LA Weight Loss - Losers and Friends - Nov. 24-30 - Thanksgiving edition!

11-24-2008, 11:02 AM
Good morning all!!

I realize we have a lot of Canadians here who don't celebrate Thanksgiving when Americans do, but since a lot of us here will be spend this week traveling, cooking and in general having to deal with turkey day, I thought it would be approrpriate to have the issue front and center in the thread title.

I hope y'all don't mind..

This is a time not only for giving thanks, but for minding what we're ingesting.. Let's give thanks for all the folks around us who are supporting our efforts towards creating a healthier lifestyle for ourselves.. On that same thought, let's not blow it by overdoing it this hoilday..

We're free to live, but that's not a license to go hog wild... Everything with moderation, eh?

Have a great week!!

good morning Dan and ladies :)

I am trying to stay positive this a.m., but motherhood and home management are quite trying today. I have two teen age daughters who do not think they have to get out of bed this a.m., and, I just checked my bank balance, and DH's yearly manager's bonus has not been deposited yet. I am starting to get nervous that maybe it is not coming...........:(. I miss DH like crazy too.

Anyway, I have to run some errands, but I will be back later on with a better attitude, I am sure :)

Have a great day everyone :)

Good Morning All.

Don't lose hope Nichole.

I am slowly losing the fight with the diet. I just don't have the self control that I use to have. It is just so much easier to eat what you have instead of always going to the grocery store to stock up on things you need. Not to mention that it is so expensive. Anybody else having this trouble?

11-24-2008, 12:00 PM
Good morning everyone.

My mini goal is 3 weeks away. Not going to make it but I am still in a much better place than I was 8 months ago. I missed the boat so far by a mere 11.5 lbs. So that's not bad, not bad at all.

I agree with you on the hog wild thing I laid in bed yesterday thinking I should get up and have kitkats and pb cups (here for a pinata). But I beat the demon and didn't have any and today the desire has moved on:)

I remember last month how hard Thanksgiving is but I think ours is a little different? We have only a Monday off? What I did was have one cheat meal , I never went crazy either since being op I am used to smaller portions anyway (though I am thinking even a small portion of mashed and gravy not a great thing). Luckily for me, I don't like pumpkin pie anyway.

Dan, you probably mentioned in the other thread..have you found out what ails you?

Nicole, you just have to get through today. You can do it!

Amy, the expense is getting to me but I am SOOO close and you are even closer. Keep at it, you won't regret it!

Everyone have a great op day.

Oh sure Amy, I think we all do.. The fact that many of us don't have the accountability anymore is a killer sometimes... Two years ago around the holidays, I KNEW I had to be good because I was hitting the COD three times a week..

Now it's all on us, and if Liz is not caring, neither am I ..

That said, I'm maintaining pretty well.. I'm losing and gaining the same 5 lbs, so it's not affecting me too much. I find the trick is to continue not buying the offending foods.. Should have seen my shopping cart this past weekend.. All kinds of veggies and fruits.. It still feels really good to hit the checkout line knowing I'm buying the right kinds of foods.. I did buy a small bag of chips.. "Lite Ruffles".. The kind that are made with Olestra.. I love 'em with some salsa and while the salt content may be higher than we should have, the 0 fat and low calories certainly helps the bottom (pun intended) line.

Yes, it's expensive to eat healthy, but it's also easy to forget to count the cost of eating crappy food.. How much do people spend on quick trips to the drive through line or just eating out in general..? I'm a firm believer that it all balances out and there is NO excuse not to eat as good as we can.

I made a big pot of low fat potato leek soup yesterda, using the LAWL clam chowder recipe (listed in our recipe forum). I simply replaced the clams with leeks and pureed the soup once it was done.. TASTY!!

On edit.. Thanks for asking Tan, but no. Nothing concrete yet.. I have yet to get my blood results back and haven't scheduled my lactose test.. In fact, I really should do that now..

11-24-2008, 12:56 PM
morning everyone. not feeling so well today. i woke up early and had to immediately run to the bathroom to vomit. not sure what the deal is. it's a bit late in the game for morning sickness to come back, but i suppose it could. i think i was just so hungry that i threw up. idk. i've been waking up at 2am and been super hungry, but still haven't given in and eaten anything because i know it'd be hard for me to fall back asleep..since i have such a problem with that anyways.
so yeah..not feeling too great today and Jag is being his usual 3yr old self..that and i have a ton of stuff to do at former DH's house today (i clean for him and he pays me) lots of laundry, dishes, trash to take out, kids rooms to clean, etc. just don't have much energy to do it today.
anyways...i should get a few things done before i don't do anything today.

hope everyone is having a better day than i am!

