Hi. I noticed that some of you are using the Xenedrine and that it made you jumpy or moody. Are you taking the version that has ephedra or the new formulation that does not. I am considering using the new EFX version because I would never use ephedra, too risky. Wonder if any of you have tried it. One lady at GNC told me that she noticed a difference in her clothing. And she is not on a diet.Thnx for your input.:^:

I don't have any comments about the product, I've not checked into it. I just wanted to stick my nose in about that last thing you said, that the sales woman at GNC told her she'd noticed a difference even without dieting.
Keep in mind that the sales force at shops like that are just doing their job... making sales. They will always tell you a product works. They're well trained, and hyped up. They get all their information from "above", which ultimately comes from the manufacturers who's goal is to sell massive quantities of products. They can't do that unless they can convince you they work.
For that reason, I never trust sales people in general, lol! Get information from them, but come home and look for unbiased opinions and first hand experience. Like you are doing now. I hope someone here is familiar with the product and able to help.
Btw, I did a search on it but the only things I could find were sites that sell it, and an odd message on a body building forum which was sponsored by supplement manufacturers. That's not a good sign.
Unfortunately, since this item is a "supplement", it is not regulated, so they don't have to be approved by the FDA and their claims don't have to be proven unless they make medical claims such as curing a disease. Dietary supplement manufacturers are not required to demonstrate that their product is safe or effective. Dietary supplements are assumed to be safe unless the FDA can prove they are not. However, the FDA doesn't generally test them, so it's a catch-22.

well, i just wanted to say that i am using the product and i found that it works great! if someone is looking for something to curb their appetite while starting a diet, or just to help to keep the cravings down, i think that the new xenadrine would be a great choice. i started on monday, and hopefully this doesn't contradict what i just said, but i got a little jittery and i didn't feel all that great towards the middle of the day. but after using it again yesterday, that feeling wasn't there so i figured that it was because my body wasn't used to not eating so much, since it cut my appetite so much. i'm in college, and i usually get REALLY hungry in EVERY class, but with this pill, i am honestly never hungry. i can tell that i need to eat, but any little bit fills me up and i don't crave so much junk food. and i don't feel jittery at all. on the bottle it says to take only one pill for the first week if you are under 150 pounds, so that's what i've been taking. i'll take two tomorrow to see if it makes a difference, and if it makes me feel too funny, the one pill does the job anyway.
it feels so great to be in comoplete control of my appetite now. i don't spend every minute of the day thinking about what i'm going to eat next.
I have a friend who lost 40 pounds on the regular xenadrine (she said she had to force herself to get used to the jitters). I saw her in school last year, then i saw her again a month ago and she looks like a completely different person. She looks great, and her body looks like she actually wroked out! and she told me that she exercised once in a while. i couldn't believe it. After seeing her, i wanted to try xenadrine so badly, but i knew how horribly my body reacts to ephedrine, so i didn't try it. So you can imagine how happy i was when i found out about this product. however, i will start my tae-bo tapes with it because i know that the exercise will help the weight come off even faster, hopefully.
Well, i'll shut up now, to make a long story short, i'm no saleswoman...and this product works wonders for me. and i usually eat the food off of my boyfriend's plate.
And the great thing about purchasing form GNC is that if you keep your receipt, you can return the product if it doesn't work for you. So i really think you should try it. i don't see why you shouldn't since it doesn't have the harmful ephedra.

yes, i am still on the product and it works great! i just have to pull myself into exercising ecery morning because i know that will speed up the process. i don't feel jittery at all. i do, however feel a little shaky if i take the pill and don't eat at all...which would happen to me without the pill. it's just that the pill cuts my appetite so much that i don't even realixe that i really should eat. then as soon as i put something in my mouth, it goes away. and any little thing fills me up too. so starting tomorrow, when i take the pill and feel like i need to eat, i'm going to eat a piece of fruit since it will fill me up. i'll do that for breakfast nad lunch, then i'll have regular food for dinner. i'm sure i should lose the weight pretty fast with that, and at least i'll be eating healthy food, you know?
Well, i think the roduct is great. so let me know if you try it!

