Morning everyone! Much to my childrens delight, we woke up to a couple inches of snow this morning. Somehow that always makes Christmas more real to me.

Let's have a good week everyone!

12-08-2008, 10:37 AM
morning everyone.
we're suppose to get 4-6inches of snow later today/tonight into tomorrow morning. i'll be anxious to see if school is postponed or cancelled. also, jag has his 3yr checkup, so i really don't want to cancel that since his dr is so hard to get in to see. ugh. back later. hope everyone has a good day.

12-08-2008, 10:56 AM
Hey all! Up and at 'em!

It's even threatening to snow/rain here later today and early tomorrow morning.. Would LOVE a snow day.. As tired as I still am from the weekend (and definetely coming down with a cold), I'd love some extra sack time..

Have a great day!

12-08-2008, 11:16 AM
Well, since we're talking weather today - last week I got to drag out some jackets because it was ccccold for us here in Texas. Today is a no jacket day again, probably about 70 this morning when we left the house... but hearing everyone talk about snow makes me jealous, I remember those feelings of being nice and toasty inside and watching it snow outside :) I don't know why I get jealous, I would NOT like to live in snow again!

Good morning friends.

Well, I finally started my outdoor decorations yesterday.......which lead me to guy buy 50 dollars more in lights...........which seems to happen every year. I think I threw a bunch of stuff out last year.......either that, or there is a big box of fun hiding somewhere. Last year, I had this adorable snowman, and someone took his head off..........for I did have to go get a new one. Of course, they didn't have the same one...and I don't love my new one, but it is ok.

It is colder here than usual also, but I don't think we are supposed to get any snow. I know the kids would be in heaven if we did :)

Well, DH has left me for Detroit. Luckily he will be home tomorrow around noon, so it's short and sweet this time. Thank goodness for that.

Kids are driving me crazy. What else is new, right? I will beable to post photos again soon. My digital camera broke a few months ago.....but I just bought a new one on hopefully that will come soon.

I am thinking of a puppy for Christmas..........but I have already shopped for the I will have to wait and see if I have enough $$$$. I am thinking of a Yorkie or a Maltese. We'll see.

Ok, sorry for my rambling...........and thanks for letting me clear my head......once again ;)

12-08-2008, 11:43 AM
I am freezing! our furnace.....water pump??? thingy..... whatever.... broke a year ago. it freezes up and just turns into a large ice block when ever used. we have to fire places and one wood burning stove, plus the other furnace in the Master suite. so we limped along with that last year. but man it is freaking cold in here today. 51 degrees outside, 60 degrees in the house. I think I am going to lock myself in my bedroom!

I am inching dangerously close to the 170s I can almost taste it!!! I am hoping by the end of this week.

12-08-2008, 12:06 PM
Oh, and on the diet front, I made a boo boo that I'm sure will haunt me this week... We watched the De La Hoya fight this weekend and although I saved up and didn't really eat during the day so that I could have some snacks in the evening, the snacking got way out of control and then, being hung over and extremely exhausted the next morning, I took my oldest DS to an ALL DAY indoor soccer tournament, I was afraid to eat because I didn't want to lose it. I finally did get a subway veggie max sandwich in the afternoon, but when I got home I took a nap and when I awoke*** magically*** there was a mcdonalds hamburger was waiting on the counter and no one was going to eat it... so I did and followed it with some left over hot wings. Anyway, this is the first time since starting this journey that I messed up 2 days in a row... and I just needed to confess and get it off my chest, I feel better now and I just need to get right back on, its a new day :)

I'm new to this site and I feel like this is a safe place to vent.

I wish my counsellers were nicer and got more excited when I lost weight. 3 visits I've lost 6.6, 3.2 and 3.4lbs and never once have they made a big deal about it.

Sometimes I wish they would fake it :(

12-08-2008, 04:48 PM
Julie, My DH does those occasional sabotage things.... as soon as he was happy with my weight, there would be magically appearing junk food in the house. Hey life goes on, and there are going to be times when you just go ahead and have the hamburger.... so don't beat yourself up too bad about it. Get back on plan. See if you can fit in a bit more exercise this week to help balance it out..... helps me think twice about eating it, if I think about how hard I'm going to have to work to burn it off...

Lettie, Stay warm! that does not sound comfortable. Hopefully someone can fix your furnance soon.... Hope the scale finds the 170's soon. You've got to be burning of some extra calories there in the cold.

Nicole, do you put up a lot of lights? We have a minimal amount of lights up. I keep thinking I should go and buy something fun, but I went to target and was surprised that they cost that much. I miss having a dog too, but seeing my sister trying to deal with her puppy is enough to make me think again. I forgot how much work they are to train and civilize.