11-24-2008, 01:01 PM
ps..for those of you that missed it last week, i put an updated pic of my growing tummy in my profile.

11-24-2008, 01:38 PM
Hi everyone! Dan - thanks for the Thanksgiving motivation!

My plan is to only eat the things I REALLY love! I can do without the mashed potatoes and gravy, even the corn, but I absolutely LOVE the dressing, a slice of white meat as soon as the bird is done, and the green bean casserole! Oh, and a yeast roll - I checked the nutritional facts between the white and wheat rolls and they were about equal - so I went with the white. I really don't have a craving for any of the pies or anything sweet - so I think I will do ok- actually I've done pretty well the past few Thanksgivings because I don't really LOVE a lot of the stuff - I usually have to have more than 1 serving of the dressing - that's my only downfall...

11-24-2008, 01:40 PM
Jillian - feed that baby! just kidding - maybe your blood sugar is getting outta whack - ask your doctor about that... I used to get the same feeling when I would diet, I would get so hungry that I felt I was going to vomit and it turns out that my blood sugar was dipping way low...

11-24-2008, 01:45 PM
sorry to post AGAIN - just forgot I had more to say...

Amy - don't give up - remember this is a life change! And as Dan put it, it starts at the grocery store... my whole family is a little irritated at the lack of "regular" snacks in our house, but they are getting used to it - I even catch them munching on health foods from time to time! I made PBJ sandwhiches on lite bread yesterday and the kids were hungry enough to devour them without question as to the type of bread it was on! You can do it :)

11-24-2008, 02:16 PM
Hey guys!

Just wanted to stop in quick to say hello!

Amylou- CONGRATS!!! That's so exciting! How are the wedding plans? I am sure they were put on hold for the bar... completely understandable.

Dixie Amy- I know the feeling. I get overwhelmed sometimes with dieting. It really depresses me that I don't want it as bad as I should. I give in too easilytoo. The only thing that keeps me going and away from the wrong foods is just that... stay away from them. I don't have any snack foods or anthing worth eatting inmy house other than healthy foods. That way when I am hungry at lunch and feeling lazy enough to just grab anything fast, I haveto put an effort in and MAKE something healthy.

I am in VA at my in-laws fr the week. Diet-disaster zone. They do not eat healthy AT ALL. They actually try to "save money" and shop at this store called te Smart Shopper. Hey, saving money is great and all, but the store sells EXPIRED food. And I am talking a couple months/years back.

There are no veggies or fruit int he fridge, only awful, expired food! Luckily, there is a fridge downstairs where we sleep, so I am thinking of making DH take me out to get some pre-cut veggies and fruit. For breakfast I had a pumpkin muffin ( I made them and brought them down) and for lunch an englishmuffin with hamand cheese on it. Believe me, it's the healthiest options! Either that or Cheetos and Tasty-kakes!!! AHH!H!!

Anyway, anyone doing anything cool for Thanksgiving?

11-24-2008, 03:03 PM
Dan, My plan is to try to get in a fair amount of extra exercise this week. Somehow it really helps me stay in control around food. I know I can't keep up doing at least an hour a day for forever, but I can do it for a week. Especially a week where I get a few extra days off. I still plan on trying to make lower fat versions of some of my favorite foods for Thanksgiving. Really we are lucky that it is turkey that we celebrate with, as it is not so fattening. I'd be really in trouble if thanksgiving was all about the lasagna.

Amy, I think everyone has waxing and waning motivation to lose weight and keep it off. You've done great! Really, it has been quite awhile since you hit goal, and you've kept the bulk of the weight gone. Maintenance is not easy. It is not easy to keep all your good habits when there are stressors out there (and I imagine having teenagers and building a log house are big, big stresors for you). So just stop and breathe and appreciate what you've accomplished, think about ways to take better care of yourself. I imagine if you finds way to release the stress for yourself, that you will find it easier to maintain your weight. For me exercise has helped a great deal... I must be on an exercise high right now... LOL.

