It doesn't feel much like Winter around here . . . it's pouring rain and the high is predicted to be 13C / 55F today. :dizzy:
For some reason, I'm working on the second day in a row with a high FBGL :( -- yesterday was 8.1 (146) and this morning is a little better at 7.6 (137) but not a lot. Hopefully things will improve, but December is seldom one of my better months.
See you all later . . . :grouphug:

Funny weather here for December - just around the freezing point. They keep predicting snow and then it doesn't happen.
I am going to start recording my FBGL vis a vis what I ate for dinner. It's a drag but I want to know what's happening. I am dropping weight very slowly. I hate being our of ONEderland after it took so long to get there. I might even reinstate my ticker for this month.
Big triumph today when I resisted the Chinese Buffet although I walked right past it twice on my shopping trip. Of course, it helped that I'd had a tuna on ww bread and a skim milk when I got groceries! Planning is key.
I did not make it to Bulk Barn to get the stuff for my Christmas goodie baskets. I need to make and give them before Christmas and it's best if they are made and bestowed the same day!

For some strange reason, my FBGL is still running too high and now that I'm almost finished with the wrapping (hope to get things mailed tomorrow), I'm also developing that almost overpowering urge to bake, bake, bake that hits me every year about this time. Too bad it also comes with an urge to eat, eat, eat. Definitely not designed to keep either the blood sugar or the weight under control.
Our very strange weather still continues too -- unseasonably warm and very dull. Forecast is calling for mosgtly sunny today, but I've not seen any sign of it yet.
Have a great day . . . :carrot:

BGL too low this morning - I need to add starch back into my evening meal.
Had quiche (no crust) and salad for lunch with the quilting group today and resisted a brownie/ hot fudge sundae that my "friend" was trying to share with me. She doesn't believe that No means No! I finally asked her if she had any insulin with her - that stopped the discussion dead in its tracks.
My ticker is back and so is my better attitude about healthy eating. Cold weather is NOT an excuse to eat comfort foods when I do have furnace, woodstove and electric heat plus sweaters and warm, cuddly dogs.

Another sunny and mild day -- but very, very windy. At least the FBGL is a little better this morning at 6.6 / 119.
Outsmarted myself this morning -- thought I had gotten myself a wonderful treat the other day -- a can of French Vanilla flavoured coffee. Brewed it up this morning and it smelled fantastic; both in the can and in the pot. BUT -- for me anyway, that was the end of the fantastic. Did not like it at all. Guess I'm just a boring coffee drinker. Passing it along to my neighbour -- hope somebody there enjoys it.

Hi ladies!!
I am new here I have been a diabetic fo 13years. I take oral meds. Last month I had my dr. appt. my A1c was 7.4. I am working to get better control.
I asked the dr. about byetta and she gave it to me. After I picked it up I saw all the new warnings attached to it. I have only used it a few times because I recently had gallbladder surgery(2 weeks ago) and my numbers have been great lately. Those of you who use byetta what is your opinion concerning it? Thanks for any help. The dr. told me it is my choice whether or not I want to use it.

:welcome: Mercee. There is a thread on Byetta in there that you might like to check out BUT please do keep posting with us on this support thread.
FBGL not good this morning - I guess cheese and crackers with my neighbours and then meatloaf for dinner was not a brilliant move! Today will be better and exercise is definitely on the schedule. It's snowing really hard right now so winter is here no matter what the calendar says! Shovelling is cardio, right? And then there's :tread: !

Hi All!
Brrr...it's cold here in Northern California, too, 39 degrees (farenheit) at 8:00 pm, that means I'll be scraping ice off of my windshield in the morning! We are in a drought, but I see that we have a chance of snow showers in 10 days, so I'm doin my snow dance! :carrot: My kid wants to snowboard, and I want her to get the exercise!
Meowee, I went to a cookie exchange party the other night, oh yeah, potluck, just what I needed, baking and a buffet, THANKS A LOT! However, I made my snickerdoodles with 100% whole wheat flour, 2 egg whites, substituted half the earth balance margerine with applesauce, and used 1/2 xylitol and 1/2 sugar. They were actually tasty!
I've been so good about being vegetarian since last April, and although I haven't lost a ton of weight - I haven't exercised a lot - I've shrunk, gotten smaller. I've been bad about testing and taking my meds lately - gotta stop that vice!
Here's to a good week - and I'm gonna go take my meds before I go to bed tonight!

Hi, all. First day back at work after two weeks off. Only thing I missed was access to the computer.:D Didn't do a whole lot, just slept in and did some chores and errands. Did go see the new Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. It is terrific. Now tonight I'm having a gastritis attack and didn't do anything to provoke it. Only had tea and yogurt today. It's always something.
Anyway, hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving.
Rosie - just read your post. What a scary thing to happen. I'm glad you found the problem in time. My old landlord used to give us new batteries for the smoke detector every November, but the new one could care less. I now have to remember to buy my own.

rosey, I'm so glad you didn't have a fire! A friend at work, her house was a total loss from an acquaintance smoking on her wood deck, while my friend wasn't home, the lady felt "cornered" when my friend unexpectedly came home (she is a closet smoker) and left her cig on the wood deck and left. My friend lost everything...but thankfully her fur babies were all spared, and material things can be replaced... and thank you for the welcome, rosey!
meowee, sorry that you are having back pain, it can be so debilitating!!! But glad you are back enough to type us a hello!
rosettastone, howdy, neighbor!! How'd ya like the Academy of Sciences? One of friends says that it is better than Monterey Bay Aquarium...which I love!
Well , I walked 10 miles on a parade route for my daughter's youth group last Sunday, after standing for 3 hours waiting for it to begin! I'm feeling it today...:p