I had a fairly good weekend food wise. Did a bit of shopping and decorating for Christmas, so now I feel a bit less stressed. This year I'm trying for the really simple Christmas, just the minimum gifts, just a few decorations, just taking it easy and trying to just enjoy the people and the season instead of making myself all crazy with stress over all that HAS to be done.

180.4 today!!! woohoo!

Whoohooo Lettie!

BarbarbA- That is my plan this year too. I put up a tree and a yule log, and some fresh greens on the front door. That is all I have planned to decorate this year. Also, I have gotten pretty basic on gifts too. I am tired of so much commercialism and waste. Instead of basing my kids Christmas equalling the amount of gifts they get, (Like 10 each or something) I put myself on a dollar amount budget instead. My son wanted an electric guitar, so obviously he has less gifts than my girls. I am already done shopping, and that is a really good feeling.

Question: How do you all handle the Santa thing? How many gifts are from Santa, how many are from you, etc.

Mikkim - all of us have expressed this at one time or another. I really don't have a good excuse as to why they don't make you feel better about it... BUT, that's what we are here for - Those are great numbers! You are doing really well, keep it up. And, feel free to vent, or just pop in and say hi or whatever here!

On the getting excited front - do you old timers remember the WOO HOO stick? :woohoo: Be careful what you ask for Mikkim - one couselor of mine used to scream WOO HOO and wave this stick around when anyone had a loss. I came close to being arrested for assault when I tried to tackle said counselor to shut her up.

So, you all have no IDEA how painful it is for me to type right now. Every muscle in my body hurts. My hair looks like a rats nest because I cannot get my arms over my head to comb it. As you may recall - I joined a gym last week and prompltly took a Bootcamp class, and had a training session yesterday. :woops: The good news is I can not raise any food to my mouth, so I've got that working for me.

Have a good day all!

And Nicole - I vote for the Maltese!

12-09-2008, 10:48 AM
Welcome Mikkim! This has been a great support group for me through this process - I wasn't really looking for a discussion board when I searched for "LA Weightloss" on the internet - I was searching to see if the centers were really closing! Anyway, I stumbled on this place and have found it to be a great help since my friends and family get sick of hearing about eating and losing weight :)

Barbara - I took your advice and went for a nice workout last night, I was kinda nervous because my membership expired at the end of September, but they don't really check - I just told the kids to head straight for the daycare center and don't stop unless I tell them to ;) I'm going to try to sneek in for the whole month and then re-join in January. At my work they give us money to join a gym, but the money doesn't come in until January and they will not reimburse you for any fees incurred before then.

Kim - that's funny about the woohoo stick! At my center they had a bell - I hated when they were overzealous with the darn bell! I prefer a quieter congrats, personally. And on the gym - work through the pain, you'll feel fine in a couple of days...

Katie - I usually do a budget rather than number of gifts. Since we have a big family my kids get plenty of stuff, so I don't put my name on anything - everything from us is from Santa. My 11 yo just started figuring this out last year - he's had so many questions that I finally had to break it to him this morning because I have a feeling that he's being teased at school - he said the kids were telling him that only 2 year olds believe in Santa! He was fine with hearing the truth, but I had to hold back tears...

Julie- My son figured it out this year too. He has been really good about respecting his sisters' right to figure it out themselves, though. In fact, it has been kind of fun to let him in on a few little secrets for the girls. We usually give the kids one big gift each from Santa, and their stocking, then wrap the rest from us. Their year, though, I can't seem to pick the Santa gift, since everything is so personalized.

Ouch, Kim.. Take it easy or you'll burn yourself out! The fastest way to giving up the gym is to overdo it early on and take the fun out of it..

Welcome Mikkim! I'm sorry your counselors aren't more supportive.. That really can be a downer.. Like Kim, however, I was more used to the staff going ape when I'd have a success.. We had these horrible little singing/dancing James Brown statuettes in the weight in room and if you posted a good loss, they'd hit the button and it would sing "I Feel Good".. Being a kind of shy person, I found it horribly embarrassing. (I know gang... ME? Shy??) So as soon as they'd hit the button, I'd hit it again to shut it off.. After a while, they knew not to hit it when I did my WI's.. :D

Slowly but surely getting rid of the leftovers from our party on Saturday by Liz and I bringing them to our respective offices.. Yesterday was the big vat of homemade Chex mix.. Today it's the pumpkin roll a neighbor made.

A family friend is now a PT at our gym, so Liz, who is becoming increasing frustrated with her struggle, is going to sign on with her and get some good work going.. This family friend also used to be very heavy, but has really done a great job in taking it off, so I'm encouraged that Liz will succeed.