Hi I have been thinking about buying xedrine for awhile , my friend just bought it but , I am so unsure about it , I used to many years ago take Phen -Fhen before anyone knew how bad it was for you , well it did some damage and now I have to be careful I even had to cut out caffiene , I really need to lose some weight and since the whole phen-fhen thing well I have gained a cool 50lbs which also happens to be very unhealthy for me and my heart , I have tryed taking diet stuff but everything now a days has that ephridine in it and that usually gets my heart beat going anyways I am going to try it and hope it will work ! anyone one elese take phen fhen in the pass and are now paying the price let me know !! firstname.lastname@example.org :?:

I will work my way into the EFX. I have a friend who has used the regular and lost about 60lbs so far. I am using a bottle she gave me and will when finished go to the EFX, I wonder how this is working out for any of you. I know many have posted that you are just starting to use but I was wondering if any of you have had success?

:dizzy: I have tried the Xenadrine with ephedra and it worked for me however i have noticed that it makes me a little on edge and gives me headaches at times. within 3 months of eating right taking xenadrine and some but not much exercise i have gone from a size 18 to a size 10/12. i seemed to lose more inches than pounds. i did quit taking it and was maintaining my weight until i tried to quit smoking and gained 5lbs back. so back to dieting again.

Just a word of warning:
Any product touting itself as a 'miracle' product most definitely is NOT.
Think about it...if there truly was such a product...one that would cause effortless fat loss...wouldn't it be on the front page of the NY Times? The cover of People? I mean, obesity is the #1 health care epidemic in America today...think about it...
And did the website tell you just exactly WHAT this 'miracle herb' is? What the product contains? My guess is it's either an ephedra/caffeine/asprin stack or one of the many other 'weight-loss miracle' products already sold in drugstores around the country.

Dec. 11, 2000 -- The herb ephedra can cause some serious side effects, from high blood pressure to strokes and seizures. But the clerk at the health food store didn't mention any of that when I asked her for a product that would help me lose 10 pounds.
Instead, she suggested some products that might do the trick: meal replacement shakes, pyruvate (a substance said to increase metabolism) and L-carnitine (a so-called fat burner).
On I went to four other health food stores, asking the same question. The list of recommendations got longer, with clerks suggesting other types of "fat burners," chitosan (promoted as a fat absorber), ciwuja (a relative of ginseng promoted as a fat metabolism booster), and green tea extract.
Each clerk sounded convinced that the product he or she was recommending was the best for weight loss. Never mind that I didn't see a single piece of literature confirming that the products worked (even though I often asked). And although some of the suggested products contained ephedra (sometimes called ma huang), no one mentioned what I already knew: that two San Francisco researchers recently found an alarming number of ill effects, including high blood pressure and stroke, associated with that supplement.
In wake of Congress deregulating the health food industry with the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the business of handing out unproven remedies has mushroomed to a $15 billion industry. Doctors and herbalists alike are becoming concerned that many people are spending their money for substances that will not help and may even hurt them.
So when it comes to getting advice at the health food store, the quality of the advice being dispensed is anyone's guess, and the environment is definitely caveat emptor, or "let the buyer beware." That point was brought home not only by my personal experiences, but also by at least three recent medical journal reports:
The San Francisco doctors reviewed 140 reports of ill effects related to the use of dietary supplements containing ephedra and concluded that almost two-thirds either were definitely, probably, or possibly associated with use of the supplement. High blood pressure was the single most frequent adverse effect, followed by heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, stroke, and seizures. Due to potential public health implications, the findings were released early by The New England Journal of Medicine, which plans to publish the final version of the report Dec. 21.
A University of Hawaii researcher who posed as the daughter of a breast cancer patient and visited 40 health food stores in Hawaii asking for advice was frequently told her mother should take shark cartilage, an unproven remedy that has been associated with liver toxicity, nausea, fever, and other ill effects in cancer patients. Her study appears in the August 2000 issue of the Archives of Family Medicine.
Doctors from Belgium and Germany discovered that the Chinese herb Aristolochia fangchi may cause not only kidney failure but urinary tract cancer, according to a report published June 8 in The New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers followed 105 patients treated with the herb at a Belgium weight loss clinic. End-stage renal (or kidney) failure developed in 43. And nearly half of the 39 who agreed to preventive removal of the kidneys were found to have urinary tract cancer. The FDA issued an import alert on the herb to ban its entry into the country.
This information doesn't seem to have filtered down to those who sell supplements. When I recently called the same five health food stores I had visited, asking if they carried aristolochia, four said no and one clerk asked me to call back when her boss returned. No one mentioned the import ban, and one suggested he might be able to order the herb for me.
So what should health food store clerks tell you and what can you do to protect yourself while supplement-shopping? How can consumers decide if they are being given potentially dangerous medical advice?
The fine line
The fine line between selling and giving medical advice is of concern to the health food industry, too, insiders say. Those who sell supplements should know their product, says Gayle Engels, a spokeswoman for the American Botanical Council, an education and research organization in Austin, Texas. But they should not dispense any medical advice. "All the information we put out says, 'This information is not intended to replace the information provided by a health care professional.'"
To be on the safe side, "retailers should not go much beyond label statements," says Diane McEnroe, an attorney for Sidley & Austin, the general counsel for the National Nutritional Foods Association, an industry group based in Newport Beach, Calif., representing health food stores and manufacturers and suppliers. The best response to someone like me who asks for help in losing weight, McEnroe says, is to tell the customer there are a variety of products that help with weight loss and that they work different ways: some affect metabolism, others help with the absorption of fat, for instance.
A clerk would cross the line, McEnroe adds, if he or she talked about obesity, a disease, or miracle solutions designed to be taken at night so you lose weight as you sleep. Under DSHEA, claims about how a dietary supplement may help prevent or treat a particular disease condition are not permitted. A consumer interested in weight loss supplements should also expect to hear about the importance of a good diet and exercise program, McEnroe says.
Health food stores can also distribute promotional literature from the manufacturer if the claims are limited to what's known as structure and function claims (this supplement helps preserve joint maintenance) and not disease claims (it can't cure arthritis). Consumers should also expect to see more "third party literature" -- reports about supplements authored by independent experts that don't mention supplements by brand name, which are also permitted under DSHEA.
There's no standardized training for health food store employees, but large chains insist they invest heavily in employee training. "We have invested millions of dollars in a state-of-the-art interactive training programs to ensure that employees are educated on GNC brand products and their benefits," says Roberta Gaffga, a company spokeswoman.

