So I have a question for all of you girls who are 5'8 and taller. When did you start to notice a difference in your appearance? and when did you clothes really start to get loose????

I feel like the taller you are, the more you have to lose to notice! The weight I've lost on someone who is 5'2 would be such a huge loss for them!

I've lost 20lbs, I'm 5'10 and can't notice a darn thing! My bf says in my face and arms, but my pants are still the same size and I dont think they are going anywhere anytime soon! Its very frustrating! I just want to see some change!!

I agree! I've lost about 70 lbs and it's not very drastic. My short (5'3") friend, loses 20 lbs and everyone notices. I think because I'm pretty porportioned because I have height to me.

Here we go again

I don't know, maybe I'm weird. But I have only lost 33 pounds but have gone from a tight 22 to a tight 16. I can tell a huge difference and a lot of people can tell as well.

I'd rather be tall than short anyday.

This sounds like my "When will I lose my tummy" question...LOL

I agree with you, the taller you are the longer it takes for people to tell that you've lost weight. Conversely, that has served us tall girls when we gained all this weight. How many times have you been to the doctors or chatting with girlfriends and someone says, "You weigh HOW much??" 250 looks like a lot more on a 5ft2'er.

That being said, I do understand your frustration. I do believe that some of it is your brain not catching up with your body. Once, in a nother lifetime (I was 24) I lost 70 lbs and honestly couldn't tell. My clothes were 4 sizes small but I looked the exact same when looking at myself in the mirror.

I bet, one of these days you'll see it all of a sudden, your pants will fit differently or your rings will fall off, etc.

When I lost 100lbs a few years back (on Atkins, gained it back about two years after I went off it), it didn't seem like i'd lost any weight until I hit the 50lb mark...which is when my tummy fat started coming off noticeably. :\ I lost my arm fat, neck fat, and -'cause I was walking a lot- my thigh fat.

Mind, I was 299 when I started losing weight, and if someone 5'5" was carrying that around, they would've looked a great deal bigger.

QTest, I almost meet your height requirement so I hope you don't mind me posting. I had lost about thirty pounds before anyone told me they noticed. I didn't tell anyone I was even starting this whole thing. It took me what seemed like FOREVER to get out of my 16's. I can say once I got out of them and the 14's the other sizes have really come off somewhat quickly. In comparison to larger sizes like 14 and 16, there is little difference between a 6 to an 8, an 8 to a 10, and a 10 to a 12. I am in a very comfortable 8 now and some 6's are fitting.

IT was at least 60 lbs before I changed a pant size :( But, I'm weird!

God I hope I get out of my 16's soon!! All I know is that when I was about 175lbs I was still in a 12/14. Its crazy to think that from 175lbs to 240 I only went up a few jean sizes!! Very frustrating. Looking back on my skinny pictures though, I can see that all the rest of my weight I had to lose was still in my lower abdomen, hips and butt so I suppose it's just gonna be a slower progression for me to get into smaller clothes. But d*** my legs looked good when I was 175!

5'8 here. I noticed my pants fitting looser after a month... around 10 lbs. I lost an inch on my stomach and waist. It rly depends where you're loosing it from too I guess right. I'm assuming i lost the ten in my torso, maybe you have been loosing all over, so its harder to see a diff. Oh and I lost it in my boobs too, 3 inches.

I'n NOT a tall person (5'4") but I was down 30+ pounds before anyone could tell I lost weight. I think if you are well proportioned it makes a difference. Also, folks really started noticing when my clothes started changing, I went from elastic waists to tight 22s to baggy 22s with no comments. When I finally skipped 20 and went straight to 18s, folks noticed.

It will happen. At 20 pounds no one noticed my loss either!

It took me 30 pounds to go from a 20 to a 18...and about the same amount of time for anyone to notice that I had lost weight...but then everyone started noticing more and more with every pound lost. Once I started excersising the changes were dramatic and came almost daily! People were not just suprized by my weight loss...They were actually shocked! Seems like some pounds are just bigger than others!