Have a great day all!

Hi Everybody,
My name is Laura and I'm new to this site also. I just rejoined LAWL (only the cost of bars, which I have). I am hopeful that with some suport this time I may be successful. I just really want to learn moderation and the proper things to eat. I'm really short, so every pound shows up on me. My kids are getting bigger (4 and 7) and I really feel like it's my responsible to teach them to be healthy. Anyway, I'm so glad I found all of you. I'm less than 1 week in and I've already lost 2.2 pounds. I know it is mostly water weight in the beginning, but I'll take it.

12-09-2008, 11:41 AM
Welcome Laura! Us shorties need to stick together! I started out heavier than you, but I know exactly what you mean about how the weight shows on a small frame!

12-09-2008, 12:45 PM
Welcome Laura!
Well guys I leave tomorrow for holidays again. I sure am glad I cancelled all my summer holidays as the winter ones are much more fun when the weather is crappy. Sunday we had a record snowfall so it's time for me to leave this nasty weather. My husband gave me an early Christmas gift yesterday. I got my own Ipod Nano. I am so excited because I don't have to listen to my teenagers tunes anymore when I excercise.yippeee... Last night I was busy downloading all those good 80's tunes(and a few new ones). I made myself a promise that I will excercise at least 20 minutes everyday whiel I am away on the cruise even if it's just going for a walk. I haven't gained or lost any weight in weeks so I need to maintain....
Well I will talk to you all when I get back. Have fun with the Christmas shopping everyone. I will be doing mine on the 24th this year!!! haha

Hey guys ;)

To answer your question, Katie.......everything here is from Santa, except usually one gift, and that is usually clothing or p.j.'s or boots or something like that. I am serioulsy thinking of trying to move towards the 1 gift from Santa though. All three of my older kids are getting one item from Santa this it might be a good year to ease into that tradition. Who knows. I do know I have to do inventory. With 6 kids to buy can get crazy. I forget who has what, and this year, I haven't made a list.....oops. With the girls only getting 1 gift, that makes it somewhat easier.......but I am afraid the boys have too many I will have to do some sorting and probably returning.

DH is supposed to fly in from Detroit anytime. I am anxious for him to be home. It is raining pretty good here today............I wish it was snow.....for the kdis, you know.

Kim.....DH really would rather have a Maltese than a Yorkie. I was really suprised how expensive they are. Also, I was reading about I really have to wipe it's a$$ after it goes number two? And do you wash Dodger's (did I remember right?) face after every meal? I need to be sure what I am getting into. I used to have to wash Maggie Mae's face daily.....but I rarely had to wipe her a$$.

Welcome to all of the newbies. Our forum is usually much more informative than it has been........we've all just been a bit distracted lately. If you have any speciific away.......we will try to help as much as we can.

Ok, have to run..........DS is in my junk drawer..............eeek

just popping in to say hi. this week just sucks. don't feel like explaining, but it just does. friday is my big 20wk ultrasound.

12-09-2008, 03:51 PM
Nicole – I also have a Maltese. I keep her hair shorter, so no, I don’t wipe her a$$ or her face for that matter!! I find that keeping here hair like a “puppy” makes grooming so much easier because they have very fine hair that mats easily. And yes they are expensive. When I got my dog I was also deciding between a Yorkie and a Maltese but I chose the Maltese because I think they’re generally a quieter dog, at least they’re supposed to be. Previously I had a Pomeranian and if you’re familiar with them they bark a lot, so I wanted something that was the complete opposite. My dog will be 10 in March and she’s going blind, but otherwise she still has a ton of pep. People that don’t know her usually mistake her for a “puppy” because of all her energy. When I say “energy” I don’t mean it in a bad way because she knows when it’s appropriate to sit and be pretty or to run around and play like a puppy (I think this is another trait of the Maltese bread).

Hi Everyone, newbie here! I was planning to join LA in the New Year, but of course they closed down! I did get ahold of the plan however, with all the color plans and the fast forward and take off options. This may be a crazy question, but is there a difference between the Take Off juice and the Fast Forward juice? I have the Fast Forward juice and was planning on using that with the unlimited protein/green veggies plan for the first two days and then go on to the red plan. Does this seem right? Current weight is around 235, goal is to lose 65-80 lbs

Afternoon friends! Just doing a quick drive by! I have been so busy since my bar results came in. Thank you all so much for your support and congrats. Means so much! I've neither lost nor gained since vegas and turkey day. I'm back to being POP!!! Hope you all are doing great this week!

12-10-2008, 11:34 AM
Yeah Lettie!

I was 1.5lbs down this morning! Which puts me at 5.5 total in the last month, not bad for having a pretty off plan T-giving weekend!

