Exercise! - Looking for an accountability buddy...

I am trying to keep myself motivated to do my workouts. I know it helps to have someone to check in with, so am hoping someone out there is also looking for a workout buddy.

I'm 33, married, no kids. I like to jump rope, walk, and do weights.

11-22-2008, 02:55 PM
I'd be THRILLED to be your accountability buddy! :cheer2: I was recently looking for the same thing but that was before I found this site! I'm 35, married w/ 4 kids & currently weighing 150 and trying to get to 135. I'm the same way and feel the need to have someone "check up" on me to get this done.

I'm looking at getting a recumbent bike for aerobic workouts and need to get back on the wagon for the strength training. Maybe you could tell me what your doing for that so I can get some ideas.

Pleased ta meetcha! Right now I'm using jumping rope as my primary cardio workout. Love that it gives me some good junk in my trunk, something I never thought I'd have!! Also gives you killer calves. I also walk 20-40 minutes per day, commuting to work. Unfortunately I sit on my bum for 8 1/2 hours at work, so need to do something to fight the dread "spread".

I've fought my way down from my all-time high of about 210 (ack!!), and am now hovering between 168 and 171. I'd like to get down to around 150, but that isn't set in stone. Basically I want to FEEL good. I want to have energy and feel strong and beautiful. Having a completely empty lap when I sit down would also be nice. ;)

I do crunches, some free weights for upper body, and squats and such for lower body. I'm trying to beef up my "flab-fighter muscles", quads and glutes.

I'll be out and about with a friend today, so will get some decent walking in. Tonight I plan to jump for about 30-40 minutes.

11-23-2008, 11:38 AM
That's awesome that you've made so much progress already! :cp: Right now I am just below my all time high of 154 (I'm at 150). :yikes: I've been trying the South Beach diet but I keep 'slipping'. I've managed to lose 4 lbs but it's taken me a while. I'm pretty sure the only way I'm going to lose anything substantial is to get back to working out. I'm going to try to start working out on my husband's stationary bike tomorrow but it's kind of big and I don't know if I can do a full 40 minute workout on it. I'll let you know how it goes.

With the weights, do you work out both upper and lower body on the same days or do you alternate? Since I'm kind of pressed for time, I found I was having better success by doing full body days and having days off in between. The only reason I was forced to stop was because I had injured myself by trying to increase the weight too fast while doing squats. So now I'm going to have to start all over again :(

Did you end up working out last night?

hush hush
11-23-2008, 12:40 PM
I didn't end up getting home until about 9pm last night, so no workout. I did walk about 4 miles yesterday, and danced around my place to The BeeGees and The Cramps last night.

I primarily use weights for upper body. Lower body I do squats, plies, calf raises, and dead lifts with no weight.

I'll be cleaning my grandmother's condo today. There's an old saying: "keep a clean house and you'll never get fat". I'll do some crunches, calf raises and arm work when I get home and call it good.

I don't really do diets. I try to eat better, but prefer to burn calories rather than "deprive" myself. :D

We have a gym in my complex, but I don't use it much right now. I did love the elliptical machine, but jumping rope is more fun and burns more calories, so win-win.

What are you planning to do today?

11-24-2008, 07:00 AM
Yesterday I was planning on working out at night so I spent the day catching up on laundry and cleaning the house. I'm hoping you're right about that old cleaning saying because I guess I ate something that didn't agree with me AT ALL and became sick to my stomach. So instead of working out I ended up spending the rest of the night on the couch. :?: I'm actually not entirely better this morning but I'm hoping some oatmeal for breakfast will help settle things.

Today the plan is to start using my husband's exercise bike. :ebike: I'd like to do 40 minutes at 14 mph. I read that doing so will burn 500 calories, so that's the goal. We'll see how that goes. If it doesn't work out, I may just get myself a jump rope until I can afford my recumbent bike :)

For strength training I think I'm going to start with the 5 lb weights and do 2 sets of 15 for upper body and follow your example for lower body today.:strong:

Do you do aerobics everyday? Or just a few days a week? And how often for the weights?

