Default An apple (or 2) a day in October

From everything that I have read, apples are a good part of any weight loss plan. I think their peak season is October, so that are super fresh (and cheap) now. I know that when I eat an apple mid morning, I usually am less hungry at lunchtime.

I think this challenge can help us to make more of an effort to eat an apple as a snack, and my hope is that we can share recipies and tips for getting more apples into our busy days.

Who wants to play????

10/1, I ate an apple in the car while driving from my Dr. appt.

10/2 aple in the car between ballet and the library

hey tigerchic--I just bought a bunch of different apples--you are right, 'tis the season and there are tons of different varieties available now! I am going to try one a day for awhile also, to help control the hungries!

10/4--1 apple (a "pinova"?)
10/5--3 apples!!! a gala, a fuji, and a mcintosh
10/6--1 caramel/peanut apple (I couldn't resist buying one. The miracle is I put off eating it for two whole days!!!)

Still have about 6 left--will just have to go buy more next weekend to continue all through October!

Yay, someone tp join me!!!

10/6 apple in teh car on teh way between the gym and costco


10/7 apple in teh car on the way to teh gym. Then 3yo saw it, and took the last 1/3 apple. I didn;t have time to pack my lunch before meeting my 8yo at her school lunch. So I had another apple with a cheese stick as my after workout/mini lunch snack

10/8 2 slices that I put on teh table for my dks with peanutbutter dip

Hello!

This sounds like a good idea. I'm a little late but could definitely use the motivation to up my fruit intake. I tend to slack in this area, tho I don't know why. I do like fruit, just eat the other stuff I like better more often I guess. lol

I'll start my day with an apple for breakfast!

OK, just now had a Fuji before my WO with trainer. BTW, just finished reading some interesting facts about apples on the web. Seems like it is the fruit to eat to help with:

1) Improved colon health
2) Better lung function
and get this:
3) Weight Loss. They did a study, those who ate fruit before a meal had more weight loss, and a low-calorie, high fiber apple was the best choice!

There was listed a recipe for a healthy Waldorf Salad also.

Makes 6 servings, 3/4 cup each

ACTIVE TIME: 25 minutes

TOTAL TIME: 25 minutes

EASE OF PREPARATION: Easy

1/4 cup nonfat plain yogurt
3 tablespoons reduced-fat mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon curry powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
Pinch of cayenne pepper, or to taste
1 orange
2 tart-sweet red apples, diced (about 2 cups)
1 cup chopped celery
1/3 cup golden raisins
1/3 cup toasted walnut pieces, coarsely chopped

1. Whisk yogurt, mayonnaise, curry powder, salt and cayenne in a medium bowl. Grate 2 teaspoons zest from the orange and add to the dressing.
2. Using a sharp knife, cut off the peel and white pith from the orange. To make attractive segments, hold the orange over the bowl (to catch the juice) and slice between each segment and its surrounding membranes. Add apples, celery, raisins and walnuts; toss to combine.

NUTRITION INFORMATION: Per serving: 152 calories; 6 g fat (1 g sat, 1 g mono); 2 mg cholesterol; 25 g carbohydrate; 2 g protein; 4 g fiber; 116 mg sodium; 230 mg potassium. Nutrition bonus: Vitamin C (25% daily value), Fiber (16% dv).

Washington State has the best apples! Cherries too but its definitely not cherry season..sigh..I pine for thee cherry! Anyway we have great apples here, grown in eastern washington, and yes the climate is similar to England and Ireland for western washington (eastern is much drier). We went to England and Ireland a few years ago and the minute we got to Ireland with all its green I felt like I was home, never got homesick lol!

I'm up for the challenge I enjoy apples in the fall... it just seems right to eat apples in the fall. I really am enjoying these "honey crisp" apples. Very yummy!.