WELCOME Laura and Kristin! I am jumping back on the wagon after an 8 month hiatus, so I'm just getting started again.

Kristin-I believe the juice is the same, but the plans for FF and TO are different. Yes, start with 2 days of FF juice with unlmited protein and veggies. You are on the border between the Red and purple plans, unless you are not doing the lites. I would start with red and see how you do for the next 4 weeks.

Laura-yeah!! You are doing great-believe me if you keep it up it will be coming off every week!

Jillian-hope this crappy week goes by fast for you!

Hi Dan!

I'm late, late for work! This is my last week as a clerk, next week I start as an attorney. I have my first cases on Wednesday!!!

Happy Wednesday to all!

12-10-2008, 11:35 AM
Lettie-I just clicked on your thumbnail daaaaaaym girl!!! :0)

12-10-2008, 11:50 AM
Thanks for the help Amylou! I will have a supply of the lites so I will start off doing those with the red plan and see how it goes. I'm glad I found this place. Not having a centre will make the support and accountability part harder so this forum is great!

12-10-2008, 12:07 PM
hello everyone. just thought i'd stop in and say hi. gosh it's so cold here today. it was about 5 degrees when i left the house today. burrrr. and it's only going to get worse.
only a few more days until my 20wk ultrasound. i'm excited to see the baby and for DH to experience it too, since this is his first baby and my third. :) the baby has been moving around quite a bit lately too.

amylou--can't wait for you to start your attorney work! i'm super excited for you! yay!

12-10-2008, 12:41 PM
Hi Amy, thanks for the support. I weighed in at my center this morning and am down to 153.2 (Yeah!). That makes 3 pounds the first week, which is kind of unheard of for me. Being as short as I am, if I lose 1 pound a week it is a successful diet. I'm doing pretty good. I feel hungry a lot, but I think that comes from using food as comfort all of the time and not really listening to my body. I'm trying to do that now.

Jillian, sorry it's so cold there. Here in SC today it is 70 and rainy if you can believe that. They say it will be 70 here tomorrow also. We are just enjoying it for as long as it lasts.

12-10-2008, 12:59 PM
Awesome Lettie! Keep up the momentum!

Amy - great job maintaining through everything you've got going on right now!

Welcome KristinX :)

Jillian - did you say 5 degrees???!!! It was 32 here today with little snow flurries - the kids were ecstatic that "Christmas is here"! I'm glad that it happened, even if it is only one day and we should be back in the 70's tomorrow.

Ok - so here's the deal - today we are going to an italian restaurant for my unit's Christmas celebration luncheon - here is the menu for all to drool over:
First Course
• Appetizers
o Bruschetta
o Spinach & Artichoke al Forno

• Salad
o Caesar
o Maggiano’s

Second Course
• Pastas
o Lasagna
o Fettuccine Alfredo, Broccoli
• Entrees
o Chicken Parmesan
o Salmon, Lemon & Herb

Third Course
• Desserts
o NY Style Cheesecake
o Profiteroles, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Hot Fudge

I'm choosing the Salmon... wish me luck :hun:

Dawn.....thanks for your input about the maltese. I just made an appointment to go see one on Friday. There are two breeders I am looking at. One of them has a male, and one has two females. I haven't talked DH into spending the $$$ yet, but I am working on it :D!!!

Kim.....DH really would rather have a Maltese than a Yorkie. I was really suprised how expensive they are. Also, I was reading about I really have to wipe it's a$$ after it goes number two? Uh - No. To all of the wiping and washing! I couldn't be bothered nor would he put up with that!

I keep him in a puppy cut, so I don't have to wipe, wash, or rarely comb him. When he was younger (than the 15 he is now...) I used to bring him to get groomed every 5 weeks, that was great. Now that he's old I do it myself - he was getting way too stressed at the groomers (his problem, not the groomer) I probably bathe him once every month. Right now he looks a little raggedy, so it's time for a trim. Once when he was sick I had to wipe his nether region, but NOT DAILY, LOL!

And, yeah, I'm sure they are expensive. I know that Dodger was - even that long ago. But he's been worth every penny.

12-10-2008, 02:57 PM

ok, i just made an appointment to go see a 12 week old male. i made a couple of calls this a.m., and there is a lady with two 8 week old females, but everythign I have read says they need to stay with their mom until 12 weeks........and the female lady says they are already separeted from their in she isn't even in the home.........that seems kinda shady. anywhoo, we are going to go see this little fluffball at 6:30, but I am not, and i repeat, NOT bringing him home tonight. I may leave a deposit, but I will wait at least until Friday to think it over...........stop laughing.

Post early and post often...

And great job to you too Amy!!!