When I visited the five health food stores -- four chains, one mom-and-pop -- no one promised me miracle weight loss and no one talked about obesity. One clerk, at a GNC near Los Angeles, quizzed me before suggesting anything. She asked how old I was, whether I had high blood pressure or heart disease, whether I worked out, and how nutritious my diet is.
Her questioning, however, was the exception. No other clerk asked a thing about my health habits or medical history.
Consumer, educate yourself
In the current deregulated climate, consumers should educate themselves before even setting foot in a health food store, suggests Varro Tyler, PhD, professor emeritus of pharmacognosy at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and an herbal expert. Most health food employees, he says, are business people. "And many [stores} hire young people, high school students, as clerks, and probably they repeat what they heard the boss tell them" about products.
And what does Tyler think of the recommendations I got? Meal replacements will help if you don't also eat a meal, he says, but pyruvate, L-carnitine, chitosan, and ciwuja are all unproven for weight loss. Green tea extract, if it includes caffeine, will help burn more calories, he says, but the weight loss effect is negligible. Ephedra with caffeine formulas work best for weight loss, he adds, but many people's health histories make those products risky to take.
Tyler proposes that the industry set up some sort of standardized educational program. But, he adds, "I don't think it will ever happen."
Meanwhile, consumers should read up on supplements before going to the store, Tyler says. Among the bibles in the field: Tyler's Honest Herbal, by Tyler and Steven Foster, now in its fourth edition; and Herbal Medicine: Expanded Commission E Monographs, edited by Mark Blumenthal, founder of the American Botanical Council.
"Get information from someone who is not selling the product," Tyler urges. "Trust authors who do not have an herb company."
It can't hurt, as well, to keep an ear out for medical journal reports publicized in the press, such as the recent ephedra supplement study.

