I started this at a size 22 and today am wearing sizes 6-8 (depending on who made them). This weight loss has really covered the full spectrum of sizing for me. It's been... interesting!

First adult size was a 14, then down to 10, back up to 16ish, probably could've worn 18s but wouldn't let myself, now about a 14 again.

I'd love to be a 4!

I am currently 14, should have been 16 at my highest weight, but wouldn't buy the clothes, my lowest was a 5. I think sizes have really changed, my oldest daughter is a 2 in most things, and she is actually a bit bigger than I was at the age. I would be happy at a 10, but right now 12 seems a nice mini-goal.

2-14...just like kittycat a "tight" 14. I am, as I guess you can sort of tell from my siggy, now wearing around a 4. I have found a lot of differences in the sizes in various stores. Most of my jeans are 4's, but I have a pair of 6's that fit well and I have a skirt and a dress that are 2s from somewhere else.

I've been a range ... mostly in my signature. Bear in mind these are UK sizes, so look bigger. I'm aiming for a UK 12 which is a US 10.

I always have to wear a size bigger on top as well, I have quite broad shoulders.

I recently threw out all of my bigger stuff. I managed to drop one size over the past year and I ain't going back! I can't now as the biggest clothing I have is UK size 16, I can't WAIT to throw those sizes out of my wardrobe for good!

(American) 4 - 12

(UK) 8 - 16

Currently American 6 - 8 / UK 10-12 (more towards the 12 though!)
Want to be UK 8 / American 4 :)

I used to buy XS tops in H&M, for goodness sake. I was SMALL! That was when I was 17. And I'm 20 now.

When I started, I was size 16 although I admit I have one size 18 coat (you have no idea how I wish I had not bought that coat - it was a rather expensive shearling coat and of course I can wrap it around myself 3x now).

At the present time, I wear size 6 jeans (though I am bit bigger on top [as Erin Brockovich said, "They are called boobs, Ed"]). Yesterday, I purchased a size 4 skirt (Schumeany, are you reading this? LOL), it is still a wee tight although I can zip it up. I have prescribed myself 3 weeks of rigorous ab exercise regime - that should do it. :-)

Right now I'm a size 8...

I don't know what women's size 2x is, but that is what I wear now. At my skinniest (and it was pretty darn skinny, 119) I was in a size 9 (with an occasional 7). I have a really large bone structure, and I could be massively underweight and I would still need size 9. But I still have some of those beautiful clothes from my 119lb period and I hold them up in amazement at how tiny my waist was and wonder how I ever fit into them. I doubt my waist will ever be that small again, but I really would like to wear a size 9 again.

Ignoring the odd pairs of pants that fit in smaller than expected sizes, I've worn from size 6 to size 18. That size 6 was from 10 years ago (at about 127 pounds) and would probably be a size 4 now. I was never in the 6 consistently.

Now, at 142 pounds, I'm usually a size 8 (I've tried on a lot of pants lately, and 8 is pretty consistent. Occasionally a pair of pants needed up to a size 12, but rarely). But I just came home with a couple of pants in size 6. They're tighter than I would have bought at maintenance, but I'm still losing, so they're perfect for that. Size 6 is so weird; it's only because sizes have changed sooooo much. I'm healthy, but I'm just not skinny.

I don't know how much more I'll lose, but if I end up all the way down to 130 again, I might be in a 4. Very strange what they've done to sizes.

At my highest weight I wore a 12-14. Having lost weight many times and kept some of my older clothing, it's really obvious how much the vanity sizing has come into play. My smallest size years ago was a size 6. Now I can wear a 2 or 4 depending on the manufacturer.

The only sizes I've ever consistently worn are 8, 10, and 12. I bought one pair of 14s, but they stretched out immediately so I'm just saying I'm a 12. Because even when I bought those 14s I was fitting comfortably into 12s. Anyway, aside from that tangent, I've just worn mainly those three sizes. Currently I'm in a 12. I would love to fit into a 6 at some point, though if I get back to an 8 I'll be pretty content with that!

My lowest size I wore once I became an adult was about a size 10 though they were absolutely huge on me when I was studying abroad in France and I was only there for a little over a month so I didn't feel the need to buy clothes there and come back with a ton of extra clothes so I didn't which was good because a couple weeks after I got back I was fitting the 10s comfortably again. The highest size I wore was an 18/20. I'm not really sure where I am right now because I wear a lot of sweats, but I did try on a pair of 16 jeans and the life wasn't being sucked out of me so thats a good sign.

I've been as high as a 24 and am currently wearing loose US14s. I've just bought some skirts in UK14 which on the label say they are a US10. The skirts fit fine round the waist but I think I need to lose another 5-7lb before I will wear them in public. In trousers I'm always a size larger to accommodate the large 'derriere'.

They do get bigger over time.