My plan to get rid of the post-party goodies is working.. Hardly any of the queso I put in the office conference room is left... In fact, barely a ladle full, so I won't feel bad about tossing it! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Thanks all!

my 12s now fit just right if not slightly slipping! so those 10s are right around the corner I figure.

Just found out that we are going to go with our one set of best friends that we have gone to florida with for two years now, to see our other best friends that moved to ohio, in three weeks. we are all going to meet up at a timeshare and just hang together for the weekend. so. I have 3 weeks to hit it hard. Last time our friends in ohio saw me I was 205! I can't wait. I wish I could get in those 10s in 3 weeks, that would be ultimate. but not sure if that is going to happen over the holidays and all.

And by the way... have I mentioned how hot you are in that profile Dan my man? oh wait... yes I have! :D

12-10-2008, 09:45 PM
Lettie, You go girl. I found that it took a lot fewer pounds to go from size 12 to a 10 than from a 14 to a 12. So you might be surprised.

Nicole, When I was young we had a maltese poodle mix and that was one sweet doggie.... I wonder how bad my DH and cats would freak out if I just came home with one? OK... I know my DH would freak big time, as he always claims he didn't realize he was marrying Ellie Mae... Like just owning two cats qualifies a woman for that.

Dan, Sounds like you are doing a great job on eliminating the junk food from your house. Has Liz gone to the personal trainer yet?

Hey Jillian, I hope your week is looking up. Good luck with the sonogram tomorrow. Your pictures all make you look just glowingly healthy and happy.

Julie, Hope your lunch went well.

Welcome Laura and Kristin!

I've been closer to POP than I've been in awhile, even for the weekend, but I keep finding myself eating overly salty things and not drinking near enough water, so I'm not feeling the progress that I should. Oh well, that is something to focus on. Less coffee, more water... I need to get back down into my size 8 clothes, as I've gained a few pounds in Hawaii, and then a few more when I had a death in the family, and then a few more with a few trips down to California and Thanksgiving, and now I just need this trend of finding 2-3 pounds and then not going back down to end... since this has added up. Did anyone see the article on Oprah? I feel for her, as it is so hard to keep weight off and keep it gone for forever. Did anyone watch the Biggest Loser? I'm looking forward to the finale. I'm hoping that anyone but Vickie wins, as she just didn't come off as a nice lady. I wonder how big of an uber witch I would appear to be on a show like that though... So I suppose we should not judge....

12-11-2008, 01:01 AM
Wow, it's actually kind of nice that the boards have been slow this month-I got to catch up!

I can't believe how sweet you all were about the bar! I can't believe I stayed away from here for so long!

Today was kind of an icky day. First, a lady hit my car in the parking lot at work. Ugh! She was nice about it (I had to track her down as apparently she didn't realize she had actually hit me) but it's such a hassle. No crazy damage, just a big scratch along my drivers door. But, could be worse. No one hurt! Car still drives!

Then, a few hours later my boss told me that HR wasn't going to let me take cases on Wed. They have to process my paperwork and get me on the new payroll and I wont be "legit" until next Thurs at the earliest. When I put it in perspective, it's no biggie, but it kind of burst my bubble!

I've been working hard on thinking positive (thanks Katie!) so I tried to talk myself out of this "bad" day, but I still came home and whined and whined to poor DF. I almost cried, but luckily he nipped that in the bud with a lil pep talk, and a reminder to stay positive.

I came super close to POP today. Not enough veggies as I was on the phone with insurance for my entire lunch break, but I did well. I just had a half a beer to take the edge off, but I think it was worth it!

Nicole-thank you!! I have to say I was overwhelmed with how proud my parents were. They really threw me a great party in vegas (my dad bought cristal and had it on ice when I got there?! Crazy as he doesn't even drink!) and drove all the way up here for my swearing in ceremony. It's been a really great month! I read some of the older threads---thanks for missing me! Oh, and you are the devil with your doughnuts and holiday baking teasers!!! JK of course. Why do I have a feeling you came home with a white furball tonight? Do you have a name in mind? So exciting!

Hi Dan! Thank you! I agree--good pic! How is Liz doing? I am SO glad our office is not doing any sort of holiday celebration. My office manager does bring in cookies....I'm going to have one, but that's it!

Kimberly-have I mentioned I am SOO glad you are already back and ready to be POP again! That weight is going to melt off for sure! Isaiah is perfect!

Ok-time to clean the kitchen and get to bed!

POP thursday!