Hi there . . . :grouphug:
My back is feeling about 80% functional this morning and the FBGL was 6.7 / 121 this morning. A little higher than I'd like, but not bad considering the cookies I ate yesterday. :o
Our really strange weather continues. After sunshine and a high of -9 yesterday along with lots of snow on the ground; today we are supposed to get +13 and bunches of rain and wind (that's 16F yesterday and 55F today). All the snow is almost gone already. Actually the dry cold of yesterday is probably better for the aches and pains than the dampness of today.
Nothing big in my plans . . . still have a little wrapping to do (local stuff) and will continue my reading and back resting that's been the story of my life for most of the week. Still taking the Robaxicet, of course. The added muscle relaxant in it really does seem to help a little.
Have a good (and safe) day everybody . . .

Hi, all. We're continuing to have chilly weather, which is fine with me. MyBGL was 108 this morning. I had stopped taking the glyberide for awhile because I was experiencing early morning lows, but the BGL went way up. So now I'm cutting the pill in half and it seems to be working well. Up to my eyeballs in work - have to catch up with two weeks of emails. Ugh.
Rosey - I pmed you.
Ducky - welcome to the thread. The academy of sciences was terrific. They have a 3-story rain forest, an underground aquarium and a new and improved planetarium. I spent the whole afternoon there. It's best to go on a weekday when kids are in school. Not so crowded. You get $3 off admission for using public transportation or have a AAA card. They have a nice cafe there too. I've never been to the Monterey Bay aquarium so I can't compare.
Meowee - sorry you're under the weather. But sometimes it's good to have downtime to catch up on your reading.

Good Morning Sweeties . . . :grouphug:
Back is still about the 80% mark -- guess I need to learn to be patient and enjoy the slower pace it's forcing on me. FBGL was a nice enough 5.7 / 103 this morning so at least that seems pretty stable.
Won't be doing the normal Thursday Mall Crawl . . . partly because of my back; partly because nothing will be moving very fast or very far around Nova Scotia today. Why do the weather forecasters always seem to get it right when they are predicting nasty weather? Yep, all the snow melted in the rain by yesterday and then the temperature dropped and it changed to that most dreadful of winter stuff -- freezing rain -- and that kept up all night. I'd much rather have the snow.
At least I still have electricity and heat and that is not true for a lot of other places around the Maritimes this morning. Thought my telephone had been knocked out first thing but that turned out to be just a minor 'cat'astrophe. Don't know what they do some nights and probably better that I don't.
Have a great day . . .

Strange weather continues -- it's raining, of course, but high is predicted to be around 15 to 18 C (60 60 65 F). Currently my front porch still looks a bit ice-covered, but it is melting fast.
FBGL is 5.8 (104) this morning. Have to admit that I'm reallhy not eating too well and consequently I'm avoiding the scale. Just keeping the blood sugar undeer control will keep me fairly happy during December.

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
I know that we Crazy Canadians are famous (or maybe that's infamous) for talking about our weather a lot; probably because we get so much of it. :dizzy:
AtlantiCa is on the same roller-coaster. Yesterday we broke fifty-year-old records by hitting +20 C (68F). Today -- our high is going to be -2C (+28F) with a little snow before we also head back to about +10/11 C (+37F) for tomorrow. Oh well, guess I should be thankful for small mercies since I know things are a lot colder in lots of places -- for example, Alaska.
Happily, may FBGL is still doing well even though I have been indulging the tastebuds a little too much; FBGL this morning was a very nice 4.8 (86)
Well, I really have to go out and brave the cold and the crowds for a bit today since the larder is looking a little bare and I do have one more gift to get. So I'd best get moving in the hopes of beating the snow. Hopefully, I'll resist the urge to buy butter so I won't be able to come home and make shortbread.
Have a great day . . . :carrot:

Hope your back is A1, Meowee. I woke with a pulled thigh muscle yesterday morning but it's easing up today. I've no idea what brought it on unless I had some wild dreams that night.

Second day of 7.1 (128) . . . I really must stay out of the chocolates. Weather has bounced back to the warm side again and of course it also bounced back to dull and damp too. I much prefer yesterday's cold and sunny.
I don't think the back is ever going to get to A1 again, RUTH -- very frustrating. Hope both the thigh muscle and the scale are good to you this week.
See you all later . . . :grouphug:

Woke at three and was sure my BGL was either very high or very low but it was 5.8. WTF? I puttered around and felt kind of fuzzy after a while so I guess it dropped maybe the elevator dropping is what woke me.
Weight is still the same - and there I was hoping to be in the 180's by my Christmas trip. Ah well. I may go back to the doc in January and see if he can give me any suggestions. I'm pretty sure it's just the pre-Christmas socializing which seems to involve a lot of wine. I turn down the insistent cookie pushers by asking them if they have insulin handy! That scares them and they shut up.
Today I'm not having any wine and am pushing the fruits and veggies. Thigh muscle is back to it's normal flabby self so I will be out and about.

