 oz. but in the "how to adapt your meal plan" it says unlimited....can anyone clarify or am i reading that wrong....cause i always have more than 2 oz.

i hope someone can clarify this - i was a member of the sbd online program for 6 months before joining 3fc, and on their site all the info stated that 2 oz was the appropriate bfast protein portion, and 4oz each for lunch and dinner. they recommended that if you are still hungry after eating 2oz, plus 1/2 cup veggies, to eat more veggies before you go for more protein. same recommendation for lunch and dinner, too.

Karen

If the above post is correct on the protien portions, I have been eating way to much protein :?: Is this for phase 1 , 2 or both?

Congrats to everyone for their success so far! :) I've lost 3 lbs so far on day 10 of phase I. That's good for me because I don't have much to lose. I'm looking ahead to starting phase II now and getting prepared.

I haven't had any cravings for about a week now, but I know I haven't been perfect on phase I, a couple of times I had regular cheese, and also had stir fry sauce that wasn't allowed. I also went to Chipotle twice and had the cheese and sour cream there, which I bet isn't FF. However, since I'm not experiencing cravings and I am losing, should I still move on to phase II after 14 days, or should I add an extra week and try to be perfect?

Thanks everyone for your help, I've learned so much from the FAQ section and advice on this thread!

I have never worried about portion size in relation to protein servings and have lost and now maintained weight for the last year, so I don't think it's that big of a deal unless you go way overboard or aren't losing. I used to do Weight Watchers too, and I never want to go back to weighing and measuring everything. One of the things I love so much about South Beach.

Sounds like everyone is doing great. Baristamon you are right I think I do need more protein! I am going to work on that and less nuts!!! I think I am eating more than I need!

I did weigh myself today. I was down about 6 pds. So not bad for the 1st week. I was lifting weights though as well so I wonder if my weight would have been different? I also know I need to watch the nut intake.. I think I am grabbing too much. I need to bag them into servings.

I need out plan my meals for the week and did make a bean soup. Thnaks Chelby2 for the idea.

I took a can of ff refried beans , black beans rinsed, sauteed onion and jalapeno pepper, chicken broth and can of chopped tom and I added a can of artichokes. I also put in some taco seasoning, homemade kind! Yummy, my kids loved it with ff cheese and a dollop of ff sour cream. Filling as well so this is staying with me much better. So today
Breakfast-egg and turkey bacon
snack - Lupine beans, plain yogurt with jello mix
lunch soup
dinner Buffalo burger..never made one at home but had one out and it was yummy, with salad and squash dish
snack...???

Chat later Barb

hello everyone! Day 11 of Phase 1 today! I can't believe I have lasted so long (neither can my husband!) I can tell it has made a BIG difference to the way I look - people keep telling me how good I am looking :carrot:

I was re-reading the book last night and realised I am one of these people who just wants to stay on the restrictive eating plan of Phase 1, but I do realise it wouldn't be healthy in the long run.

I have never been a fruit eater though and I will be adding in the carbs very slowly because I am prone to cravings!

I can't wait to weigh in on Friday morning and see the final weight loss, I have lost 2.5kgs (5.5 lbs) so would be very happy with another 500g (1 lb) loss!

I am new to the site, but not new to SB. I lost 75 lbs on it in 4 months about 2 1/2 years ago,. The weight melted off when I followed the diet to the letter. Okay, knock me in the head, I got off of it and gained it all back. I started again on the 4th and have lost 12 pounds. I try to stay on Phase one as long as possible, and will advise you that it is easy to fall into the "getting too much protein and not enough veggies mode" and weight loss stalls. Here is one of my favorite recipes. It sounds like a strange combo, but it is really great and helps get in your veggies. I mix my protein in with this. My favorite is to mix it with tuna or black beans or shrimp. I make double batches of it and keep it in the fridge and heat it then add my protein:
Green Bean Chili:
3 cans french cut green beans drained
2 cans of stewed tomatoes (I like the ones with the chili seasoning in them)
1 or 2 medium onions diced
1 or two cans of mushrooms (6oz) drained
1tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
chili powder to taste ( I actually use 1/2 packet of Brooks chili mix in mine) but would guess you would need at least 1 tbsp. if you are using chili powder alone--I like mine spiced to kick up the heat! (BTW, the packets of chili mix have some dextrose and cornstarch in them, it is negligible when you split out the total in the recipe but you may choose to use the chili powder alone--I am willing to take those few calories for the flavor)

Mix all ingredients into large saucepan and cook over medium heat until it boils, reduce heat to meduim low and let it simmer for an hour or until it is really reduced, just like you would cook chili. I love this with tuna, and yes, it sounds wierd, but It is wonderful. Several of my co-workers are now hooked on this and they aren't even dieting! Some of them make it as a side dish and add cheddar cheese It is full of veggies and wonderful for a cold winter day. Sometimes, I add other things to try to get in my veggies...some coleslaw mix or some broccoli slaw mix (coleslaw mix is the better of the two), but I will do anything to disguise some veggies in and get them palatable.