God I can't wait to get to that point! Call me crazy but my mom telling me I look like I lost weight doesn't matter. She's my mother, she has to say those things because she's hardwired that way!! :)

I suppose I started and others for that matter to notice the weight loss was when I had lost something like 50lbs.

The trouble is when you are that bit taller you can carry your weight better but the negative thing is that is takes longer to notice those changes on the scales and translate them to changes in your body.

Hang in there you will get there and trust me once the nice compliments start coming your way they will do on a regular basis which keeps you motivated to reach your next mini goal

This is really not about height, but about sheer quantity of extra weight. If you weigh 250 pounds and lose 25, that's only 10% of body weight; but if you weigh 150 and lose 25, that's 17% of body weight. Yes, the same number of pounds is more noticeable for good or ill on a shorter person, but really this is about the weight lost in proportion to the total weight of the person and what their normal weight would be. (A short woman's normal weight is going to be lower than a tall woman's.)

It took me about 30 pounds before anyone at all noticed my weight loss, and I'm only a little taller than average. Now at 50 pounds lost, it's still not really obvious enough that I've lost weight. (My husband has only recently noticed any difference, and to me I look absolutely no different in pictures.)

I think it took me about 25 pounds before people really started noticing - and I'm 6 feet tall.

When I started at 190 I just felt yucky! I wanted to feel better and didn't care if I lost sizes or anything. I did begin to go down a size about every 10 pounds and that seemed to be when the compliments came as well. Like it was said it's more about the amount of weight you ultimately have to lose and where you tend to lose it from. If you're taller and have more to lose the longer it will take to notice, but it will happen and man it will be worth it. I was 168 the other day but have to wait to see if it sticks till my weigh in Monday... cross my fingers I stay on track!

Hey QTest

We almost have the same stats.

I lost about 17 lbs - And I can't notice a thing. I know that in the past, I had to reach about 216 lbs, to start seeing a change, and by the time I reach 210 lbs, major good things start happening - I start to develop a nice waist, my muscles started to show and I started feeling a little 'lean'. :)

Yea, only 18 lbs to go to reach 210 lbs. :)

Good luck to us ALL!!

For me, it was more like 40 lbs. I think lifting weights and "rearranging" the weight was most helpful because even when I didn't lose weight, people noticed the inches lost.

I'm 5' 9". I found it was over 50lbs down before anyone else noticed. And 70lbs of loss only changed my pant size from 24 to 20.

People started noticing for me I think somewhere around the 20-25lb mark, however I think that it all depends on how your body is proportioned and where it decides to lose the weight. I have lost most of my weight in my upper thigh and area between my belly button and my woman spot. I started losing pants sizes before shirt sizes. I am starting to lose it now in the actual stomach area, and I have been losing my extra set of boobs on my back.

I am pretty much very evenly proportioned, losing weight for me is more of an all over thing than a specific area however some areas have lost more than others. In the long and short of it all it depends on your body type and how and where your body decides to lose the weight.

5'8 here, and it took about 35 or 40 pounds to really notice, so that people would comment I mean

But on the BRIGHT SIDE, we can HIDE 20ish pounds a lot easier than our petite friends, yes??

I'm 5'8"...a few people starting noticing about 30 pounds, many more made comments around 50 pounds and now at 70 pounds gone I get a lot of much appreciated compliments. :)

I agree with the person who said it may have to do with the actual % of weight lost. I'm sure how fast you lose it would have something to do with it too. I'm 5'10 and have lost 15 lbs over the last few months and most people have noticed, and I've lost a size or 2. Every 10 lbs or less is a size for me right now.

It's frustrating when it seems like there is no change but sometimes it takes a while for our brains to register the changes when we look in the mirror. Trust your BF and Mom when they say you look smaller.

Thanks girls! This did help! I'm hoping the next 20lbs brings much bigger changes!! That would bring me almost to the weight I was when I met my bf and I KNOW I looked smaller then!