Good Morning . . .
At daybreak . . . wet, warm, windy; by this afternoon . . . white, cold, windy. At least the FBG was a little better this morning at 6.1 (110).
Two things to take my mind off the silly chronic lower back pain today -- didn't sleep well and woke up with a sore neck -- the gigantic filling in my tooth that had the root canal in April fell out. Doesn't hurt of course; just annoying; but I was lucky and the dentist had a cancellation for this afternoon. Guess I'll have to start saving for a crown though. $$$$

Not much exciting here either, Meowee. Sorry you still have back and tooth problems. Getting older really sucks!
I managed a perfect on programme day yesterday and was rewarded by a one pound drop today. :carrot: Fruits and veggies plus shovelling slush and ice off the walks and steps probably helped. Our weather has moved on to you - we had a warm wind that dried up the water before the cold hit again so I'm glad I cleared the crud away.
Off to do the Good Food Box Programme shortly. I wonder what the wholesaler sent us this month. It's like Christmas morning and amazing to see what you get for ten bucks! We started up this programme to try to get people to eat better and it's working pretty well - except for the people who take their Romaine lettuce to the diner and trade it for a donut! Those people are the diabetics that we are trying to target. The dietitian and I will never give up though - we refuse to substitute iceberg lettuce for the good stuff.
I'm outta here to lug veggie boxes off the truck at 10!

Back is still annoying, tooth is okay but jaw aches a little from the pins he stuck in before refilling the tooth but at least it was all done at no charge since it was less than a year old.

Yesterday was a terrible blizzard that totally closed Nova Scotia -- seriously, you couldn't get in or out of the Province by land, air, or sea. Today is gorgeous and sunny and the wind is mostly non-existent. Both of our major airlines have added extra flights today in an attempt to clear the stranded travellers out of Halifax before the next storm hits tomorrow evening.

I've been away for a few weeks. Mostly trying to sort out my diabetes care. I'm now seeing specialists at my local hospital. They've dropped down my fast acting insulin and bumped up my Lantus. I had a pretty ok holiday, matter of fact, I've dropped 15lbs since December 10th. My doc's say its all because I was taking too much insulin. She said I might lose much more weight since I used to be relatively thin before diabetes.
Blood sugar levels aren't down where I'd like them to be, but its a really great improvement on the 29's and 25's I was getting in the mornings. I've gone from those numbers to 10's to 15's, which is a huge leap for me.
bit too tired to say much more now. My rabbit is driving me insane, she will not stop biting her bars at night, and it makes me and hubby very..very annoyed and tired. :( We've tried everything with her and we just can't take it anymore.

Casandra, glad your numbers are better! About the buns....I've had rabbits all my life....nocturnal little buggers! Do you cover her cage at night so there's nothing stimulating her? How about something quieter to chew on like an alfalfa block? Or even cardboard? Can you remove her cage to the furthest room of the house at night, and shut that door and your bedroom door? How about a white noise machine? :dizzy:

akrosey49. Ruthxxx, Jeanne88, has it warmed up at all? It's about 46 degrees f here in Northern California in the daytime, and it's been about 27 at night. Took my little teen chickie an hour up the mountain to snowboard, it was all of 7 degrees at the ski resort, brrrr!! That's quite cold for here! Ruthxxx, thanks for the update on meowee, it's good to know that she is okay.

Hi there . . . :grouphug:
Wow, the Twelve Days of Christmas were definitely not very kind to my internet life . . . no idea what was really wrong since I managed to weather a couple of really nasty storms during the period without losing anything but the intenet. Probably shouldn't say that too loudly since we have another storm moving in tonight/tomorrow. :yikes:
Anyway, sorry about being missing . . . I've really missed everybody a lot and hope to get caught up with my reading over the next couple of days. In the meantime, I imagine my buddy RUTHXXX has been keeping an eye open around here.
See you tomorrow, gang . . . :crossed:

Well another storm has come and gone and today is full of gorgeous sunshine and I really hope it lasts for a while -- afraid I'm getting very tired of this Winter already.
Weight is definitely up a little from November, but guess it could be worse (of course, it could also be a lot better). BGL has been all over the map throughout most of December and the first few days of January as to be expected with not so healthy eating routines. Today is looking good with a 6.3 (113) first thing this am and a 4.4 (79) just before lunch. Hopefully I can keep this together too.
Have a great rest of Friday . . .

I'm here, meowee! Was up until a bleary 2 am last night writing a wedding flower estimate for a bride (my side job). Welcome back to internet world!
We've had terrible, thick fog for the past two weeks, it was lovely to get up this weekend to blue skies. They even say it may warm up to 70 degrees next week, and no rain in sight for the next 2 weeks. While I will be reveling in the sunshine, it's bad for California, because January is when we get most of our rain and snow to store for the next year, and we've been in a drought, and January is usually our rainiest/snowiest month. AND, I have to hope it doesn't get too warm up in the Sierra Nevada mountains (think Lake Tahoe area), because if the snow melts up there at this time of year it will cause a lot of flooding down in the flatlands. So, it's nice, but it's very worrisome.
Ackk, rosey, wish I could send you some warmth! Hope the cold lessens for you.
jeanne, I hate those high morning bs, don't you? Hope they come down. LOL you would understand the one is too much, eh???? You probably see a lot of folks for whom that's true. I've been having that issue lately, but with food. Staying on the vegetarian wagon, but you can still eat badly that way, and bread is my siren.
Me, I've been very, very bad for the past month. Not checking my bs, having control issues, not taking meds. I've not felt well as a result, my kitchen has been a mess, so I've not apportioned out my meds weekly like I used to. I need a kick in the bum to get back on track!!!

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:

Bum kicking needed here too, Ducky. I've been taking my meds but not testing every morning. I just know I'm way too low by the fuzzy feeling some mornings.
Weight is "stable" - that means no frassing loss! :( I think my body wants to hang onto its insulation in our very cold weather. It's supposed to get even worse starting on Wednesday and then I'll pass it on to poor Meowee for the weekend.
Here's to a healthy week! (That's Crystal Lite in the glasses!)