Kim, Dawn, or anyone who knows.......I need puppy advice. I went to a breeder last night to see a male maltese who is 12 weeks old. He was a very nice puppy, fun loving, cuddly, quiet.......but there were a couple of things that concerned me.
1. There were a LOT of puppies there. She says she has a partner that is about 2 hours away and that she gets the puppies when they are almost ready to go to their new home.....
2. The puppy looked big. I read that a maltese should be around 2 lbs at 12 weeks.........could she have been lying about his age or are some just bigger than others.
3. She cut his hair really short and he had pretty bad tear stains. Is it common for them to have tear stains at this young age? All of the pictures i see online do not look like him.

Now, this lady seemed really nice.........but I am inexperienced in matters such as this. I did put down a $200 deposit, cuz he is a nice dog.......but now I am super nervous. DH liked him pretty well, but I just didn't get that, "I am in love with this puppy," feeling. Do you think it was because he was not the little furball I had expected? I can go look at other puppies, but if he is a really nice dog.....I don't want to miss out on him. I don't want 3 months of super puppy cuteness to be more important than the overall tempermant of the dog.............

Oh, tell me.....what do I do? And, if I decide not to get you think she will give me my check back?

Ok, I have to do some more homework.....

Hmmm, so are all of the puppies the same breed, or are they different? Does it feel puppy farmish to you? Nicole, you have good instincts, and I think that you ought to trust them here. If something does not feel right, don't do it. You should be able to meet the parents of the puppy, then you can judge how big the pup should be. Sounds like she did not have the parents on site though. Call her and tell her that you have changed your mind first thing this morning. A good breeder would not want her puppies going to a place where they were not wanted. If she does hassle you about the money, just call your bank and put a stop payment on the check.

Does anyone know what will happen if I put a 1.5lb pork roast double wrapped in foil in the crockpot on high and won't be able to turn it off until 9.5 hours later? I didn't think too much when I left, but now that I'm at work I am worrying that the kids will be eating pork jerkey sandwiches for dinner...

12-11-2008, 11:59 AM's what I find to be the biggest teller when it comes to buying a puppy...
How concerned was the breeder with what kind of dog owner YOU would be? Did she ask your plans on training, about your home? A good breeder wants to ensure their puppies go to good homes. I literally had like a job interview to get my dog, and I also had a written health guarantee. Also, if it is a purebred maltese it should be registered...I know that by law that has to be done in Canada, not sure about the states though.
The first puppy I got, I simply replied to an ad in the paper and bought a dog...he became sick within days, spent a fortune at the vet and eventually had to be put was a hard lesson, but I was much smarter the second time around and found a great dog is over 4 now and we still keep in touch with the breeder because the breeder cares about how her pups are doing.
I don't want to discourage you from getting this dog, because in most cases, most puppies will turn out to be wonderful family pets but it never hurts to be cautious!

Kristin- Very good point. We used to breed Great Danes, and I was very strict about who bought them. They are such giant dogs, and a big responsibility. I gave people the third degree, and sometimes told them no if I thought that it was not a good home, or if they did not seem to really understand what they were getting into.

12-11-2008, 12:47 PM
Nicole, be very careful. I bought a pug from a puppy mill once. there were many signs and I just didn't listen to my head. my heart wanted to take him home. He didn't know how to walk on grass, don't think he had ever done it. He was 12 weeks old. He didn't know how to relate to people, he looked like he desperately wanted to be loved but then was afraid to be close. we had him for just a month or two and he died of botchulisim. my advice is just listen to what your gut says. if you feel like it is right then it probably is. but if not, then listen to that! you are about to make a 10-12 year commitment so you want it to be right.

12-11-2008, 12:59 PM
Nicole – here is my long story…Your situation sounds similar to my Maltese story. I had my heart set on getting a Maltese so the first add I found in the paper, I answered. Within a couple of days I met up with a couple, not at their home, but in a public park and they had the entire litter of Maltese (and Yorkie) pups with them. They put on a great, professional front and told me all about the pups and the parents and said I could see the mother if I wanted to. The dogs where all registered, tattooed, they had a strict diet for them, the pups where clean and the couple seemed to care for the dogs. So after an hour I decided on getting the smallest pup in the little, took down all their information again and left with my new puppy. Within a few days I took her to my vet and she had a laundry list of concerns. I had decided to call the people back to ask them about some of the items and the couple was very rude and unwilling to answer any of my questions. I then decided that I just couldn’t keep the dog, canceled the check, and called the people back again. I told them I was returning the dog. Of course they wanted nothing to do with her anymore, but once I told them that I cancelled my check they where pissed. I meet them again, returned the dog, and told them that if they would have some of the health issues taken care of I would possibly buy her back. I had had the puppy for a week and was starting to grow attached and I was concerned with what they would do with her, that’s why I offered to buy her back. The couple took care of the hernia surgery and called me back saying their vet checked her all out, didn’t find any other concerns and that my vet must have been talking out of her a$$. They even said their vet was threatening to call the licensing board on my vet. So I decided to get her back and when I went back to get her I learned that these people where in fact puppy brokers and not puppy breeders. The hernia surgery looked like they did it themselves (even know they had papers from a vet), they didn’t have the mother to the puppies and they told me that this puppy will probably just get destroyed if I didn’t buy her. Well with a threat like that I couldn’t leave the puppy this them. I felt terrible for “supporting” the puppy brokers who probably got the litter of puppies from a puppy mill, but at the same time I couldn’t bare the fact that this puppy would have been put down, even it they just led me to believe that. After all this happened I did a ton of research on Maltese dogs and just puppies in general. After talking to the president of the tri-state Maltese Association, I learned that this area is the largest region in the U.S. for puppy mills and that most reputable breeders in this area have a hard time selling puppy because of this.