When I was ~18 I weighed about 120 and wore a size 8.
When I was ~30 I weighed about 130 and wore a size 8.
Now I'm almost 40, weigh 142, and wear a size 8.

I recently came across an book about clothes from the early 1980s. It had a size chart in it, and I think the measurements were about 2 inches off from several current brand size charts.

That's really interesting Julie. I had no idea about these things since I've not had as much experience as some of you ladies with the changes in clothes since I'm only 23 and I guess I haven't worn that much in the way of ranges of sizes. I don't know how the current sizing relates to what I used to wear 5 years ago but if it's now bigger what hopes do I have of wearing regular size clothes when I reach my goal weight? The only reason I say this is because I tend to change sizes for every 10 pounds and when I was at my lowest adult weight (in the 150s) I was wearing a VERY lose size 10 so if my calculations are right I would be like wearing a size 0 at like 115 if the sizes are what they were then but if they're bigger now than they were traditionally would it mean that I'll wear like a 00 or like kids sizes??? Not that I'm complaining about the potential for being small and being at a healthy weight for my height but it would make shopping for clothes kinda hard :halfempty: :dunno:

I wonder about that sometimes. I mean, I just bought two pairs of size 6 pants. They're a little too small, but I'm still losing, and I'm wearing one of them right now. They're wearable.

Now my niece has a naturally very straight, very thin body type. Seems like if I could wear a size 6, she must wear a negative 6!

Of course, different designers, and even different lines from the same company, vary in their sizing. If you find a line that runs small, you might find you fit their size 2.

But yeah, yesterday was the first time it hit me I might maintain at a size 4, which boggles my mind.

At my smallest, at 135 I was a size 8. WTF?! haha I am just realizing that that was an awful big size for 135, compared to a lot of ya'll. :(
Anyway I'm a loose 14 now, but it was tight just a month or two ago! :) I'm excited to get down to a size 8 again and maybe I'll push myself to tone up a lot for some more inches lost than I'd seen at my previous 135!! Maybe then I can be a bit smaller. And if not, that's cool too! :)

carcar: I've usually always worn a 7 or 9 even when I was 135-140 lbs... I think some of us just have larger bones! Seriously-- I'm short (5'2") but have pretty wide hips, people never seemed to believe that I weighed what I did when I was 30 lbs lighter... I think I carry about 10 lbs more than the average frame, if that makes any sense?

OOO congrats on the size 6s you're fitting into! I wonder why they keep making the sizes bigger? Is it because the population is getting bigger and they want to keep people in their delusion that they are the same size even though they've gained weight and are bigger? I think that's just silly because obesity is an epidemic and there's no need in trying to assuage people's egos because they're gaining that weight but feel the need to fit into those size 5s they did before. I think it's hurting them rather than helping. If people don't fit the old sizes they used to they should look at maybe getting more fit or if it's due to aging (since we all know we naturally put on a little bit of weight as we get older due to the slow down of the metabolism) then they should learn to accept it. There's nothing wrong with going from a size 4 to a size 6 if that's your body's natural progression due to internal changes of metabolism.

Sorry rant is over. But does anyone else seem to get my point with the change in sizes?

An explanation I heard, and it makes sense to me, is that companies take their size range (say, 2-14), pick the middle size, and size it according to their average customer. That is, they size the middle size (8) to be the one purchased the most. It has to do with their template and ordering fabrics and such. It explains why the sizes get bigger, and also why different designers/lines aren't sized the same. Also, the bigger sizes aren't 100% due to increasing obesity. Just general body size and height increases with general increases in nutrition, but obesity I think is a bigger factor ;)

The sizes are just so messed up lol.

I've been everything from a size 0 to 20.

I was a true 0 back in the late 70s early 80s, not vanity sizing. I was measured for costumes all the time so I knew I was 33 1/2 - 23 - 33 1/2

I have no idea what size I really am now.

Here in Australia, I fit into a size 14 skirt or pants with a fixed waistband and that is supposed to be a US size 10. I have US10 pants and jeans and they are too tight. I guess I am a US12.

I got down to a US8-10 but have gained back some.

My goal size is a US4

Hey Tomato, I saw your post...eeeep!

As for the sizing thing, it is an EXTREMELY odd feeling to walk into a store and find out they do not have anything SMALL enough for you...and have to wander over to some junior's store or junior's section in some department store. Some stores do not regularly stock under a Size 6, or, if they do, it is very limited stock. I am not THAT small, but I do wear a Size 4, and I keep wondering what really slender woman do! Where do they go? I am 37. I do not want to wear things that makes me look like I am trying too hard by choosing clothes that are too young for me, but sometimes it can be a challenge. I have had the same thing happen to me. I'm over 50, so junior department styles are not always my thing. I bought a pair of size 4 Levi's recently and they are a little loose. Well, you can't find a pair of size 2 ones. Just have to wear them loose. I went to The Limited and tried on several pairs of slacks. The size 2's were again a little loose and the sales clerk suggested I try a size 0. Ended up getting the 2's so I have a little wiggle room. I don't think I'm that thin. I know there are gals a lot smaller than I am. I asked the clerk "Where do those gals shop?" The children's department? I don't have a good sense of my body image yet, so I really can't wrap my head around the fact that I can wear these sizes. I am enjoying it, but I think it is just weird, since I know years ago at this weight I was a 5/6.