Hi there . . . :grouphug:
Wow is it ever cold . . . 'warmed up' all the way to -25C / -10F in the sun this afternoon. Know that's nothing compared to your temperatures, ROSEY, but for us this is unusually cold. Our normal highs for mid-January are right around the freezing mark.
Finall got the new furniture for my sunroom/family room delivered and set up. Now, once I get some new window treatments organized, I'll be able to decide if I love it or not. Got rid of the couch entirely and just have four big chairs. It's definitely a bit different.
The cats know that they do not like it . . . but that's just because cats hate any kind of change. They'll be fine in a few days.
My back has been bothering me again and so has my right ankle. Consequently, my blood sugars are all over the place. HJopefully everything will calm down to normal again soon.
See you later . . .

Hey guys, I really need to start posting here more often! DH and I are trying to get everything packed up now, we've just bought a new house...I say new, but it's older than my parents, so...yah, but it will be new to us!
My next hba1c will be on the 13th of Feb, but they're going to do the finger pricker machine instead of a whole lotta blood taken. I'm excited! My weights been hovering again, and I've all but given up drinking everything but water. (soda is a nono and I only have it when I eat out on those rarest of rare occasions. I'm really picky about water, I can tell the difference between filtered and unfiltered water, to me, its the difference between a centimeter and a mile)
I'm pondering speaking to my doctor about SAD, a seasonal disorder that causes fatigue and other symptoms due to lack of sunlight.
blegh. Can't wait to get moved in ^____^

JEANNE: Seems like our problems tend to be similar... Did the Byetta stop working for you like it did me? All of a sudden, my BG just jumped up and I have been struggling with it since. I went from 6.1 A1C to 9 too. I am taking Januvia 2x and Glimeperide 1x at night. This new doctor also put me on Actos in the morning. I don't like it much...expensive and I don't read much positive about it. He told me if this did not work, he would have to put me on Insulin...and since Insulin is worlds cheaper, I said ok! He wants to wait to see if this combo does the trick, but it has not helped much. I have another month before I go back. Maybe all the stress in my life will settle by then. I think it may help to get the bg down some..but who knows? I wonder if my pancreas is just giving up?!
meowee
01-17-2009, 11:41 AM
Hi there . . .
Yep . . . you know that stress can do terrible things to the BGL, ELLEN, but I think you might be better off with the Insulin. Although ACTOS worked for me for quite some time, I never really felt good about it after all the Avandia scares. Actos is the same family.
Now I'm back on Insulin -- LANTUS, which you take once a day and really doesn't have a peak period so doesn't cause the drastic nighttime lows I used to get with my previous insulin -- and I'm quite pleased.
Of course, shooting insulin does nothing good for the weight loss effort.
Freezing cold here again today, but once again it is nice and sunny. Tomorrow is supposed to be our last day of really, hideously cold temperatures. On Monday it's going to go up to almost the freezing mark and, of course, they are calling for another 6 to 8 inches of snow. At least at the current temperatures it's too cold for it to snow.

Good morning! Still plugging along. I go for bloodwork on the 28th and am hoping for an improved reading. I definitely have been "over-carbed" lately. Cold weather seems to make me want starchy things and the scale shows it although my ticker is not lying today.
Today will be a quiet day at home and I'm considering making a weekly food plan - on paper, rather than online. I can't hang my monitor on the fridge in the kitchen but sure can put a sheet of paper there and check off stuff. Veggies have been neglected this wee so I need to focus on them.
Hope your weekend is going fine and you have decent weather.

Hi Everyone! Casandra, welcome! It's a friendly bunch of chickies here. Weather here is very dry and springlike. Not good for our drought or our plants, which I'm afraid will start budding and then get hit by frost. Although, I can guiltily say I'm enjoying short sleeves and sandals midday (sorry, not trying to rub it in, I actually enjoy winter, and we desperately need snow and rain here in California).
Well, I finally went on Fitday, and miracle, it says I'm no longer morbidly obese, just at the top range of obese. Hooray! I figure I can keep better control of my out of control eating and non-med taking if I own it. I was a little bad today with the food, but I logged it in anyway and I'm gonna just have salad for dinner so I don't go over my calorie allowance (that's a cool tool - the calorie balance thingy and calorie restriction). It also helps me because I can see that although I blew it, I can control the rest of the day and still meet my caloric and carb goals.
Morning fast bs was 136; 117 at post prandial.

Hi there Sweeties . . . :grouphug:
Our weather is pretty much back to seasonal norms -- quite a bit warmer (just below freezing most of the time), but also quite a bit less sunny, too. Oh well . . . win some, lose some, I guess.
My BGL is a disaster and it's not what I've been eating so much as a stress reaction to pain from this stupid SI back problem. Pretty much all I've been doing for the last couple of days is taking too much Tylenol and sleeping a lot. May take myself to the walk-in clinic tomorrow since I know it would take me at least two weeks to get an appointment with my own doctor.
Gee, that's definitely enough of my complaining . . . see you later . . .

Aw, Meowee, so sorry you are having the darned body problems. Too bad we can't get complete transplant - this from someone who crabbed and complained so much about a knee replacement!
FBGL seems to be improving so I may keep rather than cancel next week's bloodwork. I am such a wimp! Actually writing down ON PAPER WITH A PEN seems to be helping with the food. It was too easy to plan on FitDay and then forget the extras that snuck in like crackers and cheese :to keep the dogs company" when they ate at five. Managed to lose a pound - hope it stays lost!