I should have seen all the red flags and should have insisted on seeing the mother when they first offered, but they put on a great front and I was naïve and really wanted a puppy. Now I just look at it as learning process and I’ll know what to do and ask next time.

So after this long winded story, I would say go with your instinct. My puppy was about 10-11 weeks old when I got her and she was tiny (but she still is only 5 lbs.). Do they have papers on the puppy? Why would they cut his hair already? It took months after I got my pup before her hair was long enough for a bow. Her hair was also quite thin as a puppy. I don’t think I would question the possibility of having tear stains, but you would think they would have cleaned the puppy if they where trying to sell him.

Sorry this really got long!

On a side note..I was reading earlier posts about cleaning the dog's a$$ and yes, unfortunately I have had to do this several dog is very furry and is gorgeous but occasionaly she has a problem with's not every day but yeah's not pretty but I have stopped gagging! I figure with this practice changing babies diapers will be a breeze however!

thank you all so much for your input. I had no idea the puppy world could be so dark. I have only owned one dog....and she came from a family run breeder who had the momma and poppa on site..........all seemed well. Anyway.....sorry to hijak the thread here. I haven't called her yet, but I am going to stop payment on the check and then call, I guess. I hate making anyone unhappy, but this just feels right.

Ok, I'll be back :)

Omg, Dawn and Lettie. How terrible for both of you.

Nicole- The puppy world can be terrible. However, not everyone is terrible. Find a local breeder who has the parents on site, and breeds because they love the breed. You will find a wonderful puppy that is perfect you. Don't lose heart!

12-11-2008, 02:29 PM
Dodger was 1.75lbs at 12 weeks old and he has been 6.2lbs for the last 14 years. (If only I could have that consistent of a weight!)

My MIL bought her "Maltese" from a breeder who had her meet in a parking lot at night. Well, this "Maltese" is about 20 lbs and looks nothing like Dodger - more like a Bichon-Maltese mix. Personality of a Bichon (crazy!)

When we picked out Dodger, he was so calm I thought there was something wrong w/him - but the others were spazzy, so I chose him. He's very low key - but still playful at times.

Everyone's right - trust your instincts. The right puppy will be there, just maybe not for Christmas.

12-11-2008, 05:02 PM
Jillian, Half way done already! Time flies when I'm not the one who is pregnant.

Nicole, Good luck with the puppy business. I'm sure you'll do the right thing.

Amylou, 1.5 pounds down is great. Keep at it, as I'm sure any gal who can pass the bar can focus enough to lose weight if she makes it a priority. The hard part is making yourself the priority.

I was reading an article about how addictive sugar is. I've often felt that in my family we are not alcoholics or addictive personalities towards anything but sugar, but on sugary things, My gosh I don't think cookie monster has anything on us.... So it makes total sense to me that perhaps certain people have a bigger tendency towards sugar addiction than others. Not that the article says that, but if there is a gene for a tendency to be more addicted to alcohol, then it makes sense to me that there could be one for not being able to eat just one piece of candy.

12-11-2008, 05:56 PM
Eureka, I've got it! I asked my mom for a list of my dad's old records so that I could locate the CD versions of all these, but she responded that he has most on CD already and he doesn't really like to carry CD's in his truck anyway - too much clutter. She then said that his favorite gift from me was when I baked a basket full of goodies... I don't bake anymore, so I started looking online for a fruit of the month club or cookie of the month club, and do you know how expensive that is?! So I decided to commit to sending 2 dozen cookies, or a coffee cake to my dad at least every quarter this year...wish me luck!

Hey guys! I am glad to be back… I just got so overwhelmed in the last two weeks I haven’t been able to get on here. Everything was going so well, then I called my girlfriend from HS to see if she was going to our bookclub last Monday and well, it turned into a week long 24/7 job. She is (I think) getting divorced from her husband. DRAMA. And he won’t let her see their daughter.