I've been a US size 15/16 since I was around 16 (hello type 1 diabetes!) but before then, I was a 6 until Aunt Flo started coming around and then my hips blew out and I was in a 10/12. I only put on around 10-15lbs in that time.

I hope to get back into single digits in the UK at least (add two to your USA size, that's what you are in the UK). 8 here would be a 10 in the USA and I'd be ok with that :D

I am having this problem. I'm five one, 115 pounds. Due to genetics, years of working physical jobs and regular exercise I have more muscle than average and am small for my weight . ( Measurements are 33.5/23.5/32). For the most part I can't shop in the misses or juniors departments because the clothes are too big for me. Sizes 5 and 6 slide off my butt. Sizes 3 and 4 are baggy. Sizes 2, 1 and 0 fit but are extremely hard to find. I mostly shop in the childrens department and have done so for going on two years. In childrens I am a 14-16. A close friend of mine who is very very small ( five feet, 90 pounds) wears a size 10 in childrens.

Three years ago I was 145 pounds and wore a size 10. I hated my body, but I will admit that buying clothes was a lot easier. Never did I imagine losing weight would turn clothes shopping into such a hassle.

I realize that many of you, those who are taller with higher goal weights, or who are just starting out on your weight loss journey might wish you had my problem.

Trust me, you don't.

The largest I've bought is an 18. The smallest I've been in is a 10 this summer. A tight 10 though and they don't fit right now. I can fit into some 12s still but am most comfy in my 14s.

Oh let's see. In my senior year of high school i wore size 14 jeans and L and Xl tops, sweaters, etc. Then Freshman year of college I wore those same 14's and they were so tight I couldn'r buton them so i wore a huge leather jacket or windbreaker everyday all day long in classes and NEVER took it off cause i couldn't button those pants. The end of freshman year (May) I started yet another diet and I dropped down to a size 8 jeans by January and was weighing like 138 pounds, my all time low, I think i weighed more than that in 6th grade, I recall weighing like 146 at the time. Anyway I maintained those size 8's despite bingeing a few times a month until summer. Then when I went away to college for my junior year I was wearing size 16 jeans and was disgusted with myself. I got back down to a 12 by Thanksgiving and then by May had gone back up to a 14. I vowed all summer I would lose the weight before I went back to school for my senior year in August. Um i didn't. I went back to school and wore stretch pants for pretty much the whole entire year and pulled the windbreakers and sweatshirts out. Then I graduated and came back home and didn't have a job so i was working at a grocery store where I ate hot pockets and real A and W Cream soda and 3 candybars a day on my lunch break. I ballooned up to 244 lbs and was wearing a tight size 18/20 stretch pants. So then I dieted again and got myself down to a 14, then 12, then 14, then 12. Got my first job as a teacher and was wearing 14's, joined Weight Watchers got down to a loose 12. Then that summer ate and ate and was wearing a size 16 tight pant by the start of my second year of teaching. Ugh. Hired a trainer and got myself down to a 10, some 8's fit as well. Then started my third year of teaching in an 8 /10 but now am currently a 12, they are starting to get a little bit looser thank God now that the holidays are over and i am working out like a banshee. Anyway I am determined to be wearing size 10 pants by Valentines. Would LOVE to fit into an 8 again but i will be happy with a 10.

My largest was a size 22, although I probably could have fit into a 24 since my pants were snug.

Smallest, size 16 when I lost all that weight a couple of years ago.

Today, size 18 and shrinking.

In high school/college I was a size 6 or 8 depending on the cut. At my highest weight I was a size 20. I am currently in a comfortable 12. Trying to get back to an 8!

size 14 when I was just starting high school. Then later that year I went to a size 16. Stayed there for a couple years and in college it went to an 18. Been at 18 ever since. Have no clue what the sizes were before that though.

In 1988 when I got married (at 19) my wedding dress was a size 5 and my jeans were a size 7 - I think I weighed around 125 - which was a good weight for me.

Now I wear jeans size 16-18W and tops need to be XXL because I don't want anything hugging my now tree-trunk like middle.

I think the longest I was in one size, I was 25-35 and I wore a jeans size 12 and I was perfectly fine with myself at that weight because I looked healthy, felt healthy and life was good. My goal now will put me around a size 8-10 in pants... that may change later on, but for now, I'm going for it. :)