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
Back is still bothersome, but a little better. Stupid ankle is also driving me nutzie. Geez, maybe I'm getting old or something. No . . . never going to happen.
Woke up this morning to overturned chairs and an overturned garbage can under the sink with three cats pawing through it. Guess I'll get a can with a lid for under there -- although I imagine Purrecious will eventually manage to get it open, it might just slow them down for a little while. As far as the chairs are concerned . . . hmmm, maybe I could just nail them all to the floor.
Anyway, by the time I cleaned up the mess and finally checked my BGL it was 9.3 (167). Must remember to check first thing before I start working at stuff. :dizzy: It will go down as the day progresses.
Nothing too exciting around here today. Right now the sun is shinming but there is snow in the forecast for later this afternoon. Hopefully not too much.

Hi ladies.
I am new to this particular forum but thought I would check it out. I just started posting again after a 2 year absense in the 100+ forum. I really relate to you ladies talking about the weather. It has been a wicked cold winter here in Minnesota. I spent the first 45 years of my life in California and have never totally adjusted to the cold here.
I was diagnosed about 2 years ago and have been able to keep my A1C in the 6's with my best efforts at carb counting and exercise. I have become complacent lately. have not been testing and while not eating indiscrimanantly have abandoned any carb counting efforts. I get my A1C checked tomorrow and am definitely a little nervous about the results. I am hoping the few pounds I have lost in the last few months will work in my favor.
Best,
Denise

Hey where is everybody else hiding today ?????? I miss you all.
Nothing exciting in my world -- it's still cold and it was another sunny day. It's also budget day for the Canadian government and it's supposed to be a doozy, so guess I'd better go watch the report.
But, before I do, here's a good little article that was in my e:mail this morning . . . tends to reinforce the idea that this is a lifelong journey and we cannot expect to be perfect all the time . . .
Someone once said that the best way to deal with a temptation is to yield to it! Staying on a diet forever is extremely hard, so the first step is to recognize that at some point you will give into temptation. It's natural, normal, and even inevitable. You can manage your splurges if you accept that reality and don't feel guilty about it.
To maintain a healthy eating plan with occasional indulgences, try practicing the 3-to-1 rule: Each time you have a food splurge, follow it with 3 equal units of time in which you eat a more sensible, predictable diet. The time period in question can vary. It could be a single meal, a day, even a weekend. For example, if you eat voraciously for a day, eat conservatively for the following three days. Remember, good diabetes control is a game of averages, not a game of perfection!
Have a great evening . . . :grouphug:

My sugar level this morning was horrendous at 9.8 (176) :yikes: It was much better last night and I really do not know what is going on. I'm not eating poorly and I really don't think I'm going low in the middle of the night, but something is happening here and I definitely don't like this trend.
I wonder if Lantus Insulin sometimes has a problem of not working well over the longer term? Guess I'll have to look into that.
On a lighter note . . . I thought it was Saturday when I first got up this morning . . . hey, doesn't really matter when you are an ORF. I get two Saturdays this week.

This morning 7.1 (128) -- almost acceptable. I'm beginning to think I am going hypo in the middle of the night without being aware of it. Last night at bedtime I had a very large bowl of oatmeal with an apple just sort of as an experiment to see if I'd be high or low this morning.

Hi, all. You may have wondered where I disappeared to. I just got back to work today after a month of medical leave. I was in the hospital for ten days due to a bowel obstruction caused by a hernia. They said surgery was too risky so they just didn't feed or water me for about a week until the problem resolved itself. When I left the hospital my feet were swollen the size of sweet potatoes and I couldn't get my shoes on and walking was hard. after about 10 days of that my doctor prescribed a diuretic and my feet were back to normal in a few days. I am very tired and my gastrointestinal system is delicate. I'm sure eating a lot less but don't feel like I've lost much weight. In the hospital they gave me insulin and my bgl was all over the place. It's back to normal now. I did a blood test last week and will the get the A1c results when I see my doctor on Thursday. I only have computer access at work and I sure missed it while I was out. Well, it's good to back.
Rosey - I hope your dh's surgery went well and he recovers quickly.

:grouphug:
Oh ROSETTA, you have had a time of it, thank goodness everything is back to normal.
And ROSEY, hope DH has a good outcome.
Life is pretty boring for me -- the nasty wind has died down a lot today and we re having another gorgeous sunny, but cold, one -- going to get my haircut today and still dithering about changing the style a bit. Hey, after all these years, the hair pretty much does whatever it wants to do anyway.
FBGL is still running a bit too high, but mediocre okay. At least the back is doing pretty good. Of course, tomorrow is garbage day, so will have to see how it feels after that.

I don't want to be insensitive, but I have a question re: my bgl and I trust other diabetics who've had experience.
If my bgl is running a bit high, can I get the low sugar shakes at 126? (Dr. wants me at 100.) I'm trying to figure out the cause of these shakes.
meowee
02-10-2009, 04:02 PM
You should mention the problem to your doctor -- everybody is different, but I really doubt you could be having a hypo at 126 (7 on the international scale).

Nothing exciting on my agenda for the weekend anyway and that suits me fine. Need to finish up some knitted slippers I promised to a friend -- hope she enjoys all the cat hair thast seems to be getting knitted-in. Should make them all that mjuch warmer, right.
BGL is still bouncy, bouncy -- happened to check at 2am this morning (hey, I was up to the bathroom anyway) and was sitting at 4.8 / 86; so I ate an apple and a little cereal before I went back to sleep and by 7 am it was 9.1 / 164.