My mantra about drugs and supplements is informed choice. I'm not going to lecture you about what is natural and what isn't, but I am going to lecture you about looking before you leap. The first thing to remember is that the supplement industry is built on hype and lies. Most legal supplements DO NOT WORK. Someone once told me that a Russian strength scientist, discussing American use of supplementation, said that Americans had the most expensive piss in the world. Of course, hope springs eternal, but most legal supplements are, sorry to say, useless.
Chromium. Touted as a majik fat loss pill. Helpful for some folks with blood sugar issues, but mostly useless otherwise. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by Lukaski et al concluded that "routine chromium supplementation has no beneficial effects on body- composition change or strength gain…" (63(6):954-65, June 1996) A similar study by Hallmark et al (Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise 1996; 28: 139-144) concluded precisely the same thing. So no changes in fat loss or muscle gain were noted as a result of chromium intake. For normal people, chromium has no real utility. It's been suggested that long-term chromium supplementation in women might actually exacerbate or cause anemia.
Colostrum. This is the stuff that nursing women secrete for a couple of days before their real milk comes in. Leaving aside how gross it is that someone is packaging this stuff (though luckily they use bovine sources, or there'd be a lot of skinny, pissed-off infants out there), this is only useful for newborn babies.
Exercise in a Bottle. Get real. Would you buy Lasting Happiness in a Bottle? Personal Fulfillment in a Bottle? Motherhood in a Bottle? Education in a Bottle? On this planet, exercise doesn't come in a bottle; deal with it. Besides, if you really don't want to exercise, what are you doing reading this page? Ha ha ha!! I got you there.
Fat Trapper. Sure, it traps the fat, and where do you think all that clumped fat goes if you don't digest it? Buy yourself some adult diapers with every bottle of Fat Trapper, and stock up on fat-soluble vitamins to replace what gets leached out of your body. Unless you think anal leakage is sexy, don't bother. Same with Olestra. Remember, we digest our food for a reason! Throw Fat Trapper and Olestra into the toilet (for a realistic effect, shoot it out of a shotgun from across the room to simulate the explosive colonic action you'd experience from eating it), and eliminate the middle man. Here's a website on Olestra, complete with a meticulous "fecal parameters" study (conclusion: blammo!). By the way, Fat Trapper and Exercise in a Bottle manufacturers are now in deep, uh, excrement for their ridiculous claims and are being forced to pay $10 million to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.
GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate). A great sleep aid, a useless bodybuiding aid. The dose response curve is very steep with this stuff, which means that a mistake of a couple of grams (that's grams, not ounces) in dosage can mean the difference between a buzz and death. If you choose to use GHB, be smart about it. Don't combine it with any other downers, especially alcohol. Begin by checking out erowid.org.
HMB. Possibly one of the crappiest of the crap, due to its hype by EAS. Used in livestock to increase intramuscular fat marbling. For some reason some supplement manufacturer figured it would make humans huge and muscley. By this logic, if humans ate dog food, we'd have nice shiny fur coats and be able to catch frisbees with our teeth.
MCTs. Medium-chain triglycerides, more easily digested than long chain fatty acids, and said to improve energy and reduce body fat. Some thermic effects have been seen in rats, but no body composition changes in humans. Aside from the danger to people with liver disease and diabetes, MCTs are also said to give you diarrhea.
Prepackaged multiproducts, like EAS's Betagen or Twinlabs Ripped Fuel. You're much better off buying individual components, which are likely cheaper, and you can control the substances and quantities. Be very wary of all-in-one supplements. Often they have filler, incorrect quantities, stuff you don't need, and stuff you shouldn't be taking.
Triax, manufactured by Syntrax and containing the ingredient tiratricol, aka triiodothyroacetic acid (TRIAC). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reported that this product may cause serious health consequences including heart attacks and strokes. Some subjects were found to have abnormal thyroid function test results while using Triax. These individuals had sought medical attention because of symptoms such as severe diarrhea, fatigue, lethargy or profound weight loss. Also manufactured by Syntrax is the product LipoKinetics, a weight loss product which is also under FDA review for causing serious liver damage. From the FDA website: "LipoKinetix has been promoted for weight loss by 'mimicking exercise' and supporting 'an increased metabolic rate'. The product contains norephedrine (also known as phenylpropanolamine or PPA), caffeine, yohimbine, diiodothyronine, and sodium usniate." I think the FDA overreacts sometimes, but this product is crap.
Tyrosine. An amino acid used in neurotransmitter production, and supposed to rev you up before you work out. The human body synthesizes tyrosine on its own, and there is no evidence that this stuff really works as a workout booster. Some folks do like it and there is some evidence that it should work, but it seems to require large doses. You'll get better results from a preworkout cup of coffee.
Weight Gainers. Most women don't get into this, but skinny teenage boys suck this stuff up like crazy, desperately hoping not to get their faces pushed into the lockers by Biff the Football Jock again. Unfortunately, these are mostly just low-grade sugar and flavouring. Sure, you'll gain weight from them, but then you won't be the class skinny kid, you'll be the class fat kid. Your number one weight gainer should be real food, and lots of it.
Vanadyl sulfate, aka vanadium. Vanadium is a trace metal which has not yet been proven to be used by the body. It seems to perform a function similar to insulin, which is to enable the body to use sugar for energy, but in humans its efficacy and mechanism has not been definitively proven. Most research has been done on diabetic rats, and has shown that dosages high enough to be effective had the untidy side effect of causing the little critters to be metabolically challenged. Which is known in laywoman's terms as dead. Moreover, it was concluded that in nondiabetic rats, vanadyl had no effect at al. No similar studies in humans have been conducted, seeing as it would be dreadfully awkward to off a bunch of diabetics with this stuff. A study in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition (Fawcett JP et al, 6(4):382-90, 1996) concluded that "oral vanadyl sulfate was ineffective in changing body composition in weight-training athletes, and any modest performance-enhancing effect requires further investigation." In other words, no fat was lost or muscle added, and a very slight improvement in performance on one exercise was more likely to be due to factors other than supplementation. The thing you hear most about this supplement is that it gives you a great "pump", which is that feeling of fullness in your muscles after you work out. Sorry, but in serious training we do not deal in "pumps". Stand on your head for 30 seconds. Your head now has a great "pump". Are you smarter? Good, then you'll be smart enough not to buy this stuff.