I'm currently on Day 4 and really have only have 1 major craving but worked thru it ~ no hunger issues, no "carb flu", nothing ?? wondering what I am doing wrong ?? the only thing I have eaten that wasn't exactly perfect was chili that had beans in them that had sugar in them, but I rinsed them before putting them in and it was a minimal amount ~ today I had a sweet tooth so made the creamy pb cookie recipe and that totally did it for me, now i am fine ! last time i did SB i was constantly craving everything i should not eat! either i'm messing up somewhere i don't realize or my body is finally giving in and submitting lol...

ok. I've never read the book :o I just learned everything from the website. I think the "limits" on protein are part of learning what an appropriate serving size is. Also, if you stick to the guidelines, you won't go over 1500 - 2000 calories. thinking of my protein in terms of ounces has really helped me a lot, because i'm a vegetarian, and before SB i rarely ate enough protein to be healthy. knowing that 1 egg= 1oz, and 1/4 beans = 1 oz, etc makes it easier to make sure i eat enough. and when we buy meat, (mostly fish, but bf likes beef) we have them cut filets of 4 oz servings, otherwise we'd each eat way too much.

Hi everyone,

I used to be on 3FC constantly about a year ago, but mainly in Calorie Counters and Featherweights. I've been struggling to drop my last 5-10 pounds for a while, and when I recently read South Beach Diet, it made a lot of sense. I tend to basically eat like the diet prescribes anyway, so I thought I would just step it up and make sure I was following it. I started on Monday morning, and the only real change from my normal diet is no fruit (though Mon night I had an apple).

This morning I woke up ridiculously sick. I've read that a lot of people get the "South Beach Flu," but this seemed different - I actually threw up a few times. Also, I'd be kind of surprised if I got the SB Flu anyway, as the diet is very similar to what I normally eat.

Is this the SB Flu? Or am I actually sick? Either way, what's a good thing to eat when I'm this sick? I had some cold grilled chicken breast for breakfast and it was a bit hard to eat, and I still don't feel great.

Thanks, ladies!

baristamon
01-14-2009, 11:22 AM
sounds like you might actually be a bit under the weather, or maybe you are suffering food poisoning - have you eaten out lately? I don't think sb flu makes you vomit, it just makes you feel achy and tired. I know that for me, if I don't eat regularly, I get sick to my stomach to the point of nausea, but after I eat I feel better. so, just stick with the plan, don't skip snacks, eat beans and dairy, and plenty of veggies along with your protein, and I hope you feel better soon!

Just a quick check-in here... I'm away from home helping to look after my dad through a surgery (he's fine, just a bit of a recovery period now!), totally out of my "comfort zone" and not minding SB ONE BIT.

I continue to marvel at the physiological changes in me. I just... don't have cravings anymore. I don't even think about food except when I'm actually hungry. There is no way to explain what a new experience this is for me -- you're listening to the girl who is known for her cookery far and wide! All I EVER thought about was food. So... WOW.

This diet is so adaptable to any situation. Even traveling, I was always able to find a vegetable juice, a hardboiled egg or two or a salad with grilled or broiled chicken.

I haven't gone off plan at all, and I can hardly believe I have only 2 days left before starting Phase II. I've become such a cheerleader that I gave my dad a copy of the book for an early birthday present -- he has a fair bit to lose, too! If I were any more jazzed, I'd be annoying. Yeah, yeah, I know. :o

I'm not a scale-crawler, though I did for the first time ever buy one so I could chart my progress because I think there will ACTUALLY BE SOME. I weighed before I left last Tuesday and I'll weigh when I get home next Tuesday. I'll be very interested to see what the second week of Phase I has wrought!

Hope everyone else is doing well, too!!

All the best,

Rae

I am getting married in 1 year, so I have to shed at least 30 lbs. My family and friends do not know yet, you all are the first to know. I just started the diet last week and I am happy with the results. My clothes fit much better now. So far, I lost ~ 4.5 lbs.

My BF is also on the diet, he lost 6 lbs at the end of WK 1. I'm a little jealous.

I am asian, so I incorporate a lot of asian influence in my meals. I started making yolkess egg drop soup and seaweed soup. Each serving of those is less than 30 cal, but very filling. I have deligent with portion size and haven't cheated once. The first week was touch because of multiple celebrations my grandma's B-day, boyfriend's b-day and my parent's anniversary.

The first few days were tough, my BF and I would txt each other how hungry we are. We commented that we were not full or satisfied - just "sufficiently nourished". Which means we fighting the urge to grab a piece of roll. But after day 5, the cravings went away.