Sounds like your church-friend has that mistaken lay-man's opinion that diabetics have to stay away from sugar, and only sugar . . . oh wouldn't it be great if that were only true.
Woke up very early with what sounded like a freight train trying to get into my bedroom, but at least my 5 am BGL was a nice even 6.0 (108).
The howling winds have been the only thing consistent about this storm. It's been switching back and forth between rain and snow all day. About the time that darkness settled in again I think rain has been winning by a bit. Of course, who knows what I'll see by daybreak because it's not over yet.

eh today was horrible & I need to vent. My blood sugar was low today at work I started feeling light headed and like I might just passout & was like ugh I think my sugar might be low. But it was almost time to go home so I didn't do anything about it even though I had some cereal & a granola bar in my purse + juice or milk around.
As soon as I got home I checked and was at 58 by this time I was actually shaking and it was difficult to even test my blood sugar because it was hard to steady my hand! My husband gave me a pepsi and I ate the granola bar & felt better right away and retested 15mins later and it was up to 88.
This is the first time it was ever that low before it dropped down to 63 but I was at home. I feel stupid for not doing something at work when I felt sick. My health is important and I shouldn't feel weird about it :( Though I feel good that I obviously knew something was wrong but I need to handle it better.
And yesterday after work it was lowish at 69. and I wasn't feeling too great.
I think they have me on too much insulin in the morning perhaps. and maybe I need to eat a bigger breakfast. Like an hour to an hour & a half after I eat I go to work and am on my feet and I think right now it is just too much activity for me and it drops me fast.
Luckily I go to the doctor next week so I can talk about it but sigh it is just so much to handle and a bit scary. and on top of it I actually feel bad somehow for drinking the pepsi and going off plan. plus I didn't record my food today or yesterday because things were kindof chaotic.

Hi All,
Good to see that people are hanging in through this incredibly long winter. We had something like 8"s today. Luckily I didn't have to go out.
Blasphemie - I had my first low blood sugar experience earlier this week. I started feeling light headed in the shower as I was getting ready to go out to lunch. I think the culprit for me was that I had very little carbs for breakfast (just a cup of a very meaty chili no beans). Ineed to remember Balance, Balance and more Balance

Today it is pouring rain. the real lion is due to arrive overnight tonight with an instant freeze-up and then at least three, maybe four, days of heavy snow. All I can hope for (as well as maybe the forecast being wrong) is that the lamb will definitely be here for the end of March. :crossed:

I have one finger (index finger, right hand) that got quite bad like that a few years ago when my BGL was consistently running way too high. It came back, mostly, but still tends to feel a little 'different' from the others at times.

Hi all. Our rain has stopped for the moment, although it's overcase and cool. My BGL is doing quite nicely lately. Must be doing something right. My medical bills from that hospital stay are beginning to trickle in and my new health insurance leaves a lot to be desired. Every doctor who eyeballed me while I was there is submitting separate bills and the insurance is deducting all sorts of stuff which I will have to pay. I have a PPO now. With my old HMO, I would never see a bill (although they would have kicked me out of the hospital before I was ready to go. lol). I sure hope President Obama is successful with that Universal Healthcare.

I woke up to a full double roll of TP unfurled throughout the house; every cabinet door and drawer in the bathroom standing open and stuff scattered all over the room; and just so the rest of the house wasn't ignored--the garbage under the kitchen counter (yes inside the cabinet) was upset and a couple of artificial plants in the sunroom had been dragged around a bit; guess the cats thought they needed to be relocated.
BGL is still bumping along and I'm still doing well in the eating department. Today I've been having a bad case of the hungries but so far so good. :crossed:

Hello -
My name is Mel, I've been going to these forums off and on for years now...I forgot my old name though...I used to be quite a frequent poster...i had posted in the thousands!!!
Anyways, I am 28 years old...used to weigh like 350...over the course of several years I dropped 50 pounds without even trying. I was always thirsty, always using the bathroom. I knew what it all meant, but I didnt want to deal with it.
Last week they tested my BS and it was in the 400's - so apparently I have diabetes. My doctor sent me to get blood work done, and I go back tomorrow to see what we're dealing with. I am worried, what could see need to see in my blood work??
Anyways, I joined weight watchers, and started exercising, and i've already lost another 7 pounds...plus my symptoms are gone...i hope my bs is in order now, and i hope i have not spoken too soon!!
It is nice to meet you all!!

Hi, Mel. Welcome to our thread. The blood work you are getting will probably include the hemaglobin A1c, which measures blood sugar over a period of months and gives the doctor an average. You didn't mention whether the doctor put you on meds or not. You have made a good start by trying to lose weight. If you lose enough, your diabetes may be controlled without medications. There is a lot of information posted on permanent threads in this forum that you might want to check out.
Keep up the good work on your diet and let us know how the blood work came out.

hey, thanks for the welcome!! I do recall the nurse saying something was high..whatever number she gave me was in the single digits, so it might have been what you said!!
the doc basically said "there are some good things, and there are some things i expected to see" but that's about it.
she put me on metformin, 500mg twice a day. i am scheduled to go back in three months...i hope it aids in my weight loss.
all my diabetes symptoms have disappeared, fatigue, thristiness, peeing...is it possible that one week of strict dieting could actually do that?
it seems too easy to be true...

Hi there . . .
Second day of great sunshine but very cold and very windy weather. Busy day for me yesterday but I did keep the eating in check. Today will be hibernation-mode for me -- not of course that I'm superstitious or anything.
:welcome: MEL . . . glad to have you joining us. Yes, a week of careful eating and taking Metformin can do a lot for BGL control . . . but please don't forget this is a lifetime journey you are now on. Keep on doing the good stuff, chickie.
Have a good day, gang.