I am also using Xenedrine, but not the EFX. However, I think that I will be switching soon. The regular Xenedrine has worked well for me so far; I've lost about 20 lbs and gone through 2 bottles, but that's also with diet and exericise. However, it has gotten me over that "hump." Also, I'm pretty healthy (except for the extra 30 lbs I'm carrying around), but I know that ephedra can be dangerous. That's the reason I'm going to the EFX....It's supposed to work just as well so why risk the ephedra? But on the regular stuff I haven't had any side affects at all. When I switch over, I'll let ya'll know.

I'm going to purchase the Ephedrine-free version tomorrow. I'm looking to lose 5-10 pounds and think this might help boost my energy level and metabolism. I'm already eating a modified version of SugarBusters and exercise a bit.
Hopefully this'll give me a little more energy to exercise more often! ;)

anyone gotten heartburn with the EFX version? I never took the regular, just started the EFX (on monday) Today is my second day, and although my appetite has been suppressed (at least durning the day, nighttime I'm having problems with now) I have heartburn really bad and have had to take a pepcid.

I started taking EFX about 6 months ago and loved it...but i stopped taking it...for no reason...i loved the way it made me feel and the way it curved my appitite...i have lost nearly 12 lbs on my own in the last 2 weeks and i am going to start taking it again...the only side effect that it had with me is that i skipped a period when i started taking it...that's it...

Can you take these pills the rest of your life? Will you be able to maintain your loss if you don't? Why are you wasting your money instead of learning to eat properly? Time after time the health problems brought on by diet pills are published yet foolish people still keep taking them. There are currently over 3000 suits against Metabolife yet the continue to sell it.