I want to be a skinny ***** at my wedding, hopefully forever.

:welcome3: beezip and redflatshoe!

redfatshoe, some of your menus look a little light on veggies, so make sure you're eating at least 4 1/2 cups every day. And including more beans and diary will help you stay full and satisfied, too. Also, you may enjoy a third snack at the end of the day. Most of us save our dessert for this, and you'll find many ideas in our recipe boards, or you can have SF jello or a NSA fudgesicle, or one of the ricotta cream desserts. Your calories are way too low, you should be eating at least 1200 to 1500 calories to properly fuel your body and boost your metabolism. You will still lose weight, and your body will be getting the nutrients it needs to speed you along on your weightloss journey.

Congrats on the loss! Your calories are low, as cottage said. And the veggies totally need to go up a notch -- 4.5 cups+ a day.

Totally use the recipe forum. Great ideas there and yummy ones too. Welcome!!!

I'm starting P1 again tomorrow. I've planned my menu up to Monday (that always helps me a lot, knowing in advance what I'll be eating).
Looking forward to feeling healthy again !

So I am easing my way into Phase 2 (I consider it "Phase 2 Beta," in a really dorky way). Enjoyed my first apple this afternoon as a snack, with some laughing cow light as a protein accompaniment. All of a sudden my stomach feels really icky! The funny thing is that I'm sure it's all in my head. I've willed myself to be scared of apples, oy...

6 lbs down on phase 1 :)

Thanks for the welcome. Last weekend was tough, I attended 4 parties. Not a whole lot of veggies at those parties. I only limited myself to the lean meats and diet sprite.

Ok so it's P1 Day 1. This is about my third reboot of P1, but that's over a period of about 4 years, so it's like a fresh start. My carb cravings have been really bad lately and I knew I'd gained a fair amount in the past month or two...soooo..I got weighed this morning and I am the heaviest I've ever been. Gained a further 20 pounds since I first did SBD. So I'm feeling highly motivated right now.

I've had a complicated history with SBD, but I've also had more success with this WOE than any other, and I've tried them all. Last time I was going great but some personal issues arose and I dealt with them by eating - which solves nothing. And needless to say, it wasn't salad I chose to eat!! :(
Anyhow - this is a brand new start for me, and I'm ready for the challenge !

Hope everyone is doing well today!

I'm not sure why, but when I weighed in this morning, I weighed exactly the same as last week. I was so disappointed. I haven't cheated at all.
I bought the new book so I guess I'll sit down and read that to see if there is anything I can do different. I still think I might be eating too much food. Oh well, on to week 4.

I have 3 more days to go until PH1 is over. PH 1 WK2 weight loss was not as drastic as WK 1, but I am still happy with the results. I am planning to add some light weight lifting and cardio in PH 2.

I can't wait to have fruit!

today is my last "technical" day on P1.... not seeing how I will change much though cuz really the only thing I miss is my yogurt lol. Fruit will be a bigger part when the season changes and more fresh fruit is available. I don't eat much pasta/grains anyway so i'm totally not missing that.

Down 10.2 lbs !!

Karen, if you are into week 4, you shouldn't still be on Phase I. Most people find their weight loss slows in Phase II, so don't be worried. I had weeks where I didn't lose at all, only to lose several the next week. Just know you are getting healthier and closer to your goal each week.

Anne,

I'm having a hard time moving on to phase 2. When I eat carbs, I just crave more. I know I have to learn how to do this the right way. What would be a good thing to add in first. I did start eating the frozen veggies that have the broc, caul and carrots but I haven't added anything else back in yet.

Karen, I added apples the first week. The second week, I kept apples and added WW tortilla wraps. Going to ph2 was scary for me, too.

I've also had no problem with apples... that's the only thing I've added back so far. Next week, I'm thinking I might go with brown rice.

Good luck, you'll find the combo that's right for you!

Karen, transition to P2 has been problematic for me in the past.
This thread
http://3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83406

has some really helpful info. I'll be making the transition in two weeks time and I'm going to be reading this thread over and over!
Basically, it's all about trial and error. Oatmeal was a complete disaster for me, even the steel cut oats. So I won't be eating that this time around!

jenne - thanks for the welcome back :)

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful info. I think I'll try an apple tomorrow and I'll be reading that thread too. Thanks.

I added oatmeal the first week, apple or banana at lunch the second week. I don't think I added another grain at supper for a few weeks after that, so I didn't add too much too soon. I guess I'm lucky that I did not experience any cravings with this.

quickie phase 1 question - i pretty much gave up my diet over the weekend (probably cheating 1 meal per day friday, saturday, and sunday). has anyone "started over" so soon? i had a luna bar for breakfast but all phase-1 friendly foods otherwise, and i feel like i'm ready to take it on now.