Hi Meowee...thanks for the welcome.
Well I started taking my metformin again today. i was on it about four years ago, and i recall having similar symptoms.
Needless to say i've been getting a lot of use out of my bathroom this evening :( for some reason i am not on the extended release version. i wonder why. do you supposed there are benefits to taking the non extended release one over the ER version?
meowee
03-13-2009, 10:44 PM
Afraid I have absolutely no experience with extended release Metformin. The only advantage i thought any ER meds had was to save having to remember to take multiple separate doses. So maybe it only relates to how much you are taking?

Adding my :welcome: to Vermont Chick. If it's any consolation, the "digestive upset" Metformin side effects do end. I'm on 500 in the a.m. and 1000 at night and have absolutely no problems. My HA1C results are now in the "controlled" area so it does work.

hey ruth -
yeah, a few years back i was taking 1000mg ER - i do recall the side effects waning, but never completely going away :(
Right now my intestines are totally spazzing out - they feel like they're spasming - it kinda tickles more than it hurts...is that too much info???

I've been taking 2000 mg of Metformin for years now and haven't had even any twinges of discomfort since the first few months. Hopefully your tummy will calm down too.
Absolutely nothing new in my world -- BGL is still bouncing; eating levels have been good all month so far. :yay: The carbs did sneak up too high for a couple of days but at least the calories stayed in the okay range. Haven't seen any scale movement for a couple of days (connection??) now, but I have faith. In fact, I have faith in all of us, Chickies. We will win this race as long as we keep on doing our best.
We do have mostly sunny again today and the temp is expected to get up slightly above the freezing mark. Not too Spring-like yet, but I have faith in Mother Nature too.
Hope the rest of the weekend is fine for you. :carrot:

I AM SO DEPRESSED!! I have been dieting faithfuly and strictly for ten days. I have been on metformin for two and a half days now.
I tested my bs a few minutes ago, and I'm at 320!! I was at 420 when my doctor diagnosed me.
I am so worried that my bs will never be in range - is it possible that diet exercise and metformin just won't do it for me??
I am also scared because all the postings say you shouldnt exercise if your BS is above 250, so I'm like 'what do i do? i need to lose weight?'
does it take a long time for metformin to kick in and lower your blood sugar? and is it safe to exercise you think??? :(
Ruthxxx
03-15-2009, 03:24 PM
Patience, Sweetie. It takes a while and it is more of a slow modification than a kick-in. I hadn't heard about no exercising with higher BGL readings. You'd think exercise would help. More research needed, I guess.
Ruthxxx
03-15-2009, 03:30 PM
Metformin gradually increases your cells ability to use insulin in your blood. It will take a while and doesn't really "kick-in". Be patient and know that you are on track.
As to exercise, I'd check with your doctor. I don't recall ever being told not to exercise with hight BGL; in fact, exercise lowers BGL.

so here is an update. i checked my BS before exercise, it was 262...and then did just 15 minutes of light exercise (basic step for ten minutes and then brisk walking for 5)..it brought my BS down to 216!!! :carrot:

Another sunny day around here but the temperatures are going in the wrong direction and it's getting colder again instead of warmer. I do have to go out, so guess I'd better get moving. This is School march Break week so I would imagine most of the places I have to go will be pretty crowded with lots of waist-high kids.
I'm still staying very much on track in the eating department but I'm still very much off track in the BGL battle -- having difficulty getting below 9's (160). Don't know if it could be connected with the increased levels of pulmonary edema symptoms I've been having or, if after 20 odd years of living semi-successfully with type II, my pancreas has decided to simply shut down (unfortunately, it does happen). That would mean a much more stringent Insulin routine. Guess I'll see what the doctor says next Monday.
Have a great day, :carrot:

Ok, day four on my metformin. i increased my dose to 1000mg yesterday, and my symptoms (diarrhea, nausea) seem to have already passed.
however, i checked my BS this am and it was 373. I am SO discouraged, and I feel like I will never get it under control. How long is this supposed to take? I don't want to die of stroke or a heart attack or heart disease. :?:
I know that I need to give it time, but I have already drastically changed my life, i worked out for about an hour yesterday because I was testing my bs before and after exercise. I DID determine that just 15 minutes of light exercise brought my levels way down.
1. How long does metformin take to lower your BS? Can it take weeks?
2. How many grams of carbs should I be eating?
I just feel discouraged, like I can never have bread again because it will just raise my already high BS levels.

Yes indeed, I definitely get my highest readings in the morning and especially if I sleep in a little later than normal; but, as mentioned before my FBGL has been dreadful lately. This morning was a little better at 7.6 (137) as compared to yesterday's 9.0 (164), but still not good.
How can you tell it's ST. PATTY'S DAY???? Well the bars in Halifax opened at 7 am this morning and the patrons were already lined up to get in. :yikes:

I got up and did some exercise, then checked my blood sugar, and it was around 261...pretty damn high still.
I have vowed to not check it for another week or so, because it is just stressing me out.
I am sure I went years with a high blood sugar, and it's going to take some time to level them off.
I hate to think of all that time that I must have gone undiagnosed. I was away from the doctor for nearly four years.
Yes, today I could tell it was St. Patty's day - all the kids were wearing green (I work in an elementary school).
This morning I was nauseated, I wasn't sure if it was the metformin, but I think it was my IBS acting up again...it hadn't acted up for nearly two weeks.