Yep Susan, but I don't think they're selling the Ephedra version of Metabolife anymore.
It's not the FDA cracking down - they can't due to legislation passed in the 90's that was pushed by the supplement manufacturers - but the liability insurance carriers, who increased the premium for companies who manufacture and distribute ephedra products. Xenadrine, Metabolife, EAS, Biotest and now Hydroxycut are all coming out with new formulas that don't have ephedra in them (and I'm sure that's only a partial list). There was an interesting article in the last issue of Glamour magazine about ephedra - you might wanna check it out.

I gave up on the Xenedrine about 3 weeks ago. I was more hungry taking it than not taking it. I did lose 6lbs on the pills, but it's not worth thinking about food or when to eat next. That's what I felt like.

I am still taking it and still loving it! I take 2 in the morning and one in the afternoon...seems to be working great for me...I am losing the weight slowly...I don't know how people say they lose it fast with Xenadrine EFX...I exercise about an hr daily and drink lots of water and eat losts of fruit and chicken...who knows...but i am steady at about 1-2 lbs per week...I do find myself hungry about 2 hrs after I eat a meal, but I eat fruit ...they say you should be eating 5-6 meals a day...I don't eat after 8 (that ones hard)....
Hope all is well, I hope I'm not the only one still taking it ;)

I think it's a bit of both...I have horrible times with depression and the xenadrine helps with those mood swings...and It also helps suppress my appetite...and makes me want to drink more water...I will eventually quit taking the Xenadrine...but I feel like it's really working now...
I have lost another 1.5 lbs this week

I'm looking into this just for the appetite suppresant qualities. Most of the time it's not a problem but the week before my period I am hungry ALL DAY. I've tried more protein, more fiber, more exercise, less exercise, green tea, and just trying to sleep through it but I just STAY hungry that whole week.
Is is the Xenadrine (ephedra free version) likely to help with this? Because NOTHING else does.
I'm not looking to rev up my metabolisim or burn fat or antything other than get a little help on the hunger front for one week a month.

I would suggest drinking lots of water...that usually helps me during that week...
is the eating during that week causing you to gain weight?

I do usually gain during that week (generally canceling out the hard work I've done the rest of the month). Besides that, it's just a pain to be hungry ALL the time. Urgh.

trust me...i know that feeling...since i started working out and my metabolism was readjusted....I am now hungry ALL the time...I am consuming about 1300-1500 calories a day...along with plenty of water...I have lost 17 lbs so far...I did used Xenedrine EFX for several weeks and then took myself off of it to make sure that I could maintain my weight without the pills....and i have succeeded....
If you are only looking to lose 10 lbs...and nothing else you do is working...then i would say give it a try...but follow the directions...I only took 1 pill 2 times a day and It was easy for the weight to come off...
how tall are you? how much do you weigh?

Really, it's more about staving off the hunger that one week of the month. I don't care if I don't lose a pound that week as long as I'm not hungry the WHOLE week, y'know?

i know what you mean....But i have found that the more water i drink, the fuller I stay and I am not really hungry...
Also, keep in mind that thirst can be mistaken for hunger...
try this, Drink a full glass of water, and if you are still "hungry" 30 minutes later, then get something to eat....but make it like fruit, or something like that....

Thanks for the continued advice! I've tried water, fruit, sensible snacks, bigger meals, and just plain pigging out but the hungry thing is just constant. I took one Xnadrine in the morning and one around 2 pm and so far I feel fine and less hungry. I did eat as normal and plan on consuming my normal 1500 calories, just without that gnawing nagging never ending PMS hunger.

I used Metabolite once and after that tried the Xenadrine. The Xenadrine did not work for me and was very expensive as well. I know it has worked for some people, but did not work for me. The Metabolite did however work for me, but I gave it up because of the Ephedra in it. I know there is a new ephedra free form out there now, but wanted to do this on my own, with no weight loss supplements and so far so good. Iowasweet

I recently tried the Ephedrea Free Xenadrine and had a very bad reaction. I ended up breaking out in a cold sweat and jitters and even felt bad enough the next day to go to the doctor. I seriously thought I was having a heart attack. I did take the recommended dosage BUT I am a little sensitive to stimulants. Please, just use caution when taking this product. Even though it's ephedra free doesn't mean you still won't have a reaction -- to my surprise!:o

I just started taking Xenadrine-EFX a few days ago and have started making entries in my journal (http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/journal.php?action=view&journalid=16254) regarding side effects and how I generally feel. I, too, experienced the jitters the first couple of days but that has passed.
I agree with rochemist's comment about hard work...I view the Xenadrine-EFX as a tool that requires effort on my part to take advantage of; I know it's not some magic weight loss concoction. ;) But I've read enough about it to give it a try just for its appetite suppressant capabilities.

