Freezer-defrosting mats or sprays: any good?
I just had to defrost the icebox at the office the other day (the ice was about 3 inches thick at its deepest point). We should really remember to turn the icebox off about 1 night per month which would allow any slight frost buildup to melt off (we rarely keep any frozen goods in it). Sometimes in household-items catalogs I see advertised a mat that's supposed to keep frost from building up, or make it easier to remove the build-up, or something. Are they any good? Are they just mats made of some spongey material and would any such spongey mat work (in theory), or do the makers of these defrosting mats claim some secret proprietary ingredient? And what of the defrosting sprays I see mentioned? Are they supposed (emphasis on "supposed", I'm well aware all these products may be a ripoff) to prevent frost buildup or make the frost easier to remove once it is?