Amylou, Whooo Hoo! Congrats! I was always pretty sure you were destined to pass the bar! Hope you had a great, great time in Las Vegas (or as my dad calls it Lost Wages).

Hi everyone! I am busy on my end. We went to Twilight on Friday night. It was really good. Not as amazing as the book, of course, but it was a good book-to-movie interpretation. I am taking Thanksgiving and the after off of work. My mom and sisters and I always shop together on the day after Thanksgiving. It is a tradition that I really look forward to.

Mama Nicole
11-24-2008, 04:08 PM
I am busy on my end.
 ..........I am sorry, I just can't help myself sometimes.........

My mom, sis, and I always go shopping on Friday too.........while it is still dark, in the wee hours of the morning. It is so fun. Then we go out to some more, and then lunch. We have never endured until dinner.......but one day we will :)

My girls LOVE LOVE LOVE Twilight. Bethany has read the entire just a few weeks. She is going to go see the movie with my sis later this week.

11-24-2008, 06:04 PM
Liz too Alex to see Twilight this weekend.. Danny and I have no interest in it, so we saw Bolt instead.. Cute movie.. Better than I thought it would be....

And yes, I had popcorn..

I have a tradition at Thanksgiving that has been in place for years.. I make a point of not overdoing it on anything... I have a plate with a little turkey, a bit of potatoes and a roll.. I don't like stuffing so no worries there.. HATE sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce, so that's not an issue either.. I usually overdo the raw veggie tray though, constantly snacking on carrots and celery..

Update on Liz.. Her first week at the new job went great.. She's really enjoying her new position and so things are looking up..

Jillian - I linked her to your profile page so she could see your preggers pic.. She said to say how great you look and wanted me to pass along her best to everyone.. She's sorry she can't be here, but with her new job, she's got to focus on that rather than screw around on the net (like I apperantly like to do!)

11-24-2008, 07:43 PM
Dan, I have to ask, was the popcorn salty? LOL... Best wishes to Liz in her new job.

Jillian you do look like you are in glowing good health. I hope you are feeling better.

NJ Amy, I hope you are surviving the expired junk food at the in-laws.

Now Nicole, being a software engineer all my work is done while sitting on my end... LOL. I did see one treadmill thing once where there was a computer and you could walk and compute at the same time. One guy here really wanted one of those. I would get tired feet myself. Hope you survive your DH being gone. Does he even call home while he is hunting. I always had the hardest time when I couldn't even talk to my DH. Once he went on a business trip to India and I didn't hear from him for 3 weeks. I hated it.

Julie, you sound so organized in your holiday meal planning. I thought about it and decided my problem is not so much the one meal as the leftovers. So this year I'm going to focus on making smaller amounts. I don't need to be eating stuffing with every meal for a week after. Really I think that is where the weight gain really gets you. My DD is coming and bringing one or two friends who are not going home from college this year. Then we are going to go over to my younger sister's place for dessert and see my older sister who is coming down. At least that is the plan, I don't know if my older sister will really make it, as she has been extremely fragile since her daughter died and has not really resumed her life as of yet.... She doesn't want to be home missing her daughter though.

11-24-2008, 08:39 PM
Hay there all!

I made my first Turkey this weekend celebrating thanksgiving with my DS since I won't have him for thanksgiving. It went well and we are all still alive so that's good! HA! Then we went to a Hockey game, it's a mew team in town called the Fargo Force. It was pretty fun! Braden enjoyed it!

As for food. I have been pretty off plan all weekend. Including today. We had a Free food day today at work. UGH! I really need to kick it up a notch!

Amylou! Congrats! I am soo happy for you!

Barb, Nice to see and hear from you! Seems like I haven't in a while.

Hi Katie, Nicole, Dan!

Julie good plan for the holiday! Perfect!

Hi to everyone else! Hope you had a great Monday! I think we will have to get that challenge started on 12/1. Through New years one month!

HI everyone! I am sure you all have read my thread, but Isaiah is here! We are so excited to have 2 kids! And so far (with fingers crossed) it has not been too hard! We have fallen into our own little routine and it is working great! I cant wait to get back OP, and get this weight off! I gained WAY too much. I knew better but I went for it. Right now I am still 40 lbs heavier than when I got pregnant!! But I am determined its coming off!!!