I heard too many bad things about the regular Xenadrine, so I decided to stop in at GNC and try the Ephedrine Free kind. The first two days I was on it, I lost 4 1/2 pounds (and that was during my period, when I usually GAIN more weight!)! I admit I did do the four caplets a day, but had to cut down to three when I got a little TOO energetic!:lol:

Description Synephrine is the main "active" compound found in the fruit of a plant called Citrus aurantium. The fruit is also known as zhi shi (in traditional Chinese medicine), and as green orange, sour orange and bitter orange in other parts of the world. Synephrine is chemically very similar to the ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine found in many OTC cold/allergy medications and in a number of weight loss and energy supplements which contain Ma Huang.
Claims Increases metabolic rate
Increases caloric expenditure
Promotes weight loss
Increases energy levels
Theory Because synephrine is a stimulant, similar to caffeine and ephedrine, it is thought to have similar effects in terms of providing an energy boost, suppressing appetite and increasing metabolic rate and caloric expenditure. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), zhi shi is used to help stimulate the Qi (energy force). Although synephrine and several other compounds found in zhi shi are structurally similar to ephedrine and are known to act as stimulants (via adrenergic activity), zhi shi does not appear to have the same negative central nervous effects of ma huang (ephedra). Through its stimulation of specific adrenergic receptors (beta-3, but not beta-1, beta-2 or alpha-1), zhi shi is theorized to stimulate fat metabolism without the negative cardiovascular side effects experienced by some people with Ma Huang (which stimulates all beta-adrenergic receptors).
Scientific Support The effects of synephrine alone or in combination with other ingredients such as kola nut and guarana (both are caffeine sources) or with salicylates such as white willow (a natural form of aspirin) generally fall into the category of acting as a mild stimulant. The extract of citrus aurantium, in addition to synephrine, also contains tyramine and octopamine. Octopamine may be related in some way to appetite control, as it is thought to influence insect behavior by stopping bugs from eating the citrus fruit (so if you’re an insect, this may be the perfect weight loss supplement for you). Importantly, each of these related compounds (synephrine, ephedrine and octopamine) can result in elevated blood pressure
A recent study conducted in dogs suggests that synephrine and octopamine can increase metabolic rate in a specific type of fat tissue known as brown adipose tissue (BAT). This effect would be expected to increase fat loss in humans – except for one small details – adult humans don’t have brown adipose tissue.
As it stands now, citrus aurantium extract exists as one of the most over-hyped ingredients on the weight loss scene. There are some interesting theories on how it might work to increase metabolic rate and promote weight loss, but most are couched in pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo and none are backed by any credible scientific evidence of effectiveness in humans.
Safety Both isolated synephrine and citrus aurantium extract have been shown to raise blood pressure in animal studies. Until more studies are conducted on the safety, pharmacology and efficacy of citrus aurantium as a thermogenic supplement, it should be treated as an ingredient with mild stimulant properties and should be avoided by individuals with cardiovascular concerns such as hypertension.
Value The most likely explanation for weight loss effects attributed to citrus aurantium supplements is the amphetamine-like effects of the alkaloids. Although this effect is likely to be somewhat less dramatic that effects induced by Ma Huang (ephedra alkaloids), users can expect variable effects including reduced appetite and heightened feelings of energy (similar to caffeine) – both of which are likely to result in weight loss.
Dosage Because synephrine is but one small component of the Citrus aurantium fruit, a standardized extract is recommended. A dose of 4-20 mg of synephrine per day is a typical dose found in products providing 200-600 mg of a standardized citrus aurantium extract (3-6% synephrine).