I'm only 5'5.5" but I had to lose almost 30 pounds to fit comfortably into a 14. I was wearing a 16 when I started. BUT- I am pretty sure that my 16's had "grown" with me, AND they were not comfortable at all. That was part of my motivation! I was upset at the thought of having to go buy larger jeans yet again. So, I refused. Anyway, right now I am wearing a 12 and it fits just fine. We are talking 10 pounds! I was surprised but I'm going with it. ;) I even bought some 10's in the same style because they were on sale and at this rate I'll need them soon.

I agree on how tall women carry their weight well though. I would be thrilled if I was tall enough for 170 to be a healthy goal weight for me!

You know the more I look into my closet the more I'm beginning to think this is true. I have some size 16 jeans that fit. I bought the exact same pair over the summer and they wouldn't come close to buttoning! So realistically I was probably an 18 and now atleast I can get those pants I bought recently buttoned. So I'm making some progress!! :)

Although I felt better with the first ten pounds gone, it took me 50-60 pounds before my pants size changed. :( About the same amount of time before I received my first compliment from someone who wasn't in my inner circle either, coincidentally (or not).

After that though - everything started changing FAST and now I wish people would shut up with their remarks! :) Once I got under 190 or so I noted it takes ten pounds, not 50-60 to change a pants size. Shew.

***ETA*** You'll definitely start seeing BIG huge changes in the next 20 pounds. I don't know your body type but I started much heavier than you, at the same height and started noticing remarkable changes from 220 on down. What fun you're in for!

I lost a significant amount of weight a while ago, and I noticed that it was about 30-35 pounds per size, at least through the size-22 to size-16 range.

Trazey34
03-16-2009, 10:36 AM
I'd say about 30 -35 lbs., somewhere in that region -- but that's also when I bought some clothing that actually TOUCHED me somewhere LOL. Also, it's easier to notice if you have a lot of fat somewhere, like a huge belly out of proportion - once it shrinks people notice. Me, I'm just big all over, not in one place particularly so I'm just getting narrower which is harder to notice if that makes any sense whatsoever

The downside to being tall was that I was able to pull off the extra weight for a long time. By the time I hit that tipping point, so much damage had already been done!

This is awesome to hear!

I've lost 47lbs and have noticed very subtle changes. I know that I have lost ALL over and even my belly. I'm currently in a loose 18 and am about to be in a size 16 soon.

Lol, I have ALWAYS looked at the tall girl's stats on 3FC to see what I can expect coming across certain milestones ;D

I'm still trying to figure out what to expect size and clothes wise down the road, but its a bit harder since I'm 6'2". For me people really started noticing after about 25lbs lost, but the main reason for that was I lost a TON off my face, and that's a really big difference. Now that I'm almost at 40 lbs, its not quite as noticeable. Most of my weight has come off my breasts and up, and my belly button and down. My things are still a little thicker than I'd like, but when I gained my 150 lbs I think only 5 of that went to my thighs. I've always had really skinny legs and so its not easy to see changes there. But I've dropped from a almost 26 pant to a tight 20 and my shirt size is like a 14/16 (XL) around my shoulders bust area but my belly is still huge so I wear 18/20s (2XL). I've lost my double chin though and that makes me super happy. Haven't done my inches measurements but I will beginning of April for 1 month :) I think a lot of it depends on excercise. I've lost 25lbs before and I never looked this good. I'm wearing clothes that I wore last time 50 lbs lighter. I've just never excercised this much and I think inches have come off more so than lbs. I just can not WAIT to get rid of my big stomach roll. I hate it so much.

I think that different people notice different things. I lost over 45 lbs. and my husband never said anything, but he's a dumb@$$ anyway. My dad just bought me a diet book, hasn't noticed a single thing, but he never sees anything past his own sensibilities. One of my friends told me I seemed to be melting after 25 lbs.

My pants size is down three sizes. My seat is loose and the back of my thighs are baggy, but the waist is still the same. My tops are down by two sizes, but I still have to wear the larger size because my arms seem to be the last to lose fat. My bras are fitting better in the back, and my tops are looser from behind. One of the creases in my back, where my double-love handles hang has disappeared.

It's strange where the fat has come off first and where it refuses to come off until the very end. I still have a very flabby, droopy belly in front. If it were my choice, that's what I'd get rid of first!