Good for you for running! :cheer: It looks like you've got a good routine going. Keep it up, you're doing great! Did you get those crunches & arm work done last night?

hush hush
11-25-2008, 11:17 PM
I did do the upper body work Sunday night. I do about 50 crunches, and use 8 lb dumbells for arm work until the muscle is exhausted.

Yesterday was only so-so. I wasn't feeling all that hot, so didn't do much beyond about 40 minutes of walking. I got up early this morning and jump roped for 15 minutes, and also walked 45 mins today. Tonight is date night with hubby, so no workout. Although seeing Daniel Craig as James Bond is a workout for my heart... ;)

So, tomorrow night is jump rope night. I like to jump rope while watching a dvd (Supernatural this week, courtesy of Netflix). I am working towards cardio 4-5 days per week, and strength 2 days per week.

How did your day go?

11-29-2008, 02:49 PM
Okay, so yesterday was not good... Did not work out, and overindulged in pumpkin pie. :^:

So far I did ab work this morning. Did 10 minutes of Zumba videos online, also Kathy Smith's lower body toning video. I'm gonna get some jumpsnapping while I catch up on Supernatural. Today is going to be a good day!!

hush hush
11-30-2008, 12:54 PM
I got my 20 mins of jumpsnapping in yesterday as well. Woke up this morning.. "oh, hello there hamstrings..." :D

Today I'll be cleaning my grandmother's place. This will be a big one, so it will count as my activity today.

12-01-2008, 01:16 PM
Hey! SOOO sorry I haven't been on the last few days! I've been super busy with getting ready for Thanksgiving and then my 21 hour shopping marathon on friday  That left me pretty much exhausted for the weekend clean up!

Good for you for keeping up your routine. [Don't worry about the pie, life happens ;) ] Hope you get a lot done today at your grandmother's.

I don't know how you're able to get so much done in one day. I'm still trying to figure out how I can piece together everything I have to do and still have time to breathe  I have a huge list on my fridge of things I need to do and I don't even know where I can stick exercise. Maybe I can squeeze some in later tonight. I'm hoping :crossed: I just don't like exercising at night :(

Well, not having kids helps. Also, DH is very low maintenance.

Cleaning at my grandmother's is definitely a workout. Moving her furniture (she insists on vacuuming behind all the couches, etc. I ate well, had a small tuna salad when we went out for brunch.

My hammies and glutes are still recovering from Kathy Smith's video. If you can find it (I have it as a bonus on her Yoga Challenge dvd), it is a KILLER lower body workout. I'm taking it easy today. I did walk to and from work (22 mins each way), and did crunches tonight.

Stocked up on healthy snacks yesterday. Fiber One bars, dried apricots and walnuts. Walnuts are excellent for curbing appetite.

Glad you checked in. :spin: How was your Thanksgiving?

12-03-2008, 05:07 PM
My thanksgiving was pretty good. I never over do it on that day. I usually have a ton of salad, some of my MIL escarole soup and a little turkey with some of her mashed potatoes (my worst cheat for the day). But I have to admit that I HAVE been over doing it a bit with all the leftovers. It's just too easy to pick at! I can't wait for it all to be gone...lol

I am proud to say that I did my aerobics for the day. 40 minutes @ 14mph on my recumbent bike. I was able to get it working. It looks pretty funny, but I don't care because at least now I have it working! I will be doing my strength training later tonight. I'll post an update once I have it done!

I got a huge motivator last night. I had been auditioning to sing in a band for the last few weeks and found out last night that I got in. But here's the thing: Our first 'unofficial' show is in 2 weeks and I don't want to look like this on stage! So that definately helped to kick my butt in gear today!!! I told my husband I'd love to find a quickie lypo place that was cheap if I could....lmao!

I know I won't be able to lose much in 2 weeks but the first 'official' show is Jan. 9th and I'm hoping I can lose more by then.

How did the cleaning at your grandmother's go?