I have been using Xenadrine EFX for about 2-1/2 weeks now and just bought my second bottle. I really like it and I have had no negative side effects from it whatsoever. While I have not seen any rapid weight loss, I have lost a few pounds while taking it. The most amazing thing to me, however, is that I have totally not been sticking to my diet at all for the last few weeks, and I have not gained any weight and have even lost a little. I really think the Xenadrine is really helping in that area. I would definitely recommend it.

It's true that Xenadrine EFX has no ephedrine in it, but Rarback points out that it does have "bitter orange," a citrus fruit that contains synephrine, which is chemically similar to ephedrine. Every day brings news of studies published in medical journals. The average reader might reasonably assume that the journal article was, like those often referred to in news reports, a peer-reviewed study. That means the journal's editors have accepted the article for publication based on rigorous scientific standards. "Ephedrine-free Xenadrine-EFX outperforms leading ephedra-based diet supplements," however, actually refers to an abstract of a presentation made at an American College of Nutrition meeting, which happened to be printed in the journal -- quite different from peer-reviewed publication.
"That certainly is not a title we would publish," said the journal's managing editor, Richard Caldwell, PhD, when asked about the study. Later, in a statement, he wrote, "The abstract has not been peer-reviewed by the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, nor has the study it refers to been in any way scrutinized by the Journal."
"There's no indication that we've done anything illegal or unethical," says Shane Freedman, a lawyer for Cytodyne Technologies.
Rarback takes issue with the before-and-after pictures on the Xenadrine web site, too, which show "after" pictures of people flexing their rippling muscles. "They're absurd," she says. The fine print reads, "Endorsers used Xenadrine EFX in connection with a diet and exercise program."
There's diet and exercise, yet again.
Another ephedrine-free diet pill called Hydroxycut, made by MuscleTech, Inc., contains hydroxycitric acid, derived from the Garcinia cambogia plant. To support its claims, the company cites a study showing that people taking G. cambogia with a diet of 2,000 calories a day and 30 minutes of exercise five days a week lost an average of ten pounds in eight weeks.
More research is needed to clarify the effect of diet and exercise plus G. cambogia. A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association found no difference in weight loss between people taking G. cambogia and those taking a placebo.
Instead of spending your money on supplements, Rarback says, exercise, eat right, and "use that money to buy yourself some new clothes for your new figure."

On a side note, I found the reference to the study in the Journal of Medicine particularly shocking. Knowing this was manipulated this way makes you wonder if you can ever believe anything any supplement manufacturer claims!
Ok, so I'm not shocked, lol, this is an extremely common practice! Another reason never to believe what the supplement makers tell you, but you should look for medical references instead.
Also noteworthy is the reference to the Hydroxycut study. Eat right and exercise 30 minutes a day and you can lose a pound a week. You don't need a supplement for that!

OK, so after taking the Xenedrine EFX for a week, I am OFF OF IT!!! I felt HORRIBLE while taking it! I felt depressed and every little thing made me so irritated! I couldn't sleep, and I just felt terrible inside. So, I stopped taking it. It didn't even help curb my appetite that much. I feel so much better now. Oh, and I found out that 2 of my coworkers had exactly the same experience with the EFX as I did. Of all the posts, here and elsewhere, that I have read, everyone seemed so happy with the Xenedrine EFX. I think it's important that people hear the negative side too.

I've also stopped taking it recently. There were a couple of times where I had shortness of breath and some spasms in my chest, and one night after an angina attack (thank goodness I had nitroglycerin patches in the house!), I stopped the Xenadrine the next day. As a matter of fact, 60 mgs of Prozac makes me just as energetic and cuts my appetite, in addition to its intended purposes, and my secondary insurance covers it ;)

I started taking xendarine efx one week ago. I started out taking 2 pills a day, one in the am and one mid afternoon (this is half the recommended dose for people who weigh more than 150 lbs). Some days I only take the one pill in the morning. I have noticed it supresses my appetite quite a bit. In fact, I've lost 5 lbs this week.
I'm getting my blood pressure checked tomorrow by my doctor and I have been regularly checking my pulse over the week. I haven't noticed any heart palpatations or felt bad. In fact, I've had more energy (but that started with my new multivitamin I started taking a few weeks ago). I'm still a little paranoid and taking it one day at a time and monitoring myself. I'll keep you updated on my continued results.