Basically I was gung-ho on helping her, but she just started taking advantage. She would come over, eat all our food, drink all my bottled water (well, take a few sips and then not finish it- AHH!!) and then continue to see him. I neglected my own life including my own marriage to help here and in the end, it’s not worth it. Long story short, I am avoiding her now.
My DH is on a project in Lancaster, PA for work so I spent Monday thru today with him there. He’s on 2nd shift, so my life shifted to that, including eating horribly. I have felt so sick all week and am so glad to be home in my own home, and back OP.

Mikkim- Welcome and CONGRATS on your losses!!! Keep it up!

Jillian- How are you feeling? How’s everything going with the kids?

Lettie- Way to go on your loss and new entry into the 170s!!!

Amylou- Congrats on your promotion! That’s so exciting!!! Hang in there! I know it’s easy for other people to say, but what is a few days after all you went thru with school and studying for the bar?? Congrats on your loss too!! Any wedding plans??

Nicole- good luck with your puppy!!
If I don’t check in tomorrow, have a great weekend guys! Off to bed…

Good luck, Jillian. I will be thinking about you all day today, and I cannot wait to hear how your ultrasound goes. It is so exciting, and it doesn't matter how many pregnancies you have had, it is such a joy to get that sneak peak of your new baby!!!

So, I apologize for totally blowing everyone off this week as far as WL suport. You are all working so hard, and I am so proud of all of you. I promise to get myself back on track here soon and work at participating in a more constructive WL support mannor. name is Nicole, and I'm a sugar-holic. It is so bad. You know those Queen Ann chocolate covered cherries that are like $0.97 that very few people like that are in stores mostly from Thanksgiving till New Years? Well, I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. It is discusting. But I love them. Me, and all of those old ladies sort through all of the boxes to find the dark chocolate ones. Sometimes I have to get pushy and check those Grannies. JUST KIDDING. My mom says people who crave sugar are often children or relatives of alcoholics or alcoholic wannabes. I can see that........and addict is an addict, right? Well, it may not be that simple.......but it is an interesting view.

So, I did it. I bought me a tiny white little fluffball of a puppy last night. Oh, she is just a doll.......and she kept me up all night long, as a new puppy should. We haven't named her yet, but I am seriously thinking about Fluffy. I really like Penelope.....but I don't think DH is too crazy about it. Snowball is also on the shortlist, but the girls don't love it. I will ask Andrew and Adam this morning what they think. They have not met her yet........we didn't get home with her until about 10:30 last night, and the boys were sleeping :) I will post pictures in a little while..........DH is sleeping and my camera is in our room. Baby girl weighs just under 2 lbs.......and oh, just wait till you see her. I was leaning towards a male.....but there were no males in this litter, and she just stole our hearts. My girls ere thrilled beyond belief. Bethany even told me that I could take all of her Christmas presents back, cuz she was the best gift ever. What a sweetie, huh? Makes me want to go buy her more

Ok, I have to get moving here.......I have to get something done while the kids are still home.........Lord knows I will be doing nothing but chasing this baby girl around all day :)

12-12-2008, 09:03 AM
yay nicole! :) congrats on the new puppy! :) where did you end up getting her? was it from the same lady or did you call and tell her you changed your mind? how exciting! a new puppy!
thanks for the well wishes today. my appt is at 1pm(central time), and then i have a few errands to run after that and then my regular check-up around 430pm, then the kids are sleeping over so i'll try and report as soon as i can. :) DH is super duper excited to see the baby!

amy--so sorry about your friend taking advantage of you and putting you in quite the situation. ugh. glad you're deciding to ignore her and make you and your marriage a priority over hers. pretty selfish friend, if you ask me.

anyways..i'm gonna have another cup of coffee and then go to grocery store for a few things. hope everyone has a good day today! and be sure to check the thread over the weekend, if you want a u/s update from me! :)

Nicole - Congrats on the new puppy! I can't wait to see the pictures. I just love puppies (& I'm a bit partial to Maltese). I even said to DH last night that we should get another puppy for the kids. See my Maltese is MY dog and my DS has been asking for his own puppy for the last year. I know it wouldn't be fair to my dog to get another puppy, so we'll wait. But a puppy is kind of like a new baby. Whenever I hold a newborn, I want another baby and whenever I see puppies, I want another puppy! I told DH that we'll probably have to get two puppies next time, one for DS and one for DD!

Jillian – good luck at your ultrasound today! Make sure you bring some tissues, I always cried out of happiness at my ultrasounds. I think even DH had a tear down his face at our DD’s ultrasound.