03-17-2009, 03:59 PM
Hi all! VermontChick, metformin causes nausea and diarhea in 56% of the people that take it so both are likely culprits.... and don't discourage so easily, I got diagnosed with type 2, 3 years ago and am still working on getting lower readings, the metformin alone wasn't working as well as it should have for my sugars and I had horrible gastric problems the whole time (3 years of the runs was all I could take), so I've switched over to the needles because they are getting me better results and I FEEL better which is also important. Good sugar control if you feel like crap all the time isn't really the point I don't think.
And way to go on the exersise.... that's where I'm having trouble getting motivated.... and exersise really helps to lower sugar!
Meowee...Adorable kitty!! ;)

Re: Metformin
I real problems with the generic. The gastrointestinal symptoms kept getting worse. I stopped taking it and the symptoms went away. I started taking the brand name Glucophage, have been taking it for years, and have no problems, except maybe a little gas now and then. My insurance won't cover it so I get it from a Canadian pharmacy through a senior program. If your symptoms don't go away, you might want to try the brand name. The advantage of metformin over other diabetes medication, including insulin, is that it doesn't make you gain weight. Good luck.
Vermont chick: If your morning sugars are so high you should consult with your doctor. You might need to increase the metformin and/or take another medication along with it. I also take glyberide for that purpose. Used to take Actos, too, but no longer need it.

Hi there . . .
Another sunny day and we may work up to above freezing temperatures, too. Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy but quite a bit milder. We'll see.
FBGL is back to 8.6 (155) this morning. Of course my major chocolate meltdown yesterday may have contributed. :dizzy: Just worked out my mutritional averages for the month so far and happy to say my 2286 total calories yesterday did NOT screw things up too badly. I'm still in good shape for the month. Average total calories are 1444 and percentages are running right on 40% carbs and 30% each for fat and protein. Sometimes you just get lucky I guess. Yes, I do believe in the 'cycling' philosophy whether you are tracking calories, points, or something else. I just don't think it needs to be all pre-planned. For me, and most of us (probably) , it just seems to happen.
BTW, I thank you FEISTYCAT and so does my calico, Purrecious. for the compliment. Hope you'll drop in to see us from time to time.

Hey ladies -
Thanks for the advice. I was just diagnosed last week, and I've barely been on the medication for a week now.
My doctor wants to see me again in three months. I assume this means that the meds take a while to work.
That was my question, I have been checking my BS dozens of times and am finding it's usually in the 200's.
I am exercising twice a day, but I probably could cut my cards down anymore. The thing is, I am starting to get so sick of just eating vegetables and protein. I eat fruit too, but I am so grossed out to think that I cannot even eat bread anymore.
In your experiences with metformin, does it take a long time to lower blood sugars? Maybe if I lose a bunch of weight my BS will get lower...?

Meowee, you are getting my yesterday weather. Today it's grey and showery but still will be relatively "warm". We are carrying on with above freezing temps and sunshine tomorrow. Could it be that Spring is early? This time last year we had 20" of snow. Anyhow the robins are back - maybe they know something because they are two weeks early this year.
Weight is finally a good solid 201.0. It's been dropping a tenth of a pound at a time - too slow but I guess I put it on slowly too. BGL has been OK these days - nothing too low or too high unless there was a reason for it - the four-letter word is carb!
Got a Good Food Box order of veggies yesterday and am going to try to work in more. I am such a veggie slacker some days. I did have cucumber with my breakfast and plan a large salad with HB egg and turkey bacon for lunch. Sigh! I get so sick of this planning crud but ti's necessary.
Keep on keepin' on,Chickies!

hello ladies,
i know i am 'allowed' to have breads, but i am still new into this diagnosis, and i am afraid to.
i haven't seen my diabetic educator yet (apointment is next month).
i am still trying to figure out how many carbs i am allowed to have...i have seen varying numbers - like someone said you can't have more than 40grams a day - how do you live off of that???
on webmd it said to make sure that 50% of your calories came from carbs...so i figured 750 calories a day are from carbs, ie 150 grams..and then another site said to keep it to around 20g or less per meal...
what do you guys do?
meowee
03-18-2009, 07:54 PM
wow . . . I do not know where you are getting those 20 and 40 a day numbers; please be more specific . . . ????
I've certainly never seen anything like that on either the American Diabetes Association site or the Canadian Diabetes Association site. You definitely cannot handle your disease easily on one of the extremely reduced carb plans like Atkins or even (as Ruth will attest), Phase I of South Beach. I believe both ADA and CDA will come in around the 50% number you mentioned from WEBMD.
Pleasde don't get carried away (and confused) until you have your appointment with the DEC . . . promise now . . . okay????

Vermont Chick, you may be getting confused. Information overload? Perhaps it was 40% of calories from carbs rather than 40 grams of carbs? I use Fitday to track my food and my percentages are usually around 30% fat calories, 40% carb calories and 30% protein calories. Please do add whole grain carbs to your diet.

Good Morning, Sweetie-Pies -- :grouphug:
After thinking that Friday was going to be the 22nd  for awhile yesterday, imagine my delight to wake up this morning and discover it was only the 19th -- sort of like getting two extra days this month. Anyway, now that I've figured out 'what day it is' let me state that I will be setting up a new chat thread tomorrow - Friday, March 20 - which is, officially the first day of SPRING.
I also woke up to the first decent FBGL I've seen in a couple of weeks -- 5.6/101 -- so maybe that helped the fog to clear. Still have the chest congestion and a very sore right ankle, but some things are moving in the right direction. Hope it continues, because I have absolutely no idea what I did differently yesterday so it may be hard to control. I see the doctor on Monday and hope he can shed some light on things for me.
Today is heavily overcast, but milder than it has been so I'll probably do a little shopping and lunch with my buddy LouLou. It is nice to see the snow melting, but not nice to see all the rubbish along the sides of the roads. I didn't think there could be this many Tim Horton's cups in the whole Province.
Have a great Thursday (it is Thursday, isn't it?) . . .