11-24-2008, 09:02 PM
dan--that was so sweet of you to pass that on to liz and her comments were wonderful. i'm glad to hear that her job is going well.

thanks to everyone for all the nice comments on my prego pictures i've been posting. taking pictures while i'm pregnant is a first for me and something that i told myself i would never do, but here i am...doing it. i'm not sure how much longer i'll keep it up, but we'll see. :)

i'm starting to feel a bit better today. i got a nice nap in, so that helped.

11-24-2008, 09:12 PM know you will drop quite a few pounds just from nursing. I always dropped right around 20 lbs in the first two or three weeks postpartum. Just think, if I would have only gained the 30-35 pounds I was supposed to........I wouldn't have ever been this fat.... My susequent pregancies really did a number on me. Oh well. Making milk for your precious little baby is your main concern right now........and I am sure he doesn't mind that his mommy is nice and soft. My now 6 yo DS LOVED my, "squishy belly." I asked him a couple of years ago is I lost my belly, would he sitll love me? His reply, "no way!!!"

Barbara........yeah, DH calls me every night. Most of the time, I am half crazy with my duties, but we try to squeak in a brief conversation. It is really going pretty ok here, but man oh man, I could really use an Alice. I cannot imagine having DH gone for three weeks. That must have sucked sooo bad.

Ok, have to get kids in bed. Where is Joni, and Amylou.......did you survive Vegas????

Hey guys!

Just checking in. With an AWFUL stomach ache. I had fried chicken and 2 biscuits for dinner. Belive me, it was the best I could find here at the in-laws. I am determined to come up with some different options for me to eat so I don't go totally overboard. UGH!

I was thinking getting some yogurts, fruits, veggies, and maybe some RF crackers?? GIVE ME IDEAS, PLEASE! I do have a fridge...

Thank you!

sorry you're having such a rough time at the in-laws.
i'd say fruit, veggies, string cheese, yogurt, maybe some hummus and pitas, i also like to dip my veggies in the hummus, bread and rf peanut butter, low fat cottage cheese, crackers, or popcorn (for the fiber), maybe some pre-cooked chicken, luna bars..maybe grab some ff sf hot chocolate to have at night to fill up your tummy or some herbal tea.

idk, just throwing out some ideas. oh and tons of water! good luck! you'll make it!

Good morning friends :)

How are you all today? I am getting excited cuz my sister is coming tomorrow night. She won't be here until really late, but she is the only one coming for Thanksgiving this year. It will actually be pretty darn nice.

Anyway, DS is not getting ready for school, so I must run. Have a great day everyone :)

11-25-2008, 10:41 AM
Good morning all,

It's snowing in NY.

Nicole, my kids had an hour delay, so they were glad to sleep in.

Amy, sugar free jello is another good snack and would be easy to keep in or out of the fridge.

Hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving. We are going to my Mom's so all the leftovers will stay there. That's a good thing for me, not so good for my kids. They love the leftovers, of course.

11-25-2008, 01:00 PM
hello everyone. i'm feeling much better today. i ate a pb&j sandwich before bed last night and didn't wake up hungry until around 530am..which is ok, because i normally get up at 6am, so i just fell back asleep and ate when i got up then. so i guess this baby is a night-time snacker. ha. j/k. i can totally see how i could get hungry in the middle of the night if we're done eating dinner by 630pm.

anyways..DD gets out of school early today and tomorrow, which throws off DS's routine a bit. oh well. i'm happy to get to spend more time with her. i won't see them for 4 days since i'm going to my parents house for thanksgiving and the kids will be with former dh's family.'s almost nap time for the little boy. hope everyone is having a good day.

11-25-2008, 01:14 PM
great to hear all the updates. I need to get some work done today so I will be shutting off the 'puter. Hope you all are pop! *hugs*

11-25-2008, 01:21 PM
My parents came into town last night - they are from Colorado - I don't know who was more excited - the kids or the dog! My dog just loves my dad – its so weird that he remembers him when he only comes out about twice a year… Anyway, the kids get to spend the whole day with Grandma and Grandpa while I get to work… I hate that! I can’t possibly get any work done this way, but I’m off starting tomorrow so I think I will manage.

Has anyone ever tried Teavana? A girl here at work has one and it is soooo cool! Check it out

11-25-2008, 05:44 PM
Sounds like everyone is getting ready for their holiday in a mere 2 days. Any of you hitting the sale on Friday?Would be nice if our Thanksgiving was in late November like you guys, I have been hearing Christmas tunes in the shops and seeing advertising regarding Christmas since Nov 1st. And my neighbours have had their house decorated for weeks now ...All leading my kids to ask every single day, "How many days until Christmas".