***did 2 sets of 12 reps with 5 lb weights tonight. Tomorrow is lower body. Hope to get a regular routine going! Hope you're doing well too!

12-04-2008, 05:22 PM
Hey! Hope you're having a great day!

I was able to get another 40 minute workout on my bike today. So happy. I just hope that I can keep it up because I'm always gung-ho at the start and then end up stopping somewhere along the way.

I also did upper body again today. I didn't feel like I got much of a workout yesterday so I added some reps and feel better about the workout today.

Hope you've been able to keep up your exercising too! Have a great night!!!

12-05-2008, 08:00 PM
Hi again!

Just a quick post tonight. I had to exercise later today because I worked and I TOTALLY hated it. I have so much less energy at night and it was pretty tough to stay at it. It took me a little longer to hit my 500 calories because I was having a hard time staying near 14mph but I did it.

Now I'm going to shower and veg for the rest of the night with my hubby since he just got back from a long business trip.

Hope you're having continued success! I'll check in again tomorrow!

Hey, I'm still here.

I am super excited! I won a Zumba system in a silent auction at work today!! So tomorrow is gonna be serious butt-kicking time! Tonight I did the intro dvd for Zumba, which got me moving for 58 minutes, sweating. Also reminded me that I am NOT coordinated... Tomorrow I plan to do the Kathy Smith lower body dvd plus the Zumba Sculpt & Tone. :D :carrot: :D

I walked and did lower body work on Tuesday & Wednesday as well. Took last night off, letting my hammies and glutes recover.

You must be excited for the audition. I have awful stage fright, so never did much singing outside of a chorus. And I head ya on the need for speed. Can we just hit fast-forward on the fat loss??

12-05-2008, 10:31 PM
Excellent work on your bike btw, and for not overdoing thanksgiving. I was... not so good. But, eh, it's once a year. I GOTS to have me some mashed potatoes and turkey gravy.

12-06-2008, 07:02 PM
Hey! Glad to see your still hanging in there! Unfortunately I have to report that I will not be exercising today. I wasn't planning on taking any days off but there is just no way I will have time to add it in today. I have literally been running around since 6 am and I just have this short break before I'm off again. Ugg!

Hopefully all this running around will count as a little movement for me today. But I will DEFINATELY be on the bike tomorrow!!!

Congrats on the Zumba system! I bought it and was doing it with hubby a LONG TIME AGO. He actually got really good at it and it helped his poor uncoordinated white boy dancing...lmao!

Well, I'm off! I'll check in tomorrow!
Have a great night!

Well, sometimes life does get in the way of our good intentions. ;) Yesterday was a light day for me, took the dogs for a long walk and that was about it, aside from dancing around my living room to some righteous tunes. I did eat healthfully though. In addition to working out more, I'm trying to remember to nourish my body. Don't just cram any old thing into the pie hole. :p

I did some lower body work this morning: squats, plies, floor touches, dead lifts, etc. I'll be visiting my grandmother today (no cleaning), and then tonight will be preparing for DH and I's interview with the Dept of Homeland Security. DH is working towards his green card. I'm not so much nervous as nauseated.

12-07-2008, 02:34 PM
Well, I'm glad to report that taking yesterday off didn't stop the exercise wagon! I did my 40min@14mph today and my upper body routine! Haven't gotten on the scale in a while, probably do it tomorrow morning to see where I'm at.

Today's diet will be suffering a little because we definately need to do some grocery shopping. I'm going to try and eat as healthy as possible with what we have left [lol]

Good job with the lower body work. I figured that riding the bike will do the lower body for me. I just have to work in some ab work that won't kill my back. Still searching for a good exercise for that one.

How was Zumba? Did you get to try it yet?

Good luck with your interview! I'm sure it will all go well for you!

12-07-2008, 10:55 PM
I did the 50 min intro dvd on Friday. It is going to take time for me to learn the moves, so I'll be flailing around for a while. I think I'll try the tone & sculpt on Wednesday. I don't think I'll get a workout in tomorrow, as my grandmother wants me to help her tomorrow after DH and I finish with the interview.