Kim, your son Isaiah is gorgeous! Congrats! And Jillian it will be sooner than you imagine and you'll be holding your own, you look awesome expecting!

I woke up this morning 2 lbs lighter than yesterday. I am shocked since it has been so long since I lost more than a lb unless doing TO and then I only lose 1 lb each time. The only change was I did a light intensity carribean workout at home last night. .usually I work hard in the gym in AM. Maybe that's it? No clue but I'll take it!

Hope everyone has a wonderful POP day:)

Hi everyone else! Not a lot of time to chat today. Hope you all had a great pop day!

11-26-2008, 10:43 AM
Hey everyone,

DH and I both had a stomach virus yesterday. It was horrible. I am just glad that the kids didn't have it and I hope they don't get it. I hope that everyone has a great THANKSGIVING.

11-26-2008, 11:14 AM
Great Tan.. Now hold on to that feeling and stay POP!!

Hope all you who are celebrating have a great Thanksgiving.. Liz's parents are in town, and my mom is doing dinner.. All I need to do is stay away from the potatoes and rolls and I should be fine..

If anyone needs me tomorrow after dinner I'll be curled up in an armchair with turkey in my belly and football on the tv!!

Now, go forth and be one with your POP!!!

good morning eveyone :)

I have been having so much fun looking at ads for this weekend online. It really helps me to organize for all of my shopping. It is so hard to keep track of what I have purchased for each kid. This Santa's list is pretty long with 6 kids in the house.......not to mention extended family. I don't mind though....I love buying presents :)

I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving. I am super excited and cannot wait to start cooking.
P.S. Darn you Katie........I spent quite a few hours looking online at Yorkies yesterday.........

11-26-2008, 02:19 PM
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Congrats Tan! The long plateau is over, and often that is how they break, with a sudden unexpected drop after weeks of waiting for any sign that your efforts are still working. Under 130! Wow...

Nicole, How fun to have so many little ones for Christmas though. They really make the holidays special. I miss the days of great excitement over Christmastime. When your kids are in college all you get is a list of what projects and finals are due until finals week and then nursing them back to health after they come home exhausted and sick after that. LOL... of course as soon as you've admistered enough chicken soup and tea and sympathy, they are out the door to go and visit with their friends. I do enjoy cooking with my grown up girl now though, and I enjoy my time with her so much more than I did the last few years she was in high school.

I didn't manage to exercise at all yesterday... Oh well... I did get to spin class this morning for the 3rd day out of the last 4, so that makes me feel great! The gym is open 7-12 tomorrow, so I'll go and just do something then, and then have the oh so necessary after Thanksgiving workout on Friday and Saturday and then I will have made 6 days out of 7, which is much, much better than I've been doing lately. I enjoyed the biggest loser from last night and it motivated me this morning to keep working out and trying to eat healthy, and you will end up looking and feeling great.

11-26-2008, 02:31 PM
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Fortunately, as a Canadian, I've already gone over this hurdle :o)

11-26-2008, 02:52 PM
Geez, eh.. Isn't it Christmas up there yet?

11-26-2008, 04:00 PM would think if you watched tv and listened to the radio. We don't have snow in town yet though!

11-26-2008, 07:41 PM
Barbara, I think you are correct. Down .5 today! I am so happy as I have been working so hard at this for so long . Nice to see results!

Sige, Calgary has very little snow too! But they started the music and decorating for Christmas November 1st. My neighbors decorated their home weeks ago. My kids are going crazy thinking Christmas is any day now. LOL!

Thanksgiving wasn't too bad for me but Christmas may be another story and my birthday a week later. Oh well.If I fall op for a few cheats and hop right back on everything will work out!

HI everyone!

On the food front not so great. Too many challenges going on. But on the working out front that is going good. Hello All!

Fairly new member here and still getting to know everyone. Hope you all had a great Turky day and were able to stay close to plan (sounds like most of you did pretty well!) I managed to actually lose 1lb this weekend, so I am soooo happy about that.

Hello also to all the canuks around here - I'm Canadian myself orignally (Calgary) but love living here in AZ.

Amy, I know how you feel about the expense at the grocery store, but like the saying goes, "Spend more on healthy food now, and less on medical bills later!"