I'm sure everything will be fine, but dealing with the Feds always makes me feel nauseated.

12-08-2008, 06:20 PM
Hey! Hope the interview went well!

I was able to squeeze in a shorter workout today. I didn't get to do the full 40min@14mph, but I was able to do 30 minutes and hit 400 calories instead of my 500. Hope that doesn't make too much of a difference. No upper body for me today. So I'm pretty much done for the day and free to run the kids around everywhere they need to go.

Talk to you tomorrow!
~Flavia :)

12-09-2008, 11:59 AM
Mornin! Just wanted to check in and say I was able to do my full 40 min. workout this morning. I still have to do my upper body today but I'm hoping to fit that in later. I'll update, once I get it done.

Hope you're having a good day!

hush hush
12-10-2008, 01:23 AM
You are kicking my *** this week!! :D

Interview went very well, the last hoop we have to jump through. Other than that, yesterday was not so good. Got an attack of the snackies and did not work out. Walked for an hour today, broken up in three walks.

I ate better today, so taking comfort in that. Tomorrow will be another day, I'm planning on the Zumba Tone & Sculpt.

hush hush
12-10-2008, 09:54 PM
Oy, this week is going to kill me! I did get the Zumba in today, so huzzah for that! :carrot:

However... I just realized my company's client party is tomorrow, directly after work. Sooo, there will be no workout tomorrow... AND, Friday is our office christmas party... so unless a drunken pool tournament qualifies as exercise, I'm afraid I probably won't get another workout in until Saturday. Drat, drat, and double drat!

How's your week going?

12-10-2008, 11:43 PM
Actually running into some bumps in the road. Yesterday I didn't get to do my upper body workout afterall. But no big deal, I figured I'd just do it today. Yeah right, that didn't work out either. :(

I did do my bike this morning but only for 25 minutes/300 calories. :halfempty: I ran out of time because I had to watch a kid today and I just couldn't time it right so I'd be out of the shower before he got dropped off. Planned on getting back to finish the workout after he left.

But then my kids had an hour delay for school because of a fire in town :hot: and the kid left before I had to drop off my kids. So I took the opportunity to finish my christmas shopping :present: by heading out first thing this morning. Well, it took me all day but at least I'm now finished. I didn't get home until 5:30pm. Then I made dinner and by the time all was said and done it was 8pm & I was exhausted :faint: I wanted to wrap gifts tonight but ended up just vegging on the couch.

:goodscale: My good news for the day? I weighed myself and am at 145! :cheer: WooHoo! That was the weight I had been at the longest after having my first 3 kids. It also means I've lost 9 lbs in the last 5 weeks! DEFINATE motivation to keep going. I'm almost afraid to eat now  just because I don't want to gain again. I'm going to have to update me signature now :D

:cheer: Good for you for doing the Zumba! And I wouldn't worry about the 'day off' from diet/exercise. I think we're all entitled every once in a while as long as we stay aware and try to counter-act it after. As for the Christmas parties, (I hope you have a good time. I have one coming up Saturday night), I'd say just try to eat as health as possible and try to get in as much dancing as you can! :D We'll have the New Year for making up for that ;)

12-12-2008, 10:15 PM
Okay, so the past couple of days have gone down hill for me. :( Hubby came home early from his business trip because he was really sick. Turns out he has broncitis from all his travel, lack of sleep and long work hours. So yesterday I had to care for him and exercise was the first thing that ended up cut from my to-do list. But I ate pretty good so I at least had that going for me.

As for today, I had a child to babysit and still care for the sick hubby. Also, I was extra tired because my rehersal ran late last night, I had to get up early to clean my house before the kid arrived this morning AND I got little sleep because I slept on my couch so I wouln't get sick. So again, no exercise.

But to make matters worse, I slipped and had some bad (but yummy cookies/snacks). The kid I watch gave me a small container of italian cookies as a gift. So of course after looking at it all day, I gave in to my exhaustion and had 2 cookies and a brownie. I wouldn't feel so bad about it if I had exercised.

And tomorrow, I will be running the kids around all morning and then my little sister (cousin, actually) is coming shopping with me because my band is have a photo shoot on sunday for new advertising pics and I have NOTHING to wear. And then I have a christmas party to go to. I hope that getting a lot of dancing in tomorrow may help counter act a little of the slipping I've had over the past few days.

Hope you're doing better than me right now! Also, hope you're having fun at your christmas parties! Probably won't be able to check in until sunday. Have a good weekend!

12-16-2008, 07:54 AM
Okay, so it's Tuesday morning. Here's the recap of the last several days...

Saturday - did all my running around, ate okay although my portion sizes at the party probaby weren't great. But I did spend almost the entire night on the dance floor. :dancer: So I'm hoping that helped.

Sunday - did get in a short 20 minute workout. Ate right. :yay:

Monday - had to watch 2 kids all day and had rehersal at night. No exercise :(

Today - only have 1 kid to watch and he isn't getting here until around 9 so I'm checking in, going to have my breakfast and workout before he gets here. :D I'll try to update later with what I was able to get done. If I don't update later, I'll do it tomorrow because tonight is my mom's birthday. :hb:

[[UPDATE...okay, good news/bad news. I was able to do my 40 mins/500 calories today. BUT...I had 2.5 pieces of extra cheese pizza and 3 bites of whipped cream topped birthday cake at my mom's. Now as I'm writing this, I feel really guilty about the cake but not so much for the pizza. I did eat light today and was kind of expecting the bad dinner but I couldn't resist the cake. I'm hoping the exercise this morning will more than make up for the cheat today. ]]

Hope things are going well for you! You'll have to let me know how your parties went and if you've been able to keep exercising! :D

12-17-2008, 09:27 AM
Morning! Happy to report I was able to do my 40 min/500 cals today! I pretty proud because I didn't sleep well last night & was up with the baby for a little bit. This morning the cold I've been fighting for the last few weeks seemed especially strong and I didn't know if I would be up for exercise. But thank god for Sudafed, a good breakfast and a little determination (very little...lol).

I think A BIG motivating factor is that I made myself a little calendar with a countdown to my first show. Knowing that it's coming soon and every day counts, helped to give me that push I needed today.

Hope things are going good for you!

12-18-2008, 11:45 AM
Happy Thursday! :jig: Don't know what's gotten into me today, :dunno: if I'm finally starting to get over the cold I've been fighting or actually got a good night's sleep, or both but I woke up today with a little more energy than usual. :spin:

:ebike: I was able to hit my 500 cals today at 35 minutes but I continued to 40 min anyway for the extra calorie burn :D Might even start back up with upper body today since I'm feeling so good! :lifter:

Hope you still plan on checking in. :crossed: This has been very good for me! :kickbutt: Knowing that I have to own up to what I've been up to has helped to keep the cheating and laziness to a minimum. Hope to 'talk' to ya soon! :thanks:

12-22-2008, 11:26 AM
I'm sorry to see that you haven't logged in since my last post. :?: I'm worried that you have given up. My hope is that you're just busy with Christmas and plan on coming back soon! :crossed:

As for me, Friday we had a huge snow storm and I had kids that ended up staying later than planned. So once everyone left, it was late and I was too tired so I never got to exercise :(

Saturday - I had the worst migraine headache and could barely lift my head. So again, no exercise :yikes:

Sunday - Happy to say that fear of stopping pushed me towards the bike and I was able to get my 40 min/500 cal done! :yay:

Today - Got on the bike again today! :woohoo: Was pressed for time so I picked up the pace and did the 500 cals in 35 min.

I'm hoping I can keep going through Jan 9th! I'd REALLY REALLY like to be below 140 lbs. by then. I know it's possible but with the holidays in the way, I'm nervous.

Hope I'll be hearing from you soon!!!
